Global Sports Podcast Network: Rodney, what were your thoughts on the game? Hmm.
Rodney Gooden: Honestly, looked a bit dicey in that first half, you know. Difficult for us to create anything. You know the score. couple misplaced passes from our midfield too. Zubimendi looking a bit off it. Misplaced passes from Rice, you know, it's a difficult start.
Rodney Gooden: we had zero registered shots in that opening half. And I think it was until the Trossard chance in the 33rd minute was our first attempt looking on goal.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: And then, of course, the rest of it, you know, the score. Lovely little goal from a set-piece to set-piece. Ole, ole. And, of course, the goal scorer himself, none other than our very own number 10, Eberichi Ezeh.
Rodney Gooden: Was it our best performance this season? No, but it was sufficient enough to get us the points with four points clear at the top of the table up there. Would you know the score? The top four races looking like Spurs, Bournemouth and Sunderland.

Rodney Gooden: Again, I've told you guys this title race is mad. This season is crazy and I'm happy that we are at our top position at the head of the table. Long may it continue.

Global Sports Podcast Network: No, honestly, to an extent, I agree with you on that.
Rodney Gooden: Mm-hmm.

Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, of course. No, absolutely. No, you you're spot on there. Absolutely spot on. Craig, your thoughts on the game?
Craig matthews : Boring, but we got the win. That's the most important thing. Last season we lost this game at home. We drew against Palace last season, a crucial game last season 2-2. So getting the win is important. That's three games we've won against teams that have beat us last season.
Craig matthews : Palace, um not beat us, but we lost drop points.
Global Sports Podcast Network: and
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, it dropped points against, yeah.
Craig matthews : Fulham, Newcastle, These teams that we're beating them now are getting good results. Again, not the great on the eye, but sometimes you have to win ugly in football to win trophies.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.

Craig matthews : I'll have to win the 1-0 to the Arsenal-Georg-Graham-style football until we can start scoring more goals.

Global Sports Podcast Network: ah But I'll be honest with you, I do agree with what you guys have said. In terms of the game in general, ah was it wasn't the most pleasing.
Global Sports Podcast Network: There were really, there were nervy points at at some point. You know, first half, wasn't comfortable watching. um You know, even towards the end of the game, it wasn't it wasn't comfortable.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But as you've said there, Craig, you've you've really got to get the, nit you know...
Rodney Gooden: hmm
Global Sports Podcast Network: if it's nitty gritty, if that's how we're going to be playing now, nitty gritty kind of football, where it is going to be one nil, um you know, I won't complain, at the same time, you want a bit of flair. You want a bit of enjoyment out this game.
Craig matthews : Mm-hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And yeah, for me, ah first half hour, I was really on edge. I was panicking a little bit, but, you know ah could maybe be questionable but I could question a few players in particular.
Rodney Gooden: hmm
Global Sports Podcast Network: And one player that I never thought I would have to mention ever is Martin Zubimendi. um don't know about I don't know. For me personally, I feel like had a bit of an off game for me. I mean, JD, what were all what your thoughts on on him?
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.

Rodney Gooden: yeah

Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, he had an average performance. I mean, to be honest with you, even at the end of the game, not many people were speaking about him. So, I mean, at least in a way, kind of papers over the cracks a little bit, doesn't it?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, absolutely. Rodney, what about you? What what were your what your honest thoughts on Zubimendi's performance?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, like I said, a few misplaced passes in that opening half hour as well made it quite difficult for us to build that that momentum, you know, play out from the midfield too. Like, was it his best game in an Arsenal shirt? No. But again, agreed.
Rodney Gooden: I also feel that there's several other players in the team where, yeah, you could see performances not quite there too. Saka looked a bit off it as well that game too.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: So I said, yeah, you know what? All in all, I said, if there's a few key members of the team that all having a bit of an off day, then I said, yeah, look, then nothing's really kind of easy in the eye too. It's just up to us to go and grind up those results and get it together. And agreed, I echo JD's point too.
Rodney Gooden: Zubim Mendy for us has been immense since he's joined. So this was a stark difference, you know, a bit noticeable. Can you blame it on playing in the Champions League fixture earlier that week? You know, a little bit of lack of rest to the fixture list kind of ramping up.
Rodney Gooden: It's a bit demanding.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Might need to start working on rotating players so we can start having fresh legs coming on for most of the games too. But again, was noticeable. Happy didn't cost us the result there. But yeah, wasn't his best.
Rodney Gooden: Hopefully we'll see the best of him in the next game against Brighton.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. We'll see. um Craig, another thing I want to kind of mention to you as well um is both teams are really sloppy. Both teams, in my opinion, i don't know about you guys, and I'm going to ask you guys as well, but do you feel like both teams are really sloppy with with their possession?
Craig matthews : Yeah.
Craig matthews : Yeah, we had a lot of turnovers yesterday in the game, like giving the ball a sloppy pass. Saliba was very sloppy on the ball, not as composed stuff as usual. So, Mendy was very sloppy as well.
Craig matthews : Decker Rice gave the ball away a couple of times. He just didn't look our normal sharp sharpness. After the Eze go, I think we were just defending a lot. After the Eze go, they didn't really go on that second.
Craig matthews : But to be fair, we did have chances. I remember the header from Gabriel that hit the post and came out.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, off the bar, yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Craig matthews : the bar and that was look good that was a good chance. There was another one as well where Gabriel caught him and he got caught and hit the post.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Oh yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, ya yeah, yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Craig matthews : Yeah, yeah. So that one and then Schroeser had a chance in the first half for the squad before Eze scored.
Global Sports Podcast Network: yeah
Craig matthews : So, they did have chances but there was one chance when Gokre played it across and Saka would have had a tap in it quicker.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : I don't remember that one he played the ball across the goal.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Oh yeah, I know what you're talking about, yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : um and i and i mark gate I think it was Mitchell playing out for a corner or throwing as an empty goal.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : So, he did have chances but he didn't take them.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: No, absolutely. guy ah Rodney, JD, I mean, again, your your thoughts?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, agreed. I think there's other chances that we could have used to kind of put that game away. But again, both teams looking a bit sloppy too, even with the giveaway for the set piece where Eze scored two from Jeremy Pino.
Rodney Gooden: You know, again, sloppy for them too.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Did not need to make that tackle. Did not need to make that sloppy challenge. Gives away a set piece. And again, as I said before, you know how dangerous we are from dead ball situations. So across the board, it's been not being clinical enough, you know, sloppy, poor decisions, intercepted passes, poor challenges, poor tackles. And I said, right, All it takes is for one team to be clinical enough to capitalize on that mistake.
Rodney Gooden: And then, of course, you can see out the game. Even for us, we're more defensive minded than, you know, we usually are. I know our defense is a really strong selling point, but we switched to a back five the end of that game, just trying to see it out, too.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: So I said again, is it going to be the free flowing attacking stuff that you really want to see from us?
Craig matthews : Thank you.

Rodney Gooden: No, not entirely. But I'd also argue it's quite difficult for us to play out that way, because I think a lot of teams, they know how to deal with us in the sense that they're going to play a very tight kind of well-coached defensive structure because they know what happens when you open up against Arsenal. you know That's why a wing is always going to get doubled off on a regular basis. So I think usually with this one, yeah, you're going to get grindy, difficult kind of games too.
Rodney Gooden: And it's going to be quite difficult to watch that when you know that that's the methodology that we have to use to win the game. And the opening half hour, you're sloppy as well, not able to really build up any momentum. So again, a bit difficult, but ultimately we made less mistakes than Palace.
Rodney Gooden: And yeah, we saw it out.
Global Sports Podcast Network: That's it. Yeah, no, absolutely. and Again, something that me and Rodney have also really kind of spoken about is when we've played against teams that, you know, have that 3-4 kind of formation, um we always seem to be, ri we always find it quite difficult to break down, break down that kind of formation. JD, where do you think it was difficult for Arsenal to kind of break down the 3-4, you know, the 3-4-2-1 formation or, you know, the three at the back formation?
Rodney Gooden: Nice.
Craig matthews : Thank you.

Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, no, absolutely. I mean, um after the game, i was you know I was just looking through socials and a lot of people were really critical of Pino. Everyone has spoken how highly he's been playing, you know how well he's been playing for Palace, but...
Global Sports Podcast Network: People were so critical of Pino because, again, as Rodney mentioned, you know, to give away a dangerous set piece in the position that he gave it away, you know, you kind of knew that it was not going to be, it wasn't going to be easy pickings for Palace then.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um And again, like you've said also, JD, you know, Glasner, he's really built up this reputation, you know, been at Palace for two years and, you know, he's built up such a reputation now for building um such a great team now. And, you know, i mean, again, you know, the way Palace line up is is brilliant. And I think after, you know, after Thursday night, they really wanted to bounce back well because, you know, after losing to Lanaka 1-0, you know, they really needed to kind of try and use the game as a bit of a platform to get themselves back on track.
Global Sports Podcast Network: You know, they, you know, they had that 20 game unbeaten run and, you know, since then I think they haven't registered a win in like four games, um which is kind of worrying, but,
Rodney Gooden: hmm

Global Sports Podcast Network: And again, you know, we we kind of, you know, again, set peace. It's, you know, it seems to be in our DNA. But does it also worry you guys as well that we're not scoring enough from set play?
Rodney Gooden: yeah

Global Sports Podcast Network: but um to bring it that You had to drop him in at some point. Yeah.

And JD, going back to your ah your point on like tactical analysis, and it might have been either last weekend or this weekend on Match of the Day, where um you know the the pundits actually kind of really praise Arsenal in the sense of, you know, when you know when we attack as a unit, we are you know we really do try our best to try and you know be ah be a bit threatening in front of goal.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But defensively, you know, you're seeing... everyone coming back and doing their jobs, you know, from the likes of Saka, Martinelli, you know you may you know, you think back maybe a couple of years ago, you know you would never think that a player like Saka or Martinelli would come back and help out defensively, would you?
Craig matthews : Hmm.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, yeah.
Craig matthews : Hmm.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.

Global Sports Podcast Network: But no, honestly, i mean, again, you know, it's so good to see Arsenal kind of seeing everyone back behind the ball, everyone doing their defensive duties as well as their attacking duties.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And again, you know, it's it's nice to see. But just quickly, did anyone see a stat lying around? Did anyone see a Premier League table oh gold of goals scored from open play or something?
Rodney Gooden: Oh, I did see that.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Was that Sky?
Global Sports Podcast Network: That was, i believe it was Sky or BBC.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, yeah. I think it was Sky.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Or both.
Rodney Gooden: It was like, goal yeah it was the table if only goals from open play counted. Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: That's it.
Rodney Gooden: And we were fifth.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, I was going to say.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Huh?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Because it's Arsenal.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, you know why.
Global Sports Podcast Network: That's why.
Rodney Gooden: You know why.
Craig matthews : Yes, and...
Global Sports Podcast Network: That's the only reason why.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But again, yeah, you know what? And I was going to say, again, going back to that, why is it whenever Arsenal do well, right, regardless whether it's the nitty gritty wins, why does it always seem to be a thing where Arsenal have to be dominating some sort of Premier League table based on goals or goals scored from open play and whatever in between. Like, come on now.
Rodney Gooden: yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: if it was If it was Liverpool now, I'm sure we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we?
Craig matthews : Nah, wouldn't, wouldn't, nah.
Rodney Gooden: nah yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: You know, if it was any other team, we wouldn't be having this discussion, would we?
Craig matthews : Also the most hated club in England, come on, let's be real. They don't like us, they don't like them so far.
Rodney Gooden: It's true. There's there's a lot of dislike. But also, there's a part of me which wonders, is it just a part of the game that a lot of people have looked down upon? Like, I remember when Nick Jova left Man City to come to us as well. You know, you see all the abuse that the City fans are giving.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, good luck with your corners, Arsenal FC.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, yeah. Best of luck with your set pieces. And it's like, now look, right? They're absolute game winners. We're going back, picking up three points as well. And now they're afraid to kind of kind of deal with those set pieces too. I feel like it was an overlooked part of the game, which then Arsenal's dominance in that made other teams realise, wow,
Rodney Gooden: This is something we need to work on, whether it's defending them or whether it's carrying them out ourselves. And so I feel that, yeah, maybe it's one of those ones where people want to kind of reduce the achievement. This is something which is overlooked.

Rodney Gooden: And now we're absolutely excelling there. And it's kind of changing the league in a way where other teams are getting better at them themselves and defending them too. It might not look pretty, but this is a weapon that we have, especially when like Arsenal, you actually are quite decent from open play. I think That's something i wanted to chat to you guys as well.
Rodney Gooden: I understand that we're not firing on all cylinders right now.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: i do feel that our open play game can improve, but I feel that our open play game is usually stifled by the fact that we've usually got players like Saka being doubled up on.
Craig matthews : Thank you.
Rodney Gooden: We're usually facing low blocks. Usually weapons like set pieces are our only ways of sort of breaking them down. If you can't get them on the transition, then you've got to kind of take advantage of long throws and corners.

Rodney Gooden: And the fact that we're so deadly at those means that, well, It might not look as pretty as when you can beat beat a team on a transition. But when they all sit behind the ball, this is how we can guarantee that we win games. So ah I don't knock it. I look at all the hate. I look at all the abuse. I look at all the little tables.
Rodney Gooden: And I laugh at that because what all of that shows is there's something that really works with this Arsenal squad. And it showcases that we're dangerous. So I'm pleased.
Global Sports Podcast Network: No, absolutely. Do you know what I was saying? As you were there talking, Rodney, I was just thinking to myself, could you imagine Arsenal winning the title? The internet would go into a full-blown meltdown.

Rodney Gooden: Hmm. Hmm.

Global Sports Podcast Network: um Declan Rice, substituted late on, seemed to be suffering with a bit of a leg issue. um Potentially maybe his calf or Achilles. um Arteta did confirm that um he did feel something, so he will be assessed.

That's why we have the depth to help deal with it. It's never the news that you want to see as an Arsenal fan, but I'm nowhere near as scared as I would have been hearing this last season.

Rodney Gooden: Then I feel maybe in the latest stages of the Champions League, you know, if he's back up to peak form, you know, similar to the form we saw him in against the both those Palace games last season.
