Craig matthews : Confident. It's not going to be easy game, but I thought that if we do the right things, then we could win the game.

Craig matthews : We've got to do the right the basics right. Hitting them on the counter-attacks. They're very good at hitting on the counter-attacks, so just to be very careful. Watch out for set pieces as because they've got Metessa's good in the air.

Rodney Gooden: Ooh, a confident after the Atleti game, but honestly, Palace are in form at the moment. They can be a difficult team to do what we need to to get the three points.

Rodney Gooden: and advance and continue our lead at the top of the table. So this is it. Confident going in. But again, I'm going respect to them. I know that they could upset us like they did last season. You remember the 2-2. You remember the Eze Screamer.

Rodney Gooden: So, yeah, so we shall see. But hopefully, fingers crossed, we can go in there and do it. Because, again, as we saw yesterday, lot of the criticisms that we get, you know, set piece FC not able to score from open play.
Rodney Gooden: We're seeing what we're breaking that down. You know, we're turning those rumors on their heads.

Rodney Gooden: So now it looks like we're firing on all cylinders. And I need us to continue that going into the weekend's game.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, no, absolutely. And I think going into this weekend's game, I'm confident But at the same time, I know what Palace will pose. Because again, as Rodney, as you've mentioned with the likes of, you know, you've mentioned the likes of Mateta. And, you know, again, you know, we have Eze playing against his old team.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Then you've got the likes of Saar, Adam Wharton, you know, key players that are going to be threats to Arsenal. Now, again, Arsenal defensively, we've only conceded three goals in the Prem.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And that is a that is a good record to have so far.
JD: Mm-hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Really good record to have so far. And the question I want to put out there to you guys is, how do we continue? How do we stop the likes of Mateta, Saar, you know, stop them kind of players from getting a goal or two?
JD: Pretty easy. You just continue what we're doing now. you know i mean, we close the tight spaces. You see Saliba and Gabriel, they're a solid unit at the back. Timba, I mean, he's been after ACL injury, he's been well performance.
JD: He's been magnificent.

JD: And I'm guessing California is probably going to start in in that game. I don't see Miles Lewis starting that game. But either way, well with it i think the back four, I'm so happy with the back four. It's just, it's unbelievable. said it in a few other podcasts.
JD: I've never been so confident about Arsenal back four, probably since the Invincibles. But if I'm going say it, I'm going to be honest. You know, that's the that's the last time I look at back four and think, yeah.
Craig matthews : Mm-hmm.
JD: you know, they're not going to see... it It kind of reminds me, this is probably before certain people's times, of George Graham's arsehole, you know, just one no up, sit back.

JD: We don't even sit back, we just don't we don't don't make mistakes, we don't leak in goals.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, very difficult to concede.
JD: And...
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, it is what it is.
JD: Yeah, and and I know lot of people say yeah we're set-piece kings and, you know, we don't score open play that often. But we don't really need to. As long we get a goal and we've won the match, I don't really care. As long as we win, i think I think this is probably how we're going to start playing.

JD: we We're not going to play that whole Wengo way where we play pretty football and, you know, we're three new up and we can release them 4-3 or something like that.

JD: We're not pay that so not playing that open span of football, like how Liverpool play and all that. You know, we're playing quite, you know, it's quite, everyone's got a job. You can see, even with jocckers even though he's not been getting much goals, you can see he's got a job to do.

JD: He's up and down field. He's doing all the dirty work. So um'm I'm quite confident so far.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah. you know what? You couldn't have said that any better. And I've been feeling the exact same. When I look at Arsenal's back four, especially...
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: I don't break out in sweat. you know I'm quite confident. and you know Whatever back four we put out, whether that is Myles Lewis-Skelly on the left or whoever, I'm pretty confident, to be fair.
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Pretty confident. And the thing is, we talk so much about depth, but the depth that Arsenal have, especially this season, it's so good to see, isn't it, boys?
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Craig matthews : Thank you.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, yeah.
JD: And the end.
Rodney Gooden: Honestly, we've needed it for years, so it's happy to see that we've got it now in spades, and it means that there's a lot of games in which we otherwise would have lost due to lack of personnel or lack of options, and now we've got the tools to go in every game, and now what we're seeing is our team going ahead and doing just that, so it's lovely to see.
JD: yeah

Global Sports Podcast Network: I mean, what a player.
Rodney Gooden: Hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: I mean, hasn't, realistically, he hasn't really put a foot wrong in any game he's played this season.
Craig matthews : No, it's fair some hard teams as well, like Newcastle, physical teams, they've done a good job.
Global Sports Podcast Network: You know, there you go.
Craig matthews : I'd have to say one the signs of the summer, I'd have to say to Bianchi, but I think it's one of them.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Craig matthews : Very under the radar, I know other players came for more money than him, but he's settled in very well, because thought it would take him a while to settle in, but he's done quite well settling in and doing what he needs to do, just getting on with this game.
JD: Yeah.
Craig matthews : no wasn't No one's talking about Thomas Partey anymore, so that goes to show that
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : He's like a departure replacement.

Craig matthews : He's on his job very quietly trying to have to be on the half of him. Yes, they're watching him. He's top quality, man.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
JD: Just to add to that as well, Craig, I think he's technically just a bit better than Partey.

JD: technical That's what I've seen.

JD: I think he's going forward and poking a range of pass and even defensively as well.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : Yeah.

JD: Obviously Partey's a huge, I'm not dissing him, but I just think he's just bit better.
Craig matthews : Hmm.

JD: Yeah. ah bit a bit bit
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Craig matthews : Mm-hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: No, I agree with you in that sense. I think, you know, that the replacement was perfect.
Rodney Gooden: no
Global Sports Podcast Network: the The party replacement was absolutely perfect.
JD: yeah
Global Sports Podcast Network: And again, with Zubimendi, he just brings such composure and calmness on the ball as always. I mean... Do you reckon Arteta's kind of installed this calmness in players now?
Global Sports Podcast Network: Because maybe when you look back to last season, we were shaky at times, especially towards the back end of the season. And I know we're only, what, this weekend will be like match day nine.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But, you know, are you starting to see a bit more calmness and serenity to Arsenal compared to previous seasons?
Rodney Gooden: Hmm. I think so. I think one thing which I quite like as well is like if you think back to like the Xhaka days as well, we used to have players that would lose their heads, and maybe potentially even get a silly red, get sent off.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: And I think one thing that was really impressive with players like Zuby is you saw yesterday with Athletic game, he got a yellow card early on. And you're thinking if you look back to that Man U Liverpool game as well, Amra made those changes very quickly to make sure that those players weren't at risk.
Rodney Gooden: Arteta kept Zuby on. You're thinking that's a risk, but for the rest of the game, locked in, focused, composure, played that entire game on a yellow, didn't cran didn't make another mistake. you know I think it's going to be having those types of players where You can make one mistake early in the game as well and still have that composure to say, we're going to play it out here, knowing that you're one mistake away from getting sent off and it's not even really a big deal. I think it's that, that kind of confidence, that type of quality, that type of player. And I think that just means that we have a huge safety net at Arsenal, meaning that, right, cool. You don't really have to worry about anything kind of rash. You've got a kind of composure on the ball, but also a composure mentality wise to withstand the pressures.
Rodney Gooden: The pressures of playing in high level games, the pressures of being one mistake away from disadvantaging the team and still being able to bring out your best performance. So I think, yeah, the personnel that we brought in, high, high quality. And we love to see it.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, Craig, again, do you feel like compared to previous seasons, Arteta's really kind of installed this, you know, calmness and serenity with Arsenal's possession?
Craig matthews : I think so. I think the discipline seems to be top class the last season. so many red cards last season. So think this season we hardly got any bookies this season.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Hmm.
Craig matthews : Not a lot compared to the last two seasons. So think players are more calm. I think players are more focused on the making less brush rough challenges think everyone does knows their role and does a job for the team. One player that our position's not recovering, it's less of the panic he was last season.
Craig matthews : So, I think the squad harmony is very good as well. That's one thing we don't talk about. Squad harmony is very good. Everyone's fine, but obviously the players who are not in the squad are coming to the game supporting their teammates.
Rodney Gooden: Thank you.
Craig matthews : I think it's a good atmosphere the club, would have to say, looking in.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, absolutely. I do agree. JD, I want kind of, you know, kind of branch off a little bit from what Craig had said there. And in terms of, you know, again, look at clubs like Liverpool, for example,
Global Sports Podcast Network: You know, they've signed the likes of Eketike. They've signed the likes of, you know, they've signed Isaac and so on. But they've not seemed to gel. But whereas with Arsenal, you know, we've gone and signed Zubamendi, Eze, Jokerez, Hincapié, you know, I could, you know, Norgard, you know, I could continue on.
Global Sports Podcast Network: And again... How good is it to see players that have been signed over the summer and have gelled so quickly in the squad? What do you think that comes down to compared to, say, how Liverpool have gone about themselves in the league so far?
Global Sports Podcast Network: I know it's still very early days, but what are your thoughts on that?
JD: I think with Liverpool, they lost a lot of key players that gave them success over the couple of years. You know, Trent, the guy at Bayern, what's his name? Diaz.
Global Sports Podcast Network: ideas, yeah.
JD: You know, yeah, I mean, with Liverpool... I know last year didn't spend any money on, you know, and they, you know, they spent quite a lot the season, but it's still early, you know, we're in ninth game and think we're only about four points ahead of them, if I'm if i'm correct.
JD: So there's still a lot to play for.
Global Sports Podcast Network: I believe so, yes.
JD: and I don't think they've played awful. I think they've just, I think we're finally seeing Slott's team now. and he's brought a couple of players, and I think he's kind of changed a few things there.
JD: And you can see in certain games, certain players don't really know what's going i think defensively, even from last year, I think they're all over the place. Really and truly, Liverpool shouldn't have.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
JD: The reason why they won the league is because rest of the league was not really up to par.
Global Sports Podcast Network: True.

JD: you know They still had the mistakes in them. And I said it before as well. I think if they sign Gay, I think you have a different Liverpool team there. You know, ah it's still early days for them. I think they're still cooking there. think once you get Salah, you can't unrestivate them. once They've got too much quality to say that, you know, they're out of the we lost no
Rodney Gooden: Hmm.
JD: With Arsenal, we haven't lost any players. You know, we haven't really lost anyone that that's been key to our kind of success that we've had for three seasons.

JD: So it's kind of easy to implement these guys. And and the the first team hasn't really changed, you know. I mean, we've still got the solid back four. And I i look, ah I don't know if you watched the um the CSBS um and with Jamie Carragher and you're talking about

Global Sports Podcast Network: Oh, um I've been seeing clips. I saw a few clips from last night.
JD: Yeah. Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
JD: yeah And he was saying that how Arteta's more like a George Graham. But you have to understand, Arteta was... with He's mainly an Everton man. And who was his manager there? David Moyes. And that man are very defensive.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
JD: yeah And I think Arteta, think he gets... Them old-fashioned managers, you know, your Sam Anadyces, they always start at the back four at first. And with Arteta, he has always, since he's been the day one Arsenal, he has always started at the back.
JD: Even on times when I'm thinking, we've really got two left-backs. Why are we linked with the another left-back? Why are we linked with another right-back? Like, we need a straight-out...

Rodney Gooden: game last season?
JD: You know? You know what I'm saying?
Rodney Gooden: Remember that game last season when we had five on the pitch at once? Five on the pitch at once?

JD: You know?

JD: I think this is Arsenal's core that defensively, we're just we're just solid. And we've been kind of blessed. The players that we've brought in, I think we've brought in the right additions. We're not brought too much.
JD: We haven't spent too much as well.
Rodney Gooden: Mm. Mm.
JD: And we haven't lost it any players. Before, in the other transfer season, we're replacing someone because we've lost one in the key area. Now we've got the same core and we're adding value to it.

JD: I think that's been the difference.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, definitely. Just quickly, when you were talking about obviously playing from the back, are we talking like playing out from the back and stuff like that?
JD: I was saying when you're...
Global Sports Podcast Network: Because if we're going if we're going down that conversation, I would have also probably mentioned maybe Unai Emery. Because again, when we were playing football, when we were playing under Unai Emery, you know, we started playing out from the back, didn't we?
Craig matthews : Mm-hmm.
JD: I meant more as in, sorry, I should elaborate more, building a team. I think Arteta, the way he's built this team, he's always started with, he wants that back four.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
JD: He wants these guys there and he's always made that very clear.
Rodney Gooden: hmm
JD: Before he looked at anywhere going forward, he's made sure that these are my back four, this is what it's going to be. He made that a very clinical part of Arsenal's DNA. you know And i think I think he's that sort of manager.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah.
JD: I don't i know he's part Pep. I mean, you play from the back as well, but you play nice football. But you can see defensively, everyone has a defensive job. That's why people like Ozil couldn't make it in the team before because he just doesn't fit that out.
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: oh
JD: you know, Aubameyang didn't really, at one point, didn't really fit that style as well, you know.
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
JD: Everyone's got defensive job now.
Global Sports Podcast Network: yeah
JD: you can see every Arsenal game, I can see everyone tracking back. I can see everyone doing it in the shifter defensively.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
JD: And I think this is what's getting us over the line.
Rodney Gooden: Mm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, absolutely.
Rodney Gooden: True.
Global Sports Podcast Network: i mean, Rodney, I mean, do you do you have anything to add to that?
Rodney Gooden: No, I just, agree. I think like when we play these games, you can see that we're an incredibly like well-coached side defensively too. So yeah, I absolutely agree. I could at point too, where you can see every man behind the ball as well, from Victor to Saka tracking back to you sort of near Letty game too.

JD: Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: And I think, yeah, that's the kind of style that we have. If you don't concede any goals, all you've got to do score one to go and win that game. So I can understand that foundation of defence first before the offence. It can be frustrating to watch if the offence isn't clicking, but it is a solid attempt to go and win some games as well.
Rodney Gooden: If the other team can't score, it means you have to score less goals to win that game. And it means it's much easier. You know, you don't have those high scoring games. You've got no guards. So if the other team scores three, you've got to score four.

But After everything that's happened, how do you think Palace... What do you make of Palace after everything that's happened with their whole European showcase and their European battle, Craig?
Craig matthews : I think they've done a great job. They've lost Eze, they've lost a couple of... Every season they seem to lose their best player and they seem to find...
Rodney Gooden: Yep.

Craig matthews : They've got a good scouting system in Crystal Palace, have to say. They always seem to find these gems from out nowhere, bring them over to the club and develop them and then they become a top-class player. Eze was like... Craig matthews : It was a young, promising player and then they worked on his game and became an even-point-y player, got a big move. Same with the Leeds, they were going from Reading.

Global Sports Podcast Network: I can't even think off the top of my head. But Conor Gallagher is the one player that stands out to me. But... Craig, um sorry, Rodney, how would you, you know, you look at this Palace team now and you look at how well they've done.
Rodney Gooden: Hmm.
Global Sports Podcast Network: um You know, they were 20 games unbeaten before they lost to Everton. How do you know, how do you try and stop a team that are, you know, that are playing good football? How do you try and break down Palace side that, you know, under Glasner are playing some great football at the minute?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah, I mean, I think youve got to look at what they've been doing well in the league, too. And I said, if you see the way they're playing, they're overloading those wings as well. They were like low crosses across that six yard line into the box to low balls. And I like their tends to kind of crash the box.
Rodney Gooden: So defensively, we'll need to put on a masterclass, too. You know, I think the balls over the top would have been difficult. But I think, yeah, low blocks or low kind of crosses into the box.
Craig matthews : Thank
Rodney Gooden: We've got the defensive solidity to kind of just, yeah, stop that and kind of exercise that out. So I think ultimately it's just going to be making sure defensively we're quite solid and making sure that, yeah, if they're trying to get us on that transition, then we can kind of return and counter in good stead.
Rodney Gooden: So this is the thing. It's going to require a real kind of solid defensive performance from Arsenal because I think, yeah, when Palace get going, you see what they did to Liverpool. You see du done what they've done other teams here.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Rodney Gooden: Their attack is quite solid. So, again, if we were a team who were a bit shaky, if we had a defence feel like Liverpool's right now, be more concerned. But I think their best feature, you know, is evenly matched by one of ours. So. going to be a tight game, and I don't think it's going to be as easy as some of the other ones we've gone.
Rodney Gooden: But I think, yeah, if we can have that kind of creativity to kind of play through the middle of the park too and make sure we still maintain solid and well-coached in defence out of possession, I think we can ultimately take the game to them and hopefully get the win.

Craig matthews : we've got possible quick up possible possible quick um ah moved them they thought was a row and the and beat the low block and they can have a look. He's a low block player, isn't he? He's not a great player to watch, but he's very good at like, Catalin and all that stuff.

Craig matthews : Brett, Brett, Brett, and Adam Wharton's a player like as well. i like him a lot.
Rodney Gooden: Mmm.
Craig matthews : think a very good player. I think he'll definitely get a big move in the future. i don't know when, but if he continues to wait continuing, he'll get a big move. I think he, them two are key from Harness and Delaney as well.

Craig matthews : And they've got, what's the other guy that plays in this role for them? um

Craig matthews : They've got some decent midfielders, so have to beat the low block and try and get past them. If they can over play the ball around them and get through them, then we can beat them. be physicality in that midfield.

I was going to say, actually, Rodney, you know, do you really think it's going to be a battle of the midfields this weekend? hen Because, you know, when you look at Palace's midfield with the likes of Adam Wharton and, you know, Deitcher Kamada, you could, you know, maybe throw in Jefferson Lerma and Will Hughes.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: But then you look at Arsenal's midfield with the likes of Eze and Zuby and Declan Rice.
Rodney Gooden: Yeah.
Global Sports Podcast Network: I mean, that do you really think that's where the game could be won or lost this weekend?
Rodney Gooden: Yeah. I think so. Again, as I said with Palace, they want to overload that midfield. They want to kind of have those wings kind of overloaded too. So they're going to have those attacking like what wing backs, you know, coming into that midfield and trying to kind of playmate from there.

Rodney Gooden: So Stifling that and stopping players like Munoz, you know, is going to be key here as well.

Rodney Gooden: Making sure that he can't be linking up with Pino or can't be running down the touchline and putting a low cross into the box. We need to be stifling those attacks and then hopefully hitting them on a counter. So I agree. I think it's definitely going to be one of those games where I want to see physicality, toughness and directness in that midfield because ultimately those loose balls and those kind of breaks from that midfield are ultimately going to kickstart the attacks by either side.
Rodney Gooden: And we just need to make sure that we're clinical we're more clinical than they are in ours and we're very solid in stopping any counters from them.
Global Sports Podcast Network: Yeah, definitely. I think also with another player that we've not really touched up on, Daniel Munoz. I mean, again, what a player.
Rodney Gooden: Mm. Incredible for them.

Rodney Gooden: But of course, you also saw with some signs against Fulham as well with Califiori. I think that for him, Califiori is more likely to get dragged out of position. But at the same time, defensively this season, he's having a much better showing for us than he did last two.
Rodney Gooden: So I said between the two of them, yeah, who do you trust to cover defensive duties and yeah maintaining against a difficult wing to kind of defend against?
