Impact of Additives on Children's Health

00:00:00
Speaker
So we'll look at a few food additives here now that can potentially cause health problems in children, and we'll start with this quote from a study that states, glucose, salt, emulsifiers, organic solvents, gluten, microbial transglutaminase, and nanoparticles are extensively and increasingly used by the food industry, claim the manufacturers to improve the qualities of food,

Speaker
However, all of the aforementioned additives increase intestinal permeability by breaching the integrity of tight junction paracellular transfer.

Understanding Leaky Gut Syndrome in Children

00:00:34
Speaker
So to simplify a bit, salt, emulsifiers, gluten, and a bunch of other food additives, they can cause leaky gut or increase leaky gut, right?

The Dangers of Processed Foods

00:00:45
Speaker
So there's over 2,500 chemicals that are added to our foods, to processed foods.
00:00:51
Speaker
So this video will simply underscore the importance of avoiding as many of these added chemicals to food as possible, cooking meals from scratch as much as possible, just generally staying away from processed foods basically.

Controversy Over MSG Safety

00:01:04
Speaker
So we'll look at first, we'll look at MSG, so monosodium glutamate.
00:01:08
Speaker
Here's a paper that I cite in my book that states, the safety and toxicity of MSG has become controversial in the last few years because of reports of adverse reactions in people who have eaten foods that contain MSG. Many studies have confirmed the adverse reactions of MSG. MSG has been reported to cause headache, vomiting, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma attacks, in asthmatic patients, and panic attacks.

Speaker
So monosodium glutamate or MSG is a flavor enhancer. It's one of the most commonly used additives to give foods a savory umami type taste. And it's added to soup, sauces, condiments, chips, meat products. A lot of restaurants take away meals would likely have it. So it's very important to stay away from ready-made meals and be careful where you dine out. Why is that? It's because MSG is an excitotoxin and
00:02:03
Speaker
As you know from an earlier video excited toxicity can damage brain cells and nervous system cells right so.

Speaker
When you're working to improve your child's health, this is one of those chemicals that you want to stay away from as much as possible. Now, for a healthy adult, MSG, once in a while, it likely won't be too detrimental, right? But when you're talking about a child that may have underlying health imbalances and you're working to improve those, it's generally good to stay away from chemicals like this.
