Moon Phases & Cultural Significance

00:02:35
Speaker
but also like, you know, obviously to this past week, um, we had lunas on and if you guys celebrated, let us know how you celebrated tag us in your posts and your pictures and everything. Um, and because I want to see, but we're not talking about Instagram today. We're not. What are we talking about? I talk about moon cycles in that post, but it's okay. Yeah. It's just we're going to be talking about it more right now.
00:03:08
Speaker
I'm one of those people, Anthony laughs every time when the moon's out. I'm like, oh, look at the moon. and She's so pretty. It's the same moon as yesterday. No, i like it's not. It's changed a little bit. It's going to be different. Every day it's a little different, OK? So they're turning to us. They're turning away from us, OK? Yeah. So gosh.
00:03:31
Speaker
um So something I wanted to note at the top of this whole like little series that we're doing is just by like suggesting the Farmer's Almanac because it's a great resource for daily moon phases. I grew up with grandparents that like religiously had a farmer's almanac, and they followed it quite a bit for like their gardening and everything like that. So like what I absolutely love about the online version, which they didn't have before, is that if you go on there and look at the moon phases, they have like a moon phase calendar for the whole year. And then it'll tell you the percentage full that the moon is that day that you're looking at the website. It tells you how many like days old the moon is in that cycle.
00:04:14
Speaker
Um, it gives you like lots of highlights and like a ton more like rising times and setting times and like when it hits its highest peak. So if you're someone that just wants like an accurate quick place to check those things, like 10 out of 10, I recommend the farmer's almanac for that. and it's in linked in our show notes too, like the moon phase portion of it. So all you have to do is scroll down in our show notes, click the Farmer's Almanac one, and it'll take you right to that page. Outside of that though, just some background to get us started. The moon phases have been broken down into four primary moon phases, which are the new moon, the first quarter, the full moon, and the last quarter, as well as four secondary phases, which are the waxing crescent,
00:04:57
Speaker
the waxing gibbous, the waning gibbous, and the waning crescent. The primary phases occur at specific moments, like no matter where you are on Earth. And the secondary phases represent a span of time rather than a specific moment. And the full cycle of the moon happens over a 29 and a half day period. And so I'm going to kick things off in our part one moon cycles with talking about the first lunar phase, which is the new moon. This is when you're thinking about the moon phases as a cycle that Tiffany just alluded to, the new moon would be the beginning of that cycle. And this occurs when the sun and the moon have the same ecliptic longitude. And so during this phase, the lunar disk or what we see in the sky is not visible to the naked eye unless it is silhouetted by a solar eclipse. And so that's what makes it a new moon.
00:05:50
Speaker
So the moon is itself positioned between the earth and the sun, which leaves the side of the moon facing the earth in complete shadow. And that's what makes it and a new moon. So essentially, it's the opposite of a full moon. So if you're having trouble like deciphering what the fuck I'm saying because I'm all over the goddamn place, the new moon is opposite of a full moon. So for a long time, the new moon was the term that was used to describe the first waxing crescent of the moon. But traditionally, the new moon is often linked with a time of reflection, contemplation, setting new intentions and goals, manifestation and making positive changes in one's life. It's also the time to perform cleansing ceremonies ahead of the lunar cycle and to prepare yourself and your space energetically for new cycles and magic. And so some lore associated with the new moon
00:06:43
Speaker
And as we'll see throughout this series with all of the moon cycles, the moon itself has a lot of significance throughout many different cultures. And the new moon specifically has been seen in many different cultural practices and events throughout history. And so to highlight a few, because if I were to talk about every significant cultural like mythology or lore, we'd be here all day. in Many Asian countries, the New Moon is celebrated by eating rice cakes, sweets, and in some instances, fruits. And so in particular, in China, there's a New Moon festival that's called the Mid-Autumn Festival. And people celebrate this by having family reunions, eating mooncakes, lighting lanterns, and watching the moon. And of course, this is done on the New Moon.
00:07:29
Speaker
In Japan, there's a nighttime viewing ceremony called a sukimi and people gather to eat tarot and chestnuts and watch the moon. And again, this is to celebrate ah ah the new moon specifically. And then in cultures that believe in Hinduism, there is the Diwali, the festival of lights. I can't say that without giving my Michael Scott impression, which was terrible, but I can't help it. It's just, if you are a fan of The Office, you know what I'm talking about. and The festival of lights or Diwali falls on the new moon and during this
00:08:08
Speaker
illumination celebration, there is this belief of victory over darkness. And so I think that's really cool because I didn't know that the only thing I knew about Diwali was from the office. And I think it was also celebrated as like a new moon celebration, which I think is really cool. And then so in Africa and many African cultures, the new moon is a time where the veil is said to be at its thinnest. So this is a time where you see communication with ancestral spirits. And then South Africa in particular, the new moon is the time to hold cleansing ceremonies.
00:08:39
Speaker
and so For these, that people will go into bodies of water to physically and spiritually cleanse themselves. and I just think like that's that's so amazing because you see that in so many different cultures. and It just goes back to something that we talk about a lot on the podcast where as much as like we all speak different languages, we all have different cultures, we all have different beliefs, at the end of the day, a lot of what we're energetically aligned with on the Earth is very similar. and Then in ancient Rome, the first day of each month was called the Kelens, which it's seeing it spell, it's K-A-L-E-N-D-S, which reminds me, of course, as calendar. And I'm assuming that's where we got that word. But this day was marked by the appearance of the new moon. And on this day, ancient Romans would get together to perform rituals to honor the new moon, and they would bring sacrifices to honor the gods.
00:09:30
Speaker
And just throughout many agricultural societies all over the world, many farmers would work with the new moon specifically. you know We've discussed this on the podcast before. And then again, with the farmer's almanac, like you said, like this has been culturally significant in so many different cultures. But specifically when it comes to the new moon, this was a time that farmers would sow seeds and engage in activities related to creating bountiful harvests. And they believed that the energy of the new moon would enhance and grow their harvest. And then also, this is a time for divination and fortune telling. And for many, the New Moon's energy is very powerful and can be tapped into for many different divinatory practices like tarot readings, astrology, consultation, scrying, etc. So and this wasn't something that I feel like I might have read it before, but I didn't really think about it until I was researching it. And I, you know, and starting to think about how people use the New Moon energetically to do all sorts of practices.
00:10:30
Speaker
So I also love that you had so much lore because the cycle that I'm covering had like none. Yeah, it was hard thing. Yeah, I thought there would be more honestly, and I was like, most of it is tied to like the full moon, the dark moon. There's a lot of like lore and mythology tied to that. But like for me like the waxing crescent has like none. I was like, all right. Yeah. Well, I love the waxing crescent because I was born under a waxing crescent ah and um Emily were. So I love with the waxing crescent is my favorite. So moving into the new moon and how you can use it in your practice.
00:11:11
Speaker
There are many, many different ways you can incorporate the new moon into

Harnessing New Moon Energy

00:11:15
Speaker
your own practice. But one of the easiest things you can do is just sit down, write down your intentions or whatever you want to manifest in your life and focus on living into those manifestations throughout the month. And so something simple that you can do if you have a green thumb in particular is to take your written down intentions, put them in the bottom of a little planter and place soil on top of the manifestation that you've written on a piece of paper with a new seed. and basically just plant that and allow like as that plant is growing, allow your manifestations to grow along with that plant. And it's a really good visual aid for your manifestation, which is really fucking cool. I love that.
00:11:55
Speaker
Yeah. And then another thing you can do is to meditate on your goals. And this can be as simple or as involved as you want, but something very simple that you can do is to light a white candle while you're meditating and just sit there and really think about what you want to bring into your life. Take the time to sit and visualize the details of what you want and picture it like you already have achieved it. And this is something like if you want more information on manifestation in that way, we have a whole episode on that back in season one. So if you haven't listened to that, go check that out. And then obviously making Moonwater. And this is something that I think all of us have heard about and it's something that you see all the time on TikTok, Instagram, or just researching anything. People are always talking about Moonwater and this can be done during any phase of the moon. And this isn't going to be the only time that we talk about it. I'm assuming on this,
00:12:47
Speaker
series of episodes. But depending on the type of energy you're wanting to harness, for the new moon in particular, it's all about you know creating, manifesting, cleansing, bringing new things in. So setting out a jar with water on the new moon can help you in those manifestation rituals. And once you have set that water out and you've charged it energetically with the moon, you can bring it inside to water your plants. You can cook with it, you can drink it and just use it however you'd like. I know people who will put it in their fridge and they'll take it out every day and take a shot of it like with shot glass um in the morning or they'll put it in their coffee or they'll make food with it, put it in ice cube trays and then put it in their drinks as they drink it throughout the day. Any of those things can be done with your moon water.
00:13:35
Speaker
And then Instant Witch on Instagram has a really amazing abundance ritual that's very simple and anyone can do. And you could do this during, you know, the new moon or even just on the first of the month because it's something that we see a lot. And so you've probably already seen everywhere on TikTok and Instagram and just in any book that you read about manifestation about blowing cinnamon into your door on the first of the month to invite in abundance. It's something that We really always see and most of us practice, but you can also incorporate this on the new moon as well. So all you'll need for this ritual is cinnamon, of course, and a coin from whatever currency you use. So what you'll want to do is take your coin, place it outside of your front porch, and pour cinnamon on the top of the coin.
00:14:22
Speaker
and really coat that bitch. So when you're done, what you want to do is you're going to pick up that cinnamon covered coin with your left hand, because as we know, the left hand corresponds with receiving. And after you pick up that coin, place in your left hand, you blow the cinnamon that is on your coin through your threshold of your house and say an affirmation that you have crafted yourself that really speaks to your wishes for whatever manifestation or affirmation you want. I mean, you can borrow one online. The one instant which uses is, I draw abundance, health, wealth, love, and success effortlessly and abundantly without any blockages for the good of all and with the harm to none. And she says this three times. So that's something that you could use as well. But these are all really simple
00:15:11
Speaker
cost effective ways that you can incorporate the new moon energy into your monthly practice. And if it's something that you guys are already doing, like let me know. And if there's something else that you're doing that, that I didn't discuss on the new moon specifically, let me know too. That's the new moon. I love that. I love that little coin thing. that's Yeah. Isn't it cool? I mean, we you know we've all probably most people listening to this blow cinnamon through their door, but that's ah that's a really, I think like just a little like level up to it, you know? Yes. Yeah. I love that because I do the cinnamon, but I've never thought to coat it in the coin. That's amazing. Yeah. I love that. I'm going to have to

Understanding the Waxing Crescent

00:15:53
Speaker
try it.
00:15:53
Speaker
Alright, so next we're talking about the waxing crescent. This is the second lunar phase, and it's the first of the secondary phases, and it appears as like a slim smile-like shape a day or so after every new moon. This phase occurs between the new moon and the first quarter phase in the northern hemisphere. The crescent appears on the right side of the moon. The lit crescent portion will widen slightly each day, covering more and more of the right side of the moon's surface until the first quarter phase, when the entire right side appears like illuminated, and this process is just flipped to the left side on the southern hemisphere.
00:16:34
Speaker
Something I found really interesting about this phase of the moon is that it will be visible shortly in the west after sunset, the first or second day after the new moon. So if you pay attention, it'll also be setting itself after the sunsets due to the Earth's position at this point in the moon phase, which I've never noticed. Like I don't think I noticed it, but I'm definitely gonna be looking for it now. So like the sun will set and then you'll see the moon as it's setting. Oh, I love that. Right? I was like, that's actually really cool. I've never like, if I've noticed it, I guess I've never like, known that. I don't know. So and then something to note here too, is that the waxing crescent moon does not have anything to do with the earth's shadow across the moon, as your shadow can only fall on the moon during a full moon, when both the moon and the sun are in the opposite.
00:17:29
Speaker
of each other's placement in space or like on either side of the earth. And when this happens, that's when we get a lunar eclipse. I was reading this whole thing by NASA. I was like, you know me, like if any of our episodes have like science in it, I'm like, yes, please. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So I was like, man, all this science on the moon. I love it. Deborah Bird of Earthsky explains this like in a way that made so much sense to me. So she states in terms of the waxen crescent moon, such a moon lies not opposite the sun but on the contrary on nearly the same line of sight as the sun as seen from Earth. There's a shadow on the crescent moon but it's the moon's own shadow.
00:18:10
Speaker
You know how night on earth happens on the part of the earth that's submerged in earth's own shadow? The same is true on the moon. So when you stand looking at the waxen crescent moon, you're seeing a thin fraction of the moon's day side or illuminated side, and the larger fraction of the moon's night side, the side of the moon that's submerged in the moon's own shadow. So that's why we only get that tiny little piece of it. So in terms of its rising and setting times, the Waxing Crescent will rise near the east between sunrise and noon, and will reach its highest peak in the sky in the afternoon, and it will set near the west between sunset and midnight. So lore, there's not really a lot, like I said.
00:18:53
Speaker
not specific to the waxing crescent or like the waxing gibbous which i'll be covering not next week but the week after as like most lore is tied to the full moon the dark moon and just waxing and waning in general not specified to like waxing crescent or waxing gibbous So in general, the waxing moon has been held as a symbol of transformation and growth throughout history, as well as a symbol of a journey from darkness to illumination that also reflects on the cyclical nature of life itself. During ancient times, a waxing moon was seen as a spiritual ally and its energy was harnessed to bring on personal growth and development.
00:19:36
Speaker
Some cultures viewed this phase as a potent time for setting intentions and planting seeds of aspiration, and this is a theme that follows the waxing phases of the moon still today. And some parts of the British Isles believe that a waxing moon on Christmas meant that there would be a good crop in the following fall season, with a waning moon indicating a bad crop. And the first time that you see a crescent moon of any kind, like for the month, you're supposed to take all of your spare coins out of your pocket and put them in the other pocket to ensure good luck for the month, apparently.
00:20:13
Speaker
Oh, I love that. Right? yeah That's interesting. But I never have coins in my pocket. So neither. I guess I'm just gonna have to like put a coin in my pocket from now on. So ways that you can harness the waxing crescent moon's energy in your practice. There's a lot of similarities and what Sam's already talked about. But, specifically, the waxing moon is a period of growth and newness, so you should cast spells to attract, to create, inspire, or even produce. The waxing crescent moon is best for taking initial steps toward your goals that you set during the new moon, and you should focus on building growth and laying down your roots.
00:20:52
Speaker
The correspondences, I don't know. I had a hard time with this because the first few websites that I went to, there was like correspondences for like one phase that I was researching and then like not for other phases. so Colors is completely missing from this one because I couldn't find colors tied to the waxing crescent. But apparently for plants, Basil, lemongrass, mint, lavender, and thyme are tied to the waxing crescent moon. For food, herbs, and spices, you're going to have broccoli, carrots, corn, garlic, onion, sweet potatoes, peppers, colorful vegetables, meat, which especially chicken and fish for this phase apparently, grains, beans, dairy, fruits, basil, fennel, thyme, ginger, turmeric, and honey.
00:21:40
Speaker
crystals, citrine, moonstone, adventuring, clear quartz, amazonite, and yoga poses are mountain, crescent, lunge, warrior 2, tree pose, and camel pose. Oh my god, I love that. you those That's really cool. Yeah. So our one of our listeners is probably like, a I don't know that I'll be able to find it for all of them. that I feel like this information on like the secondary moon phases is really like it's so different depending on what source you're getting it from and like it's just like one person specifically and they're in our show notes for this listed out all of these correspondences for this portion and then when I went to their article on when I was researching
00:22:26
Speaker
ah different phase of the moon they didn't include any of that and I was like what the hell be consistent right yeah yeah so if you guys get them yeah I mean you get that if I can't find them ah sorry I do my best so um the waxing crescent moon has also been tied to abundance as it brings the energy of increasing with it because the moon like the um size of the illumination of the moon is increasing and throughout the phase.

Manifestation Practices & Conclusion

00:22:54
Speaker
And during this time, you should spend time focusing on prosperity, abundance and attraction, creativity, inspiration and motivation, luck, power, business and career, fertility, communication, moving forward and growth, and then friendship and love amplifications and really just any bond with another person. This is a great time to work on that.
00:23:17
Speaker
This is also a great time for manifestation, setting intentions, goals, and wishes, and focusing your determination. and The College of Psychic Studies lists some great things that you can do during this moon phase. and I feel like this is going to be pretty similar a to what Sam already said, but also like I feel like this came up in different phases that I was researching. So I think a lot of these things are just going to be similar throughout this whole series. But they suggest during a waxing crescent moon that you should write down your goals and desires. And they recommend doing it outside under the moon. And since spoken word has power, like speak that list out loud,
00:23:57
Speaker
And you can also leave it to charge under the moon's energy and then place it on your altar and just kind of update it throughout the various cycles. They also suggest that you ask the moon for an unexpected gift. They say to stand out under the moon and put in a request. And Rachel Patterson of the College of Psychic Studies, and she's also part of Kitchen Witch Coven, as well as her own like self-labeled brand, she's posted all over the place. my whole research I was like oh I know this person I already used one of her articles but um she says like when you do this don't be specific so the moon knows better than you do what you need like Sam said you can meditate sitting under the moon or you you can do this both outside or like inside by a window sit quietly focus on the moon and this phase
00:24:46
Speaker
ah you can work with a long-term money spell and plan out your finances. And if working with the waxing crescent is something that you're interested in, check out the College of Psychic Studies link in our show notes because they include like a step-by-step waxing crescent moon spell for prosperity in that article as well. But like make sure that you check what you need prior to the day because there's a lot of stuff that you might have to track down first in order to like do their little step-by-step spell things that you might not have on hand. That's what I'm trying to say. And then for all of our kitchen witches out there, you should work with foods and menus that feed your soul, increase your strength, and revitalize your spirit for any waxing moon phase. So think things that are bright, cheerful, things that are spicy, maybe new and exciting foods.
00:25:38
Speaker
Use food correspondences that correlate to abundance, healing, love, creativity, manifesting, and setting goals and dreams into motion. Try to include recipes that include things like fish or chicken, beans, grains and pastas, vegetables, and natural yogurts. And you should also include herbs and spices that help boost your immune system. And it's also suggested to include desserts that have dairy and that are warming. So yeah, I used for some desserts. I am. all a di Yeah. Well, and like the whole like grains, you know, if you drink alcohol, here we go, like beer, have some, have some bread, have some butter. Yeah. Beer. Have a good like crisp beer. ah the Yeah.
00:26:30
Speaker
I will watch you drink it because I don't like beer, but I will eat all your bread. Oh, I made such a good bread yesterday. And I didn't even take a picture of it when it was done before we like cut into it and started eating it. But it was so good. It was so good. I like it. It's the one that you post the picture of the the dough. yeah dough yeah It was the most beautiful dough. it was a like I didn't want to like i wanted to bake, but I didn't want to spend all day baking bread. Because anyone that bakes bread, you know, it is
00:27:05
Speaker
a process like it's a whole ass fucking day you gotta let it rise and you gotta need it and you gotta let it rise again you gotta shape it like it's a whole thing so i just went online and i was like easy no need bread recipes and i went through a bunch of them and kind of put something together it was the most beautiful dough it came out with such a nice crumb and it's so soft with a nice crispy crust oh it was perfect i loved it oh i hope i go tdy to germany because i You can't wait for your food again. Oh my gosh. You know what how I celebrated Mona Sadly's check? How? I got an egg sandwich from the combini. Was it delicious? It was delicious. The bread here in Japan is really good. ah But it's nothing nothing compared to like European like crispy, like on the outside, soft on the inside bread. That's my favorite. I love that. That nice crunch with the soft inside. Perfect. Perfect. Yeah.
00:28:02
Speaker
Yeah, so that's what I did. I just baked some easy bread because I wanted bread that I didn't want. Like I have a sourdough starter. I could have done a whole like sourdough loaf, but that's like, it's literally like a six hour process. Yeah, that's a lot. I was like, I don't want to do that. This one was so easy. It was like all the ingredients in a bowl, mix it. Cover it with plastic wrap, let it sit for two hours, pop it in the oven for 30 minutes. maybe ah Maybe I'll have to do it. Yeah, I'll send you the like the link that I used. I added like some herbs and spices to have like an herby, delicious bread. Nothing is better than an herby fucking bread. like Right? I am a slut for an herby bread. like Oh my god. Put some butter on it. oh yeah It was so good. So good.
00:28:48
Speaker
Oh, yes, send me that. yeah Send it to me because I'm going to eat some fucking bread this weekend. Yeah, I'm gonna do it. Yum. But we'll stop boring everybody with bread talk.
