Introduction to GSPN

00:00:10
officialgspn
Well, that is a sound that you might be hearing quite a lot more of, particularly if you're a podcast fan, particularly if you you're a football fan, and if you listen to football podcasts, you'll definitely be hearing more of it. That's the jingle, the intro to Global Sports Podcast Network, something that I'm very proud to have been working on for the last year with a man called Nick Britton, who's joining me today. Nick is our vice president of talent and operations at Global Sports Podcast Network. He's been right at the center of the development of this. So it might be a good opportunity just to talk through GSPN. So Nick, warm welcome, and let's get a feel for what we're doing here and why it's just going to be such a game changer.
00:00:56
Nick Britten
Well, thanks, Ken. It's it's really it's a great to be here. It's a really exciting time to be here because it's taken a long time to to get this going. We've been planning this for well over a year. And just to be recording this for first podcast, is it's just great. It's a very, very exciting moment. So what is

GSPN's Unique Podcast Offering

00:01:13
Nick Britten
it? Well, it's something that's brand new, and it's something that the world doesn't have at the moment. And that is a daily network of football podcasts. There's 28 podcasts per day. 20 of them are based around English Premier League teams, so there's going to be a one podcast per day for each team. And then there's going to be a daily football podcast on women's football, on fantasy football, and then an English sort of, or sort of a Premier League, shall I say, wrap-up.
00:01:41
Nick Britten
broadcast in six different languages. So we've got English, we've got Mandarin, we've got Hindi, we've got Arabic, we've got Spanish, and we've got Italian. ah So it is truly a global a global network. and what The reason we've done it like this is we've done a lot of research into this and all the data tells us so two, three, four, five things. One of them is that there is an exponential desire for Premier League content and for Premier League team content. all around the world. It just never stops growing. It's huge. The second thing is that advertisers and sponsors are moving away from traditional advertising into more over-the-top on-demand services. In that, podcasting sits you know very, very high, if not at the top. And within podcasting, sports podcasting sits at the top of that. ah Now, advertisers struggle to get hold of
00:02:34
Nick Britten
a lot of podcasts in what's a very fragmented market. You've got to go to each individual podcast and what have you. What we're doing, which is completely brand new and unique, is developing an entire network of all these 28 podcasts under one umbrella, one brand. And we can say to advertisers, give us your advert and we will spread it right across the network and indeed right across the world. So it is very, very different to what's out there already.
00:02:58
officialgspn
Yeah, it does. And I think also for both listeners and podcasters, it's a completely different experience. I mean, in relation to listeners, of course, one of the things that you know I listen to a lot of podcasts, we listened to a lot of podcasts when we were developing this network. And some of them go on quite a long time. Some of them can be quite repetitive. Some of them are really quite short. What we wanted to establish was much more consistency. And we developed a certain style that fits a certain duration of podcast. And we've got some structure in terms of the content on a day by day basis. So it might be worth just talking about those two things in terms of how we ended up with a duration of the 30 minutes, and also how we how we decided exactly what we were going to cover each day.

Research Behind GSPN's Structure

00:03:49
Nick Britten
Okay. Well, first of all, we did indeed listen to a lot of podcasts, but we also done a lot of research and that's that's industry research, it's academic research. There was a lot of data research in there. And a lot of this is data driven. It's data led to tell us you know where we are. In many ways, it's helped shape the idea. And what the data was telling us is that the sweet spot for duration of podcasts is 30 minutes. what the data was also telling us, and I know this myself from a career of broadcasting and journalism with the media, ah is that audiences like to be
00:04:24
Nick Britten
taking on a journey, they like to know what's coming next. They don't like to be left sort of hanging in the wind going, well, what does the next 20 minutes, half an hour look like?
00:04:27
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:04:31
Nick Britten
So we've developed a very clear structure ah whereby within those 30 minute podcasts, Monday will be a wrap up of the match day of the weekend. Tuesdays will be a deep dive into tactics. Tactics Tuesday, Wildcard Wednesday where podcasts can use our imagination and do whatever they like. Thursday will be around a crossover Thursday so the two podcasting teams for the corresponding Premier League fixtures of the weekend get together and fight it out online ah very much and I think some of it will be a ah fight but thankfully only online but it's going to be entertaining that and Friday is very much a forecast looking ahead to your team's weekend games.
00:05:03
officialgspn
Okay.
00:05:14
Nick Britten
So whatever day it is that the podcast is broadcast the audience will know Exactly what's coming. And that's very important.
00:05:22
officialgspn
I think it's a great way of listening. It's a great system. One of the things that's really knocked me out in the creation of this network, and it's been a long time in ah development, has been the quality of the podcast as you come from the world of broadcast media more than I do. But I've just knocked out with the energy, the enthusiasm, the drive, the passion, the commitment, and actually the experience of a lot of the people we've been able to attract to the network.
00:05:51
Nick Britten
Yeah, we didn't listen, we didn't know what we're going to get. We started putting out adverts for this just before Christmas, so about seven months into the development of the of the business. We did did not know what we're going to get. And I've been blown away. I've been absolutely knocked out by a very surprised by the quality of people that we're getting.

Talent Recruitment for GSPN

00:06:10
Nick Britten
We've got through the door, Premier League broadcasters or commentators and broadcasters who already doing that in the Premier League right across the world and in different languages. We've got people who've got fantastic experience at big, big, big broadcasting businesses, TalkSport, BBC, Sky. We've got people who do this for a hobby, who've got big followers, who've got people who do this for a bit of a living. And not only are they bringing all this expertise and all this experience,
00:06:36
Nick Britten
They're also big fans of their teams. They're bringing also that massive passion, that desire that only supporters can bring. They're big supporters of their clubs. So that's a really, really heady mix of talent and experience and passion. Big, big football fans.
00:06:55
officialgspn
Thank
00:06:56
Nick Britten
ah On top of that, they're all great people. you know We have formed a real collaborative, a real a community, and they're helping guide us. And listen, I'm not going to lie, there's people who know more about social media than I do. And a lot of these yeah young people have grown up and lived social media. So they're able to advise us on stuff as well, which is very important. yeah to so So just create that very much community feel. So lots and lots going on.
00:07:19
officialgspn
you.
00:07:20
Nick Britten
And I'll be super impressed making new friends, making a new colleagues with the people that are getting through the door.
00:07:25
officialgspn
Yeah, I can't particularly wait for those crossover Thursdays. They're going to be feisty affairs, because you know everybody everybody you know supports their team. And yeah know it's going to be a really and fascinating listening. So I just can't wait for those things to get off the ground. So talking about that, you know when does this all start?

Launch Date and Future Plans

00:07:43
officialgspn
When can listeners start to look forward to this daily content so of their team being covered?
00:07:49
Nick Britten
Well, it kicks off on August the 12th, which is five days before the start of the Premier League season officially. And so we'll be delivering daily content from ah August the 12th, Monday to Friday. oh You can find your podcasts. Well, as the old cliche goes, wherever you find your podcasts. So we're going out on Google, we're going out on Spotify, we're going out on Apple. The social media will be starting to be rolled out at the moment. So you can find us or Ken and I on LinkedIn through Global Sports Podcast Network on LinkedIn. But we're also starting to roll out individual teams and company on TikTok, on Insta, and on X.
00:08:30
Nick Britten
Go forward, we'll have a big presence. Hopefully you won't be able to miss us, a big presence on all of those different platforms.
00:08:36
officialgspn
Brilliant. And of course it's just a start because we've got a vision. That vision is 28 Daily Podcasts from always the 12th. But in 2025 and 2026 and 2027, that just grows and grows and grows because this format we see as being relevant to other sports, other teams, other leagues, other clubs. So interested to get your view in terms of where you see see this move in two of the next few years.
00:09:03
Nick Britten
Well, theres there's two ways to scale up the business pretty quickly and two ways in which we can diversify. One is it into other sports. So I'm really keen to get a cricket, daily cricket podcast up and running. And I think that could be, you know, that could not be just one podcast.
00:09:13
officialgspn
Yeah.
00:09:16
Nick Britten
It could be several within that banner, brand, that silo. I think cricket's huge. It's got a huge opportunity and potential for that. but So it's horse racing, so it's golf. So it's looking at other big global sports to move into. ah We can look at other teams to move into. So we've already started looking at a championship, ah some of the big European teams. And then on top of that, another another sort of strain of diversification here. is actually doing different types of podcasts. So more documentary style, more newsy, different viewpoints.
00:09:50
Nick Britten
So we're already talking to ah football managers, football players around getting them involved in and giving their views on stuff.
00:09:55
officialgspn
you
00:09:57
Nick Britten
So that won't be daily content, I'd say, but it will all be important cod test content underneath the banner, underneath the brand. And again, something that advertisers could get ah get their arms around with one simple advert, some of the podcasters could get involved in, we want more podcasters with different skill sets. And it just brings a massive of diversification diversification to our audience, which is great because what we don't want them to listen to just one podcast in the network, we want them to listen to loads.

Closing Remarks and Excitement

00:10:24
officialgspn
Absolutely. how Well, I hope that's given everyone a bit of a flavor for what to expect from ah from Global Sports Podcast Network from August the 12th. I cannot wait. And I know you're equally excited, Nick. And so are 100, so podcasters who are just raring to go.
00:10:38
Nick Britten
and
00:10:41
officialgspn
So very much looking forward to that. I'm going to play that little jingle again, because I really like it. And hey, no, I'm going to keep it absolutely
00:10:47
Nick Britten
Yeah, everybody watch, everybody watch Ken's head nod. He can't help, dar he can't help but dance this. He's got this automatic thing there. So come on. Go on, not away mate. Play the jingle. Off you go.
00:10:56
officialgspn
I'm going to keep it absolutely still. Serious.
00:11:04
Nick Britten
right going There you go. It's gone.
