Introduction and Summer Gaming Vibes
00:00:29
Speaker
Welcome, everybody. This is Games Over Plastic, episode number 39. I am Midnight. As always, I am joined by the two most amazing co-hosts in the whole industry, of course.
00:00:42
Speaker
First and foremost, we have the man, the myth, the legend, Sean Mason. How are you doing today, sir? Doing great. Enjoying my time off or in the midst of the summer. I've got a lot of color on my face.
00:00:56
Speaker
I'm really enjoying it. Playing a lot of games. And yeah, I'm excited to talk about video games today. feel like it's been a while, though it's only been you know the usual time. just feels like been a while.
00:01:07
Speaker
It's been a while. It's been a while. That song, man. That song used to play nonstop back in the day. Jesus. that So that was one of the most played out songs I've ever heard. It was always on the radio. Anytime I got in my car to go somewhere, that that song was on the radio.
00:01:23
Speaker
ah Because that was back in the radio days. Last but not least, we have the master of graphics and the master of chattery.
Life Changes and Work-Life Balance
00:01:30
Speaker
Hodge, how you doing, sir? Of chattery? That's right. That's your new title. You're the master of all things Chad.
00:01:37
Speaker
Oh, Chad. I thought were talking like chat. like No, no. You're chatty catty. You're chatty catty. No, I'm not talking about the dude from Final Fantasy VII Remake. Ah, yes.
00:01:49
Speaker
ah But yeah, I'm ah i'm doing good. i ah Yesterday was my last day at my job. ah If anyone who is a regular listener, would sound kind of weird because I was like... Four episodes ago, I got this job, but i was so burnt out and tired that I was like, I need to change. It just wasn't a fit. So I'm moving on. I gave myself a week off.
00:02:09
Speaker
ah Hopefully my work does not listen to this and hear that because they think I put in a two week, but I put in a one week notice. So. Give myself to the boss right now. Yeah, I gave myself a week off so I could just relax and game. But I have barely been gaming over these last couple of months as I mean, we haven't done that many. What have we been playing so segments? But I have not had any time to game. So I am excited to have a week off just to hopefully crank through Death Stranding 2 and relax a bit. So, yeah, I am excited to that and I'm excited to be talking games.
00:02:41
Speaker
Heck yeah, brother. You deserve it. You deserve that week off. um Anytime I ever switch jobs, I almost always try to give myself like a week to 10 days off if i if at all possible um before you start the new job because you need that break to kind of recharge, um especially when you start a new job. You know, you can't take any PTO off for like quite a while because you're starting training and all that. So it's good to have a nice break right before you start, you know, be fresh. Exactly. like Exactly.
Episode Overview and Listener Engagement
00:03:07
Speaker
Well, everybody, this is Games Over Plastic, episode 39. In this episode, we are going to be doing our iconic games for each console from 1985 to 2004. So we're going to go through each console. This will be hosted by the one and only Sean Mason this section.
00:03:24
Speaker
ah So we're going to go through each console and we're going to talk about the games that are iconic, the one game mainly, that we think of most when we think of this console, the iconic one. We're going to get into the fantasy results finally. We're going to have a little update for you guys on our fantasy draft picks that we did in January.
00:03:40
Speaker
We're going to have the squad results when we got together with ah obviously us three plus Lock, Mort, and Ben, and that was a lot of fun. If you missed that episode, um Go back and watch that now or listen to it now and then come back and get the result. Because that episode was so fun.
00:03:55
Speaker
Everything was going crazy in that episode. It was so chaotic. I loved it. But yeah, so look forward to that. Of course, what we're playing, we'll be doing that. And we have a write-in. So we're back.
00:04:06
Speaker
We're back to full force, like full Final Form Frieza over here. um Let me get the administrative stuff out of the way real quick. Games Over Plastic, the podcast for the agnostic gamers.
00:04:18
Speaker
You can find this on YouTube and full 4K glory at youtube.com slash at games over plastic. It's also available on all audio platforms, Spotify, Apple Music, Overcast, Pocket Cast, Everycast.
00:04:32
Speaker
Leave us likes, leave us comments, rate us five stars on Apple and Spotify. That will help our podcast move up and maybe find a new listener or two. And we would appreciate that. And if you want to be featured in the write-in, like the person that's coming up later is, all you have to do is you can direct message Sean or you can leave a message on one of our videos um or whatever.
00:04:53
Speaker
um Yeah, I think that's it. Are we ready to jump into some fun stuff, guys? Indeed.
00:05:03
Speaker
That was super. All right. I love that. Oh, yeah. And Sean, you got your smoke alarms fixed, by
Humor and Household Mishaps
00:05:08
Speaker
the way. I did. Hopefully they they have not gone off since I got them fixed. After last week, it was ah well the last episode was probably the low longest it's ever gone off.
00:05:17
Speaker
Like ever consecutively. couple of minutes. Yeah, know. So um I got them fixed that Tuesday. i was like, you know, screw this. i'm paying the money. They came in. It was like a four and a half, five hour job. They had to like tear down walls and all that.
00:05:29
Speaker
But they fixed it. They have not gone off since then. And I swear to God, if they go off today, i will die. That'd be hilarious. It should go off only during GOP. That'd be great.
00:05:40
Speaker
I've had a good run. Yeah. I'm sorry to report that the electrician was not able to fix my cat, so he will probably still go off during this episode and all future episodes. You know, he's a part of the show's lore, though, so it is what it is.
00:05:55
Speaker
Yeah. So let's go ahead and jump into the fantasy
Fantasy Draft Updates and Results
00:06:00
Speaker
results. Let's go ahead and start with that. Fantasy update, not results. Results is like the final. Yeah, the fantasy update. And of course, we're going to pass it over to the king of fantasy, Hodge. What's going on in the world of fantasy?
00:06:12
Speaker
So we ah we're getting along the long in the tooth on this one. It's we're getting there. A lot of people have most their games out. So midnight you have, uh, you're including your safety.
00:06:26
Speaker
You have six year games out. You have two more to come. Neither of them have been delayed out of the year. So you're looking good in that sense. Uh, uh, Sean has one game that was delayed. So his safety pick is now in, uh, in play, which is crimson desert.
00:06:40
Speaker
Uh, that has not come out yet though. So that'll be a good game. And it might not be coming out this year. But i mean, they said it is. but Oh, my gosh. you There's no way.
00:06:50
Speaker
He got it fixed and it's going off. That's good that's correct I feel bad for Sean, actually, because he spent money on this. Yeah. What the fuck? What's going on with that? I need to get that fixed. Is it good? Did it stop?
00:07:04
Speaker
Yeah, it was very quick. I don't know. maybe it was like i don't know Maybe it was just an echo. Was it Sephiroth?
00:07:13
Speaker
Did Sephiroth do this? Yeah. um Anyway, were talking about Sean. Yeah, so Sean's Crimson Desert is in play now because GTA got delayed all the year. And I have had, what is five games release of my eight, one including my safety.
00:07:30
Speaker
I'm guessing safety will come into play because do not think Judas is coming. out this year i think that was uh that was a long time next year yeah that's yeah apparently yeah that might be a 2027 game for all we know but uh yeah but as of right now midnight is sitting third at 83.2 points uh sean at second second at 85.7 am first at 87.3 second at eighty five point seven and i am in first at eighty seven point three Midnight, your highest rated game is Mario Kart World. Good pick. That was a very out there pick because it hadn't been announced when you drafted it at 87 points.
00:08:04
Speaker
ah Sean is rocking a 91 with Split Fiction, and I have a 92 with Claire Obscure as my highest game. So... so yeah looking at these but yeah looking at these results i'm gonna need like because i think prime 4 is easily gonna be like a 90 i'm gonna need dragon quest 1 and 2 hd from hodge there i'm gonna need that to be like people knock it for not having like great quality of life updates that's what i'm gonna need and then i'm gonna need and i'm gonna need silk song to get like a 90.
00:08:38
Speaker
Hodge, do you have the graphic? Can you post it somewhere? You probably already did, and I just don't see it. Let me, yeah, one second. du Yeah, I'm not going to win. the Spoiler alert, Midnight is not going to win this, unfortunately. Yeah, because Trails in the Sky will probably be like an 80 to an 82, and Ghost of Yote will probably be like an 85. Yeah, it's it's not going to happen.
00:08:57
Speaker
It's a shame. Dragon Crest 3 had an 85, so... Yeah. 1 and 2 will probably be similar to that, so... Sorry. Unless the Outer Worlds 2 could get a 100 with that new price.
00:09:10
Speaker
So did none none of us had Donkey Kong, huh? It wasn't announced. yeah Well, neither was Mario Kart. well yeah Yeah, I guess someone could have said a new Donkey Kong platformer. Who the hell is going to say that as a draft pick?
00:09:24
Speaker
well Unless you get down round 30 when you're desperate. Like, i don't know, maybe a new Donkey Kong game? and I'm going to take the new Ice Climbers game. Yeah, right. New Dig Dug. I'm pretty sure. I'm pretty sure that I said ah the new Donkey Kong instead of Trails in the Sky. have to go back and listen.
00:09:42
Speaker
Yeah. I'm just kidding. That definitely happened. Trails in the Sky will get a 95 and I'm going to come back. I hope. Yeah. Not really. I really don't care.
00:09:52
Speaker
yeah I don't care. But yeah, so that is our fantasy so far. I am winning. It doesn't seem like I will lose, but anything can happen. So we'll we'll see, I guess.
00:10:03
Speaker
All right. Yeah. Well, congratulations to ah HodgePodge Studios. and Unless, man, I Love Tom Brady Productions comes back. love Tom Brady. Could happen. Could happen.
00:10:15
Speaker
You never know. Silksong could be like a 98. Could be. Could be. I think Crimson Desert is going to be a great game, but I don't know if it'll come out this year, though. Yeah, as I'm a little worried about that. I might get a zero. I might get a big zero.
00:10:28
Speaker
kind of That's a game that I might play. All right. So that is the fantasy results. And of course, if you're watching the video version, this graphic will be on the screen, I'm sure. um So you'll be able to see it. And it's great. Great job, Hodge.
00:10:40
Speaker
And now we have some more results. We have the squad results. And of course, Sean Mason, you hosted that. What's going on with squad? All right. So squad results. We have all five places. So I'm going to start from the bottom up.
00:10:55
Speaker
So coming in in fifth place with a merely three votes. Was midnight. This is rigged. What is this crap, man?
00:11:06
Speaker
Fifth place? Yep, fifth place. that's when the With seven votes, coming in fourth place was Lockmort. Okay, hold on, hold on. Did Meatball vote for me at least?
00:11:19
Speaker
No, he actually voted for me. Meatball, you traitor. but um we'll We'll talk later. Unbelievable. Seven votes. Lockmort. Coming in...
00:11:31
Speaker
In third place, with 17 votes,
00:11:38
Speaker
Podge. In third place with 17? Yeah. I had three votes. Jesus Christ, man. Dude, my picks were not that bad. I don't remember what I picked, but...
00:11:49
Speaker
and reason I don't know. I was looking at something. I thought you said that you were fourth, midnight was third, and then I was third. I'm like, wait, what? I didn't realize you but said one. I honestly don't remember what I picked, but they couldn't have been that bad. Three votes.
00:12:01
Speaker
this This is messed up. Coming in with one more vote than Hodge in second place with 18 votes. Sean Mason. That's me.
00:12:12
Speaker
no oh Sweet that out. And that means our winner With a grand total of 20 votes. The mayor. Was Ben Smith, our mayor.
00:12:25
Speaker
Wow. So congratulations to let over results so I can make a graphic to put up on Twitter for everyone to see. right, I will. Yep, so there we go.
00:12:36
Speaker
Ben, congratulations. You have won. Squad, Midnight, you came in last. Yeah, what a scam. You're going to lose fantasy. going lose squad. It's great.
00:12:50
Speaker
It's rigged. It's rigged. If I could do a Trump voice, I would do a Trump voice. I would be like, this is rig so which
00:12:59
Speaker
this is rigged. That's my expression there in the Discord to these results. I'm not pleased. All right. Oh, there we go. Yeah, that's a great picture of me.
00:13:10
Speaker
yeah It's a good one. for That's how I feel about getting three votes. You know, i'm ah I'm disappointed in you, the people who voted. i know it's because I picked Starfield and everybody hates Starfield, but come on, man. That was a good vehicle. You got to make it yourself. yeah Sorry, my dad didn't even vote for me. My dad voted for Hodge.
00:13:28
Speaker
Who's the bigger traitor? Sean's dad or Meatball? Probably Sean's dad since he sired you. yeah I don't like how you said that, but okay.
00:13:41
Speaker
I don't like how I said that either. All right. So that has been the squad results. Congrats to Ben Smith and Sean and Hodge for very good, respectable results. Lockmort had what? 17?
00:13:52
Speaker
seventeen Lockmore had seven. Oh, he had seven. Okay. So that's okay. Much better than three. So good congrats to everyone but me. You did great. ah But that was a lot of fun.
00:14:04
Speaker
And now, shall we move on to what we're playing?
Game Reviews: Death Stranding 2
00:14:08
Speaker
We haven't done this in a while. So let's go ahead and we'll do the opposite, I guess, of the order that we're going to do coming up. So I'll start off with the what we're playing. How about that?
00:14:16
Speaker
Let's do that. So I have been playing a trio of games. So first of all, when we last spoke, I mentioned that I was playing Death Stranding 2 from Kojima and I did play that game and I beat the game and boy, is it a great game.
00:14:33
Speaker
hands are tired. arms are tired. Yeah, my arms, legs, back, everything hurts from carrying these damn packages. ah But yeah, Death Stranding 2 was an awesome game. This is my game of the year so far for 2025.
00:14:45
Speaker
It has dethroned Claire Obscure Expedition 33, which is now number two, I think. Who knows? But yeah, dan Death Stranding 2 was awesome. This game was really good.
00:14:57
Speaker
Absolutely love it. Love it very much. ah I think this game wasn't as good as the first one, in my opinion. I think I enjoyed the first one a little bit better. Maybe the novelty of it. The fact that I was on my feet more often in the first game. And again, that's my choice.
00:15:11
Speaker
But they give you access, ready access to the awesome buggy, like really early on. And man, I was driving all over in Death Stranding 2 with the awesome buggy and how it like it grabs packages for you and it keeps them safe from the timefall. Like that's the way to go.
00:15:24
Speaker
Like, why would you walk on your feet when you got the buggy, you know? So I'm not going to get into any spoiler beats here or anything, but I'll say that I thought the story was pretty cool. As usual, I was confused at parts because it's Kojima, but at the end of the game, it all made sense for the most part.
00:15:40
Speaker
um Pretty good. On Midnight Critic, I would say I would give this a 90 on Midnight Critic. It's a 9 out of 10. And it is my game of the year. So Death Stranding 2 has been beaten.
00:15:52
Speaker
Any thoughts, boys? All right, why don't you talk about it now? since Yeah, so I haven't really been playing it other than some multiplayer games here and there with friends when I've had time. But I haven't played anything else other than Death Stranding.
00:16:04
Speaker
Um, it is, yeah it's definitely more of the same. Uh, so if, if you like the first one, you're goingnna like the second one. If you don't like the first one you're probably not gonna like the second one. Uh, but I'm about 16 hours in. I've been obviously super busy. Haven't had time to get too far into it, but I'm loving the story. Uh, I, I like that there's more characters this time around rather than in the first one.
00:16:28
Speaker
You could tell it was kind of hastily made because Sam was basically the only like physical person half the time where and then you were talking to people on like screens, like almost the entire game rather than like in person ah with minor exceptions, of course. But this one, you're kind of with a crew and stuff at time like the entire games or so far from what I've played.
00:16:49
Speaker
And the setting is It's a beautiful game. It is gorgeous. ah Some cut scenes look straight up photorealistic. ah In game, it looks very good. Obviously, I'm playing on the PS Professional, so it looks a gorgeous. But the gameplay has improved. Taking out bandits feels a little more challenging, even though i'm playing it on journalism mode because that's how I live my life now.
00:17:12
Speaker
um But yeah, I'm i'm loving it. it's It's a fantastic game. I love, obviously, the first one. i've I have, I don't shut up about it very often. So ah yeah, I, I, I'm really loving it. Obviously I'll have more to say when i get further in, but so far 16 hours in, i am in Australia. I've,
00:17:32
Speaker
I've connected probably a quarter of the island so far, so I still have ways to go. But I am. Yes, I am loving this game. It is fantastic. It is exactly what I was hoping for ah from a sequel.
00:17:46
Speaker
it It didn't change too much, but it changed what it needed and made stuff a little easier. It was kind of odd to me, though, that. though it's I like it because you know how there's so many games where it's like once you get to the sequel, like you're super powered from the end of the first game, but then you lose all your stuff and you have to gain it all back again, like that kind of stuff in sequels.
00:18:03
Speaker
It doesn't do that. You're able to build roads wide right away. You're basically able to get the vehicles right away. Like you're not you're not suffering through the start of the game just because the game wants you to.
00:18:15
Speaker
It just, you get, you get what you had at the end of the first game and then you're able to add onto that for even more stuff throughout the game. And I think that's a great way to do a sequel in general, not just with Death Stranding. So but yeah, I'm, I'm loving this game. So I'm excited to keep playing it now, especially that I'll have a little more free time with my new job. Hopefully I'll be able to actually crank through it and have my week off to maybe even be at this next week. So yeah, it's fantastic.
00:18:42
Speaker
Yeah. Awesome, man. um What chapter are you in? Do you know? Five or six. I can't remember. Somewhere around there. Yeah, i've i've ah I've fought the Metal Gear Solid looking dude once already. And yeah, it's been yeah, I love it. It's awesome. it's great i've I've been introduced to Rainy, Tomorrow, all those characters. So I have everyone in my party, I believe, unless there's other people get added eventually. But yeah, I have Rainy and Tomorrow on my ship and
00:19:13
Speaker
I have fought Metal Gear Man once. Raindrops keep falling on my head. Yeah. Oh, and the soundtrack in this game is just as great as the first game's soundtrack. I love listening.
00:19:25
Speaker
Actually, I didn't do it in the first game, but I've been doing it in this one where while I'm delivering, actually throw the music player. I didn't do it on the first one. I would either just listen to the game itself or I throw on my own podcast.
00:19:36
Speaker
But I've been doing the music player this time, and there's just so many, so much good music. It's such a such a vibe. I love it. Yeah, the combat in this game is way better than the first one. It's a lot more fun. It's a lot more satisfying. You have more weapons.
00:19:50
Speaker
The weapons feel like they have more impact. It feels more actiony. You feel more powerful. um It's awesome, except for I still don't really enjoy fighting the BTs. I think fighting the BTs sucks. um Like you either have to like sneak up on them and cut their ah umbilical cord or you're just basically like throwing blood grenades at them and it's just not very compelling gameplay.
00:20:09
Speaker
But fighting all the other enemies is awesome. ah The world is awesome. The music is awesome. The graphics and characters. And it's just fun being just traveling and and delivering these packages. There's just something relaxing and, ah you know, therapeutic about it.
00:20:24
Speaker
And i love I love it, man. Shout out to Kojima. If he wanted to make a Death Stranding 3, I would be down. Yeah. Yeah, I would play it. Do we want a Death Stranding 3 or do we want him to do it something new?
00:20:35
Speaker
know. I don't know. It depends how it ends. I didn't think we needed Death Stranding 2, so. Yeah. We'll see. Well, I'm not going to spoil how it ends. You'll find out. Yeah, we don't. All right.
00:20:46
Speaker
So are you satisfied then with Death Stranding 2? Yeah. Okay. I'm excited that you're going a week now to to get some
Game Reviews: Suikoden Remasters
00:20:54
Speaker
gaming in. That's good. Yeah. All right. too um Next up for me, i am playing the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD remakes or remasters or whatever.
00:21:06
Speaker
um And I have now beaten both of them, Sean. I've now beaten both Suikoden 1 and last night I beat Suikoden 2. um So that's cool. I've now beaten both of these games. Now, these are like rema remasters, I guess, of these really old ah JRPGs that obviously I had never played before. Sean recommended these to me.
00:21:27
Speaker
And I would say that they were pretty good. They were pretty good. um If I was going to score these on Midnight Critic, I would probably say around an 80, maybe an 81 to 82 at the high end.
00:21:40
Speaker
I thought these were pretty good, ah pretty decent stories in both of them. I like the characters. um Although there's 108 characters, I think, in each game. So because of that, the characters are pretty watered down. A lot of them don't have much of a story. You get like a little blurb here and there. But for the most part, that's about it, except for the core people um that are in like every scene.
00:22:01
Speaker
For a lot of scenes, they're more fleshed out. um But it was good. I mean, I enjoyed the combat. The turn-based combat was pretty fun. You get six people in your party, and you can mix and match because there's 108, so there's a lot of different options.
00:22:12
Speaker
um yeah You get these little runes that you can put on to add abilities and stuff. And overall, I thought it was pretty good. um I thought the inventory system was a bit clunky. It was a little bit dated. But that makes sense because it is literally a very old game.
00:22:25
Speaker
So, um but yeah, i mean, I enjoyed these games. I don't think these were like genre defining or ah game of the year caliber games or anything for me. Like guess it's just like an eight, like an eight out of 10.
00:22:38
Speaker
But I did enjoy them. i'm yeah I'm not mad about it. I had fun. I liked them. um So yes, Suikoden 1 and 2 has been beaten. Sean? Yeah, well, we're going to be doing a special DLC spoiler cast for one and two.
00:22:53
Speaker
um So I replayed one. I ended up 100%ing it. I wasn't going to. And then I'm like, yeah, I'm just going to do it because I'm 100% of it so many times. i don't have to use a guide or anything. um I will say if you think the characters are shallow in this game, ah you had mentioned to me you wanted to play the hundred heroes.
00:23:11
Speaker
um there It's even worse in that game. and The Eugen Chronicles. Yeah, it's even worse in that game. I will say this, though. There are I think you might have missed some of the more fledged out side characters that you don't have to necessarily have to recruit.
00:23:26
Speaker
um Like, I'll ask you, did you recruit Clive? I don't remember. Not from Final Fantasy 16. All right, so you probably missed out on that one. Which game? is He's in both of them.
00:23:39
Speaker
yeah You know how bad I am with names. I'm i'm the worst. I know. yeah Keep talking. I'll look him up. Well, um Clive is my favorite character in Suikoden 1 and 2. I think I missed him.
00:23:50
Speaker
Yeah. um He's freaking super fast, awesome combat, really cool backstory. And it's ah's the backstory kind of carries over from game one to game two. So you recruit him in game one and you do some of the quests and then you find out more of it in game two. So it's awesome.
00:24:07
Speaker
I love Suikoden 1. I love Suikoden 2. My favorite personally is Suikoden 2. um But this gave me a better appreciation of the first one because... The first one was, again, it was like, it is kind of dated, the first one. The second one, still a little dated, but I think Midnight, if they ever come out with 3, 4, and 5, I think you might like it a little bit better. There's voice acting, it's fully 3D.
00:24:26
Speaker
They weren't PS2 games. um But I, we all know, I prefer text to voice acting, so I really like these old games. It's a very classic story of like a, you know, rebellion, we're rising up, we're gonna take down the big bad empire.
00:24:42
Speaker
I really like it. I love the variety of characters you can get and the way you can customize your party. um so yeah. I thought good. This Clive dude looks cool. I wish I would have recruited him. he looks like ah He looks like a Metal Gear Solid Robin Hood. Like, he's got, like, the hood. is this a gun he has? I can't tell.
00:24:59
Speaker
or a staff? um i think it's the staff. But yeah, no, he looks he looks badass. I wish I had got him. But I had some cool characters, though. Like, in the second game, I had that killie with the red. You know, the red dude?
00:25:12
Speaker
Yeah, he was pretty cool. Anyway, we'll talk about that more on our special episode, huh? Yeah, one second. Did you...
00:25:22
Speaker
Did you like Makumiko from Speaking in 2? He's a squirrel, the leader of the five squirrels. I don't think I got him either. either Oh, my gosh. i got i got probably like 70 of them.
00:25:34
Speaker
Okay, yeah. so I missed out on a good 30-some. Yeah, he's it's a side quest. The second one has a lot more side quests. But, yeah, good games. We'll be talking about more of that in our DLC.
00:25:46
Speaker
Yeah, we will. We'll definitely talk about it more because Hodge is probably falling asleep like, what is this crap? But, ah all right. So that's what I've been playing, friends. I have beaten Death Stranding 2 and I've beaten Suikoden 1 and 2.
00:25:57
Speaker
So in the last month, I've been doing some gaming and that's good. ah Sean Mason, go and bring us home here. What have you been playing, sir? All right. So I've been pretty busy playing some great games. I'm to start off with Donkey Kong Bonanza. This game, woof.
00:26:16
Speaker
Talk about ah defining Switch 2 game right here. This game is freaking amazing. It is a great 3D platformer. it's It's definitely better than DK64 as like the second 3D platformer in Donkey Kong game.
00:26:30
Speaker
I'm in layer 12 right now. So there's like... layer Each layer is kind of like the hub world. and there's like... This where you can collect your bananas and you can connect... so ah collect your fossils and everything.
00:26:41
Speaker
It is a blast to run through and just, like, destroy everything. You can literally destroy, like, pretty much everything. Just punch right through it. Searching for the Bananas is super cool. I think they really learned from Odyssey, because it's the same team that did Odyssey, um that they make, like...
00:26:57
Speaker
In Odyssey, there were so many moons that you could just like run up. They'd be like a moon just sitting there and'd be like, oh, you get this moon! But they make the bananas much more worthwhile getting because there's challenging aspects or destroying something. There's nothing then there's none just sitting there.
00:27:12
Speaker
um The different layers have all different settings. like um There's this one, it's called the... it's called like the It's basically like the relaxing kingdom, and it's like a vacation almost. And there's like giant watermelon everywhere, and there's giant like fruit everywhere. And it's like almost like a beach.
00:27:26
Speaker
That's really cool. There's a snowy area. There's a there's like a forest area. It is so cool. You can transform into various creatures. A lot of the creatures you could ride in the old Donkey Kong Country games, you can kind of transform into them using like your bonanza power.
00:27:39
Speaker
It's a super fun game. I thought that the redesign of Donkey Kong was going to throw me off. And really, i haven't really even noticed it to the point where I'm like, oh, this is is like normal now. um Pauline is actually super, like, super interesting character. this like and The story of this is actually pretty good for like a Nintendo game, like, for like a non-Zelda game.
00:28:02
Speaker
It's like super intriguing. Like you want to know what's gonna like what's going on with this world. Because there's like there's like these like group of villains. And they're stealing like the banana. They're called the Banandiums. It's like the ancient gem. They're shaped like bananas obviously.
00:28:15
Speaker
And like you're trying to figure out what's going on. And like how did Pauline end up in this world. I really like it. The variety of side characters. Like the variety of like characters in each layer. They're all different types of people. They fit with the theme of the world.
00:28:28
Speaker
have different costumes. I'm really enjoying it. I'm 100%ing each layer before I move on. So like I'm like really getting going through it. I've not looked up one thing. I've been just trying to find things on my own.
00:28:39
Speaker
It's super fun. There's an upgrade system where you can upgrade your health. You can upgrade like your sonar ability, your different animal abilities. It's a blast. hodge You're going to freaking love this game. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
00:28:52
Speaker
You are going I mean, I don't think you're going like it. Um, but Hodge, you're going to freaking like it. Why wouldn't I eat like it? Because you're, I, the story is, it's a good story for a Nintendo game, but it's not like, it's not like, I know you like your story based games and it's not like, like you didn't even play Astro Bot. And I, if you didn't play Astro Bot, I don't think you'd, you'd like this.
00:29:13
Speaker
Okay. Um, I thought Bonanza looks really fun and cool. Oh, it is. It's a blast to play. And this definitely could only run on Switch 2. This was on Switch 1. The Switch 1 would explode. Yeah, didn't they say they delayed it for that reason?
00:29:25
Speaker
Because it was supposed to be Switch? Yeah, there's no way this could run on a Switch. It's gorgeous. The music is phenomenal. You can collect records. And like you have like little outposts where you can like chill and relax. And you have a music player. You can listen all the different songs. There's like over 900 songs in the game.
00:29:40
Speaker
yeah It's super fun. I'm like really enjoying it. It's a blast.
00:29:47
Speaker
All right. ah Before you get into your next game, I have a question for you. Who the hell in Discord, who is this? Is this not the chick from Trails in the Sky first chapter?
00:29:58
Speaker
This Suikoden character looks exactly like the Trails in the Sky. Hang on, one second. One second. In the Discord I just put in there. No, she's not from Trails. she Does she not look like the girl from Trails in the Sky? this Oh, okay.
00:30:10
Speaker
Okay. Kind of, yes. I'm like, what is this, a collab? like She looks exactly like that person. Yeah, she looks almost exactly. yeah I was on the Sweet It In wiki and I saw her. Well, look at the picture of the the draft I just posted. She looks exactly like that girl.
00:30:27
Speaker
Except her hair's a little darker. Explain yourself. and um You didn't do anything. It's like the same girl. she does She's not Estelle. Estelle is from... No, she's not Estelle.
00:30:38
Speaker
Who is this character, do you know? For the listeners? So they can actually look at this up and know what we're talking about. I have no idea who that is. I couldn't tell you. Unfortunately, I don't either because it's there's no name. It's just a picture.
00:30:49
Speaker
Yeah. Well, it's not Estelle. Estelle Bright is a phenomenal Trails character, and you will find out when you play the remake. I'm excited to find out. You said I'm not going to like it. I hope you're wrong. I don't think you'll like it, but I hope i hope i'm wrong. All right.
00:31:02
Speaker
All right. I'm sorry I interrupted you, sir. ah Please continue with what you're playing. Alright, and next up, I am playing on my
Game Reviews: Wu-Chang Fallen Feathers
00:31:10
Speaker
PlayStation. First time I turned on my PlayStation in, like, almost, like, over two months because of the Switch 2. It's like, whoa, that's crazy.
00:31:17
Speaker
was in the mood for a little Souls-like game, so I decided to get Wu-Chang Fallen Feathers. Let me tell ya, this game is frickin' awesome. o It is a classic Souls game that is very punishing and very much like, you're dead? Alright, go back to your campfire.
00:31:36
Speaker
um It is so much more punishing than i would say any Souls game I've played so far. And I've played Dark Souls 1 through 3 and Demon's Souls and Bloodborne.
00:31:50
Speaker
Um, the combat is super fun. Uh, graphics are insane. The game looks gorgeous to look at the thing. I will say this, it made my base PS five run. Like it was getting super hot. and It was like screaming. Cause it just looks so good. And the game, the the game is just, there's so much going on on the screens.
00:32:09
Speaker
The combat is. Say that again. Sorry. You don't have a pro Sean. No, I don't. You should get a pro. It's awesome. right so The combat is is great.
00:32:21
Speaker
I'm really enjoying it. um So far, I've only played like four or five hours of it, but it's super fun so far. um This is definitely a game that is difficult.
00:32:32
Speaker
Like I said, it's probably the hardest Souls game I've played so far, and I've heard that from other people, but I'm going to continue at it. um Some of the boss design in this game is insane. like The way that they look, they look...
00:32:45
Speaker
way more distinct than souls bosses. That's one thing I will criticize a lot of souls bosses. They look a lot of it like a lot of them are look samey across the genre. Um, so far the bosses look super interesting. I'm really excited to see what keeps going on in this game, but I do want to shout out to Titan in, uh, locks discord.
00:33:01
Speaker
Um, he sent me a video on how to clean out the, and like the inner inside of your PS5. I clean out my PS5 every week, but like I actually, I took apart the whole thing and cleaned it all out and now it's running so much better.
00:33:14
Speaker
So shout out to Titan. I'm going to get a f Pro for GTA 6. The Pro is awesome. I like the Pro. I don't know if you any a pro you really need one, but it's cool though.
00:33:25
Speaker
I just like having the latest tech, you know, yeah with gaming.
00:33:30
Speaker
All right. ah You know, funny enough, Sean, this game is currently installed on my Xbox because it's on Game Pass and I am interested in playing it too. Although I think I might actually install it on PC and play it on there instead because I'll have more power because I've heard that this game struggles to run.
00:33:45
Speaker
as you mentioned, you know, almost overheating your PlayStation. So maybe it instead of playing it on Series X, maybe I should play it on my PC. Because I have a really good PC. I spent a lot of money. I might as well just download it on the PC.
00:33:57
Speaker
um But yeah, this game looks cool. I was interested in this game because graphically it looks beautiful. The combat looks good. And you have an attractive female lead, which is always a plus. So I've heard people refer this to as Gooner Souls.
00:34:11
Speaker
That's what I've heard people I wouldn't quite call it that. Yeah, I don't think. She's not looking like Eve from Stellar Blade or anything. um All right. Are you playing another game, Sean? I did. I played MEO the Smiling Man.
00:34:25
Speaker
This is a visual novel for... It's a first-party Nintendo Switch game. It's a visual novel. It's like a spiritual successor or a successor to the Famicom Detective Club games, which are older games. end up getting re-released on Switch.
00:34:38
Speaker
um This is a This is definitely a spooky game. It's like horror themed. I think Hodge would really like this game. And I would actually... I'm going to suggest it to you to play during your October, your Snoopy Fest. Snoopy?
00:34:52
Speaker
You mean spoopy? Spoopy, Snoopy, same thing. Same thing. What is it? MEO... MEO, the smiling man. This is wevery. um Not really. i mean i mean, it just looks like it because it's...
00:35:07
Speaker
like Japanese, but it's a virtual it's a visual novel adventure game. um it it is Obviously, it's set in Japan, but it is like a horror game. and Sorry, I'll drop i'll post a picture here in a second.
00:35:22
Speaker
It's a horror game. It's very scary, very spooky. The mystery is freaking awesome. That's all I'm to say, because if you talk about a lot of the game, it's going to spoil it. I highly suggest it for anyone, even if you're not into visual novels.
00:35:34
Speaker
It's a really good game, really good story. How long is it?
00:35:40
Speaker
I maybe like 20 hours not even 15 20 hours possibly this is what I was laughing at I put it in the discord yep it's Weabury okay this little picture it's like we're teenage girls you know have every every JRPG is teenagers it's not a JRPG so I know I'm sorry I'll shut up it's a visual novel and it's horror Jason huh yep it's awesome you're You're a detective. You're trying to discover the like what's going on. It's like a mystery.
00:36:13
Speaker
It's fun. okay yeah I mean, I'm not big into visual novels, but it looks like it looks like the type of story. like As someone who's a huge fan of Junji Ito, it looks like something that I would like for that reason. I think you would. I would highly suggest you play it.
00:36:31
Speaker
I will definitely keep it on the radar. All right. That is what I've been playing. if anyone Listen, I know these two haven't played it, but if anyone has played Emeo and they want to do a DLC with me, let me know because i wouldn't I would love to do a DLC on this game because it's really one of those games you want to go in not knowing anything really.
00:36:52
Speaker
Nice. Nice. um Yeah. I mean, that's something maybe I would play that during Halloween season if it was like on a subscription or free. But since it's Nintendo, right'm sure it's not.
00:37:04
Speaker
You just pay for the game. I don't like paying full price for games, Sean. I'm im um'm cheap as hell. I'm actually literally- I'm really- You're the reason why people are getting laid off in this industry. Probably, probably true, honestly. At least I'm not pirating games. At least I am paying for them. I'm just i'm just getting them on sale because i'm cheap.
00:37:21
Speaker
um Because I'm smart. I have such a long backlog. Why not just wait until the sale comes up and then play them? But, uh, what was i going to say? Damn it, you threw me off with that. Damn you, Sean.
00:37:33
Speaker
Uh, okay. I guess we'll move on because I lost my thought. All right. We have a write-in, don't we? Yes, we do. All right.
Gaming Culture and Personal Preferences
00:37:42
Speaker
Sean, you want to read our write-in?
00:37:44
Speaker
Yeah, I'll take it away. This is from William Iannis. I have no idea who this is. He randomly DMed me on Twitter and said he found the show. So he said, hey, guys, new listener. I've been going back and listening to the older episodes in order to catch up.
00:37:58
Speaker
Really enjoying myself. But I do have a question for all of you. for you all. Sean, why do you have to bring up your hate for Skyrim all the time? Hodge, why don't you ever talk about Spyro 3?
00:38:08
Speaker
Midnight, why don't you just admit you're a weeb? That's all he said. So I'll take it off first, because Skyrim's horrible. It's aged like milk. That's why.
00:38:20
Speaker
That's a lie. It hasn't aged like milk? No, it hasn't. It hasn't aged the best ever, but it's still a great game. It's still fun to play. You just have to be in the right mindset and you have to not have a bunch of bugs like Hodge had a bunch of bugs.
00:38:35
Speaker
You know, there's a lot of fraudery going on. I'm going to call this out, by the way, because I went back and I listened to episode three where we had Lockmord on. um or and episode four.
00:38:46
Speaker
And Hodge, I have to call you out a little bit because when I was listening to you talk about Skyrim on episode three and four of Games Over Plastic, you can go back and listen to it. You were very positive and very up about it. You were talking about how it was fun.
00:38:58
Speaker
You were having a great time. You said you were definitely going to stick with it. You said you were going to beat the main story. You said you weren't going to 100% the game, but you were going least beat the main story and do a little bit of side stuff. And then randomly you just dropped it and you're like, oh, it sucks.
00:39:11
Speaker
So I don't know. I don't understand like how it completely changed like that. um But initially, if you go back and listen, you were actually positive and you were like, oh, this is pretty cool. You were you're rocking around with like a two handed two handed axe or something.
00:39:22
Speaker
You said it was nice. You said it was cool how at the start of the game you get to choose which guard you go with. And that like minorly alters, like who you start your quest with and stuff in the in the first town. And yeah, I don't know. Like you you seemed to it like you were kind of into it. And now it sucks.
00:39:37
Speaker
And then again, And then it got lamer and lamer and more boring. and i fell I just don't think you gave it a chance. I think you were too busy and moved on. I have a question for you, Midnight. Have you ever 100%ed it? Skyrim?
00:39:49
Speaker
Yeah. No. All right. End of the question right there. All right. Moving on. Hodge. What are you talking about Spyro 3? actually Actually, yes. i'm going to I did the and what them um want the re seatipt um Because I did do every single quest in that, in the main game, but I didn't do the DLCs.
00:40:09
Speaker
um i There's actually, there's one DLC that I didn't even play. um I did play the Vampire DLC, but I think they came out with one after it and I didn't play it. so Vampire DLC. Yeah, it was pretty cool, actually. Yeah, it ass a vampire. If they ever remade, like, did a ground up remake of it, I probably would like it.
00:40:25
Speaker
But it's just so old and it's so dated. It's really hard to play now. Compared to the other games, compared to other games like that. This coming from the guy who's like, just go back and play the original Sky Trilogy. You don't have to wait for the remake. Yeah, because they're not, they, it's like a 16-bit game.
00:40:41
Speaker
Those games age like fine wine. Yeah, Skyrim's awesome. Stand down. All right. So that's all you have to say. The your reason why you hate Skyrim is because it sucks?
00:40:53
Speaker
Oh, it's age. I just, no, I told you, it's I said it's age terribly. It's age like milk. It's horrible to play now. And I don't have the nostalgia goggles blocking me from understanding that.
00:41:04
Speaker
Fair enough. Fair enough. I don't agree, but I respect your opinion. you've said Hang on. You said in other episodes that, yeah, it is a little clunky to play still in today's society. The combat's not the best. Yeah, it's super clunky.
00:41:17
Speaker
Well, the point of an Elder Scrolls game is not the combat. It never has been. But but i don't think I don't even think the writing's that good compared to like The Outer Worlds or Fallout New Vegas or fall even Fallout 4 or Fallout 3. The writing is so much better.
00:41:31
Speaker
yeah Fair enough. We'll move on. i don't want to argue about it. ah Differences of opinions with games is fair, and there's no way I'm going to convince you otherwise. so um Hajj, why don't you talk about Spyro 3?
00:41:44
Speaker
Because it's the worst of the trilogy. um I like it. it's It's a fun game. I don't like playing as the penguin or the kangaroo or hunter. You don't like Planet Sheila?
00:41:55
Speaker
No, I don't like any of those missions. yeah I do. The one that always sticks out to me is the even though it's like the main one that they show at the start of the game stuff is when you go to the that like Chinese New Year Ninja level. I love that. one Oh, yeah.
00:42:09
Speaker
But if it's a it's a good game. It's just it's my least favorite of the trilogy. It's Ripto's Rage is like a perfect game. ah The first one is good, but it was a first attempt. So it's a little little lackluster in the fact that doesn't have too many like features. It's just kind of a very, it's a first attempt at aspi a spyro game and it's good, but rip those rage perfected it. And then the third one, they tried adding too much to it. And then it kind of, it suffered a little bit for that. I, stop but I, I do love the game. I love that entire trilogy. It's just the weakest of the three. And I, yeah, I'm not, I'm not huge on Hunter and all the side characters and stuff. Those missions are like the sparks missions. and
00:42:48
Speaker
I was actually debating doing that for the mini games when we did Squad the when you play Sparks. But yeah, it's just I just don't like it as much as the other two games. It's my least favorite of the three. And that's why I don't talk about that much. But I definitely don't hate it. It's just my least favorite of the trilogy.
00:43:04
Speaker
it's definitely That's definitely like the popular opinion that Star 3 is the worst of the original trilogy. And I've actually learned that game was like in development like hell. during like that. Like they had to like turn around that game like really quickly. And that's why it's, if you go back to it, there's so many bugs compared to the other two games, like a ton of them.
00:43:21
Speaker
Oh, didn't know that. Yeah. But I agree with you. I think it's the weakest of the three. Yeah.
00:43:29
Speaker
Yep. Okay. That's what I think. All right. Anything else on there? Yeah. sorry You're a weeb. All right. So his question is, first of all, I want to say shout out to this guy, William Alanis. I love it.
00:43:47
Speaker
Sorry. I love the fact that you're a new listener. Thank you very much for your support. And this is a really good question, honestly. um So ah why don't you just admit you're a weeb? OK, so let's talk about this.
00:43:58
Speaker
Am I a weeb? This is something that I've been thinking about recently. I've been having an existential crisis about this because, um you know, i I make fun of weebs a lot in the past. And now I'm playing JRPGs more frequently, playing quite a bit of JRPGs.
00:44:15
Speaker
And I'm actually enjoying ah many of these JRPGs. um And I'm wanting to play more of them. Like I'm actually excited about playing several JRPGs that I have coming up and, you know, in my backlog and stuff.
00:44:28
Speaker
So I've been wondering, like, am I a weeb? What makes a weeb? Like, I've literally thought about this. Like, what makes a weeb? um Obviously, like, the the super lame weebs who, like, go to conventions and, like, have body pillows and, like, frickin' waifus and, like, statues. Like, those are, like, super weebs, and we should definitely make fun of them.
00:44:48
Speaker
But I feel like if you're someone who just enjoys a JRPG every now and then, i think that's acceptable. I think we're going to let you live. And that's where I consider myself. um Would I say that I'm a weeb?
00:44:59
Speaker
I don't think I would. I still probably would say that I'm not a weeb. I will say that I'm weeb adjacent. I said this in the beginning. If you go back and listen to episode one, episode two, episode four, whatever of Games Over Plastic, I said that I was weeb adjacent because I did watch some anime. You know, I've watched Naruto. I've watched Hunter Hunter. I've watched I've watched a fair amount of anime and I've enjoyed, that you know, the anime's.
00:45:20
Speaker
um And I have interest in some JRPGs and I've been playing a lot more them. So am I a weeb? um I would personally say I'm not a weeb because JRPGs are not my main thing and they'll probably never be my main thing. I always prefer Western games.
00:45:35
Speaker
If you look at my top 20, top 30, top 40, it's going to be heavily, heavily skewed towards the West. um but I am enjoying these JRPGs. I'm not going lie to you. Like I'm liking these JRPGs. They're good games and I am genuinely excited about playing more of them.
00:45:51
Speaker
So does that make me a weeb? Maybe a little bit. Maybe I'm a slight weeb. I'm going to say I'm weeb adjacent, slight weebish. um Here's what I'll do. I will make fun of weebs a little bit less.
00:46:02
Speaker
Okay. I'm still probably make fun of weebs a little bit, but I'm going to, I'm going to stand down a little bit. I'm going to make fun of you weebs a little bit less because these JRPGs have been pretty decent. I can't lie.
00:46:13
Speaker
I've got two things to say. All right. One, the statue comment. Look at Hodge's background now. You just called him a loser. But those are cool statues. I like Hodge's yeah. And second, you call people with statues lame. You have a freaking Bucky's mascot in your background right now, a giant stuffed animal designed for little kids.
00:46:32
Speaker
Hodge. All right. Sorry. Sean, everybody in America who has been to Bucky's loves Bucky's. Just because you haven't been there. i'm not Listen, you're the woman with the stuffed animal.
00:46:44
Speaker
Yeah. I have no problem with it. I'm just saying, I think it's a little hypocritical to call people out on statues when you've a Bucky stuffed animal in your background. The only statues I will say are unacceptable to have are the ones that are like the weeb women with the giant tits and doing the Asiago face or whatever the fuck it's called. The Gooner ones. Yeah. Yeah. Those that if you have those sta or like there's the one Tifa statue that came out where she's literally like bent over the buster sword, like presenting herself, basically that shit.
00:47:16
Speaker
You should be fired into the sun if you have those fucking statues. Those are unacceptable to have. Like, I don't, I've obviously nothing against nerd paraphernalia. I have plenty of it, but that kind of shit where it's, where it's the quote unquote, you need the jar thing that I, you, that, cause that's the thing is I don't think I'm a, I mean, I think I'm a weeb in the sense I do like anime. I do like manga or monga.
00:47:41
Speaker
but I'm called a normie by people who are weebs because I, my favorite ones are, you know full metal alchemist, death note, dragon ball Z. Those are the normie animes. So it's like, I am to, it's the same with like video games. I'm a casual gamer to hardcore who play every fucking game, but I am a fucking nerd to casual gamers. So like I'm in between in, you know, gaming and weebery. Like I like this stuff, but I don't, lit I don't dedicate my entire life to it in a creepy way. So it's like,
00:48:11
Speaker
the there are levels of weebery. It's not as simple as saying like, I like anime, so I'm a weeb because you're going to be called a casual by the actual weebs and you're not a weird pedophile about it. So like there's, there's levels to it. So I understand like, yeah, yeah you like JRPG, you play more JRPGs than me. So you're more weebery in that sense. But like, I read a lot of manga and I watch a lot of anime, so I'm more weebery than you in that. But so it's, it's a very, obviously the the whole thing of being,
00:48:40
Speaker
Denying you Weebery is just a joke and shit, but like there there's layers to this. It's not as it's not as black and white as as that. Well said. And I just do it all. There you go. Well, Sean is definitely a weeb.
00:48:53
Speaker
ah So Midnight, will you admit you're a weeb? I'm going to say no. ah But I will admit that I am weeb adjacent and I am edging. Pause. bow Big pause there. Edging closer to weebdom because I am i'm going to keep playing these JRPGs. I think the word you were looking for was inching.
00:49:11
Speaker
and yeah um I'm inching closer. And by the way, I think this cool edging term probably came out of the weeds, let's be honest. All right. That's sufficient answer right there. Thank you, William.
00:49:25
Speaker
Thank you, William. And with that said, boys, we are going to go ahead and transition right back to Sean. Let's get into our main topic of discussion, shall we? Let's do it. Let's do it.
Iconic Games by Console Era: 1985-2004
00:49:36
Speaker
All right. So I want to thank Hodge for coming up with this topic.
00:49:41
Speaker
gathered all the game consoles, like most of the game consoles that came out between 1985 and 2004. I left out the Atari 7800 because that's but that's like the worst Atari, supposedly.
00:49:53
Speaker
I left out all these like these miniature handhelds. I left out all those. I have pretty much the... No, yeah no Tomagachi, I'm sorry. damn But we are going to go through and we're going to go in chronological order and we're just going to tell the audience what game is like iconic to us. When we think of that console, what game immediately comes to mind? So not necessarily our favorite game, but not necessarily like this is the greatest game of all time or this is the game that everyone thinks of. It's the game that comes to mind when we think of the console.
00:50:24
Speaker
Now, could that be the game everyone thinks of? It might be. Could it not be? It might not be. You will find out, but we are going to start in the year. oh these are U.S. releases, by the way, U.S. releases.
00:50:35
Speaker
So we're going start in the year 1985 with with the Nintendo Entertainment System, the NES.
00:50:46
Speaker
And we're going to start out with Hodge. So Hodge, think of the n NES. What comes to mind here for you? You would think a man like me would say Kirby's Adventureland because you would think.
00:50:57
Speaker
But and it's going to be a very generic answer. But in all honesty, it's Super Mario Brothers. The OG, you start off, there's a Goomba, you hit the question mark. Like that moment in in video games is like just the iconic opening of a game. like And so when I think of and n NES, even though I love games like Duck Hunt and Kirby and ah don' a bunch of other games like Sightbike,
00:51:21
Speaker
And shit like that. Like I loved all those games. Legend of Zelda. Like they're great games, but the game I think about is Super Mario Bros. It's just the OG. I love all three of them. They're all great. But the first one is just that is such an iconic thing in just all of video games. World 1-1. Like it's starting like it's just it's like the the opening you think of when you think of like video games. So it's like, yeah. So Super Mario Bros. That's my and NES game that I just immediately think of when I think of this console.
00:51:50
Speaker
I'm gonna hop right off of that and tell you... Mine is Super Mario Bros. 3. I went back and forth between Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3. This is a really difficult choice for me. But when I think of it, I think of Mario Bros. 3. That might be because of my age. I did play Mario Bros. 3 first.
00:52:06
Speaker
That was a game that... Growing up, obviously I was born in 96, but growing up, we still played the and NES. And that was the game that was probably played the most in the house just because I would play it. My sister would play it. It's my dad's favorite game of all time. Well, one of his favorite games of all time.
00:52:20
Speaker
um So I would um see it all the time. i um Yeah, I would see it all the time. And yeah, I really um like the game. I think it's iconic. and Obviously, most people think it's like one of the greatest games of all time.
00:52:35
Speaker
So, yeah, I would say Super Mario Bros. 3, but I totally get where you're coming from with the original Super Mario Bros. um Both are fantastic matches. Again, personally, yeah. So there we go.
00:52:47
Speaker
There we go. right. I'm up next. ah Hang on one second. One second. I don't think we need to write everyone's name down because we have the order, guess. Oh, that's fair. i already thought for graphics For graphics purposes, that's why i was doing that.
00:53:01
Speaker
I even think we need to put our names next to the graphics. I think we can just... but the game No, just for when I make the graphics, I'll see. I know, but even then you just put the games up as we go. Like it's get the same order every time.
00:53:13
Speaker
Yeah, that's fine. Well, whatever you want to do, Hodge, you're the master of graphics. All right. I will go ahead and break this tie right now, boys. so Sean, you said you picked Super Mario's three and you think it's you think it's because of age related.
00:53:26
Speaker
Well, I'm here to tell you with my age related, my age related. well I'm here to tell you it's not age-related because I am the resident old man of this podcast. And I, too, Sean, picked Super Mario Bros. 3 as the most iconic game from the n NES because it's by far the best game on the n NES, in my opinion. It's vastly superior to the first Super Mario Bros.
00:53:45
Speaker
And it is super iconic. What's more iconic than that cover of him there, you know, with the little flying raccoon suit or whatever? Freaking awesome, dude. That game... Whatever. and That game is so awesome, dude. What an amazing platformer. Back in the peak of platformers. 2Ds.
00:54:02
Speaker
2D, of course. um I love that game. i for I beat that game. I beat all of them. Actually, i don't think I beat 2. 2 was weird. ah But 1 and 3, I definitely beat. And yeah, 3 was the superior Mario Brothers in every way.
00:54:14
Speaker
And I loved it. So that's my pick as well. Super Mario Brothers 3. But shout out to the first game. Obviously, it started, you know, that... the modern Mario trend that we know of basically saved gaming, basically saved gaming.
00:54:27
Speaker
It did save gaming, the and NES and Mario save gaming. also just, I love the third one purely because then it becomes like that stage where you like exit stage, right at the end of each level and stuff like that. Like it's such, it's such a great art style. It's just, it is. like Like I said, it's just that the first one is just so iconic to me.
00:54:44
Speaker
They took everything they learned from, the other games and kind of just perfected it. It's iconic. Both of them. I mean, there's no really wrong answer for the, you know, you're picking any of the Mario games really. Nah, two the wrong answer.
00:54:57
Speaker
All right. So we're going to 1986, one year later, we got a console that many people like often forget about. And that is the Sega Master System. Not to be confused with the Sega Genesis, but this is the Sega Master System.
00:55:12
Speaker
So, Hodge, what do you think when you think of the Sega Master System? And I hope you don't say Sonic because i have a little thing to tell you about that. Well, actually, I am going to say Sonic because i just when I think of i never had a master system or anything. ah But when I think of it, I think of those the covers of the games where it was like the white grid paper looking thing.
00:55:37
Speaker
And I always think of the Sonic where he's sitting there with his finger up on that background. And that's really the only reason because I've never played a master system. I've never owned one. Don't even know what games really are on it. But that's the one that I think of.
00:55:50
Speaker
I'm sure you have some little thing about it, but I'm still going with it just because i just think of that where he's sitting there with his finger up on that white background with the grid. Like that's just what I think of because I don't know anything about this system, if I'm being honest.
00:56:04
Speaker
So Sonic the Hedgehog actually came out on the Genesis first, and it was actually like ah it wass like a down port, a D port to the Master which is funny. know. um think it makes sense. I mean, it makes sense. Like I said, I just, these older 80s systems, with a few exceptions, of course, are systems I never owned, I never played. And so when I think of the system, I think of like, I can kind of imagine the box art kind of thing. That's really all I have with these. And so that's what I think of when I think of the Master System.
00:56:33
Speaker
It's just the Sonic with that white background. um There's nothing wrong with that answer. I was just saying. I get what you're saying, but yeah that's just what I think of. yeah For me, i have a little JRPG that really popularized um this genre um before Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and that is Phantasy Star.
00:56:56
Speaker
This is an incredibly popular um franchise that has been you know kind of left behind, but it was incredibly popular in the 90s, especially Phantasy Star Online, and this what got it started. and This was like a really ahead-of-its-time JRPG.
00:57:10
Speaker
We all know as big of a Final Fantasy fan I am, but we can I think we get anyone who's played it can admit the first games are very shallow. This was not Shallow. This came out around the same time as the first one. It had like a full drawn out story. and This was a unique Master System game.
00:57:27
Speaker
ah So much so that when it was it was released on the Virtual Console back in the week, they had Master System games. I bought it and fell in love with it. It was awesome. yeah I'm going go with Phantasy Star. and It's a really good um classic JRPG. Not long, but a lot more in-depth than the original Final Fantasy, which is what it was competing with at the time.
00:57:46
Speaker
Okay, good pick. Good pick. Obviously, I've never played Phantasy Star, but I have heard of it. um And funny enough, I've actually recently been getting advertisements on the algorithm on social media for Phantasy Star Online New Genesis because apparently they're having collabs with animes that I've seen before.
00:58:05
Speaker
So I'm getting ads. like ah course Of course, as you know, I'm not a weep. But I did i did play... ah i don't know if you guys watch the anime ah My Hero. No, if not My Hero. academia Sorry. Railgun.
00:58:19
Speaker
Railgun and Index. A certain magical index and a certain scientific railgun. ah Those are two very good animes, actually. ah but They have a crossover in that Phantasy Star game. So I've been seeing like Mikasa or whatever from Misaka, I think is her name, actually, from Railgun is in Phantasy Star Online. So I'm getting ads for that. But anyway, completely random.
00:58:40
Speaker
ah Good pick, Sean. Good pick. My pick here for this shout out to Lord Cognito, Lord Shinobi, because I am going to pick Shinobi for the master system. Now I never owned the master system either. I don't know anyone who did in the States.
00:58:56
Speaker
I'm sure some people did, but I didn't. um But yeah, Shinobi was on the master system. According to Google, I've seen video, I've seen proof of it. And this is a game that I did play back in the day in arcades. This was an arcade game.
00:59:11
Speaker
So I played some Shinobi in arcades. It also was on the n NES, I'm pretty sure. And I dabbled a little bit into it on that. I've never been like a massive Shinobi fan. I can't say that I've like beaten all the games, um but I've played a little Shinobi and it was on the master system and shout out to cog.
00:59:25
Speaker
Dude. That game complete inbox for the Master System is $1,000. Ooh! I'm not surprised, honestly. But the Genesis version complete inbox is only $2.50. Probably because there's a lot more made and sold. Yeah, definitely. That's that's insane.
00:59:40
Speaker
But yeah, so that was on Master System. None of us have owned it. I've never owned a Sega console, so... But moving 1989, we got the Game Boy. And we are including Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color, just because this console lasted for freaking ever, basically 12 years. Yeah.
00:59:58
Speaker
um So, Hodge, I think I know what you're going to pick, but what's your iconic Game Boy game? You are very obvious to know what I was going to pick, and that is, i mean, technically it's three games, but they're all basically the same. Pokemon, red, blue, and yellow.
01:00:13
Speaker
um But yellow is the one that I always loved the most. Red is my second favorite, and blue, I was just never a water Pokemon type, so that's why I didn't do that, even though... The artwork of the fat Pikachu, the Charizard, the Blastoise are just so iconic for those covers. I love all three.
01:00:29
Speaker
But yeah I played mostly yellow with a little bit of red here or there. I played blue just because we did have it, but obviously the only difference between red and blue was... and One you can catch Electabuzz and one you can't. So basically, was not but yeah there's there's a couple other Pokemon. But yeah, that's basically the main difference. But yeah, the Pokemon games obviously is the start of a series that is still prevalent today.
01:00:53
Speaker
ah These games were I played them obsessively on these on Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Color when I got one. And yeah, it's just Pokemon.
01:01:03
Speaker
There are some favorite games of all time. ah These OGs. so And yeah. and It's just what I think of when I think of Game Boy. I mean, i like I said, I still have, for the listeners, I still have my Pokemon Yellow in my OG Game Boy Color. I own it still. So, yeah, that's just what I think of, for sure.
01:01:19
Speaker
It's Pokemon, Red, Blue, and Yellow. And I have the same exact answer, Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. Even though I prefer um ah different Pokemon games than this, and I played Gold, Silver, Crystal first, then I went back and played red yellow Red, Blue, and Yellow. These are iconic when you think of the Game Boy. They gave the Game Boy a whole second life. The Game Boy was basically dead before this game came out.
01:01:42
Speaker
Nintendo wasn't making really games for it anymore. um They were like, we don't know what we're going do with this. They almost ditched the handheld market because they they just didn't know how to advance it beyond the Game Boy. And it was basically just filled with third-party trash. And then they released Pokemon and just took off.
01:01:58
Speaker
And that's when it got its like whole second life. And that's how like the Game Boy Color came into existence. We need to make and a Game Boy Color game. um with color and they they didn't even think pokemon was going to be a big hit they really didn't and then it just took off out of nowhere so um it's definitely for me pokemon just because it basically provided an extra you know like five six years to the console's life cycle which is insane to think about if you had to choose which one of the three though if had to choose which one of the three uh probably yellow yellow yeah um i like i mean i never like yellow was this is the only mainline game i didn't like i had pokemon yellow but like my sister had red but i never had blue after that like every time a pokemon game would come out she'd get one version i'd get the other version and then we'd pretty much always end up getting the third version like both of us would but this is the only one where i didn't have like pokemon blue or pokemon red so i'd probably say yellow
01:02:54
Speaker
I would also say yellow. That Pikachu is adorable and iconic as hell. And the the sprite work in Pokemon Yellow, I think, is better than in Red and Blue. Yeah, well, added color, which made it nicer, too.
01:03:07
Speaker
Well, even without the color, I think just the sprite work is better. like They change a lot of like what the Pokemon look like. All right. Midnight, you're up. You want to how sheltered I am? I didn't even know that Pokemon existed. I had never even heard of it until the first movie came out in theaters. ah Because a friend of mine was like, oh, we go see this Pokemon movie.
01:03:25
Speaker
And I'm like, what the hell is Pokemon? And we went and saw the movie and it was decent. I had no idea what the hell was going on. i didn't know what any of these characters are or monsters were, but I still enjoyed the movie. um Yeah.
01:03:37
Speaker
So my very first thought when I thought of the Game Boy was Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow because of Hodge, but that's not what I picked so because the most iconic game for the Game Boy is by far Tetris.
01:03:51
Speaker
Tetris is one of the most iconic video games of all time. I think it's probably the number one selling game of all time. Everybody knows Tetris. Everyone loves Tetris. Well, most people. And Tetris is awesome. I'm not the best at it. and I'm not that good at it, but I have played quite a bit.
01:04:05
Speaker
ah It's amazing when you see people who are really good at Tetris playing. like It's just mesmerizing to watch how they just like... Dude, it's crazy. like these Some of these people are like robots. But yeah, shout out to Tetris, the most iconic video game of all time.
01:04:17
Speaker
um I almost went Pokemon Yellow for you, Hodge. But I was like, man, Tetris was on the Game Boy. You gotta pick Tetris. It was a launch game and it really sold the console. Yeah, and it was awesome. Alright. Moving on. It's like the only perfect video game.
01:04:32
Speaker
Yeah, it's really good. Alright, moving on. Same year, we got our first 16-bit console, the Sega Genesis, which even though it was released in 89, it kind of got re-released in 91 when Sonic came out.
01:04:46
Speaker
It kind was failing before that. So, Hodge, 89, Sega Genesis. What do you got, bud? So this is probably a game that neither of you have ever even heard of, but this is the game I think of.
01:04:59
Speaker
It's when I think of Sega Genesis, it is not Sonic the Hedgehog, even though that is the obvious pick, which i don't know if not to shit on it, if either of you picked it, but mine is actually X-Men 2 Clone Wars.
01:05:13
Speaker
uh this game i remember prefer just because it's one of those side scroll and beat them up x-men games which is just awesome i love those games but the second one it was iconic in a way in a sense that when you started the game there was no menu or anything it just dropped you into the game like as you turn it on and the character was random every time you could be wolverine nightcrawler gambit uh some other beast and others but Me and my brother, we both had the characters we wanted to play as. So we would just keep hitting reset until it was the characters that we wanted to play as because it there was no menu or anything. It just, you turn it on and you dropped into the first level. So we would just sit there hitting reset every time, just seeing who would drop in until we finally got the characters who we wanted to play as.
01:05:57
Speaker
And so i just remember hours and hours and hours and hours playing this with my brothers. And it, yeah, I just love, love this game. X-Men 2 Clone Wars.
01:06:08
Speaker
Yeah, I love that. Honorable mention, the Jurassic Park game. I love that game as well on Sega Genesis. That game was awesome. could play as Alan Grant or a Velociraptor. It was awesome. So you owned a Genesis or no? hush Yeah. Genesis was the first console we actually ever had. We got the and NES down the road.
01:06:25
Speaker
So the Genesis was my first console. Nice. Yeah, I had one, too. It was it was a great console. Yeah. I remember I told, I convinced my dad to let me get the ah Sega Genesis because I told him it played CDs because I thought it did.
01:06:40
Speaker
it looked like It looked like it did, you know, like it's got the circle thing. like all kind of um And the Sega CD was a thing, but I didn't realize it was a separate attachment. I'm like, oh, it plays CDs now. Let's get this. and It totally didn't play CDs unless you had the attachment.
01:06:56
Speaker
Yeah, Sean. right For me, I was on with Sonic the Hedgehog. I never owned a Genesis. I've actually never even played it, never held a controller. But like I said earlier, Sonic the Hedgehog revived the console. It was basically dead. They had to they basically marketed it as a re-release, almost like a a new release console with Sonic. And it ah kind of saved Sega until you know a decade later when they kind of went under.
01:07:20
Speaker
But it, well, they're probably the most prolific they've been now, being a third party and everything they've done. But during their main console, it saved them. It it gave them life. So yeah, i'd had one with Sonic the Hedgehog, even though I hate Sonic. But can't i can't it is I can't say he's iconic. yeah Midnight, would you go with?
01:07:40
Speaker
Midnight, let me guess. Can I guess? Yeah. Mortal Kombat. Mortal Kombat. No, but that would have been a great pick. Actually, i didn't really think of that. i ah But i still I'm going to stick with my guns, though. I'm i'm with you, Sean.
01:07:53
Speaker
Shout out to RK128, friend of the show, Lord Sonic. I also picked Sonic the Hedgehog. It's iconic as hell. I really enjoyed this first game, too. It was a lot of fun playing as the blue blur, zipping through those tracks, getting all the rings, ah fighting Dr. Robotnik and stuff.
01:08:09
Speaker
I still kind of remember the song, like... d d d do green i guy i will say like that That's one thing I'll say about Sonic. The music in every Sonic game slaps.
01:08:21
Speaker
So good. yeah so I actually ah i don't think I've seen the movies. Pretty sure I haven't seen any of the movies. Should i see the movies? Are they good? First one's good. Second one's alright. Third one's between the two. But the first one's the best one, I think.
01:08:33
Speaker
and okay i I might have to check those out. Yeah, shout out to Sonic. That was my pick. My another honorable mention actually was it wasn't I wasn't going to pick Sonic. I was going pick Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I love that one. i just remember the opening.
01:08:45
Speaker
You have tail ah Tails flying in on his airplane and Sonic's riding on it and he jumps off. And he so he falls off screen and then he comes back as Super Sonic, which is the golden one flying over the ocean.
01:08:57
Speaker
And then you get onto the island, Knuckles knocks you over, and you drop all the gems, then Knuckles runs away with the gems, and that's how the game starts. And I just remember that opening like so so well. So Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was my favorite of the Sonic games on Genesis. But yeah, obviously the first one that is iconic of yeah Green Hill Zone right at the start.
01:09:17
Speaker
Yeah, it's a great game. Great choice, though. I love how like if you didn't play for a while, he would start to get kind of mad and like start shaking his foot. Yeah, he would he would tap his foot and he'd check his watch and he'd just look at it. Yeah, it was yeah that was pretty fun. Yeah.
01:09:29
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Next up, we have, in 1990, a year later, the TurboGrafx-16. Now, Paj, you ever played this? No.
01:09:40
Speaker
Really? No. Never even seen this console before. i had I had to look it up just to see what it looked like. But the one game I do know that was on it, which is the game I'm going to go with, is Galaga.
01:09:53
Speaker
Just because i know that name. That's literally the only reason I know the name Galaga. And I know it's a spaceship shooter, you know, 8-bit basically. and don't know if it's 8 or 16-bit. But, but ah yeah, it's that's the only game i can ever think of when I think of ah this console is because I know it was Galaga for the... meo are the ah uh yeah the turbo or the turbo graphics not new geo uh yeah so that's that's all i think of is is galaga so i have nothing else to add i just know of that game and that's what i'm going with so what i will say about the turbo graphics 16 is that in 1990 this launched for 700 in 1990 oh my god it's like a million dollars today i know it's insane um
01:10:38
Speaker
I have played it once at a PAX. I played it. And the game that I always think of, i've I've known about this game for a while, is Bonk's Adventure. This is like their version of...
01:10:51
Speaker
Sonic or their version of Mario. That's like a 2D platformer. um It's actually got sequels and people actually, this is like considered one of the best games for the console. um I played through a couple levels. It controls pretty well. It actually feels good to play.
01:11:06
Speaker
The only thing I will say is the, like, considering this is like 1990 comparing this to mario 3 feel like this is like much closer to like mario 1 than mario 3 yet it's the same year so it's like oh that's not good and it's supposed to be 16-bit it's like oh what are you doing here and your 700 console oh yeah bonks adventure For those curious, that's $1,700 plus dollars today. Jesus. For a console. What is that? and have An Apple console? Crazy games, yeah.
01:11:41
Speaker
Yeah, where's the Pippin? What year did that come out? The Apple Pippin. um Okay. Bonk's Adventure. Turbo graphics 16. So for me, I'm completely frauding on this because I didn't have this console.
01:11:55
Speaker
I should have said Galaga, but I didn't realize that even was on it because I did play Galaga on the NES. It was Galaga 90. Sorry. It was a, it wasn't like, I think there's different ones. I don't know. It was a 16 bit version.
01:12:07
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. agree Galaga is awesome. I used to play that back in the day. Fun game. Classic. But what I went with on this one is a game that I haven't even played, but it is a game that I've definitely heard of and I think everyone's heard of and that's Bomberman.
01:12:21
Speaker
Bomberman is a very well known game that I personally haven't played, but because it existed on the console that I didn't own, I picked it. There we go. Shout out to Bomberman. Have you guys played Bomberman ever?
01:12:32
Speaker
yeah ah Yeah, I've played a ton Bomberman. I love that. It's such a fun, fun game. like Yeah, I had the party version on PS1, like the party game, and it was super fun.
01:12:43
Speaker
used play it all the time. Yeah, yeah i don't I don't think I've ever played it, but when I saw that that was there, it's like such an iconic name that I've heard of. i was I'll just pick that.
01:12:54
Speaker
Alright, so next up we have another console that came out in 1990. um At another egregious price of, this came out at $600 in 1990.
01:13:05
Speaker
Like, what are they thinking? theyre like What were they thinking? don't know. This is the Neo Geo. The Neo Geo, which i definitely failed as a console.
01:13:15
Speaker
So, Hollad, you're up. Neo Geo. The only game I've heard of that was on the Neo Geo is Metal Slug, so I'm going there. this is actually i This is definitely an iconic game. for yeah like that's that's Yeah, that's the one. night cause I looked up i like just googled Neo Geo games and the first one was Metal Slug. I'm like, oh, I know that one. I didn't know that's what this was on.
01:13:33
Speaker
I've heard of Metal Slug and I know what it is. so I just went with that. cause yeah i don't In terms of connecting it to this console, no idea, but I've heard of Metal or metal Slug. so but yeah that That game actually started on this console and it obviously was a very popular um series also naughty dog developed their first game ever was for the neo geo which is funny to think yeah what game was it couldn't tell you i just know they started with neo geo um so you want the metal slug i went with bum bum
01:14:09
Speaker
Road Rage. Road Rage. And this is an iconic game in the fact that it started that whole, like, drive a car and just drive through things and destroy things and, like, run away from police and break the law. Kind of like a very GTA-lite kind of game.
01:14:28
Speaker
That's why I went with it. I've never played it, but I was reading about it, and it's supposed to be, like, one of the best games on three I mean, Neo Geo. Wow. See, look at these consoles all blended together.
01:14:40
Speaker
They do. The later year is just going to be so much easier for us. Yeah. Yeah. After this, I'd say it probably gets a little... After, like, 93, it kind of gets a little easier. Yeah. Yeah.
01:14:51
Speaker
All right. Midnight? All right, so this is, unsurprisingly, another console that I also didn't own, because who would? um But I will say that this game actually looked like it had pretty it actually looks like a nice console. I like the controller with the little stick and the four buttons, and the graphics actually on these games look pretty good. So they're charging $600, which is crazy, but at least it actually looks like pretty powerful and pretty good for the time, right?
01:15:16
Speaker
ah But I went with Metal Slug 3 as well because I also Googled it and this came up. And met funny enough, I actually have a Metal Slug game in Metal Slug Tactics, I think.
01:15:27
Speaker
It's currently in my Steam wish list right now. ah It's a game that I want to play at some point. I'm waiting on a sale because it's me. You know how I do. ah But Metal Slug Tactics has a very positive 88 on Steam. It looks awesome.
01:15:39
Speaker
So shout out to Metal Slug. That's what I picked. right. Nice. All right, so we're going to move on to 1991. We have the Sega Game Gear. That's right, the Sega Game Gear.
01:15:56
Speaker
Hodge, you're up. Yeah, I never had this one either, so it was one I had to kind of look it up, and I saw that there was a Sonic the Hedgehog game it, so I rolled with Sonic the Hedgehog for Game Gear. cause i just Which is ah it's actually funny because these they were Sonic games, but they were actually different than the console versions.
01:16:13
Speaker
Oh, really? I saw that the graphics were different. I looked it up, and the graphics were very, very 8-bit looking compared to the originals.
01:16:24
Speaker
Yeah. Dude, but the Game Gear was ahead of its time, man. That color screen before the Game Gear color. It also took like eight batteries. Oh, yeah. That thing had a horrible battery life. But, man, it was cool, though.
01:16:35
Speaker
right Alright, so you did Sonic the Hedgehog. For me, for the game gear, I went with Gunstar Heroes. Mainly because this was a shoot-em-up run-and-gun game. and those are not You could not run that on a Game Boy with the way it looked in the graphics.
01:16:53
Speaker
And how many like pixels were on screen. And I guess people like freaked out about it. Never played it. But yeah, I went with it i Gunstar Heroes. Okay.
01:17:04
Speaker
I've never even heard of that. I also went with Sonic Triple Trouble just because I saw there was a Sonic game on the handheld. I didn't have a Game Gear. ah But, you know, Sonic, you can't go wrong. There we go.
01:17:15
Speaker
Yeah, especially this was the 90s when Sonic was like Sega. Like, that was their mascot was Sonic, so. Hell yeah. That makes sense. He was outside the Nintendo headquarters. Or, right, was that Crash Bandicoot? That was Crash Bandicoot. He would have been, though. He would have been. He was sassy.
01:17:32
Speaker
Yeah, he would have. sega does genesis does what nintendo don't
01:17:38
Speaker
yeah sell horribly uh oh yeah anyway all right moving on to a much better console um the super nintendo 1992 odge what'd with
01:17:55
Speaker
odds would you go with This was it was actually tough between two that pop into my mind immediately. So I'm going to go with ah Donkey Kong Country in honor of my cousin, who's a huge Donkey Kong Country fan.
01:18:09
Speaker
Otherwise, it would have been this Mickey's. Well, the reason I didn't go with it either is can't remember the name. There's the Mickey at the circus game where you use vacuums to suck up the enemies and stuff. It was actually a very fun platformer. Like I would suggest looking it up. It's awesome.
01:18:24
Speaker
but i But yeah, I'm going to go Donkey Kong Country. The trilogy is so great, but obviously I'll just go with the first one just because I'm thinking of the series as a whole because they all kind of blended together for me. But ah yeah, the Donkey Kong Country games are what I think of immediately when I think of SNES. So that's what I'm rolling with.
01:18:44
Speaker
All right. It's a great pick right there. It's a great pick. I like it. I went pretty simple. I went Super Mario World. This is my favorite 2D Mario game of all time.
01:18:56
Speaker
I think it's iconic for the Super Nintendo. It was a launch game. This is like that the peak of like... Well, not even the peak, but this is like the... When Mario got to the top and just never gave it up. It's like the top of the Mario.
01:19:08
Speaker
um This game is freaking amazing. It gave us that wicked nice overworld. The awesome power-ups with the cape. um Like, optional levels. Secret passages out of levels. It's just super... Like, I love this game.
01:19:23
Speaker
ah The art style is... gorgeous to look at to this day. i had to go with Super Mario World. It's iconic and it's the game I think of. Even though it is not my favorite game on Super Nintendo, it is um the most iconic game to me on Super Nintendo. When I think of it, I immediately think Super Mario World running through um all those different worlds, the boo houses, the castles, riding on Yoshi, running up pipes with a cape on and doing all that. it Super Mario World.
01:19:51
Speaker
Nice. I posted a picture of the, it's called the great circus mystery starring Mickey and Minnie. That's what the interesting the game was called. It was awesome. I love that game so much, but anyway, midnight.
01:20:03
Speaker
All right. Yeah. The super Nintendo had a lot of great games. It was our number one console um for Nintendo. I also, Sean, went with Super Mario World because it is just so iconic.
01:20:15
Speaker
It's a masterpiece. This game's a 10 out of 10. um I played the hell out of this game. Love the overworld. Love the platforming, the tight platforming. Loved riding around on Yoshi and eating stuff.
01:20:25
Speaker
um Awesome experience. Played this a lot with my aunt, too. Used to go over to her house, and she was a gamer, too. And we would but we would just pass the controller back and forth. Like, as soon as you die, you pass that controller off, and then it's her turn. um Shout out to Super Mario World. ah they It was hard for them to top Mario 3 because Mario 3 was so amazing, but they did it.
01:20:43
Speaker
This one was even a little better. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. All right. One of the best consoles ever. And now on to one of the worst consoles ever, the 3DO.
01:20:55
Speaker
Jesus, the freaking 3DO. Anasonic 3DO. And this is another console that released at $700. $700. Yeah, don't know what they're doing. and Insane. and I don't know. But Hodge, you're up for the 3DO. I know you own this one.
01:21:08
Speaker
Yeah, my favorite one of all time. Nope, this is just another one that when I looked it up, I just went with a game that has iconic box art that I enjoyed at the time. And i actually still need to buy the room master that came out recently. And that is Gex.
01:21:21
Speaker
i Yeah, Gex. Yeah, I loved Gex. I loved it. I i played it on PlayStation back in the day, which we'll be getting to in a bit, which that's not my choice for that console.
01:21:32
Speaker
But when i when I was looking up games for this one, that that was the first one that popped up that I was just like, oh, man, I love that game growing up. So that's what I'm rolling with for this one. So Gex the Gecko, ah he's the man.
01:21:44
Speaker
That's what i'm rolling with fur for this. Love that pick. forgot that it originated on 3DO. I went with something a little different. This is more known for the Sega CD, but this is actually released for the first six months of its life.
01:21:59
Speaker
but first ever ah limited console exclusive, I want to say, I guess. I went with Night Trap. Do you guys remember this game, Night Trap? Wasn't this one that was like super controversial?
01:22:10
Speaker
Yeah, super controversial. on It was like the the girls are having to sleep over and there's murderer in the house, I think. Yeah. Yeah, and this release, this was a console exclusive for like six months, a limited exclusive for 3DO.
01:22:22
Speaker
Someone with Night Trap. Oh my god. I'm pretty sure it got a re-release. I think they re-released it recently for like, yeah, I see right here. Night Trap 25th Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch.
01:22:35
Speaker
Ha! For the Switch, nice. Yep, so went with Night Trap. yeah Oh man, I forgot about Night Trap. This game was very controversial. Yeah.
01:22:46
Speaker
I don't know why. Midnight, you're up. People are prudes. Alright, so for this one here, i um obviously I didn't own a 3DO, but I actually did play 3DO. I don't remember where it was at, but me and my friends, we were somewhere, there was a 3DO, and we played it, and it was okay.
01:23:03
Speaker
But... The game that I'm going to pick is a game that actually I played a ton on the Sega Genesis, not the 3DO, and that is Road Rash. Road Rash is an awesome game. You you ride around on a motorcycle, um but you get to like beat people up. like You can kick them and knock them off their motorcycle. You can hit them with like a chain and knock them off the motorcycle. So it's like a combat racing game.
01:23:25
Speaker
I played a ton of it on the Genesis, and it was actually really fun. So shout out to Road Rash for the three do my pick. Nice. All right. Next up, we got probably our one of our last like weird... cal Second or last weird console. We got the Sega Saturn.
01:23:43
Speaker
ah Sega's attempt at... you know, the PlayStation and their n sixty four sadly it failed. um So Hodge, what do you think of when you think of the Sega Saturn? Without a doubt, didn't even have to ponder this for more than a second. Sonic R. It's a Sonic. Oh, Sonic Racing.
01:24:00
Speaker
Yeah, it was awesome. I loved this game so much. And you didn't have to be in a car, Sonic, because you don't have to be in a car to run. ah But I remember...
01:24:11
Speaker
Near the end, you'd have to fight. You'd have to race against Robo Sonic, who is insanely hard. And then once you unlock him, you're able to eventually unlock Super Sonic, who is basically a cheat code like you could not lose when you played a Super Sonic. It was you were just flew through the levels. So, ah yeah, Sonic r It's honestly one of my favorite racing games of all time. I'm sure it aged like milk. I'm sure it's horrible to play now, but at the time, loved this game so much. So, yeah, so Sega Saturn.
01:24:39
Speaker
I did own this console. And i don't even remember any other games I own for it because all I ever think of is Sonic R when I think of this console. So yeah, that's what I'm rolling with.
01:24:51
Speaker
all right interesting i went with panzer dragoon saga now for those who don't know ah the saturn even though it failed has ton of like jrpgs that are like considered some of the best a lot of them didn't release here but panzer dragoon saga is like the third game in this like trillion it's like um this like series of Panzer Dragoon games that they're supposed to be ah really good. This is, ah this is actually, um it's like a rail shooter slash JRPG. it's It's weird. They have like different aspects to it.
01:25:27
Speaker
um But I always wanted to play them. and They did make a remake of the first one, which is a Genesis game. So I do want to get to it eventually, but yeah, Panzer Dragoon Saga.
01:25:37
Speaker
Okay. Nice. so I did not play that. I see if you want to get a Sega Saturn system, it's on Amazon right now for only $269. How about that? All right. That's great.
01:25:48
Speaker
Yeah, I might buy that. No, I'm not buying that. Okay, so I will say this. I owned a Sega Saturn. I think that the logo for the Sega Saturn is awesome. I think it's freaking incredible.
01:25:58
Speaker
ah Hodge, you're the graphics designer. what do you think about the Sega Saturn? You like that blue circle with the little S that goes around it and stuff? I just think it's pretty cool. I like what they did with it. Oh, I mean, it's very 90s and has it looks like a very 90s graphic. But as an like it's like how like how the PlayStation logo, it's a 90s thing, but they can modernize it by changing its colors and all that kind of stuff.
01:26:22
Speaker
So Sega Saturn, I think if you did modernize this logo, it could look pretty good. But looking at the old one, that's very ninety s It just screams 90s. But yeah, it was a cool it's definitely a cool logo. I like it.
01:26:34
Speaker
i love I love the logo. My pick for the Sega Saturn is Virtua Fighter. ah Played this a fair bit. Fun little beat-em-up fighter game. and It's not a beat-em-up. It's literally a a fighter game.
01:26:46
Speaker
ah But yeah, I thought the graphics for the time were pretty cool. Like the little 3D style that they kind of... I want to say that they started the 3D fighter craze with this, but I could be completely wrong.
01:26:56
Speaker
um But I just remember that Virtua Fighter was pretty iconic at the time, and I did play it a fair bit on the Saturn. So that's my pick. Virtua Fighter. ice I, my only thing about virtual fighter, I thought it was called virtual fighter until a couple months ago when they announced that new virtual, virtual fighter game. I like oh it's virtual fighter. That was virtual fighter.
01:27:16
Speaker
yeah That came out of air from RGG. Yeah. yeah All right, next up. Now we're on to one of the but one of the big boys here. We got the Sony PlayStation in 1995. Oh, boy, this is going to be interesting.
01:27:33
Speaker
my oh I think we could all have three different games here. So, Hodge, I'm going to toss it you. The PlayStation. What do you think of when you think PlayStation? PlayStation. ah You guys are going to be surprised. It is not Spyro that I'm going to go with because even though that is my favorite from that console, without a doubt,
01:27:49
Speaker
The game I actually think of when someone says, like, think back to the PlayStation era is Tomb Raider. I think and this this is like the PlayStation game that I think of. Like, there's obviously great ones. You guys will get to yours as well. And then we could I could spot off 50 fucking games I love off this console. But when I think of that era and I think of, like, the game that made that console, I think of Tomb Raider. That game was so huge. that Obviously, the OG trilogy in its entirety. But...
01:28:20
Speaker
Locking the waiter in the in the sauna get to get him away from you or whatever. Or was the pantry? can't remember what was. But you lock him to get him away from you. He's always following around the house like a creepy old man. But yeah, that that those games were just iconic for the era. So Tomb Raider is my PlayStation iconic or console defining game.
01:28:40
Speaker
Good pick. That's say it's a great pick. I've actually never played a Tomb Raider game. But um ah sir I remember... You didn't play the modern ones? No, ever. Oh, those ones are really good. Yeah, I've heard yeah I've heard good things. I will get to them eventually, I think.
01:28:57
Speaker
um But yeah, Tomb Raider. Alright, it's a great pick. That's definitely and definitely an iconic PlayStation game. Like when people think PlayStation... I went with, uh, not my favorite game. My favorite game of all time is obviously a PlayStation game that is Final Fantasy 7, but I did not go with Final Fantasy 7.
01:29:12
Speaker
I went with Crash Bandicoot, because when I think of PlayStation, I think of Crash Bandicoot. Crash Bandicoot was one of the first games I ever played on my own. um I absolutely adore the Crash franchise. It is my fourth favorite series of all time, Crash Bandicoot, behind Trails, Final Fantasy, and ah well Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy.
01:29:32
Speaker
I adore these games. I think the original Crash Bandicoot is phenomenal. I think all three of them are phenomenal, very much similar. It's the same arc as Spyro, the original trilogy, though. it's like It's like Crash 1 was good. Crash 2 was the best of the original trilogy. Crash 3 is good, but not as good as the other two.
01:29:48
Speaker
Very similar to Spyro. But yeah, Crash Bandicoot, iconic. It was their answer to Mario. And yeah, you Midnight, you referenced it earlier. Crash outside Nintendo. Say, Nintendo, you stink. What is that Mario guy? So yeah, I went with Crash Bandicoot.
01:30:00
Speaker
Yeah, that's awesome, dude. This was another one that popped to mind when I think of PlayStation. But a Tomb Raider was just one echelon above it for me in terms of thinking of iconic PS1 games.
01:30:12
Speaker
right. Midnight. Very good. Very good. Yes, of course, the PlayStation has just a ton of iconic games. ah The first one that I thought of was Resident Evil, the first Resident Evil game, because that's not what I picked.
01:30:23
Speaker
No, that's not what I picked. But that was the first one that I thought of. But of course, when you think of PlayStation, everybody out there always thinks of this game. So I had to go with it for midnight for me.
01:30:34
Speaker
And that is XCOM UFO off Defense. And I probably almost nobody thinks of that besides me, but I played the shit out of this game. XCOM UFO Defense is a game in my top 20 of all time. I love this game. I played the crap out of it. It was so great.
01:30:50
Speaker
You got to name your soldiers. And I used to have me, my dad, my brother, my mom, my friends. And then I would have guards assigned to us, too. You send out the guards first as fodder. That way, if the aliens shoot them and they die, it's just the guard. It's not your parent that dies. So it's all good. Who cares about them?
01:31:06
Speaker
But yeah, XCOM UFO Defense was incredible. I love it. Shout out to that game. I thought were going say Gear. Nope. Nope. right I mean, in terms of being iconic for you. I've never played Metal Gear. No, but i when you said everyone thinks of this, that's why I was like, oh, yeah, yeah.
01:31:24
Speaker
I almost went with Metal Gear Solid because that is very iconic. It's funny. like I don't think of Final Fantasy VII right away, even though it's my favorite game of all time, just because I i don't know why. I just don't. I was going say, I didn't think of it either because I don't think of it as like a PlayStation game. I just think of it as like a great game. like yeah I don't think of it to define that console.
01:31:44
Speaker
So, yeah. All right. This is probably the last. This is definitely the last ah terrible console. Even though one more console on this list failed, this is the definitely the last terrible one.
01:31:55
Speaker
And that is the Virtual Boy coming out in 1995. The Virtual Boy. Oh, my God. Definitely a failure here.
01:32:06
Speaker
Aud, what do you got for your favorite console all time? I mean, there's only one thing I can think of when I think of Virtual Boy, and that is the Optech 1000 DMV Vision Screener. It is the thing you stick your face in at the DMV to see if you can test your ah you peripherals or if you can read the sign. That's all I think of when I think of this. I legitimately couldn't think of a single game for this, so I'm unironically choosing that.
01:32:29
Speaker
All right. so Okay, so the Vision Screener. I'm pretty sure I think I made a reference to that when I went to the... think I made a reference to that last time. yeah when Last time we talked about Virtual Boy, we definitely talked about this, but that's literally the only thing I think of because it looks... just going to write down Vision Screener for you.
01:32:46
Speaker
Alright. For me, i went with... Mario Clash. Mario Clash. And this is like... This was supposed to be the game that sold the Virtual Boy. it was like, this is the game you need to get for a Virtual Boy.
01:33:04
Speaker
And it was atrocious. It was basically a... like i like a 3D version of like the original Mario Bros. But it hurt your eyes because it's all red. And the game was very slow compared to any other Mario game. So I went with Mario Clash. There's also another game called I almost went with called like Wario's some Wario Land game.
01:33:23
Speaker
And there's also Mario Tennis. But I had to go with Clash. I will say i love the artwork for this game. Like throwing the shower on the sewer. They should remake it but actually like make it like work.
01:33:37
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I like that artwork. But yeah. Alright. yeah Midnight, you're up. that is That is cool artwork. Yeah, you should get that. You should buy it for your background.
01:33:48
Speaker
wonder how expensive is. bet that's expensive. Alright. So, nobody owned this console. Nobody cares about this console. So I just picked Wario Land because I looked up ones and, you know you know, this was like the number one result. And I'm like, oh, yeah it's Wario. It was this and Mario Clash are supposed to be like the things you needed to get.
01:34:04
Speaker
Like, this is why you need a Virtual Boy. so wario land and i have nothing further to add yeah all we're gonna move on to 1996 the best year ever because i was born ah you and we got the nintendo 64 64 how i how ironic
01:34:28
Speaker
how i how ironic that you were born on that that year when that console came out. Yeah, I know. And yet you're a hater. but i mean, yeah, I guess. All right. So we got the Nintendo 64. Hodge, you're up.
01:34:41
Speaker
What do you got? ah It's no surprise for me. it's the It's a game that I still play to this day, and that's Mario Kart 64. I adore this game. I understand why you would say it's the worst one or doesn't age well or blah, blah, blah, blah.
01:34:54
Speaker
But this is the game I think of. Every time I went over to my friend's house, it was this in gold and GoldenEye. We'd all be, you know, anytime it was like a sleepover or whatever, you'd throw on game GoldenEye and Mario Kart, but Mario Kart is the one that I still play. So it is just the game I think of when I think of N64.
01:35:11
Speaker
Great pick. Definitely a pick. For me, my favorite game on N64 is Paper Mario, but I did not pick that because it was like one of the final games ever to be released on the console. i don't It's not something I think of immediately when I think N64.
01:35:28
Speaker
I think Super Mario 64. That's what I immediately think of. It's one of the genre-defining games, kind of created the 3D platformer for us. I love it a lot. If you watched our last DLC, we tiered the Mario 64 games. Me and James Soler had a little debate about Mario 64.
01:35:47
Speaker
we kind of went back and forth. A little fun. It was fun. But yeah, I definitely think of this. Jumping in the paintings, all the different landscapes. i Just running around the overworld castle. was like a level on its own.
01:35:58
Speaker
Super fun. I still... play this to this day. It's so, just so much you can do. it It felt like you could do anything. It's like a giant sandbox. um Before those were like popular. So I had to go with Mario 64.
01:36:12
Speaker
Great pick. Great pick. um That is the most iconic game from from that console, no doubt, in my opinion. But the one that I went with is the one that I've talked about many times. WCW vs. NWO World Tour.
01:36:25
Speaker
This game was awesome. I played the hell out of it. And rest in peace, Hulk Hogan, of course. you know He died recently, which sucks. And he was in this game. So there you go. How about that? It all comes back around.
01:36:37
Speaker
It was WCW versus NWO World Tour? World Tour, yep. Okay, got it right. There was also Revenge was the sequel, which was also good, but World Tour was the one that I played the most of. Wasn't like SmackDown versus Raw considered one of the really good ones too?
01:36:52
Speaker
Yeah, SmackDown versus Raw was a big wrestling game too. I didn't really play that one much because I wasn't as into WWF back then.
01:37:01
Speaker
Like I said in the Discord yesterday, and my only history of wrestling is those ice cream sandwich things you could get. Yeah, the rock ice cream sandwich. I can't. Yeah. It's awesome. Dude, those are so good. That's great.
01:37:13
Speaker
All right. Yeah, iconic console. A lot of highs, lot of lows, too. But now we got we we got maybe our biggest gap in time between two consoles. We go three years. We go to the 1999...
01:37:25
Speaker
This is our last failure console, but actually the cult classic, the Sega Dreamcast. Last R.I.P. Sega, but now you're better than ever. So, Hodge, what do you got for the Sega Dreamcast?
01:37:36
Speaker
So, there's I had a buddy who owned this console, one of the ah three people in the world who owned it. And ah there was one game that we always played on it, so I always think of this game first, and that is ah Power Stone.
01:37:52
Speaker
Ooh, that's a great game. Yeah, it was a fighting. And the the one thing, I mean, I remember a lot about this game, but the thing i remember the most was, so this came out, did this game come out? was it Did it come out in 99? It was a launch game for it.
01:38:05
Speaker
Okay, yeah. So you have eight, nine-year-old me playing this game, and there's a part where there's like one of the characters, she's like ah like a gypsy fortune teller type person. I can't remember. this all It's been so long, but I always think of this.
01:38:19
Speaker
And she has like a little cut scene and she's like, she's magical. And so she's had, she's given like her for the fortune to some guy. And she goes like, what is your, I will grant one wish for you. And all of a sudden she's naked because that's what the guy was thinking of in his head of. That's what he wanted his wish to be.
01:38:34
Speaker
And so I was like a nine year old, like, oh um but obviously it doesn't show anything, but her, like, you know, and but as a kid, you're like, oh God, he's naked. so I was thinking about that. And so, yeah, that's, that's what I think of, but the game itself was very fun. It was like, you know, goofy fighter game, but yeah, that's, that's what I always think when I think of the Sega Dreamcasts.
01:38:56
Speaker
funny i played power stone in an arcade once and i freaking loved it and i had no idea was on dreamcast till like way later yeah um that's funny though that is really funny um right next up for me went with sonic adventure now again known sonic hater here but to think about this game was a launch game for dreamcast in 99 and think about what it looked like compared to what games were coming out in 99 this game is absolutely gorgeous i feel i feel like it looks gorgeous today It looks really good.
01:39:25
Speaker
And then even like compared to like early PS2 games, I think this game definitely outshines a lot of those early PS2 games, the way it just looks graphically. And I know a lot of my friends are Sonic fans and and they played a lot of Sonic Adventure 2 and this and Adventure on GameCube.
01:39:41
Speaker
So I've like watched people play through this game and I know how much it's beloved in the in the series. And I know this was like a huge deal for Dreamcast. Like we're launching with Sonic Adventure and full on 3D Sonic game like this is what you have to play.
01:39:54
Speaker
So I had to go with it. Sonic Adventure. And um I think it it gave you the chow garden thing. People really like those chows.
01:40:04
Speaker
It's just the the artwork for this game is so weird just because like the pose he's in is like, yeah, he's in a weird pose. It is a weird pose. Yeah, they fix it on the game. They fix it on the GameCube release.
01:40:14
Speaker
um Yeah. Yeah, the Dreamcast was an awesome console. I'm kind of sad that it failed. I mean, this thing was ahead of its time. The graphics when it came out were insane.
01:40:26
Speaker
um It had like four controller ports right in the front building. It had that little VMU memory card. I thought that the controller was good, although apparently that was a hot take because you guys hate that. I thought the controller at the time was pretty sick.
01:40:38
Speaker
I just thought it was futuristic with the little screen on it, but didn't care that much about It's worse than the Duke. The Dreamcast was awesome, dude. I remember working at Funkoland, precursor to GameStop, and of course we had a Dreamcast. And me and my boy Henry, we used to, like when the store was slow and dead, we'd be playing a lot of Dreamcast. We were playing NFL Blitz. we were playing ah We were playing the game that I'm about to mention.
01:41:01
Speaker
My pick, which is Crazy Taxi. I almost picked this one. It was so fun, dude. It was my backup, yeah. It was so fun just driving people around. The music was iconic.
01:41:15
Speaker
I remember, um so I didn't have it for Dreamcast, but when it got ported to GameCube, because that was like a huge deal. It's like, oh my God, Sega's on GameCube. um I remember being in a blockbuster and my mom doing a double take being like, that is Sega logo on a Nintendo game?
01:41:32
Speaker
And she's like not into video games, but she kind of like knew because my dad, me, my dad and my sister. And she like, we rented it and we put it in. She's like, she like wanted to watch us play it. She's like, there's no way. How can a Sega game be on GameCube? Crazy Taxi was a blast.
01:41:46
Speaker
So much fun. Yeah. Dude, what what a downgrade on the artwork, though, for the GameCube version. oh yeah, definitely. It's yellow, and it says Crazy Taxi? Yeah. Yeah, that's the that's a horrible box art. It's the opposite of what they did with Sonic Adventure, when they make the game ah that artwork better. Yeah. yeah But that's my pick, um Crazy Taxi. Played that a ton while I was working, and it was a lot of fun.
01:42:11
Speaker
Yeah. Great game. Alright, so next up we have arguably one of the greatest consoles of all time, which is ironic because it's like my least favorite PlayStation console, but it has some of my favorite games ever.
01:42:23
Speaker
And that is 2000. We have the PlayStation 2. I say my least favorite PlayStation console, but it's still like a freaking banger. We'll rank the PlayStation consoles one day, and and ah that'll probably be a bigger argument than the Nintendo console ones.
01:42:39
Speaker
Alright, so we got PS2 Hodge. What do you got? um It's no surprise what I'm going to choose, but I'm going to go with it, and that is Kingdom Hearts. Because this game is just definitive for me in just general. I love this game so much.
01:42:53
Speaker
um I was very close, though, actually just also going with TimeSplitters because I played the shit out of that game on PS2 also. But Kingdom Hearts is just, it's such a huge game in my life that I had to roll with it for PS2.
01:43:10
Speaker
What did you say, Sean? Chef's kiss. Yeah. So yeah, Kingdom of Hearts. And I went with the same game as you, Kingdom Hearts. I like Kingdom Hearts 2 more, but this is the game I think of when I think of PS2. It got the series started.
01:43:25
Speaker
I remember seeing it for the first time on Disney Channel, watching one of those commercials, and I instantly was like, this is insane. What you're telling me, Final Fantasy, the game I watch my dad play all the time, combined with Disney, my favorite freaking thing ever, it's coming together?
01:43:40
Speaker
What? And then I remember getting it and originally being upset because I thought it was turn-based combat. And I was like, it's not turn-based combat? What? But then I remember like... That's actually why i loved it. No, I fell in love with it. But like, obviously, it's like one of my favorite series of all time. But I remember thinking it was turn-based. And like, before I got the game playing in my yard, I pretended to have Aladdin in my party. And I'd be like, Aladdin, light your torch and throw it. And that that would be like my that would be like his fight move.
01:44:08
Speaker
I was a freaking weird kid. Yeah. And now you're weird adult. Yeah. know know yeah Playing turn-based combat in my yard. That's hilarious. Kingdom of Hearts. What a game.
01:44:19
Speaker
What a game. And so Midnight's also going to choose mid Kingdom Hearts. So let's move on. No kidding. Yeah, moving on. in All right, 2001. Yeah, so my pick also was Kingdom Hearts. You stole my joke. I was going to say that. ah But no.
01:44:31
Speaker
Yeah, no no don't no, no, no, no. Definitely not. But for me here, I went with, and actually it's funny, you know, this is like the number one selling console of all time. And I did have a PS2, but I did not play it very much. I was more of like an Xbox guy.
01:44:44
Speaker
Xbox original. But on the PS2, an iconic game did come out. One of my favorite games of all time. Although I don't think it's in my top 20 or 30 yet. We'll see.
01:44:56
Speaker
But Grand Theft Auto Vice City is what I'm going to go with. Also, San Andreas came out for this, which was also equally amazing. But I do like Vice City just a little bit more because of that Miami 80s vibe. but So GTA Vice City, amazing game.
01:45:13
Speaker
Launched on the PS2. That's my pick. Hodge, you still need to play it. How much crap are we going to get that we didn't pick GTA 3? Who cares about GTA 3? I mean, that yeah that would have been a good pick. But yeah, i ah there were so many games on PS2 that I i loved. i this i didn't have an Xbox, so this was like the one I was playing all the time as a kid.
01:45:33
Speaker
odd But there are so many great great, great, great, great games for this console. So... But yeah, i i was maybe I should have gone with TimeSplitters just so we would add a different one. But no, Kingdom of Hearts is definitely the one I think of when I think of this console.
01:45:49
Speaker
All right. Great picks, boys. Great picks. All right. Next up, we have 2001, the Game Boy Advance. Oh, my gosh. I freaking love this console.
01:46:01
Speaker
Slash the SP, of course. Yeah. um Yeah, so um um jeff say i'm up um it's no surprise as to what I'm to pick because I've talked about this on here before.
01:46:13
Speaker
But the first game I think of when I think of the Game Boy Advance is Dragon Ball Z Legacy of Goku. I love that entire trilogy. I'm just going to say the first one just because, you know, it's whatever. But, you know, the second one. All right.
01:46:26
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, well, the second one is my favorite because the Android Cell Saga is my favorite arc. Yeah. Same Dragon Ball Z. So. That is, but I'm just as ah it's another one where it's just as a, like a series. I just think of it in tandem with each other.
01:46:42
Speaker
It's not like, I don't think of one over the other. It's just that, that trilogy I love. And so I'm just for the sake of the artwork, I'm just gonna put the first one, but yeah, I love the love, love, love that trilogy. So that is what I think of when I think of Game Boy Advance's legacy of Goku.
01:46:58
Speaker
These games are freaking amazing. We need a collection on Switch. They gave us those Yu-Gi-Oh games. Give us a collection. and Legacy of Goku 1, 2, and 3. Oh, God. Well, 3 is good theory, but day one, definitely.
01:47:08
Speaker
Like, early access. Come on. yeah yeah Phenomenal games. I'll break into GameStop steal it before it's released. That's how much I want it. It's so good. So good games.
01:47:20
Speaker
Such good. And it's a non-traditional Dragon Ball game. It's not like a fighter. It's an action RPG. Yeah. Which is actually, even though it's a very bad game, ah why i like Dragon Ball Z Sagas.
01:47:31
Speaker
Oh my god, that game is so bad. It's so bad, but I love it because it's like a linear open adventure game. like I and thought it was so fun at the time. Obviously, it's horrible, but as a kid, you really think of it. You're just, Dragon Ball Z, awesome.
01:47:47
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. right, for me, I don't think this is surprise anyone. I went with Pokemon Ruby slash Sapphire slash Emerald. This is like when I really, really got into Pokemon.
01:47:59
Speaker
This is like, this is when Pokemon hit its absolute height and it kind of stayed there for about seven years. um These games are freaking amazing. there's it may It ran at 60 FPS, which it made the game feel so much quicker.
01:48:12
Speaker
ah That Gen 3 art style is just gorgeous. That 16-bit art style. Hoenn is particularly my second favorite region in Pokemon. It's my third favorite gen generation of Pokemon.
01:48:26
Speaker
Really close with Gen 4 and Gen 5. ah Some of my favorite Pokemon originated here. I have so many memories just playing these games. I freaking love these games so much. um Yeah, they were just amazing.
01:48:37
Speaker
Shout out to Trico. I freaking love Trico, my favorite starter ever. yeah, I got to go with Pokemon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald. I had Sapphire, my sister had Ruby, and we both ended up getting Emerald, and I don't know how many freaking hours I poured into these games.
01:48:52
Speaker
Nice. Almost not with FireRedLeafGreen, but... i I think I... Are these ones on 3DS? No. They had the remakes for but yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah. Hmm.
01:49:05
Speaker
Okay, nice. Good stuff, good stuff. Sean, you want to guess what I picked on this one? I bet you could guess. Fire Emblem... I don't know what they're called on Game Boy Advance.
01:49:17
Speaker
You are correct, sir. I went with Fire Emblem 7, which was just titled Fire Emblem because it was the first one that came to the West. So... The West's first experience of Fire Emblem.
01:49:29
Speaker
What wasn't mine, because I didn't play it. i know I didn't own a GPA. Didn't have a Game Boy Advance. Didn't play Fire Emblem until Awakening on the 3DS. ah But it is a game that introduced Marth, probably the most iconic character in all of Fire Emblem.
01:49:43
Speaker
What? Marth was actually introduced in Super Smash Bros. Melee because Fire Emblem came out afterwards, which is hilarious. Are you serious? Yeah, which is hilarious. It made its debut in Melee because the game was coming out like two weeks later.
01:49:55
Speaker
Oh, okay. It just, there you go. That is funny. I had a character for a game that wasn't even out yet. All But yeah, Martha's iconic. Of course I do want to play this one day. I will play it. It's on the virtual console or whatever, the and know the expansion pass, whatever.
01:50:09
Speaker
ah So I will probably go back and play this at some point. It looks awesome. Fire Emblem. IGN gave it a 9.5, by the way, which we like IGN reviews when they agree with us. We don't like IGN when they disagree. that's how it goes.
01:50:22
Speaker
But since they said it was a 9.5, I'm going to say great job, IGN. Awesome review. That's how it works. All right. Next up, we have the Nintendo GameCube.
01:50:37
Speaker
um This console is by far one of the best consoles ever. So, Hodge, what do you got? um It's not going to be too much of a surprise. I've talked about this game before. But the game I always think of, i never owned a GameCube, so this is one of those systems where I really only knew the multiplayer games. And so Super Smash Brothers Melee is the game that I played every time I went to a friend's house where the GameCube, I can play Melee. I really want to like I loved, loved, loved, loved loved loved loved this game.
01:51:07
Speaker
And so that's that's what I think of. um The other game I think of is Sonic Adventure 2. But i did not go with that because Melee is the one that I love above all other games I've ever played on game.
01:51:18
Speaker
Yeah, I went with the same game as you, Hush, with Smash Bros. Melee. This mail is is the most iconic GameCube game. People still play competitively today. i probably have over... The entire Smash Bros. series, I have definitely over... My gosh, it has to be over 10,000 hours. has to be. I've poured freaking so many hours into these games.
01:51:36
Speaker
Melee was my first GameCube game I ever got. This is the game you always played with your friends at night. like if You're like, oh, we're staying up night. We're playing Melee. Melee. it took everything the first one did and just made it like 35 times better and the first one was already good the amount of stages the characters it's so good i i freaking love this game uh the adventure mode was so much fun like that like it was just mind-blowing to think about playing this um but i have to go with it it is amazing uh shout out to yoshi my favorite character in smash brothers melee
01:52:07
Speaker
um Also, getting Young Link, like I like freaked out. I remember unlocking Mewtwo for the first time, I freaking freaked out. Like, Mewtwo? What? He's in this game? was awesome. um Yeah, and then I remember thinking Martha and Roy, I had no idea who they were. I'm like, are these Legend of Zelda characters?
01:52:24
Speaker
Yeah, I'm actually surprised you didn't go with Wind Waker. I thought you were going to... No, see, the the game that I think of when I think a Game People, that was Melee. that That is the game I think of. yeah it goes It goes Melee, and then probably Sunshine, then probably Wind Waker, and then probably... Probably Pokemon Coliseum.
01:52:43
Speaker
Oh, Pokemon Coliseum, great game. Yeah. One of those games. and Mario Baseball is up there, too. like Shout out to Yoshi. Nice. Thank you. I played a little bit of that Mario game on the Nintendo.
01:52:56
Speaker
Yeah, the NSL. Yeah, it was actually pretty fun. I liked it. I've never gotten into Strikers. Yeah. But I know it's really, really popular. Played better than the golf game, that's for sure. From N64. All right.
01:53:10
Speaker
Midnight, you're up. I'm up. Okay. So I didn't own the GameCube, as you guys know. I wasn't a big Nintendo guy at this time in my life. But there was a game that came out and was briefly an exclusive for the GameCube.
01:53:24
Speaker
And apparently this game was like the greatest game of all time at that time. Sean nailed it. He already typed it. Resident Evil 4. Resident Evil 4. Now, I didn't play this, so I'm frauding yet again.
01:53:36
Speaker
I want to play this, though. i Actually, I think maybe for a spoopy season, I might play Resident Evil 4 Remake. how about that? um Because everybody says that this game's incredible. What were you going to say, Hosh? I said I am playing it for around spoopy season. I but i have 4 and Village, so I'm going to play both of them.
01:53:53
Speaker
Okay. Well, maybe I'll play it and maybe we could do, if if we feel like it, we can do spoiler cast. But ah but yeah, Resident Evil 4, everybody talked about this was like the greatest game of all time, the greatest Resident Evil game of all time. And it was an exclusive for the GameCube.
01:54:07
Speaker
I actually didn't know that they brought this game to the PS2 like nine months later. I thought that it was exclusive to the GameCube for a really long time, but apparently not. But ah yeah, Resident Evil 4, that's my pick.
01:54:19
Speaker
And now it's like on everything. Yeah. And now I'm going to play it. with with odd We're to play it together in the dark. I'm very excited to finally get to this game. because yeah i've it's It's the one that's like RE2 Remake was one of the best like horror games I've ever played in my life. and Everyone's like, well, 4 is the best. I'm like, i really? It's even better than 2? I love 2. I really got to get to this one.
01:54:44
Speaker
yeah All right. Staying in the same year, 2001, a couple months later, we got... Oh, a couple weeks later, we got the Xbox... A better console. yeah X! No. What's your opinion?
01:54:56
Speaker
um Hodge, you're up. I think I know what you're going to pick, though. mean, there's there's no question about it. It defined this console. It defined Xbox as a whole, and that's Halo Combat Evolved. this It's just...
01:55:08
Speaker
and It's one of the best shooters ever made. It's one from one of the best trilogies ever made. Some people, I mean, I'm sure some people, when they think Xbox, they think of Halo two, which is obviously also a great pick, but it's that first one. I remember it introduced land parties to me going over to friends houses where we put a bunch of TVs next to each other with like three X boxes and play blood Gulch, unlimited stickies, just fucking, Oh my God. I love, love blood Gulch. I remember,
01:55:35
Speaker
They had the demo for it on PC where it was just Blood Gauls multiplayer, and I played it nonstop because I didn't have an Xbox. ah So this game, it is Xbox, and so I i had to go with Halo Combat Evolved.
01:55:51
Speaker
Great pick. Great pick. Obviously, I didn't own an Xbox, but I went with Halo 2, actually. It's just funny you said that. Halo 2. I think this is the best Halo game. And for me, this is what I think of when I think of Xbox because it it was that it really made Xbox Live, like, this is the thing you need to get. I remember everyone playing like Halo 2 and just...
01:56:15
Speaker
thinking it's like the amazing thing i never played it till 2020 so um and i really like the campaign the campaign's awesome too and that gave me my favorite character in the series arbiter um i really like him he's f freaking awesome so yeah i went with halo 2 and it introduced uh double wielding weapons oh did i didn't know that was no i forgot that wasn't in the first one yeah yeah halo 2 shout out to chief
01:56:43
Speaker
All right. Midnight. Why is this website not working? What a piece of shit. I'm trying to get backlogged to work it because I wanted to pull up my list of my top 20 games of all time to see where this game I'm about to say is ranked in my list.
01:56:56
Speaker
You're going to say Fable. No, not Fable. good Good guess, though. Awesome game. But no, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, KOTOR by Bioware. This was one of the best games of all time, one of the best games ever made.
01:57:10
Speaker
Please remake Be Real, because if they come out with a good remake, you guys could experience this for the first time, too, because I'm pretty sure you didn't play it. Oh, you did, Sean. Yeah, I played it, yeah. Okay, my bad. I have not. Hodge, you have it.
01:57:21
Speaker
Yeah. But you would love this game if they it. It's just one of those where at the time, I remember watching my brother play it, and he was swinging at someone with a lightsaber, and the lightsaber goes through the enemy, and then it says miss. I'm like,
01:57:33
Speaker
what? Oh yeah, think the combat's a little janky. Yeah, so I was just, that that's kind of that right there turned me off of it, even though I know this has an amazing story, so I do want to play it when it gets remade, if it gets remade, maybe if it gets remade. So I do do want to play it eventually, but because I know how iconic it is. I actually do own it for some reason. I don't know why, but I just don't want to play it until, unless, if they come out and say the remake is dead, I will go back and play the OG, give it its try, but As of right now, waiting for the ah remake for it.
01:58:07
Speaker
Yeah, i hope they do a remake because, man, if you think Skyrim is dated, KOTOR is really dated. Like, the combat is super janky, but the story is is fucking incredible. The ending is insane. I'm not going say anything to spoil it.
01:58:20
Speaker
um I remember when you get your lightsaber, because for for quite a while, like you're fighting with like a vibroblade and some crap, and then you finally get your lightsaber, and you feel like a real Jedi. You feel like a badass. It's just, oh, it's it's it's peak, dude. It's peak.
01:58:33
Speaker
10 out of 10 video game. KOTOR. Yeah. Yeah, I played it on PC. I always think of it as a PC game, but... Alright, moving Exclusive for the Xbox. ah Funny enough, there was really only two reasons to own an Xbox.
01:58:46
Speaker
It was Halo and KOTOR in the early days. pretty much. Alright, moving on. Alright, last console on our list, we have the Nintendo DS. of the best handhelds of all time.
01:58:58
Speaker
Hodge, you are up. What do you think of? So, I never owned a DS. I have the 3DS, but the game I always think of that I just remember the cover with the giant Mario in the corner jumping, and that is New Super Mario Brothers. I just remember I'd see this game everywhere at the time, and that Cover art just makes you think of it. And so that's really just when someone says Nintendo DS, I think of that game and I've never played it.
01:59:25
Speaker
I've never played any of the DS games, but that is what I think of when I think of this console. It's a good game. um It was the first it was very very unique at the time. was the first 2D platformer since Super Mario World, and that's what made it so unique. It sold so many um DS consoles. It sold so many copies of the game. It was a really good game. I remember playing it. It was the first Nintendo game my dad played since SNES because he gave up after Super Nintendo because he said the 64 was terrible, and he went full PlayStation, and he still has full PlayStation today, but he still plays those 2D Mario games.
01:59:56
Speaker
um But yeah, it's a really good game um I went with... Pokemon Platinum. This is my favorite Pokemon game of all time. It's my favorite gen, gen, well, it's my favorite gen, gen four. My favorite region is Sinnoh.
02:00:10
Speaker
This is, like, perfect perfect Pokemon, in my opinion. Gameplay is absolutely perfect. The story is, like, super interesting, super dynamic, and they post there was a huge postgame. Like, the postgame was amazing.
02:00:25
Speaker
Spritework was awesome. um I absolutely adore it. Um... I just, I love it so much. And I'm so ashamed because when they did the the remakes on Switch, they did Diamond and Pearl and they brought that instead of Platinum.
02:00:38
Speaker
And Platinum took everything Diamond and Pearl did and made it so much better. um So yeah, Pokemon Platinum. I almost went with Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing Wild World, and New Super Mario Bros. Those are my like other ones I almost went with.
02:00:53
Speaker
Oh, and Kingdom Hearts 358 over two days I almost went with as well. But yeah, Midnight Europe. That name. just What are these names, dude? how Funny. It's like a math equation. All right. I went with Mario Kart DS.
02:01:08
Speaker
Now, I didn't own a DS, so obviously I didn't play this. But as I understand it, Mario Kart DS was the first game that had online multiplayer. At least that's what I read. i don't know if it's true, but ah so that's pretty cool. And of course, Mario Kart is super iconic and we all love it.
02:01:22
Speaker
um So Mario Kart DS was my pick. And I don't have a lot to add because I didn't play it, but I'm sure it was great. Game was amazing. Mario Kart DS is f freaking awesome. I remember everyone in my neighborhood, we'd be outside playing and then we'd go inside and we'd do Wi-Fi and be sitting there in our rooms all playing Mario Kart like across the neighborhood.
02:01:37
Speaker
And it gave us dry bones in the little tank cart. And that was f freaking awesome.
02:01:43
Speaker
Nice. Heck yeah. Very nice. All right. That's part one. That's it. Yeah. All right. Good stuff. All right. Let's go for the audio listeners. Let's go through. now No, I'm kidding. We're not going to that. That's way too many games.
02:01:56
Speaker
But yeah, check out the video version if you want to. where I'm sure we'll have some awesome graphics as we always do. But yeah, this was a lot of fun. Hodge, great job with the topic. Sean, great job with the hostage.
02:02:07
Speaker
Um, and yeah, I guess that's it for episode number 39. Uh, let's go around the horn and do some final thoughts, shall we? Let's go ahead and start with you, Hodge. Final thoughts for episode 39 of Games Over Plastic, sir.
