Introduction and Episode Overview
00:00:29
Speaker
Hello and welcome to a another episode of Games Over Plastic. This is episode 43. um As you can see, it's just Hodge and I again.
00:00:40
Speaker
Unfortunately, Midnight is not here again. he is he's doing some family stuff, so we're just going to hold down the fort once again. ah hoch how you doing, bud? I'm doing good. my ah My long vacation is finally coming to an end.
00:00:56
Speaker
Well, i know it looks like my summer vacation's over. Now I know what it's like to be a teacher just sitting around for a month just like, man, i don't know what to do with my time. ah but you do mean You do get bored a little bit.
00:01:10
Speaker
Yeah, i can i can i can definitely I can definitely tell that that that could be a real thing. I mean, my my buddy, my best buddy, he also a teacher. So he always, he's also a football coach. So it goes from two months of him being like, Oh yeah, I'm free all the time to all of a sudden, like, yeah, I'll see you in November when football season's over. Yeah.
00:01:32
Speaker
Yeah. But yeah, I understand why teachers like being teachers though, with that dip of yeah product productivity. Yeah, it is nice, but yeah, I know I'm, I'm back at work. I'm back to coaching some soccer and, you know, doing a lot of,
00:01:48
Speaker
Just working. it's It's great. It's great. No, I really do like it this year, though. I have a really good group this year. So, yeah, I'm enjoying it. um But before we get into what we're actually going to talk about, you just want to get through some a little um little stuff. Like, here we go. 00:02:17
Speaker
really anything leave a comment leave a review whatever you want to say um yeah it'd be great leave us comments leave us feedback ask us questions whatever you want um so our topic for today is going to be game recommendations we've done a couple of these but we're going be doing them again because why not because there's so many good games to play But before we do that, as always, we're going to talk about what we have been playing.
00:02:47
Speaker
And Hodge, we're start it off with you. Hodge, what have you been playing?
Silent Hill 2 Experiences and Recommendations
00:02:54
Speaker
Yeah, firstly, I finished Silent Hill 2.
00:02:58
Speaker
i am not going to go for the platinum for this game because I saw that there's like five endings you have to find or something, and I'm not going to do multiple playthroughs just slightly alter my actions. to I know that New Game Plus adds stuff to the game, so I was debating going back through and doing New Game Plus, but...
00:03:17
Speaker
ah Yeah, it was it was one of those games where, as I said last week, it felt a little empty because it's a PS2 game, so obviously it's not going to be as fleshed out as a modern game, but ah graphically it was beautiful.
00:03:32
Speaker
ah One, ah our buddy Sensei, who has been on the show before, told me, he's like, once you get to the labyrinth, you're going to feel kind of like, when is this over? And that's exactly how I felt. I got to the part and I knew exactly what he was talking about.
00:03:45
Speaker
I'm like, this game is just a little too long. actually, when I looked it up, it said it was like a 20, 25 hour thing. But how long to beat always adds time because I beat in, I think, 12 hours. So I beat it fairly quickly.
00:03:59
Speaker
But it still felt just a little too long ah for me. But overall, it was a it was a fantastic game. I would recommend it to anyone who likes survival horror games. It's it's weird. I don't don't expect everything to make sense entirely. It's a it's a pretty weird game. But yeah, I enjoyed it overall and I'm happy I got to play it. It's probably not one of those I'm going to go back to 100 times. Like there there are some horror type games that I like playing.
00:04:28
Speaker
um multiple playthroughs but I don't think this is going to be one of those but yeah it's funny you say that I'm actually going to start Silent Hill 2 next week I'm very excited to start it I'm going to be playing it in the dark all the lights off Yeah, I don't know if you want.
00:04:46
Speaker
I don't know if there's a way to like save scum the endings or something where if you like save before certain moments in the game, like if you want to go for because I know you like going for platinums more than I do. So, yeah, there's like five endings to the game. And so you have to.
00:05:03
Speaker
I think two of them you have to play new game plus because you have to get these certain items that trigger the other endings. But so, yeah, you're going to have to play through it at least twice. I know.
00:05:14
Speaker
But yeah, if I decide to go for it, who knows? I've never played like I'm not really never played a Silent Hill game, so it should be interesting. Nice.
Medieval and Twisted Metal 3 Nostalgia
00:05:23
Speaker
nice But yeah, next up, I am i started Medieval, ah the remake, the PS4 remake of the classic PlayStation 1 game. I had actually never played these games.
00:05:37
Speaker
Or I might have briefly played like one of them, maybe like a demo or something, because I never owned these games. I know that this, but it was one of those series that as a kid, I always wanted this game.
00:05:50
Speaker
But I just... There was, you know, as a kid, you, you know, you can only get the games you're given or, you know, or save up your allowance money for or whatever. So you get one game a year but on your own kind of thing. But ah i I was enjoying it. I ended up falling off of it just because there's so since it's a classic PlayStation one game, it's one of those games where.
00:06:12
Speaker
if you run out lives, you have to start, out like, not start the whole game over, but start over from, like, the beginning of the level or what whatever. And so I'm on one level where you have these... you've Have you played Medieval?
00:06:26
Speaker
So I've not. My only... I didn't even know what Medieval was until PlayStation All-Stars came out, and then Sir Daniels was introduced, and i'm like, who the heck is this guy? And so I went into this rabbit hole and looked for it, and then they released, like, the...
00:06:40
Speaker
like the remake, like you said, and I meant to get it, but like, I just never did for some reason. Yeah, it's on a, it was a PS Plus game, I think. one Yeah, I own it on PS Plus. I'm sure I would like it Yeah, but so i was asking because in the game there you can pick life bottles, which basically there's so the way you get health in the game is there's either little health vials on the ground. They pick up and it gives you health or there's like these like these like little green fountains of of health and you go stand on them and it fills up basically like a bottle or two of worth of health.
00:07:17
Speaker
and ah And there's only one per level, and you have to beat the level. you can like So you can't join a level, suck up health, and then leave the level. It'll just go back. to be It's a save and quit situation where if you leave a level, you don't get the credit for being there.
00:07:33
Speaker
And so I'm on a level now... where you basically trigger this thing that happens and all these ghost monsters show up and they're really strong.
00:07:44
Speaker
And I go, I'm going into this level with like one and a half bottles of health and I have six unlocked. So like, And so being at the start level, it doesn't you don't start with full health or anything. You start with what you had at the end of the last level.
00:07:57
Speaker
And so I have one and half bottles of health and I'm going through and I'm triggering this thing. And these things are so strong that like just touching them hurts you. And so I just keep draining through my life bottles and I can't beat the freaking level.
00:08:10
Speaker
And so and then, of course, one time I did get in there because there's a health on there, too. So by the time, you know, I kind of triggered, I might like four bottles or something of health.
00:08:26
Speaker
ah So I was like i was saying, i I just didn't have the health. And so I kept getting killed by these monster things. And I was pissed because there was one time I there is like one fountain of health. So I got to like three or four bottles.
00:08:39
Speaker
And but they're still that strong that they like destroy. But I got to the end boss. I kill the boss and get like the rune that you're supposed to get from it. And of course, it doesn't trigger cutscene or anything. It's just still in the game.
00:08:52
Speaker
And so right before I killed him, he shot off a bunch of fireballs. And as I go to get the rune after I kill it, one of his rogue fireballs hits me and I die. And so I just start the entire level over.
00:09:03
Speaker
I was so, yeah, I was so angry that I was just like, all right, I'm done. I'm done with this. I like, I had rage quit a game in a long time, but I was so mad that that happened.
00:09:14
Speaker
And it's like, it'd be one thing if you start your level, every level at full health, or if you go somewhere or there's, there's a gargoyles you can buy weapons from. Why can't I buy health files from them? Like, let me buy health because the only way you get them is these fountains, which don't even fill you up all the way. They fill you up like two bottles or two lives or whatever.
00:09:35
Speaker
And I'm like, so I'm struggling just to stay alive doing fighting these monsters that hurt you just by being like near you. And I'm like, i so I'm like, this is I'm done. So I just put the game down. I'm like, I might come back to it.
00:09:48
Speaker
I don't know. But that pissed me off so much. I'm like, I'm I'm done with this. I'm done for now. So. i don't know. I might go back to it, but I needed a break after that because that pissed me off so but so much.
00:10:02
Speaker
But yeah, it's it's just... Yeah, that can get that can get that can get so annoying when you're playing a platformer like that. Yeah, and it's it's one... Like I said, it'd be nice if you could buy your health or if there are other places to find health, it'd be nice, but you're you're stuck with what you have and it's it's a pain the butt.
00:10:22
Speaker
Um... But lastly, but not leastly, i was just kind of scrolling through ah PlayStation Plus just because I haven't really looked at the library in a while. And I came across they have all four PS1 Twisted Metal games on there.
00:10:37
Speaker
And the one I played the most as a kid was three. That's just the one we owned. I played all four as a kid, but three was the only one that we owned. So I hopped into it, played it. Those controls.
00:10:48
Speaker
That game is rough to play. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. not Not an easy game to play nowadays. ah But I went through and I played as my favorite character, Warthog, who's the art army zombie guy who shoots the red, white and blue rockets.
00:11:03
Speaker
um I played through as him, beat the game once. I got every achievement or trophy naturally um just because except one, um because I remembered all the secrets of the game. Like it's been that long, but I still remembered where all the secrets were. And it's and and it's a trophy to find each secret weapon.
00:11:23
Speaker
And I just remembered where they were. so So I went and got them all. And I got the... So through one one playthrough, I had all but like three or four trophies. And it's a really easy game to platinum. you just The only one I don't have now is you have to beat the game five times with five different racers. And and so I've only beaten it with one. I played through Warthog. But...
00:11:46
Speaker
There's other ones like fall into the fan in Tokyo because you can shoot away this like barrier, which causes you to fall into the fan. So if you drive over it, you'll fall and die. And so I did that. And ah that's the only because I knew that was there. So I knew to avoid it when playing through. And then I saw that as a trophy to fall into it. So i was like, all right, well, now I got to go back and I got to go back and do it. So.
00:12:08
Speaker
I did it. I'm one trophy away from the platinum. I don't know if I'll do it because even though it only takes like a half hour to play through with a character, I'm like, I don't know if I want to play through it five times because this game is pretty rough to play.
00:12:20
Speaker
So, but I, how many characters are there? Oh man, there's probably eight or something, eight to 10. There's not that, oh there's not that many. So, um,
00:12:31
Speaker
I know I don't know if you can cheat because there are cheats to get to certain levels with certain characters and to unlock certain characters. And I know I'm pretty sure do using like invincibility and stuff. I think that does deactivate the trophies, but I don't know if the level skipping ones does. So if I can just get to the last level to find different characters and just beat it that way, maybe I'll try that. But.
00:12:54
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. It's i like I loved this game as a kid, but it is rough to play in 2025. It is. It's because so on the dual sense, I guess the game probably came out before the dual shot came out. The controller came out.
00:13:09
Speaker
because you can move with the D pad of forward, backwards, and then just aim left and right with the D pad. But if you're using the sticks, you have to aim left and right with your left stick, but you have to move forward with the right stick.
00:13:25
Speaker
Oh my God. That is so weird. It's really bad. And, and if you use those, you can't reverse. If you pull the right stick back, it doesn't reverse. It just breaks.
00:13:37
Speaker
And so you have to use the D-pad to back up. So you have to use basically three areas to, if you don't want to only use the D-pad to fully control your car. So I tried doing with the D-pad and that controls even rougher somehow than holding down forward on the right stick and aiming with the left stick. Somehow that's even worse.
00:13:56
Speaker
ah So yeah, it's a, it's a rough game to play on the PS5. I'll say it's, that much but yeah it was i loved that game as a kid uh it was always so and it had like rob zombie music playing on it and stuff so like it was it was i loved that game as a kid but yeah as a 34 year old adult it's uh it's pretty rough
00:14:20
Speaker
Yeah, I've never played Twisted Metal. We never own them. Like I knew what Twisted Metal was. We just never own them. um I don't know why we just it was one of those things that we had most of the PS one like, you know, oh, these are the games that divine the PS one.
00:14:35
Speaker
We never had Twisted Metal. ah The only experience I ever had with Twisted Metal was. The 2012 PS3 game. Oh, God. heard that was bad. bought. I didn't play it, so I bought it, put it in my PS3, and it wouldn't read the disc.
00:14:50
Speaker
And I brought it back to, to um I don't even know where I bought it. don't know. It might have been Best Buy. And they gave me another copy, and I brought that one back, and it didn't read that disc either. so I'm like, all right, I guess there's just a sign. I'm not supposed play Twisted Metal.
00:15:03
Speaker
So I brought it back, and i don't know. I got something else. Yeah, it but um it sucks, because I think Twisted Metal could be an awesome game nowadays if they brought it back. But I think they tried it with Destruction All-Stars, and no one liked it. So they...
00:15:15
Speaker
Should it have just been a should just been. Yeah, because my my actual favorite Twisted Metal is Twisted Metal Black from PS2. But was yeah, the PS2 one. Yeah, but that was also because ah it was like the edgy one. So i was like as it it came out when I was, you know, a young teenager. So I was like, oh, yeah, darkness. yeah Yeah, like, yeah. And emo. But that game introduced me to the band Rolling Stones because painted black is like the theme song for that for that game. So.
00:15:42
Speaker
You didn't know what the Rolling Stones was before that? I don't think so. But Paint it Black. Oh, I knew who they were, but I didn't listen to them until that because I heard like a couple of songs. And of course, as a kid, I was like, this is old people music. And then I heard Paint it Black. of This song is awesome.
00:15:58
Speaker
Even i love Rolling Stones now. But yeah, the yeah, at the time, I didn't really know them that well. But Paint it Black was such a banger that it's still my favorite Rolling Stones song. But yeah, it's.
00:16:11
Speaker
it was it was It was fun to go back and play, but I cannot really recommend these some of these PlayStation 1 games. But, yeah, that's all I've been playing.
00:16:23
Speaker
Yeah, those games really didn't age the best, those games of era. I actually forgot to add one to this list, so I actually have one more before move on. All right. That's fine with me. um Yeah. i So I actually am kind of sad I picked this game up right now because I am actually loving it. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as i much as I am, but I also I hopped into Dead Island 2.
00:16:47
Speaker
um I am really enjoying this game. It is a lot of fun. um But I also loved the first one, which I know that's a very divisive statement because I know a lot of people are like, Dead Island sucks.
00:17:00
Speaker
Dying Light's the good zombie game. and Or Dead Rising. And I'm like, I don't know. I really loved Dead Island 1. I don't know if it was the setting, like being on the tropical island, that was really a cool setting, like on this ah resort and stuff.
00:17:13
Speaker
But ah this one, I will say... I'm loving the gameplay. The graphics are beautiful. Like when you hit a zombie, you actually hit them.
00:17:24
Speaker
Like it's show, like if you hit them with like a machete, you actually see the cut where you hit them. Like it's a very realistic, like, Yeah, it's very gory, obviously. you got it If you're not into gore, then i don't know. but But it's I like the like the how like accurate it kind of is. it's It's kind of cool that way. But I'm really loving it. The only thing I will say, ah going through like the California thing, it's pretty cool being like in a post-apocalyptic.
00:17:49
Speaker
It's not even post-apocalyptic. It's recent. like It just happened. So it's happening while you're there. And so you're kind of in this like, currently burning down l LA and it looks really cool, but I will say obviously since, uh, I mean, I saw this with the reveal. I was actually really worried about when they kind of re revealed the game, uh, like, you know, a few years ago before they dropped it, I was kind of worried about it because it had that very cringy zoomer saints row kind of humor.
00:18:19
Speaker
And there are, there have been some characters like I, right before we started recording, I was playing a mission where you help this girl, She's like trying to go viral on TikTok or something. And so you have to help her kill zombies. And like, yeah, you have to help her kill zombies in like a certain way. Like you have to light them on fire, kick them off the building or just these random things of that's like what she wants you to do with the zombies. So like she could get fame, internet famous. And then.
00:18:46
Speaker
like after you beat the mission she's like i need to upload this don't you know who i am i'm amanda whatever and he's just like just go back to our like basically it's a thing of get everyone back to your your fort so it's like just go back there and maybe we have wi-fi there and you can upload there she's like okay bestie i'm like oh my god i hate all of this but uh so the cringy like l la characters aside because it's very very like, oh, come on, baby. Like one of the one of the people you're with is like a famous actress. And so her agent is there, you know, trying to be like an agent to her. And it's just like,
00:19:23
Speaker
It's very cringy, but the gameplay is so much fun that I look past it. Like, I don't even care about the story. Obviously, you're just a dude trying to survive a zombie apocalypse and you're in L.A. And I don't really end.
00:19:35
Speaker
It's not really spoiler because it happens right at the start. You get bit at the start of the game and you find out you're immune. So that's why i you're able to go through and get bit a bunch and not turn. So you' you're doing that. But ah it's yeah, it's very, very cringy. But It's a very fun game. I'm enjoying it. I love the open world zombie kind of, you know, or semi open world zombie, you know, things. And you'll, you know, you'll pass a garage that's, that's missing a fuse to open the door.
Dead Island 2 and Hollow Knight Silksong Impressions
00:20:02
Speaker
And so obviously, you know, you can come back later with a fuse and open the door and get whatever, you know, the,
00:20:07
Speaker
the presents that are inside and uh it's it's i just i'm really enjoying it i it's exactly what i loved about the first one just the exploration and you know zombie killing fun and so uh the reason why i'm sad that i picked it up is because on tuesday i'll be flying out for a week and a half for work so i'll be you know leaving in three four days and i don't think i don't think i'm gonna this beat by then so i'm gonna have to come back after a week and a half of taking a break and pick it back up, and I hate doing that, but...
00:20:39
Speaker
ah Me traveling, I'll be able to have some Switch games on this because I'm just taking my i'll be taking my Switch with me on my trip because I'll need something to do sitting in a hotel for a week and a half. So I'll be playing some Switch games and I'll come back to Dead Island 2. But I am very much enjoying this game and it's co-op. So if anyone wants to play with me, I'm happy to play with people because it seems like it wouldd be a lot of fun to go around and hacking up zombies with ah with friends. So, yeah, that's what I'm playing.
00:21:11
Speaker
Yeah, so my only history with Dead Island 2 is I played it at PAX East 2023. Oh, wow. And I remember played I played like the โ you're on the Santa Monica Pier bridge area. Yeah, I'm actually going to Santa Monica right now.
00:21:26
Speaker
That's like where i yeah where I just took a break, about to leave for Santa Monica.
00:21:31
Speaker
the game like broke and I fell through the bridge like the the um the pier and I was like stuck between and i'm like what is going on and then it's just said the demo has ended and I said something to the guys and they're like oh okay yeah we'll address that like all right whatever man yeah whatever floats your boat i guess you are a play tester at those things so yeah yeah it was so weird but other than that i mean it it was like fun to play yeah like i'm really enjoying it so i'm happy i finally picked it up if i think it was a p it's either on ps plus like the the netflix type service or it was a ps plus game that you got monthly i don't remember which one but
00:22:10
Speaker
yeah i'm enjoying i think it's also on game pass or it was a games with gold because i know i have it on both systems i just as people know recently i've kind of switched to playstation 5 as my primary so decided to go there a sony pony right huh what because you're a sony pony you're yeah i'm a um big old sony pony yeah but uh yeah so i've been playing that and yeah those are my games so
00:22:35
Speaker
All right. Well, those are some awesome games that you've been playing, Hodge. And I'm going to take over. I only have two games this week. I'm going to start with the game that I started last time. And I actually got the 100% in the game. But as we know, Hollow Knight games do not end at 100%. There are so much more to discover. And that is...
00:22:58
Speaker
Hollow Knight Silksong. And this game is, like I said last time, it was blowing me away like five hours in. i am now like 27 hours in, 28 hours, and I just can't get enough of it it. is so much fun to play. It's like so addicting. The combat is so smooth.
00:23:15
Speaker
I thought Hollow Knight's combat was super smooth and super fun and super addicting. Silksong just takes that and to the nth degree. And i just can't believe it. I love all the new additions they've made.
00:23:25
Speaker
That area and traversal is so much smoother that I, it's going to be hard to go back to Hollow Knight. Cause always wanted to go back to it, like the original Hollow Knight and like get the platinum. Cause I never did. I was like two trophies away, but I had to do this like crazy, crazy, like platinum.
00:23:40
Speaker
this For those who played Hollow Knight, the Pantheon, one of the Pantheon things, it's like it's super it's ridiculous. I remember trying it for three weeks straight, and I just couldn't do it. But this is just so much... It takes everything it does and does it better.
00:23:54
Speaker
so like I love it. I love playing as Hornet. um She's awesome. I also think that... I didn't really care for like the story of Hollow Knight. Not that I really care for the story of Silksong, but yeah they kind of add the lore a lot more in this game. And it's it's really cool. And it's it's very different than what I thought the direction, the quote unquote story and lore was going to go into.
00:24:19
Speaker
So I really like that. I like talking to the various bug NPCs. It's always funny because some of them have like really funny lines. And just the the diversity in the areas you can track traverse through. um If you're going to play it again, I highly recommend that you don't look anything up because it's like that's the fun of these games is not looking it up trying to discover on your own going to an area that you're not supposed to be in and get your butt kicked.
00:24:41
Speaker
That's like so much fun. That's like part of the fun. discovering new pathways going down a pathway that you like going back to an area and then discovering there's like more that meets the eye it's always fun I have some students who are playing it right now and I heard them talking about it I'm like oh yeah I'm playing Silksong too they're like wait you're playing Silksong I'm like yeah I am And then, so every day, like, he'll like, oh, how far in Silksong are you? And when I got the 100%, I was like, yeah, you know, I 100%ed it the other day.
00:25:07
Speaker
kids were like, what? Whoa! I'm like, you better not be looking anything up. though We're not, we're not, we're not looking anything up, Mr. Mason, we promise. But yeah, like they're they're like loving it too. And then i they convinced another kid to get it. And so that kid just got it like last, like on Thursday. And he told me he got it on Friday and he was like having a blast with it so far. So it's a really fun game. I'm playing it on Switch.
00:25:28
Speaker
It's like awesome to play either in handheld mode or on the TV. It's gorgeous looking. the The artwork is just so nice. um It's awesome. But again, it's one of those games that it is difficult.
00:25:40
Speaker
It is it is like a 2D Souls like essentially where if when you die, you know, you lose everything unless you, you know, upgrade. um But yeah, it's really fun. I love it so much.
00:25:52
Speaker
yeah that's uh the only experience with that those kind of games i have was i played ori in the blind forest which was a very difficult game i got my ass kicked in that game a lot but ah the thing that you that you talk about liking which actually is one of those things that's in dead island too that i like that you talk about is you'll go to certain areas like i like exploring in the in dead island they have like it shows what level they are. And if it shows a skull next to them instead of that level, it means that they'll kill you basically immediately. So I'm like, Oh, now I, I know I got to come back here later. Okay. Nevermind.
00:26:25
Speaker
And then, so you just kind of heed the metal note of like, Oh yeah, there's a place I unlocked that I need to get to when I'm a higher level. And yeah, I love that in games, the, the Metroidvania-ness of it of, Oh, I come back.
00:26:37
Speaker
That's cool. Because I always love that kind of stuff of the exploration and finding like, Well, this is a pathway that I can tell I'll be able to go down to down one time one day, but as of right now, I am unable.
00:26:49
Speaker
So, yeah, I love that kind of stuff.
00:26:53
Speaker
And one more thing there before I move on. There is some characters from the first game that reappear in this game. One of them I was shocked to see, and you don't find out until the end game. So it was pretty cool to for him to appear, or for it to appear, I guess. I mean, it's...
00:27:11
Speaker
It's kind of like a sentient being. so Yeah. That's cool. Yeah. Yeah. Silk Song. it's It's really fun. I think I'm going replay it on PlayStation. Go for the platinum on there.
00:27:21
Speaker
But I just felt like getting it on Switch because I like my Switch and I love playing on my Switch. Yeah. That's kind of how I'm feeling about Hades. I'm like, do I really do I want to get it on Switch 2 or do I just wait for it to come to PlayStation? i don't know what to do.
00:27:34
Speaker
I'll probably I might double dip. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. I don't know. We'll see. See how I'm feeling. See what the DraftKings fun provides me. yeah
00:27:46
Speaker
That's a whole other thing. um But I also have the game that I've been waiting for all year and the game that Midnight has been waiting for for a while.
00:27:58
Speaker
Notoriously, he drafted this in the third round where he probably could have got it in the final round. um This was Trails in the Sky Remake. um this is the first game chronology chronal chronologically sorry in the trail series you know my beloved trail series my third favorite series of all time um and i was one of the people who yes i was gonna buy the remake day one i was gonna you know i was gonna love it no matter what but i was one of those people who always said
00:28:29
Speaker
you don't need to remake this game just re-release the original one because it holds up so well because it's that 16-bit art style that looks like it could be on the snes but it's really and when you break it down it really couldn't because of ah everything that's going on in the world and the mechanics and everything but this remake i've played so i played six hours of it already oh my god i am blown away yeah this game is 91 yep it's 91 right now um yeah it's a ninety one right now wow um They have done they took everything from the first game.
00:29:03
Speaker
And they made it so much better in terms of the quality of writing, because, again, this is the first Trails game and it was released in 2004 in foreign Japan and didn't come here to like 2010. So the translating wasn't the best.
00:29:18
Speaker
But they've really um spruced up the writing and made it seem like it's a more modern Trails game. ah The combat they take from the modern, the the more recent Trails game, so it makes the combat feel a little bit smoother and better. Yeah.
00:29:34
Speaker
But yeah, I'm thrown into this world and I'm falling in love again with Estelle and Joshua. They're such amazing characters. um The world is awesome. And ah Trails in the Sky, like the original one, like the first game, Trails in the Sky, it's much more of all the Trails games. It's the one that's like, I wouldn't say the lowest stakes, but it it seems like it's more of like a journey to learn rather than, oh, I'm about to save the entire world.
00:30:02
Speaker
It's more of like, oh, we're learning to be these things called bracers. um And we're just here to, you know, you know help out the the village and the towns that we go to and take on these like little quests, um as opposed to in later trails games where you're fighting like literally God to save the world, like I said.
00:30:20
Speaker
um so it is a little bit more of like the, like a more of a mellow tone, which is why a lot of people feel like when they see trails in the sky, they get really nostalgic for that. Like, Oh, it's such a cozy game compared to the newer ones.
00:30:34
Speaker
Um, But yeah, I am so enjoying it. It's so much fun to are see these see these lands in full 3D. We've seen these characters in 3D before because they they do appear in the future game.
00:30:47
Speaker
But to see them at this part in the timeline, so they're a little bit younger, they're learning... um it is really cool and they uh i'm really hyped because they announced the trails in the sky 2 trails in the sky sc which is called second chapter they already announced that remake and it's going to be coming next year so i'm pretty excited because like i said this game's awesome i think this is a really good entry point for so many people because This is the game to start the trail series. And you don't start at trails the sky. You don't start at trails of cold steel. You hear me meatball? You don't start there.
00:31:19
Speaker
I know you, I know you're telling everyone, Oh, you can start at trails of cold steel one. No, you can't. You start here. You start at the sky series. Then you go to the, um, You go to the Crossbell Saga. Then you go to Cold Steel.
00:31:31
Speaker
So this is a perfect place for people to jump in. And I think a lot of people will. And I can see this becoming the new Persona. You know, the, oh, Persona was so niche. And now it's like the mainstream. And I can see that happening with this.
00:31:43
Speaker
But I'm going to be that kid. I'm the hipster. I was there first. I love it. Now I hate it. No, I would never hate the series. um But yeah, I'm super excited um to get more of it. I mean, like, i already know the story. i already know, like, the the beats. From what I hear, I've read reviews of the game, which I really don't care about reviews, but it literally, it really doesn't change. It's it's it's not like Final Fantasy VII remake where it's like, oh, this is a completely different story.
00:32:07
Speaker
Whereas this game is pretty much a one-to-one remake. So I'm really excited to just keep going. I i love I just love this world. Like being in this world just like brings me so much joy. i love it.
00:32:19
Speaker
Nice. Yeah. If there weren't like 17 games in this series, I would maybe one day.
00:32:27
Speaker
But I'm happy. I'm happy you love this series and I'm happy it's it's ah holding up from its previous release for you or it's pride yeah from its What's the word i'm looking for? from its it's it's It's a good original remake, else I'll say.
00:32:45
Speaker
Yeah. One thing I am going to say this is, because they're already confirmed to remake second chapter, they're obviously going to make the third game. like I wouldn't see why they wouldn't make the third one. And that one, I am so curious to see what they do with the remake, because the third one is like...
00:33:01
Speaker
very different than the first two. it's ah it's like people People regard it as a stepchild because they there's a lot of differences in terms of combat and mechanics and overall world design.
00:33:13
Speaker
so I'll be very curious to see how that third one does. because a lot of people, that's like their weakest Trails game. This is my favorite of the Sky series. It's my favorite one in the third game. oh really I'm going to be really curious to see when they get to that third one.
00:33:27
Speaker
which The way they're pumping them out, I can see Maybe late next year, because we're getting like two or three Trails games a year. Yeah. Which is wild. That's that's quite ah's quite a release schedule.
00:33:40
Speaker
Yeah. Very much so. Yeah.
00:33:44
Speaker
But, all right. That was what we are playing. So we got some great games there. Silent Hill 2, Medieval, Twisted Metal 3, Dead Island 2, Silksong, and everyone's favorite, Trails of the Sky.
Game Recommendation Segment
00:33:58
Speaker
Yeah. um But we are going to move on to our main topic of the show. And that involves game recommendations. Like I said, we've done a couple of these before.
00:34:11
Speaker
But we decided we're going to bring it back. And my goal, I don't know if Hodge did this, was I am bringing up four games that have never brought up on this show.
00:34:22
Speaker
Ever. um Even if there's a fire. Mine, I've mentioned all of them, but they've only one of them has ever been a focus that I've ever talked about. So three of them have been probably in passing that I've kind of talked about.
00:34:41
Speaker
I think. All right. i'm You know what? Actually, now that I'm I might have mentioned like one or two of these games, but I've i've never actually like talked extensively about them. now may I looked at my list of like I looked at all the games I've, you know, played in recent years and stuff. And most games I play are played by a lot of people. So my recommendations are, I mean, these ones are a little, some of them are smaller games, but um I think the next time we do recommendations, is I'll be recommending games that people probably have played, but we'll see.
00:35:17
Speaker
I don't play as many games as you.
00:35:21
Speaker
Yeah, I tried to do a wide variety of games. So i I tried to choose four games from four different like genres. So unfortunately for all my weeb friends out there, like myself, I only have one JRPG on this list. And it is very obscure. And I would be, if you, I'm going to tell you right now, if when we get to that game, if you have played that game, you need to comment below because I will be very impressed because I have never met anyone else who's ever played this game other than myself.
00:35:50
Speaker
Final Fantasy 7. Oh, of course. it extremely Extremely rare game. No one plays it. yeah what yeah Yeah. Good choice. All right. Are we ready to get going on our game recommendations? Let's do it.
00:36:05
Speaker
All right, Hodge, we're going start with you on your first game recommendation. Hodge, take it away. Yeah, my first game, this is going to be one I've talked about recently, but I loved it so much I want to give it another shout-out, and that is The Midnight Walk.
00:36:21
Speaker
um I obviously, as people know, i or if you are a listener, I beat this game only like a month ago or so. Yeah. If you have a PSVR 2, this is a must play. Like you have to experience this game. If you have a PSVR 2, it is so cool to be in this world and to be able look around and see everything to the scale that it's meant to be seen. Cause there's one level where,
00:36:49
Speaker
There's just this giant walking around the entire time and just be able look up in the sky and see him like walking around and doing whatever he's doing is so, so cool.
00:37:00
Speaker
um If you don't have PSVR two, I'm not going to say this going to be some nine, 10 out of 10 game. It's not perfect. It's not, you know, amazing, but I really love the story. If you love like Coraline or Tim Burton or those kind of claymation movies, you would probably love this game.
00:37:18
Speaker
The world is just so, so cool. The story is awesome. So basically you're, you and your little pot, I think it's called pot boy. I called him pothead just cause his head was hot.
00:37:30
Speaker
um you and your little pothead walk around and you're lighting fires and basically you're trying to go to the center of this world you're doing the midnight walk is what they call it and you're trying to get to this mountain to reignite the sun because the world's in darkness and there's just the every and so you just kind of go there's a you're on the path and obviously it's a video game so you have to go off the beaten path to go all these different places and They all have their own story of what happened to them once this fire went out and all. And it's and one of them is like, I don't want to spoil it, but basically an entire town regrets an action that they that a grievous mistake that they made and they all regret it. And you're basically trying to write that town's wrong.
00:38:15
Speaker
And it's. i I absolutely adore this game. Yeah, it's it. I'm sure it plays fine. It's basically a walking sim puzzler if you're just playing and, you know, well, no matter what mode you're playing in, it's that's what it is. But I, as someone obviously who loves walking sims, I just absolutely adored this game. Every moment of it, the the puzzle, it's not like they're, you know, complex that you you can figure them out within 10 seconds of being there. Like I, I didn't have to look up anything or anything like that. Like,
00:38:44
Speaker
You know, you it's it's it's pretty easy to figure out. And the and the the the I think I got the platinum in like eight hours. It's a or six hours. Maybe it's a very short game.
00:38:57
Speaker
So and all the basically the platinum is um there's two endings you. So you need to each ending, but you can start on the last level and do the second one. You don't have to replay the entire game.
00:39:10
Speaker
And then there's collectibles you find throughout the game. So, and you can always chapter select and do that kind of thing. You don't have to. search of ru the amanda show eddie mied out and all that bring the popcorn we'll bring the party tonight starting in eight seventh central nick only on next I don't know what's going on with my internet today. This is going to be a fun edit episode with these cuts. But um anyway, I'll just kind of summarize. i don't know. I might have been talking to myself for three minutes. I don't know. But ah basically, i love Walking Sims, so I love these kinds of stories and the the creepiness of it and just...
00:39:52
Speaker
it's It's worth your time. like i so i don't know if this got cut or not. i don't know if I set up But to get the Platinum, took me like six hours. It was a really, really quick game. ah There's two endings. You have to just replay the last level to get the ending, ah the second ending. And you can chapter select for all the collectibles and stuff. Yeah. It's a very simple game to platinum, if that's what you're into.
00:40:14
Speaker
um But I just, I think even, yeah, VR makes this 10 times better, but that's not to say that the without is 10 times worse. It's still a great game, because did 2D just to collect everything after the fact.
00:40:29
Speaker
um And it's still, yeah, it's still a beautiful game. It's like the claymation stuff, but... If you have a VR 2, you owe it to yourself to play this game. If you don't, I think it's still worth it. ah Maybe you can maybe wait. I think it's a $30 game, so you can maybe wait for it to be on sale or if it ever joins PS Plus or whatever. But ah yeah, I recommend everyone play this game. I absolutely adore it.
00:40:54
Speaker
That's awesome. I mean, this game looks so good. This is definitely like a Halloween game for me. So I'm going to playing in October. um And maybe i'll do ah I'll do a double feature. I'll play this game and then I'll watch Nightmare Before Christmas.
00:41:06
Speaker
Yeah, I love that movie so much. Oh, dude, speaking speaking of that, I have a student who's who's super into like stop motion video. So he makes like all these stop motion movies.
00:41:17
Speaker
Dude, he made this like hour and a half long film. He said it took him like nine months to make. Yeah, it's insane how long that stuff takes. So good on that kid. Maybe he'll make a career out of it. That's awesome.
00:41:30
Speaker
Dude, he's like super into it. It's awesome. That's awesome. Speaking of names, that's my phone background. Love it. Love it. This is Halloween. This is Halloween.
00:41:41
Speaker
and and I love it because you can watch it twice. You can watch it two times a year. i always I always basically end Halloween season with it because it's it's yeah it's both. It's Halloween and Christmas. but i mean it's tech It's more of a Christmas movie.
00:41:55
Speaker
I think it's more of a Christmas movie. They've come out and said it's a Halloween movie. but It's both. I watched it on Christmas Eve one year and I was like, this is very creepy for like a joyous day where everything's all light and stuff. then watch this movie. It's like a creepy, dark movie. I'm like, this is- Sandy Claws.
00:42:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's- Sandy Claws. I freaking love that movie. I love that movie so much. No, yeah, it's it's it's it's awesome. But yeah, so that's the thing is, like I said, if if you like if you like the Coraline, Paranorman or Tim Burton type movies, this is a must play, I think. I absolutely love this game.
00:42:32
Speaker
All right, well, I did buy it, so I will be playing it. Nice. All right. um All right, we'll get to my first recommendation, and mine is very different
Nostalgic Game Discussions: The Simpsons and More
00:42:44
Speaker
than that game. Like, very, very different.
00:42:46
Speaker
This is the most, what I think, one of the most underrated licensed games of all time. That is actually good.
00:42:58
Speaker
And that is The Simpsons game. Came out in 2007. Yes. This game is an absolute banger. It is better than Simpsons Hit and Run. And I say that with confidence.
00:43:13
Speaker
I played the crap out of this game. Hodge, it's funny. We were talking about the Simpsons last night on Discord. You you know you brought up how much you liked it. I commented, I wrote, I was obsessed with that show from 6th to 8th grade.
00:43:24
Speaker
This came out when I was in the summer before 6th grade started. So you know I was like in heaven with this. This is like peak Simpsons fandom for me. It was four player.
00:43:35
Speaker
It was like a beat them up. They had like direct like that the um cut scenes between levels were like Simpsons cartoon level animation. um They had so many throwbacks to so many episodes.
00:43:48
Speaker
One of the best parts is when you um there's a part where you actually go to like heaven and you fight God. That is awesome. There's there is this one level where you go into like four sub-levels, and they're all based off of video games. So there's a Grand Theft Auto one where you play Marge.
00:44:05
Speaker
it's got And it's called Grand Theft Scratchy. um There's a Pokemon spin-off in the game where you're collecting these like Japanese icons. It's so funny. there's a say There's a Call of Duty one where you play as Bart and Old Man and Homer's father, Old Man Simpson.
00:44:20
Speaker
just love... This game... Sorry, yeah i just plugin I was looking at my Xbox Series Simpsons game. my I didn't 100% it, but my last trophy or achievement that I earned was so January 6, 2008. Yep, because the game came out in July of 07.
00:44:36
Speaker
No, came out in like November of 07 because I got it for Christmas in 07. And I just freaking played this game like crazy. Me and my friends would play four-player split-screen co-op with this game, running around.
00:44:48
Speaker
The first level is the episode where Homer... has the dream that he's eating all the chocolate and he gets really big like i love that like and that was his power up you play bart in his uh bartman costume um he's a whole duff beer level this game was freaking awesome it was incredible it's so good yeah i mean i have i have better memories with hit and run but hit and run i played this game once whereas hit and run i played it over and over and over because like i said earlier when we were kids, you play what you have. And what I had was hit and run.
00:45:21
Speaker
I like, I like hit run also better because hit and run, I think it came out, when they were in like their 14th or 15th season. yeah' kind like four three two doesn Yeah. And that's kind of where the quality dipped.
00:45:34
Speaker
So all of the references in that game were from that epic, just perfect area of Simpsons. Yeah. And the Easter eggs were in there tight. Like there was an Easter egg around every corner in that game.
00:45:48
Speaker
where Simpsons game, it came out and after the movie and after the quality and basically fallen off a cliff in that show. But obviously there's still great references to classic Simpsons stuff, but it just had a lot of more modern stuff to pull from, which wasn't as good. But no, that game, I remember it was fun as hell. I wonder if it's back and back. Cause I kind of want to, was actually thinking, I was actually thinking about that game yesterday while I was watching the Simpsons.
00:46:12
Speaker
It's so good. like I want a real- So I was so mad. This game never got trophies on PS3. So I did the- odd get You'll never get- you'll never This is you know this is you know so Sean, his PS3, no 360, no Xbox.
00:46:26
Speaker
I printed out the achievement list and manually checked off things. And I got the quote-unquote platinum on the PS3. By just checking things off. I played this game so much. It was so much.
00:46:37
Speaker
I remember opening it on Christmas with that. And then I got like that eighth or ninth season on DVD. Like that the Simpsons DVDs. guy I used to have all the seasons. Did you have the ones that were shaped like the characters? Yes, I did. Yeah, I had those too.
00:46:50
Speaker
yep I remember like Christmas. That was something that I would like. I would get Simpsons for Christmas all the time. I would watch The Simpsons. I would play The Simpsons. I'd play one of my various Simpsons games.
00:47:01
Speaker
I was super hooked. I got The Simpsons movie for Christmas that year. i also... That year that the movie came out, I saw it on my birthday because it came out right before my birthday. God, I freaking love... That was like peak Simpsons.
00:47:12
Speaker
You inspired this game recommendation by clogging this memory yesterday. Dude, I... That's funny you say that because... all right, so The Simpsons movie, was it 05 it came out? oh seven and 07.
00:47:22
Speaker
07. So it was right around this game. Okay. um I remember... We were camping the weekend it came out, but I was so obsessed with The Simpsons at the time um that i made my family go see it with me in theaters. Like we left our camping trip to go see it. mean, obviously we went right back. was...
00:47:43
Speaker
During the day camping, what else is there to do? So we went and saw it. And of course, one of the one of the opening jokes in the movie is like, we're paying to see something we could see on TV for free. Everyone's a sucker, especially you. And points to the camera.
00:47:56
Speaker
And my dad, I hear my dad whisper goes, exactly. Why are we here? i actually really like the movie. I thought the movie was really good. I actually watched it not that long ago. I love that movie. Like it's my it's great.
00:48:10
Speaker
To this day, anytime I go to Home Depot, I still go, Dome Depot. Dude, I don't know. hub ah Well, the one actually, the line from that movie I quote all the time is when the there i don't know the military truck, whatever, it stops at a stop sign, but it says SOP. It just says SOP on it.
00:48:31
Speaker
And yeah the guy goes, we can't keep stopping at every SOP yelled in one VE sign. I always quote that. and so i also love the, i also love the, also my worst day ever.
00:48:43
Speaker
Your worst day so far. far Yeah. I love that. Yeah. It's a, yeah, that movie. I love that movie so much. It's yeah yeah. I was obsessed with the Simpsons. That's why every year I still watch the tree house of horror episodes. Every single. Oh, they're so good.
00:48:58
Speaker
They're so freaking good. Yeah. They're the best. i had the on, uh, as a kid on DVD, I had a treehouse of horror collection. It was only four episodes. It was just four random treehouse of horrors, but I watched those things on repeat, like in Halloween, during Halloween season, I would watch them over and over. I loved it. i also had that.
00:49:18
Speaker
And I had a Nickelodeon a Halloween DVD collection, which had Rugrats, Fairly Odd Parents, Rocket Power, SpongeBob,
00:49:31
Speaker
that might have been it. But it was just a bunch of just Halloween episodes from random nick to Nickelodeon shows. And I watched that all the time. I would still watch that. I love, dude, Nickelodeon is, all right. So for anyone listening on YouTube, if you just type in like 90s Nickelodeon Halloween or something, there are YouTube channels that have like three hour videos where it's a three hour time slot from Nickelodeon where they have commercials from the 90s. I love that. That is so good.
00:49:58
Speaker
yeah So it's literally like six episodes over three hours or five over two and a half. And with literally commercial breaks in them, it's and so it's like you're watching straight up fight, like two and a half hours of Nickelodeon from the 90s.
00:50:10
Speaker
It's so awesome. I've watched that a few times. But yeah, those those are those are awesome. But yeah, the Simpsons game, phenomenal choice. I really hope I wonder if this is a back pat game because I would love to play this game again. It was it's a phenomenal, phenomenal game.
00:50:28
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Next to go. Me next. Yep. You are up. All right. My next game. I had to do this one because I did talk about it out briefly on some episode and both you and Midnight said you'd never played it before. So and this is a popular game, so I never thought I'd have to recommend this game. But for anyone who's like you and Midnight who haven't played it, my next game is Portal.
00:50:54
Speaker
Uh, this it's one of the most iconic video games of all time. Like everyone knows the line. The cake is a lie. Like this game, I think it's only two hours.
00:51:07
Speaker
It's a very, very short game and 200% it. I think it only needs one or two extra playthroughs because I know I hundred percent this on Xbox. so Uh, I actually probably should replay it on a PlayStation. I've never done that.
00:51:21
Speaker
um But yeah, it's a very I mean, obviously, I would also say Portal 2, but I got to recommend the first one first because you got to play it. Portal 2 is a better game. It is 10 times better than Portal, but you got to play the original before you hop into into Portal 2. So I have to say Portal is the game.
00:51:39
Speaker
It's just obviously if you hate puzzles, i don't know. You might hate this game. I but again, i love walking Sims puzzlers. So this game is perfect for me. I played it. Oh, I literally beat it in one session from start to finish all the trophy or achievements. And yeah, it's just you got to play a Portal. It's it's gaming royalty and it's a sin that you and Midnight have not played it. And anyone listening hasn't played it. Please, please, please play this game.
00:52:08
Speaker
I apologize for not playing it. I was not when this wouldn't portal come out like 2004. Oh, it's old. I don't remember. 2002 maybe. think it came out. It was part of the orange box, which is why probably a lot of people didn't play it.
00:52:25
Speaker
But yeah, I just wasn't. that yeah like I didn't even know what portal was still probably like 2010 portal. It's 2007. Actually, God damn. was a great ear Yeah, I know.
00:52:39
Speaker
Simpsons game, Warhawk. Honestly, at some point, we need to do an 07 episode. because that Just 07, yeah. Yeah, because that year was insane.
00:52:51
Speaker
It was, there's, yeah. um But, yeah. So 2007, did it come out? Yeah, it was only released in a bundle, or originally only released in a bundle, the orange box for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.
00:53:07
Speaker
But yeah, it then it came out on its own eventually. But yeah, it's it's absolutely incredible. And it's it's insane to me that... mean, one thing if one of you hadn't played it, but the fact that neither of you have played it is... I can't believe Midnight hasn't played it.
00:53:20
Speaker
I'm not shocked I haven't. I can't believe Midnight never played it. Yeah, it's i mean it's probably on Switch too. You play it on Switch. I think it is, yeah. um All right, nice recommendation.
00:53:31
Speaker
Nice recommendation. Maybe it'll be like my fable, but I'll just never play it. Anyway, my next game is Fable. All right. And that's where I leave. yeah Insert gif of Sean leaving.
00:53:43
Speaker
yeah All right. Well, that was a good pick, Hodge. My next game is... You're going to laugh. You brought up Nickelodeon.
00:53:54
Speaker
I'm going Rocket Power Beach Bandits, baby. This game was a 2002 PS2 game. I freaking love this game. Again, a licensed game, but honestly, one of the best.
00:54:06
Speaker
It had some, to it was definitely inspired by Tony Hawk Pro Skater because you could go around on your skateboard and do tricks. There was like a whole separate game mode for just doing like, basically tony hawk challenges with like your skateboard and your um skates skating around but there was also this giant open world where you go around ocean shores trying to save it um because like some evil corporation is trying to like take over ocean shores and it's like they like robot enemies this game was awesome you had different characters you could play split screen mode where you'd burst each other in like the tony hawk pro pro skater stuff they have mini games you can play as all the different um you know the different um
00:54:43
Speaker
you know, Otto, Sam, Twister, Reggie. Um, you can even play as Lars, which is cool. And you can play as, remember the kid with a mask? Oh, yeah, the hockey player kid.
00:54:54
Speaker
Yeah, you could, like, play as him. The kid would, like, go around. He had, like, that the hood on. he had, like a like, a scary mask on. You could play him. But, this game was freaking awesome.
00:55:07
Speaker
There's so many different levels, vehicles. You get to just travel around ocean. ju It was, like, mind-blowing in 2002 for six-year-old me. Because I'm, like, I'm running around Rocket Power like I'm on the show. This is f freaking awesome. so Dude, yeah, I'm looking at screenshots. I'm sure this game plays like garbage now, but... Oh, probably.
00:55:25
Speaker
But at the at the time, i actually remember this cover of it showing... up but not squid uh twister twister yeah and then him is squid net behind yeah i remember this cover but yeah i'm looking at screenshots as a kid i would have loved this running around the the town and ocean shores yeah ocean shores yeah yeah the show this is incredible yeah dude this game freaking ruled it was like there was like so much to do too like like i said you had like your spinoff tony hawk mode where you just go for like high scores and stuff but then you had like an action adventure game where you're fighting robots and trying to save ocean shores like different areas and it's like semi-open world it is a 53 on metacritic but i really don't care because i freaking love this game and i really highly suggest it if you have a ps2 play this game that's awesome
00:56:20
Speaker
Yeah, I'm looking it just straight up It looks like a licensed game from that era. like it just straight up That's exactly what it looks like. Yeah, and you know, it's great.
00:56:33
Speaker
is fine Oh my god, I love it. Raymundo!
00:56:40
Speaker
Yeah, but yeah, Rocket Power Beach Bandits. That's my recommendation. Honestly, this isn't the game I was thinking, but if you've played Rocket Power Beach Bandits, please let me know. Bring it back. Let's get the remaster.
00:56:52
Speaker
i just posted a picture and ah no context picture in discord for midnight to see and be confused as to what's happening.
00:57:02
Speaker
Oh, my God. Squid. That's hilarious. All right. All right. All right. My next game.
Highlight on Unique and Quirky Games
00:57:12
Speaker
What was it? Oh, yeah. So this is one that was mentioned at some point, but I want to get back to this game soon because I loved it.
00:57:20
Speaker
ah i've I've beaten it, but I want to play it on PlayStation because I have it there, too. Now, and that is Psychonauts 2. Um, I know we have briefly discussed this game at some point. I don't know. I don't know when or why, but we have talked about it, but Psychonauts is one of those just criminally underrated platforming series.
00:57:44
Speaker
Uh, the first one, it is backwards compatible. It's an OG Xbox game. Um, obviously it doesn't have achievements cause it's OG. So if you want to go in there, achievement hunting, it's not going to happen cause it doesn't have any,
00:57:55
Speaker
But it's a fantastic platformer from that time. It still holds up. There's one level at the end. It's called the Meat Circus, and that level is impossible. But other than that, i did beat it. But other than that, it still holds up super well.
00:58:10
Speaker
um But, yeah, the sequel, it's obviously it's on both platforms, PlayStation and Xbox. It's just an amazing platformer. It's, again, another one of those where it's like,
00:58:20
Speaker
Obviously the the main character, his voice is the same guy who does Invader Simms. So I can just, record I just recognize that voice. So I was thinking of Invader Simms with this game, but it's like a Tim Burton platformer. Also, it's kind of funny that I'm in another one where it's kind of that weird look.
00:58:37
Speaker
It's like Tim Burton meets, it meets like James and the giant peach looking characters. They're all weird looking, you know, kind of claymation looking kind of people, but. This game is just it's an incredible platformer. I I love collectathons, as people know. So obviously to get the platinum, you have to go through and collect all the little memory things that are around the levels, which sometimes they're paying the buck to find. But yeah, I just I love platformers. I love this game. I want to replay because I think it's either on PlayStation Plus or it was or no, it was a game. I think it's still on. I think it's still on PlayStation Plus. I think it still is. Yeah, I think it's this I think it's this month's game with golds or PlayStation Plus whatever monthly game.
00:59:23
Speaker
So if you haven't downloaded it, at least add it to your library to have it to play in the future. friend I mean, that's just good advice for any PlayStation game that's available for the month. But just add it. You never know.
00:59:36
Speaker
yeah i just this game is incredible and obviously it's a little weird so it's kind of a perfect spoopy season type game because it's just a weird weird game because you're in people's minds and so you know you're kind of in their in their brain and you see what they think so yeah uh did you play this one i can't remember no i've never played it i really want to though yeah it's it's an incredible platformer and so i recommend this for anyone ah It's obviously on Game Pass because they own Double Fine. But if you're on PlayStation, it is the free game this month.
01:00:08
Speaker
And so I suggest getting it. So it's it's free no matter what system you're on. So i just whoever you are play this game. It's incredible. I know someone in Discord talking about should they play it. And the answer is yes.
01:00:20
Speaker
play psychonauts and psychonauts 2 you can skip to 2 if you want if you don't want to go back and play the old janky one it i think it has a recap at the start of 2 not that it's that important of what it is because it's obviously just kind of a goofy platformer but yeah i would suggest both of them but psychonauts 2 is definitely the one i would say you need to get in there especially with it being free on both systems so yeah play psychonauts 2
01:00:48
Speaker
All right. That's a great, great pick.
01:00:55
Speaker
All right. we ready for mine? Here we go. My next pick is the... you know I have to throw the JRPG in you know anytime we talk anything game, so I have to.
01:01:06
Speaker
mine is and We're gonna talk about it right now, and that is called Steamboat Chronicles. Again, that is Steamboat Chronicles. And again, this is the game that I have never...
01:01:17
Speaker
ever met anyone who's played this game other than me. um It was actually published by Atlas, funny enough. So, you know, you have your, um you know, your Persona fans and your metaphoric Fantasio fans.
01:01:32
Speaker
um It is very different than any JRPG I've ever played. In fact, your character is named Vanilla Bean. or vanilla beans, because ah the reason your characters name that is because you can basically, you know, here's your fable shout out you. It's kind of like fable, I guess, where you can um make choices and you can be good or you can be evil.
01:01:53
Speaker
um There's mechs in the game. ah You really have a lot of control. it's like a giant sandbox, but there's also mini games in it with like rhythm games. That's how you like customize your Mac and you can fight with your max too.
01:02:07
Speaker
um You're trying to there's like a there's like gangs that are like trying to take over like this, like little villages, seaport village. And you are basically trying to save it slash kind of be the evil ruler of the village, too, because it really depends on the decisions you make.
01:02:22
Speaker
But again, they name him Vanilla Bean because of that. It's supposed to be like a joke, like, oh, you know, you're so vanilla. But like you you get to like paint it. It is super fun. Artwork is definitely like, um, Atlas style.
01:02:35
Speaker
Um, they did make a sequel. actually never played the sequel though. Um, But yeah, it is super fun. The mechs are called Trotmobiles. So instead of like mechs, just call them Trotmobiles. And again, you get them really early in the game. And that's how you like play the game. They use it for mini games, it for fighting, use it for basically everything.
01:02:55
Speaker
I highly recommend it. It's a really late PS2 game. um And yeah, it's super fun. The music's really good as like most Atlas games. So yeah, um you definitely see like early Persona vibes from this game, like modern modern Persona with the writing and like talking to people and creating relationships.
01:03:14
Speaker
So yeah, Steamboat Chronicles. Well, you can I know why they didn't make any more of these because you were the one person who played this first one. So they're like, let's make the let's make this game for this kid who played our first one. And then you didn't play the second one. So like...
01:03:28
Speaker
He didn't play it. We can't make them anymore. And if anyone is wondering, I said Steam Bot Chronicles. I know it sounded like boat. That's how I say bot sometimes. I feel like really pronounced that. It's part of the Boston thing. I'm sorry.
01:03:40
Speaker
Steam Bot Chronicles. when i say I looked at Steam Boat Chronicles. and like I don't see anything. But Steam Bot Chronicles. That's its just the way I talk sometimes. Sounds like boat. um yeah, it's super fun.
01:03:54
Speaker
Nice. I have nothing to add to that because obviously I don't know anything about Atlas. So I didn't, I've literally never heard of this game. I know you're playing it. I know you're going to play it Yeah.
01:04:05
Speaker
Yeah. I'm looking at it now. Honestly, it reminds me of the Fullmetal Alchemist game from PS2. It looks similar to that. Just because it's a PS2. I've never played it.
01:04:15
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, that's what I should have recommended in here, is that game. But ah my last game, ah this one, actually, it's funny because I made my list before I saw this news.
01:04:27
Speaker
um The creator of this is making new comics, so hopefully that would mean that the games can come back, and that is The Darkness. I know neither of you have played it because I did mention it.
01:04:39
Speaker
I think it was actually... think it was... um i think it was on an episode of games we of ips we want to come back i think is the episode interesting And I did the darkness for that because this I actually looked both of the games are on PS Plus Premium through the back and pat thing. I think you have to stream them because there are PS3 games.
01:05:06
Speaker
But yeah, darkness and darkness two are on that as i was looking through the library the other day. And I was like, I kind of want to go back and play these because they're so much fun.
01:05:18
Speaker
So if anyone hasn't played these games, which I feel like this game, what I thought this game was huge, but apparently it wasn't as big as I thought it was because I know neither you nor Midnight have played it. And i remember yeah until you brought it up, I had never even heard of it Yeah, because when we were in Butler, I remember this very specific moment. When we went to that comic book shop, we were looking through and they had darkness comics. And I remember I took off one of the trades and I showed it to the the group we were with. I'm like, dude, the darkness is a great or it has comics. I want these games to come back.
01:05:53
Speaker
And literally everyone was like, I've never heard of that. I'm like, how has no one heard of this game? I could have sworn this was like a huge game when it came out. But apparently not. But for anyone who doesn't know, you play as Tony Mastatrolli. don't know his name. he's You're an Italian mobster. Such an Italian name.
01:06:11
Speaker
yeah I can't remember what his name is. But you you get murdered on your 21st birthday. Like, the mob takes you out. And ah you end up surviving because this thing called the darkness takes over your body.
01:06:23
Speaker
And it's just these, like, demon tentacle things. And so when you're playing, you're double... the double fist and guns, but you also have the two demons. So you have all these powers to go through and like, uh, being in the darkness heals you. Uh, so like you want to avoid light and stuff, but if there's like an overhanging lamp, you can use the demon to like shoot out the light and then you absorb the darkness. And then, uh, if you want to be sneaky, you can like hide, you know, behind a corner
01:06:54
Speaker
And use one of the demons to like slither across the ground through the darkness and then stealth take people like it's an insanely fun game. And it's a really kind of creepy story. Because obviously you're just like ah you're a mobster on a revenge tour, basically taking out all the mobsters who, you know, executed you on your birthday.
01:07:12
Speaker
And. Yeah, it's really cool. The sequel, I liked the sequel. The gameplay was better, but the sequel switched to cell shading for some reason. So the first one's like this very dark game.
01:07:24
Speaker
And then the sequel, it's kind of cartoony looking. I don't know if they wanted it to match what the comic book looked like or something. I don't know what was going on, but... um yeah i don't know why its switched but i i like the look of the first one but better but both of these games are still fantastic and everyone should play them if you have the chance because they're they're just awesome and and they're again they're kind of good for a spoopy season because yeah you play as these little like demon tentacle people but um
01:07:57
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, and you can you can ah you can summon in little demon guys to help you to to take out people. It's i don't know. It's really fun. And if you haven't checked it or ah comment below if you have actually played these games, because I'm curious, because i swear, and I feel like i'm the only one.
01:08:13
Speaker
I feel like I was going crazy thinking, like, did these games even exist? Or was it ah was it a fear or dream I had? Because ah no one ever no one ever talked about them. So, ah yeah, the darkness.
01:08:23
Speaker
Everyone should play these games. They're awesome. Yeah, no, they're not real Hodge. I created a fake Wikipedia page for them. I knew it. But, yeah, the reason why I thought that was cool was I was looking the other day and, yeah, when they said the Darkness creators come back with new comics, I'm like, that'd be awesome if they also just came back and made and a new game because I think this game could be, this series could be huge. It's a very cool, like, concept. So, I don't know.
01:08:53
Speaker
I think it would be sweet if it came back, but. Nothing wrong with that. That's just me. All right. Great pick. Great pick. All right. And my last recommendation. Here we
Backyard Sports Games Memories
01:09:06
Speaker
go. Now this one, I've had some crazy weird recommendations. Very different than Hodges.
01:09:10
Speaker
But my next one is a game I'm sure people have played. I'm sure people have played. And that is, well, they might've played one version of this and that is backyard football, 2004, not any of the other ones, but 2004 in particular.
01:09:26
Speaker
Now, Jeff Garcia is on the cover of this one. You're going to, now I'm to take you down a little memory lane here. Circa 2003, this game comes out. Sean gets it for the PC.
01:09:37
Speaker
He becomes insanely obsessed with it to the point where I used to wake up at 3 a.m. before school to play it. And I used to get yelled at every day.
01:09:47
Speaker
Yeah, so Backyard Football 2004, it's just an amazing game. used to get yelled at every morning for waking up at 3 a.m. to play it before school. like I was in like first and second grade, so that probably wasn't the best.
01:09:58
Speaker
um I used to be the Melonheads used to be my team. Shout out to Pablo Sanchez, Pete Wheeler. The reason why I liked Backyard Football 2004 is the particular set of pros they had.
01:10:09
Speaker
like You had Jeff Garcia, obviously. But it also had Curtis Martin, who was a freaking beast in this game. You had Michael Vick, who was also insane. I used to play Michael Vick at running back in this game, not quarterback. free as This is pre-dogfight. Well, it could have been like concurrent dogfighting.
01:10:24
Speaker
um Before he got caught, basically. yeah ah It was probably happening, but... yeah It had David Boston, which is like the most obscure, like random NFL plays wide receiver. He played for the you played for Washington. and He played for the Chargers.
01:10:39
Speaker
It was so weird. Yeah. David Boston was in this game. Zach Thomas from the Dolphins was in this game. Brian Urlacher. Shout out to Hodge right there. Brian Urlacher was in this game, but it was super fun. I used to love it.
01:10:50
Speaker
This was the last game that was like 2D style game, like not like the full 3D backyard football, backyard baseball style. So like I used to I remember picking all the kids. They'd always be sitting on like the the bleachers and you go around just pick.
01:11:03
Speaker
You'd be like, oh, show me your skills. And ah you're like Keisha Phillips, Ernie Steele. I freaking love these games. I love all the backyard games. It's particularly backyard football and backyard baseball are like my go to. But Backyard Football 2004 and Backyard Baseball 2005. I spent so much time playing these games, like an absurd amount of time.
01:11:22
Speaker
um There was unlockables and collectibles. I just love the series. And I know they brought back like Backyard Football like 99, which I never played. so I'm going to end up playing that. But I really want them to bring back like 04, which I know would be impossible because of the licensing and stuff.
01:11:37
Speaker
But yeah. It was super fun. Oh my God. I'm trying to think who the other pros were. like I got, I remember most of them, but I didn't, I only used a car. I used to try to limit myself on pros I use um because I thought it was like, i don't know. I wanted to use the actual backyard people.
01:11:55
Speaker
You know what i mean? Yeah. um All right, here we go. I got the list right here. Backyard football, 2004. All right. You had, oh, David Boston, Curtis Martin,
01:12:08
Speaker
um jeff garcia jerome bettis marshall fock marvin harrison mike vick zach thomas yeah there wasn't this game did not have a lot of pros in it compared to the other games um but yeah it was super fun i loved it and shout out to pete wheeler nice got my ginger love in there for you i'm pete wheeler this is an andy dalton household Dude, he looks like Oh my God, it's Andy Dalton before Andy Dalton.
01:12:37
Speaker
Dude, what is wrong with me During Andy Dalton's prime, I should have been calling him Pete Wheeler this whole time. Oh my gosh. Pete Wheeler. That's fun. But yeah, backyard football and even backyard baseball too. Backyard baseball 05 is freaking awesome too. So, shout out to those games.
01:12:53
Speaker
Yeah, these were games that I never owned them, but my friends had them. So there were always games that I'd have to play at friends' houses. Yeah. I remember this was like the game that everyone talked about. Like, yeah, these are like the best sports games.
01:13:05
Speaker
Yeah. Dude, you can play. Instead of the Super Bowl, they called it the Cereal Bowl. And you had the Backyard Conference and the Front Yard Conference. I was in the Front Yard Conference because was in the AFC. I used to replace the Patriots with the Melonheads.
01:13:19
Speaker
That's funny. Dude, I loved it. Dude. I used to like write game. So this is how, you know, it's crazy. I used to write game write-ups for these games. Like I'd be like, oh, it was a melon heads versus the Cardinals today. And i'd I do like a little post game write-up and I try to read him to my dad and my dad would be like, I don't care. That's just, that seems like something adult Sean would do, not just kids. Sean.
01:13:42
Speaker
Oh, definitely. i would definitely write write-ups for these games. Are you kidding me? Yeah. Dude, when I used to play like all these sports games, I used to do like we used to like do like fake me and my friends would do like fake post game write ups and fake post game shows.
01:13:56
Speaker
It was great. We loved it. That's incredible. Oh, that just gave me an idea for a game I have to do for our next recommendations game or episode.
Nicktoons and Simpsons Gaming Nostalgia
01:14:06
Speaker
I'm just gonna throw out one more nostalgic game. I have Nicktoons basketball for the PC.
01:14:11
Speaker
game roster was fucking oh freaking insane i just swore wow that's the first time i swore this year um this game is right yeah but yeah um this game was insane like nicktoons basketball the roster for nicktoons basketball was unreal like you had so many obscure nickelodeon characters you had freaking tommy pickles from all grown up not the original but the all grown up tommy pickles but then you had like yeah and you had like sj9 from uh um remember that a teenage robot lives next door Oh my gosh, I forgot about that show. Yeah, she was in the game. But then you had like Aang and Katara from Avatar. Nicktoons Basketball. Shout out to that game for PC. I i love that game.
01:14:50
Speaker
Yeah, I think, I'm trying to think. I think that Teenage Robot, was like right after my time, kind of when fell off. That was like peak for me. It was like peak for me. Yeah, because it was probably like 0203 is when I really stopped yeah watching.
01:15:05
Speaker
because Oh, you play as TAC, and from TAC the Power of Juju was in the game, too. Your favorite? Oh, yeah, my favorite. Remember that? Sydney Vortex. god You can play as Goddard.
01:15:17
Speaker
Dude, the game was sick. I freaking love this game. There was so many different arenas. It's like hoops three-on-three, and like it was so much fun. There you go. Nice. Yeah, so just that's in a little extra recommendation for you guys. Nicktoons basketball.
01:15:31
Speaker
If you can get it somehow running. Yeah, right. Yeah. Yeah, that's the that's the only problem with some of your recommendations this episode is how many of these are available on current. Oh, I know, right? Yeah. um my Fun fact, my sister was really obsessed with the backyard games as well.
01:15:47
Speaker
that she She preserved a laptop from 2007 that could run Backyard Football 2004, and she had it until probably a couple years ago. And it would run Backyard Football 04, run all the old Harry Potter like games on PC.
01:16:01
Speaker
Oh, damn. I just looked. The Simpsons game is not available on modern consoles. Oh, that is absurd. Get the remake. We want a remake.
01:16:12
Speaker
I do have my Xbox 360, so I could. Dude, we stream the game. I'll fly out to Iowa. We'll play co-op. We'll stream it. There you go.
01:16:23
Speaker
Yeah, I'm looking. Man, that sucks. Man. Simpsons game, Simpsons Road Rage, and Simpsons Hit and Run were all Bangers. Dude, my first... like Sidebar. we's gonna we Yeah, a couple minutes. Sidebar. My first ever Simpsons experience was any this any NES game that my mom used to play when I was a little kid. It was like Krusty the Clown.
01:16:44
Speaker
This like Krusty the Clown game. And she would play it. And then I realized it was a terrible game later in my life. But I like loved it. Like watching her play it. Yeah, I... um I remember...
01:16:56
Speaker
i don't I don't know what my first like experience at The Simpsons was, but I do remember watching it on ah my TV downstairs and my mom coming in and being like, you cannot watch this show. This is an adult show. You can't watch this show.
01:17:11
Speaker
Yeah, we she got so mad that we were watching The Simpsons. But it was the same with South Park. i was i had a I had one of those friends that everyone has as a kid whose parents just don't give a shit what they Oh, like my parents?
01:17:24
Speaker
Like my parents. Yeah. And ah so that's how I got into South Park when I was like eight years old. Like first, first year was on TV. We were already watching South Park because i was like, yeah, I was like seven or eight when it came out. And I remember the first episode I ever watched, even though it was season two.
01:17:40
Speaker
ah So i don't know if I maybe it was season two. I started watching. But the first episode I ever remember watching was the Cow Days episode of South Park where ah the where they're trying to win the Terrence of Philip dolls and Cartman ye gets a concussion and thinks he's a Vietnamese prostitute.
