Speaker
Welcome to the DIY Goalie podcast where hosts and goalie coaches Nathan Park and Connor Munday share their insights on how to become a better goalie.

Returning Post-Holidays and New Year Plans

00:00:18
Speaker
Goalies, welcome back to another episode of the DIY Goalie podcast presented by True North Goaltending. As always, you've got your host, Nathan Park, with you. I'm flying solo again today.
00:00:33
Speaker
um Just finally starting to get back to reality after the ah Christmas break, which sucks, as I'm sure a lot of you kind of... have the same sentiment that I do. I mean, you know, I had a bit of time off over the last kind of week or so, and now it sucks going back to reality and getting back to, you know, going to work, getting back to coaching, all that good stuff. But, I hope you guys had a good holiday season. I hope your new year so far has been good.
00:01:05
Speaker
Kind of crazy that we're already in 2026. But not only does that mean a new year, that means a new month as

Drill of the Month: Mindset and Mentality

00:01:14
Speaker
well. So we are going to go over a new drill of the month.
00:01:19
Speaker
um And then what I'm going to do from there is I'm going to kind of touch on a couple mindset things, um mentality sort of things. So we're going to go over kind of, you know, for younger goalies, those that are You know, just maybe starting to play club or or wanting to play club or are trying to kind of get to junior or all that stuff. Then we'll also kind of touch on some things for the adult ah goalies out there as well, playing beer league or rec league or whatever it is.
00:01:50
Speaker
um So because there's a little bit of a different approach for both groups. um And we try and do our best to kind of give, you know, actionable tips that any goalie at any age and skill level can use.
00:02:04
Speaker
Um, so, you know, we'll kind of dive into a few things on both sides there.

Virtual Goalie Sessions Promotion

00:02:10
Speaker
and So that's kind of what we have on the docket today. Just a reminder before we get started, if you guys do want to um hop on the special kind of soft launch pricing that we have going with our new virtual goalie sessions, um we will keep the link in the show notes there. um We've kind of done that the past couple weeks here, but... so We've had a few of those going and they have gone really well. So if that's something you guys are looking to do to add to your development plan, it's a really good price for some quality goalie coaching. And I know virtual kind of has a bit of a stigma to it, but I do promise that the ones we have done so far have gone really well. We have gotten lots of good feedback off of them. And so far, we really haven't had too many technical difficulties on that. So if that's something that you guys are interested in, you can fill out the form in the link in the show notes down below, whether you are on YouTube or Spotify, Apple Podcasts, it will be there.

Fun Drill: Blind Pass and Quick Shot

00:03:16
Speaker
um And yeah, we'd love to work with you wherever you are in the world because now we can do that.
00:03:22
Speaker
um So yeah, aside from that, um just getting into the drill of the month for this month. um So this one is kind of a fun drill. um It's a nice, easy, quick one to do.
00:03:37
Speaker
You do need two shooters for it or even a goalie and another shooter um can help too if you have a team with two goalies and you're running a goalie session. um But it's the through the net blind pass with shot.
00:03:52
Speaker
So how this one works is the pucks are set behind the net, um below the goal line there, and then you actually use a couple pucks. I usually use about three, kind of depends on the net you're using, but um I make two piles of three pucks and I prop them under the back of the net. So the back of the net is actually raised off the ice a little bit.
00:04:16
Speaker
um And what we're going to do with that is we're actually going to make a pass from behind the net under the net that's propped up. And that's how that's going to work. So the goalie who is in the net is actually going to be...
00:04:32
Speaker
Depending on where your shooter is, um your goalie is going to be top of the crease or maybe a little bit back from the top of the crease. It'll depend on age and skill level and location of the shooter. and But basically, they are going to be set facing the shooter that is somewhere kind of in the slot. um And that pass from behind the net is going to go under the net that we've propped up.
00:04:58
Speaker
It's going to go through the goalie's legs that is set and out to the shooter in the slot. And then that shooter is going to take a quick shot and the goalie has to make the save. And then you kind of play out the rebound from there. So it is a very simple drill, but it's a really good one for teaching goalies to kind of pick up the puck, be able to find the puck quickly and because the puck's coming from below them. They don't know when that pass is happening. All of a sudden it kind of zips through their legs, they got to i get their eyes on it as quick as possible and then kind of find it for the shot and play out the rebound. So it's a fun drill to do. um It's something different, something kind of, you know, exciting for the goalies. It's a good one to do maybe at the end of a practice to keep it fun um or even at the start of practice if you want to get the eyes going, but keep it light a little bit.
00:05:52
Speaker
um The other thing that I like too about this drill is because there's not a lot of constraints to it, it is kind of a free for all a little bit. So it helps that improvisation skills, um the ability to kind of,
00:06:05
Speaker
you know, get into position quick, find the puck quick, and then kind of just battle it out and keep the puck out from there. um So that's ah that's a good portion of ah of that drill too. So the big thing is just find the puck quick and then battle to get in front of it. Because sometimes depending on where the pass is, the shooter might have to adjust their angle a bit, which means the player, the goalie has to adjust um their angle a little bit too. So, just ah you can switch it up a little bit if you wanted to have the shooter kind of going back and forth um and the goalie has to adjust their position too once that pass goes to the ah the shooter. That can be something you can do as well. There's lots of fun different variations you can do. You can have the goalie start on their knees, you know, tap the stick. They have to hop up and then the pass comes or whatever it is. Get creative with it, guys. But um we will put that link in the show notes if you guys want to check out that drill on our website, along with a bunch of other drills at truenorthgoaltending.com slash

Instant Gratification vs. Trusting the Process

00:07:14
Speaker
drills. um You can find all that we have to offer there.
00:07:19
Speaker
So moving into kind of I guess, the meat and potatoes of things, um we're talking about some, I guess, shifts of mindset. So i wanted to come on and talk about this because this is something that I've seen from a handful of goalies um this season, both ones that we work with.
00:07:43
Speaker
and ones that we don't work with, but have kind of been talking to other goalie coaching providers and stuff like that. um There seems to be a bit of a shift, I find, and some of the athletes that we've been working with over the last um you know year or two, compared to, I know, like a lot of athletes Um, when we were playing like kind of myself, Connor, we're similar age. Um, I find that there seems to be,
00:08:19
Speaker
I don't know the best way to put it, but I guess a bit of, um, there's not as much of a focus, I guess, on full on development. So what I mean by that is part of kind of what we've seen with the TikToks and the YouTube Shorts and kind of the short form video content, as well as like the instant connection when it comes to social media, texting, all of that stuff. I find that the goalies that we're working with lately, um not all of them for sure, but there are quite a few that we are working with that seem to have trouble with trusting the process.
00:09:03
Speaker
and having there be kind of that delayed gratification. And I think a lot of that comes from, you know, we live in a world currently that everything is so on demand, everything is so instant. um I find that kids these days have a little bit more trouble of working through something on a longer term and sticking with it to see the results.
00:09:28
Speaker
And some of that, mindset, I guess, like we've worked with some of these goalies um that, you know, they maybe try to implement something for one or two reps when you're talking about it um and they're trying to adjust in a goalie session.
00:09:47
Speaker
And what ends up happening is when they don't see that immediate positive change within the first, you know, one to three kind of reps, they start to revert back to what they were doing before.
00:10:01
Speaker
And we've talked about it on the pod before, but as we all kind of know, all of us that have had years of playing the position, we all kind of have figured out that It's a long process to be able to get good at goaltending. It's a long process to you know work through developing good habits, kind of getting rid of bad habits. All of that stuff doesn't really happen over the course of one session or two sessions or even like a handful of sessions, depending on what you're working on.
00:10:37
Speaker
And I find a lot of goalies that we work with nowadays kind of struggle with working through that. um goaltending such a tough position because there is so little support for it that trying to stay um and kind of with the process, like trying to trust the process can be hard because it is something that you might not see full consistent results until you've been working on it for over a season or two seasons or or something like that, right?
00:11:11
Speaker
And I find that it's sometimes tough for goalies to, you know, work through that when there isn't immediate results. And that's kind of something too, like, I'm struggling with that with our six year old right now. Not necessarily when it comes to goaltending, cause he's just started to dabble and we haven't really taught him a whole lot yet.
00:11:36
Speaker
um But more so just kind of life in general, right? Like, You know, he's starting to figure out that when he first does things, he's not good at them, right? Because it's his first time or second time or third time doing it.
00:11:51
Speaker
And he struggles with that. And we've kind of been having these conversations where, you know, you got to keep working through, you got to keep practicing, you got to keep, you know, putting in the work, trusting the process. And that's how you get better at these things.
00:12:07
Speaker
um So that's a conversation and then a lesson that we're kind of trying to work through right now on our end anecdotally. But this is something I see too with the goalies we work with. And this kind of is goalies at all ages in the minor hockey level. Some are better than others with it, but it is that kind of instant gratification type mentality that I think is creeping into the world of of hockey and

Understanding Skill Development Timeframe

00:12:36
Speaker
goaltending. goal tending and it is causing some
00:12:40
Speaker
issues i guess so one thing that i wanted to talk about for you goalies that are still developing and this is also for the adult goalies too but i'm more so geared towards the younger kids because i think they're the ones that kind of struggle with this a little bit more but when you guys are working at getting better when you guys are putting in the work putting in the practice Understand that it is going to take a while and this can even be said to goalie parents too, right? Like you guys um need to understand that if you're sending,
00:13:18
Speaker
i i guess your goalie, if you're sending them to like a goalie camp or to a goalie session or anything like that, if you have a goalie coach coming out to your team,
00:13:30
Speaker
It's not going to fix all of the issues in one session. It's not going to fix it in two or five sessions. right it It is going to take a while. It takes a while to undo bad habits and it takes a while to establish new good habits.
00:13:46
Speaker
But the thing is, is I feel like a lot of goalies are giving up a little too early on some of these concepts because they don't stick right away. They don't show results right away. And the unfortunate part about it is, is you might have to have a transition period where you might see ah a bit of a dip in your performance to make the adjustments you need to do to get better.
00:14:11
Speaker
um As an example, my first year of Junior a um I was a 17 year old and it was kind of my first real, you know, legitimate broken down goalie coaching I had ever gotten.
00:14:26
Speaker
um I was 17, was in my first year of Junior A and it was the first time I had heard anyone talk about tracking a puck. So I wish I had known what I had known then about five to eight years earlier, but it is what it is.
00:14:41
Speaker
um But that whole season was very tough for me because not only was I trying to kind of stick it as 17 year old rookie goalie playing Junior, I was also trying to implement changes to my game that over the course of the rest of my career made significant improvements to my game.
00:15:04
Speaker
But it was tough to have that one season um of of down performance where I was trying to kind of figure out you know, the new better way to play compared to what I was playing before. So this was stuff like working on my hand positioning and straight lines to the puck, having my hands in front, tracking, trying to be better at efficiencies and positioning and all of that.
00:15:31
Speaker
A lot of times when you implement new things, you're slower. um You don't kind of immediately process or immediately react right away into that proper new way you're trying to work on and sometimes that can lead to us letting in bad goals sometimes we uh we second guess ourselves too like almost like double clutch like we go to do the old habit then we stop ourselves and then by then it's kind of too late um So I understand the frustration of going through this process and having a transitionary period. I understand the frustration of the potential of having a drop off in performance. It's not fun. It's not a good time.
00:16:17
Speaker
But sometimes it is necessary, kind of, you know, that cliche saying of short term pain for long term gain. Right. um It is one of those things that the more you can kind of keep your head down and trust the process and put in the work to make those changes, the more you'll kind of reap the rewards down the line.
00:16:40
Speaker
So I kind of wanted to get on about the just kind of that instant gratification mentality. If you guys are out there and you are struggling with implementing new things because you're not seeing results right away.
00:16:55
Speaker
Trust the process. That's the best thing I can do, because the quicker that you can get through that transition process and the earlier that you can start to establish new habits and better habits, the easier all of that will be for you. Right. When you like, it's easier for us as goalie coaches to establish new, better habits in an 11 year old goalie than in a 16 year old goalie that's been playing the extra five years has an extra five years of habits.
00:17:27
Speaker
It's harder to try and remold that 16 year old as opposed to the 11 year old. So the quicker you guys can kind of try and stick to um the process and try and implement new, good, consistent habits, the easier that it'll be for you. So the younger you are or kind of you know, the earlier in a season that you can write like.
00:17:52
Speaker
the quicker you can get through, the more you can apply yourself to the process, kind of the better you're off you're going to be in the long run. um So I just kind of want you guys to take that away and start thinking about, you know, for you younger goalies, how much do you actually want it? Right. Like how much do you want to get better? How much do you want to try and hit the highest level that you possibly can?

The Role of Self-Accountability in Training

00:18:18
Speaker
and If the answer truly is that you want to push yourself to get as far as you can, then you got to kind of put the head down, nose to the grindstone and just go through the process, make the changes you need to make and.
00:18:35
Speaker
it will, you'll, you'll get better eventually. Trust the process and work through it and keep doing what you need to do on that day-to-day basis. Like we've talked about before that 1% better each day, what can you be doing to kind of, you know, get yourself 1% closer to that goal?
00:18:54
Speaker
Um, just kind of building off of that on, uh, on the, I don't know, wanting to get better, or I guess trying to, um you know, trust the process. The other thing too, that I want to talk about for more so the younger goalies is kind of that accountability.
00:19:14
Speaker
um There are some goalies that we have kind of worked with that We can give them all the tools in the world and they have kind of a skill set that looks like they could do really well and have a successful career.
00:19:32
Speaker
But after they leave working with us or after they leave working with their strength and flexibility coach or whatever the case is, they kind of call that good. What i really implore you younger goalies to do, and this goes for all goalies, but especially if you're on the younger end and you're trying to get to the higher levels, you're trying to play club, double triple A, tripa you're trying to play junior, major, junior, college, pro, whatever the case is.
00:19:59
Speaker
you need to take the accountability to do stuff on your own as well. So us as goalie coaches, you can come see us for a session, we can work with you, we can make the tweaks that we need to make.
00:20:14
Speaker
But if you're not actively taking that to your own practice, because we all know goalies don't get very much support. So they go back to their own practice, all of a sudden,
00:20:24
Speaker
There's nobody there to kind of be in their ear about what you just learned at goalie session. And then everything kind of just goes back out the window. You come back to see us two weeks later and we just have to undo the habits that we just started last session. Right. So you need to start taking accountability. You need to start taking the onus on yourself to implement what's talked about.
00:20:49
Speaker
from all of your training providers. That could be a nutritionist, that could be a vision specialist, that could be a goalie coach, that could be a strength trainer, whatever the case is, you need to now take that accountability to implement the stuff on your own.
00:21:06
Speaker
So ask yourself, are you doing all that you need to be doing? Are you taking the five minutes that you get here and there at practice and working on skating drills or working on something you're weak on, like transitioning into and out of the overlap or into and out of the RVH or working on inside edge pushes or changing angles, mid push, stuff like that.
00:21:30
Speaker
Um, When you're at home, are you taking time out of your day to work on ball drills or to stretch or to watch game tape or video or whatever the case is? um What are you doing to make yourself better? And that's kind of one thing that we see a lot like when we work with goalies who are 12, 13, kind of basically up to 1820, like that window ah you know, the teenage years where you're starting to get to higher levels potentially and you're on the cusp of maybe making, you know, a major junior program or or maybe ah to go NCAA.
00:22:17
Speaker
Coaches talk and they will look for things like this. They will look for the accountability and the drive that you have. and even if you're not as good as another goalie if you have the drive to potentially push your ceiling higher than the other goalie a coach might take that into consideration depending on their situation right um the other thing though too is with that accountability is we talked about it kind of last week about getting out of our bubble but
00:22:51
Speaker
You don't know the work that other goalies are putting in, right? So how do you know that you're potentially getting better than they are? They could be putting in twice the amount of work you are.
00:23:03
Speaker
And, you know, you come to tryouts next season and all a sudden they're light years ahead. Well, How much did you take accountability for your own game and for getting better? Right. And so that's something to kind of keep in the back of your mind as well, because I do find there are a lot of the younger goalies that they're great when they're actually working with the provider, but then they take none of that and do anything on their own. They don't hold themselves accountable because we kind of talk about this when um like within our coaching group. Like we can only lead you to water. We can't make you drink kind of thing. So our goalies that we work with, we can give them as many tools as we can. But at the end of the day, they're the ones that have to go and implement it. And we can't really do much else from there. um So.
00:23:58
Speaker
Those are the two big things kind of for the younger goalies. um The accountability, holding yourself accountable. You are the one that's going to produce the results. You have to be the one to hold yourself accountable.
00:24:12
Speaker
Nobody else is going to want it as much as you do. And trust me, from the perspective of an actual um you know professional, like ah a goalie coach, and somebody who's actually working with the goalies and is there on an almost daily basis, um we will absolutely put in the work for the goalies that want to be there.

Adult Goalie Mindset: Improvement vs. Hobby

00:24:39
Speaker
But the ones that we can tell just are there because mom and dad said so, or are there to just put in the motions, um to not really want to take what we're applying with them outside of goalie sessions and stuff like that.
00:24:55
Speaker
we just, it's hard for us to want to have to go to that session or to do that session with that goalie. And a lot of times, you know, we're kind of like, well, why would I put in the effort if this goalie isn't going to put in the effort back kind of thing, right? So um we still go out and we still do the sessions, but it makes our job so much easier when we're you are engaged when you are holding yourself accountable and all that good stuff. So make sure that you guys are and having that personal accountability and then kind of like what we talked about before, just um trusting the process and not getting discouraged if you don't see results right away.
00:25:38
Speaker
um Shifting gears a little bit kind of to our older goalies, our adult goalies. um I kind of wanted to touch on this a little bit because I know like there are a lot of goalies that are in this situation where maybe they didn't get too much of a chance to play when they were younger, maybe because of financial reasons or geographical reasons or whatever other life circumstances um or maybe you're an adult goalie who played player when you were younger and whether because your parents wouldn't let you be a goalie or whatever the case was, maybe you just decided you wanted to switch it up and now you're playing goalie in your adult life.
00:26:23
Speaker
Or we've got lots of goalies too who, you know, didn't start playing until they were adults and maybe eventually worked their way to the goaltending side. um Whatever the case is for you,
00:26:37
Speaker
we tend to almost, I guess, get into a different mentality, different kind of mindset of things um when we're talking to our adult goalies. Because a lot of adult goalies This is kind of their, you know, swan song, right? Like some goalies never got an opportunity to play very competitively growing up.
00:27:04
Speaker
um Some goalies maybe never really had a chance to play on a championship team or whatever. And now we're at a stage where we're playing with our rec league team. We're playing with our beer league team.
00:27:16
Speaker
we want to actually have success and make a difference. And the one thing that I love about working with adult goalies is that they are the ones taking their own time and their own money to come out and do a goalie session. So they are there to learn. They are there to work.
00:27:34
Speaker
um the The conditioning varies drastically. and some Some guys can go through the hour one-on-one session and you know, be fine with it. Some guys, we have to do lot more breaks and talking, but so it is what it is. But the one thing that I think I see, well, I see that I think is kind of a hindrance on a lot of adult goalies is how much pressure, I guess, they kind of put on these games. And I totally get it. Like,
00:28:11
Speaker
We have a bit of a personal standard that we want to hit and we are very disappointed when we don't hit that standard. um So sometimes having not a great game or sometimes having a season where, you know, maybe we didn't make it as far as we wanted to in our playoffs, it can be very disappointing. And I've seen lots of goalies, like lots of adult goalies actually get to the point that they don't even want to play anymore because mentally they're struggling.
00:28:42
Speaker
And unfortunately, there's even less support at your level, at your age, because there isn't really any coaches. There really isn't any practice time either very much.
00:28:54
Speaker
um And because it's just like more so a hobby, quote unquote, right? like beer league and um rec league, men's league, whatever you want to call it, um a lot of people don't really, you know, it's kind of like, oh, whatever, it's beer league. It is what it is. Right.
00:29:13
Speaker
But for a lot of you guys out there that are adult goalies, that's kind of you know, what you have to play for. That's, you know, your level. That's where you're at and you want to have success at it. So the one thing that I would say for you guys is yes, it's it's good to care. It's good to want to do good. um All of that stuff. But what we do have to realize is we have to kind of take that step back and take that broader picture in and understand that this is more so something for fun to keep active, to kind of keep the competitive juices flowing. um
00:29:51
Speaker
At the end of the day, the sun's going to come up in the morning, regardless of what happens in the game the night before. So we want to make sure that we kind of have that mentality or that mindset of you know, being able to compartmentalize and to understand that goals will go in, to understand that men's league or rec league um D and systems are not good. So there's going to be lots of grading scoring chances against and you're going to get scored on and you're going to have bad games. You don't get practice time very much. I mean, if you do, kudos to you, but most rec league goalies out there don't get any practice time. Your time to practice is like your three minute warmup at the start of the game, right?
00:30:44
Speaker
um So understand that, that yes, we want to do well, but at the same time, there's really nothing like crazy on the line. We're not feeding our family with with our hockey earnings, right? um So we can go in a little bit more relaxed. We can go in and understand that getting scored on is okay. Getting scored on is the point of hockey, right? Like hockey is meant to score goals, so goals are going to happen.
00:31:15
Speaker
understand that that's okay we can reset focus on the next shot focus on the next game whatever the case is and have some fun with it i think a lot of us and this goes for all ages and all skill levels a lot of us sometimes get caught up too much in the daily grind that we don't kind of see the bigger picture we or we forget why we are doing it in the first place. We forget how fun it is to make saves, how fun it is to absolutely rob somebody. We forget why we're out there in the first place to kind of you know get the heart rate up, get the competitive juices up, to do something that we love and that we enjoy.
00:31:58
Speaker
And so I think sometimes we get a little too focused on the results and can kind of struggle with that mentally a little bit.

um The other thing, and we've kind of talked, we've had episodes on on this before when it comes to the auto goalies and how we can find extra ice time to work on things.
00:32:20
Speaker
um But even if you don't have that time to work on things on the ice, just breaking down like video of pros or other goalies, or even doing like some strength and flexibility stuff off the ice. If you don't have access to a lot of on a stuff as an adult goalie, there's a bunch of stuff off the ice you can do to kind of keep getting better to improve your skillset.
00:32:49
Speaker
Um, I also understand too that sometimes with the adult goalies, we don't have a lot of like pregame prep time sometimes. um It entirely depends on your league and where you're playing and the rank you're at and all that.
00:33:06
Speaker
If you don't have the time and or the space to do your warm up before the game at the rank, then carve out some time and some space at home to do something. um For sure, get a stretch in. That's an important one. um But even just anything to get you into that right mindset, it's going to be different for everybody. But a certain playlist, a certain stretching routine, like me um personally, this was back when I played junior in college. So I was at the rink two hours before. But when I was at the rink, I would do a stretching routine with my playlist in. And a lot of the stretches I would sit in for five to 10 minutes.
00:33:50
Speaker
um So like the butterfly stretch, I would lay down eyes closed. I'd stay in that butterfly stretch. And with my music going, I would kind of visualize some saves. Same thing, I do the one where I was laying on the ground and my um Legs would be up on the wall, kind of spread out to each side. Same thing. i would just have my eyes closed. I'd lay there for like 10 minutes in the stretch and just kind of start prepping myself.
00:34:16
Speaker
um I would do some ball work after I got my lower half of my gear on. um So that those are kind of the things. um Again, if you can't do that at the rink, do it at home before you go to the rink. um I feel like the mentality around um rec league is kind of a little bit, oh, it's just rec league. Like, why are you taking it so seriously?
00:34:45
Speaker
But for you guys out there that that kind of irks you, I'm here to validate you a little bit. um I understand that. you know, that could be the perspective of somebody else, but a lot of you guys do have a lot of passion and a lot of care for your performance in rec league. um So all the power to you guys, I know this is kind of what you're playing for now, this is what you're in in the moment, so you still wanna do good at it.
00:35:15
Speaker
um So take that time to prep properly. If you wanna put in the work and have success at that level, put in, or I guess, like we talked about before, it's a process, right? Like kind of do what you need to do to have the success that you can have at the level that you're playing and take some pride in it, but also understand that it's a balance and we don't want to make it the be all end all of how we do in beer league. So long winded way of putting it, but
00:35:52
Speaker
That mentality when it comes to rec league hockey, we mostly just want to have that balanced approach of, yes, I want to put in the work and get better. And yes, this is what I'm playing for right now.
00:36:04
Speaker
But at the same time, I need to recognize that it's a game and it's still kind of, you know, a thing on the side to have some fun, a little bit of a hobby kind of thing. So we can't have it kind of overrun.
00:36:20
Speaker
our mentality and kind of consume us because we are just so obsessed over how we're playing and, and, um, what success or a lack thereof that we're having. Right. Um, so a good balance there, do what you need to do to prep properly, to get better, to develop.
00:36:40
Speaker
But at the end of the day, just understand that there are other things aside from hockey and we don't have to be you know, too hung up on how we
