The Power of Intention
00:00:17
Speaker
On today's episode, we talk about the power of intention.
00:00:21
Speaker
We discuss ways to bring about our intentions to help us focus on the things that are important to us.
00:00:28
Speaker
How do vision boards work?
00:00:30
Speaker
Are goals the same thing as intentions?
00:00:32
Speaker
And how do we make ourselves happier?

Hosts' Gratitude Sharing
00:00:39
Speaker
Welcome to Stay Sparked.
00:00:41
Speaker
We are three old friends who have been sharing our inspiring stories with one another for a decade, and now we are sharing those tales and inspirations with you.
00:00:57
Speaker
And we like to start each of our conversations with a little bit of gratitude.
00:01:02
Speaker
Betsy, what are you feeling grateful for today?
00:01:09
Speaker
I actually, I'm grateful for gratitude.
00:01:13
Speaker
The last few weeks, I have been participating in a 21-day gratitude affirmation group.
00:01:21
Speaker
where there's about 30 of us on this messaging thread where each of us share our gratitude every day, kind of similar to your healthy and your gratitude groups on Zoom.
00:01:32
Speaker
There's just something so powerful.
00:01:33
Speaker
I feel like it just amplifies when people are sharing their gratitude.
00:01:37
Speaker
So it's a really fun practice and I am really grateful for gratitude.
00:01:44
Speaker
That makes me so happy to hear and totally agree with you, man.
00:01:47
Speaker
Group gratitude is the best.
00:01:50
Speaker
Yannis, what are you grateful for?
00:01:53
Speaker
That strikes me as like a gratitude inception kind of thing happening.
00:01:59
Speaker
It's like a Taurus or yin-yang symbol of gratitude goes in and a half of itself.
00:02:05
Speaker
I am grateful for, as I mentioned before, clarity.
00:02:12
Speaker
Like, you know, it's easy to just kind of sleepwalk through life without really knowing you're sleepwalking through life and maybe not a full sleepwalker, not like a zombie, but just in certain areas of your life, they're just kind of on cruise control and you're maybe not giving it a lot of thought, but, you know, having, having those moments of like, you know, crystal clear clarity, um,
00:02:31
Speaker
are really potent and being like, oh, wow, OK, this is like this is what's going on here.
00:02:35
Speaker
This is what I need to do or whatever.
00:02:37
Speaker
So I'm kind of been in that moment of late and be feeling very grateful for it.
00:02:44
Speaker
Speaking of clarity and gratitude, my gratitude this week is how.
00:02:51
Speaker
For the clarity that a pain episode has given me, I've been in some really extreme pain for three weeks now due to a pinched nerve.
00:03:01
Speaker
And while it has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life, as it has subsided a little, I have a renewed baseline of gratitude where I now feel like I'm
00:03:15
Speaker
it doesn't require anything for me to feel grateful now that, that just nothing, a moment without pain is now a treasured moment.
00:03:25
Speaker
And, and, and that recalibration has really helped me to be grateful in a way that I never felt before.
00:03:31
Speaker
So I'm, I'm going from cursing my, my experience to gratitude for that experience of, for the experience of pain.
00:03:42
Speaker
And I am going to, uh,
00:03:46
Speaker
Think forward, imagine, and have a vision for a pain-free future because our topic today is about intentions and visioning and readjusting our sales to a future that we want.
Setting and Importance of Intentions
00:04:03
Speaker
And so I wanted to first see if, Betsy, if you could give us a little why is making intentions and having intentions helpful and important?
00:04:16
Speaker
Well, I know personally, I have not always been a very intentional person.
00:04:21
Speaker
When I was in my younger years, I didn't even really know what that word meant.
00:04:26
Speaker
And I would just go through life just doing the thing that I'm supposed to do.
00:04:31
Speaker
And it wasn't until I really started to go on a journey of personal growth and development and start to do certain things like go to Burning Man or do plant medicine ceremonies or personal growth workshops and trainings and start to do women's circles.
00:04:47
Speaker
I started to learn about intention and about how to implement more intentional practices into my daily life, whether that might just be journaling or just clarifying what it is that I want.
00:05:02
Speaker
Vision boards also, you know, here we are at the beginning of the new year.
00:05:05
Speaker
It's always a powerful time of making vision boards.
00:05:08
Speaker
Once I started to do that, I started to notice how much more graceful I was able to move through the world because I was having much more clarity coming through.
00:05:18
Speaker
Like you were saying, Yonis, your gratitude was for clarity, right?
00:05:22
Speaker
If I don't know what I want, then I feel like I'm just kind of going aimlessly through the world.
00:05:29
Speaker
But having an intention practice has been absolutely game changer, whether it is the micro of living with intention, like having a conversation right as you start the conversation, get clear.
00:05:40
Speaker
What is the intention that I have for this conversation?
00:05:42
Speaker
Okay, my intention is I would like to have some deeper connection with this person.
00:05:48
Speaker
Or on a bigger scale, what is my intention for my life going forward?
00:05:53
Speaker
My intention is to continue to stay healthy, right?
00:05:57
Speaker
And then what ends up happening with those intentions, then the actions and the words and the thoughts then can help to support what those intentions are.
00:06:05
Speaker
My bigger life intention is to stay well, but I'm going to be
00:06:10
Speaker
making sure that I'm eating well, that I'm moving my body, that I am doing these things that can support that.
00:06:16
Speaker
Or if it's the, you know, the conversation to have more connection, then I am going to orient my words and my body language in a way that will support that intention for more connectivity.
00:06:27
Speaker
Man, I am so glad that you are here, Betsy.
00:06:31
Speaker
I mean, witnessing your relationship to your practices of intention has really helped me kind of overcome some skepticism about these type of things.
00:06:44
Speaker
And I really had to acknowledge that, you know, you mentioned the grace that you go through the world and witnessing that and witnessing how much of
00:06:53
Speaker
You know, setting intentions and being conscious about those things and witnessing you do that has really helped me to raise the importance of that.
00:07:03
Speaker
And as you're speaking, I realized that, you know, that I now do a morning broadcast every day at nine for Love Ambassadors.
00:07:11
Speaker
And really, it's intention setting.
00:07:13
Speaker
It is like, who...
00:07:16
Speaker
And how do I want to be every day?
00:07:18
Speaker
Every day, to me, I want to be a love ambassador.
00:07:21
Speaker
I want to look for the opportunities to connect with people.
00:07:24
Speaker
I want to look for the opportunities to share gifts and be kind.
00:07:27
Speaker
And the way that I've been thinking about it, I hadn't really connected even to the word intention until you said that, is that my objective is to
00:07:37
Speaker
prep my brain so that when opportunities come, I already know what the choice is going to be.
00:07:44
Speaker
So if I have the opportunity to be kind, I don't spend any, I don't miss the opportunity because I, Oh, what should I do now?
00:07:52
Speaker
I, the intention is the already, I've already made the decision when the intention is made, how I'm going to react to an opportunity when it comes.
Intentions vs. Goals
00:08:02
Speaker
And it's, it's important to,
00:08:06
Speaker
Delineate the difference between intention and goal setting because goals are more of a destination.
00:08:13
Speaker
Intention is more of a journey.
00:08:16
Speaker
It's more, it's more close, closely aligned with mindfulness as opposed to a goal achievement.
00:08:22
Speaker
And so, yeah, so making that decision to, to operate with intention is,
00:08:26
Speaker
Like you said, the decision has already been made when an opportunity presents itself and it's like you have already decided like this is who I'm going to be in this situation because that is your intention that you have set for yourself.
00:08:39
Speaker
So, yeah, so listening to you both.
00:08:43
Speaker
kind of is a reminder to me to that.
00:08:47
Speaker
I've, I've had moments in life where I've been very intentional and those, those, that kind of that way of moving through life is, is fairly rewarding and just in and of itself, it just feels good at the end of the day to have, uh,
00:09:02
Speaker
You know, to have met your intentions, to have walked your path with intention.
00:09:08
Speaker
And yeah, and you know the difference.
00:09:10
Speaker
Once you start doing it or when you get back to doing it after not doing it, the way you feel, the way I feel at the end of the day is substantially better.
00:09:19
Speaker
It feels like I've actually...
00:09:21
Speaker
you know, ironically enough, I can achieve something like I'm not trying to achieve goals with that.
00:09:26
Speaker
But it feels I feel a sense of achievement at the end of the day.
00:09:30
Speaker
So yeah, yeah, intentions are good.
00:09:34
Speaker
And also on the flip side, too.
00:09:36
Speaker
I've also had experience when there is a lack of intention, and how that can create some chaos.
00:09:42
Speaker
I've been in different situations where it's like, what are we doing here?
00:09:46
Speaker
What are we creating here?
00:09:47
Speaker
There's no leadership and there's no collective intention around what it is that we're creating.
00:09:51
Speaker
And then all of a sudden it just turns into this kind of shit show.
00:09:56
Speaker
And so, yeah, exactly.
00:09:59
Speaker
And so that was always just a good reminder to keep coming back to just even simplest way of like unifying with the breath.
00:10:07
Speaker
You know, that is a powerful way of connecting to an intention that I feel like
00:10:11
Speaker
The breath can be an intention to center.
00:10:15
Speaker
It can be a living as an embodiment of some kind of intention.
Celestial Influence on Intentions
00:10:19
Speaker
So yeah, there's that.
00:10:21
Speaker
And then also I want to just kind of recognize how this time of year, whatever time of year you're listening to this, but we're recording this right after the new year.
00:10:30
Speaker
And it's a very powerful time where there's a collective attention on intention.
00:10:36
Speaker
you know, there's many gatherings of vision board creation and people are asking, what's your word of the year?
00:10:44
Speaker
And, you know, a lot of intention setting, what are your, um, what are you wanting to aspire to this year?
00:10:50
Speaker
And I love that so much because there is a lot of good energy that comes when there's collective attention.
00:10:57
Speaker
And also one of the things I really value is listening to the, um,
00:11:02
Speaker
The celestial guidance, the astrological pinpoints that help us to set intentions, right?
00:11:09
Speaker
The new moon, for example, is a monthly opportunity to get clear about what it is that we're setting intentions for, right?
00:11:16
Speaker
The farmers would plant seeds.
00:11:20
Speaker
And that is also a really powerful time, metaphorically speaking, to plant our own seeds.
00:11:25
Speaker
And so I personally have really enjoyed the practice of having that cyclical experience of getting clear about what my intentions are, and then starting to then break it down even to more daily intentions and checking back in around what was my intention last month.
00:11:41
Speaker
and then coming back around and seeing where have i actually been either continuing to stay committed to that intention or where have i been slipping or to being distracted i'm using it as sort of like uh these pillars to help keep me in line with why i'm here on this planet right because otherwise then i might be just kind of flailing around yeah yeah and it's uh
00:12:05
Speaker
And then, you know, and I understand that there's some people who are like, they hear the word astrological and they immediately like, if not check out, but just kind of like, there's a little bit of an eye roll that might, that might happen.
00:12:16
Speaker
But I really feel there's something to be said.
00:12:18
Speaker
I think the best way to frame it for me, uh, I'm not one of those people, but it's, it's, it's, uh, that, that rolls my eyes at stuff like that.
00:12:26
Speaker
I mean, there's just enough evidence for me that is like, you know, I don't, I don't need it proven to me.
00:12:32
Speaker
But it's just a framework for us to, it is a framework for us to hang our intentions on.
00:12:37
Speaker
Like, what do I want to bring in to my life?
00:12:39
Speaker
What is my intentions for the next 28 days?
00:12:42
Speaker
Let's say, which would be a full phase of the moon.
00:12:46
Speaker
And you can, you know,
00:12:48
Speaker
choosing that or choosing a year like what for you know for this year from this or this season what have you uh for me it puts me it helps me feel like i'm more in the flow with nature and i've got nature on my side to bring these things about to to get me to to where i want to be or just to to allow me to walk you know my path with with natural support shall you say and it's whatever you believe like i talked to
00:13:18
Speaker
I talked to somebody who fancied herself a witch once, and she was talking about how she does certain things.
00:13:24
Speaker
I'm like, how do you know this works for you?
00:13:28
Speaker
How does it work for you?
00:13:28
Speaker
She's like, it works because I believe it works.
00:13:31
Speaker
And it was like, and just looking around at her life, it was like, you couldn't really argue with the results.
00:13:36
Speaker
It's like, she was really, she was living, living pretty, pretty, pretty high.
00:13:41
Speaker
And, um, and it was all, you know, she, she got, she created it all.
00:13:45
Speaker
It was like, nothing was gifted to her.
00:13:46
Speaker
She made it all happen.
00:13:48
Speaker
And so that was a, that was a first, like, you know,
00:13:52
Speaker
first moment for me realizing like, wow, people, you know, setting intentions, vision boarding, what have you, like there's something to that practice that helps us stay in alignment with what our values are, what we're looking to experience in this world.
00:14:05
Speaker
Well, as one who is farther down the eye roll spectrum, I am appreciating that as we're talking here, you know, intentionality is
00:14:17
Speaker
can be totally and completely outside of any woo-woo.
00:14:22
Speaker
Cause I mean, there's like a company, you know, a project has a mission statement.
00:14:27
Speaker
You know, you have a, that, that you, you, what you all agree, what is the intention of this company?
00:14:32
Speaker
We are trying to invert, you know, raise the level of bump up a book.
00:14:37
Speaker
And you have to really be in agreement on your intention so that,
00:14:42
Speaker
you know the direction you're heading and you can know that you're in alignment and you're not getting distracted.
00:14:47
Speaker
And the same is true with your personal goals or direction of your year or your month or even of this
Podcast's Intention and Vision Boarding
00:14:56
Speaker
Would you be comfortable, Betsy, sharing?
00:14:58
Speaker
You know, you kind of set our intentions before every episode.
00:15:00
Speaker
What's the intention of the show?
00:15:04
Speaker
A little peek behind the curtain for our listeners out there.
00:15:08
Speaker
Before we start recording, we do a little meditation and we ground ourselves and we remind ourselves and each other of the intention for being here.
00:15:18
Speaker
And our intention, as the title says, stay sparked, is we are here to share sparks of inspiration for those out there who may be able to receive them.
00:15:27
Speaker
And really, that's what this is about, sharing inspiration.
00:15:31
Speaker
And that directs a lot of our conversation.
00:15:34
Speaker
We always try to stay within that rhythm and that flow of spreading sparks because that's what we're here to do.
00:15:42
Speaker
So if the intention was something different, then we wouldn't be in these kinds of conversations.
00:15:48
Speaker
We would be directing it in different ways, but having that overarching or that pinpoint on the horizon, it keeps us on that path.
00:15:59
Speaker
And it helps shape our conversations because there are times when we're discussing the topic and you often will will bring us back.
00:16:07
Speaker
Well, how is this in alignment with our intention?
00:16:10
Speaker
And I think that's so helpful.
00:16:12
Speaker
We're not just here to vent about some grief or problem.
00:16:16
Speaker
Like, how do we align an idea towards our intention?
00:16:21
Speaker
I really think that's helpful in so many aspects of our lives.
00:16:26
Speaker
Intentions operate as a North star in our life.
00:16:29
Speaker
It kind of keeps us focused, keeps us moving in the direction that we want to be going, the eyes on the prize, so to speak.
00:16:36
Speaker
I wanted to also bring up, Betsy, you mentioned vision boarding before.
00:16:42
Speaker
And I wanted to just touch on this briefly.
00:16:44
Speaker
I think a lot of people know what that's about.
00:16:46
Speaker
But I wanted to just kind of hear about you guys, hear from your guys' experiences on that.
00:16:54
Speaker
And Halcyon, pop quiz.
00:16:56
Speaker
Have you ever done a vision board?
00:16:58
Speaker
I have never done a vision board and I'm glad you brought this up because that's the next thing I had in my notes, because I think that there's a, before we get into it, well, let me just see.
00:17:07
Speaker
And you can correct me, but to me, I feel like there's a very significant difference between intention setting, which is heading in a direction and vision boarding, which seems is a concrete visual of some place that you want to land.
00:17:23
Speaker
So I have an aversion to,
00:17:25
Speaker
to specifically saying like, I want a mansion with a big pool because it feels, uh, I don't know.
00:17:32
Speaker
I'm scared of, of having too specific a, a goal.
00:17:36
Speaker
Um, and so I'm a little, it, I don't know if I'm afraid of failing or I'm, I'm, I would, I, I want to make sure that the, that my intentions and directions are towards feelings more than anything physical in the world.
00:17:52
Speaker
But, uh, I would love to hear the,
00:17:55
Speaker
your, your guys' perspectives and why vision boarding is a helpful tool.
00:18:03
Speaker
I know I'm cracking up over here because we're on the opposite sides.
00:18:07
Speaker
I've made so many vision boards and it's such an amazing practice.
00:18:12
Speaker
I love it so much on so many different levels.
00:18:13
Speaker
And I'd love to speak to some of the skepticism and some of that little bit of fear around like putting that physical item on there and, you know,
00:18:21
Speaker
I'm sure we've probably all seen the secret, you know, there's this whole thing about manifesting.
00:18:26
Speaker
But for me, it's there's a much deeper practice than just trying to bring into my life physical items like a car or a house or different physical things.
00:18:38
Speaker
There's a certain tone that comes through art that can help to really fine tune my feelings.
00:18:48
Speaker
So I actually was just making vision boards last night with my roommate and we were in this process of going through magazines and seeing what words stand out.
00:18:59
Speaker
right there's all this text on in magazines and it's really interesting to see which words pop out and we just start cutting out for like an hour we're just cutting out a bunch of words just tons of different words which ones really resonate and then we laid out all the words and looked and so like wow this is where my subconscious mind is starting to feel really attracted what am i actually
00:19:21
Speaker
What is about these words, right?
00:19:23
Speaker
And so some of the words that were coming through were really insightful.
00:19:27
Speaker
And I feel like the words that we put on there and that we keep them in our space can help to just infuse our subconscious mind to have more of that, to cultivate the feeling tone on the inside.
00:19:42
Speaker
I know for me personally, a lot of my vision boards are not necessarily for one specific year because it's an overarching feeling.
00:19:51
Speaker
I put certain words on there like upward spiral and health and vitality and love and...
00:19:57
Speaker
community and magic and all of these words that just make me feel so good.
00:20:02
Speaker
It's kind of in a way, another way of using affirmations, you know, and then also the imagery then can reflect certain things.
00:20:10
Speaker
And you're right, Halcyon, because you do have to be really careful because some of this stuff really does manifest.
00:20:17
Speaker
in ways that you would not expect it to.
00:20:19
Speaker
So you have to be really refined on certain things.
00:20:23
Speaker
I had a pretty crazy manifestation a few years ago where I didn't even realize that I had called in this experience.
00:20:32
Speaker
And then I went back and I looked at my vision board.
00:20:33
Speaker
I was like, Oh my God, there that is.
00:20:37
Speaker
Even just last night, I was looking at my old vision board and this was two years ago.
00:20:42
Speaker
There was a picture of a beautiful tree on my vision board in front of this big, beautiful house I was calling in a new home.
00:20:51
Speaker
And I said, believe anything is possible.
00:20:53
Speaker
Well, right outside my house, there's that same type of tree, big, beautiful tree.
00:20:59
Speaker
And like, whoa, there it is.
00:21:01
Speaker
And so there is something to be said about being able to really...
00:21:06
Speaker
bring those images into your being and also i feel like there it just creates an energetic frequency inside of you to be able to keep staying attuned to does that make sense yeah yeah yeah it makes yeah it makes a lot of sense and uh it just it for me vision boarding i've only really done it a handful of times over the course of my life but it has allowed me to kind of
00:21:35
Speaker
operate at the frequency that I want to operate on that feels good to me.
00:21:44
Speaker
I've used it before to focus on maybe acquiring specific things, like a car, for example.
00:21:52
Speaker
Um, but that allows me to, that has allowed me to one, like get, get the car I wanted, which I will touch on.
00:21:59
Speaker
Well, I'll touch on for a second.
00:22:00
Speaker
Cause it's kind of funny.
00:22:01
Speaker
And also just to kind of start living my life in a way that would allow this thing to come in.
00:22:05
Speaker
So it's not like I'm just expecting putting my vision on or, you know, cutting out a photo and putting it on or cutting out words and just expecting it to happen.
00:22:13
Speaker
It allows me to, it gives, it gives me, you know, kind of a, it
00:22:17
Speaker
intention to walk in the world in ways that bring these things in.
Vision Boards and Real-life Manifestations
00:22:24
Speaker
And I've had pretty positive experiences with that.
00:22:26
Speaker
And there was one time I did want a fancy car, nothing too fancy, but a very specific type and color of car.
00:22:34
Speaker
And so I went on the internet and I found the color of this car, found the exact car I wanted.
00:22:39
Speaker
I cut it out and I'm putting it on this board.
00:22:41
Speaker
And then I just had this voice in my head that was like,
00:22:44
Speaker
maybe you should spend less time cutting out pictures of what you want and actually put some action towards getting what you want.
00:22:50
Speaker
I just, this very idea just came rushing in.
00:22:54
Speaker
After I just pasted it on this board.
00:22:56
Speaker
And so I just went back to my computer, back on the browser and went and found out where that car was at, which happened to be, there was only two of these cars in me that were for sale in the entire country.
00:23:06
Speaker
One was in Arizona and one was just up the road from me in Orange County, which was the exact picture of the car that I had actually cut out with was the one in Orange County.
00:23:14
Speaker
And three days later, I had this car in my driveway and the exact one that I cut the picture out of and was like,
00:23:20
Speaker
Oh, if I hadn't had that intention, like I hadn't, if I hadn't given attention to the vision board and just had the idea, like this is something I wanted, you know, I might not have ever gotten that car.
00:23:30
Speaker
And that's just, this is one, one tiny example of, you know, kind of the power of that, at least for me.
00:23:38
Speaker
And so I also wanted to touch on housing.
00:23:42
Speaker
Maybe this is something you're going to lead to.
00:23:44
Speaker
But I wanted to ask you how this, how, let's say the power of, of,
00:23:50
Speaker
vision boarding or intention goes with or against your one of your pink philosophies uh the pink path philosophies of the love more fearless float more steer less philosophy you know i have the idea of i would incorporate i i sum it up as being like yeah just let let the let the let the ship let your ship just kind of go and you might be you might be pleasantly surprised where you end up at if you just
00:24:15
Speaker
stop gripping the wheel so tightly um so how does intention and and things like that jive with that uh philosophy i love you bringing that up because that's exactly my head is spinning around right now and and i and i love your
00:24:28
Speaker
your story of the car, because I think that that is helping my eye rolling, you know, not happen because your story, this intention setting, this vision boarding, it's really just kind of giving your mind, if you, you know, purely on a, on a thoughts and minds and consciousness basis, it, it, it,
00:24:53
Speaker
It's allowing you to make choices towards the goal that you have.
00:24:58
Speaker
So, you know, you're not just floating and allowing the universe to float you to it.
00:25:02
Speaker
You, you, what we're going to do in your next moment.
00:25:04
Speaker
Oh, I'm going to reach out to that person or something, some opportunity comes to you and you know, which choice is towards that car and which choice is away from that car.
00:25:16
Speaker
And until you put the car as the intention, um, you, you,
00:25:21
Speaker
you don't have that clarity on what choice is in the direction of your intention.
00:25:25
Speaker
I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well, but in my mind, I'm like, Oh, this is making a lot more sense to me.
00:25:30
Speaker
Um, as far as float more steer less, uh, it's, I think that, that it, I use it as a way of, of double checking, you know, if you decide that you want a certain car and then it's just, you, you keep getting, you
00:25:52
Speaker
obstacle, obstacle, obstacle, there's maybe the current is taking you towards something else and that you can use your energy a lot better if you are swimming in the direction of the current.
00:26:04
Speaker
So floating more doesn't mean doing nothing and allowing things passively to happen to you.
00:26:09
Speaker
It means trying to tune into a deeper current that's happening and using that to your advantage.
Balancing Intention with Action
00:26:17
Speaker
And I think that it's a real balance thing.
00:26:18
Speaker
I think that's one of the big struggles in a lot of spiritual journeys is discerning, you know, how much do I allow versus how much do I make happen?
00:26:31
Speaker
And I think people are often afraid that if you let go of your shoulds, you'll actually do nothing.
00:26:38
Speaker
And one of the big obstacles to like the power of now is like, well, or Byron Katie, like loving reality.
00:26:43
Speaker
Well, if I love reality, then I'll just sit on the couch and do nothing.
00:26:46
Speaker
Like, no, that's not how it works.
00:26:48
Speaker
You know, if you actually can get so peaceful that you can tune into the current, you will do something next.
00:26:56
Speaker
And it will be in the direction of your intentions, of the way that you want to be.
00:27:03
Speaker
And so to me, the float more steer less is more about, you
00:27:08
Speaker
of that discernment of, you know, am I forcing my way towards something or, or am I, am I working with the current?
00:27:16
Speaker
And I, the way that you guys are helping me see, um, they work together, you know, having an intention and tuning into the current that's heading you towards that.
00:27:27
Speaker
Well, you'll know when you are paddling towards what you want and when you're not.
00:27:33
Speaker
And I think the other part of that is in, you got to check back and go, well,
00:27:37
Speaker
this idea of what I wanted, I keep having to check back and go, is that still accurate?
00:27:45
Speaker
Or when I had that desire, was it influenced by some aspect of external shoulds?
00:27:52
Speaker
You know, like, wait a minute, actually, I think the real reason that I wanted that car is because I saw my dad, you know, like be impressed by that car when I was a kid.
00:28:04
Speaker
And so maybe that's not what I really want.
00:28:06
Speaker
What I really want is to feel impressive.
00:28:09
Speaker
So now when we retune into the current, what's the actual desired outcome?
00:28:16
Speaker
And that desired outcome could be in a Prius because I will be impressive amongst my friends that care about energy, something like that.
00:28:30
Speaker
I bet back in the day, my, my, I was impressed by the sexy car, but what's in sexy, sexy to me these days is like 45 miles a gallon.
00:28:38
Speaker
Oh, I feel you on that.
00:28:40
Speaker
So, uh, Betsy, I wanted to ask you and take kind of take on what housing was saying.
00:28:45
Speaker
The idea of like, if my intention is just to be, I want to be happy.
00:28:50
Speaker
I just want to be happy.
00:28:53
Speaker
Is that, is that, is that enough to help us live a life of, of live the life of our dreams, the life we want?
00:29:01
Speaker
Is that enough of an intention, um, to, to move forward with?
00:29:06
Speaker
Do we need to be more specific?
00:29:07
Speaker
What do you, what are your, what's your take on, on that?
00:29:10
Speaker
I just, you know, I have a few thoughts on that.
00:29:14
Speaker
It's wonderful to be happy.
00:29:16
Speaker
And it's unrealistic to think that we're going to be happy all the time because we are emotional beings and we have many, many different emotions and it's always changing.
00:29:26
Speaker
I think it's powerful to set an intention to have more balance in our emotional state, right?
00:29:33
Speaker
It's very healthy to have, you know, happiness in our lives, you know, to aspire to have greater states of happiness is definitely a powerful intention.
00:29:44
Speaker
Especially if we're not feeling good a lot.
00:29:47
Speaker
And I think that having that intention, starting the day, for example, with an intention, I have a journal that is specifically for intention setting.
00:29:57
Speaker
And so it is, okay, say my intention is
00:30:01
Speaker
to feel happy today.
00:30:03
Speaker
Okay, that is great.
00:30:04
Speaker
That's a great intention.
00:30:05
Speaker
And then we go back to cable then.
00:30:07
Speaker
Well, what action steps am I going to take to help to cultivate more oxytocin and dopamine and serotonin in my body?
00:30:16
Speaker
You can't just be like, I'm setting the intention to be happy today, but then like grumble about all the things that aren't going well, you know, or be frustrated about whatever it might be, right?
00:30:27
Speaker
Is that balance and co-creation
00:30:30
Speaker
with, uh, with the universe, with our higher selves, whatever you want to call it.
00:30:33
Speaker
I feel like that action that you took to go get that car is an essential part, you know, to be happy.
00:30:39
Speaker
Then I get to take action towards doing the things that help me feel happy.
00:30:45
Speaker
I can tell personally on my own, cause that is one of my intentions as well to be joyful and allow joy to guide a lot of my life.
00:30:54
Speaker
And I can feel if there's things that are like, a little crunchy, then it's like, oh, okay.
00:31:02
Speaker
I need to go outside and get some sunshine.
00:31:04
Speaker
I haven't had sunshine in a while, or I need to move my body.
00:31:08
Speaker
I haven't danced in like days.
00:31:10
Speaker
That usually doesn't happen very often because that is like quite one of my core vitamins is dance and movement, right?
00:31:16
Speaker
What are these things that I'm doing every day to help to keep living with that intention in mind, those, those action steps.
00:31:24
Speaker
to help to support the intention.
00:31:27
Speaker
I think that, that, that the idea of, I just want to be happy is, is a good start, but you really need to, to practice and seek and look for what are those things?
00:31:40
Speaker
You know, what are the things that make you happy?
00:31:42
Speaker
Um, because other, if we don't give some thought and do some work on figuring out what those things are, you will, you can slip into, um,
00:31:52
Speaker
societal definitions of or stories about what makes you happy.
00:31:56
Speaker
And that often is not true.
00:31:58
Speaker
You know, so as you are describing, you know, your your actions of happiness, Betsy, you know, like you're really clear, you know, outside movement, there's all these things that you know, are a part of your recipe for happiness.
00:32:11
Speaker
So an intentional life in that of these these actions and activities and experiences is your recipe for happiness.
00:32:19
Speaker
I had someone this morning asked me,
00:32:23
Speaker
Could I give up all this, I mean, all the online stuff that I'm doing?
00:32:27
Speaker
Could I be happy if I gave it all up?
00:32:29
Speaker
And I was like, well,
00:32:32
Speaker
I know that for me to be happy, I need to be of service in some way.
00:32:38
Speaker
And I think we all do in some degrees that we need to find a way to be a love ambassador in some way, to be of service to the world.
00:32:46
Speaker
So I think I could totally be happy giving all this up, but not in – I couldn't just do nothing.
00:32:52
Speaker
Doing nothing – I couldn't just be happy in a bubble.
00:32:56
Speaker
I know that for me to be happy, there has to be some sort of service.
00:33:00
Speaker
So I could shift away from online and do more coaching and more.
00:33:06
Speaker
I would have to figure what those things are.
00:33:08
Speaker
But there is a recipe required.
00:33:12
Speaker
Happiness in and out of itself is not enough of an intention to be helpful to me, I would think.
00:33:19
Speaker
It sounds like service is a bigger intention for your life.
00:33:22
Speaker
You know, that service is like a big, you know, guiding force.
00:33:26
Speaker
And, you know, you just sparked something I want to share that has been a huge part of my life and just self-discovery and intention setting practice.
Serving Others and Personal Gifts
00:33:36
Speaker
which is asking a very specific question to myself on a regular basis, which is how can I share my gifts with the world in a way that is impactful, that is joyful, that is prosperous, that is rewarding, adding on all kinds of different things.
00:33:51
Speaker
How can I share my gifts with the world in a way today, just today, or what steps can I take today to live in alignment to sharing my gifts with the world, right?
00:34:01
Speaker
That helps me to clarify why I'm here.
00:34:04
Speaker
On this planet, my mission, I know my mission is to share my unique gifts with the world in a unique way.
00:34:11
Speaker
And that's always changing, right?
00:34:13
Speaker
And that's what I find so much joy in because then I get to be inspired and curious around how are my unique gifts that are continuously shifting and changing and evolving going to make a positive difference in the world, right?
00:34:27
Speaker
And then that fuels so much of what I do and what I'm here to offer in the world and how I interact with
00:34:34
Speaker
the people in my life and how I show up and how I receive.
00:34:37
Speaker
So the questions, the questions that we ask to can help to refine the intentions.
00:34:44
Speaker
I like the, I like the idea.
00:34:45
Speaker
I like the word rest.
00:34:47
Speaker
That's that's, that's,
00:34:49
Speaker
That's a potent share.
00:34:51
Speaker
And I like the word recipe kind of resonates with me.
00:34:55
Speaker
That kind of sparks in me that we can have these intentions for, you know, whatever it is, a physical object or a living situation or a feeling to have.
00:35:05
Speaker
But there needs to be a recipe for that.
00:35:08
Speaker
OK, so how are we going to just it's it's it's not enough to have the word like happiness or joy, you know, printed up on the wall.
00:35:17
Speaker
unless we have like some idea of how we're going to, you know, bring this into our life or how we're going to walk with joy.
00:35:25
Speaker
So yeah, the idea of having a recipe or a plan, I think is key and essential.
00:35:31
Speaker
And I just want to interject.
00:35:34
Speaker
If you do put the word happy or joy on the wall, it can infuse your subconscious mind in a way, right?
00:35:42
Speaker
And it can be supportive as a reminder, right?
00:35:45
Speaker
To keep coming back to that place of, okay, you know what?
00:35:49
Speaker
I am here on a mission to feel more joy in my life, right?
00:35:53
Speaker
So I think that is, it's a part of it.
00:35:56
Speaker
I agree with that.
00:35:57
Speaker
And there's been some studies or research when it comes to neuroscience about how we tend to, these things become just objects in our world that tend to lose significance over time.
00:36:15
Speaker
It's like that exercise bike.
00:36:18
Speaker
ceases to be exercised back and becomes a clothes hanger uh after after a while unless you unless you have a plan for that thing so you can certainly you know have you know live laugh love up on your wall um but i think it helps to maybe infuse that with some meaning for yourself so that way it doesn't just become this you know piece of another piece another decoration in your house speak so
00:36:41
Speaker
So I hear you on that for
Community's Role in Keeping Practices Alive
00:36:42
Speaker
That, that, that reminds me of how, you know, a gratitude practice can also lose meaning if every day you write my family sunsets, my puppy, you know, and it's why, you know, as you have been experiencing Betsy, when you're with a group and you hear other people's gratitudes and you have a practice that is, keeps it alive, can help you keep it active and alive and functioning, uh,
00:37:07
Speaker
in your body and in your, in the same way that exercising that exercise bike, you might stop using it, but if you go to a class and you're around people, you know, then, then you're going to keep motivated and it's going to keep alive.
00:37:17
Speaker
So I think there's a, there's a, some, something in here about how community and accountability and practice makes all of these things much more potent.
00:37:28
Speaker
Um, and I feel, you know, we, we mentioned a number of, um,
00:37:32
Speaker
And this is something I feel like I want to, you know, maybe as you know, when we talk about like our final sparks for a, for a show, this is something that kind of resonates with me as a, as a final spark to, to leave with somebody about.
00:37:46
Speaker
what we're talking about today.
00:37:48
Speaker
We bring up a number of, you know, spiritual people or speakers or thought leaders or whatever that resonate with us or that have, you know, been very helpful to us in our path.
00:38:00
Speaker
And one thing, a person that comes up for me is, it's, um, um, I rank Katie.
00:38:10
Speaker
who has taught me a lot about acceptance, like getting to like getting to accept what is brings me a lot of relaxation, a lot of frankly happiness, joy being like, and that, that clarity I mentioned earlier, it's like having some accepting, like what, what is real, what is really happening in this moment or just in our lives.
00:38:31
Speaker
all right, I have this acceptance and balancing that with intention.
00:38:35
Speaker
It's really hard to, to get, you know, to walk with intention if we're not accepting what is, what is, what is, what is physically, you know, real for us at the moment.
00:38:45
Speaker
So, so I think that's important.
00:38:47
Speaker
The idea of balance between intention and acceptance.
00:38:53
Speaker
Oh man, I think you just opened up a can of worms.
Future Topics and Closing Gratitude
00:38:56
Speaker
I think this is a future episode here of how do you balance things
00:39:01
Speaker
loving what is and goal setting and intentionality.
00:39:05
Speaker
You know, like those are, those are a, that's a rich, rich place.
00:39:09
Speaker
So I'm glad you brought that up.
00:39:12
Speaker
Uh, I want to, maybe a part two, part two.
00:39:16
Speaker
I want to, I guess my, my closing sparks are, um, back to something that, that, that, uh,
00:39:24
Speaker
Betsy was talking about, you know, what are my gifts and how can I share them with the world?
00:39:29
Speaker
And I think that to me, that is like I got chills.
00:39:36
Speaker
I have such a deep and important intention that can, I think that I don't know anyone that that's not going to lead you to a sense of contentment.
00:39:48
Speaker
And it doesn't require any sort of magical,
00:39:54
Speaker
It's very, it's, it is a very concrete, accessible thing that we can all do.
00:39:59
Speaker
What, what do I have?
00:40:01
Speaker
What are my gifts and how can I share them in the world?
00:40:03
Speaker
And if that is our intention and we keep coming back to that, I think we are, we, we have no choice but to be living in purpose and to be, be expanding the joy that we experience and that we share in the world.
00:40:18
Speaker
And I will just kind of echo
00:40:20
Speaker
a part of what you shared when you said, what are my gifts and how can I share them with the world?
00:40:25
Speaker
I personally actually have got caught up in this story of trying to figure out what my gifts are.
00:40:32
Speaker
And so I actually don't try to look for what they are unless it's like a specific writing exercise or something.
00:40:37
Speaker
It's just more so like, how am I sharing my gifts with the world today?
00:40:41
Speaker
Because I have many, you have many, we all have many.
00:40:44
Speaker
We don't know what they all are, you know?
00:40:47
Speaker
So I just want to kind of
00:40:50
Speaker
just share that part for me personally to not get too caught up in like trying to figure out what our gifts are.
00:40:57
Speaker
Then I'll share my closing spark is really about the micro intention, the check-ins around what is my intention on these little moments every day, right?
00:41:08
Speaker
So like I've started to do this practice.
00:41:10
Speaker
If I'm going to call someone or if I'm going to text someone or I'm going to move in a certain direction, what's my intention, right?
00:41:18
Speaker
If I'm on my way to meet someone for lunch, what's my intention, right?
00:41:23
Speaker
What do I want to get out of this?
00:41:25
Speaker
Or like I might write a text and then pause before I send it and go like, what's the actual intention here for sending this text, especially if there's certain charged texts, right?
00:41:36
Speaker
And so like really checking in, what is my intention for this action that I'm taking right now?
00:41:42
Speaker
And is it an alignment to my greater intention for
00:41:46
Speaker
bringing light or joy or connection or whatever the intention is.
00:41:50
Speaker
So little mini moments of checking in with ourselves around what is the intention.
00:41:57
Speaker
That is very powerful practice.
00:42:03
Speaker
Well, Betsy, I feel like we should have started this show with this show is brought to you by ThinkleWho.com and the Power Affirmation Journal.
00:42:12
Speaker
But how can people connect with your deep medicine on this topic in the world?
00:42:20
Speaker
Thank you so much.
00:42:21
Speaker
Yeah, I have a lot of passion in this conversation and have made some tools to help people to get more intentional and more reflective.
00:42:32
Speaker
So you mentioned the power affirmation is a huge part of my offering in the world right now.
00:42:37
Speaker
There's a journal, there's audio affirmations, there is cards coming, there's a course.
00:42:43
Speaker
that really helps to refine our relationship to ourselves, that inner dialogue.
00:42:47
Speaker
What are the beliefs that we're holding about ourselves and which beliefs do we want to change and how do we use repetition and affirmations and gratitude to really create positive, impactful changes in our neurochemistry.
00:43:00
Speaker
So you can find the journal online, poweraffirmation.com and a lot of other things.
00:43:05
Speaker
