First XV Coach Cast Episode 18- Certs for Certs Sake

In this episode I dive into the topic of certifications and seminars. I talk about how certifications, while useful, don’t automatically equate to better pay or improved results. I'll tie that to seminars as well. Take in new knowledge, do not overhaul your entire coaching philosophy after each event.

Introduction and Podcast Format

Jarrod Dyke
Hello again, everyone. Welcome back to the First 15 Coachcast. If you're new around here, my name is Jared Dyke. I've been doing this for about a year now. ah So today, and if you're not familiar with the program, I usually just give, I'm usually just here, do these for about 10, 15 minutes at at most. It's just a little blip into your ear.
00:00:20
Jarrod Dyke
Me babbling about different things, ranging from training and coaching team sports, so on and so forth.

Core Collective Seminar and Certification Discussion

00:00:27
Jarrod Dyke
So without further ado, um, So if you haven't heard, ah core collective is doing a seminar this, this coming, um, this coming October, that at the end, and the end of next month here, actually, we're almost in October. So yeah, in about a month.
00:00:44
Jarrod Dyke
So with that, I want to talk a little bit about what happens to coaches sometimes after they've gone to and personal trainers, when they've gone to a seminar or the, or, and then, um,
00:00:59
Jarrod Dyke
kind of pairing up with that um certs, certifications. So ah first off, let's so I want to just get into certs first and because it'll it'll run right into ah summits and seminars and so

The Value of Certifications

00:01:13
Jarrod Dyke
on.
00:01:13
Jarrod Dyke
So first of all, certifications are okay. They're good, depending on which one you're talking about. But the letters next to your name don't have to mean anything.
00:01:27
Jarrod Dyke
And They're just, you know, your accreditations. That's it. It doesn't equal bit more value or less value. ah You know, I only put, for the most part, I only put the CSCX next to my name because that's the first one I got. It's the one that is the most relevant to most people.
00:01:49
Jarrod Dyke
There are others I could put. honestly don't feel like it because letters next to your name does not equal more money to you. And I think that's kind of one of those weird conceptions.
00:02:00
Jarrod Dyke
And that includes doctor, by the way. Just remember that. d r DR dot does not mean Jack. Okay. Just remember that.

Choosing Practical Certifications

00:02:09
Jarrod Dyke
There are some people that are quote unquote doctors in our field.
00:02:13
Jarrod Dyke
Quite frankly, they probably shouldn't be. Or they should probably just stop calling themselves that because they're doing our industry and our realm way more harm than they are good.
00:02:26
Jarrod Dyke
So there's there's that. So just just keep that in mind. when If you're a coach out there and you're new and you're learning, awesome. you You want to take a cert, go for it. You want to do the sandbag cert, have that. A kettlebell cert, rock and roll, go for it.
00:02:40
Jarrod Dyke
Take what you learn, absorb it into your coaching. It doesn't need to be your your Bible. It doesn't need to be everything you do. Take what you learn, figure out where it fits into all your clients' trainings.
00:02:55
Jarrod Dyke
that's what's going on with those. So that, that's what I have to say about that. And don't collect them like they're action figures or whatever. Um, you know, like they're American girl dolls. so Don't collect them like that.
00:03:08
Jarrod Dyke
If you see something that truly interest interests you, absolutely have that go enjoy yourself, you know, meet, meet some new people, make friends, do donuts. I really encourage that.
00:03:22
Jarrod Dyke
Uh, But if you're just going for the because it's gonna you think it's going to be more letters next to your name and it means you get to charge more, that your gym is going to pay you more money. If that's how your gym works, first of all, you need to start asking questions of your gym or whatever, your your training studio.
00:03:38
Jarrod Dyke
But also, that does just because you have more letters next to your name does not equal that you mean that you get to just charge people more more money. You need to really show your value. So it it comes more from, yeah being able to charge more comes from,
00:03:52
Jarrod Dyke
your experience and your ability to be a good coach and your ability to get people, make people ah feel good and and get them the results that they're looking for. Not what certs you have and and how many letters are next

Alternative Learning Resources

00:04:06
Jarrod Dyke
to you. Like, stop, please stop.
00:04:09
Jarrod Dyke
Certs for certs sake are the silliest waste of money ever. Go read a bloody book instead. Please, please go, you know, go watch some, some of the better YouTubes out there.
00:04:22
Jarrod Dyke
I won't start to name names because it's going to start to and probably poke people the wrong way. But if you have ah coach that you love and that you're really um truly believe that their philosophies are good and yeah their ideas are good, go go find their their YouTube page or their blog page.
00:04:41
Jarrod Dyke
Watch and read. You'll get more value out of that and it costs you way less. So there's that.

Seminar Attendance Tips

00:04:50
Jarrod Dyke
Linking this with... Summits and seminars. And this includes those of us that are going to be speaking at core collective the Core Collective Seminar in October. Going to ah seminar, and i saw I used to see it all the time when I went to um the Summit down in r Rhode Island.
00:05:08
Jarrod Dyke
um Perform Better, that's the one. The Perform Better Summit down Rhode Island, that's the one that was closest to me, and that's the one I went to a lot. There are people that will go to these things, and they'll hear one or two particular speakers.
00:05:22
Jarrod Dyke
And they're going to overhaul everything they're doing. They're not going to just tweak things. They're not going to kind of put in, put in ah a piece where it belongs as as a puzzle.
00:05:34
Jarrod Dyke
They're completely wiping the slate clean and doing things completely differently. Now, if you do that once, because truly your training methods and and ideas were crap, and maybe it took one of these speakers to realize that that is a possibility. I will not, I will not,
00:05:52
Jarrod Dyke
completely dismiss that.
00:05:55
Jarrod Dyke
Don't do it repeatedly. Once, awesome. You've addressed probably a lot of big problems if that if that happened. And you realize that you had many flaws in your coaching and your philosophy.
00:06:07
Jarrod Dyke
Wonderful. You've already improved your clients lives, leaps and bounds. Great.
00:06:15
Jarrod Dyke
What you need to just not do is not keep doing that every year or after every seminar or summit that you go to. Go, figure out what, you know, absorb the knowledge and you're not going to get everything, especially if you're at one of the big, like one of the big ones down in Rhode Island.
00:06:35
Jarrod Dyke
You're not going to be able to remember everything, take some notes, and then figure out where in your clients' programs, where in your philosophies, where in your coaching,
00:06:47
Jarrod Dyke
this stuff fits best.

Maintaining Coaching Identity

00:06:50
Jarrod Dyke
And it may not be more than a few points, but if they're good points, if they're good little, pete if they're good little pieces that turn into like keystones in some way, okay, you just, you, you it paid for itself twofold easily.
00:07:07
Jarrod Dyke
You've, you've done it just right. Because I promised you, if you keep going into your clients programs into your philosophies into your into your coaching and just erasing the board and going going with a new over and over again you're you're never going to give it the proper amount of time for it to develop you're never going to give it the proper amount of time for you to truly figure out who you are as a coach you're just going to be someone else in a beta version which is
00:07:40
Jarrod Dyke
Honestly, if people start to see right through that fast enough that it will eventually lose you people lose your clients. not all not Not that many, but you'll see people will start to figure out like, yeah, you know this doesn't sound like you.
00:07:53
Jarrod Dyke
What's going on here? Words like that might start coming out of either your colleagues or your clients' mouths and people will start to figure out that maybe you aren't being true to yourself as a coach and you're not coaching in the way that makes you a good coach.
00:08:08
Jarrod Dyke
You're trying to be someone else.

Authenticity in Coaching

00:08:09
Jarrod Dyke
you for, and for, and even to put it in into like a team sport perspective, I would never ever pretend that I am, know, Bill Belichick out there on on the, on the sideline.
00:08:22
Jarrod Dyke
Never different, part different people entirely, obviously a different sport, but even still, I wouldn't pretend I'm anybody like that in the rugby universe, nor should know, I'm also,
00:08:35
Jarrod Dyke
if if anybody's ever seen me coach on the sideline, I'm not as stoic as Bill Belichick. I, I have some emotions. I try and keep them in check, but yeah, my, my, ah my bar goes up and down a little bit as it, as it were.
00:08:48
Jarrod Dyke
So why on earth in this situation, would you pretend that you're someone else?
00:08:56
Jarrod Dyke
It's, it's not genuine. It may, it actually makes it harder for you to coach because it doesn't feel right. you know, you're forcing it and it That itself takes more effort.
00:09:06
Jarrod Dyke
That in itself takes more effort. Never mind the effort you want to put into thinking about how to help these clients and how to better your better your' your philosophies and how to better your your assessments or whatever else.

Integrating Certifications with Coaching Style

00:09:19
Jarrod Dyke
And whatever ah other admin BS, you got to throw into that too, because all of us as coaches and trainers have admin crap we have to do. And that's effort that personally, my myself personally, I freaking hate doing.
00:09:31
Jarrod Dyke
So if I had to put effort into that and I had to put effort into pretending to be a different coach, then doing what ah i naturally comes to me and being who I am as a coach and doing the things that I believe in, i got nothing left after that. That's a lot of effort between those two things, let alone, you know, trying to beat trying to, you know, think about how can we best help our clients.
00:09:53
Jarrod Dyke
So those are, know, those go with, I believe the certs and the summits both enter into that category of don't be someone you're not. You know, if you're, if you took a heavy kettlebell cert and Maybe kettlebells just aren't that, you just don't want to be that involved with some of the stuff that goes on. There's some great stuff that happens in there, but some of it I'm just like, for me personally, I'm like, I can think of three other things I'd rather do with a client that this issue, that this movement, this um drill attacks.
00:10:32
Jarrod Dyke
And that's fine. ah There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with the drill that I don't want to do. There's nothing wrong wrong with the way I want to do it. both are Both can coexist. Both can coexist and you can be who you want and find the right things that work for you.
00:10:48
Jarrod Dyke
You don't need to try and, you know, push yourself into believing something that you don't. So that's where
