Jarrod Dyke: Hello everyone, once once again, welcome back to the first 15 Coach Cass, my name is Jared Dyke. It's been a minute since I've gotten into one of these, but it's certainly been a lot less than the last time. so Here we go.
Jarrod Dyke: Today, I want to talk a little bit about assessments and how coaches approach them. and how we can do better because I've... heard some horror stories. I haven't seen any horror stories personally.
Jarrod Dyke: for a while because i work at a wonderful gym core collective if if you don't know where it is please check it out in brookline mass um but in the meantime yeah let's talk about a little bit about some stuff i've heard about because Social media is filled with all kinds of fun fun and very very bad stories. So let's talk a little bit about one thing that we can do better. So four coaches, number one. So assessment, intake, session, whatever you want to call it, movement assessment. I don't care
Jarrod Dyke: Damn. My thing is always, I wish I could put my action what I actually want to call my assessment, which is, what shit can you do? And that's what. That's how I approach things because Really? We're just looking to see what this person can do or what these people can do for exercise and then go from there because We really don't.
Jarrod Dyke: We don't know. We simply don't know. We're approaching this blind as other than just, ah you know, usually an email or a phone call or maybe a face to face on. Some off chance, but on that, we have no idea what we're getting into as coaches. So we need to know what this person can do.
Jarrod Dyke: before we write a program. So... First of all, if you're doing a movement assessment, when you're trying to win in your intake, whatever it is. The number one thing that I see here and really get annoyed by is
Jarrod Dyke: the number of trainers and coaches that try to point out what's wrong with people what like they've tried it and they really it's sad because they really try and make these people these new people who are entering the gym sphere. maybe for the first time ever.
Jarrod Dyke: and you're not making them feel good about themselves. that They don't leave these assessments feeling great. They leave these assessments thinking. there's so something very wrong with them and that is That in itself is so wrong and that we need to just knock that off as coaches.
Jarrod Dyke: Do not. say, you know, do not say you're broken or Try not to use words like... You know, we need to fix this. Amen. there are ways to say that without saying it you know we can address this we can you know we can attack this anything.
Jarrod Dyke: We can improve this. when a fix can be a very triggering word. and it can make people feel like there's something wrong with them. So, yes, if there's someone one that has a knee issue or a hip issue and it's clearly coming out in something like a squat assessment.
Jarrod Dyke: Okay. Yeah. Just be like, all right, it's clear that there's a shift from one side to the other. If you've... gathered an injury history which hopefully you have otherwise that's going to tell you there's something going on right there likely even if it's not ah an acute injury. Something happened or something has happened over time.
Jarrod Dyke: So you can tell, that and you can still do that and say, Alright, you clearly have a shift leaning towards... you know this side that side one back left right forward diagonal, whatever And, and talk about, okay. Let's talk about what we want it to look like and how we're going to get there.
Jarrod Dyke: Now you can use words that don't Sound so freaking negative and that don't make people feel so horrible about themselves. So let's try that, first of all.
Jarrod Dyke: And secondly, just... I know that and I know this is of a More or less a big box gym way of thinking things don't point out every tiny thing that might be you know an issue And that you might want to call a problem because again, we're talking about people that are entering this.
Jarrod Dyke: the gemsphere for the first time ever or in a while likely that are coming to you for help. That's not helping. That is not helping in any way, shape, or form. That is... doing so much bad.
Jarrod Dyke: As opposed to good. so If there's... a small issue that doesn't need to be addressed Shut up. Just... Clear it up. And don't say anything.
Jarrod Dyke: Okay. You are looking at big rocks in an assessment. You're looking at the things that We'll help them move the needle. from getting... you know, where they are to where they want to be.
Jarrod Dyke: Big rocks. The little stuff comes. you know, after years. or at least a year. of consistent good training. and that that that is also up to you whether that is also up to you to make sure that happens as well But.
Jarrod Dyke: Back to it. Every little thing does not need to be pointed out, okay? if there's a slight shift in know theirre they're their form when they're doing a hinge.
Jarrod Dyke: but the hinge looks good otherwise. Awesome. hinging is Hinging is a pattern that I've noticed is very... hard for some people to master it ends up being one of the more difficult if we have to choose between squat and hinge which ones people tend to you know have ah have a struggle or two with it tends to be hinge So.
Jarrod Dyke: If someone's got a really good looking hinge pattern and there there's only a is there's a slight shift that comes If that's the only issue with their whole assessment, all right. You're into minute details already. Fun. Go for it.
Jarrod Dyke: Start working on that. other than that Shut it. shut it. There's probably five other things that they want to talk about before they want to worry about what you want to worry about. And that brings me to the final part.
Jarrod Dyke: It is not about you and what you see. It is about what they want. okay yes they need If there's, you know, I want bigger biceps. Cool. Let's also work on maybe a couple of rows and a couple and a couple other movements that will help that.
Jarrod Dyke: But at the same time. Yeah. Yeah. We're talking about general general population here, especially They need some medicine, but give them a little bit of of the cake too.
Jarrod Dyke: Damn, they'll they like they like they'll like that and also keep them coming back. It'll make them help them feel like they're working towards something that they want. There's not it's not a bad thing, you know Obviously.
Jarrod Dyke: Many people... Today are... I want a bigger ass. Okay. Okay, we gotta use do squats and deadlifts and we gotta do some single leg movements But if you want to do some stuff that's very isolated towards it Rock and roll we can make make that happen, too Right.
Jarrod Dyke: that's We're not here to say, okay. Well, I want us, you know. I want to be able to do a chin up. Well, let's work on your front squat. Hmm. Slight carryover between one and the other, but not ah not a lot.
Jarrod Dyke: Let's maybe think about. that they want to do that shit up. Just... Maybe a little bit because it's about them. Okay. Yes, they're coming to you for your advice and your expertise.
Jarrod Dyke: But they need your advice and your expertise. expertise to get where they want to be. not where you want them to be. You know. and that also can count and you can talk about the benefits of both as well it's got that's going to be a conversation that we can't be just you know you're gonna Put your shit on them.
Jarrod Dyke: That is not a good way to go about this so Let's recap everything that we're talking about here one Okay. You are not fixing them Okay, you're helping them improve their health.
Jarrod Dyke: One. Two. Not every little tiny problem needs to be pointed out. Let's worry about the big rocks And three. It is not about you. It is about them.
Jarrod Dyke: So let's consider those three things when we're going to assessments. That'll make assessments across the board. so much better for people and i bet you you'll have a better retention weight and a better conversion rate especially if you're those folks that are in the big box gyms then there. you know your bosses are more worried about the money you're bringing in rather than the people you're helping And whether they say it or not, it's probably. more of the money than the people that you're helping with few exceptions.
Jarrod Dyke: So. Let's keep that in mind. people don't People don't need to feel broken. People need to feel like they're going somewhere they want to be. and they need to feel like it's their idea and not theirs and not yours. So.
Jarrod Dyke: That's what I have for you all today. Thank you very much for listening. I will be back with more fun soon. Have yourself a good day. and Enjoy your week.
