whether this is a five-star review on your favorite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends, we are very grateful for any support that we receive. So then, getting into it, this was an absolutely crazy game. It drove me crazy at times. I was there. I can't say I come out of it too impressed with how he performed at the weekend, which is quite rare for me after after a victory.
00:01:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I guess we have to look at it in a way where we take the three points, but there is plenty to work on. Let's start with the team news. Of course, we were met with the news that Christopher Iyer was out injured. Mads Rossev came back into the side after some discussion, which we had last week about potentially coming back in, although we did not suspect it to be as a result of an injury. So he he was kind of forced in. Thomas Ranks Ham was forced there.
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
It is thought that Christopher Iyer will only be out for a short time with a minor foot injury and I very much hope that is the case. Because obviously Christopher Iyer is someone who we know in the past has struggled with his injury issues. Masroyssev coming back in. I think sometimes he is harshly criticized. I feel like he is a decent fullback. I don't think he will ever give you an outstanding display.
00:02:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think ever going forward that he will be um terrific in terms of getting balls into the box, in terms of always playing positive passes. I do think at times he is more prone to playing the easy pass or playing pass backwards to his centre back, so back to Fleckham, which I think he can continue to work on. But I think again, I don't think he particularly performed badly against each other at the weekend.
00:02:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
I also think actually he um pushed up quite high up the field. I think Brent Vermay have identified Leif Davis, Ipswich left back, as somebody who we can look to get at, given that he is very good going forward and not so good defensively. We thought that he is not so good defensively, so I thought that was an area we thought we'd try and hurt them in by pushing Roslev up, sometimes going to back three with Sepp tucking in the other side.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and obviously having Ross Leavond and Bummo targeting Leaf Davis at left back. Of course in this game we also saw Whissa back in from the start. I think he made a big difference to our play at the weekend. I think just his finishing ability his ability to link play again I think is something we've really really missed I think at the beginning of the game he did look a little bit rusty I think he had a few loose touches I think that is to be expected from a player who's been out for some time making his first dart back but we instantly saw and obviously will come on to it with the goals and I think should have had two goals um we saw how valuable he is to the side
00:03:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
that meant kevin sharda was benched he did come off the bench like i suspected in the preview last week again i like i said i i don't think that's a bad thing for him i think it allows him to play more on the wing again when he does come on and he can impact games off the bench when defensive tied he can really use that pace i think again the situation he came on in the weekend was perhaps not the ideal one because It's Which I feel at that stage when the game was sitting back there wasn't much space in behind because they'd obviously gone down to 10 men and we were leading for the vast majority of the time that he was on the field um so we did we weren't necessarily really desperate for a goal obviously we did become desperate right at the end when It's Which did equalise. This game also saw Matthias Jenson return to the bench
00:04:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think when he came on, we saw the differences between him and Damsgaard, although I spoke last week about us maybe not missing Jenssen as much because Damsgaard has stepped up so well. I think Jenssen's range of long passing, less so than Damsgaard, who I think Damsgaard is more of a dribbler, he can beat a man. He can play a pass, I think he's a bit more of an all-rounder.
00:05:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I think Jensen traditionally, especially from that deeper role when we were up against 10 men, him back there, spraying passes left and right, especially those long diagonals, almost Trent Alexander Arnold-esque. I think that's something we've missed and I think that's another weapon in our armory that we can really look at taking advantage of.
00:05:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so it was really, really good to see him back. And I hope he gets some game time in midweek from the start, perhaps against Sheffield United in the Cup. Shovel Wednesday in the Cup, sorry. In terms of Ipswich point of view, it was really surprising to me. So I hadn't seen the Ipswich team before before the game kicked off at the weekend. I was arriving at the stadium a bit late, but Dilap, I thought he must have been injured.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
and until ah until obviously I saw him come on in the second half. I'm very, very shocked he did not start for its which. I'm very glad he did not start for its which based on how he played when he was on the field and in that game, because obviously he still had a massive impact and almost scored what would have been a brilliant equalizer for them at the very end. Obviously, Amari Hutchinson as well.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
He pulled out of the side at the last minute through illness, I think Kieran McKenna said. Obviously ex-Brent for player Chudozi Ogbeni also came off on a stretcher during the first half of the game, so we wish him well. Were we lucky to come up against an interest side in this day?
00:06:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
perhaps I think injuries happen to every team I think every team suffers with them but I do think perhaps a promoted team suffer with them more in terms of not having the depth to really have the players step up I think until recently Brentford have suffered without we've not having enough depth in areas and we still struggle with that to some extent and I think the longer in the Premier League the longer that the more we work on the depth and we get the depth um and in different positions and I feel like Ipswich with just one transfer window being a Premier League club maybe perhaps don't have the full depth um in the in the squad in order to better deal with some of these absences that they had. After the first break I will be going into the game and we'll be discussing what was a crazy first half
00:07:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
not necessarily in a good way.
00:08:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
so then welcome to part two where do we start with this game i thought after a very even start which i was still slightly disappointed with i thought even from kickoff we didn't really try our usual kickoff routine we didn't really try to affect the game in the first couple of minutes, capture them cold. We didn't try and get bodies forward like we normally do. I don't know if that but was because I was injured and obviously he's the one that normally goes up for the first ball, but I don't know were really why we couldn't do that from the opposite side with Pat Vandenberg pushing forward from left back in the opening stages. but But regardless, I thought it was fairly even for the first 20 or so minutes, but then
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
very very poor defensively I think and I hate to sing with him out but Ethan Pinnock I think perhaps probably had his worst game for Brentford and that is saying something you know he's been a player he's been so so consistent he was a supportive player of the year last season he's a promotion winner he's you know been so good for so long bren for Brentford but I feel like he really struggled at the weekend and we have spoken before about how it's not his greatest season at the club how maybe he has struggled to adapt the way we're trying to play this season. And I thought he was caught out of position for both of the first two goals, which are obviously so close together as well. I think the first one he appears to go out to close down the attacker, but doesn't anticipate it. The ball's coming into the attacker literally at the same time. He will not get to him in time to close him down, but he goes to close him down and ends up
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
in No Man's Land in terms of he's not level with connet Collins in defence, he's pushed forward, he's out of position. Then there's a hole in our defence and there's a problem. And Schmodix is there to slot it in. I think Rosssev tries to get back in time. Maybe if we're being really harsh, you know, as soon as Pinnock steps out, and Vandenberg and Rosssev have to tuck in. but I don't think Pinnock should be stepping out in the first place and it's a relatively straightforward finish from Schmodix and then moments later it must have been about two minutes later again Pinnock I know he slips in the build up so again you could say at that stage if he's caught out of the back line Sepp and Mads Rosev should cover and step in but again he's out of position the line is not there he does not
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
bust a gut to get back level with Collins. There's no defensive line if you look at where Collins and Pinnock are, both of those first two goals, and they're in twice. And um in this on from the second goal's point of view, Collins is dragged over towards where Pinnock should be because he's he's occupying the other attacker and it's written again through the gap.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
that is very disappointing to me and it's very disappointing that collectively we are again starting as to concede in twos which I felt we did last season and I felt obviously if we go back to the Manchester United game it was that 10-15 minute period at the start of the second half where we conceded two goals that ultimately lost us a game if we go back to Tottenham away a couple of months ago again it was two goals or three goals I think on that occasion in that period after like the first five ten minutes when we had scored until about half time where we lost the game in that period and we don't adapt quick enough during those periods to either concede one and then reset or just you know somehow you've got to stop the rock you've got to stop
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, Ipswich attacking and you've got to stop the momentum. And what we were doing wasn't working. I thought it seemed at points in the first half like someone had put batteries in Flecken and he was trying at every goal kick to release the ball super quick and I didn't really see a need for it. I get the whip two nil down. I get that the players and obviously the fans and everyone wants us to get back into the game as soon as possible but at that stage you have over 50 minutes left of the game. It's which all over us at the time they're putting so much pressure on us and we are going short very quickly players aren't set we're giving the ball away straight away almost and it's which should have scored again to make it 3-0 on an occasion where Flecken
00:13:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
played it out to the defender or he was trying to play it out to, I think it was Janelle's actually, and Janelle was instantly robbed. Ipswich pressed us and they knew that pressing us would work because we are not quite good enough at times at playing out from the back which which we're trying to do if we are pressed to a certain intensity. So it was brave from Ipswich and they really, really did get us in that press in that first half and I thought that we really, really should have adapted a lot sooner. There was an occasion where, you know, we eventually did go along with a goal kick and I felt that should have come sooner, even if that's not how we want to play. I feel like we need to do that. Get a bit of momentum back, keep the ball for a bit or get the ball at the other end of the pitch, which going along would have done. And then maybe if momentum starts to turn, if it should settle down a bit, then we can start playing out again from the back. I just don't think at all in that first half
00:14:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
we were good enough in terms of trying to do what we were doing we were rushing we were rushing it too much and you know we were very very heavily punished for it and it could have been worse at that stage of course all of a sudden the game turned on its head and it was both goals both whistle goals were two slick moves I don't have any complaints about either of them. I think KLP, we'll talk about him in in the second half, but he was driving at the defence. He rode a couple of challenges. Janelle, who's found himself in that position a couple of times recently, I recall the Norgar goal. I think that was against Wolves, where he found himself in like that half space so that he is encouraged to drive forward and he is doing it, to be fair to him. And it was a great square pass.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
into Wisser's path he couldn't miss and and that's how much we miss Wisser to put those chances away. I feel that the second one especially, I know it wasn't given to him um by the Premier League, it was given as an own goal because Clarke on the line touched it two or three times on his way in but I see that as Wisser's goal and I see that primarily werere created by Wisser and just that finishing ability he makes me more confident than anyone else on the Brentford side that he will put those chances away and all of a sudden you know because we have goal scores on the pitch because we are perhaps persisting with how we play and because we are quite slick in the final third we've turned the game on its head and I think it's rich to that stage must have felt extremely deflated you know that they deserve more they should have been three nil up they were all over us at stages
00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they were caught out a bit defensively um towards the end of that first half and they switched off and you can't switch off in the Premier League and I'm sure they'll be learning very very quick but obviously that meant that we went in at half time at two all and of given the circumstances I would have taken that every day of the week I'm not necessarily sure that it's what we deserved at all if I'm really quite honest about that After the break then we will be going into the second half as we analyse how Brentford won the game at the weekend.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
welcome back to part three so then let's get into the second half to be fair i thought we were much better in the second half and i'm pleased that in his post-match interview thomas frank recognized that that first half was not good enough he recognized and he said that that was one of our worst first halves in the premier league and i am very very pleased he acknowledge acknowledged that first of all because i don't think all managers would um given that we ultimately won the game in the end anyway But I think we were better in the second half. I think it's key. Lewis Potter is someone I want to pick out. He completely tore the right back Clark to shreds throughout the game, which culminated in ultimately winning the penalty and the later red card. That diagonal ball in behind Clark at right back on KLP was there all the time watching the game. The likes of dams guard or one of the center the backs on the fence and they had the ball just to switch it over.
00:18:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
KLP had him on toast even if he's not the quickest winger he had the pace advantage on Clark and I thought Clark was too tight to him and You know for the penalty KLP got around him. He's got a brilliant first touch on him KLP and He got that first touch and that just took the ball into his path Clark was chasing him because he was too tight and not quick enough and Clark brings him down and the contact continues in the box Brian and Bumo then goes on to dispatch a penalty and then later on again KLP finds himself in a similar situation again too quick for Clark again Clark calls him down which results in a dangerous free kick and ultimately a red card Clark himself becomes only the second player in Premier League history to score an own goal get sent off and can see the penalty in the same game
00:19:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
That is very unfortunate to him. The first one was Jan Bennerak in that game where Southampton lost 9-0 to Manchester United two or three years ago now. So it's very unfortunate for him. It was his Premier League full debut from the start. I think he struggled. I think like many Twitch players, I'm not sure if he's one of them, but to come up from league one to the premier league in two seasons I think takes a lot and I think the gap and the increase in quality is testament to them how they've done it but it's a massive increase in quality and I feel like he really struggled this afternoon he really struggled in the afternoon with with klp and I'm really pleased that we started to see a more direct keen Lewis Potter
00:20:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
confident enough to run out the defender. He just needs to do that more and more often now and I think the only thing missing from his performance at the weekend was a goal um and I'm confident he'll add that if he keeps being direct. The more direct you are the more shooting across the opportunities you create and I think we'll see his goal involvements automatically go up but we need to see more of that from him now. After the penalty of course Brentford still got pegged back against 10 men and the Dilap goal was almost a carbon copy to Strand Larsen's goal versus Wolves. It was a good finish from Dilap, just as Larsen's goal was for Wolves against us. It was a good cross on Leif Davis, but I think we should have expected that, given Leif Davis and the championship um broke, I think, the assist record um for a defender or maybe um just all-time record.
00:21:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
for anyone so we we know what he's like the left back footage which going forward and maybe we should have anticipated that situation better. I thought it was a little bit unlucky given that the general theme of the game we were looking for the fourth and that kind of came against the one I play but it is frustrating again to see Brentford go ahead and not be able to hold on to that lead even against 10 men. I know by that stage we should have been further ahead through Whissa he was clean for one goal and it was one of those chances similar to actually his first and second really especially a second where he was through and I think he took a bad first touch and he should really have scored and I think nine times out of ten we would see him scoring those obviously Brentford made attacking changes to kill the game with the Alexis Charder coming on Carvalho to Nathan Collins though perhaps had our best had our best chance
00:22:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
um to extend our lead or to to retake the lead um with the ball that dropped him in the box and he fired over again i don't although it's close range i don't really blame him for not scoring that i don't think it's his expertise i think it was a difficult ball to catch correctly it was obviously coming at speed and it was coming you know from a height so i i do think that you know he he was maybe a bit unlucky not to be able to keep it down quite enough um and just to fire it over I do think if he had got that on target it would in more likely than not it would it would have been in then kind of came a succession of crosses towards the end of the game which seemed to be dealt with well it's which you know their centre backs seem to be quite used to dealing with those kinds of balls Murek and Gull was doing okay in terms of claiming them
00:23:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
they minimised the level of confusion or any has this hesitation at the back. And I thought they were dealing with it quite comfortably. Again, I was a bit disappointed with how we were quite predictable in terms of how we were coming forward. it was ah It was a lot of the same crosses, normally a good height, normally quite close close to the keeper. And then Brent forgot the bit of luck we needed on the day.
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Brian and Bermo who I don't think was at his best at the weekend but still came up with two goals and I think that is a sign of a player who is becoming one of the best players in the league I think to still have that impact on a game obviously one was a penalty you still got to score it and I feel like his record now he is closing in on Ivan Tony's penalty record obviously Tony did miss one in the Premier League with Brentford and Bummo is yet to miss and he looks convincing from the spot and it is very nice to know that as a Brentford fan that we have someone who is relatively reliable at spot kicks who we can put our faith in just like we did with Ivan Tony so he's obviously learnt from him it's a similar technique of course he's left-footed I think he didn't mean to put this one quite as far into the roof as in the net as he did
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he ultimately scored, and and I do trust him in those situations. With have the fourth, it was clearly across, there was clearly a mix-up at the back with its switch. I think I said in the preview and highlighted that Murekin goal, we've seen similar errors from him last season at Burnley,
00:24:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I'm afraid we saw another one. Well, I'm not afraid as a Brevva fan, but Ipswich fans will be afraid to know that, you know, that was another one. So could we have expected that from Muric? Perhaps. And then Bummo took advantage of that. You know, he knew it might cause some indecision, put in ah a great cross like that. And to be fair to him, it was curling, it was dangerous. Someone could have got their foot onto it, which I guess Muric was anticipating.
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
but it never came and it nestled into the corner. I think luck evens itself out over the season. And like I said, I think Muric could have done better, but I'm not surprised that we saw an error from him at the weekend. So again, whether it should should have gone in from his keeper, I do not know based on how he did at Bernie last season, but I do definitely think he could have done better with that one. Having said all that,
00:25:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
We almost lost the league again right at the end with that dilap effort hitting the post following a poor giveaway from Jenson. It always makes me nervous when players have only just come back from injury. I feel that they can even mentally sometimes.
00:25:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
not be quite on it, I feel like it cannot be quite sharp, and I feel like we may have saw a bit of that from Jensen, it was very, very sloppy trying to, I think it was like trying to dink it over him, you know, in the in the dying seconds in our own defensive third, when really the moment there was just to get rid of it. Of course on this occasion he got aware of it, but it was a magnificent an effort from Delab, and we've seen him score that before, and I think we were very very lucky to an extent not to concede on that occasion. Ultimately,
00:26:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's obviously a good one. it's ah is Any three points in the Premier League is positive. I think I am disappointed though and I think we need to improve if we are to keep pushing you know up the table.
00:26:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
There is quite a pressing stat that only the bottom three teams in the Premier League have conceded more goals than Brentford this season. And only two teams in the Premier League, which I think is Manchester City and Chelsea, have scored more this season than Brentford. And I think that says a lot about where we're heading as a team. I think going forwards, we look brilliant at times. I think Mbuma and Whistler are central to that in terms of their ability to get goals.
00:27:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
and I do think we're reaching the time where unfortunately Ian Brumo is outgrowing us slightly and we could be seeing the end of him perhaps at the end of the season. I think we need to carry on enjoying him whilst he's here. I think Whistler again, brilliant finisher, has got the ability to match Ivan Tony's goal tally as a bread for number nine. Even without taking penalties and I think that's a testament to him, I feel like he's always scored goals and now he can be considered as that first choice perhaps even when Tiago returns, I think you know we're in such a lucky position um in relation to that. Defensively though, I am concerned. I feel like we are, maybe some of it is down to trying to implement this new style of play and playing out from the bat more often. I think at times we are not good enough at doing it. At times it does work out, but I think during those periods where we go off the boil, I think we need to adapt. I think we need to go longer.
00:28:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we need to stop doing the same thing and wrestle momentum back before we then start to play out again. That would also cause some indecision in the opposition in terms of whether they come to press us or whether they stand off us a bit more. Because if they're thinking the long one might also come, they won't want to press so aggressively because they might get caught out of the back. So I think it's helpful in both ways and I feel like we need to be adaptable more quicker and Some of this is a problem from last season as well, in terms of conceding from losing position from winning positions, in terms of you know perhaps conceding two goals in in quick succession. And it's something we do need to cut out. Obviously, I know we were we're still without the likes of Rico Henry especially, but I feel that we need to really cut these mistakes out and
00:29:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe go back to basics defensively to an extent with the likes of Pinnock being told just to hold his position and just going back to being a good defender rather than having to do all this other tactical stuff I feel like maybe Pinnock just needs to go out back to being a good defender which we we which we all know he is and that's the reason he's been so good for Brentford over the years.
00:29:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, we'll leave it there. Obviously it's three points at Brentford, table looking very healthy still. We've got a favorable weather fixture still coming up and there's plenty to learn from. So from that perspective, I don't think it's a bad thing. I think the players in this, this week won't be overly confident by that victory. So as well as getting maximum points, you know, that they've got plenty to do on the training ground this week. That was it for today then. Thank you for listening to the daily Brentford podcast.
