Northeast Heatwave Discussion

00:00:30
Speaker
Welcome everybody. This is games over plastic episode number 37. am midnight as always joined by my amazing co-host Sean Mason. How you doing today, sir?
00:00:43
Speaker
Good, I'm doing great. it's summer vacation. I'm enjoying life. We had a massive heat wave up here in the Northeast starting last week. It was like, ah I do Celsius, but for our Fahrenheit listeners, it was over, it was basically 100 to 110 degrees every day from basically Monday through Thursday.
00:01:05
Speaker
But it was like, with humidity, like humidity was like at least 80% every day. So like, so like Tuesday was really bad. That was when peaked. peaked 110. humidity was 96%. Oh god. It went outside. It was like... It was 9 o'clock at night. It was 98 degrees outside still.
00:01:19
Speaker
At 9 o'clock at night. It was insane. Thank god. It was so hot. We couldn't even the It was ah it was at nine o'clock at night it was ninety eight degrees outside so and nine o'clock it was it was insane thank god central air like it was so hot i couldn't even go there like we couldn't even on a pool because it was so like Like you didn't want to be in the pool, but it was funny on Monday we went swimming.
00:01:47
Speaker
Um, I got out of the pool. I was dry in like 15 minutes without like a towel. Just the sun just dried me. It was insane. It was massive. And then Friday was like 70 degrees.
00:02:00
Speaker
What is going on? I'm sure you were happy to to feel that 70 degree weather though. I like 85, 90. That's like really good for me. but like It was so it was so a 30 degree difference. It was the weirdest thing.
00:02:14
Speaker
Yeah, that that's hot. 110 degrees. That's like Texas weather. In the summer, we get 108 to 112, but we don't have that much humidity, though. We're not 90% humidity. That's insane.
00:02:26
Speaker
Yeah, the summers around here, the humidity is always minimum 75%. Usually gets up to 90% humidity usually, but yeah, I don't know what this was.
00:02:37
Speaker
I've never in my entire, I've lived in Massachusetts my entire life outside of those four years of college. I have never seen it 98 degrees at nine o'clock at night. It was insane. Like my AC was just constantly running like the central air and you could just hear it just chugging like but it ran all day. I'm like, yeah, I mean, sorry. i don't know what to tell you.
00:02:59
Speaker
Struggling. Yeah. Yeah. My upstairs was... couldn't even go upstairs because the heat just rises. And they we have a... Like i said, we have central air, but like... It's not, I mean, in summer that dot thats you the summer, the top of the house still gets really hot.
00:03:14
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, no doubt. um Yeah.

Appreciation for Buc-ee's

00:03:19
Speaker
A couple things I want to point out real quick. Number one, I'm wearing a new Buc-ee's t-shirt today, baby. Look at this.
00:03:25
Speaker
It's a nice summer light blue color. Heck yeah. It's wrinkly. The reason why it's wrinkly is because I actually wore this shirt on Tuesday, but I wanted to wear it for the podcast. so i'm wearing a dirty shirt just for you guys so you can see Buc-ee.
00:03:38
Speaker
I grabbed it out of the clothes hamper. That's why it's wrinkly. But hey, I had to represent it for Bucky's. And also, shout out to Bucky's. You can see I got 4th of July Bucky there. Patriot Bucky. You see he's got his Uncle Sam hat on. Heck yeah.
00:03:51
Speaker
We love Bucky's, don't we, Sean? El

Introduction to 'Games Over Plastic' Podcast

00:03:53
Speaker
Presidente. Yeah. ah But yeah, this is Games Over Plastic. The podcast for the agnostic gamers.
00:04:02
Speaker
And real quick, before I get into this BS, let me address the elephant in the room. Where is Hodge? Well, let me tell you, Hodge will be joining us. He quit. Yeah, he quit. But he will be back. He will be joining us for the second half of this podcast, listeners.
00:04:15
Speaker
So look forward to that. Hodge had commitments today. He didn't have much time. So he's going to be joining us for the second half of the show where we rank the Nintendo systems from least favorite to favorite. So look forward to that. It's going lot of fun.
00:04:28
Speaker
And Hodge will be joining us. But for the first half of the show, you will have Sean and I, and we're going to do a great job. So... But yeah, this is Games Over Plastic, the podcast for the agnostic gamers. No console wars, just the love of gaming over here.
00:04:43
Speaker
It is available on all audio platforms, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Cast, Everycast. If you are listening to this in audio, please know that this is available on YouTube in full 4K video glory and with amazing graphics by our one and only Hodge.
00:05:00
Speaker
So check us out over there. Leave us likes and comments and subscribe on the YouTube. ah That really helps us out. It really helps us maybe find a new listener or two, which would be awesome.
00:05:11
Speaker
um Also, if you are listening on Apple or Spotify, please rate the show five stars. It doesn't cost anything. If you enjoy it, if you enjoy it, leave it, ah give us a five star rating. That'll be cool.
00:05:22
Speaker
um But anyways, today, as I mentioned, we're going to be ranking the Nintendo

Exploring 'Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma'

00:05:26
Speaker
consoles. But before we get into that, as we always do, we want to talk about what we've been playing, don't we, Sean?
00:05:33
Speaker
ah Indeed. We do. ah So why don't we go ahead and start it off with you, Sean. You want to start? Start with me. All right. We're going to start with nice. Oh, my God. We're going to talk about weeb games. We're talking about weeb games right here. We're Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma.
00:05:49
Speaker
um This game. You guys think I'm a weeb. You boot this game up you know like, what is he playing? ah This is a very much anime game like um it's a it's a i'm addicted to it right now though it is like a it's like an action rpg cross a farming sim cross a like town builder cross persona light cross
00:06:20
Speaker
Xenoblade, like, go out and fetch quests, basically. It's, like, Xenoblade style. um I am loving this game. There are so... There is so much to do. you You start out, and you're the Earth Dancer.
00:06:31
Speaker
ah You're an... You can name your protagonist anything you want, which... The thing I don't like about these games... The the one thing I don't like about games is they let you name your protagonist. It's when it's voice acted, and, like, you have your name, and they just don't say your name in, like, the line. They just go, like, hey, Traveler! And it will say, like, hey...
00:06:48
Speaker
Sean, but they won't say Sean. Like, i don't know. just kind of feels weird. So yeah, uh, you're the earth dancer. You can choose between the male or the female. I chose the male. Um, that's all that I am a male. Um,
00:07:00
Speaker
Makes sense. And sense you, you very anime, you start out, you have amnesia. You don't remember anything. Um, and you have this little companion who is a dragon, but he is taking the form of a woolly, which is like some type of creature in the universe to try to make sure that other people don't know he's a dragon at the time they eventually learn.
00:07:19
Speaker
Um, and you start out in the spring village. There are four basic villages, one for each season, spring, um, summer, autumn and winter. And in each village, there are different companions, and you have to build it up. Basically, the world was taken over by what they call the Blight, and it has basically taken all the runes from the Earth, which has basically killed the Earth.
00:07:43
Speaker
So um basically what you're doing is going around, you are purifying the Earth. you have Because you're the Earth Dancer, you have um special powers that can help purify it, and the more you purify...
00:07:54
Speaker
the better your village becomes. um You have to manage how happy your villagers are. People move in. ah You have a village level. The higher your level, the more people who can move into your city or your town.
00:08:05
Speaker
um You have have to assign the villagers to do certain things. You can assign them to like work on farming. you can get can They can get your crops for you. They can woodcut for you. ah you you need They have to be in charge of the shops. If you don't have anyone in charge of the shops, you're not going to making money.
00:08:19
Speaker
i Sorry. um It's really cool. I got really into the farming aspect. just you know and Designing my village. like you have a there there ah There's a scenic ranking.
00:08:29
Speaker
so If you and people are just like, I'm just going to put a bunch of stuff down so my village ranking goes up because you have like a bunch of stuff there. No, your scenic ranking will go down and that's going to hurt you. People are not going to be happy. so i have like certain areas. Certain areas of my village. I have that The living quarters. So I have all the houses over there.
00:08:44
Speaker
Some trees over there. ah little garden for people. I have the commercial area, which is all the shops. So I have my smithery. My um carpenter over there. My salt shop. My general store.
00:08:57
Speaker
maya There's um ah sugar cane factory. So I get sugar every day. Then I have my vegetable garden where I, you know, i garden all my vegetables over in another area. So I see um whole empire over here. this man's got like a plantation, a whole empire.
00:09:14
Speaker
He's taken over the world of ah produce. Sounds like. And so is his fire alarm. So, yeah, you got to get that fixed, Sean. Does that go off in the middle of the night?
00:09:25
Speaker
there' no That would drive me crazy if that was not really, no. No, it's worse in the summer than in the winter. I know that. um Another thing about this game is, like, I haven't even, like, this is, like, that whole village aspect, but then you have to assign people to, like, uh,
00:09:38
Speaker
the tree cutting, ah mining ore, and you can do this all yourself as well. And when you go out into like the open world, not the open world, but you go out into like the areas where there's actual combat, there's also trees there that you have to cure of the blight. So then you can woodcut there.
00:09:51
Speaker
There's enemies over the map. It's action combat. Um, The companions you meet, you can bond with during the day. Oh, there's a 24 hour cycle as well. And certain things are time limited.
00:10:02
Speaker
And if you stay out too late, you get tired and you start losing health. So like you need to sleep too. And there's a calendar system. So right now um I'm in summer. It's like a fifth day of summer. I started in the first day of spring.
00:10:16
Speaker
on Certain bonding events are tied to certain days, ah depending on what bonding level you are. You can get married to somebody at the end of the game, depending on your bonding level. I, right now, my goal is to marry Hina.
00:10:27
Speaker
I really like her. She's an awesome companion. She's a she's like a um and a traveler, treasure hunter person. She like loves searching for treasure. She loves uncovering new... i new items. She's really good in combat as well. She holds these like twin daggers.
00:10:44
Speaker
And so like she, her, I got her these, I upgrade, you can upgrade your weapons and get new weapons and stuff. it's Overall, it's really cool. You can you have cosmetics. um There are um animal slash human, basically what people call furries in this game, too. you know They have tails and stuff, some people.
00:11:03
Speaker
um It's alright, though. um you meet There's a different god of each um village. so There's a spring god, a winter god, an autumn god, and a... Summer God.
00:11:14
Speaker
And your job basically is to figure out the God basically disappeared when the blight happened. You have to go and you have to find them and rescue them. And then you can become and um you can bond with them. But their whole thing is the village is not supposed to rely on the God.
00:11:29
Speaker
So you are managing how the God is trying to fit into society because they're like human like figures. the The game's really cool. I am really into it. I am so into like mid maxing everything. So like right when the day starts, I get up at 6 a.m.
00:11:42
Speaker
in the in like in game time i run over i get my crops i plant new crops i do i bond with everybody and by time i'm done bonding with all the different companions because i've done all four villages now it's already in game like three o'clock in the afternoon and i'm like no crap now i have to go do everything else i'm trying to do it's super fun i'm really enjoying it i'm almost done with it i put 36 hours into it you can beat the game if you don't do any of the side stuff which i would suggest if you're not going to side stuff the story's kind of like yeah He's trying to save the world, basically.
00:12:11
Speaker
um It's about 20 hours, but I'm doing all, like I said, I'm doing a bunch of the bonding stuff. ah It is actually really funny when you do some of the bonding stuff and the characters don't like it. They're like, ah what are you doing?
00:12:22
Speaker
um What? I didn't really enjoy that. Can you get away from me now? um And that their rating will go down. It's pretty funny. There are some characters I don't like. There's this, I cannot remember her name, but she's like a fortune teller.
00:12:34
Speaker
i really don't ah she's like her. Fortune tellers are annoying. You know, um you know, i'm Snow White. hmm. You know, when, um,
00:12:46
Speaker
not Maleficent, whoever the the mirror mirrorra on the wall lady is. You know that like old princess lady and the old like hag lady? You know when she transforms into the old woman and she brings like the apple?
00:12:58
Speaker
That's what the fortune teller kind of looks like. like It kind of freaks me out. um My favorite god is the summer god from Rune Factory. I want to make sure I pronounce my name right.
00:13:10
Speaker
so um slow i just want to I just want to judge your waifu here. So I looked her up, Hina. ah So she's she's the pink haired girl.
00:13:21
Speaker
It looks like she has some kind of animal ears and horns on her head. Yeah, she does. For some reason. yeah ah But i wouldn't I wouldn't say that she's a furry, even though she has animal ears. She has normal skin.
00:13:31
Speaker
so There are other characters. This is acceptable. This is acceptable. This is the other character I really like, and I might try to romance her. Her name is Matsuri. She's the Summer God. It's M-A-T-S-U-R-I.
00:13:45
Speaker
it's like The names are very Japanese, by the way. and think they It's funny, because they're speaking like English. like They'll be speaking like regular English, a they'll say the Japanese name, and they'll say it like with like the Japanese accent, and it's so weird.
00:13:57
Speaker
Okay. Yeah, I like Matsuri from the look of her. eye like She's got like that little ah ninja... Samurai loves her. She's the best companion for when you're out attacking. She has a fire blade sword, and her personality fits her so well. She is so like in your face. like Like, what? What are you talking about? I didn't do that. like What?
00:14:18
Speaker
What are you talking about me? And she like she calls people out. She's great. um Yeah, overall, the game ah game's fun. So go on. This game looks actually interesting. like I like the graphics. like It looks very vibrant and colorful.
00:14:33
Speaker
It looks very charming and peaceful. I like the the farming. It looks like relaxing. But then it also looks like it's got like a little RPG, too, too with the combat and stuff. The level-up system is really cool, too. You have a whole skill tree. and you have There's so many different things you can level up. like You can level up your construction. You can level up your cooking because you can cook in this game, too. ah Depending on your relationship with other people, you can cook with people.
00:14:54
Speaker
You can go out to dinner with people. it's really it's It's a great game. like I'm really, really enjoying it. um like i Like I said, I'm like kind of addicted to it. I'm going to put this game on my um my list because it looks good. like It looks like something I would probably enjoy.
00:15:10
Speaker
ah combat's fun, too. Even though it's super weeby. The combat is actually fun, too. It's like super fun. Yeah. All right. Well, you sold me.

Platform Availability of 'Rune Factory'

00:15:20
Speaker
um But yeah, continue, please. Sorry.
00:15:22
Speaker
I'll just say one more thing. It runs really well on Switch 2. It runs phenomenally. It is a Switch 2 game. so But there is a Switch 1 version as well. But I bought the Switch 2 one.
00:15:33
Speaker
Nice. I think it's on it's ah it's on PlayStation 2, right? No. Rune Factory is not on PlayStation. It's on Steam. Oh, okay. Okay, okay. um Yeah, these are partners with Nintendo.
00:15:44
Speaker
Like, Nintendo helps fund the game. Okay. I know there was a Rune Factory game that came to Game Pass. I think it was 4. sure? Yeah. There's definitely a Rune Factory in Game Pass.
00:15:56
Speaker
Let me see I think it was 4.
00:16:00
Speaker
Let's see.
00:16:02
Speaker
Rune Factory 4 Special. Oh, interesting. I'm surprised. yeah Yeah, it's on Xbox. That's why I thought that maybe this one would come to PlayStation or Xbox as well. But I have a Switch too.
00:16:13
Speaker
So yeah, I'll put that on my list, man. that looks ah It looks interesting. It looks super weeby, but it also looks charming, relaxing, and fun at the same time. And like I said, it's very vibrant and I like the art style.
00:16:25
Speaker
All right. You have any other thoughts on Guardians of Azuma? No, that's it for Guardians of Azuma. All right. What else what else should play on? Alright, we talked about Mario Kart World last week, but i have ah I have a little bit more to say about it. So I've put a lot more time into it.
00:16:40
Speaker
um Obviously, last week I was not, well, last episode I wasn't as high on it as some other people, but, you know, the more of time I put in I do enjoy it a lot. it is fun to play. Obviously, me and you played. You were not lying. You are horrendous at this game. um that's like Like, you made me, you were like, oh, we gotta play on easy mode! We can't beat the computers!
00:17:03
Speaker
Obviously, I'm just giving you crap. But it was funny it was it it was so funny when I had it on like hard mode and you're like, wait, we're playing on hard? i'm like, isn't everybody? Let me just say, listeners, I played with Sean Mason, the one and only.
00:17:15
Speaker
And yeah, he beat my ass. like he He won like almost every single race. we but We were in a lobby that was like seven people deep. by the way. That's why I didn't want the AI to be cranked up, because there's already seven human players, and there's just chaos everywhere.
00:17:28
Speaker
but I'm just messing around. Sean is the goat at Mario Kart. He beat my ass, for sure. I'm just messing around midnight. You know that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's it's a lot of fun, though. It is a lot of fun playing with people. I finally did the chat functionality. That is seamless. It is so, like, super easy. I'm shocked Nintendo made it as easy it is.
00:17:48
Speaker
And the sound quality is not bad. It's a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. It's fun to just hop on Mario Kart and just play, like, a knockout tour or a couple races. um yeah, I like it. I'm currently, I've still not done any of the open world. i really, I got, I did, I beat 150 CC, all the different cups on 150. I got first place in every race. I have like the three stars and the gold trophy.
00:18:09
Speaker
so I'm kind of done with that. um Now I kind of just play it online sometimes. Like if I have like 30 minutes to kill, I'll just jump on that. But honestly, it's, it's fun. It's a lot of fun. I like it. I've been playing as Luigi usually, and I've been using the same bike now. It's like the,
00:18:24
Speaker
The bike that's based off of like ROB, like the robot, the NES robot. That's what I've been using. Yeah, it's a blast. Rainbow Road is fantastic. I do really enjoy Rainbow Road in this.
00:18:36
Speaker
I still have my criticism. I really wish... um I don't like the intermission sections. Like I like it for knockout tour, but for like regular races, I don't like how it's not just like three laps around a regular track.
00:18:49
Speaker
I kind of miss that. But yeah, it's fun game. Yeah, I will say you mentioned the the game chat on the Switch 2 is awesome. It's really good. ah My Switch 2 is on the dock, and it's like literally 15 feet or more away from me.
00:19:03
Speaker
And people can still hear me pretty clear, they say. So like it works well, um which is impressive. There's one thing that's Nintendo being Nintendo. ah One flaw with this, Sean, is if you're in a game chat, like you're in a party chat, you can't invite new people. You have to make a brand new lobby if someone else wants to join. We had to do that, remember? Yeah.
00:19:20
Speaker
Yeah. So wanted to join? Meatball wanted to join us and we're like, wait, I have to like create a whole new one. Like, ugh. Like, it's so good. But then they have this one thing, like you can't invite people. So hopefully they'll patch that later.
00:19:31
Speaker
Yeah. um But yeah, I'm enjoying it. And obviously, again, I'm just going to say Midnight is not horrendous. I've played with worse people than Midnight. Don't worry. I'm not good, but that's okay. That's okay. ah Alright, yeah, I don't really have much to say about World. I don't really play this game unless you guys are on and you want me to hop on.
00:19:49
Speaker
I enjoy playing with the friends, um but I don't actually enjoy playing Mario Kart World that much by myself. I'm just like, eh, whatever. I'm go play Fire Emblem, or I'm gonna go play whatever game I'm playing right now.
00:20:00
Speaker
ah But it's cool. It's fun. It's a party game.
00:20:05
Speaker
Alright. And then you got another one, right? Yep, so I've been playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. So what I... Oh my god. Oh, okay.
00:20:15
Speaker
Yeah, so I've been playing Smash Bros. Ultimate. So I go to a weekly tournament for Smash Bros. It's really, really, it's a lot of fun. I really like it. Everyone brought their Switch 2s, which is hilarious because we actually played on Switch 2. Super Smash Bros. runs so fast on so on um all on Switch 2. It's like almost like instant. um i Actually, what I did was I erased all my data and I didn't bring over my data with Smash Bros. So I came in with a clean slate and I've already unlocked all the characters and I beat Classic Mode with everyone.
00:20:44
Speaker
Um, it is, like I said, it runs so fast. You can, you could probably, and I, I, I beat classic mode with everyone on the the the highest difficulty and I can probably do like four, three or four runs in like 30 minutes.
00:20:55
Speaker
Like I just speed through it. It's a lot of fun. I love smash. Um, it's one of those games that stays on my switch forever. Like I'll never delete it off the console. um yeah i'm just loving it it just it's so good and it makes me can't i cannot wait to see what the next smash bros game is i just i i'm so enthralled with it uh at this last weekly tournament i came in fourth which was really fun obviously i'm using the gamecube controller but shout to that switch 2 pro controller like i can use that for smash too it's really good as well great controller
00:21:31
Speaker
Yep. um Obviously, I've been playing as my main, so I i well i go back and forth between Dark Samus, Yoshi, and Toon Link. I really like all three of them, but yeah, Dark Samus, so good.
00:21:45
Speaker
I've never played Smash. If I did play Smash, I would probably use a Fire Emblem character like Marth or Lucille or something. ah You could use Marth. You could use Roy, Ike, Chrome.
00:21:55
Speaker
Is Lucille not in it? Lucina. Lucina, yeah, sorry. I should know that. Yeah, Lucina, Chrome, Marth, Roy, Ike, Robin.
00:22:08
Speaker
ah There's so many of them. Blythe or Biles. Are any of them good though? Does anyone play pretty good? i People are really good with Marth. Marth is really good. In Melee, in particular, Marth is like the best. one of the Marth and Sox are like two of the best characters. Marth is probably like the main character of the Fire Emblem series. Him or Ike.
00:22:33
Speaker
Ike is super powerful but really slow. um All right. I've played against people who are really good with Robin, but I don't really use them. um I remember when and they first in melee, when I first unlocked Martha and Roy, I had no idea who they were.
00:22:51
Speaker
Hmm. Okay. All right. Anything else you wanted to talk about Smash Brothers? Because i you know I haven't played it, so. All right. So that's what Sean's been playing. Some good games, some good games. I want to play Rune Factory one day. You sold me.
00:23:04
Speaker
You sold me. I'm going to put it on my list. But what I've been playing, I also have been playing a trio of games, Sean.

Review of 'Fire Emblem Three Houses'

00:23:10
Speaker
So first of all, I beat Fire Emblem Three Houses on the Switch 2.
00:23:15
Speaker
And let me just say, what a phenomenal game. I love this game. At first, it did take me a minute to get into this game. I was telling you, like, I like it, but I don't know if I love it.
00:23:26
Speaker
ah Like, you know, like the whole monastery social link aspect. It took a little while. um But man, this game was awesome. An incredible story. Great characters. Really fun combat and everything.
00:23:38
Speaker
I love everything about it. This is my second favorite second favorite Fire Emblem probably after Awakening right now. So I would go Awakening, three houses, and then I would go the two Fates games, which were both also awesome. all four All three or four, however you want to say, if you want to count Fates twice since it's two different stories, I don't know.
00:23:55
Speaker
um are incredible. They're all nine out of tens or higher for me. I would say probably ah Fire Emblem Three House about a nine, 9.1 out of 10, whatever. It's just awesome, dude. Of course, I went with Edelgard and the Empire.
00:24:07
Speaker
um i sided with her minute one and I stuck with her to the very end. And I got to say, think I made the right call. I feel like I got the best ending. I got the golden ending, if you will, in my opinion.
00:24:18
Speaker
um It was very well resolved. I feel like I was fighting on the side of good. um I feel like it was very satisfactory. And one thing that they did that I love, I love when games have an epilogue. They have an epilogue where they tell you like this character went on to do such and such and this character went on to do this and that. I love that, like that nice little closure. It just feels good.
00:24:36
Speaker
um Fire Emblem Three Houses is absolutely incredible. One of these days I will probably go back and play it a second time and take a different route, um but not right now because I got other stuff I want to get to. When you do replay it and you do check a second route, I'm going to replay it and I will take a second route because I did the golden deer route.
00:24:54
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Yeah. Do whatever you want, but ah the Edelgard route was awesome. But yeah. So what we'll replay it someday, Sean. It's good stuff great game. um After that, I got into another game. I had a little bit of time to kill. I had a small amount of time to kill before Death Stranding 2 came out.
00:25:11
Speaker
So I was like, I need a short game. I was originally going to play Mafia 2. I even downloaded And then I remembered, I'm like, oh yeah, I got this game I got on Steam a while back. It's called The Dark Eye Demonicon.
00:25:23
Speaker
Now this was a game, it's from ah Calypso Entertainment or whatever is the publisher. This game came out in like 2011 or 2012. This is literally we have Dragon Age at home.
00:25:34
Speaker
ah This game is is musty. it's There's nothing stellar about this game at all. This is the definition of mid. I would rate this game at like a 6 out of 10. ah This will probably be the worst game that I played this year.
00:25:47
Speaker
But it wasn't a horrible game. What? yeahs So it's like a poor man's Dragon Age? Oh, it's it's a super poor man's Dragon Age. ah It's just completely mid in every way. Like the combat is very dated and like basic.
00:26:02
Speaker
ah The world is like not filled with a lot of NPCs or a lot of interactivity. The story was decent. At the end, you get to make one choice and you get two different endings. ah But neither one is really that great. It's okay.
00:26:16
Speaker
Like it's okay. um like i said i kind of semi sort of enjoyed this game but also nobody needs to play this game it's super mid i got it for four bucks i just looked at like the like the art style like the um like i just googled the game title and i looked at like the box art well box art whatever like the cover art is it looks like it was made by ai yeah yeah it definitely wasn't because it was too old but yeah 2013 yeah came out in 2013 Yeah, it's ah this is we have Dragon Age at home ah at home.
00:26:47
Speaker
That's what I would say. It's like two levels of at home. It's not it's not very great, but it was OK. There was a lot of choices, you know, at various points you get to make a choice whether you you side with this person or that voice or you spare this person or that person.
00:27:00
Speaker
So it does have a little bit of branching in the story, but ultimately it didn't amount to a whole lot. So Dark Eye, Demonicon,

Critique of 'Dark Eye Demonicon'

00:27:05
Speaker
six out of ten. I just played this as a quick bridge to get into my next game. sha How long was this game?
00:27:10
Speaker
Oh, it's like 10 hours, 10 to 12 hours maybe. Is it like character custom? Can you like create your character? No, no. You're playing as a defined character. You're playing as this this guy.
00:27:22
Speaker
or already forgot his name. That's how mid the game is. I forgot his name. And and i like his sister... um who's not actually his sister, not his blood sister, but like he's in love with his sister, but who's who's not really his sister.
00:27:33
Speaker
And it's like this tragic tale. It's so stupid. Like, honestly, that was one of the reasons why I played it, because I saw a video where it was like hilariously bad games. And like the writing is so bad that it's funny, ah like a funny moments.
00:27:47
Speaker
So that's kind of why I played it. like But ah yeah. So the next game, though, Death Stranding 2.

Impressions on 'Death Stranding 2'

00:27:54
Speaker
Kojima-san. On the beach. Love it, man. On the beach. Should we have connected, Sean?
00:28:00
Speaker
Should we? I don't know. But ah Death Stranding 2 came out. Shout out to GJ. GJ, love you. I got this game for free thanks to jj He hooked me up with some game sharing.
00:28:12
Speaker
I'm using his copy. um I don't have it. Unfortunately, I'm not not going to have any trophies from this because I'm literally using his account to play it. But, uh... Yeah, so Death Stranding 2, I am 12 hours in.
00:28:24
Speaker
I just started Chapter 4. um I started it on Monday, so I played it Monday through Friday. I put in 12 It's like job. It's like a side hustle. Yeah, it's a side hustle. You're a UPS driver.
00:28:36
Speaker
Exactly. This game's really good. um It did take me a minute to kind of get back into the flow of things, get back into the swing of things. um The story is kind a little bit of a slow burn right now. It is ramping up a little bit. Something big did just happen, definitely.
00:28:49
Speaker
um But yeah, it's it's more Death Stranding, but they did add a lot of new elements. There's a lot of new weapons. There's new mechanics. There's new features. um I don't want to spoil anything, but this game is cool, man.
00:29:00
Speaker
I love the strategy in this game. Every delivery has a lot of strategy. Like you plan your route and you can see what you're going to encounter along your route. Like maybe there's going cliffs. Maybe you're going have to cross a river. Maybe there's going to be a bandit camp. So, know, you got to fight humans.
00:29:13
Speaker
Maybe there's going to be BT. So you're going have to fight BTs. And then you have to plan your equipment. So you go into the fabricate menu and you're like, OK, you know, I'm going to have BT. So I need some blood web blood grenades and I need some weapons to deal with the BT. So, you know, there's going to be time for. So I need some spray so I can spray off the packages and make sure they're in pristine condition afterwards. You need a ladder.
00:29:34
Speaker
you know what I mean? You need a ah PCC or whatever so you can fabricate a shelter maybe. um you gotta And you just got to have everything. And then you need your various weapons, your assault rifle, your sniper, your shotgun. and And it's just awesome, dude. Like the whole strategy of planning your route and your inventory.
00:29:49
Speaker
And then you can manage where to put it. You can put stuff on your shoulder. You can put stuff on your legs. You can have an extra pair of boots hanging from a little strap. um And then you you head out, man. You just head out into the world. You have to...
00:30:00
Speaker
You can either take a vehicle if you're lucky or you have to just hoof it. ah You have to keep your balance. You know, you start falling over, especially if you're heavy. If you have a lot of stuff on you, you start like falling over and you have to hold the triggers to like keep yourself upright and stuff.
00:30:13
Speaker
And then when you get to your destination, of course, the music comes in and like they kind of zoom out the camera. Coach Jima does his thing and it's all cinematic and awesome. The combat is really fun. I'm really enjoying when I get to not so much versus the BTs. When I fight the BTs, I'm like, eh, it's kind of boring.
00:30:28
Speaker
But fighting against the human enemies is a lot of fun. Like I've been sniping them um and then they run at me and then I just mess them up. There's a lot of different weapons and options. ah But yeah, I love it so far.
00:30:40
Speaker
12 hours in, really enjoying it. Is it different enough from the first game for you? It's more of the same, ah but they do have a lot of new elements, like I said.
00:30:52
Speaker
like It's a different cast of characters. They added like a music player. They've added new equipment that didn't exist before. There's a whole new mining aspect and stuff where you can help enrich your settlements and stuff.
00:31:04
Speaker
um There is, and I'm only 12 hours in, so I'm sure there will be more. um They did add quite a few new little small elements and stuff, but it is kind of more of the same. um You know, you're connecting, you're traveling, ah and you're unfolding the story.
00:31:19
Speaker
and The one thing I will say is I'm not a fan of the boss fights in this game. I love the normal combat, but the boss fights against the BTs are just not that great, and mostly because it it handles clunky.
00:31:31
Speaker
Most of the boss fights take place in like a big tar pit. Cause they come out from the tar. Okay. And so you're kind of like stuck in like this tar, which makes your mobility slow and it's like janky. And you're like, so you're like, you know, like making your way slowly through the tar, trying not to fall over while they're throwing shit at you.
00:31:49
Speaker
And then they're bullet sponges. You have to hit them with a lot of grenades and bullets and stuff. And yeah, the boss fights are, I would say the weakest point of it, but I love the strategery. I love the deliveries. I love the story. Kojima comes in with the awesome cut scenes and the characters and um yeah so So far, I'm really enjoying Death Stranding 2.
00:32:08
Speaker
How much further, like, how long after the first game does this take place?
00:32:14
Speaker
I don't know you don't know that they really specify it, but I believe, I would say that it's only a year or two at most afterwards, because yeah, it's definitely only a year or two afterwards, because people have not aged much.
00:32:30
Speaker
I'll say that. just curious. Yeah. yeah they They might literally say it and I just don't remember, but I'd say probably like a year later. um It takes up pretty quick after that. So, all right. So that was Death Stranding 2. Did you have any thoughts on that or questions? Anything else?
00:32:46
Speaker
um Probably not. Probably never going to play it. You're going to play it Did you play the first one? Nope. You should play the first one someday. I don't really have any interest, to be honest. There's so much more. like if i If I wanted to play it, I would have played it.
00:32:57
Speaker
and Okay. Okay. Fair enough. I'm not going to push you. I'm not going to force you to play it. Not that I could anyway. All right. So that's what we've been playing, guys. um Anything else that you want to say before we cut to our main topic of discussion with Hodge?
00:33:12
Speaker
um No. All right. So, dear listeners, thank you very much. We are now going to abruptly cut to part two, which we are going to be recording with Hodge right now.
00:33:24
Speaker
So here we go. All right. Now it's time for us to head on to our main topic of discussion for this episode.

Nintendo Virtual Boy's Reception

00:33:33
Speaker
And we are joined for this part, as I mentioned earlier, by the one and only Hodge. He wasn't able to join us for the first half of the episode because he had plans, but he's here for the main event.
00:33:42
Speaker
Hodge, you want to say hello to the people real quick? Hello, everyone. Sorry I couldn't be here for the whole episode, but I am very excited to talk about the Nintendo consoles. Even though I didn't own all of them, but i played pretty much all of them, so I'm excited to talk about them. going be a lot of fun.
00:33:59
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Same here. Same here. um And as he mentioned here, so in this segment, guys, we're going to be ranking the Nintendo consoles from worst to best or from least favorite to favorite, if you will, however you want to say it.
00:34:14
Speaker
So that's what we're going to do. And for this segment, ah Hodge has the master ranking. We sent him. So Hodge, you want to go ahead and take it away and we can go through this. Yeah, so we're ranking 13 basically different, what is it, generations? Technically 12, because we're not including Switch 2.
00:34:31
Speaker
Oh yeah, sorry, yeah, 12. We're not going to include, but we will talk about it at the end of kind of where we had it, and where it kind of would have landed if we hadn't included it. but So yeah, 12, including all handhelds and consoles. So us just we'll start it out at number 12 of our least favorite 2.
00:34:48
Speaker
It was unanimous. It was the virtual boy. ah God, I don't think honestly, I don't think I've ever played this. I'm not sure if I've ever even seen one.
00:34:59
Speaker
I've played it once. Oh, yeah. yeah Yeah, there's one good game on it ah There is. Two passable games on it. There is Mario Clash.
00:35:15
Speaker
And there's a Wario Land game on it that's pretty good. But the thing about the Virtual Boy is if you play it for more than basically an hour, your eyes are going to be dead the rest of the day. You'll be seeing a red and black everywhere. You won't be able to see. It will be like getting your eyes dilated.
00:35:33
Speaker
oh my gosh. Yeah, I just I've heard nothing but terrible about it. Sorry. mean you you No, no, no, you're good. Yeah, I remember I actually I did try this. I didn't own it, obviously. um I did try this once or twice. I remember at like a Circuit City or something like back in the day I went in there, you know, they had a display um and I tried it. You know, it's just black and red and you just you put it in there. It's like bootleg 3D.
00:35:56
Speaker
um And yeah, it wasn't very great. um In fact, I think like if you use it too much, it probably give you a headache. um So, yeah, not a huge fan. Only 11 games were released for the console.
00:36:09
Speaker
It was a commercial and critical flop. yeah yeah And this is one of the things that Nintendo basically kind of throws under the rug. They do not want to acknowledge it.
00:36:19
Speaker
They pretend like it doesn't happen. So do we, though. So do we. Props to them for trying, though. They were way ahead of their time for trying to do like a 3D slash VR headset. But yeah, the the tech was not there.
00:36:30
Speaker
The marketing for it was so weird too. like i just like Obviously, i wasn't alive for it, but like watching the marketing, like it was marketed as like a home console and a handheld, similar to Switch, but like who's bringing this around with them? and like it's like put your eye You know what it reminds me of? You know when you were getting like your eyes checked at school for like that vision test?
00:36:50
Speaker
You know those like big machines you put your face in? That's what it looks like. yeah Where it has like you have to see out the peripherals so you can see the lights and stuff. yeah That's what it looks like.
00:37:02
Speaker
That's insane. Yeah. and so you're telling me it's not as like high quality as a PSVR 2 or a Quest is what you're saying. Just a tad under. Just a little under. I think it was like, what year was this? 1994, I think.
00:37:16
Speaker
Yeah, the tech wasn't quite there. but There's Mario Tennis is on it too. First Mario Tennis game. What was the Power Glove made for? Was it made for this or one of the NES? NES. Oh, NES, NES, yeah.
00:37:28
Speaker
Oh, NES. Okay. It's so I can't remember. it's It's just another one of those failed techs from the 90s that I couldn't really remember what it was for. Now you're playing with power. It's so bad. Now i I remember, I don't think it was Nintendo directly. I think it was the third party, but there was like this vest that you would strap on yourself that had rumble and stuff.
00:37:47
Speaker
And like, as you were playing games, like if you got shot or something happened, like it would rumble your chest and Wasn't that like from like 2010? Yeah. I know it was older than that, dude. I'm pretty sure it's 2010. want to say it was like Sega Genesis type. Hold on.
00:37:58
Speaker
But yeah, let's keep it moving. I'll look it up. Let's see. Rumble, Vest, Retro or something. All right. Yeah, you look that up. And yeah, so we all had that at last place. No, no surprise. Definitively last place. Yeah, very much.
00:38:13
Speaker
But at number 11, what was not unanimously the worst, but was down there is the Wii U.

Sean's Memories of the Wii U

00:38:23
Speaker
um okay I did not own this console, but I did play it a few times and that pad felt like like you could write play school on it or like whatever. i think alex Yeah, Fisher Price. Yeah, it was not a good console. I'm sure you have the most experience with it, ah Sean, though.
00:38:41
Speaker
Yeah, I got the Wii at launch. um um This came at number nine on my list. actually i actually I actually quite enjoyed the Wii U. The problem with the Wii U was it wasn't marketed correctly.
00:38:52
Speaker
um People did not know what it was. um They thought it was either like an add-on to the Wii. ah The tech wasn't really there. It was basically... Not even as powerful as like the PS3 and 360, despite coming out in November of 2012. It was released on a Sunday in the US, which is so weird. Because I remember going to pick it up. I was a junior in high school.
00:39:14
Speaker
I proved it at the GameStop down the street from my house. And so my dad came with me. And he's like, oh, I'm going to get coffee from Dunks. I'll meet you back here. I was out of the GameStop with the Wii The line of the Dunkin' Donuts was longer than the line of the GameStop. And I'm like, all right.
00:39:32
Speaker
That's when I went in there and said, okay, I think we might have a problem here. Now, to say that, I really enjoyed the Wii I came home on launch day with New Super Mario Bros. ah U, which is one of the best 2D Mario games.
00:39:45
Speaker
And I came home with Zombie U, which is a criminally underrated game. When they used the gamepad correctly, it was great. The key word there is when, because it was not really utilized that great.
00:39:59
Speaker
Any Zelda game. So like when they re-released Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD, it was awesome because you had like you had your inventory in the map right in the gamepad. You can just look right at it. Other games, though, not so much like Smash Bros. Like no point in using the Wii U.
00:40:14
Speaker
Now, Smash Bros. 4 Wii U, though, was f freaking awesome. And they had some really cool um like modes in that game that they did not bring back for Ultimate, which is kind of sad.
00:40:26
Speaker
But there was a lot of good games and it introduced Super Mario Maker, which the Mario Maker franchise is f freaking awesome. Like Mario Maker 2 is on Switch is amazing. The original was great. We got Amiibo launched with this.
00:40:36
Speaker
And, you know, there's a very high quality statues. The Wii was had some really good games. And I'd say almost every single game you can pretty much play on Switch now that is worth playing.
00:40:48
Speaker
that's That's what I was going to say is obviously it had good games because so many other games were ported to Switch. and like because Wasn't Mario Kart 8 a Wii U game that got ported? It 2014 because it was my senior year. was April vacation.
00:41:05
Speaker
And I remember i went i was at the YMCA. And remember I remember I came out of the Y. and just worked out. And my car would not start. And I called my friend Trevor. And i'm like, dude, you got to come give me a jump.
00:41:17
Speaker
And we didn't know how to jump a car. And my dad was like, are you freaking kidding me right now? So he came down and gave us a jump. And then we went right to GameStop and picked up Mario Kart Wii.
00:41:28
Speaker
I mean, Mario Kart 8. eight Yeah. It was different, though. They added some quality of life stuff for Switch. But yeah, the Wii U was ultimately a failure. It sold like 12 million units. But I really loved it Nice.
00:41:40
Speaker
Yeah. i get the So I got a couple things here. First of all, real quick, I did look up. The rumble vest. So there's been a few of them. ah But the one that I was thinking of is the the Aura Interactor. It was a wearable force feedback device.
00:41:54
Speaker
It came out in 1994 for the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis. It cost $100 at the time, which is now worth $215. So people were dropping $215 in today's money to wear this bootleg ghetto vest that just had like some weak rumble and stuff.
00:42:10
Speaker
Yeah, pretty stupid. but But as far as the Wii U is concerned, um I actually it's funny. um Me and my friend Rob, know, we were we were thirsting for a new console for some reason. So we actually went to the midnight launch.
00:42:23
Speaker
ah We went up to our local Walmart. We walk in there to the entertainment center at midnight. They were open. There's five people waiting in line. That's it. So we get in line. We're sitting there. He gets in front of me. i think he's like he's like three and I'm like four or something. And someone came behind us.
00:42:41
Speaker
um I wanted the black one because the black one had more storage. I don't remember. if it had like The one I got, yeah. yeah i got So he got the last black one. They had three black ones. So he got the last black one. I come up. I'm the fourth person in line, and they're like, all we got is the white one, bro. Sorry.
00:42:55
Speaker
So I had to get the stupid white one that had like hardly any storage. I'm like, god damn it. So so I got the white Wii U. I barely used it. I played ah New Super Mario Bros. U a bit. That was pretty good. It was like a 2D side-scrolling Mario. Yeah, it's one of the best 2D Mario. It's one of the best 2D Mario games.
00:43:12
Speaker
It was pretty fun, and I actually have some videos on my YouTube channel, ah which were pretty funny because I was really bad at it. Because I hadn't played Mario in a long time, and I just wasn't very good. I was just a shooter bro back then.
00:43:24
Speaker
um And so like I always had some pretty epic fails. It wasn't as bad as the Cuphead dude. you know The Cuphead scenes. like I wasn't that bad. But I was pretty bad at that, so it was pretty funny. ah But yeah, you know like I played that.
00:43:36
Speaker
um I played... ah A couple other games on there. Like I mentioned before, I played the ah Ninja Gaiden 3 or whatever. um I tried a few things, but there really just wasn't much pop. And I played Black Ops 2 on there because I thought I would get easy lobbies. And I did, actually. There wasn't.
00:43:52
Speaker
People weren't that great on ah the Wii U, believe it or not. um But yeah, I didn't play it a whole lot. There wasn't a lot of great games that were coming. Of course, Zelda didn't come until the very end of the generation, basically.
00:44:02
Speaker
And by that point, it was in my closet. so but we do We got Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD, which are phenomenal games. That's true. And I did actually play some of the Twilight Princess on there. I didn't beat the game, but I played it a little bit.
00:44:16
Speaker
I remember running around was like a wolf or some shit like that. i well frank It was cool. Yeah. But yeah, so that was the Wii U. It was funny. Five people in line. I was number four and couldn't get the damn black console because they only had three of them.
00:44:28
Speaker
So that should tell you that they weren't expecting much, apparently. Dude, the Pro Controller was so bad on the Wii Yes, I got that too. and it it had the as It had the sticks were like the same.
00:44:41
Speaker
At the top. They were on the top. And it was so weird. It wasn't like a PlayStation controller. They were on the top. And it was it it was like, i don't know. Everything was so like budget. It felt like all the like the controller...
00:44:53
Speaker
so but It was an abomination. No controller in history that I can think of has the A, B, X, Y buttons below the stick. yeah like That's just not muscle memory that you have ingrained. We were always so trained to go up.
00:45:06
Speaker
Up, up, up. and But you had to go down on that, and it was so awkward. It was so weird. That's why mainly it was just I don't know. Yeah, that that console was, it was okay, but it was a flop. Good games, but not not good console design.
00:45:19
Speaker
and And like the little tablet was cool, even though it wasn't great. It was cool. That's your price. Yeah. But yeah, that was the Wii U, I guess. Yeah. Very nice. Yeah, the next one, I was actually surprised it landed this low. I had it high had the highest ranking on it, even though it was still middle of my list, and that is the Nintendo Wii.

Nostalgia for the Nintendo Wii

00:45:40
Speaker
oh ah I did not expect this to be this low, but this is one actually remember ah like the year after it came out, or maybe the year it came out. I can't remember when it launched, but my parents... ah What's up?
00:45:54
Speaker
Can I ask? are you Is this the consensus rating? Because so far, this is my exact rating. You're not reading mine, right? Yeah. So we all agreed. Okay. All right. Yeah. No, I didn't agree on this. Okay. Yeah. Sean had it at nine. i had it at eight.
00:46:08
Speaker
So, and you had it at like third from the bottom. So, okay. And you're just, it's just a quinkered ink. I had the Wii at 10. I had the Wii U at nine. ah or yeah Sorry, I looked at the wrong thing. But yeah, um my parents, ah like after Christmas, like we all, you know, opened our gifts and whatever. And not that I was complaining about anything, but my parents out of the blue were just like, we were going to buy you guys. like this We were going to. Yeah.
00:46:31
Speaker
No, they're like, we were going buy you guys a Wii, but we heard you you guys didn't want one, so we didn't get it. And we're like, what? we We wanted a Wii so badly. And they're like, when did you hear? Like, we might have said, like, i don't know, PlayStation better or something. But, like, they just, I don't know.
00:46:46
Speaker
Like, yeah, we bought it and then returned it. We're like, oh, my God. Because I think that was when they were really hard to get still because obviously they were impossible to get at launch. yeah And so we were upset about that. But so I never owned a Wii.
00:46:59
Speaker
But I remember playing so much of it in college because the Smash Brothers game that was on it was fun as hell. And um I played Wii Sports all the time, which was a blast. I loved like Wii bowling and baseball and stuff. I loved playing those games.
00:47:15
Speaker
But other than that, i did not own it. So I just kind of played it when I could with friends. But obviously, I'm sure you guys have much more to say about the Wii. Yes, so we came out the week came out when I was in fifth grade and I loved it. um I even know it's, you know, it's lower on my list. I did really love the Wii.
00:47:32
Speaker
ah The tech was really good. it It was more of the games on there that it was like the opposite of the Wii U problem. like They didn't have like the great library of first-party games. Of course, we had like Galaxy. Mario Galaxy is phenomenal. Mario Galaxy 2 was phenomenal.
00:47:46
Speaker
um Twilight Princess, obviously, was a launch game. But I you know i originally played that on GameCube because it was a dual-release similar to... um Similar to Breath of the Wild. so But um yeah, I played a lot of Wii Sports. It's funny how you mentioned Smash Bros. Like, I really enjoy Smash Bros. on Wii. It's called Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
00:48:05
Speaker
But that's like the consensus, like worst Smash Bros. game. that's I love that one. i mean It's because it was a lot less competitive than Melee. Like, you could like trip in it. It was a lot more random.
00:48:15
Speaker
And people were just obsessed with Melee. But I think Brawl is phenomenal. I had the campaign, the subspace emissary, which they... criminally, they've never brought it back, like something like that of that scale. That game is awesome. They full-fledged cut scenes and everything.
00:48:29
Speaker
It was like great. Yeah, I remember my buddy in college. He always played his Pokemon trainer, and he was so good as him. It was unbelievable how good he was playing his Pokemon. He was okay at everyone else, but Pokemon trainer, he dominated.
00:48:44
Speaker
So Brawl came out March 10th, 2008. The hype level for that game, they had this website called the Smash Bros. Dojo, And every single day from like September, from like June of 07 to like March, 2028. I mean, March 20, 2008, they would release, they would release one thing at 6 a.m. Eastern every single day.
00:49:06
Speaker
They could, they might give you like a whole on character of who's in the game, or they might give you a little item or screenshot. So every morning me and my friends would wake up at 6 a.m. Well, we before school, we would check it.
00:49:18
Speaker
And then we would just totally geek out in school about it. Like, I cannot believe, did you see one thing? But like some days you just get, like I said, like a little cutscene or a little screenshot. Other days you get a full-on character thing, and it was freaking awesome. When they revealed Pokemon Trainer, we freaked out. like We could not believe it.
00:49:32
Speaker
It was insane.
00:49:36
Speaker
But it also has one of the worst Zelda games, Skyward Sword. oh Is that one really bad? yeah I kind of wanted to play that one. I don't know. For some reason, I thought the reception was decent for that one.
00:49:47
Speaker
It got a 10 from IGN, but looking back at it now, everyone's like, this game is one of the worst LA games ever. ever Is that the one that you had to have an amiibo to fast travel? No.
00:49:59
Speaker
No, they didn't have amiibo for Wii. You need a Wii Motion Plus for this. ah It's on Switch. Did they modify the controls? or Nope, they did not modify the controls. You have to do motion.
00:50:10
Speaker
the The reason why they can't modify the game, the game is so built upon the motion. like There's aspects of the game where you have to have the motion or the game just won't work. and Okay, I'm not going to play it then. Alright, thanks. yeah Yeah, I hate motion controls. Don't get me wrong.
00:50:26
Speaker
like ah It's still a good game. It's just like not a great Zelda game. Gotcha. So it's like the Mass Effect... ah Andromeda of Zelda. No, it's not. It's much better than Mass Effect Andromeda. I'm telling you that right now.
00:50:39
Speaker
Also, we got the virtual console with the Wii, which I freaking love. I spent so much yeah money on that freaking virtual console. So much money. Which they didn't bring back on Switch. No, I know. Well, no, we have Nintendo Online now, which is, I think it's better.
00:50:54
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I love Nintendo online. But yeah, yeah, I just like I said, i just I loved the ah the sports. ah we The fact that they packed it in, apparently finding out that like that was what Reggie Fils-Aime or whatever, he like forced them to do it. Basically, he's like, you have to pack this in.
00:51:12
Speaker
And it was only packed in in America. was not packed in in Japan. Yeah, that's crazy because that was so much fun. I loved loved playing those. I used to play so much Wii Golf on it. like Yeah.
00:51:24
Speaker
like over my i was You guys know I get up early. Even as a kid, I would get up early. So when I'd sleep over at a friend's house, I'd wake up and be like, ah crap, I got like four hours to kill. So I would just like โ€“ my friend Donnie had a Wii, so I would just like โ€“ play like rounds of golf by myself and just be like, oh, I got you got a new oh new high score. There you go.
00:51:45
Speaker
It was, oh my God, yeah. And then we also got Mario Kart Wii, which is considered like one of the best Mario Kart games. And that was the first Mario Kart game I really played online. Like I got really into it. It also came with the Wii wheel.
00:51:57
Speaker
came with that wheel. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Fun fact about that wheel. I um was playing, me and my sister were playing Mario Kart one day, like over the summer, and summer of 08, because it came out in 08. We put the wheel down, went outside, came back, and was totally destroyed. My dog totally chewed it up. Oh, Jesus. We never used it. We didn't really use the wheel that much. We usually mainly use game view controls.
00:52:19
Speaker
It also had the best Mario sports game, Mario Superstar Sluggers. um ah Such a good game. The roster is absolutely insane for this game. Like insane.
00:52:30
Speaker
So many cool stadiums too. Oh my god. I forget. So like the Wii, I have a lot of great memories with it. It's just that by like three, four years into the console, I was like, all right, I'm so done with this Wii crap.
00:52:43
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. For me, the the thing about the Wii, I did own one. I bought one. I got it later on because you you couldn't get it at launch. I picked it up later when it was available. I was shocked. I was like, holy shit, it's in stock. So I was like, I just bought it. Right.
00:52:54
Speaker
um But I barely played it at all. the This basically had a similar experience to me as the original Switch is that it just had that super stinky vibe because it was so outdated. Like it was still like 480p.
00:53:06
Speaker
It wasn't HD. Like it was just it was just kind of bootleg and ghetto graphically. um And I just didn't really want to play like anything on it. The only thing I used the Wii for was just for the party games with the motion controls, you know, like playing like Wii Sports,
00:53:21
Speaker
Like that was about it. ah We did that a lot at family gatherings. Like I said, like me and my my old ass family members, we would be playing like tennis and we'd be playing bowling and stuff. And that was a lot of fun.
00:53:32
Speaker
um I mentioned on a prior episode that my aunt actually sent me a video from us at Thanksgiving one time, me and my family um playing, you know, Wii Sports. um And I got to see my grandma and my uncle who are both no longer with us. So that was that was cool watching that video again of us all having a great time. But yeah.
00:53:49
Speaker
That was pretty much Wii Sports was it. um I just... It just wasn't technically there, but it was very cool with, a you know, the motion stuff was awesome. on And making the Miis was fun.
00:53:59
Speaker
Yeah, that was cool, too. I remember I did spend a while making one. And all those all those extra channels you could get, like the... There was, like, the Everybody Votes channel where you could vote. They had, like, a bunch of cool, like, Miis channels. Also, Wii Sports Resort came out in 2009. This is how they launched the Wii Motion Plus.
00:54:16
Speaker
Wii Sports Resort was freaking awesome. It was like that, the sequel to Wii Sports. They had sword fighting in it. They had ah basketball. They had like Frisbee. It was a really cool. Really great. that And the Wii Motion Plus was actually pretty good for the Wii. It made the Wiimote like much more responsive.
00:54:34
Speaker
It was good. But yeah, like I said. The Wii was... It was so good that it forced Xbox to kill themselves. Because if if the Wii motion controls wasn't so good, would Xbox have created the Kinect and then forced the Kinect into the original Xbox One, making it $500? Yeah.
00:54:52
Speaker
and And so the Wii killed Xbox. There you go. And PlayStation had their little weird wand thing. think about The thing about that, what you guys are saying about the PlayStation Move and the Kinect, I think they were already in development way before the Wii. Because the PlayStation, they had the PlayStation patent, like they had a pla patent for that controller, that Move controller, like in 2004, like before they even knew what the Wii was.
00:55:14
Speaker
so So I would assume Xbox very similar with Kinect. Like, I wouldn't shock me if Kinect, they already had concepts for that, like when the 360 launched in 05. Yeah.
00:55:25
Speaker
Maybe, yeah. Yeah. All right. Next up, I don't have anything to say about this one, but I'm sure you guys do because you guys both ranked it

Exploring the Nintendo DS

00:55:33
Speaker
pretty well, and that is the Nintendo DS. Yeah. Ooh, I'll go first on this one. like I don't actually have much to say because I didn't own it.
00:55:41
Speaker
ah The only reason why I ranked it so high was because I did own the 3DS and loved it. And this is like the you know the younger brother, the more successful brother. The DS, as I understand it, is one of the highest selling consoles in history.
00:55:54
Speaker
um And I know people absolutely love it. There's a ton of awesome games that came out on it. um It is in the the expansion pass, right? Or is it not? No, no. Oh, it's the GBA, isn't it?
00:56:07
Speaker
um So yeah, I don't have a whole lot to say on the DS. I just ranked it high because the 3DS was awesome and the DS was like the more popular ah older brother, if you will. Sean, you're the Nintendo historian. Tell us about the DS.
00:56:18
Speaker
DS is freaking awesome. The DS Lite in particular. um So I got a DS in Christmas of 04, like the original blocky, big, ugly DS that was disgusting. I got it with Mario Kart DS, which is like my favorite Mario Kart game.
00:56:33
Speaker
It came with a demo for Metroid Prime Hunters, which we played a lot of. That that demo was like awesome because it multiplayer. But the DS was really cool. The reason why it sold so well is it was so accessible to so many different people. It was cheap at the time, a lot cheaper than the PSP.
00:56:47
Speaker
um There were so many cool games. Like Brain Age was a great game. brain Do you guys remember Brain Age? I remember the name. It was like a... It helped you with math. It helped you with like... It basically helped you with just like...
00:57:00
Speaker
learning and everything and it it was very addicting they had sudoku on there it this is a console launched new super mario bros um series launched here which was the first 2d mario in 15 years when it came out so that's it was a big deal because it was like oh my gosh we're going back to 2d that even made my dad want a ds which he was so anti-nintendo since the sn since after the snes uh the ds light was just the best Probably arguably one of the best handhelds ever.
00:57:28
Speaker
it's right I mean, obviously it's one of. um The DS Flight made that ugly looking DS look even worse because it was smaller, more compact, better. um We also got two of the best Pokemon generations on here. Generation 4 and 5 are considered some of the best generations of Pokemon.
00:57:46
Speaker
They're on there. lot of great RPGs are on this console. um One of the best RPGs, not like a licensed RPG. Dragon Ball Z Attack of the Sands is on here. It's a turn-based Dragon Ball game.
00:57:59
Speaker
It's super fun. Super awesome. Touchscreen was really innovative. like No one had really ever done that before. You had PictoChat. Going to an airport as a little kid, you entered that PictoChat. Watch out what you might be seeing. You might be seeing some crazy stuff in there.
00:58:12
Speaker
I learned that the hard way. Yeah. Very much so. But yeah, no, the DS was great. I enjoyed it. It launched with a remake of Mario 64, which was that added 60 extra stars. The controls were horrendous, but it was still fun. Nice. um This also had a lot of just there's a lot of great games in here, a lot of different variety. Nintendo had a lot of first party games and there was a lot of third party support.
00:58:37
Speaker
i mean, even Guitar Hero had a game on here. um Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars was on here, which is considered like one of the best Grand Theft Auto games. um It's like an old school GTA style game.
00:58:48
Speaker
Yeah, the whole the the DS was freaking awesome. This is how I was exposed to Animal Crossing through this. um Animal Crossing, Wild World. of Many nights were spent up way too late playing that game with me and my friends.
00:59:01
Speaker
um It was great. um I love the DS. I still have my original DS. I have the black. Well, the original DS Lite I have. The black DS Lite. um The original DS I broke one of the screens playing Dance Dance Revolution.
00:59:12
Speaker
You love that game. I see Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon was on here. Pokemon Pearl. Pokemon Platinum is the better version, but yes. Good stuff.
00:59:25
Speaker
yeah That was the Dark Ages of Fire Emblem when they had the Shadow Dragon. That was right before it almost died. Because Awakening was the next one, I believe. so
00:59:35
Speaker
Yeah. um Shout out to, oh, they also had Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story, which is like one of the best Mario and Luigi games. They just a lot of, Nintendo took a lot of risk with this console and they really kind of paid off. And Hodge, I know you're a big Kirby fan.
00:59:50
Speaker
Some of the best Kirby games are like considered to be like on here. Nice. Well, then hopefully gets added to NSO eventually so I can play them. I think they will. I think they will. Yeah, I think they're probably just trying to figure out how they do the two screens for and NSO. so That'd be my guess.
01:00:05
Speaker
but Oh, and last thing, Atlus released this game on FDS called Radiant Historia. Oh, I've heard of that. yep Yeah, and the best WarioWare game ever.
01:00:17
Speaker
WarioWare Touch is on here. Didn't they remake Radiant Historia recently? Is it good? Did you play it? I played the original on DS. It was great. Just overall, there was so much there was so many good games on here. Like, so many. Rhythm Heaven started on here.
01:00:33
Speaker
um Gosh, I freaking love the DS. Nice. Yeah, that's why I had it ranked so high, even though I didn't own it. Just because I know it's like so beloved and had so many great games.
01:00:44
Speaker
It was number five on my list. I had it really high, too. I think it was number five on mine, and even though I didn't have it. I just I just do, you know, some some things you just know to to give respect. It was it was six on yours.
01:00:55
Speaker
ah um But moving on, because I'm happy you guys like it.

Game Boy Memories and Influence

01:01:00
Speaker
This one, it kind of makes me sad that it's this low because this is my number two overall.
01:01:06
Speaker
And that is the Game Boy slash Game Boy Color. um I obviously it's 99% nostalgia driven. But honestly, when ranking consoles, that's what it is and when you're ranking them. And ah I put so much of my life and like i it's on my top 10 games of all time. Pokemon Yellow. I adore that game so much.
01:01:30
Speaker
I played Kirby games on my Game Boy. i just have the memory of having that little light you plug in. It looks like a curly straw and a little light you shine. That's what you're talking about. it's exactly like yeah i had that I still have my Game Boy Color, actually. It's somewhere around here.
01:01:49
Speaker
don't know where i put it. I am. Yeah, but I still have my Game Boy Color Pokemon Yellow, Pokemon Silver, two my favorite games of all time. I love those games. And yeah, I just I spent so much time with the Game Boy as a kid. I had a pocket and a color. I never had the OG. My cousin did that big ass block gray the thing is so ugly.
01:02:07
Speaker
But the pocket and color, I loved those so much. So, yeah, Game Boy, what do you guys think? Game Boy is great. I mean, like I said, there's really no bad console on here.
01:02:18
Speaker
The I I was really young when the game was like, I was really young for the Game Boy. But my sister had a Game Boy Color and we would share we actually share the Game Boy Color.
01:02:29
Speaker
So that's how I played a lot of the games, but there was a lot of great games on here. Shout out to this Dexter's laboratory game that I had. It was fricking awesome. That's a cartoon on cartoon network. and Um, I've heard of it. i Yeah. Pokemon obviously started on the game boy.
01:02:44
Speaker
The consoles lasted so long. It was the first game came out in 89 with Tetris. And the last game that came out for it, like from Nintendo was 2001 with Pokemon crystal, which is, that is insane to think about.
01:02:55
Speaker
wow The fact that they didn't release any other, like they didn't release like the successor after that. It was really cool. The Wario Land series started on here.
01:03:06
Speaker
Yep. That's great. I love that. My sister had the purple clear one, like the purple, like the, you know, how you know, like the purple clear one. Yeah. Yeah. There was a lot of great games on here. um You get the Donkey Kong land games.
01:03:20
Speaker
College. Did you ever play the Kirby spin ball on that? I think so. Kirby Tilt and Tumble or something. Yeah, I did play that. Yeah. but like Since my sister had that game, we had we had a lot of great Game Boy games. But yeah, like I said, the Pokemon really gave it a new life when it came out. like The Game Boy was almost basically dead around that time. And then Pokemon came out and then of sudden it's like, oh, let's keep developing for it.
01:03:45
Speaker
And they just kept making more and more. Shout out to the Pokemon trading card game on that. i was just about to say that. I loved the trading card game. That game is on NSO. That game is so good. I tried playing it. I was very confused as to I forgot how to play Pokemon. So I was like, what am I doing? The game's were really good.
01:04:00
Speaker
But yeah, there's a lot of great RPGs on there, too. you have Final Fantasy Legends is on there. A lot of Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon Pinball, the first one. put The second Pokemon Pinball on GBA is better.
01:04:13
Speaker
I thought you said Pokemon paintball. i was like, what? That'd be awesome. Paintballs at each other? I'm sure there's a paintball game on Game Boy, though. Probably. Grand Theft Auto 2 got ported to this. Awesome. Game Boy's great.

Impact of the GameCube

01:04:28
Speaker
It was revolutionary for the time. No one had really ever made a successful handheld before.
01:04:33
Speaker
I wonder if I could boot this bad boy up. The batteries are exploded inside, so I'm going have to clean it out. but I wonder if I can get it going, because I would love to play ah that. But yeah, anything else? Are we ready to move on?
01:04:44
Speaker
Yeah, unfortunately, I didn't own a Game Boy. I don't really have much to say. I mean I played Tetris on it. i did I do remember I worked at Funco Land when I was in high school way back in the day. And we used to sell, Game Boy was still around because, you know it had such a long life.
01:04:58
Speaker
We used to sell a little ah accessory that it was like a magnifying glass yeah yeah and a light. And a light. yeah So it made the screen bigger yeah and lit it up. And that was freaking sweet. Awesome. yeah That's all.
01:05:11
Speaker
All right. Number seven. um sean is going to kill himself for this. game cube uh because this was sean's number one so um i never owned one i played i loved sonic adventure 2 loved mash smash bros melee i loved a lot of games on this but it was just my friends owned it i was a kid at the time and you know you have the consoles your parents buy you so uh i did not have a game cube i did love it claus
01:05:43
Speaker
I think I had Santa Claus for other games and stuff at that time, but I don't know. um But yeah, ah well, I was a PS2 kid mostly, so I loved my PS2. But yeah, I'll let you take it, Sean, because I know this is your favorite. I'll let you spit your bars.
01:05:58
Speaker
GameCube is the greatest Nintendo console of all time. It is cubicle. It has z great one of the greatest controllers ever. I got it on August 15th, 2002 for sixth birthday from Toys R Us.
01:06:09
Speaker
for my sixth birthday from toys r rus My dad came home from work. My mom was drinking beers by a pool and said, well, you promised you'd bring them and I can't bring them like this. So he brought me. I got four controllers, a memory card, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. I freaking fell in love.
01:06:24
Speaker
This has Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Melee, F-Zero, Custom Robo, Digimon World 4. This console is just amazing. Metroid Prime. Metroid Prime, my sister's favorite game of all time.
01:06:37
Speaker
Star Fox Adventure. I spent so much time. The Mario Baseball series started in this. obviously Obviously, the sequel is better on Wii, but this console is amazing. Unfortunately, it was a commercial failure.
01:06:50
Speaker
not Not to the Wii level extent, but um it just wasn't as powerful as the PS2. And at that point, everyone's like, oh, it's all about graphics. um what was i was actually shocked at when I found out it was a commercial failure because everyone I know as when I was that age loved their GameCube. Everyone loved it.
01:07:06
Speaker
the The problem was it didn't get a lot of third-party support. That was the biggest problem. At that time, that everyone wanted the shooters. That's when shooters became really popular. It didn't have the shooters.
01:07:17
Speaker
That's when you know um everyone was talking about everyone was really touting the graphics, graphics, graphics. GameCube didn't have the graphics, which is stupid because the games on GameCube actually... Of that era, GameCube games probably age the best, which is hilarious to think about.
01:07:31
Speaker
Also, we had NBA Street V3 on here was the best way to play because you could play as Mario, Luigi, and Peach. So you can make a team of like Baron Davis, Kobe Bryant, and Luigi.
01:07:43
Speaker
You can make them three be on your team. And it was so funny because louisu the the Mario characters just didn't fit in that universe. They totally stood out. Game's awesome. Mario Kart Double Dash, freaking awesome. I love it. That one's fun.
01:07:54
Speaker
Yeah. It's underrated.
01:07:57
Speaker
ah Yeah, soonish. But um yeah, ah Midnight. Obviously, you have anything to say about this? i I'll keep it short because of time constraints. I never owned this. I ranked it low. Sorry, Sean, just because it was kind of a commercial flop and I didn't have it. I was PS2 and Xbox original.
01:08:14
Speaker
so you guys see I'm seeing you guys don't really own a lot of Nintendo stuff here. No, not really. Or you didn't play them. Yeah. and I wasn't a huge Nintendo guy. Well, early on, we'll get to that. Early on, I played ni a lot of Nintendo.
01:08:27
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I like the GameCube. It's just I like, you know, I ranked it ninth. I just like eight things better than it. but I already know one of them is going be ranked high.
01:08:40
Speaker
It should not be ranked high. I already know which one you're going to talk about. but Anyway, moving on. Number six, we have another handheld, the Game Boy Advanced.

Game Boy Advance Highlights

01:08:53
Speaker
This totally underrated. i Actually, i do. i put this at i put at six, so it wasn't too high, but... like and Anytime I think of this console, I think of that Dragon Ball Z trilogy, the Legacy of Goku trilogy. it's I love those three games so much. that Those alone ranked this at number six on my list. like i Overall, I played you know a good amount of Game Boy Advance games, but those three Dragon Ball Z games are some of my favorite like handheld games of all time, and those alone sold this for me. But, Sean?
01:09:27
Speaker
GBA is freaking amazing. This was, this was like peak Nintendo Sean right here. Uh, well this and DS. Um, I got the GBA in 2002. I got it like that Christmas, right? If I got my game cube and I played so much GBA cause I was, Oh, we were always traveling as a family.
01:09:44
Speaker
I, those dragon ball games are freaking amazing. Pokemon on here is amazing. Uh, we've got the introduction to the mystery dungeon games for Pokemon on here. Uh, the best Pokemon pinball games on here. It's the Ruby and Sapphire one.
01:09:55
Speaker
Um, The plethora of SNES ports on here are insane. Like, um so good. We got one of the most underrated Zelda games of all time. and zel Legend of Zelda Minish Cap is on here. freaking love that game.
01:10:08
Speaker
That game is so good. um There was a ton of 2D side scrolls on here made by, like, Cap'n. We had Castlevania games on here. We had Metroid games on here.
01:10:19
Speaker
uh this the gba was awesome and the game boy micro which was like released in oh five is like an amazing console i am so mad at myself that i didn't buy it because it is like the perfect like version of the gba other than the gba sp was pretty peak well i always wanted an sp i never got one but i always wanted because it was not the first one that had the backlight had the backlight got full and it made so many games like um like more p playable basically because you can like actually see what was going on.
01:10:53
Speaker
um Yeah, the GBA was awesome. ah Golden Sun launched on here. Like I freaking loved Golden Sun. Isn't that on MSO? uh yep but this is sequel mario versus donkey kong one of the bad like i love it that was like a throwback to the old style mario games like the old style uh donkey kong donkey kong games i mean minish cap they had mario kart super circuit which is on here arguably didn't really age well but it was great uh fire emblem was the first is the first u.s release of fire emblem ever was on gba
01:11:25
Speaker
like yeah so many good final fantasy tactics advanced uh mario luigi rpg series started on here i remember getting that for christmas in 03 i freaking freaked out because for some reason my grandma would get every all every boy the same gift and every girl the same gift but that year she got me a gba game when everyone else got some crap gift and i was like what is this this is awesome so yeah i was pumped and this is how we got to play um the definitive versions of like some of those Final Fantasy SNES games, like Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy four
01:12:00
Speaker
Yeah, just amazing. a lot of great franchises started in the GBA. Yeah. Nice. yeah Great console. You have anything midnight about the advanced? Not much, because again, I didn't own this one.
01:12:12
Speaker
um I ranked it at number seven. It was eight, but since we took the Switch 2 out, it was seven. um I think this game looks, I mean, I think this console looks awesome, and it was a huge graphical leap up from the original Game Boy.
01:12:25
Speaker
um And there's a lot of great games on it. Like I was looking through the expansion pass and there's a ton of games in there that look awesome. Like there's two Fire Emblem games that look great. um There's so all kinds of stuff like Sean mentioned. But yeah, I'll just i'll just keep it brief.
01:12:38
Speaker
Looks cool, but didn't own it sadly. One more thing too. This was like the start of like the peak of like obviously... Pokemon was great in Gen 1, Gen 2.
01:12:49
Speaker
like and That set it off. This is considered like the the beginning of the peak of Pokemon and like for in terms of like the quality of games. This up until that end of the Gen 5, which is insane.
01:13:01
Speaker
Which game set it off? It's Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and then you had the remakes FireRed and LeafGreen were on here too. Nice. um Which is a remake of... Was it X and Y after that? No, it's Diamond i'm in in Pearl and then Platinum. That's Gen 4 and then black and Black and White and then Black 2 and White 2.
01:13:19
Speaker
It was the end of like that considered the peak of Pokemon. X and Y was 3DS and I know that because it's the one that I beat. Yeah, it's also considered like one of the worst ones. I thought it was awesome. Because you didn't play the peak, that's why.
01:13:32
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, well, we'll get to that, too, about what I think about some Pokemon games when we get to other consoles. But next up, at number five, we have another one that, well, I guess it's not ranked that low, so maybe

Switch's Handheld-to-TV Innovation

01:13:44
Speaker
Sean won't be that upset. And that's the Switch.
01:13:46
Speaker
she Jesus Christ, there's so many people. Yeah, I mean, I had it ranked at...
01:13:53
Speaker
7 actually so I actually had a lower and so did midnight we both had it at 7 but um anyway this one obviously release a oh yeah which two has to without the switch 2 yeah yeah yeah so ah this one obviously it's was is this the highest selling console of all time or is it still behind PS2 I forgot p s still two I don't think it's going to top PS2 either because Sony will make up some other numbers Yeah, I remember when this console was announced, I thought it looked so like not dumb, but the fact that like in the trailer, this girl shows up to a party. he's like, hey, let's all play a game on this five inch screen. And I was just like, yeah, it's like, really?
01:14:31
Speaker
when Becky shows up to the party with her switch and has everyone gather around a tiny screen. I was going to laugh at her. But the console itself is obviously awesome. It was ah it's, you know, obviously it it deserves how much it's sold. And there's plenty of amazing games. And as much as it kind of sucks that the Switch 2 is kind of a Switch Pro in a way, it's it. it The fact that you can carry all your Switch over to Switch 2 is awesome. But yeah, this console is great.
01:14:56
Speaker
I'm gonna let Sean take it again since this is your number two. What do you got to say about the Switch? Switch freaking rules. A lot of great Nintendo games on here. A lot of great games in general. and obviously it captured the mainstream market. Everyone wanted one. Everyone and their mother.
01:15:11
Speaker
um Obviously some of the games ran like absolute trash on here. Obviously. So don't go please don't go gone don't go play Hyrule Warriors on here. It's going to be like running at a frame a second. um But there was so many good games. many mean, we got Mario Odyssey. That launch year, like, 17 to 18, we got Breath of the Wild.
01:15:28
Speaker
We got a mainline Zelda and a mainline Mario within, like, six months of each other, which is, like, that was insane. And people think those are, like, two of the greatest in their franchise. Obviously, I don't think that, but Odyssey is f freaking amazing. We got the we got that anniversary the 3D Mario collection. We could play...
01:15:44
Speaker
um 64 sunshine and galaxy all in one we got all those u ports up all those wii u ports as well so people could finally experience the greatness of the wii u console uh super mario 3d world is phenomenal my second favorite mario game of all time uh game's amazing um just so many good games uh links awakening remake was on here gorgeous Then we had some weird games like Arms. That was kind of weird.
01:16:12
Speaker
Pokken Tournament, which was actually Wii U game. I totally forgot about that. Ported to Switch. But they added Mewtwo for the Switch version, which was cool. And Metal Mewtwo from the first Pokemon movie. Wii has the mask on. um But yeah, so many good games. Octopath was an original game concept designed for Switch. That's when I fell in love.
01:16:31
Speaker
Xenoblade finally got its mainstream love on this console because the first one was on Wii and then Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on here. Yeah, this I love the Switch. I really, really adore it.
01:16:44
Speaker
We'll get to where I think Switch 2 will end up, but yeah, Switch is great. Yeah, quickly before midnight spits his bars, I have to say it was a genius move to make a console that obviously in the name can switch from handheld to TV console. That was genius. And obviously that is a huge reason. to Yeah, yeah, yeah. You just plug it in and boom, it's on the TV. It was it's perfect. So obviously it deserves the success it had. And yeah, but midnight, obviously you did not have one. But what you got to say?
01:17:15
Speaker
Yeah, I didn't get it because it was just too stinky. Like, it was way too underpowered. I wasn't trying to play games in 720p at 14 frames per second. um I was really excited, though, when it was launched because this was exactly the concept was exactly what I was wanting.
01:17:31
Speaker
Like, I really wanted to be able to play handheld games on the big screen. um I wanted to be able to, because there's a lot of great games that were locked behind a tiny handheld um And I wanted to be able to experience them on the big screen. And I'm like, finally, this is perfect. I can actually play all the the full library, all the great games that I would want to play on a big screen.
01:17:49
Speaker
But it was too stinky for me, so I didn't buy it. I held out till the Switch 2 came out, and now all my dreams have come true. And I'm living my wildest fantasies now, Sean. But I'm so happy now. But yeah, the switch was the Switch was great, but I didn't get it because I held out. I held out. I was like, I know they're going to release a more powerful sequel. I'm just going to wait.
01:18:07
Speaker
They made me wait a long time, but it was worth it. Because Midnight was a shooter bro when it came out. He's like, oh, graphics, graphics. I need my graphics. i don't think I don't know if I was the shooter bro in 2017. I think I was past that. But yeah, i I didn't like the performance and the graphics on the Switch.
01:18:26
Speaker
I was first in line for this at my Walmart. Nice. Nice. Yeah, this. ah Yeah, I love I do. love I love this console. And when the OLED came out, it looks so much better, like the bigger screen. And obviously just being an OLED, it was so which is crazy that somehow the switch to screen looks better. But even though it's not an OLED, it's crazy. I think it's a bigger it' because it's bigger. I think I just make it look maybe. And probably the actual higher resolution.
01:18:52
Speaker
Yeah, it's brighter and stuff. So.

Affection for the 3DS

01:18:54
Speaker
But yeah, it's it's it was a ah fantastic console and it had some of the worst Pokemon games ever made on it. So, yep. ye So hopefully, hopefully they get better. But honestly, I know you're excited for ZA. I am not. I don't think it looks that good. And I hope that eventually they do. You're not real fan, though. You're not a real fan. So that's all right.
01:19:14
Speaker
That's fair. Anyway, ah what I am a fan of was one that was on this next console, though, and that is the Nintendo 3DS. ah you guys are freaking high. had this one ranked high.
01:19:26
Speaker
This is my number four. Yeah, it was four for me also. I loved the 3DS, and I still have it. i actually didn't get it until ah Prime Day, like 2015 or something. This bad boy went on sale, and it's the Pikachu version.
01:19:41
Speaker
And i love I loved this thing. It was the first place I played Ocarina of Time, even though obviously it's an N64 game, and I fell in love with that game. ah Oh, I still got Ultra Moon in it, which is actually... See, that's the thing.
01:19:56
Speaker
I thought Ultra Moon was in a great game, but I hadn't played once. It's considered like the worst Pokemon. And I loved it. I hadn't played once since Silver, though. So it was my i was like when I had my 3DS, was like, I don't know, I need games to play. So I went and bought Ultra Moon, and I loved it. I really, really loved it.
01:20:13
Speaker
and ah Which is why, actually, I've gone back and played some of the older ones when they got like remastered and stuff. And they were great, but I don't know. liked ultra moon. mean, it's hell of a lot better than sword and shield. I hate that game, but, ah but yeah, I, I loved it. I love the 3d function. i actually thought it looked really cool. I like a lot of people are like, Oh, I turned that crap off immediately. I'm like,
01:20:34
Speaker
I loved it. I played Ocarina of Time entirely in 3D. It looks so cool. Luigi's Mansion I played on there. Awesome. What was it? Luigi's Mansion 2? 2. Yeah. I love that game. i Yeah. i I just loved this this ah this handheld. And yeah. but So Midnight loves it. You go first.
01:20:53
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Let me get my bars off. So I actually bought three. different 3ds consoles so you know i didn't have any of the handhelds before this right i didn't have a huge interest in the handhelds but then of course i said you know i saw the fire emblem awakening trailer and it looked fucking awesome dude like the the anime cut scenes the awesome looking story the the turn-based tactical combat with the grid uh the little cut scene that they would show where they you know you'd swipe the dude it'd be like 59 looked awesome i was like i have to get this so i literally i went on like
01:21:24
Speaker
Craigslist or something. And I found 3DS, like used 3DS teal model or whatever, and I got it for the cheap. And I picked up a Awakening and I played it and I beat it. And then they come out with the 3DS XL. So I'm like, oh, it's got a bigger screen. It's better. It has other upgrades. It's awesome.
01:21:42
Speaker
So I had to get that. So I bought ah the blue and black or whatever 3DS XL because I had to play Fire Emblem Conquest and stuff on it, which was also an awesome game, by the way. So I had that and I was happy and then they did it to me.
01:21:56
Speaker
They came out with the black and gold Zelda Triforce Edition 3DS Limited Edition, which I put in the Discord. And I had to get that. So I sold my black 3DS XL.
01:22:08
Speaker
And I went out and bought this ah the Zelda one, which looks incredible. You see it there. um And it came with the Zelda game, too, um which I did play quite a bit. I didn't beat it, but I played it quite a bit. A Link Between Worlds?
01:22:20
Speaker
I think that's what it was. Yeah, it was like supposed to be a spiritual successor to A Link to the Past. Link the And it was pretty good. I played it pretty deep, but I didn't finish it. But I just I love this console. I played several games on it, mostly Fire Emblem games, I will admit.
01:22:34
Speaker
ah But yeah, the 3DS was real. The 3D aspect was really well implemented. You just flip the switch and like you don't need any glasses or anything. And it looked good. Like it actually looked pretty good. I didn't use it most of the time, though, because I found if I used it too much, it started to give my me some eye strain.
01:22:48
Speaker
But it looked awesome. ah This console was awesome. that And this is why I rank the DS so high, because I love the 3DS so much. And I'm like, well, the DS is like the more popular ah predecessor and had better, more better games, probably. But I love the 3DS. Sean, what did you think of it?
01:23:04
Speaker
I love the 3DS, but in no world is it better than the Switch, Game Boy Advance, GameCube. Yeah. No, I really like 3DS. 3DS is great. I got it at launch. I, like Midnight, bought multiple. I had four of them.
01:23:18
Speaker
I bought the original launch 3DS. So I was part of the Ambassador program, which they... Do you guys remember that? I remember. Yeah, you got like free games. And some of those games, never they never released them. like on the They just didn't release them ever. Yeah.
01:23:32
Speaker
Street Pass functionality was super cool on here. um Hodge, you know, i get this guy I give you crap about Ultra Moon. I still enjoy those games. I just i just was like, oh, that's like the worst Pokemon game to me. I still really enjoyed it.
01:23:43
Speaker
Some really cool um Pokemon designs in those games. um That's when they kind of go into like their Digimon phase with like their Ultra like they're ultra beast
01:23:54
Speaker
Yeah. So while he's got his alarm going off, I just give a quick shout out to ah Fire Emblem Conquest or Fire Emblem Fates. Excuse me, was the game I played. I played both of them. Birthright, ah which was the one where you're like playing is like the Japanese family and also Conquest, which was awesome.
01:24:10
Speaker
Two awesome stories. Beat them both. Completely different. anyway um Speaking of the 3D aspect, um Hodge, Super Mario 3D Land, which is like the predecessor to Super Mario 3D World.
01:24:21
Speaker
It was a launch game. You like had to play it with a 3D in order to like actually like do the play. It was really cool design. Star Fox 64, the port they did, playing that in 3D was super cool. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, those are the definitive ways to play the game is on the DS.
01:24:38
Speaker
I would argue like if you're going play those games, you play them the 3DS, not the N64. um Because especially if you've never played them before, because it's going really difficult to play like the N64 versions. yeah A lot of great games. A Link to the Past. I mean, A Link Between Worlds was great.
01:24:52
Speaker
ah The Virtual Console was great on here. um lot of just great games. They release they re-released ah the Game Boy Pokemon games on here on the Virtual Console, which was like super cool. And you could you could trade them. with You could bring those Pokemon with you to Gen 6 and Gen 7, which is x and Y and Sun and Moon, which is really cool because you could have your Blastoise from Pokemon Blue.
01:25:11
Speaker
all of sudden you're in and y you're like holy crap this is amazing um fire emblem awakening i didn't play it but you know great things uh animal crossing new leaf is probably the best animal crossing game on here so many good games uh unfortunately it kind of got overlooked because at that time that's when like the iphone really got popular like everyone had these like iphone games and like everyone's like oh this is great still 3ds it still sold well and it still did really well Yeah. the Quickly, I'll just... Oh.
01:25:40
Speaker
go go No, you go. so i was going to quickly add that they did come out with that new 3DS, which was like... i buy I didn't buy that. I was like, I'm not doing this. Oh, it was great for Smash Bros. because you had like the C-Stick.
01:25:51
Speaker
Smash Bros. was on here too. That was great. God, I remember getting that. Oh my God, that was insane. Sorry, Hodge, I cut you off. No, you're good. I also... I posted the in ah the Zencaster thing, but the I always wanted that n NES one and I could never find one.
01:26:06
Speaker
had it. I had I'm so jealous. That thing is so awesome. but And then also, I know I've said this before on the show, but I got to say it again. Mario Kart 7 was so good. so good.
01:26:16
Speaker
It was so good. I've played it online with my cousin all the time. Introduce the glider. that was so That had arguably the best Rainbow Road too. Maybe Mario Kart World might be a little bit better, but that Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 7 is unreal.
01:26:29
Speaker
um The only weird thing about that game is you couldn't be Waluigi in that game. and there was no what They took Waluigi out of that game. which is He is the king of the spinoffs. He's not in any mainline games. He's in all the spinoffs.
01:26:41
Speaker
um Also, shout out, um this is RPG called Ever Oasis on here. Oh my god, it is so good. um like so it i can it's I really want... like they they They made a Switch port, but I want a Switch 2 port and I want a sequel.
01:26:56
Speaker
Ever Oasis is so good. Yeah, 3DS is freaking awesome. I really do like it. Oh, yeah. Shout out to Pokemon X and y the first Pokemon that I beat, which I loved. There you go.
01:27:07
Speaker
And I know you guys are like, that's trash. You didn't play the good ones. But, hey, I still had fun. I've never played X and Y. You know what? I'll give this. I actually enjoyed Sun and Moon over X and Y. So, yeah, I'll say Sun and Moon is little bit better on my book.
01:27:18
Speaker
X and Y, I'm like, I can't with this. now But um moving on. Yeah, this is the one that Sean's going to vehemently disagree with is the N64. Yeah.

N64's Love and Criticism

01:27:28
Speaker
I... yeah i
01:27:33
Speaker
i love, love, love the n sixty four Obviously, yeah, it's pure nostalgia and stuff, but Mario Kart 64, I still play that with my friends all the time. The original Super Smash Brothers, Goldeneye, even though that game aged like milk, that game does not hold up well at all. It is terrible, even though we'll still have to play it online on the Switch 2 eventually. But i yeah, it's... It'll be my first time playing it.
01:27:58
Speaker
Oh, really? Yeah. ah Obviously, it was Mario Super Mario 64. That game. Fantastic. I just love love this console. Every time it was one of those I never got to own. I had a PS one, which obviously I loved. I loved my PS one. and But every time I went to a friend's house who had an N64, it's like we have to play top. Put this on. We're playing N64. I played the crap out of this system. I love it.
01:28:23
Speaker
Yeah, I understand. i understand the criticisms against it. and Everyone hates that stupid controller, even though I... Bowser Claw. it's so It's so ugly, but I love it anyway. I don't care. So I understand your criticism and not thinking it should be up here, but i I love this console so much that I had to put it... i think I put it at number...
01:28:43
Speaker
One, yeah, i put out one. but thirteen Mine was 12. ah No, mine was 11. Sorry, 11. um One thing I will say about N64 is this. I'm honestly joking around i think it's it I think it's a good console.
01:28:56
Speaker
I think the highs are really, really high on the N64. Those highs really hit. Mario 64, like Hodge said. Mario Party started on here. um Ocarina of Time. Smash Bros. started on here.
01:29:08
Speaker
The lows, though, oh boy. The lows are very low. um That claw controller is horrendous. ah Some of the games, it's like Mario Kart 64 is, I'm sorry, it's not a good game. I never liked it, like ever.
01:29:23
Speaker
I always hated when everyone wanted to play it. Like this game's a horrible. um But the highs, like I said, like Ocarina of Time blew me away when I saw it. I was two years old the first time I saw it, and I was like, what?
01:29:37
Speaker
is this and i remember being freaking out when you come out when you first become older link and you come out of the um temple and you're in um hyrule and there's the on the re-deads running around like running around hyrule that scared the crap out of me as a kid Like totally scared me.
01:29:57
Speaker
Also has Majora's Mask, which is one of the great N64 games. We had Pokemon Stadium one and two. Those were great. You could you had the little adapter. You could put your Game Boy game in it and play your Pokemon game all on the big screen, which was really cool.
01:30:09
Speaker
But this the library of great N64 games kind of ends there. Like there's not like the third party games are not good on here. There's also like I'm a huge JRPG guy, RPG guy. There's like none. There's like barely any on here.
01:30:23
Speaker
Other than Paper Mario, which is one of the best games of all time, obviously. yeah but i know no go he go I was to say, like I said, the highs for me are really high with this console, but the lows are really low and there's really nothing in between.
01:30:38
Speaker
Yeah, and I'll say I agree with you on the third-party thing, because i remember every game that was on N64 and PS1, I liked it on PS1 much better. like it I think a lot of it has to do with the controller. It's the cartridge. They're still using a cartridge. so that really don't think with it we weren't it I'm not even talking about graphic-wise. I'm just talking about the way it felt to play.
01:30:57
Speaker
yeah like but Not just in the graphics, but the amount of storage, so they couldn't have like voice a lot of voice acting and stuff like that. But again, i'm just talking about the way it controls. like yeah and It didn't feel right.
01:31:09
Speaker
Yeah. ah Midnight. Yeah. So n sixty four was my number three. I own this console. I played the hell out of this console. um I didn't play a ton of games on it. It mostly was like five or six games that I just played a crap ton of. Of course, Goldeneye had that, played it a ton with my brother and my mom's boyfriend. He was a gamer. We played that a lot too.
01:31:32
Speaker
um And we were just we were just getting getting down, playing on a lot of Goldeneye split screen. That was tons of fun. um I played and beat Mario

NES's Role in Gaming History

01:31:40
Speaker
64. I was just blown away by the graphics, like the huge open worlds that were 3D at the time were just so breathtaking and and revolutionary.
01:31:48
Speaker
Mario 3D was, but or Mario 64 was awesome, dude. It was so fun going in the castle. You jump in the paintings, you go, you beat the levels and stuff and you get all the stars. What a, what an awesome, ah charming, beautiful game. I love it. Yeah.
01:32:03
Speaker
Ocarina of Time, the first and only, I think, Zelda that I've beaten. ah That game was incredible. Again, 3D open world was super awesome. And, you know, I love the the dungeons and everything and the music. And it was just it was just incredible.
01:32:18
Speaker
um It was awesome. This was a great console. I played a ton of WCW versus NWO World Tour, the wrestling game, too. ah We played that a ton. It was it was really fun, like ah doing the super moves and like just taking people out. It was great.
01:32:33
Speaker
um But I'll keep it short here. But yeah, that was an awesome console. Real quick, lightning round. Favorite N64 game, Hodge.
01:32:43
Speaker
Well, I mean, Ocarina of Time, but I didn't play until 3DS, so I guess Mario Kart 64. Midnight. WCW versus NWO World Tour. Played it so much. So fun, dude.
01:32:56
Speaker
but Paper Mario 64. Or Dr. Mario 64 is really good too. Which is funny. Those are like two of the last games ever that came out for the N64. Was Paper Mario made by Intelligent Systems back then?
01:33:08
Speaker
Yes, it was. It's a great RP. It's so good. um so Like I said, I like the N64. yeah You think it's overrated is what you're saying. I think it is a little overrated.
01:33:20
Speaker
Alright. All right. Number two. Obviously, we're down to the two greatest Nintendo consoles of all time, which a lot of people agree on this. I don't think Sean does, but ah number two is. oh God. Where'd my list go? I'm pretty sure I'm right. Yep. The NES.
01:33:37
Speaker
OK, good. Thank God this is not the one. i no Thank you. Yeah. Thank you. NES. This game. It had my one of my favorite games of all time. Kirby's Dream Land. I love this game so much. i It's the best. Obviously, it has OG Mario's.
01:33:50
Speaker
They're awesome. Oh, one through three, some of the greatest games ever made. ah Yeah, I'm not going to. don't have too much. Like I said, I've said this before, but the fact that my mom, I i don't know, is probably in the 90s when the SNES was already out. But as a kid, you don't really realize what comes out when.
01:34:06
Speaker
And so when my mom comes home from a garage sale, it's like I bought this n NES and like 20 games for like 20 bucks or just like. And so we just played the living crap out of this console. ah I say the NES, it has so many great memories and just some games that were just straight up fun. And it launched a Nintendo's gaming. So it's yeah video games. Love it.
01:34:28
Speaker
Yeah. I love this console. So, yeah, that's my number one. Or I really, number two I mean, I really love the NES. A lot of great games, a lot of great games like Mario one through three, the launch Legend of Zelda, obviously the best thing ever was my dad and my mom were dating. They lived in an apartment 1986. The console had just come out. My dad went to Sears.
01:34:50
Speaker
He told my mom he was going buy buying a couch. He came home with an NES. Um, That is great. um it It got him in... I grew up... Obviously, I was born 10 years after it came out, but like I grew up remember playing it all the time. Mario 3.
01:35:04
Speaker
um My favorite franchise of all time started on here. Final Fantasy. A lot of great RPGs started here. Final Fantasy. Dragon Quest. So many good games. A lot of like random like these like random license games, too. like There's a lot of Looney Tunes games on here that were really good.

um Just a lot of great... games on here. the The controller is kind of hard if you go back to it now to pick up. it's like It's just like a box, basically, like a rectangle. But yeah, it's a lot of fun. Nothing beats that classic. You open up the top, letly you plug you put it in, you push the ah cartridge down, and then you shut it. You know you blow into the cartridge, put it in.
01:35:40
Speaker
Yeah, no, it it was it was great. We still have our original and NES from when my dad bought it at the Sears. Still works. We have the CRTV to hook it up and play, and my dad plays through Mario 3 at least once a week.
01:35:52
Speaker
Wow. Awesome. and I mean, doesn' it doesn't take you that long to beat it. so Yeah, yeah. ah night But yeah it's great. and It is crazy to think about Mario 3 running. Mega Man 6 running on that console.
01:36:04
Speaker
And then compared to like Mario Bros. 1, Mega Man 6 pushes that console to its limits. I forgot Mega Man launched in that console. Mega Man is so good. freaking love Mega Man.
01:36:16
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, so the and n NES, of course, this was the console that got me into gaming. It turned me into a gamer, my first home console. Shout out to my grandma. She gave it to me for Christmas. I was so stoked. I was so pumped.
01:36:29
Speaker
That was a big gift back then. It was expensive. um And yeah, I just I played so much NES, played so many games on it. Of course, I played ah Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, Excitebike.
01:36:41
Speaker

01:37:06
Speaker
contra i played contra back then dude i still remember the up down left up down up down left right left right ba select start which is hilarious because it doesn't make the game that like it's not like oh you're automatically going now you need if you don't do that if the game you can beat the game without the contra code you're a freaking god that yeah those games were hard man um yeah and yeah i do remember there was like a little glitch or something uh in mario where like if you get the little shell stuck um but yeah unlimited points yeah yeah but uh We're on a time limit, so that's all I'll say for the NES. It was awesome.
01:37:37
Speaker

01:39:06
Speaker

Oh, really quickly before we go, I had Switch 2 at number 10 for right now because it hasn't really proved itself too much other than the fact that it's a great console, so...
