What really separates baseball players at each level? It’s not just talent—mindset, discipline, and how fast they adjust. In this episode, I break down the key differences between playing at different levels of baseball and how those same principles apply to any career. Whether you’re in baseball, business, or any competitive field, success comes down to handling pressure, making quick adjustments, building strong habits, and embracing failure. Want to level up your game—on and off the field? Let’s talk about how to start thinking like a pro.

Speaker
We will be posting ah a lot of content regarding careers, athletically and professionally as our founders transition to a life outside of baseball while making sure that we stay up to date on trends and topics in the baseball world as well.
00:00:58
Speaker
Our goal is to help you navigate this baseball journey wherever you are in this journey. You could be a middle schooler, a youth player, a high school player, a college player, a professional player. Our goal is to help you with our experiences and share the lessons that we have learned throughout our careers and baseball journeys.

Speaker
My goal is to keep these episodes fairly quick, not taking up your whole day. I know if you're a college athlete or a high school athlete, you've got a lot of stuff going on. You have a lot of competing priorities and we just want to make sure that these episodes are streamlined and giving you the best information in the most efficient way possible.

Transitioning from Amateur to Professional

00:01:46
Speaker
So I just want to start off by talking about what actually separates a college player from a high school player. It's not just the talent, it's the mindset, the discipline, and how fast they can adjust. So here's the thing, these same principles that we just spoke of, you can apply to middle school baseball to high school baseball, from youth baseball to middle school baseball, from college baseball to professional baseball. So I wanted to keep this all inclusive of every level, and each level has its different challenges, has its different setbacks that you will face. However, I wanted to keep it as general as possible for all of um all of our listeners.
00:02:30
Speaker
So the thing is, is that these same principles not only apply to every single level, but also any career inside or outside of baseball. Number one, game speed and handling pressure. From a baseball perspective, every pitch is gonna be faster, the pitches are gonna be sharper, there's gonna be less room for mistakes. The mistakes get exposed instantly, whether it's an error in the field, a strikeout, a pitch that's left middle, middle, the mistakes will be exposed. You cannot afford to be slow to react, you have to make adjustments as quick as possible.
00:03:10
Speaker
In a job setting, the higher the level, the faster things move as well. If you're in business in any sort, success comes down to staying composed under pressure as these things are flying around you. Everything's going to start to speed up. How well can you slow it down?

Decision-Making and Discipline

00:03:28
Speaker
Number two, making faster adjustments.
00:03:33
Speaker
For instance, from a professional hitting standpoint or a collegiate hitting standpoint, you don't have months, weeks, or years to figure things out. You have to make adjustments week to week, game to game. You don't have time. Sometimes you have to make adjustments pitch to pitch. There is no time to go back, sit down, and think about all the adjustments, mechanics, and all these tweaks. Sometimes you have to make a quick adjustment or you're not going to get Another shot. Sometimes you get one at bat in a game. Sometimes you get one inning on the mound. You have to make adjustments quick. You may not get a full opportunity every single time. You have to make the most out of what you get. From a business standpoint,
00:04:20
Speaker
The employees who quickly pivot when things aren't working are able to stay ahead. If you are able to stay ahead, if you are able to keep moving things forward, you'll be tasked with more responsibility. You'll be tasked with more resources. You'll be tasked with more things to take on and be able to improve upon.
00:04:41
Speaker
Number three, discipline and daily routine. At the next level, you cannot just rely on talent. Everyone's good. Everyone throws 90. Everyone has a nasty curve ball. Everyone has a good change up. Everyone can hit for contact. Everyone can hit for power, etc. Obviously at different levels.
00:05:00
Speaker
Different circumstances, different scenarios. However, for the most part, people are always getting better as you increase the level. The difference, the advantage is where you train, recover, and prepare. If you can have a strict routine and stick to that daily over time,
00:05:22
Speaker
you can become more consistent than the others, you can outlast, and you can have more longevity than the others, which is going to put you ahead in the long term, may not be after a week, may not be after a month, but over time, you are able to gain the advantage by doing the small, simple things.
00:05:40
Speaker
In any field of business, talent and the brains can only take you so far. If you are consistent and reliable every single day, people will ask you to take on more tasks. They'll feel comfortable asking you for things. You'll become more accountable for bigger parts of the business and you'll be able to grow in that sense as well.

Mindset and Networking in Sports and Career

00:06:02
Speaker
Number four, handling failure and long-term mindset.
00:06:07
Speaker
You have to understand that even if you are hitting 350, even if you are having a great season, a great week, a great game, there is always gonna be failure. You cannot dwell on that failure. You have to look at the long term, how you can adjust from that failure. If you let up a home run or you get shelled after an outing, you have to be able to adjust and move forward. If you stay in that one outing, you are just holding yourself back from the next outings.
00:06:32
Speaker
instead of figuring out and figuring out what you did wrong and then adjusting from there. If you stay in that one outing and dwell on how bad you are, you're gonna get the same results over and over. From a business standpoint,
00:06:45
Speaker
Same exact thing goes. If you fail at something, whether it's a sale, some sort of marketing tactic, some sort of operational cost saving that you thought you were going to have and you didn't end up having,
00:07:02
Speaker
What can you learn from that? Why didn't it work out? Where is there opportunity to grow? Where is there opportunity to optimize? And where is there opportunity to change, test or experiment so that the next time you get the opportunity, you can be sure that the results will be in your favor. Number five, the business side of the game.
00:07:29
Speaker
The higher levels you go, it's not so much about talent, although I've already talked about this. It's also about networking and knowing your value. If you know your value, what you provide to a team, sell that. When you're in a room with a coach recruiting you, sell what you provide to the team. It can be deeper than your fastball, it can be deeper than I throw 90. It can be how good of a teammate you are, how disciplined you are, the effect you'll have on other kids in the program, how you will leave the program better than you found it, etc. There's a long list of things that you can add to a team that does not include your 60 time, your max exit velo, and your top velo off of the mound. In a career,
00:08:18
Speaker
business boils down to the relationships, the networking, the branding, and the seizing opportunities. If you have a small opportunity where you're in at a small company and you can grow from there and learn all about the business and use that in your long-term career, that may be an opportunity that you want to seize.
00:08:38
Speaker
Knowing people, building relationships, branding yourself, and showing what value you can provide to a business before you accept an offer, before you are even given an offer, is how you are going to grow in your career.

Recap and Engagement

00:08:55
Speaker
To finish up, number one,
00:09:00
Speaker
game speed and handling pressure. Understand how to slow the game down and handle pressure. Number two, make fast adjustments. Number three, discipline and daily routine. Make sure you are prepared. Number four, know how to handle failure and have a long-term mindset. Number five, play the business side of the game.
