In a world where every purchase choice involves plastic & pollution, how can we minimize the negative effects of our choices?  Is the cost of convenience simply too much?  And how can we know if what we do matters!?!?

Speaker
Welcome to Stay Sparked.
00:00:04
Speaker
On this show, we explore how to stay inspired in the modern world through the most profound lessons from Burning Man, relationships, entrepreneurship, psychedelics, spirituality, travel, and more.
00:00:17
Speaker
On today's episode, we talk about conscious consumption.
00:00:21
Speaker
And we talk about what we can do about doing our part to be mindful in this era of late-stage capitalism.
00:00:28
Speaker
We get to touch on topics around plastic, fast fashion, and the ways that our dollars can make a difference in the world.
00:00:36
Speaker
Enjoy the episode.
00:00:37
Speaker
Welcome to Stay Sparked.
00:00:39
Speaker
We are three longtime friends who have been inspiring each other for over a decade.
00:00:44
Speaker
So we are here now to share conversations aimed to inspire and light you up.
00:00:49
Speaker
Thank you so much for listening.
00:00:51
Speaker
If you've been enjoying these conversations, we appreciate you leaving us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts and please share to help spread the sparks.
00:01:00
Speaker
I'm Giannis.
00:01:02
Speaker
I'm Betsy.
00:01:03
Speaker
And I'm Halcyon.
00:01:06
Speaker
And we have a review to share from my side of paradise.
00:01:10
Speaker
It says this podcast helps me stay connected to the magic and get a deeper sense and understanding of what burning man is to me and how I can apply the energy of the burn to my life.
00:01:21
Speaker
Great conversations that are really fun to listen to.
00:01:24
Speaker
Thank you.
00:01:25
Speaker
Side of paradise.
00:01:26
Speaker
We appreciate that.
00:01:28
Speaker
Thank you.

Gratitude and Positive Vibes

00:01:29
Speaker
So we like to start off our conversations with a little bit of gratitude.
00:01:33
Speaker
It's a good way to start the day.
00:01:35
Speaker
So Halcyon, what are you feeling grateful for in this moment?
00:01:41
Speaker
I saw a play last night, a musical, the Hunter S. Thompson Unauthorized Untitled Musical.
00:01:48
Speaker
And I'm super grateful for the experience of live performance art.
00:01:53
Speaker
It was beautiful and funny and touching.
00:01:56
Speaker
I cried and still thinking about it.
00:01:58
Speaker
So I'm just feeling very grateful for all the work and effort of all the artists involved in pieces like that.
00:02:05
Speaker
Nice.
00:02:07
Speaker
That's a very good thing.
00:02:08
Speaker
Betsy, what about you?
00:02:11
Speaker
I too am grateful for music.
00:02:13
Speaker
I've been on this journey of experiencing a diversity of music.
00:02:17
Speaker
I got to go to Bhakti Fest, which was lots of kirtan and spiritual music.
00:02:22
Speaker
And then I went to Troubadour, which was lots of live music and strings.
00:02:26
Speaker
And then I went to an event that was all DJs.
00:02:29
Speaker
And so it's just really amazing how the diversity of music brings people together.
00:02:35
Speaker
And I'm just lit up from all the dancing too.
00:02:39
Speaker
Nice.
00:02:39
Speaker
Nice.
00:02:40
Speaker
That's fun.
00:02:40
Speaker
Love, love, love and music myself.
00:02:43
Speaker
I am grateful this morning for
00:02:48
Speaker
Our cats, they have gotten to be over the last week really lovey, much more so than usual.
00:02:55
Speaker
And this might be connected to the fact that my partner and I are having a baby in about a month, month and a half.
00:03:01
Speaker
Maybe they maybe they're shifting and sensing that there's new life coming in.
00:03:04
Speaker
But for whatever reason, they have been super lovey cats like rubbing up against us, which is amazing.
00:03:10
Speaker
I mean, they're cool cats, but they haven't been the most lovey cats, but they are super lovey, and it seems like it's kind of shifting their personality.
00:03:18
Speaker
So that's definitely a lot of fun.
00:03:20
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, Betsy, you're welcome to join the kitty brigade over here, Betsy.
00:03:26
Speaker
Yeah, come cuddle.
00:03:28
Speaker
Nice.

What is Conscious Consumption?

00:03:29
Speaker
So we are today discussing...
00:03:33
Speaker
Conscious consumption.
00:03:36
Speaker
Now, that looks like, you know, with kind of the state of the world, what does that mean to be a conscious consumer?
00:03:46
Speaker
What is within our capabilities to affect change?
00:03:50
Speaker
How do we feel about that?
00:03:51
Speaker
So it's a pretty full spectrum topic, and we're going to try to
00:03:56
Speaker
you know cover cover at least three bases of it for a bunch for each post um betsy um you were inspired to bring this uh bring this topic up so let's start with you what's uh what's going on for you in this realm yeah
00:04:14
Speaker
Well, to give our listeners a little peek behind the scenes around how we choose topics.
00:04:19
Speaker
So the three of us, we record weekly and usually a couple days beforehand, we just see where the inspiration comes from.
00:04:26
Speaker
And this was a topic that kind of popped up or sparked for me this last weekend.

Fast Fashion and Consumer Choices

00:04:32
Speaker
because I was at an event and we were having this really wonderful experience of celebrating and, you know, everybody's wearing these amazing outfits.
00:04:42
Speaker
And I was talking to this woman who was sharing with me how she discovered this website that is basically promoting fast fashion, which I think most people are familiar with that term at this stage.
00:04:57
Speaker
But if not, fast fashion is basically a
00:05:01
Speaker
very inexpensively made clothing that you can order online from overseas that you can get, you know, 12 outfits for $100, you know, everything is under $20.
00:05:15
Speaker
And essentially, it really promotes like trend consciousness, right?
00:05:22
Speaker
So in trends move so fast.
00:05:24
Speaker
And the concept of it is really contributing to a lot of waste, unfortunately.
00:05:31
Speaker
There is just so much clothing in the world now so that you can see mountains of it from a satellite.
00:05:39
Speaker
I don't know if you guys have seen these images from outer space, but there's certain places in the world where there's just like huge mountains of materials, of clothing waste.
00:05:50
Speaker
Not only do we have the plastic in the ocean,
00:05:56
Speaker
right, the garbage patch that people have been tending to and cleaning up over some years, but now it's also clothing.
00:06:02
Speaker
And so it really got me into a deep contemplation around that, right?
00:06:06
Speaker
How do we each do our own part?
00:06:08
Speaker
And does it make a difference?
00:06:10
Speaker
And so I got into a really great conversation with my friend about it.
00:06:13
Speaker
And, you know, it was bringing up lots

Do Individual Actions Matter?

00:06:16
Speaker
of different things.
00:06:16
Speaker
And so I wanted to kind of unpack this conversation with you guys here to, you know, really
00:06:23
Speaker
really contemplate and consider how does each of our
00:06:28
Speaker
individual buying power make a difference?
00:06:31
Speaker
And is it making a difference in the grand scheme of things?
00:06:34
Speaker
Because I personally struggle with that at times, you know, if I'm making a difference, simply by going to the thrift store and purchasing from, you know, reused and trying my best to do that, well, you know, 100 other people are doing the fast fashion is my unique,
00:06:54
Speaker
process going to make a difference?
00:06:56
Speaker
I hope so.
00:06:58
Speaker
I really, really hope so.
00:06:59
Speaker
Is it like going and shopping at the farmer's market and buying from the farmers going to make a difference when, you know, there's hundreds and hundreds of other people that are buying from
00:07:11
Speaker
the grocery stores and plastic bins, you know, so that's where I sort of struggle with.
00:07:15
Speaker
I, every day I try to, you know, consider, okay, I am making a positive difference.
00:07:20
Speaker
And the more, the, the more that each of us do that, then it starts to rise.
00:07:25
Speaker
So yeah, I'm really curious around your guys' thoughts on that.
00:07:28
Speaker
And, you know, is our individual actions making a difference?
00:07:35
Speaker
Man.
00:07:36
Speaker
Well, I, I,
00:07:37
Speaker
I would love to touch on the, you know, does it matter first?
00:07:41
Speaker
And then we can dig into like some of the things that we do and can do.
00:07:44
Speaker
Because I mean, the, that does it matter what we do is, is so core to our experience as a human being.
00:07:52
Speaker
And I think it, it, it's with, with,
00:07:54
Speaker
fast fashion, with conscious choices, with our words and our actions.
00:07:59
Speaker
I mean, there's so much of our life.
00:08:01
Speaker
And I think for me, if you get caught up in trying to figure out how you can play a part in fixing the world,
00:08:11
Speaker
you will give up.
00:08:13
Speaker
That project is too big.
00:08:15
Speaker
That project is impossible to fix.
00:08:18
Speaker
So if you get caught in that place of like, well, if not everybody's doing it, this isn't gonna work, you're eventually gonna be discouraged.
00:08:25
Speaker
And so to me, it has to be like, what choices can I make so I feel good about the way that I am living this lifetime?
00:08:36
Speaker
And that's it.
00:08:37
Speaker
You know, like if, if at the end of my life, the world is worse off than it was, but I moved the dial in for my, my impact was better.
00:08:46
Speaker
I got to consider that a win.
00:08:48
Speaker
And it's otherwise it's, I

Practices of Mindful Consumption

00:08:51
Speaker
don't know how you go on.
00:08:53
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:55
Speaker
Yeah.
00:08:56
Speaker
And that's pretty much would have been my take on it, which Halston spoke, spoke so eloquently about it.
00:09:02
Speaker
My own process with that is very similar in that,
00:09:08
Speaker
seeing it just how much work needs to be done and what am I capable of doing?
00:09:15
Speaker
Are my efforts really helping?
00:09:17
Speaker
I'm not going to get a boat and lead a fleet out to the middle of the ocean to clean up garbage.
00:09:24
Speaker
So it's my recycling efforts and my upcycling efforts, my
00:09:30
Speaker
efforts to reduce and reuse, is that all going to make a difference?
00:09:35
Speaker
It makes a difference to me.
00:09:37
Speaker
And I think that's as far as we need to kind of look and just, you know, the whole like think globally, act locally, you know, kind of thing and really bring it home.
00:09:46
Speaker
really, you know, bring it home and with my own actions, like we've, you know, like I mentioned before, my partner and I are having a baby and we have made a conscious decision that we're not going to do any plastic toys.
00:09:58
Speaker
Um, you know, we might have to do Legos down, down the road.
00:10:01
Speaker
So, because we, we love the, you know, whole Lego stomping, you know, um, obstacle course, uh, idea, but other,
00:10:10
Speaker
But other than that, it's going to be all like wooden types of things and books and so on and so forth.
00:10:16
Speaker
And that just feels good to us.
00:10:19
Speaker
We're really conscious about the amount of plastic that we're using.
00:10:23
Speaker
And yeah, unless a large amount of people are doing that, the difference might not be so great.
00:10:30
Speaker
But...
00:10:31
Speaker
that helps us to feel good about what we're doing and how we're showing up in the world.
00:10:35
Speaker
And I don't think that can be overstated, like how we feel about ourselves and how we're showing up.
00:10:41
Speaker
And even if we only inspire one other person to kind of be mindful and considerate of their usage, their consumption, then that's a win as well.
00:10:53
Speaker
So I feel like just keeping it, you know, keeping it local because there's a lot of things where
00:11:01
Speaker
Okay, I'm going to get an electric car.
00:11:03
Speaker
I'm going to get a hybrid car.
00:11:05
Speaker
And that's going to help cut emissions when other countries across the ocean are pumping in all this carbon.
00:11:13
Speaker
And so I was like, is my difference going to make a difference?
00:11:16
Speaker
Well, yeah.
00:11:17
Speaker
Yeah, because it ultimately affects how I feel about how I'm showing up in the world.
00:11:22
Speaker
And that alone makes it worth it.
00:11:26
Speaker
Yeah, I love that so much, Yanis.
00:11:27
Speaker
Right, right, because how we feel internally does make a difference,

Lessons from Burning Man on Consumption

00:11:32
Speaker
right?
00:11:32
Speaker
I know personally I've had moments where that guilt just like feels so awful.
00:11:38
Speaker
I'll give you an example on how to shift.
00:11:40
Speaker
So I love this little taco place and they have the most amazing salsas, this little salsa bar.
00:11:47
Speaker
And the way that you get the salsa is in these little plastic cups, right?
00:11:50
Speaker
And each customer comes over
00:11:52
Speaker
and gets like four or five or more, right?
00:11:56
Speaker
And every time I go over, I'm like, oh God, I get this like tension inside.
00:12:00
Speaker
I want the salsa, but I hate all the plastic, you know?
00:12:03
Speaker
And so after going multiple times, I started to actually bring my own little Tupperware.
00:12:10
Speaker
And so last time I went there, I used it and I felt this sense of relaxation in my body.
00:12:17
Speaker
I felt grateful.
00:12:18
Speaker
And then it was so funny what happened because this guy that was behind me, he was like, oh, wow, you brought your own thing for the salsa.
00:12:25
Speaker
He's like, I always feel so guilty, but I don't know what to do.
00:12:28
Speaker
And he's like, thank you for bringing that because now I can start to think about bringing my own to fill it up.
00:12:35
Speaker
And I was like, oh, good, okay.
00:12:37
Speaker
So maybe that did make a little difference.
00:12:39
Speaker
You know, if there's one person and then who knows, maybe he starts to bring it and then there's a couple people that see him that bring his own to-go container.
00:12:47
Speaker
Same thing with like,
00:12:48
Speaker
you know, carrying a Tupperware or to-go container in the car, just making sure there's always an empty, clean one for every time that I go out.
00:12:56
Speaker
I try to make sure to bring that so that way I'm not having to use, you know, the to-go containers.
00:13:01
Speaker
So those little efforts can sometimes bring that sense of,
00:13:06
Speaker
okay, like I don't have to carry that, the weight of my own personal guilt for contributing to the problem.
00:13:15
Speaker
Yeah, yeah.
00:13:16
Speaker
I love that example.
00:13:17
Speaker
That's so great.
00:13:18
Speaker
Because one of the ideas that really guides me is focusing on the direction, not the distance.
00:13:28
Speaker
You know, are you making actions in the direction of the change that you want?
00:13:34
Speaker
as opposed to focusing on how much change is needed.
00:13:37
Speaker
You know, because if you are trying to, you know, reduce or you're trying to stop littering or stop, you know, trash, that's not gonna work.
00:13:49
Speaker
You know, at the end of the day, every day that you go out there trying to pick up trash, you failed.
00:13:53
Speaker
Every day you fail at the end of the day.
00:13:55
Speaker
But if instead you say, did I pick up some trash today?
00:13:59
Speaker
Then every day is a victory and every day is a win.
00:14:01
Speaker
and you can just feel good.
00:14:03
Speaker
And then maybe somebody sees you picking up trash.
00:14:05
Speaker
Maybe somebody sees you with that Tupperware.
00:14:09
Speaker
And so to me, the way to find peace in this process is to... That good feeling is, can I find a victory in this, in aligning myself more to a sense of peace?
00:14:25
Speaker
You know, and we just continually do that like, oh, and that's something that we used to be fine with, you know, eventually like, oh, this doesn't feel good.
00:14:31
Speaker
I can remember buying.
00:14:33
Speaker
I would get deliveries to my apartment every week of a case of one use water bottles because that was the way that helped me drink the most water.
00:14:44
Speaker
until I realized, oh boy, this isn't good.
00:14:46
Speaker
And it started to feel bad once I realized, you know, I learned more in it.
00:14:50
Speaker
You know, you know better, do better.
00:14:52
Speaker
I think it's Maya Angelou.
00:14:54
Speaker
And I think that, so then you just keep adjusting, keep adjusting.
00:14:58
Speaker
And then the direction is what guides you.
00:15:01
Speaker
Mm, know better, do better.
00:15:03
Speaker
I love that so much.
00:15:04
Speaker
That's all about the awareness, right?
00:15:06
Speaker
Because if we don't have the awareness, I'll bring back the fast fashion piece.
00:15:10
Speaker
If we don't understand and have that awareness of what is actually happening, where does clothing come from?
00:15:18
Speaker
You know, where is it going to go?
00:15:20
Speaker
Then we're just going to go, oh, this is cheap and it's easy.
00:15:24
Speaker
But then when we start to see that, oh, maybe there's a, you know, a 10 year old
00:15:29
Speaker
that's making this clothing and that's why it's so cheap.
00:15:32
Speaker
Then it's like, Ooh, I'm not gonna buy that.
00:15:35
Speaker
You know, we start to cultivate that awareness, then we choose differently.
00:15:39
Speaker
And then also I want to, um, I want to just bring it back to Burning Man, right?
00:15:42
Speaker
Because the three of us are, you know, avid burners.
00:15:45
Speaker
We've learned so much.
00:15:46
Speaker
That is the common thread here in this, in this conversation.
00:15:49
Speaker
Burning Man has taught me so much about consumption.
00:15:53
Speaker
because it really is required to consume, buy things for the adventure to the playa.
00:16:03
Speaker
We have to be able to have what we need.
00:16:08
Speaker
And also when we're out there, we start to look at how our consumption is.
00:16:13
Speaker
So I'll give one of the biggest things I've learned from being out there is with water.
00:16:18
Speaker
so learning how to use water more mindfully while out there versus just like you know turning the tap on and just feeling that there's this abundant stream and so over the years i've started to learn much more about where our water comes from right here we are in california our water is coming from colorado
00:16:41
Speaker
It comes from very, very far away.
00:16:43
Speaker
And so it has started to give me this a different experience of every time I turn the tap on or when I take a shower, you know, to be able to consider how far this water has come versus just like not even being mindful anymore.
00:17:00
Speaker
And so thank you, Burning Man, for reminding me to pay attention to where my things come from and learning how to consume in a different capacity.
00:17:09
Speaker
Yeah, I have a similar appreciation for Burning Man in that regard because that's in place where you are bringing back everything that you

Plastic Use Challenges and Solutions

00:17:19
Speaker
bring with you.
00:17:20
Speaker
So yeah, I can bring a case of like plastic water bottles, but that all has to come back with me.
00:17:25
Speaker
And it's just like, I kind of was told that before my very first time.
00:17:29
Speaker
So I was mindful, but even going, you know, going subsequently my trips to Burning Man, I was very mindful.
00:17:35
Speaker
Like, okay, a case of Gatorade is not,
00:17:39
Speaker
What I need is a powder that I can mix into the water.
00:17:44
Speaker
And then I can bring all these five gallon or one gallon water jugs.
00:17:46
Speaker
No, I need to bring a five gallon jug and do that.
00:17:49
Speaker
So it definitely got me thinking.
00:17:52
Speaker
And then also realizing, okay, that works out there.
00:17:56
Speaker
That also works out here.
00:17:57
Speaker
That also works in the default world.
00:17:59
Speaker
So instead of getting water delivered, I would just go pick up like a five gallon jug.
00:18:04
Speaker
make use of that, you know, a glass jug.
00:18:07
Speaker
And again, yeah, it's, it's a little more expensive to get a 50 gallon glass jug, but that beats the plastic.
00:18:12
Speaker
And then there's the, the leaching of the plastic is something to remember with plastic.
00:18:17
Speaker
It's not good for you.
00:18:18
Speaker
Like, it's not good to have stuff that is that you're eating that is in plastic.
00:18:23
Speaker
I just saw an article recently that was like, you have to, the title of the article was, you have to stop microwaving plastic.
00:18:31
Speaker
And by like science, like, you know, journal or something like something like a legit resource was like, we have to stop doing this.
00:18:39
Speaker
And it's like, yeah, people have been saying that for quite a while.
00:18:42
Speaker
But to see this in the mainstream.
00:18:46
Speaker
Uh, you know, it's a different kind of thing.
00:18:47
Speaker
So, so these, you know, these mindful actions when it comes to, you know, how we live in the world, they are picking up.
00:18:55
Speaker
And, you know, when I see, when I see things like that, I do get a little bit inspired.
00:18:58
Speaker
It's like, okay, it's like people are, are getting hip to the point that it's actually making headlines in like mainstream publications.
00:19:06
Speaker
So this is, so this is a good thing.
00:19:08
Speaker
Um, yeah, absolutely.
00:19:11
Speaker
I know I personally love to drink out of glass.
00:19:14
Speaker
Yeah.
00:19:14
Speaker
Mm hmm.
00:19:15
Speaker
Yeah, it's my favorite.
00:19:16
Speaker
You know, and you know, you're really sparking something here for me to around our purchasing power.
00:19:22
Speaker
Right?
00:19:23
Speaker
If you if more and more of us use our dollars to vote, right?
00:19:27
Speaker
If you buy that
00:19:29
Speaker
the glass over the plastic, or if we're spending our money at farmers markets, or we're, we're buying in a different way, then the, the company start to hear what we want.
00:19:41
Speaker
Right.
00:19:41
Speaker
It kind of goes back to the, um, I think McDonald's started selling green juice because that's what people were wanting.
00:19:48
Speaker
You know, I was like, oh, wow, that's like, that's a pretty big deal.
00:19:52
Speaker
You know?
00:19:52
Speaker
So the more of us that use our,
00:19:55
Speaker
take action with our dollars and what we're actually wanting to buy, then there's going to be more of that.

Driving Change with Purchasing Power

00:20:01
Speaker
If we put money in an industry that we don't support and believe in, then that's not actually going to make a difference.
00:20:06
Speaker
But if we put money in the direction of the companies that are doing really good for the world, then that may actually start to make a difference.
00:20:15
Speaker
Yeah.
00:20:16
Speaker
And I think that's a really important thing to remember because often those companies have to charge more.
00:20:22
Speaker
you know, because they are to do things in the morally ideal ways is more expensive.
00:20:30
Speaker
And so you, if you remind yourself that as you spend more, you know, as you, when you see the Dr. Bronner's soap, and then there's a new cheap knockoff one, you go, well, this one's cheaper, but I know that Bronner's is doing everything they can to be conscious with, with their decisions.
00:20:47
Speaker
Like they just, they're now doing a cardboard refill things so that you don't even have to get their plastic bottles anymore.
00:20:52
Speaker
i just saw that now but and so i think that that uh when that's something i struggle with is i have old patterns of
00:21:03
Speaker
save money, save money, save money, save money, save money, you know?
00:21:05
Speaker
And, and so I have to go, wait a minute, is there another aspect to this decision that I can find some satisfaction or peace with beyond just the, yeah, cheap as possible.
00:21:17
Speaker
You know, if I can go, oh no, actually this feels good because I'm voting.
00:21:21
Speaker
I'm saying I want more of this in the world, which is, that's a, it's a struggle for me and for anybody that is trying to balance their, their checkbook.
00:21:31
Speaker
Just breathing with that one.
00:21:32
Speaker
That's a big one.
00:21:34
Speaker
I wanted to say one thing about the, you know, the benefit of going to Burning Man and having all your access to your convenience removed.
00:21:44
Speaker
It really is helpful to be, it helps you become aware of where's your water come from?
00:21:49
Speaker
Where does your food come from?
00:21:50
Speaker
What are you gonna do with this packaging?
00:21:52
Speaker
Because especially in an urban environment, there's so much convenience that you really,
00:21:58
Speaker
Like where does water come from?
00:21:59
Speaker
The faucet.
00:22:00
Speaker
Where does meat come from?
00:22:01
Speaker
The grocery store.
00:22:02
Speaker
Like you really are disconnected from the world.
00:22:09
Speaker
And it becomes easier and easier to make decisions purely out of convenience.
00:22:14
Speaker
I was talking with my partner, Lisa, and she said that when she lived in a rural area in Big Sur,
00:22:22
Speaker
the roads, she had to pay every time she used the road.
00:22:26
Speaker
And it really made her aware of like, well, everything I do has impact, everything.
00:22:31
Speaker
And so you start to make your decisions based on the ripples of impact that you do.
00:22:37
Speaker
But when you're in your house and ordering from Amazon, God, are we going to talk about Amazon?
00:22:41
Speaker
Because, oh, boy, I have a lot of shame about that.
00:22:42
Speaker
You know, it's like so convenient.
00:22:46
Speaker
You have to bring to front of mind the other factors in order to kind of convince yourself like it's not worth it.
00:22:54
Speaker
Yeah.
00:22:55
Speaker
And I feel compelled to address what some people might have gone, gone to mentally.
00:23:02
Speaker
When we talked about Burning Man and how to be conscious about our water usage and things like that.
00:23:07
Speaker
And I can, I just hear the, I can, I can almost hear the peanut gallery and in my mind being like, if you were that, if you were that concerned, maybe you wouldn't go to Burning Man in the first place.
00:23:17
Speaker
Ouch.
00:23:18
Speaker
Oh yeah.
00:23:18
Speaker
There's a big discussion about that online.
00:23:20
Speaker
That's a different, that's a different conversation.
00:23:22
Speaker
And I, I'm happy to participate in that conversation.
00:23:26
Speaker
I think we have before we have before we will again, I'm sure.
00:23:31
Speaker
But yeah, but it brings to mind like, okay, so.
00:23:34
Speaker
In this era of late stage capitalism, like what, what can we do and what is, what is worth doing?
00:23:42
Speaker
I feel like we've all heard the revelation, I guess you'd say like, okay, so just so you know, like your recycling is not actually getting recycled.
00:23:51
Speaker
It's like,
00:23:53
Speaker
What?
00:23:53
Speaker
And yeah, that's that's like a whole thing and how like we were under the assumption like our stuff is getting separated at the at the plant and all this stuff.
00:24:01
Speaker
And turns out not so much.
00:24:03
Speaker
So.
00:24:06
Speaker
That's so infuriating.
00:24:09
Speaker
And it's worse than just that knowledge because it starts to make you really get that doesn't matter.
00:24:17
Speaker
Or am I just be giving these options?
00:24:19
Speaker
Is this like a knob and a dial that doesn't do anything, but it just keeps me busy and makes me feel like I'm doing something?
00:24:25
Speaker
Well, you know what it brings up for me?
00:24:28
Speaker
I have chills right now feeling it.
00:24:30
Speaker
It's like, there's that like,
00:24:33
Speaker
that anger, that frustration that we've been lied to, and I've been thinking I'm doing a good thing, but I'm not.
00:24:39
Speaker
Well, using that fuel for new positive solutions.
00:24:44
Speaker
You know, like I actually saw a really great ad for this new type of laundry detergent because, you know, the laundry detergent bottles for a long time have been this big, huge jug, thick plastic, right?
00:24:57
Speaker
And a lot of these companies are now making tablets.
00:25:00
Speaker
you know, that come in a paper box or a small bag, you know, and the ad was actually about that.
00:25:07
Speaker
And it was like showing all these jugs.
00:25:09
Speaker
And this woman was like, so mad.
00:25:10
Speaker
And she's like, but guess what?
00:25:13
Speaker
We'll find a way.
00:25:14
Speaker
Here's a new solution.
00:25:16
Speaker
Right.
00:25:16
Speaker
And so that's what I want to keep focusing on is new solutions and purchasing from that place to shampoo companies are doing that now.
00:25:25
Speaker
toothpaste companies are doing that now.
00:25:27
Speaker
A lot of the packaging companies are finding new solutions.
00:25:31
Speaker
And it's up to us to put forth the effort to find those companies and support them, put our dollars into them and start to do life in a different way.
00:25:41
Speaker
Right.
00:25:42
Speaker
There's also another really great, um,
00:25:45
Speaker
a store here in Encinitas called the Nada Shop.
00:25:49
Speaker
And I've been seeing them pop up around.
00:25:51
Speaker
I don't think it's the same name, but there's basically refill shops, right?
00:25:58
Speaker
This store has like huge barrels of laundry soap that you come and you just bring your bottle.
00:26:04
Speaker
They've got the huge barrels of all the things that you can get in bulk.
00:26:08
Speaker
And it's just such a great concept because then we're not having to get a new bottle every single

Innovative Sustainable Shopping

00:26:15
Speaker
time.
00:26:15
Speaker
All the cleaners that we get, all of the things that we keep in our house that we need, we can just keep refilling and finding ways to clean.
00:26:22
Speaker
duplicate.
00:26:24
Speaker
Right.
00:26:24
Speaker
So that's where like, I start to feel a deeper sense of hope and inspiration.
00:26:30
Speaker
New solutions are here.
00:26:31
Speaker
They're coming.
00:26:32
Speaker
It's up to me to find them and to, like you said, Halcyon be willing to invest.
00:26:38
Speaker
Right.
00:26:38
Speaker
Because right now, yeah, it might be a little bit more expensive to do it that way.
00:26:43
Speaker
But really, like, what do I care about?
00:26:45
Speaker
What am I committed to as the earth?
00:26:48
Speaker
Yeah.
00:26:49
Speaker
And as you said, I mean, it is really sending a message, you know, that the a corporation does not have the ability to make a decision based on what's right.
00:26:58
Speaker
It has to make a decision based on what the market is telling it to do.
00:27:02
Speaker
And I had an experience when I was working for a corporate company, we had a food delivery company.
00:27:07
Speaker
And one of our incentives was we wanted to do avoid having all that disposable throwaway packaging.
00:27:14
Speaker
You know, when you get like a meal delivery service, there's all this styrofoam and things.
00:27:18
Speaker
And so we invented a, a reusable cooler that would come to your door and you take the food out and we would pick it up the next day, like an old school milk bottle.
00:27:28
Speaker
Now I was filled with all this idealism and,
00:27:31
Speaker
And then when it came time to to manufacture it.
00:27:35
Speaker
We couldn't justify making in the US, we had to make it in China, where their laws are more lax and it was so much cheaper.
00:27:43
Speaker
And so that was frustrating.
00:27:45
Speaker
And then when we
00:27:47
Speaker
got time to do the food deliveries, there still was a certain amount of packaging and plastic that was required to satisfy health codes and things.
00:27:56
Speaker
And so there's this, but if a company knows that there are people out there that are speaking with their dollars saying, we're looking for these solutions, then that is the only way that a company can, can get their budgets in line that can convince their boards to make those decisions.
00:28:11
Speaker
I mean, there's some companies like Dr. Bronner's where they're privately run.
00:28:15
Speaker
And they can make a decision saying, we're going to do this based on our morals.
00:28:18
Speaker
And what's awesome is that more and more the market is saying, that's what we want.
00:28:23
Speaker
We're willing to pay more for that.
00:28:25
Speaker
And so when we have more and more examples of that, that starts to filter into the corporate cultures and communications, but it's, I can't underestimate or understate how much it is required for the market to see what we want.
00:28:42
Speaker
Yeah.
00:28:42
Speaker
Yeah, and there's a reason why this stuff is popping up.
00:28:45
Speaker
There's a storefront that has opened up near me, like the one Betsy mentioned, where they have these big barrels of laundry detergent and hand soap and shampoo and conditioner, all these other things that are eco-friendly, but it's all refill stations.
00:29:03
Speaker
And you can refill 20 different products.
00:29:06
Speaker
Yeah.
00:29:06
Speaker
And that store was not there five years ago.
00:29:09
Speaker
And there's a reason this is popping up is because there is a demand.
00:29:13
Speaker
They're not trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist.
00:29:17
Speaker
Like, these are business people who are like, no, this is something that is wanted.
00:29:22
Speaker
And I've seen multiple people, like maybe not a line going in and out there, but that place is always busy.
00:29:28
Speaker
So...
00:29:29
Speaker
So it's happening.
00:29:30
Speaker
Human civilization is not this static thing.
00:29:34
Speaker
It is always moving.
00:29:35
Speaker
It is always evolving in one direction or the other.
00:29:39
Speaker
And I feel, and it can sometimes be in two different directions at the same time, but I definitely feel like we are getting...
00:29:47
Speaker
We are moving to a place of more awareness, more consciousness about this sort of thing.
00:29:53
Speaker
So while it can be like a two steps forward, one step back, I do.
00:29:57
Speaker
I do just the evidence is there that we're we're trending up with awareness and with how we are consuming things.
00:30:04
Speaker
I was in I was in Sweden a few years ago.
00:30:08
Speaker
And.
00:30:09
Speaker
It's wild.
00:30:10
Speaker
Like throughout the country, I was in three major cities over the course of a month and kind of wild to see how pervasive the whole reusing and re recycling things like there was not a single store I went to that offered bags of any kind, paper or plastic.
00:30:25
Speaker
Like if you didn't have your bag, you're just like,
00:30:28
Speaker
And I'm the American who didn't know right away.
00:30:30
Speaker
And they're just like looked at me.
00:30:31
Speaker
And I had I bought a bunch of stuff.
00:30:34
Speaker
And it's at the end of the thing.
00:30:35
Speaker
And I figured I just figured there'd be a bag at the end of it.
00:30:37
Speaker
And there's nothing there.
00:30:38
Speaker
The guy in the checkers is looking at me just like shake his head.
00:30:41
Speaker
It's like, wow, would you like to purchase a bag?
00:30:44
Speaker
And I was like, yes, yes.
00:30:46
Speaker
And so and everybody's everybody's got a bag.
00:30:49
Speaker
And it's one of those things where.
00:30:52
Speaker
I'm starting to see some... There was a store recently that I saw around here that had a big sign, like, we do not offer bags, so please bring your own.
00:31:01
Speaker
It was like... I'm not sure even what kind of store it was, but I saw that and I was like, yes!
00:31:06
Speaker
It was starting to happen.
00:31:09
Speaker
Another thing, seeing a lot of natural gas buses, buses running on natural gas, more and more hybrid vehicles.
00:31:18
Speaker
We can talk about Tesla, how that's good or bad, but
00:31:22
Speaker
California, the freeways are just covered with like, I mean, every third or fourth car is an electric car.
00:31:28
Speaker
So, and, you know, they say like, you know, across the country, people are like, some people like, you know, California has got a varied rep depending on where, what state you're in, but it does tend to lead the way with the country.
00:31:40
Speaker
Like you see things here before you see in the rest of the country and you do see it in the rest of the country eventually.
00:31:45
Speaker
So I see, you know,
00:31:47
Speaker
Here in this country, we are definitely trending in a more conscious consumerism, you know, into an area of more conscious consumerism.
00:31:55
Speaker
So that is something that gives me, you know, gives me a large amount of hope, shall we say.
00:32:01
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:02
Speaker
Yeah.
00:32:02
Speaker
I love that.
00:32:04
Speaker
I feel like I want to add something that I've been seeing happening that's been really inspiring.

Clothing Exchanges and Community Reuse

00:32:08
Speaker
And I'm so grateful I've been a part of it for the last decade is clothing exchanges.
00:32:15
Speaker
Clothing exchanges really promote reusing and reducing the buying new
00:32:23
Speaker
and getting things into production or use more.
00:32:28
Speaker
I love clothing exchanges so much because it really does help to get these things that we have bought over the years to be used again and again and again.
00:32:39
Speaker
And one of the things I love about it and have learned about it too, instead of just donating your clothes to a thrift store or something, consignment or whatnot,
00:32:49
Speaker
when you put it into a clothing exchange, it's more likely it's going to get worn versus going to a thrift store because a thrift store, it might sit on the rack for a long, long time.
00:33:00
Speaker
And a lot of times those things just get put into the landfill.
00:33:05
Speaker
And one thing I've also learned too, there's certain organizations like Goodwill, they provide a lot of wonderful job opportunities for people.
00:33:12
Speaker
They do have some good things about their organization, but they also do waste a lot.
00:33:17
Speaker
So there's, you know, a lot of things that get donated don't actually get put on the shelves because they go right to the landfill.
00:33:25
Speaker
And so the clothing exchanges really provide not only that opportunity for recycling and reducing, but it also brings people together.
00:33:34
Speaker
It really kind of creates a sense of community.
00:33:37
Speaker
I know personally here where we've been doing it, it has been so fun.
00:33:42
Speaker
It has been so uplifting to the women that I know and love.
00:33:46
Speaker
I've seen men do it before too.
00:33:49
Speaker
It's just a really wonderful way to be able to
00:33:53
Speaker
continue to reinvent ourselves, right?
00:33:55
Speaker
Because we love new things.
00:33:57
Speaker
We love to be able to have, you know, the freshness of our closets and try new things.
00:34:02
Speaker
And it also helps us save money, right?
00:34:05
Speaker
Instead of having to go buy new clothes to feel a sense of newness in our wardrobe, we can actually
00:34:11
Speaker
lean into our community and get what we need.
00:34:15
Speaker
And I personally have experienced this now that I don't spend as much money on the basics of my clothes, then I can actually put the my money towards designers and local people that are making clothing that are going to be a little more expensive, but I'm not spending as much on all the other
00:34:36
Speaker
junk clothes from these, you know, malls or whatever.
00:34:40
Speaker
Not that I shop at malls, but I used to, you know, and so it's really, it feels so much more rewarding to me to be able to have that ability to buy from really amazing clothing designers and then get my other needs met through trading and exchanging and reusing in clothing exchanges.
00:34:59
Speaker
Yeah.
00:35:00
Speaker
That's awesome.

Mindful Donation Practices

00:35:01
Speaker
I can't tell you how many times I have complimented a woman's outfit and had them say, I got this at one of Betsy's clothing swaps.
00:35:10
Speaker
And I think it's important to also recognize that it is
00:35:15
Speaker
wonderful to get things to goodwill rather than a landfill or at least try goodwill because you're right it's not um not everything gets taken and used and sold um but it it's the reduce reuse recycle idea you know that that if you can try not to assume that someone is going to want your discarded stuff
00:35:39
Speaker
Totally.
00:35:40
Speaker
Well, and you do something really great too, Halcyon.
00:35:42
Speaker
So the first Saturdays has been going for what?
00:35:46
Speaker
11 years?
00:35:46
Speaker
13.
00:35:48
Speaker
13 years, which is really beautiful because it's a way to contribute to people that are in need and taking certain donations, blankets and tents or socks, you know, nicely, lightly used things.
00:36:02
Speaker
You know, I had a experience recently where I was with somebody who does not think in that way.
00:36:08
Speaker
He is
00:36:09
Speaker
custom and conditioned and programmed to just throw things away.
00:36:13
Speaker
He was cleaning out his garage and he just put everything in the trash cans.
00:36:18
Speaker
And I was like, my heart just got so squeezed.
00:36:21
Speaker
And I was like, really?
00:36:22
Speaker
Like, you don't want to just, you know, take this to the landfill or to the donation.
00:36:27
Speaker
It's just going to go to the landfill.
00:36:28
Speaker
He's like, I just don't have time for that.
00:36:30
Speaker
And I'm like, what?
00:36:32
Speaker
You don't have time for that?
00:36:33
Speaker
What do you mean?
00:36:34
Speaker
He's like, I just, you know, I just don't, I don't care so much.
00:36:38
Speaker
And I was like, Oh my god, okay, well, can I take it out of your trash bin?
00:36:43
Speaker
And he's like, I mean, I guess if you want to.
00:36:46
Speaker
And it was a really hard conversation to have with this person.
00:36:51
Speaker
But then later,
00:36:53
Speaker
Like a couple months later, we had a conversation about it and he started going, you know what I realized, like I do need to start considering just it's not that hard.
00:37:02
Speaker
And then he ended up donating to, I think one of your charities or another homeless charity here in Southern California.
00:37:11
Speaker
And it was like, oh, okay.
00:37:15
Speaker
Because like not to to generalize, but far more women's clothing is donated than men's clothing to for Saturdays.
00:37:25
Speaker
You know, there's women from my observations, there is an.
00:37:31
Speaker
an easier time to buy, get rid of, buy, get rid of, whereas men seem to not donate quite

Encouraging Mindful Consumption

00:37:37
Speaker
as often.
00:37:37
Speaker
So if you've got some gently used men's clothing in San Diego, please reach out.
00:37:43
Speaker
I would love to redistribute it for you.
00:37:46
Speaker
I think some of that is attributed to, I think women in general like to kind of cycle through their closets a little bit.
00:37:55
Speaker
I think they're a little more mindful of like what they want to wear and what they feel like they're ready to let go of.
00:38:00
Speaker
It's like, I need to make some space for me.
00:38:01
Speaker
I know my partner is very much like, I'm looking to get rid of this, bringing something new.
00:38:06
Speaker
Like they're very, they're more mindful.
00:38:07
Speaker
Whereas me, I'm,
00:38:09
Speaker
I will hold on to something.
00:38:12
Speaker
It's going to fall off my body before I give it up.
00:38:15
Speaker
He's wearing a Thundercats t-shirt as he says that.
00:38:20
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:20
Speaker
That's since you were like 13 or what?
00:38:23
Speaker
Yeah.
00:38:23
Speaker
Well, it's like I had one that fell off my body and then I replaced it with another one that is going to fall off my body soon.
00:38:30
Speaker
So, but yeah, it's important when we,
00:38:33
Speaker
we approach this kind of thing, you know, there's a saying that goes something along the lines like, do not let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
00:38:40
Speaker
And so if we can't do something the way we feel that it could be done or should be done perfectly, don't let that prevent us from doing something.
00:38:50
Speaker
The fact that, you know, things might not get recycled.
00:38:54
Speaker
It's like, well, you know, some of it is going to get recycled.
00:38:57
Speaker
Maybe not all of it, maybe, but some of it will.
00:38:59
Speaker
So that should not prevent us from making the attempt.
00:39:03
Speaker
Yeah, so we can, you know, do what we can and we should do something.
00:39:07
Speaker
It's like, oh, I just don't have the time for it.
00:39:08
Speaker
It's like, well, you have time.
00:39:10
Speaker
You're going to spend your time doing something.
00:39:11
Speaker
Right, exactly.
00:39:14
Speaker
Yeah, you know, the little things that we can do can make a big difference.
00:39:18
Speaker
You know, if we all do little things like I'm going to give an example, I, you know, have seen people throw a great pair of pants away because the button fell off.
00:39:30
Speaker
It's like, wow, okay, learn how to sew a button.
00:39:35
Speaker
The little thing and that can make a big difference in your life and in the world and might not seem like it, you know, but when we can
00:39:43
Speaker
really put into practice these little things that we can continue to make that difference, whether that's donating to a charity or choosing to look at our options in the grocery store based on how much plastic there is, right?
00:40:02
Speaker
I love doing that actually in the grocery store when I'm shopping.
00:40:06
Speaker
I make my decisions based on the packaging.
00:40:10
Speaker
You know that because oftentimes there's certain things that have like a lot more packaging than others.
00:40:15
Speaker
I'm like, okay, you know, I'm going to choose to buy something that is less plastic or that's in the cardboard instead, you know, and those little things that we each make those little changes every day.
00:40:26
Speaker
In every way, it's an affirmation for you every day in every way, I am making positive decisions on using my purchasing power to make this world a better place.
00:40:36
Speaker
Little things can make a big difference, you know, and also, you know, using some of that fire for fuel.
00:40:42
Speaker
If there's frustration around certain things, then, okay, I'm going to start to make a difference in my own life by bringing that container or by going to a thrift store or, you know, finding a new way to do something.
00:40:58
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:40:59
Speaker
Yeah, I feel like there's probably a lot more that we can touch on, like different things that we can do.
00:41:06
Speaker
But we're coming to the close.
00:41:07
Speaker
So I'd love to close it up with some sparks and also make an invitation to you guys out there listening.

Community Sharing and Inspiration

00:41:13
Speaker
If there's little things that you're doing, let us know.
00:41:16
Speaker
Share in the...
00:41:18
Speaker
in the comments on the youtube channel or send a little message to us individually or on our facebook post we love having this content this conversation continue so what are the things that you are doing that uh that makes you feel really good about your conscious consumption i love it indeed so um yeah well how do we uh
00:41:42
Speaker
In that regard, Betsy, how can we find you out in the world?
00:41:45
Speaker
I got a closing spark.
00:41:47
Speaker
I got a closing spark.
00:41:48
Speaker
It's burning in me.
00:41:50
Speaker
I got to share this closing

Balancing Consumption Impact

00:41:51
Speaker
spark.
00:41:51
Speaker
Yeah, I can see it.
00:41:52
Speaker
It's a fan in your claims.
00:41:55
Speaker
Oh, shit.
00:41:56
Speaker
So this topic brings me to something I think about often, which is that there is this spectrum of
00:42:03
Speaker
that we have to find our sweet spot on in terms of the impact that we have in the world, how much negative and positive impact we have.
00:42:13
Speaker
And I think about on one end, there's a faith called Jainism, and they are people who wear a mask so that they don't accidentally inhale an insect in their mouth.
00:42:24
Speaker
They sweep in front of them so that they don't step on anything in front of them.
00:42:27
Speaker
They only take fruit that falls from a tree.
00:42:29
Speaker
They don't pick it.
00:42:30
Speaker
They don't eat something like salary that would kill the plant.
00:42:33
Speaker
The absolute least impact you could have on the planet.
00:42:37
Speaker
And then on the far other side is someone who's like throwing their beer bottles in the ocean and throwing their cigarettes out the window and just doesn't give a fuck.
00:42:45
Speaker
And I think that to me, all the way on the Janus side, it feels like
00:42:52
Speaker
a martyrdom.
00:42:53
Speaker
It feels like a sacrifice of the experience of being a human.
00:42:56
Speaker
And it's like not, I think it's squandering the conscious experience we have to be alive.
00:43:03
Speaker
So where can we find ourselves on that spectrum where we feel good?
00:43:08
Speaker
And I think that that place changes, you know, as you learn more about fast fashion as plastic bottles, you start to go, oh, you know what, this doesn't feel good anymore.
00:43:16
Speaker
I need to change my behavior.
00:43:18
Speaker
And you witness someone else doing, having, bringing their salsa container and you go, you know what?
00:43:23
Speaker
Now it doesn't feel good to take that plastic anymore.
00:43:26
Speaker
And so you just find the place that feels good to you and, and just focus on the direction you're going at the distance.
00:43:34
Speaker
Yeah.
00:43:35
Speaker
Well said.
00:43:36
Speaker
Well said.
00:43:36
Speaker
Sure.
00:43:37
Speaker
So yeah, my, my closing spark is

Emotional Benefits of Living Mindfully

00:43:42
Speaker
yeah.
00:43:42
Speaker
Just looking around, looking around my place,
00:43:46
Speaker
I can see like we've taken, we've taken the steps to, to reduce our consumption and to live more mindfully and reduce our use of plastic and things like that.
00:43:56
Speaker
And that is something that no matter what is going on in my day, there's, there's something like that's kind of sits in the background that makes me feel that makes me feel good.
00:44:07
Speaker
That inspires me to know that my partner and I are,
00:44:11
Speaker
are living in a way that feels good.
00:44:14
Speaker
And there's all sorts of things that can be like, oh, that's, you know, this, this part of life is a downer, but this other part of life we're like handling to the best of our ability.
00:44:22
Speaker
And that is something that, you know, I can wake up into and feel good about, and I can go to sleep at night feeling good about, you know,
00:44:29
Speaker
our impact on the world and that we are actually mindful about that and so you know all we're you know i think all any of us are trying to do is be happy in this world and there are little these little victories like that that can really inspire and inspire us to to know that we're we're we're doing good in some way and some ways are bigger some ways are smaller and so
00:44:53
Speaker
You know, the idea that there's no, you know, no true altruism.
00:44:56
Speaker
Like the things we do, we always, we do most things because we want to feel good.
00:45:00
Speaker
And this is something that we feel good about.
00:45:03
Speaker
And regardless of the impact of the, of it, that it has on the planet, we feel good about it.
00:45:07
Speaker
So we do it.
00:45:08
Speaker
If it feels good, do it.
00:45:10
Speaker
Yeah.
00:45:11
Speaker
And I'll, I'll share one last spark too.
00:45:13
Speaker
It's just that moment where I have my finger over the button thinking about purchasing that easy little click.

Mindful Purchasing Decisions

00:45:24
Speaker
Checking in.
00:45:26
Speaker
Is this something that I really need?
00:45:29
Speaker
Where's this coming from?
00:45:30
Speaker
And where is it going to go?
00:45:32
Speaker
Really taking a moment to pause before just order, order, order, order.
00:45:41
Speaker
Checking in, checking in, checking in.
00:45:43

00:48:16
Speaker
And that's, that's the feedback I'm getting as well.
00:48:18
Speaker
So Betsy, bring us home with a pertinent affirmation for today.
00:48:27
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes.
00:48:28
Speaker
All right.
00:48:29
Speaker
So closing the eyes, taking a nice deep breath.
00:48:34
Speaker
repeating these affirmations,
00:48:39
Speaker
I am mindful, I am mindful.
00:48:42
