In this episode, Elias shares his experience living through Hurricane Milton and the lessons we can all take into our coaching practices. Some may say that Presence is the most important competency since, without presence, there is nothing we can truly do.

Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Scultori.

Impact of Hurricane Milton

00:00:15
Speaker
Hello coaches, thank you for listening to this podcast and for being here.
00:00:21
Speaker
I missed you last week, right?
00:00:24
Speaker
As you may know, we had Hurricane Milton crossing Florida, the state of Florida, and that disrupted my routine a little bit.
00:00:38
Speaker
That's why I wasn't able to record a podcast last week.
00:00:41
Speaker
But here we are.
00:00:43
Speaker
and continuing with our conversation.
00:00:46
Speaker
And I would love to utilize this time here today to talk about the lessons from this hurricane.
00:00:53
Speaker
Hurricane is a major event and lots of disruptions.
00:00:57
Speaker
And of course, as a coach,
00:01:00
Speaker
with a coach mindset, you know me by now, I'm already thinking of what are the lessons, what are the insights that we can have from an experience like that.
00:01:16
Speaker
And I have a couple to share with you

Coaching Amidst the Storm

00:01:18
Speaker
here.
00:01:18
Speaker
I think that something for us to keep in mind.
00:01:22
Speaker
I remember specifically two moments before
00:01:25
Speaker
in this whole process, this whole period where the hurricane was about to get here and when the hurricane was here that I would love to share with you.
00:01:37
Speaker
The first one is prior to the hurricane, the day before the hurricane landed in Florida.
00:01:45
Speaker
And, you know, if you've been through a hurricane, you know that the preparation, what happens before the hurricane can be quite stressful.
00:01:57
Speaker
There are a lot of things, decisions to make and things to prepare and to make sure that we have enough food, do we have enough water, do we have flashlights, are we in a place where we need to evacuate, what are the authorities saying, where is the hurricane going to pass, what is the hurricane track, what is the intensity, there is so much going on.
00:02:22
Speaker
And it can become quite stressful to pay attention to all of that in preparation for something that we don't have much power over.
00:02:33
Speaker
And I remember the day before the hurricane landed in Florida, I was still working and I had my clients and I had specifically a coaching, a coach training class that I was leading.
00:02:50
Speaker
for our Prime Coaching Academy and it was one of our practice studios where the students come and coach each other and receive feedback from the facilitator in the moment and it's a wonderful opportunity for us to put in practice the concept of coaching.
00:03:15
Speaker
But in that particular class, what we had planned is that I was going to give a coaching demonstration.
00:03:23
Speaker
And when we are giving a coaching demonstration, we want to be at our best.
00:03:27
Speaker
We really want to demonstrate the best of our skills and abilities to the students so that they have a good experience and a good sample of a good coaching conversation.
00:03:41
Speaker
And I was very preoccupied with the hurricane.
00:03:47
Speaker
And five minutes before the class started, I was thinking, like, how is this going to go?
00:03:55
Speaker
Because am I going to really be able to be fully present here?
00:04:00
Speaker
Am I going to be able to bring my best to this moment?
00:04:07
Speaker
But I was committed.
00:04:08
Speaker
So we went into the class, we started the class, and then it came the moment for me to start the demo, and I was coaching one of the students.
00:04:17
Speaker
And we started the coaching conversation, and I have to tell you, like,
00:04:23
Speaker
two seconds into the conversation, I was already in.
00:04:28
Speaker
I was completely in.
00:04:31
Speaker
And all of a sudden the storm became secondary, tertiary.
00:04:38
Speaker
The storm became something at a distance.
00:04:42
Speaker
The stress was not top of my mind anymore.
00:04:48
Speaker
I was there for my client.
00:04:51
Speaker
I was there for my students.
00:04:53
Speaker
I was paying attention and much more curious about what was happening with this person in front of me than any of the storm that was not even here yet.

Lessons in Presence

00:05:08
Speaker
So that was a moment for me that I became very conscious of the power of choice and the power of presence.
00:05:21
Speaker
This moment when what is about to happen, but it's not here yet.
00:05:27
Speaker
It's not the most important.
00:05:32
Speaker
It's not priority.
00:05:35
Speaker
What is priority is what is happening here today, in this moment.
00:05:41
Speaker
And I was able to go through the whole demo, and it was a wonderful conversation, and we had some discussions after that.
00:05:49
Speaker
And I only mentioned to the students about the stress and the storm at the end of the class, because I didn't want to distract from the whole process.
00:06:00
Speaker
But I so appreciated that opportunity to really practice presence and notice the power of putting things in perspective.
00:06:10
Speaker
The other moment was when the storm was here.
00:06:12
Speaker
So this was the day after.
00:06:14
Speaker
And throughout the day, I could see the winds getting stronger and stronger until in the evening, around 7.30 p.m., the storm was really here.
00:06:29
Speaker
I think the storm landed a few miles south of St.
00:06:32
Speaker
Petersburg and around that particular time.
00:06:38
Speaker
And it was about two hours or two or three hours that the winds were very, very intense.
00:06:45
Speaker
In the middle of that, my power went out.
00:06:48
Speaker
And so I couldn't watch TV, do any work or read or anything.
00:06:55
Speaker
I couldn't do anything.
00:06:56
Speaker
I was just...
00:06:58
Speaker
in silence and in the darkness and just noticing outside the reflections and the shadows of what was happening outside and I could see that it was very strong, there was a lot of noise as well and I had a choice right there at that moment, I think I mentioned this in one of our prime briefs the choice to make at that moment do I pay attention, do I focus on the fear
00:07:24
Speaker
Do I focus on the concern?
00:07:26
Speaker
What's going to happen to the house?
00:07:27
Speaker
Are the trees going to fall?
00:07:30
Speaker
What's going to happen tomorrow?
00:07:33
Speaker
Is the water, the rain?
00:07:36
Speaker
Or am I going to be present to what is happening here in this moment and experience nature?
00:07:43
Speaker
And I decided right there to just experience nature, be in the moment.
00:07:48
Speaker
So I remember clearly looking through the window and seeing the resilience of these trees around my house and seeing how the power of nature, how small we are, and just being in that moment.
00:08:07
Speaker
There wasn't much I could do at that point, right?
00:08:11
Speaker
And to be present to what's happening now.
00:08:16
Speaker
And I think that this is a wonderful lesson for all of us.
00:08:20
Speaker
I mentioned this in episode 13 of this podcast, Mindful Coaching.
00:08:29
Speaker
The idea of right here, the idea of our brains creating thoughts and ideas and insights and projections and being in the future or being in the past.
00:08:41
Speaker
And we have a choice to be in the moment.
00:08:45
Speaker
And this is a wonderful exercise, a wonderful practice for us as coaches.
00:08:49
Speaker
Not only in the moment that we are in the coaching conversation with our clients, but every moment, every minute of our lives, we have a choice.
00:09:06
Speaker
Where are we going to put our focus on?
00:09:09
Speaker
And I think that this is an important practice for all of us because we can't expect that we are only going to have that moment and that choice when we are in a coaching conversation.
00:09:20
Speaker
This is a practice that we do on a daily basis.
00:09:25
Speaker
At every single moment of our lives, where do we want to be?
00:09:30
Speaker
Do we want to project?
00:09:31
Speaker
Do we want to be on or focus on something that is not here yet?
00:09:37
Speaker
Do we want to put our attention on things that have happened in the past that are no longer here?
00:09:44
Speaker
Or do we want to put our attention
00:09:46
Speaker
our minds in what is happening in the moment.
00:09:50
Speaker
That is a practice that we, it's a muscle that we build that when we come to our coaching conversation, then we are able to fully be present in the moment.
00:10:01
Speaker
And I would stretch, I would go even further beyond being in the moment, being when we are in the moment in the coaching conversation, where, what is priority?
00:10:12
Speaker
Where are we putting our attention to?
00:10:16
Speaker
Is it the story that the client is telling us?
00:10:19
Speaker
Is it the situation, the dilemma that the client may bring to the coaching conversation?
00:10:26
Speaker
Or are we choosing to put our focus and our attention on the client?
00:10:35
Speaker
And that is the transformative aspect of coaching.
00:10:40
Speaker
When we are really creating a space for the client to be in the spotlight and the situations that the client may present, they are just the backdrop.
00:10:53
Speaker
That is the transformative aspect of coaching.
00:10:56
Speaker
So it's an encouragement and a challenge that I give to you.
00:11:06
Speaker
What is the choice that you're making every moment?
00:11:09
Speaker
What is the awareness?
00:11:11
Speaker
How aware are you of the choices that you can make?
00:11:17
Speaker
How much are you believing in the constructs of your mind and how much are you paying attention to what is real?
00:11:30
Speaker
Presence takes humility.
00:11:33
Speaker
The humility for us to put the other as priority.
00:11:41
Speaker
And put ourselves and put our minds as secondary.
00:11:46
Speaker
But the client is the most important.
00:11:50
Speaker
And it's a choice that we make every day.
00:11:55
Speaker
Some people say that presence perhaps can be considered as the most important competency.
00:12:01
Speaker
It's something to consider because without presence...
00:12:08
Speaker
without fully being there, we cannot do anything else.
00:12:15
Speaker
We cannot even be ethical if we are not truly present.

Call to Action and Conclusion

00:12:19
Speaker
So it always starts with a choice that we make to be present to our clients and not be distracted by anybody, anything else.
00:12:29
Speaker
