Oh, if only games were 30 seconds long, hey? Hello and welcome to the Daily Brentford Podcast with myself, Daniel, where today I will be reviewing our defeat at Tottenham on Saturday. Just before we get going, guys, we're a brand new company, so we are looking for your support over the coming season and beyond, as we look to bring you the best and most in-depth coverage across the entire network. Whether this is a five-star or on your favourite podcasting platform or a recommendation to your friends. We are very grateful for any support that we are able to receive. So then we are back and we are reviewing the Tottenham game at the weekend. First place to start, I guess, is the team news that dropped within in the week prior to the Tottenham game that Whissa would be out for a period of months following a challenge by Kovacic in the City game, which looked nasty and unnecessary to me.
00:01:08
officialgspn
Obviously, you could see his ankle twist in the challenge. He came off straight away. He limped off. He didn't look too well. It was hoped that it would be a minor thing, but it seems that we will be out without him until at least probably November, December time, which is, I think, a big blow given his goal scoring start to the season, given his link up play in the middle of the park, which I think was growing and but really beginning to show.
00:01:37
officialgspn
And obviously that, you know, that very first positive half an hour we had at the start of the city game, I thought he played his part in that. and And it was all starting to come together, especially for him, especially for someone who had been second choice behind the likes of Ivan Tony over the years, who had maybe been put out on the left. But I've always kind of considered him as a central striker. And I really thought that this could be the season where he gets a good number of goals, which obviously can still happen, but it is a blow that we will be without him now until around October, November time. Obviously he was beginning to develop a relationship with Brian and Bermo and I'm sure that will continue to develop, but obviously now Bermo has to adapt and he has to work with other players that can come in um to replace Whistle.
00:02:30
officialgspn
On this occasion, he was replaced by Fabio Carvalho following his impressive showing in midweek against Leighton Orient with a goal and two assists. This may be where Thomas Frank sees him fitting into the side. I know I've spoken about on this podcast recently, I'm not completely sure where Carvalho sits into the side, I think.
00:02:54
officialgspn
He's a slightly maybe too lightweight for me to be as part of the midfield three. We don't play a natural number 10, which is probably where he'd best that slide in normally. And then again, I'm not sure he has necessarily the pace of the likes of Chardo and Brian and Boomer to play off the wing. So maybe we can see him now play a kind of force nine role.
00:03:18
officialgspn
and maybe that will get him in the areas of the pitch that we want him in where he can show his quality and maybe he he will be able to take a chance by playing this role without without having the strikers available to us at the moment. I thought in the game he did show some nice touches. I think there was some nice intricate play. I especially remember when him and King Lewis Potter were combining on the left.
00:03:44
officialgspn
um just to find that half space just to get round the defenders. I think a couple of times I saw some really promising bits of play for him, but I think to to knit it all together, i I think I still want to see more from him over the 90 minutes and more more from him in terms of threatening the opposition's goal. I think I was quite surprised not to see Kevin Schade playing this role, especially against Tottenham.
00:04:11
officialgspn
I know obviously Thomas Frank before the game anyway gave some quotes in the press conference which were quite suggestive that Shada would come in but even in the absence of that I think we all know that Spurs play a high line, we all know that Shada's strength is in his pace and his ability to run in behind the night.
00:04:30
officialgspn
was somewhat surprised that perhaps Schaller didn't start this one in particular to see if we can kind of expose that. Although, as the game went on, despite Spurs playing a high line, I think you can definitely see how quick the likes of van der Ven are and how they can therefore play a high line with with the likes of him at centre back.
00:04:52
officialgspn
Another blow before kickoff was that Christian Norgard missed out through a minor injury. This is despite him playing against Leighton Orient and playing most of the game against Leighton Orient before coming off as a late substitute in midweek. This is a blow. Obviously, he's our captain. He offers that leadership, but also we are starting to look Finn on the ground without him. I think if you look at the bench at the weekend,
00:05:21
officialgspn
Conak's an obvious one that was fit fit into central midfield Trevor you've got on the bench you can play there as well. Obviously, I'm only a candid up starting But I wouldn't necessarily say any of those as so ah senior players at this stage Obviously, Fran Konyak has gone out on loan Jensen's also injured and I think it is a bit of a concern that our bench already just five games into this season after the issues we had last season is very very thin.
00:05:55
officialgspn
Obviously on the for this game in particular we saw Yannelt step into the Norgar role and we saw Yarmuliek starting. I am however pleased that Yarmuliek did get an opportunity. I felt that whenever we seen him play he looks after the ball well and I think he needs these opportunities to continue developing. I think perhaps on the ball he is better than Yannelt although Yannelt has his own qualities in terms of defensively and in terms of work rate which he is able to show and obviously I've said many times in his postcards, I don't necessarily think that, you know, it should be starting week in week out, but I do think he is a good squabbler. So as as I've covered, I mean, the ah the only considered senior first team members that we can say that are on the bench at the weekend was probably Shada, Rossev and Ben Mee. Obviously Ben Mee's getting, coming to the end of his career as well. So, you know, maybe maybe approaching their prime, you've only got the likes of Shada and Rossev.
00:06:54
officialgspn
I think in this scenario, it is very difficult to impact the game from the bench. Obviously, Kevin Schade was the obvious one to come on. He did come on. He you know tried to get a bat with his pace, but in reality, we we could do very little else with what we had on the bench. Of course, we are still also relying on the likes of Keen Lewis Potter in a ringback role.
00:07:18
officialgspn
and Although I feel like we have decided the season generally well and we've had good spells in every single game so far, I do feel like maybe this lack of depth, maybe this slightly playing certain players out of position is perhaps holding us back from getting a statement result in one of these games as close as we may or may not have come in in the last couple of weeks. After the break, I'll be analyzing the game itself from beginning to end.
00:09:00
officialgspn
Hello and welcome to part two then. So turning our attention to the game itself, I thought it was a very good game. I thought there were plenty of chances at both ends. I thought it was a lively game. And for the neutral, I imagine it was very enjoyable. Of course, we saw another early Brentford goal. So I was there in the away end. I was there one time, but I wasn't quite ready for this. Although and perhaps I should have been following on from the week before, but we saw the usual kickoff routine, which we will go into more detail on in tomorrow's tactics Tuesday, given the unusual quirk of it happening twice in a week away at some of the most difficult places we can go to. But it ultimately resulted in a King-Lewis polygetton on the ball, finding a bit of space, just getting that crossover. And it's a brilliant finish from Brian and Bumo. Caught it brilliantly well, glancing off the bar on the way in. Great volley.
00:10:00
officialgspn
very pleased for him again he's continuing a run of goals this season that you know if if he keeps this up it will be his highest goal scoring season for Brentford it will be on par with the goal scoring season to be perhaps seen from the likes of Ivan Tony in the Premier League for Brentford so I do have a feeling with Brian and Boomer that he just keeps getting better and better and and he's comfortable being the main man now and The only concern is what will that mean at the end of the season for him? Obviously, it's too far too early to get into speculation at this stage, but it's been a great start for him in in terms of in front of goal. Although we had that great start, I thought we quickly became very, very sloppy just moments after scoring, in all honesty. Mainly start trying to play out from the back,
00:10:56
officialgspn
But ultimately, conceding possession far too close to our own goal, the first goal was a really sloppy pass on Pinnock. You can't lose it there, passing it inside as a centre back, passing it inside to the area on the edge of the area, looking for you now. It it wasn't aimed at you now, but he was looking for you now and it was a badly misplaced pass and he was under little pressure.
00:11:23
officialgspn
I would like to say that's almost out of character for him. I have to say, though, that perhaps in the last couple of weeks, he has fallen below his usual standards. By contrast, I think Nathan Conley's next to him has arguably been our best player this season alongside him. And I think Vandenberg as well, since he's come in, also looks very comfortable in the ball playing out. So whether it's the early signs of the changing of the guard and and the younger centre halves coming in and making an impact and you know Pinnock being more the leader maybe starting to approach the end of his career I don't know obviously I still have big faith in Ethan Pinnock I still think on his day he's one of the best centre backs in the Premier League I've always said that I think you know he's won us a lot more points and he's lost us before but obviously he will be very disappointed with that sloppy back pass
00:12:19
officialgspn
um Sorry, sloppy pass towards you now, sorry. I potentially think we may have missed Norguil in the middle as a calming presence amongst our style of trying to play out from the back. I don't think Pinnock was the only one to blame even after they scored their first goal with Solanke. Chances kept coming. Spurs could and should have scored more, particularly when Son came through charging um in on Flecken.
00:12:49
officialgspn
andle and Flecken closed him down. The second goal, it came from Janelle, conceding possession slightly higher up but still in her own half. Again, I'm a little bit worried that his ability on the ball is perhaps not the level of our other midfielders or perhaps where it needs to be if we are to develop into more of a ball-playing team which is what we seem to be trying to do this season. Obviously Brennan Johnson finished that off after missing one or two earlier chances but the warning signs were there and I feel like sometimes if you know he's not quite as composed as other players I feel like he may he may rush his passes he may not have the vision of other midfielders
00:13:30
officialgspn
I do think with him he kind of needs to keep it simple to be effective and unfortunately he he he got caught out there but but like I said he wasn't the only one. In the first half I think we are far too open and far too loose to the back and if you're going to play the way we were set up to play you've got to do it well otherwise youll get you will give away the chances we gave away.
00:13:57
officialgspn
Having said that, Tottenham did also look shaky at the back at times. Vicario, the keeper, was almost caught out in possession on stroke of half-time, with some good closing down work from Carvalho, and Mbumu failing to finish off a golden chance, hitting it too close to the keeper, whereas perhaps...
00:14:14
officialgspn
mor to that more towards the left, more towards the corner he perhaps would and should have done better here and these are the chances you need to take for a result away at a big six team these are the chances you have to take especially when you are almost and giving away easy goals given out defensive performance and mainly loose passes in the middle of the pitch Tottenham continued to be wasteful. Madison did put it on a plate at one point in the box, but they failed to scramble at home in a six-yard box. Solanke also had a point-blank effort saved in the second half, but then Brentford did have another spell in the game, which would argue to be triggered by the handball incidents with Vicario. Now, I've seen plenty of discourse on social media since the game. Clearly, first of all,
00:15:05
officialgspn
It was a handball. I'm not doubting for one second that it was a handball. The referee wasn't too far away. He should have noticed it. He should have blown for a foul. I think the difficulty and I do understand is when you see the trajectory of the ball as it comes in the box. Dam's guard is there. Asperger's defender is there. It's not really clear.
00:15:34
officialgspn
who the ball is falling to if anything it's probably likely going over Dam's guard and falling to the Tottenham player therefore can we really say it's a red card and it's denial of a clear goal scoring opportunity I don't really think so I think yellow card definitely free kick of course you never know what could have happened from the free kick you never know if it did. um If play did go on and Vicario didn't handball it, whether yeah the defender wouldn't get to it or whether the defender would get to it would make a bit of a mess. of The clearance in Dam's guard would then essentially have an open goal because the keepers away from his goal. I understand all that, but I don't think VAR can say that there was a clear goal scoring opportunity
00:16:29
officialgspn
based on where the ball looked like it was going, but obviously it was a yellow card, obviously it was outside the area. Obviously we should have had a free kick, but I don't think by the letter of the law, VAR can intervene, and I'm not too sure it would have changed the outcome of the result, unfortunately. Perhaps more of note wasn't Bumos missed one versus one after with you know running through with Vicario on goal, I think.
00:16:56
officialgspn
It was a decent effort. It was a decent save as well. I think along with the chance he had at the end of the first half, I thought those were easier chances and more presentable chances than the goal he scored in the first half. So I think, you know, even with him, sometimes a bit of consistency, sometimes in in these games, these really big games against these big teams, he sees less of the ball. He won't have so many chances. We've got to take them when they come, especially when we're giving away goals at the other end for our own errors.
00:17:26
officialgspn
I thought the Shada header as well. i I thought to be honest, he probably did all he could have with that chance. And it was a great say, probably the best of the game from Vicario. Obviously, eventually our pressure wore off and there was a feeling in the stadium that Our chance had been and gone. We hadn't taken our chance in that moment. And obviously Spurs got the other end and score goal through Madison to make it 3-1. I don't really think there's anything Flecken could have done about it. I thought it was a bit of a Harlem-esque finish from Madison. And not unfortunately, at the get the game was over at that point. And I think where it went wrong is we simply allowed them to run at us through on goal too many times. it it was
00:18:14
officialgspn
uncomfortable in a way. I thought we also did perhaps offer a bit more than we usually do going forwards against these big teams and I think that's a trade-off we're experiencing at the moment but I feel like with this style of playing we've got to be better on the ball otherwise we simply can't do it. I thought overall it wasn't a terrible performance it was far from a terrible performance but I think there's plenty to work on and it was a tad disappointing after our performance at Manchester City a week before I did go into the game with a feeling that if we performed to a similar level that we did at City then we'd win we'd be able to get something out of the game at the very least but obviously we didn't hit those heights those are the standards I know i know how difficult it would have been to hit those heights against City and we can't necessarily expect it every week but
00:19:10
officialgspn
We know it's in us. We've not had a game this season where we've been absolutely awful, but also it's a slight shame that we haven't been able to take any points out of these three difficult away games, all of which we've been in in points, all of which we've done well in points, but ultimately we've lost them through errors that perhaps on another day could be avoided. And if we want to get wins at these places need to be avoided. Also, perhaps you can expect the result with the ever-growing injury list that we were once again suffering with this season is very much hope the players are back and back soon, obviously the likes of Rico Henry. His delay seems to be, his return seems to be delayed and delayed. He's not yet played for the B team as first thought. He appeared to suffer a minor knockback in terms of his injury and
00:20:05
officialgspn
I think I saw a rumor that he's now due to come back into part-time training, but they haven't put a time scale on when he's to play um a friendly or or to regain match practice. But that that those are the issues we're faced with, I think, nor guard is likely to be back next week, but otherwise I would not expect anyone else really to come back from injury that soon. So we will, of course, see what we do, but the opportunities is there now in the next couple of weeks. I think if if we are to continue playing this way, we've got two games coming up which are more winnable in the sense that they're teams that we can be more expected to compete with and they're both at home in West Ham and Wolves. So then that was the Daily Brentford Podcast for today. We hope you enjoyed today's episode and once again, we would be extremely grateful for your support as this will enable us to get bigger and better moving forwards.
