Okay, as you may or may not know, we've I've changed the name of this thing to The Boiler Room, Trade Truth and Chaos. And it's still going to be my thoughts, not
Pressure in the Boiler Room

yours. um and Just a little bit more streamlined, a little bit more broad, where pressure makes everything happen.
00:00:19
Baker Plbg
So if you can't handle the pressure, then get out of the boiler room. um I did want to talk about quickly. i'm Sorry, it's going to be a bit more long form.

So the clips will still be on Instagram, ah but the videos on on YouTube will be between three and ten minutes type of thing. So little breakdowns of what I think is going on, so on and so forth, and the occasional brave soul that decides to They're willing to engage with me in real time, which, as I think of you've seen, is not such a bad thing.
00:00:54
Baker Plbg
I'm not as mean as I ah portray myself to be.
Federal Investment in Trades
00:00:57
Baker Plbg
Anyway, this Team Canada Strong, $6 billion dollars for the federal workforce. ah to train and hire up to 100,000 new Red Seal skilled employees by 2030, which frankly is an abysmal number.
00:01:11
Baker Plbg
Right now in Canada, we are converting about 20,000 employees um plumbers per year according to the statistics statistics statistics there's about 65 000 that enroll of that eventually 25 uh 20 to 25 000 become i get their ticket so there's like four parts to this thing the first part is the employer me gets ten thousand dollars if i hire somebody obviously the paperwork that goes into that and they're paying for that out of their 6 billion, uh, you get a $5,000 bonus. The actual,
00:01:52
Baker Plbg
Tradesmen or women gets $5,000 once they get their red seal, and they're going to give you an extra $400 per week while you're in school, which basically translates to $16,000, which basically translates to $32,000 the government's going invest into each individual tradesman.
00:02:11
Baker Plbg
the interesting thing about that is is that number if you have a hundred thousand of them is 32 billion or 3.2 billion dollars so i don't know where the other six billion dollars or the other 2.8 billion dollars goes to goes into the administration of the program they're no doubt giving something to these trade colleges whatever those things are the new things that have popped up they got to pay ah ah jsp George has got to get his money. Don't, don't leave George out of it.
Training & Certification Discrepancies
00:02:46
Baker Plbg
I did find an interesting stat. I talked about, it was a couple of months ago that there's like only 17 to 20,000 plumbers actually in in Canada, which is a crazy ass number. Um, and of those, hang on, i'm just going to pull this up again. so I get it right. Okay, don't forget this is simply plumbing. According to this, they've changed it since I did it a year ago. There are about 30 to 35,000 active certified Red Seal plumbers working in Canada.
00:03:18
Baker Plbg
um So that' that's through StatsCan. ah The total workforce, according to the national census, is about 50,000 employed plumbers. 66% of those um hold actual Red Seal endorsements. hang I'm going to some math here. Hang on a second. As usual, the numbers don't
Red Seal Program Exploration
00:03:39
Baker Plbg
really bear out. They say there's... ah 33 to 35,000 active certified plumbers. They say there are 50,000 that are employed, which includes the apprentices, and 66% of those have ah an official Red Seal endorsement, which turns out to about 29,000.
00:03:58
Baker Plbg
actual certified plumbers. They do say there's around 27,000 apprentices registered in the plumbing program across the country at any given time. And they, again, according to StatsCan, Canada issues roughly 1,700 to 1,850 new Red Seal plumbing certificates to graduating apprentices every single year. It is a fabulous trade to get involved with. um There's, in you know, the Red Seal program tracks the trade endorsements, um ah the skilled trades in Ontario and BC skilled trades, Alberta.
00:04:43
Baker Plbg
I run our provincial bodies as opposed to, i went to SAIT and NAIT, which are federal registries. So anyway, I don't know. I didn't go in Ontario and I didn't go in BC. So I can't speak to those, but I do think that's the one thing the government has done well because they haven't messed with it in 30 years is our apprenticeship program and our training program.
00:05:07
Baker Plbg
is top notch. If you're able to go through those, it takes anywhere from five to seven years to get your actual certificate and your red seal. And if you do that properly and take it seriously, you will be a well-trained individual when it comes to the plumbing field and get you ready to become what I like to dub the junior journeyman.
Misconceptions & Trade Proficiency
00:05:31
Baker Plbg
which means you'll have another decade of experience to get before you're ready to actually tackle the real world and the situations that you will come across. I do find it funny. There's that meme going around about that dumbass saying that it's not going to be AI that's going to take our jobs. It's going to be the millions of of ah of unemployed individuals looking to take our jobs that are coming.
00:05:56
Baker Plbg
That just tells you the degree to which these people disrespect what we do. They literally think that they can, you know, in a weekend become a certified trade or like the skills trade in Ontario or BC with ah George St. Pierre beacon off about you can start your career in three months. That is a load of hogwash. And I hope – I hope you pass that message on to everybody that you see. It's not a three-month journey.

It is like anything in this world. If you want to be really good at it, it's going to take 10 or 15 years. And you can disagree with me all you want, but once you get on that path, once you're in year 7, 8, 9, you're like, holy There is a lot that I still have to learn.
Lifelong Learning in Trades
00:06:45

There's a lot that I still need to sharpen my skills on, which is the beautiful thing about this trade is it. You'd never, if you want, you will never stop learning. And that's my, uh, encouragement to you all is to never stop learning.
