Storm Delays and Match Discussion: Fulham and Monaco

00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously we missed one yesterday that is because of a certain storm that we will talk about that in just a minute but today is Tuesday and seeing as we miss the review yesterday like I'm gonna have a little bit of talk about the Fulham game ah where it leaves us currently in the state of things. And then also looking forward to Monaco as well and the Champions League with a couple of fun little shout outs at the end. So make sure you stick around to the end because your hometown might just be shouted out. um Starting off the weekend, Sunday, it was a rough one for us. ah Apologies for the sirens, I live right next to a hospital. It was a rough one for us.

Is the Title Race Over for Arsenal?

00:01:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Won all against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yet again after last season Fulham come back to haunt us and this time it i mean it was get it was one of our boys you know one of our boys causing problems for us. Emile Smith wrote playing a key factor in the pool in the ball out to Tete who then fed Raul Jimenez to bring Fulham up against us. I mean the big question is won all score line dropping points away from home The big question on everybody's lips and everybody seems to be shouting it is, is this it? Is the title race over? Are we done and

Arsenal's Position and Player Returns

dusted with?
00:01:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
well The way that we can look at it currently, we're still third in the table with 29 points, which is a strong position to be in at this point in the season. We're two behind Chelsea after their insane game against Tottenham. It was a remarkable turnaround. I think was it they were 2-0 down and went on to win 4-3.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Spurs being Spurs yet again and Six points behind Liverpool who also have a game in hand on us after their Merseyside Derby clash was delayed by storm Dara at the weekend, which also squandered my well i also did it almost Squandered my plans of getting back to the UK. I was in Denmark ah Enjoying a little bit of culture with my girlfriend and we very nearly got caught up in a mix of it. So Annoyingly, it also gives Everton an extra bit of rest before we face them next week. But we'll get into that. First of all, we need to focus on the Fulham game. The first goal, obviously, from Jimenez being played in around the back. And the back line for Arsenal in this game, i I was in Denmark when the game was being played. And I like i look at the back line now, Parte Saliba Kivior Timba.
00:03:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Timber playing on the left instead of the right I mean he can do it but it's not where he's a all natural.

Defensive Struggles and Player Impact

00:03:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Parte at right back again and I really struggle with Thomas Parte I really really do. Saliba obviously you know he's he's fit he's probably our best and actually Gabriel probably has a shout to be our best centre back at the moment and then Kivior and I like Kivior he's not a bad player but my word was he cooked for this goal is just spun by Jimenez who managed to get through on goal one-on-one with David Wright and slotted it into the bottom left hand corner just out of his reach. ah It was a really well taken goal.
00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
from Jimenez, who seems to be on a sort of a little bit of a ah ah reminisce, no, what's the word, a renaissance in his career. you know we've We've had a few of them, the Chris Woods of the season so far. And you know he's he's in pretty decent form and it was a nice goal. It was a really nice goal down to the bottom left-hand side of Rice's goal. I mean, we did answer back with a lot of attacking momentum. I mean, Rice,
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Rice came kind of close, I suppose, with his left-footed shot after a great ball over the top in. Had him sort of one-on-one, but he drifted out quite wide, so decided to sort of hook at it with his left and it just sent it a little bit wide. i The Saliba goal was a good goal, of course, yet again.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
It came from the Corner Kings, they ah apparently the Stoke City of the Premier League at the moment. If it's not dark arts, it's Stoke City, so our Arsenal can't just be Arsenal anymore. We have to be related to a team from the past. We can't just have our own way of doing things.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I mean, the Sleeper goal was great. It was headed down by Havoc, a brilliant corner in from Dechner, right? The thing is, the corn the quality of the corner taking from Rice and Saka recently has just been phenomenal. You listen to any pundit, any commentator, anybody who knows their football, the precision with which they're playing these balls in time and time again perfectly is absurd.

Set-Piece Strengths vs. Finishing Weaknesses

00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
And quite frankly, a little bit unnatural. I mean, Alan Shearer's, I think he said it air possibly on his podcast, ah he was at the game,
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
commentating and he said he's never seen a better display of um set peace taking. even though it only resulted in one goal for us. This is the problem. I mean, we had another opportunity from a set place. It was Party from a corner. Party who was free, no one near him. Not a soul, not a foot, not a film player, not even an arsenal player, not even a gust near him. And what did he do? He sent it wide of the target. So much space and he somehow missed from a free header from yet again another perfect corner.
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm in a bit of a party rant mode at the moment. I'm not going to lie to you listeners. It's upset me slightly, but it's fine. It's fine. You know, we didn't lose the game. I mean, when we look at the statistics as well, we dominated them. 12 shots to two shots, four shots on target to two shots on target.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
the big problem is eight shots off target the quality of finishing was not there yesterday even though trussard the best finisher in the arsenal sorry i'm not gonna i'm not gonna have a go at the other guys for their opinions on trussard on this one but um he he had a really tame shot on goal uh our finishing was just poor in this game as udigar had a bit of a quiet one as well he wasn't really at the sticks but there was a there was a brief moment a brief moment what we thought We might have done it. We might have finished it exactly as we wanted to. But, of course, Martinelli, my boy, I love him, I love him. I'm i'm not ashamed of that, but I love that man, was needlessly offside when he put the ball into the far post. Usaka had tucked it away so well, so well. I think it was the 89th minute that goal was chalked off. And it just crushed me, seeing that result utterly, utterly crushed me.
00:07:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and meant that, yet again in the Premier League, we dropped points, which and this Premier League season is probably the most entertaining Premier League season that we've seen in a long time, in terms of the teams who are kind of coming out of nowhere and doing some real stuff. I mean, Forest is still fifth, which is madness, Villa sixth, Brighton seventh, Bournemouth eighth, and then the likes of Tottenham eleventh, Newcastle twelfth, Man United thirteenth. You look at those teams and the positions, it almost feels like it should have switched.
00:07:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
realistically from the pedigree of the clubs and the quality of the players that they have at these clubs. But alas, we've been undone again. by phil I mean, we weren't beaten. We can hold

League Competitiveness and Arsenal's Challenges

00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
on to that. We weren't beaten. They're 10th in the table now. But it just to lose, to drop points again. I mean, we've drawn five games. So that's 10 points and we've lost two. So we dropped 16 points in 15 games. That's not how you win a title. It's not.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Whereas Liverpool, in 14 games, have dropped 7 points. That's how you go on and win things. And if we can't get this consistency through at the moment, which we thought we'd turned a corner, honestly, with the last two results that we had, we really, really did, we could be in a real spot of bother at the moment. i mean The Premier League was fascinating this week anyway. Palace, Man City too all. You know, you're playing at Salhurst Park, not an easy place to play at all. Nottingham Forest beating Manchester United at Old Trafford for the first time I think in 50 years, which was incredible, incredible. Amarin really, I think is coming to terms with the quality of the squad that he has not being very good. Brentford beating Newcastle 4-2.
00:09:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
which was just amazing. Again, another incredible result for Brentford. Leicester coming from behind to draw with Brighton. Bournemouth coming late on to win against Ipswich and then Spurs, Chelsea. I mean, we're going to we're talking mainly about Arsenal, of course, but I would recommend if you've got five minutes, go and watch the highlights of that game because it was absolutely madness.
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Man this but the Premier League is madness this season. It's it's so hard to predict anything at all We're gonna take a quick break We kind of gone through the basics of what happened in the film game and the disappointment behind Kiviels just not good enough to be starting these games He's really not and I genuinely I'm not just saying this, you know to wind people up or you know have a laugh I don't think Trossard's good enough to be starting games either we need to be giving Martinelli another run inside because he was doing so well at not just well he wasn't scoring many goals but his job was closing down space getting him behind his speed was another tool that we had which Trossard simply doesn't I think we're gonna miss it
00:10:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Honestly, but obviously there's a lot of games coming and we're going to talk about the game coming on Wednesday as well. It's just a constant maelstrom of football at the moment.

Premier League Preview and Chance Creation Issues

00:10:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, you know, it's been, it was a frustrating weekend against them and well we're going to have a break and we're going to look forward to the next five games that Arsenal have to play and our problem with chance creation, which is something that we really need to talk about. So I'll be back just after this message from our partners at Zencaster.
00:11:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome back to part two of this Tuesday edition of the Daily Arsenal Podcast. You're here with me, Josh Vince. We've been talking about the Fulham result of the weekend, which was a disappointing result. I think we can all agree. um But we want to look forward, first of all, to the next five games that Arsenal have in the Premier League. There are obviously other games around it, but I just wanted to focus on the Premier League at the moment because I feel it's such an important competition for us to do well in. Well, obviously, it's the important competition, but the cups and things like that, the Champions League, I'd love to win. I don't think we're going to. It'd be amazing if we did. But the f FA Cup and, you know, I was in the Carlin Cup, I think it is. No, it was the Carlin Cup. The other League Cup. You know, I'm not hugely fussed about massively Champions League. I care about and Premier League. I really do. So our next five Premier League games next week, Everton at home.
00:11:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Everton need some results, and that they're not playing brilliantly, but they can be plucky. So again, not an easy game. Then we have Crystal Palace away. That's gonna be horrible. Salahas Park is, you talk to any footballer, they say it's one of the most oppressive places that they can go and visit, up there with sort of, not as terrifying as Anfield, but it's such a small ground, it's so close together.
00:12:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
that sell has part i it's a tough it's a horrible game for anybody and i mean sisy drew this weekend there and palette havenn't been playing brilliantly either and they're starting to find a bit of form so this is kind of bad time to play them Then at home I general ah don't like saying we should win this anymore because the Premier League is so competitive, but that's a game we should win. Brentford away. I can't call that one. Brentford away at the moment. We're going to have to see how the form unfolds before that. And if there's any big injuries, but Brentford just flying into my own whistle has been outstanding for them and then Brighton away.
00:13:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if you if you read this list of teams 10 years ago, Everton, Crystal Palace, Ipswich, Brentford, Brighton, you would say 15 points, easily 15 points. Now, like maybe a aware you'd hope, I'd probably hope for 12, 11, but I couldn't guarantee it by any means. It's gonna be a hard five games, especially with the problem that we have at the moment, which is chance creation.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Chance creation is a huge problem for our side. I mean, obviously having Martin Urdugard back a is huge

Chance Creation vs. Expected Goals

00:13:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
for us. It's a big bonus, really, really big bonus. But I'd very rarely talk about XG, but I'm going to because there was an outstanding um article on the athletic.
00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah talking about Arsenal wanting to be kings but having a big problem which is our chance of creation and they brought up a table which I'm just looking at in a moment which has the XG of Arsenal in terms of how it's broken down per open play against set pieces and apart from a couple of games the set piece well the the set piece xg is remarkable for Arsenal it's 0.5 per game now our title rivals Chelsea Liverpool Man City are nowhere near us City have a 0.4 but we're still well ahead of them Chelsea 0.24 and Liverpool 0.26 so in terms of the set piece goals we know we're scoring them everybody's well aware of Dan Ecrusiova is probably the most, apart from our tetta currently, the most important member of our staff because we cannot seem to find goals via open play which is highlighted again against these four. Manchester City aren't playing brilliantly at the moment and they aren't scoring huge amount of goals either but their expected goals are 1.49 from open play per game because they have such an expansive style of play.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Even without their key players, they're still dangerous in those rounds. Liverpool, who are flying 1.6, but defensively they've been sound as well. liverpool They've been really, really good. Chelsea, who are on an absolute flyer at the moment, which no one expected, I don't think. Even a lot of Chelsea fans at the start of this season, you told them this was how their season's gonna go. They would have bitten your hand off. 1.77. So they're all, Manchester City are like 0.1, 0.01 off of 1.5 goals expected from open,
00:15:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
play every game. Arsenal 1.06. It's a big drop. It's a really big drop. Considering that we by many are considered title rivals or title chances to only be expected to score one goal from open play per game with the creators that we have on the pitch as well. I mean think about it. Declan Rice isn't a number eight. We were talking about this on the group chat during the game. He is a number six. He's struggling to fill that gap. Why Marino wasn't playing, we weren't 100% sure.
00:16:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Giorgenio getting a start in again was kind of swamped out of this game. He's against Fulham. I like Giorgenio but he's not as good as every as he'd like to think and he's not as good as we would have hoped still but he is getting on as well so it's kind of a catch-22. Odegard!
00:16:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
one of the most beautiful creative players we've seen in years. Struggling to get a tune out of the forward players. Haverz is so good at holding the ball up and creating chances from there, but Kaiusaka on the right hand side can create from nothing. He can shoot from nothing and score, but can also create beautiful openings for players. The problem is we're not finishing anything.
00:16:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
and this wasn't a huge issue last year we were netting goals for fun last year and it was what i liked about arsenal last year and kind of what i like about them this year as well is that the goals have been spread out they've been really well spread out amongst players but this year it has been spread out but the quality of the finishing has drastically fallen off drastically i don't know why that is, whether it's exhaustion, whether it's focus, whether it's just natural ability at being able to finish. I didn't think we needed a number nine to win this league. Honestly, I thought we could do it with the collection of players that we had. But Martinelli is not quite on his game. Odegard is still coming back from fitness. Saka must be exhausted at this point in time.
00:17:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Havarts for a long part of this season was limited to just being an upfront presser because we were so, we were so scarce of any creativity behind him while Erdogan was out. Rice is venturing forward a bit too much for my liking. He should be, he really should be the anchor in front of that back four. Thomas Pate is just not performing as well. Gabrielle has been our most reliable goal scorer almost. You know, it's, there's something wrong.
00:17:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
at the moment with the amount of creative talent we have and the lack of ability to put it away is genuinely concerning. And I do worry about that going forward if we want to win this league. And in January, I did see a report earlier that Vlajevic may well be up for sale.

Potential January Signing: Striker Solutions

00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
In January, we might have to spend big and go in for a big striker because if we want to do something special, which this this group of players deserves,
00:18:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
because they've been together for a while now and they've been playing brilliantly together for a while they deserve a win they really do and i just hope that it comes comes as soon as possible anyway that's that's enough looking back i feel sad even doing it we're going to take a quick break when we come back we're going to have a little look at our uh champions league opponents that we're going to come up against on wednesday monaco monaco and um have a little look at how they're doing, they're they're real danger players, and also have a little shout out to some of you lovely listeners. So we'll be back just after this message from the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, all about the Global Sports Podcast Network. A brilliant, brilliant collective of podcasters working together to bring you up to date Premier League coverage every single day. We've talked about Fulham, talked about where it leads us. We talk about our problems in goal scoring, but now it's time to look forward to Wednesday. Let's be a bit more hopeful. Monaco on Wednesday. So Monaco, French team, for those who aren't necessarily aware, they're currently third in Ligue 1 with 29

Monaco Match Preview and Key Players

00:20:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
points. And their top goal scorer is a Moroccan lad. And I hope I get this pronunciation right. Elise Ben-Saguir.
00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
who is a very exciting ah winger, right footed left side, he likes to cut in kind of like the opposite of Saka on that side, who so far has scored five goals in 19 games, which is a good return for the start of the season, 19 games, five goals, that's like one every four, it's not bad return, especially when you consider that he is 19 years old.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
19 years old he's not even 20 and he is their top goal scorer and do you know what they're playing relatively well they've only conceded 19 goals in 19 games which is a really impressive defensive stat I mean we just have to look at um Arsenal realistically in terms of the Premier League we've conceded 15 So that's not including that's not including the cups, that's not including the Champions League and the Premier League we've conceded 15 and our defence is meant so meant to be the best in Europe. These guys have conceded 19 and 19 games. Defensively they are sound, they are very very sound and what makes this clash even more interesting
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
is that in the Champions League table, obviously it's the first year the Champions League has a table, so the top eight teams immediately progress to the last 16, and then it's ninth to 24th playoff to get to the last 16. Arsenal is seventh in that league with 10 points, which is great. That's automatically into the last 16. Monaco are eighth. They are eighth, and they're playing really well. They're doing really, really well.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, admittedly, we've only conceded two goals in the competition so far, but when we have a little look back at Monaco's results from the Champions League in particular,
00:21:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
The last game, yes, they lost to Benfica at home, not a great result for them by any stretch of the imagination, but then beat Bologna away. Now Bologna might not seem like a terrible, terrifying opponent, but last year they were fantastic in Serie A and, you know, no pushovers. So they did well to beat them there. They beat, um, I can't even pronounce this team's name, Krivena Zveda.
00:22:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
They beat them 5-1 in the Champions League as well, of course, which was you know great for them. 2-1 draw with Dinamo Zeigareb. They beat Barcelona at home. to one Barcelona have been theyve been pretty good this this season, you know so they've not played badly in the Champions League at all. We arguably have been a bit better than them. You definitely could say that.
00:22:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's they're not they're not pushovers in this competition by any means. One potentially good thing is that we can't get hurt from our old friend Florian Ballagam, the American player who we sold to them, I think it was this summer, the summer before. um He's got a shoulder injury, so he won't be playing against us. But the big fear is this Alicia Ben-Saguir, who is likely to play on the left-hand side.
00:23:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
so hopefully he's going to be coming up against timber on the right but with the injury problems that we have at the moment he's up against party well let's put it this way we won't be having a party there will be problems there so my prediction for that game realistically they're a good side they're a good side in league game which is not the most competitive league in europe by any stretch of the imagination i'd probably argue premier league at the moment syria La Liga Bundesliga, La Liga Bundesliga are similar and then Ligue 1, the French league underneath there. But yeah, I'm gonna go. I think we can win it. I think we can win it. I don't think it's going to be a rout though. And hopefully, I don't know, with the defence, so many injuries at the moment. I mean, Califiori still out, Gabrielle still a doubt.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
going to go 2-1. I think 2-1 is a safe bet for that game. ah Hopefully I'm wrong and hopefully we do considerably better than that but you can never be too sure. um That's kind of it in terms of looking forward. The last thing I want to do though, we've talked about this a little bit on the podcast a couple of times, I keep meaning to do it and while I was away

Listener Acknowledgment and Global Support

00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
in Denmark. My girlfriend told me absolutely had to do it, and she's right, we absolutely have to do it. So I'd like to shout out some of the listeners, because we get analytics on Zencast, so we can ah see where people are listening from, ah in particular the cities where we get the most repeat listens. So obviously we've got some great listeners in the UK, Bedford, Hackney, Manchester, Birmingham as well, which is great to hear. Thank you for listening to us in Birmingham. But also we have listeners all around the world,
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have repeat listeners in Madrid, in Spain, Stockholm, in Sweden, and a lot of you in America as well. I mean, in Ashburn, Virginia, North Charleston, in South Carolina, Boardman in Oregon, Council Bluffs in Iowa, which is a fascinating town name, I'd love to hear more about that. And we think, because Sendcast hasn't got an exact location on this, we think we have a repeat listener in Tura, in Russia,
00:25:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if that's the case, I mean, to all of you who listen to us on repeat and keep coming back for more ramblings from bald idiots like myself or angry Joshua Duncan rants or hopeful Jamie Patterson lines. Thank you. Thank you. We really, really appreciate it. Every single one of you. And if you want to get in touch, we would love to hear from you. So you can message us direct via Instagram.

00:26:17

um That is it from today, from myself, Josh Vince. Tomorrow on the Wednesday episode, we are doing a special on the what could have beens, the hopefuls, the ones who didn't quite make it in the Arsenal ranks.

Future Episodes Tease and Well Wishes

00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then next Tuesday, well, obviously on Thursday, we'll be doing the crossover, hopefully with Everton, and then we'll do a preview of that game. Monday, we'll do a review. And next Tuesday, we're gonna look at the, we're gonna compare two teams seeing as a team has been linked so much with Arsenal we're going to compare us and Stoke City so that should be an interesting one see just how much like the old school stylings of Stoke Arsenal really are or if we are you know Arsenal um
00:27:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just before I sign off, actually, um everybody at the Daily Arsenal podcast as well um would like to send their best wishes to Michael Antonio, who was unfortunately in a very, very bad car accident earlier in the weekend. I think it was a really horrific accident for him. ah Obviously, his family must be going through an awful lot and reports are he's not going to be able to play football for a year, but Quite frankly, I think a lot of people were just glad that he survived it because it was a horrible crash. So everybody from here from I'm sure Global Sports Podcast Network but from Daily Arsenal as well. ah We wish Antonio all the best and a speedy recovery. But for today, that has been the Daily Arsenal Podcast. I've been your hope your your host, Josh Vince. And until tomorrow, thank you for listening and goodbye.
