Recap of Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace League Cup Match

00:00:01
Speaker
every club every day the global sports podcast network hello hello hello welcome to the daily arsenal podcast brought to you as part of the global sports podcast network it may be six days till christmas but jesus has certainly arrived early league cup league cup doesn't always throw out bangers but this was a rather entertaining game. On today's episode of the podcast, we'll be giving an immediate reaction to Arsenal's 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in the League Cup quarterfinal. And joining me to discuss this game and the game on Saturday is Joshua Duncan. Josh, good to see you. Weird game, wasn't it?

Game Analysis: Chaotic First Half vs. Impressive Second Half

00:00:43
Speaker
Yeah, I think it was a half, of but both different halves really. First half was a bit, you know, calamities, and then second half was brilliant. So yeah, weird game, definitely weird game. Yeah, absolutely. Definitely, like you say, game with two halves. And we're going to spend the first two sections looking at the game. Before in the final one, we look ahead to our Saturday fixture, which is actually against Crystal Palace again. But Josh, to start things off, you said calamity. Bloody hell. That was calamity at the back from give you, wasn't it? My word.
00:01:12
Speaker
I don't know if he was ball watching or I don't know. I think he was ball watching and he just misjumped, he missed having the ball and the jump. And then when Mateta was in, that was it. You know, as soon as you got that yard and head over, it would give you all, you know, just playing back and there. It was a good goal for me.
00:01:28
Speaker
hey It was a really tidy finish and he did well to hold Kivi or off I was slightly amazed that he just you saw it on the replay Mateta was running towards the Arsenal goal never once looked at the flight of the ball and then just seemed Surprised as it came over the shoulder. It's like Oh Kivi or miss this up. All right, cool. I Just went on to score. So it was a pretty terrible start to the game let's be honest like yeah and the way we were playing the first half was not good the starting lineup that we had was quite Interesting.

Lineup Choices and Tactical Decisions

00:01:59
Speaker
Yeah, it was. Yeah. So Partay at right back, Timba Kivior in the centre back, Tierney getting a start for Arsenal. I think it's like the first time he's played for us in a year and a half. Yeah. Or something like that. To be fair, he did it right. Yeah, he did it right. I was quite impressed with him. I thought considering it's been a year and a half since he's played professionally, like he did well. Then we had Wanyeri, Jorginho, Mourinho in the middle of the park.
00:02:28
Speaker
wasn't the best midfield but we'll go on to that in a bit. And up front, I'm not gonna lie Josh, I started sweating when I saw this front three, Sterling, Jay-Zoot and Trossard. It did not fill me with huge amounts of hope. How did you feel when the starting lineup was announced?
00:02:47
Speaker
Well, I saw it and I was just like, oh, Sterling. For me, it's like, really? And Jesus, for me, I don't mind Jesus. He's all right. He's like, he just can't finish. That's the only thing today. He did a little bit of everything. He did a little bit, yeah. I mean, Trossard is just Trossard. Trossard, you're right. I know you're hating him. I know you're hating him.
00:03:13
Speaker
You're right. He's just Trossard. He's just useless. fine But um Sterling did not cover himself in any glory in this game, but he had a decent effort with a deadball free kick sort of about midway through the first half. He falls to save at Hendo, but I think Hendo was getting to that every day. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I agree. It didn't fill me with hope. I mean, he cut back for Trossard at one point as well, who then Trossard with his you know best finisher in the club sent it sky high.
00:03:42
Speaker
um place It was a terrible effort to go.

Halftime Adjustments and Improved Performance

00:03:47
Speaker
And I'll be honest, the creativity was so lacking in midfield in that first half, wasn't it? It was, I think we had three shots in the first half over 45 minutes, which was just, I was getting frustrated with it at that point. How, how are you finding the first half in terms of us trying to attack?
00:04:05
Speaker
I think what we could see all season, you know, just not creating anything. It was just, it was really frustrating to watch. It was just like, you could see the change of the interview made. I was surprised he took off my nairies so early. I was surprised with that one. Yes. I thought they would have played him and the older guy together. Just like the experiment too.
00:04:22
Speaker
Well, it's interesting you say that, because as you as you say, like, Saliba and Martin Odegard came on for Ethan Wernieri and Thomas Partey at half-time, and Artetto never makes half-time changes, so clearly he saw changes need to be made. Alan Smith, I think it was, doing the co-com, said it's a shame to see Wernieri come off. He could have accommodated him and Odegard in the side. yeah And that's exactly what we were talking about on Monday. Why doesn't he just take that risk?
00:04:49
Speaker
I probably think it's probably because I'm guessing dont he doesn't really trust my area on the left hand side. I think that's probably the only reason why that's the only thing I can think of. Maybe he's probably scared on the counter. You know, Marino grew up to get back. to have I don't know. I think even though he played Marino the further up anyway. So for me, that's making sense, you know. Yeah, it was a really weird. it Well, at first I thought that's a really weird change and a bit of a desperate change.
00:05:16
Speaker
I'll be honest, to to bring on your two best players in. Don't even get me wrong, it's a quarterfinal, but it's also the League Cup quarterfinal. Like, if we but if if we don't go through, it's not the end of the world. I think it is what I kept up, because today you're talking about community should be in trophies, right? We all know that's not a trophy.
00:05:36
Speaker
ah oh but no Oh, Mikkel's having a little crisis of his own, bless him. And then Sterling had another chance to redeem himself, probably his last chance in an Arsenal shirt. It was, I'll be honest, a good ball across from t Trossard with his left foot, a really good ball, pinged across the front of goal. Sterling comes onto him. No, it was Trossard. It was Trossard with the ball across. And Sterling shoots twice and misses twice.
00:06:08
Speaker
thats Well, admittedly, Henderson saves the first one, but really Josh, you should be burying that as an international footballer. first I think the the first one, I've given a bit, but it it does come at pace and some people, yeah yeah if you miss it, I've seen people miss it. But the second one, that should be back in the neck. That's not a sterling finish. yes Close but no no cigar, you know what I mean? It just hits the post and the bar. Hits post bars.
00:06:41
Speaker
ah hits everywhere but the back of the net almost impressive quite frankly yeah at this point i was I was losing patience a bit and we had more attempts we had more attempts in the first eight minutes of the second half than the whole of the first half so Urdigard made a massive difference and then Finally, Jay-Zoo scores. He's finally scores. A lovely little chip over the keeper and it was Erdogan who fed him in.

Impactful Player Performances and Key Moments

00:07:10
Speaker
Really, really tiny finish, wasn't it? Oh yeah, you know that's why I loved about you. You know where Jay-Zoo, when he was just like that, he was kind of amazed to see that kind of go in a bit. Oh, I've scored at the Emirates. It's actually happened today.
00:07:25
Speaker
yeah I think that's though, that was an interesting stat as his first Emirates goal since the 17th of December last year. You know it is with him.
00:07:37
Speaker
I always think if if he gets a bit run of games, he probably will score. For some reason, we keep the system of habits. And with Hayes, to be fair on him, he has had a lot of injuries. And lastly, he was saying everybody was paying. He was paying in pain with his knee. So I do, but I've got to consider that.
00:07:55
Speaker
no however god For me, Bethany, I just i just think i think we should be starting him. I don't think he's the best number nine in the world. He's not. no We definitely need to get somebody. But at least he gets in positions where he gets a chance and I can take that.
00:08:12
Speaker
And he's got the technical ability, hasn't he, as well? Yeah, Havis doesn't do that. um He doesn't do it. you're You're convincing me more and more every day. I mean, this this performance helped as well. um I also made a note that Odegard and Timber look fantastic together. They look so good as a pairing. like yeah Them on the right there, it just changed the game, yeah honestly. Because he started inverting, didn't he, in the second half, I think, Timber and coming into midfield.
00:08:38
Speaker
I don't want to see Pater right back anymore. I don't know. It's not working. The experiment has failed. that Just play play him at right back, have play Timbret right back, have the two in the centre who would always have, and then either play Skelly or Tieni or Zinchenk, whoever you want, until Califiori's fit again. yeah like I'm fine with that. um And then they did some, I thought Glaznord did something incredibly disrespectful.
00:09:08
Speaker
brought on Eddie and Kettier against us and we'll come onto it in a minute but it was just written in the stars. Then T and E was replaced by MLS which was great to see. Saka comes on for so Sterling and Saka immediately feeds in Gabrielle Jesus for a second goal. Immediately. A good finish as well. You know, you smash it back in the there. yeah You know, them that that that first goal, you can see it boosts his confidence a bit. Usually you have a hits it wide or takes it edge to touch. It does something he doesn't need to do, but that one actually, so he wasn't all messing about with that one. It was a brilliant drill finish, wasn't it? Really good. I know that Adam Smith said it and ah the other comment the lead commentator said it, but I really agreed. Not having VAR,
00:09:52
Speaker
Obviously, it favoured us as Arsenal, but it made the game so much quicker. Just like goal, wicket, move on. Yeah, yeah. ah you I mean, it's two things. because You know, who far it's there for accuracy. It's just not being used properly. That's that's what it is. That's it. Yeah. clearly If it was used efficiently and well, I think people yeah have a problem with it. It's just been so crap in England. Yeah. It's just so rubbish. um And then hat trick hero. I don't think anybody and this on their bet. But, I mean, Gary OJ Zeus, another amazing pass on Murder Guard. J Zeus, in our half, dashes on past a little bit more centrally, but exactly the same finish, driven low into the bottom left corner. Great stuff from him. um And then the party was ruined slightly. I don't know about you, Josh. I've never seen Eddie and Kessie ahead of ball that well before.
00:10:48
Speaker
He was with us for seven years. I don't remember him scoring anything like that for us. Not not not like that, no. no not tap so You didn't get much gain to or start anyway. That is true. But yeah, it was was was a fantastic header. I mean, the leap and everything and how he got through. He was so far out as well. He was on the penalty spot. Yeah. And he got it and yeah, the jump, the jump for me was, yeah, it was a good finish. He got it past Raya, like from that distance like and beat Saliba in the air as well. like It was a very impressive goal, but eventually we hung on and we got through to the next stage. We're in a semi-final of a cup. Our test will be absolutely buzzing. It's made his, it's made his year that. It fully has. Genuinely. It's been a rough year, isn't it, for him? Right. We're going to take a little break. And when we come back, we're going to talk a little bit more about the specifics, a couple of little details of that game. And then in the third section, we're going to look forward to Saturday. So we'll be back just after this message.

00:12:26
Speaker
I think there was a big difference personally between what Palace were doing and then what we faced off against Everton on Saturday. Palace were really open and they were actually going for the game as well. That sort of team really suits

Challenges and Concerns for Arsenal

00:12:37
Speaker
us, doesn't it? Not one that's sitting back and sort of protecting that line.
00:12:41
Speaker
Yeah, yeah i mean you can see they you know they gave us openings in the game and we kind of exploited them a little bit. I think any team who sits back is going to be difficult anyway, because everyone's got their defensive duties, everyone knows what they're going to be doing. And it's literally you it's literally trying to unlock the door without a key. you know Literally, that's how you've got to look at it. And then you've got to find which key. You can imagine that when you're an old general, you've got loads of keys. Oh, I'm going to find it. I'm going to find it eventually.
00:13:06
Speaker
it that it really is to get um like you don i I have to admit I found recently as well that Erdogan, I love him and he is considerably better when we're playing on the break because it's those yeah long like cutting passes that he really excels at as opposed to the yeah when a team's camped in and like you say you're trying to find that one key in a million. like So I think this game suited him down to the ground. But on the note of Urdugard, this concerned me slightly, apologies. Palace brought off their three most important players.
00:13:45
Speaker
They brought off Eze, they brought off Mateta, and they brought off Sa. We had to bring our best players on to win this game. That starting lineup, basically, Josh, wasn't good enough, was it? Like, our depth didn't seem to be playing well together. I wouldn't say it wasn't good enough. I just think I think certain players shouldn't. I don't think partying right back, I think that killed us in the game. yeah you know I mean, him playing there, if you're desperate, then yeah you can do a law shifting
00:14:18
Speaker
He didn't really need to play in there. We've got Tim there. I didn't understand that. For any area, I felt a bit unlucky for him. you know I think he could have... He played all right. He didn't do the football. But he's still young. yeah i wouldn't say I would say probably the format of how we play today just didn't really suit the game. the first time i know i think I think that's ah as' a fair point. I mean, Sterling has just not done it for us. I don't know.
00:14:44
Speaker
Yeah, it wasn't me. I mean, I don't know what the problem with Raheem Sterling is because he wasn't complete crap at Chelsea when he first went there. He was, he was okay. And he was coming from being pretty decent at City as well. It just seems as though I don't know if the Pochettino era is just completely screwed with his head. Something's gone wrong there, clearly. I think he didn't pay that bad today. I think he paid all right. You know, i'm gonna you can see he really wanted to have a good time.
00:15:14
Speaker
He tried. He didn't work out. He tried. yeah it's It didn't work out. I've never really read him the before. He's always been that guy that's been really lucky. He's never been a real clinical finisher. He's never really been good at free kick. He's never really been able to cross a ball in. He's just been a guy that's been a very... you know He works hard and he works tremendously hard and he keeps himself fit. I give him that. And he always has the right attitude.
00:15:37
Speaker
But that's by 10, I don't know if he's good like that. Yeah, you definitely can't take his work ethic away from him by any means. But I guess when he was at his his most powerful, it's sort of coming in as that last minute poacher. And I swear the majority of his goals must have been scored from about four yards because it is that rebound tucking or the cutback from City and tucking. Like that seemed to be his is best way to score.
00:16:06
Speaker
so yeah maybe we're just six but maybe we were expecting too much of him coming to an open expansive play again you know i didn't i didn't you knew what we were getting you knew full well so i was kind of thinking about this especially in the first half and i wanted to ask you a question which of our arsenal players are actually in form at the moment would you say Ooh, yeah. That's a very hard question.

League Cup Results and Personal Stories

00:16:34
Speaker
I'd probably have to say. There's only a couple of things. I'd probably have to say Sapphire. Definitely Sapphire. Probably Timbo when he's on the right. Timbo was the one I was thinking as well, yeah.
00:16:47
Speaker
ah think I think that's it, you know, i I'm from the shores there, I think that's it. I mean, you could possibly ask Gabrielle, you know, mention possibly that again. Yeah, I think with the back four, I think you, I wouldn't say that on form, I think it was more solid. Yeah, but Timba has been on. Yeah, fu mono is on form, yeah yeah. Other than that, like, when you when you think about ah attacking players, and i I mean, all of them as well, like,
00:17:15
Speaker
that's the that's the best single performance from an attacking player for Arsenal that I've seen in a long time from Jason. Apart from Saka and it does worry me a little bit that out of the sort of six or seven attacking forwards we have only one of them is consistently playing brilliantly and then the others uh you know just sort of hit a miss Yeah, it's worrying when you're apparently in the title race. you know is is You kind of need to get the ground running. I don't think we're in it, but you know some Arsenal fans will say we're still winning. And the season's not over, so you never know.
00:17:56
Speaker
but And it it does it doesn't look positive, not at all. No, it doesn't. And that's why title talk is banned on the Daily Arsenal podcast until we get a run of seven wins. I think that's what we agreed on the other one. And the only other thing to mention really from tonight in particular is the scores from the other games. So obviously quarterfinals, there are four. Well, there are three games played today. The other ones being played tomorrow for some bizarre reason. So also going through Newcastle beat Brentford 3-1.
00:18:22
Speaker
ah It looks as though I was an absolute demolition. Sandro Tenali getting two goals. seat Me and Jamie told you, dude, he's he's the one to bring in. And he's not just a betting partner, he's the one to bring in. And um Liverpool kind of had to cling on a little bit against Southampton at the end, but ended up beating him 2-1. So Arsenal, Newcastle, Liverpool are through, and tomorrow is Spurs United.
00:18:46
Speaker
That's a really good game. I think that will be quite an entertaining match actually. Who would you rather go through? united yeah yeah my my old man my old man's a Liverpool fan and he said he messaged me just after the Liverpool one he said right we'll see you in the semis and then reply with actually no you're definitely getting spurs you're definitely getting spurs and i had to give a bit of a virtual hiding for that it's just like how dare you speak that into reality it it will not happen wait wait you can't just drop that you're that support Liverpool yeah discuss it
00:19:19
Speaker
but ladies awesome but So basically, Josh, he was he was born in you know he's born in the late 60s. He grew up in a very dark time. The 80s were particularly tough for people. There was you know those strikes, there was power outages, things like that. and he And people made mistakes back then. And this and he did. Whereas I was born in the mid 90s, things were sort of coming through. And and i I just came along at the perfect time and I saw the light.
00:19:48
Speaker
So um he nearly banned me from the house. I can imagine it having grown up now, totally understand. In fact, I think he was he was far too nice to me, realistically, growing up about it. But yes, um it's been it makes I say what it makes Arsenal Liverpool days really interesting. Yeah, we have to sit on different chairs.
00:20:10
Speaker
but But we can't sit on the sofa together. It's different chairs and left beside the room. But we've managed to just about make it work. um That's enough on the game tonight. When we come back in part three, we're going to talk about our upcoming fixture against Crystal Palace. We'll be back just after this message from the Global Sports Podcast Network.

Global Sports Podcast Network, every club, every day. And welcome back to the third and final part of today's podcast. We've already reviewed our victory in the quarterfinal of the EFL Cup. It's now talk time to talk about the Premier League fixture on Saturday, 5.30.

Looking Ahead: Arsenal's Upcoming Rematch

00:21:21
Speaker
This time though, Josh, away from home. So we've seen Palace, they put up a fight tonight.
00:21:28
Speaker
they really did and they didn't in the second half they were just pushed back they didn't have any real outward momentum until a couple of little breaks. Do you think they'll be even more up for it at Sellers Park because it's not a nice place to go is it?
00:21:42
Speaker
um I think they're probably going to sit back, you know. I don't think they're going to be so attacked. Yeah, I think today was more discard than see what happens. You know, they've got more important things to worry about. They stay in the league and they definitely don't want to get relegated. So I think they're going to be pinned back and they're going to make it very difficult for Arsenal. I think that's a really fair point. I mean, at the moment, they're 15th. They're only actually four points above the drop zone, which is good When you consider how they finished the season, like with Glazna coming in and I think they went on a run of like five or six wins straight, they were outstanding. Now this is a considering who you are, this is a bit of a silly question to ask really, but who would you start in the number nine role after this game? Would you start Havoc and Jesus or Jesus even?
00:22:36
Speaker
And I think I'm going to agree with you this time. I think I'm bad for even asking, because I think everyone knows who I'm going to get. Yeah, it's kind of like, it's one of those questions that after the game today, you have to ask it because he scored a hat trick, but it's almost pointless asking it. The big question is, can he carry it through?
00:22:55
Speaker
No, he didn't look like he was holding any injury. He looks like he's pretty fit at the moment, Jesus, which we really need at the moment. yeah all All things considered because, you know, it's we've we've not had too many problems with injuries upfront, but we need as many fit players as we can to give us that versatility. So would you like to see him get more of a run now that he's back and he's just got this hat trick, his first hat trick for Arsenal?
00:23:21
Speaker
um Well, you know, Haber's not doing the business, is he? Nah, he's not. But then again, primarily, it's a different ballgame. It's an internist game, it's a different atmosphere, you're going to be at Selhurst Park, as you mentioned, it's a tough place. It's a tough one, it's a tough one. The crowd at Selhurst Park are awful, aren't they? They're just like, it's so close and compact.
00:23:47
Speaker
Because I can literally see, let's just say he does start. I can literally see him going to South Park and he doesn't do anything. I can see that happening. And then you know, you and Evan will be like, oh yeah, he's stressed about what pain happens. He passes the Look, look, as I said, I am warming to your way of thinking. I'm getting tired of the German myself, okay?
00:24:07
Speaker
And I can I think you might be right because like you said just a second ago because this was the cup game They were just told to go out and play Yeah, you know go out and express themselves and have a good time. They will be more defensively structured tomorrow without a shadow on Saturday without a shadow without they will be and Jay Zeus definitely operates better in an open game Like he did today where he has the ability to make those little turns to get those runs in behind so I can see him probably starting it. um It'll be hard for him not to start him after a performance like that, won't it? I think Martin's going to play haberts because for some reason he loves this guy. This guy does not get dropped. If, and if, if, if he does play them, haberts are dead playing. I reckon.
00:24:57
Speaker
i'm pretty I think he will. I think haberts will be starting. Now we've got Marino. I think that sort of experiment is over. He doesn't seem to be letting him drop deep anymore. I don't think Marino's number eight, do I? I don't think he plays ball there. I don't either. I don't, I'm not a fan of it. I'm not a fan of it. I don't think, don't get me wrong. He's okay. He's not, but I think he's more better defensively. Even in case of Spain, he's more defensive and he's solid there.
00:25:23
Speaker
So I don't really, I'm not really, some of the decisions our test is doing, I'm not really, I'm kind of questioning a little bit, you know? ah January is going to be very interesting. Let's put it that way, isn't it? Because when when the window comes through, I can see us making some moves in there. and dominion I think we have to.

Speculation and Predictions for Future Matches

00:25:41
Speaker
I don't see it. Really? I don't see it. If it is, it'd probably be a loan move. It may even be a loan move. Nah, I think the summer, that's when they'll probably get some business done. You clearly need to get them at nine o'clock. I don't see them, I don't see them buying anybody. I really don't. Unless we have an injury crisis, we definitely need to get some. Yeah. I think our sport, how it is now, I think we're stuck with it till the end of the season.
00:26:05
Speaker
What's a bit of a sad thought, isn't it? Don't know what I'm saying, guys. That's really depressing, that thought. I think it's just because it's been so flat for the last couple of weeks. yeah And at points throughout the season as well, we definitely need something else, don't we? Like, yeah, yeah we need just someone to focus around, someone to push through.

yeah laugh Yeah. I guess ah guess we'll have to wait and see what happens there. So obviously 3-2 tonight. What's your prediction for Saturday? Because like we say, we think it's going to be a very different game. um I think, well, um this is what I hope. I hope, believe it or not, 2-1. That's more of a hope. It'll be a tight game. But you know what, judging from our last Premier League game of Cleveland, no, and no, boring.

I'm probably not allowed to say this because we're on an Arsenal podcast, but I have a really horrible feeling, really horrible feeling. They might do us one nil. Really? I just, I don't know. It's obviously actually, I think one thing that was clear tonight, the centre back pairing,

is so much better when it's Saliba and Gabrielle. And actually, if you're thinking about it, Saliba and Gabrielle will be starting. 100% they'll be starting together. All right. 1-0 Arsenal. It's going to be tight, man. It's going to be a real good score. Goal scorer for me. Rice. Dectin Rice. Dectin Rice, yeah. If he's fit, he might not even be fit for the game.

Speaker
No. I think everything will be. I'll stick with rice. I'll put my head out and stick ah stick with rice. Yeah, I think it's the sort of game where he might just pop up with ah a deep strike or a header or make a run in behind from deep. What about you? Gabriel.

Yeah. and the palace it's gonna be kesier isn't it it's gonna be him i don't think we'll start no no definitely not i don't know it's been pretty an old though from us if kivio somehow gets on the pitch then yes i'm going from kivio god we're really bashing him that poor lad but he's just love it he's not a bit very good is he a poor now Yeah, yeah, it was a rough one for him, but hopefully it will. Ma, I mean, we still won and hopefully that's the way it will continue. And that is it for today. As always, a huge thanks to thanks to Joshua Duncan for joining me. I've been your host, Josh Vince. We're through to a Cup semi-final. Jay Zeus is among the goals. Is there a Christmas miracle on the horizon? We'll have to wait and see. But until tomorrow, have a wonderful day and goodbye.
