Introduction and Crossover Update

00:00:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, hello, hello, and welcome to the Daily Arsenal Podcast, brought to you as part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. It's Friday, which means we're gonna have a little forecast. Look forward to our fixture against Everton. Now, we were going to do a crossover today. and We were gonna have Gus on from the Daily Everton Podcast, but unfortunately, he's come down quite ill. So we're not gonna be able to do a crossover today, which means, I'm afraid for you listeners, it's just

Arsenal vs Everton: Current Standings and Rivalry

00:00:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
me. It's just Josh Vince talking to you about Arsenal vs Everton which of course will come at three o'clock this Saturday at the Emirates Arsenal currently in third place with 29 points against Everton who sit in 15th place with 14 points. Now
00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
something that I was going to talk to Gus about in quite a lot of detail but instead we'll discuss here is the manner of the historic nature of these two clubs who are coming up against each other because it is impossible to deny ultimately. So Everton were last promoted in 1954-55 season and have now spent 69 consecutive seasons in the top flight Okay, now that is the second longest that any club has survived in the top flight of English football.

Historic Presence in English Football

00:01:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Who has survived the longest in the top flight of English football? That would be Arsenal, who have lasted 106 years. 106 years from the 1919-1920 season.
00:01:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's also fair to say that Everton have spent the longest, not consecutively, but in the top flight, if that makes any sense. So in terms of the total amount of time spent in the Premier League, Everton are the longest and most stable club. They've been in the top flight for 120 years in their history. Liverpool are second with 108 and Arsenal 106. When we came up, we never went back down. So the history of these two clubs is deep. It goes back all the way to the start of the 20th century just after really the sort of the finalization of World War I when things started getting back to normal a little bit in the United Kingdom.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of like the amount of games that we played, normally what I'll do for these crossovers is I'll tell them the Premier League stats, but considering the history of it, we have played since I think it was the 1800s, I think we played like a cup game or something like that against someone we were Woolwich Arsenal.

Arsenal's Consistent Success Against Everton

00:02:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
We have played 223 games against Everton in our history, of which we have won 112, drawn 46, and we have lost to Everton 65, which, with a little bit of cheeky maths, gets us to a 50% win rate over 100 years.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
which is bonkers when you think about it absolutely mad the fact that we have achieved that level of consistency over a team who have also consistently been in the top flight and not had you know the difficulties of relegation or anything like that to have a 50% win rate over a team with that sort of staying power and also who let's be honest in the 80s were were a powerhouse of a club they were for not I think I can't remember when they last won the Premier League but I'm pretty sure it was either late 70s or the 80s and you know a remarkable remarkable club in Everton Football Club. When it comes to the Premier League era
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
It doesn't actually change much in terms of sort of the spread of the statistics. So we played 64 times in the Premier League era, in the Premier League itself, not including the cups and everything around it. ah We've won 38 to drawn 14 and lost 12.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
So effectively what happens here is and when you look at the 223 games that we played in history, 50% Arsenal, 29% Everton, that becomes 59% Arsenal, 19% Everton within the Premier League era. So that dominance, especially coming through the Wenger years and sort of the success that Arsenal had when Everton started really struggling, to be honest, in the 21st century, that comes across really well in that

Match Records and Notable Stats

00:04:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
statistic. and it It does make you sort of worry about evidence sometimes, which we're going to get onto a little bit later. um In terms of goals that have been scored, in in those 64 fixtures, Arsenal have scored 124 goals.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
124 goals in 64 games. That is just under, while I'm talking 0.0 something percent, just under two a game.
00:05:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
whereas Everton have scored 57 in 64 games. Now, this is, again, something I'm going to come back on to when I have a little look at more of a deep dive into the Everton focus on things. But that's a considerable difference. 57 to 124, like we outgun them. The gunners outgun them, oddly enough, completely and utterly. Clean sheets, we've managed 22, they've managed 10. Yellow cards, this was ah this was mad. 97 yellow cards for Arsenal, 119 for Everton.
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
which means that all in all, that is 200 quick maths and 16 yellow cards in 64 games. twelve That's more than three a game. That's quite an intense disciplinary record. There's also been 13 red cards between the two, five for Arsenal, eight for Everton. So for once, we're actually in the um we in the better half of a ah disciplinary record, which which is nice to see.

Recap of Previous Season's Encounters

00:06:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, whenever we talk about the history of these clubs, especially on these sections of the crossover, we always talk about what happened last season. And last season, ah the first game was a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park on the 17th of September. Trossard, yeah, Trossard, got the goal in the 69th minute and we had 74% possession. We were, we absolutely dominated that game.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
um We had four shots on target out of that time, which was quite a small amount, considering the domination that we showed. Martinelli opened the scoring, but was ruled off or offside. And it was, oh it was such a silly, tight offside. It's when VAR was going mad.
00:06:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
but it' sort of very close-off side rules. And then Trostard got the goal. It was a really nice first-time left-footed finish into the top left-hand corner, beating Pickford out. And then Mikolenko actually saved it going 2-0 with a great block from, I think it was, if memory serves me, as Martin Erdegard, and the last sort of minute shot on goal, but he did very, very well to get across. The second game was it's It's a game that's tinged a little bit with Arsenal fans with a bit of sadness. and Not because, I mean, we won the game. We won the game. It was the 19th of May, 2024, and we won 2-1 at the Emirates. If that date rings a bell, it's because it was the last day of the season last year. And we actually, for the briefest, well, actually, no, not for the briefest of periods, for about 50 minutes,
00:07:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
In fact, no, lets let's be realistic. That's 70 minutes because of the halftime break. It looked as though we'd thrown the league away. Because on the 40th minute, Chisana Gay hit a free kick, which was deflected off of Declan's rice head and sailed into the Arsenal Garden. We went one nil down when we had to win that game. Obviously, it relied on Manchester City dropping points as well. There was nothing we could do about that, but we had to win that game.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Tommy Asu then equalised with a really nice, tidy first time finish into the bottom left hand corner, but it was still only 1-0. Still only 1-0. And Pickford was just a miracle man that day. He was throwing himself here there. And it seems like he has a personal vendetta against Arsenal winning the league. He did not want us to win that title and was desperate to keep the score line at 1-0. But eventually,
00:08:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah couple of loose balls sort of floated around the box and the 89th minute Havertz put us ahead to make it 2-1 on the 89th minute it was it was getting seriously close and seriously tight but at the end of the day City went on to win the league because they won that game it was a scrappy victory a tired victory I'll be honest it looked like a very tired victory and it It's a weird one. We won, but it didn't feel like it. It felt like we'd lost the title, which we had done, which we had done. But we realistically, we did that at Fulham and we did that um Aston Villa and Liverpool, you know. So the writing was pretty much already on the wall. When you're relying on city to drop points, even nowadays with the form they're in, I wouldn't rely on city to drop points

Analysis of Everton's Current Form

00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
for us to win the league. If we were still in that position, I'd still go in with a pretty, you know, it's not gonna happen for you.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's looking back at the past and the history. Next up, when we come back, we're going to have a little more of a deep dive into Everton. Look at their manager, their current form, goal-scoring problems, and a couple of individual players. So we'll be back just after this message from Zencaster.
00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
and welcome back to the Daily Arsenal podcast. It is Friday and we are looking forward to our fixture against Everton to tomorrow at three o'clock from the Emirates.

Historical Respect and Current Form

00:10:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've talked about the history of this fixture and the history of the two clubs in general, how they're basically both steeped in it and how they're both powerhouses of the top flight in English football. And there should be an element of respect there, really, between the two clubs. But as time has changed in the Premier League and you know the quality of teams has improved and declined, Everton, the balance has become unbalanced. It's become an unbalanced fight between the two.
00:10:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Arsenal are definitely weighted favourites in this sort of fixture and happened for a while.

Critique of Sean Dyche's Management

00:11:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now we look at Everton a bit closer, we obviously we prepared this to ask Gus today but like I say he's he's ill and we wish him wish him all the well, we hope he gets better soon. Sean Dyche, the manager of Everton Football Club, managed three teams and has passed, the last one being Burnley before he took over here at Everton. He was at Burnley for a long time and for those who aren't as familiar with the Premier League, he he became synonymous with the style of football called Daish Ball, which was sort of the Bernie style of defend well, boot it up the other end and hope for the best.
00:11:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, very, very, it was kind of, it was like, a it was a joke for simplistic football and sort of a throwback to the classic football of the 80s where you just hoof it up and hope for the best. You got a big center forward up there, takes it down, nets you a goal. You're probably gonna concede a few goals, but defensively you should be sound. That was diaschable. So when he came into Everton who were really, really struggling at the time and, you know, looking at relegation,
00:12:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
He seemed as though a safe pair of hands. He'd only even been relegated with Burnley the year before, but he'd been with Burnley for a long time and had done really good things with them. So a lot of players, people even, sorry, consider him a safe pair of hands. For me, obviously I'm not an Everton fan, so I can't speak for all Everton fans. A safe pair of hands, yes.
00:12:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
but an underwhelming pair of hands as well. I think it's fair to say. There's not a huge amount of ambition in bringing Sean Dyche into a football club, I don't think. I like the guy, he's very funny, he gives very frank and honest interviews. Sometimes he can be a bit abrasive, but when it comes to really progressing and playing beautiful football, I think there were better options available at the time, and I think Dyche is not one of those that you would necessarily go for.
00:12:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean So far for Everton, they've played 79 under Schoenbeicher, won 26, drawn 23 and lost 30. So a 32% win rate isn't awful. It's not awful for, you know, in terms of a lower end of the table club,
00:13:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But even since he's come in, they've struggled and they've really, really struggled.

Everton's League Position and Goal-Scoring Concerns

00:13:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they've been kind of lucky the last few years to survive in the Premier League. I mean, they had their points deduction last year as well, which was just, that was that was rough going for them as a huge points deduction for financial irregularities and breaches of financial fair play, I believe it was. But just, I wonder if he still has the support of the base.
00:13:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sean Dyche, honestly, because it's been another underwhelming season. I mean, I had them as my prediction to go down. honestly and let if we look at the form now they I was gonna ask Gus if it was a welcome or an unwelcome rest that they had last week because of course Everton didn't play last week because their game was stormed off by storm Dara the storm that had me and my missus clinging for dear life on a plane landing at into Manchester Airport um it was too late it was deemed too dangerous to play so Everton haven't played
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
since the game before, which was actually as a 4-0 victory over wolves. um I'd also wanted to ask about the new stadium. I don't know a huge amount about that. We'll probably pick them up in the next crossover that we do with Everton. But they beat Wolves 4-0 in their last game. Obviously, like I said, postponed against Liverpool. Lost United 4-0. Then they had 2-0-0 draws, which were against Brentford and West Ham, and they lost to Southampton. So apart from the 4-0 victory over Wolves, they have been on a rough patch of form, and it has been noticed around the rest of the Premier League. So in the league this year so far, three wins, five draws, six defeats.
00:14:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's 14 points, which leaves them in 15th place. And, you know, it's not like it's completely the end of the world yet. 14 points is still considerably better than a couple of the teams have managed. But if I get the table up quickly now.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ipswich have nine points. So the, the relegation zone is, there's a big drop to the relegation zone. Ipswich and Wolves have nine points. And then next is Palace with 13 and then Leicester and Everton with 14. So they're in that danger spot. But if Ipswich, Wolves and Southampton keep being as poor as they have been, then Everton might survive just by virtue of terrible teams being terrible. But there's something we have to pick up about Everton, which is something that I've always thought about them as a club.
00:15:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
goals. They do not score enough goals. They never have done and in terms of having a prolific striker, realistically since Tim Cahill I think, he's the one who jumps out to me. Was Lukaku there briefly? I think Lukaku might have been there as a youngster briefly but those two brilliant strikers did really well

Key Everton Players: McNeil and Pickford

00:16:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
for them. Since then they've relied relied a lot on Dominic Calvert-Lewin who when he's on his game is a great player and he's he's a player that most people in the league want to do well because you know he's a big English number nine we hope for the best for those sort of players but injury has just completely decimated that man's career
00:16:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's just not reliable enough. And when you look at the goal scoring record this season as well, it leaves room for concern. So Southampton have scored the least goals in the Premier League this season. They've only scored 11 goals. And that's 11 goals in 15 games. That's a really poor return. Next, in terms of the bottom goal scorers, there's three teams. Joint, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, and Everton.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
all of which have only scored 14 goals. Again, 14 goals in 15 games for those three teams with Everton being one of them. I know we have a lot of defensive issues at the bat currently Arsenal, but that gives me hope because Everton's goal scoring capability just doesn't seem to be there and hasn't seemed to be there for a while as well. Dwight MacNeil is their top goalscorer, three goals and three assists is is pretty decent.
00:17:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
but he's not a striker, he's sort of a creator. So I don't know what you're doing there. If I was gonna pick the most important player personally, it'd be Pickford, because he's shown time and time again, he's shown such loyalty to that club as well. He could have gone anywhere, could have Jordan Pickford. England International who did incredible things, always does incredible things with England, and he's a very, very, very good goalkeeper for Everton. How he's still at the club baffles me. He must really like Merseyside, but I think he's their most important player because he's the player who keeps them in so much. And without him, if they if they didn't have Pickford, they would be in trouble. Big, big trouble. And one of the most prestigious teams in this Premier League could be in danger of going down. Anyway, that's enough about Everton. This is an Arsenal podcast. If it was a crossover, I'd be happier talking about them. but
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not a crossover.

Arsenal's Recent Victory and Squad Rotations

00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gus is ill. This is just the daily arsenal today. So we're going to take a break. When we come back, we're going to chat about arsenal and how much I think we're going to beat them by. Right. We'll be back just after this message on the Global Sports Podcast Network.
00:19:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And welcome back to this final section of the Everton preview episode on the Daney Arsenal podcast, part of the Global Sports Podcast Network. First of all, um we did it in yesterday's episode, but it's worth mentioning again. In terms of form, it's been a little bit patchy, but we just came off of a very, very convincing 3-0 victory against Monaco. All goals scored in open play as well. Very encouraging to see.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah not having to write rely on set pieces. A good victory at home. The Emirates looked like it was bouncing. it Excuse me, it was a bit frustrating at times. For sure it was frustrating because the amount of chances we had in the first half, goodness me, we should have put some stuff away. We absolutely should have put some stuff away. But, you know, hopefully that'll come with encouragement and with confidence and maybe Martinelli and that's a goal.
00:19:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to come onto it. I can see some rotation happening in this game. The defensive conundrum. This is a big one. Okay. I've still not seen any word. I'm recording this on Thursday. I've not seen any word on Gabriel and Califiori's state at the moment. And they are the first choices for that team. Timber at right back. Saliba, Gabriel, Califiori. That is the back four that we want. And realistically, we kind of need back as well.

Defensive Options and Young Talent

00:20:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
it looks as though they're probably not gonna play again. So, who's gonna come in? Well, Kivio, I think, actually had a pretty decent game, yesterday, yeah, yesterday, yeah, against Monaco. I think he had a pretty decent game against Monaco. And at left-back, has been a there's been a coppery of different players. has's been um There's been Timber, there's been Sinchenko, but he's injured. Tieni still isn't getting a look in, despite Jamie's protest, he's desperate to have Tieni back in the squad.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I am actually going to echo Jamie here. After his performance in the first 60 minutes of that game, I think Miles Lewis Skelly has earned another start. The youngster was composed. He was impressive in a Champions League game as well. Let's not forget it was was it his actual professional debut for Arsenal?
00:21:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like in terms of obviously he came on against City and he'd come on once or twice as featured briefly. But in terms of his start, I think that was his first start for Arsenal, which was in the Champions League.
00:21:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not, you know, there's not a gloss over that for a youngster. It's remarkable. And he was brilliant. He was so composed. I would be happy to see him starting and left back again against Everton. Because again, when it comes to their goal threat, I think he can deal with it. They don't have as much as Monaco had. And I think he'll be able to cope with it really well.
00:21:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
In terms of our creativity, Erdogan is still struggling a bit. i Whether he's not fully fit, whether he rushed back, whether he's just lacking a bit of confidence, I don't know. But I mean, in the game against Monaco, he looked a bit off sorts. He wasn't great at the weekend either. He didn't really impact the game. Again, I wouldn't be distraught if Ethan Waniari started this game.
00:22:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Now, I know that's putting two youngsters on a game, which is a Premier League game, and we need to be winning these Premier League games now. We have to win every single game. there's There's no doubting about that. However, I think he's good enough. And I think, given the opportunity to start against a team like Everton, who are struggling defensively, who aren't the highest level potentially of competition we're going to face, I think he could have a really big impact and it'll give either Erdogan the rest he needs or the kick up the backside that he needs to really push on forward. So I would i wouldn't be surprised if we saw Wanyeri, maybe not both of them starting, but one of those two starting, Wanyeri or Marzlo Skeli. One of those two I reckon will start. Probably more likely Skeli, but I'd love to see both. Now, I would also be tempted to rest another player.

Predictions and Player Rotations

00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Saka. It's not like I don't respect Everton, they're a Premier League side and we're in that we're in that time period now where every single Premier League side is dangerous. They are, there's no getting away from it. Saka is so good but must be absolutely shattered because he has not stopped playing football as that man. I would be tempted and they did it in the last game last year, I'd be tempted to start Martinelli on the right and Trossard on the left. Honestly. Just to give Sacra a bit of time to recover, hopefully give Martinelli the chance to get his confidence back and Trossard just because he plays on the left. No, Trossard because he's more suited to that left-hand side. Will we see Sterling? I don't know. I think Josh might have had a point a week or so ago. I think that might have been it for Sterling's career after that terrible game that he played for us.
00:24:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
So yeah, I think i'd love I'd quite like to see that actually. Marcellini on the right and Trossard on the left. Just to give sack of that break, really. In terms of predictions, I think we'll win it. I do think we will win it. I'm more confident about this game than I have been about several games previously, just because I worry about Everton and the direction they're going in. So I'm gonna say that we're gonna win this game. They're not gonna score.
00:24:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do you know what, I think think it could actually be a bit of a route. I was gonna go conservative, but I'm gonna go 4-0. 4-0, we're gonna win. And one of the defenders will score, possibly timber, if he's fit. I'd love to see timber fit. Playing it right back or in center back, that'd be great. Not to party it right back. Good God, we need to stop doing that. Sorry, that was ah was really visceral, wasn't it? We need to stop playing him at right back.
00:25:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah, I could possibly see Timber getting a goal. Maybe one of the midfielders, Marino. It'd be nice to see Marino get on the score sheet. And I'm always gonna say Martin Elliott. I always want that boy to score. But yeah, I'm gonna say 4-0. So thank you very much for listening. I hope you enjoyed this impromptu solo episode. Sorry it wasn't a crossover.

Conclusion and Well Wishes

00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, we send our best to Gus. We hope he gets better as soon as possible. And until next week, when we can review this game in full from the Daily Arsenal podcast, it's time to say thank you for listening and goodbye.
