00:00:41
Speaker

I'm your host, Sherri Custer, a stay-at-home mom who built a seven-figure business with zero experience, but the willingness to figure it out.
00:01:05
Speaker
Welcome. Here we are again on an episode of our Brilliantista podcast. And today I want to talk about values. And the reason I want to talk about values with you guys is the fact that this has been something that has transformed my life. In the last couple of months, I feel like I went from struggling to figure some things out, to gaining immense amount of clarity. And I owe it all
00:01:33
Speaker
to two words, core values. So because of that, why wouldn't I want to share that with you? Yeah, that's what I'm going to do here on this episode. So what we're going to talk about to get specific is how to get around to figuring out what are your core values.

Importance of Identifying Core Values

00:01:52
Speaker
And before you want to jump in and say, I already know what mine are, I'm going to tell you, I did too. So I thought I had mine years ago, sat down, wrote down, went through a whole process. Took me days, actually. So I'm actually going to make it a little bit easier for you and hopefully not take you days. But I went through the process of trying to figure this out by a couple of things. And I'm not going to tell you what those were, because that didn't help me.
00:02:16
Speaker
But I thought I knew what they were and what they had done was kind of put me all over the place. I wasn't getting to the point of feeling alignment. So what I want to do with you guys today is help you to walk through what it's going to look like for you. And I'll also share with you my story, kind of how I uncovered some of this as well.
00:02:35
Speaker
So let's just backtrack a little. So for those of you who aren't exactly sure what I mean when I say core values, we're talking about words that resonate with us. So things that matter to us in life. If you just take the root of the word core, you know, it's the center. It's the root. It's the, it's the getting to the heart of you, I would say would be a great analogy. Also, I love this analogy. When starting a business, it's really important to start with a foundation and
00:03:03
Speaker
For us, when I would start a business, it was really, it was kind of backtracking and saying to yourself, not only did you want to see where this was going, but what were the pillars that we were going to start and always come back to every single time we were looking at making decisions.

Core Values: Pillars for Decision-Making

00:03:22
Speaker
So if you ever have gone to a construction site and they were about ready to put up a big, huge building, you would see that they would drive these rods down into the ground
00:03:31
Speaker
And then, then they pour the foundation. So looking at your core values, these are the things that are your rods. These are the things that are your, before you even begin the foundation, they're what you get to build who you are on and your businesses as well. So if you have your own business, this is a great exercise for you. So where we're going to start is that Google search bar, that great place we go to, to help us to learn and grow.
00:03:58
Speaker
And what I did when I first got started was I went to Google and I typed in core values. And then I put on the end of that list. L I S T. So I came up with all kinds of results and it kind of overwhelmed me. So I've made that a little bit easier and we put together a list for you. So you can go to brilliantista.com.
00:04:20
Speaker
and get instant access to our worksheet. So this is actually going to help you to uncover what your core values are. So with that said is I took this list and going through this process the whole entire time I was thinking of you. How can I figure this out for myself and how can I turn around and help other women do it too?
00:04:40
Speaker
So that's why we created the worksheet. So here is the key to uncovering your core values. I want you to find those five or six core values, but I also want to help you go a little bit further. I was encouraged after reading the book Dare to Lead by Brene Brown to uncover your top two core values.
00:05:02
Speaker
Okay, it took me a little while to come up with five or six. Now I have to figure out what are the two and I had to figure out how I can find the common denominator in my core values. So what I did is I created this list and I printed it off, put it in my bag and said, when I have an hour, I'm gonna sit down and I'm just gonna go through this list and I'm just gonna check things off.
00:05:27
Speaker
So what I did is I printed off this list, which you can find at brilliantista.com, and I'd say, does this word resonate with me? Does gratitude, things like, do I have a core value of collaboration? Do I have a core value of achievement? Do I have a core value of respect? And I would just go down that list and I would say, does this resonate with me? Does this resonate with me? And as I was doing that, I noticed I was checking up a lot more than two. So this was not gonna get me where I needed to go.
00:05:54
Speaker
but I just kept doing it. I said, this is just what I'm going to do. And then I realized that there were words that connected together. They were through me, they connected together. Now you might look at my words and you won't see a connection the way I saw connection, but I saw the connection through my own personal filters, things that resonated with me. And that's what I want you to do as well. And as you're going through and you're seeing these connections, as the instructions tell you on the worksheet,
00:06:22
Speaker
it'll tell you what to do so you'll know what to do. I started grouping those together. And then one by one, I started seeing these groups form through my little check marks. And I started realizing, Oh my gosh, like, these are kind of the same. And these are kind of the same. And these are kind of the same. And then I ended up with about 14 groups, which again, it's not going to help me if I have to figure out how to get down to 2.
00:06:46
Speaker
but I kept going a little bit further and a little bit further and starting to notice that some of these groups, and it was almost instantaneously, I all of a sudden realized, oh my gosh.
00:06:57
Speaker
I was looking for a word throughout some of these groups that kind of rose to the top that really resonated with me in a big, big way that kind of covered a bigger picture of what a lot of those were. And I ended up finding out that I had two core values that I could truly stand on and feel that it helped me to make decisions in a big, big way.

Community and Courage as Core Values

00:07:20
Speaker
Now, my two core values that I uncovered and I'll share with you why was community and courage. Initially, when I had done my core values a long time ago, I had a core value of love. I had a core value of family and health and relationship and respect and wealth.
00:07:40
Speaker
None of those obviously said courage or community right but i realize that there was a reason why family was important to me and there was a reason why relationships is important to me and there was a reason why respect was important to me and all of these other things and it came down to those two those two things why did i want wealth
00:08:02
Speaker
Well, what I wanted more than I wanted wealth, and I don't want to say I don't want wealth in my life, but I felt so wealthy. I always say I feel like one of the richest women in the world because of the relationships that I have and the communities that I have built, was community was at the top, top, top of something I personally needed and that I was driven
00:08:25
Speaker
to help create for other women because it felt like something was missing in so many people's lives, which is why if you're listening to this podcast, you realize this is a podcast designed to help bring women together to understand
00:08:41
Speaker
that we have so much more in common, but also a community that pours into other women and helps other women create a better life, really stepping into your brilliance, right? So hello, that's what's most important to me. That's a huge, huge value. Now, the other value that I came to uncover, which was courage, was at the top of everything of love. And you'll go back again.
00:09:06
Speaker
love, family, health, all these other things that I thought were really important to me was courage. I had to have the courage to step into relationships because for me, relationships don't just magically happen. You have to work at them. You have to put energy and effort into them. You have to do things that don't always come easy.
00:09:26
Speaker
And so if I want, if relationships mattered to me, I had to be courageous enough to work through them. Love, it takes courage to love. And we can throw the word love around in hopes that it fills us up. But sometimes there's vulnerable moments to love somebody and you have to have that courage to tell somebody that you love them and to love and guess what? Receive love.
00:09:52
Speaker
I didn't want to just pour out love. It was the courage to receive love, allow others to love on me and be okay with that. Being courageous to get out there and maybe join something called Camp Gladiator and be with a group of women that seem to be really badass and what they're able to do.
00:10:12
Speaker
and I'm over here huffing and puffing, but be courageous to show up and to get out there and to work out and to eat right and be courageous enough to say no to something that maybe everybody else is saying yes to and being a little bit of an oddball. And there's so many other ways, like being courageous to teach people how to treat me and being able to say what I needed to say when something
00:10:35
Speaker
hurt me or when things would happen in my life that sometimes I would just like let go. I would just go like, Oh, just let it go. But then I was like, no, because it's just hurting me and it's just hurting the other person. And so it's time to step into courage and help to heal this and help to make this better. And so that's how I came up with mine. It was peeling back the layers and going a little bit deeper.
00:11:02
Speaker
And I will tell you, it was almost magical how it all happened. But when it did happen, this confusion that I have been in for, I say months, but I'm going to say almost like a lifetime.

Core Values in Decision-Making and Business

00:11:15
Speaker
Like for those of you who are trying to figure out what you want to be when you grow up, figuring out your core values is going to make a bigger impact on you than you can even imagine.
00:11:26
Speaker
So the reason why I'm pushing you and I'm encouraging you to go beyond finding those five or six and go a little bit further is because of what it did for me, right? So if it's done something for you, you want, you want to tell everybody else, well, I have a platform and I have this opportunity to share this with you and I know what it can do for you. And that's why I created the worksheet. Now,
00:11:53
Speaker
Here's the other thing about core values. It becomes your beacon. So if you've ever heard the saying that successful people make decisions quickly, I wanna share with you my thought. When I first heard that, I thought, there is no way. Like I'm successful and I do not make decisions quickly. That sounds a little irresponsible. That would not be a good plan. I don't know why they say that. I don't know why people would even think that.
00:12:21
Speaker
until I started realizing how important core values played a role. What I uncovered for myself was once I knew what mine were, saying yes and saying no became super easy. And I'm not talking about like a little bit easy. I'm talking about really easy. Like there was no hesitation. There was no, hmm, let me think about it. It's like super easy.
00:12:48
Speaker
And I can give you examples all day long about what that actually looks like, like literally making a decision to bail on one of my companies because I started realizing I'm putting all this energy, effort, and time into something. And I had been pulling myself like really strong taffy.
00:13:04
Speaker
back and forth going oh i know i should be doing this but i know i should be doing this but i need to put time in this but and all the sudden i was like oh my gosh no stop it stop stop stop that's a no go we're not going there right now like that is so not what we're doing and that's how easy it became.
00:13:22
Speaker
literally overnight. So do I want you to do this? Yes, I want you to do this. Why do I want you to do this? Because you've got brilliant things to do. You have greatness inside of you. You have something to do and I want to help you do it and do it with conviction and do it with passion and be able to move forward faster and faster and faster and faster every single day. Here's the other thing.
00:13:48
Speaker
I know that it will help you in building your value. So the other word in core values is your value. It will help you to see what value you have and contribution you have to give into the world. Because when you start to see who you are, right, because that's really what this comes down to, and it's a huge part, you'll start to see that there's so much of what you are and who you are and your talents and your gifts and
00:14:16
Speaker
the things that drive you, that that really is, whether you want to call it your calling or your purpose or whatever you want to say that it is, whether it's for now or for a lifetime, that's going to drive you in a big, big way. So I want you to make that happen for yourself.
00:14:34
Speaker
So if you're looking to make this fun and you want to just take it to another level, because come on, we can have fun, right? We're girls, let's get together and we can have some fun. Maybe set aside a little girls night and everybody print off these lists and everybody write down and go through that list and check it off. And you can get a little bit of feedback from your girlfriends, but inside it's always going to come down to you. So if you have a team, so if you're building a team and you've got, or you have a company, you have a group of women,
00:15:03
Speaker
I encourage you not only do you want to have company core values, but you want to have individual core values as well. So if you're a part of a company that has established core values, and I happen to be a part of a company, I've partnered with a company on the side who has core values, I love their core values. What I love is I love seeing that company literally make decisions based on those core values, which means to me, they are walking their values. They are living their values, and that's important.

Core Values in Network Marketing

00:15:32
Speaker
their values are different than my values, but there's things of my values that resonates completely with theirs, and that's important. So for your company, hopefully you've established some core values and you're sticking to them. So when you make decisions, just like I said, you can measure those decisions up to those core values, and it should make it a lot easier to say yes and to say no.
00:15:57
Speaker
So the other is for a team. If you're building a direct sales business or a network marketing business like I am, you would want your team to know who they are and what's most important to them. I have said this for years, that please do not join something just because you want to make money or just because you love the products. That's not a reason to join.
00:16:20
Speaker
there must be some connection. You must be able to feel in alignment with the other components of your life because it'll make it so much easier to talk about it. So if you're struggling with talking about your company or talking about your products or you're not getting the results that you want or you're in fear or you're in hesitation and, you know, yeah, there's some growth that we have to go through.
00:16:45
Speaker
and all of those things. But there's probably something else that's not right and is out of alignment. And it may be because it's not connected to who you are and where your core values lie. So you might want to think about that. Just going to put that out there because for me, that was a definite. That was one of the reasons why I was able to say no.
00:17:07
Speaker
and move on from different things in my life because that just made a difference. And that was even back when I had six core values. That was huge for me. Taking it to two made all the difference in the world for me to be able to make my decisions even faster.

Empowerment Through Core Values

00:17:22
Speaker
So with all of that said, I hope that I've gotten you excited. I hope that you feel that this is something that you really want to do and you don't want to wait another day. I'm trying to make this as simple and as easy as possible, but it's going to take you to take time. But it will be time that will help you to save time in the end. Because every day that we go by and we are not exactly sure, are we doing the right thing?
00:17:52
Speaker
Are we spending our time and energy in the way that we should? I know what that's like. It's no fun. Plain and simple, no fun. So why do it? Don't do it. Stop. Stop. Pour yourself a cup of my favorite matcha latte recipe, which I'll be posting a YouTube video on soon, or whatever your favorite drink is, whether you've got a yummy green tea beverage that you like, or maybe you're a kombucha girl. Hopefully you guys are eating healthy and taking good care of your gut.
00:18:22
Speaker
But sit down, relax, enjoy your moment and enjoy who you are and uncover yourself.
