Speaker: Well hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a Friends Rewatch Pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?

Speaker: Oh, just awesome as I can possibly be, Al. I'm excited to talk about this episode of Friends with you. Yeah, as am I with you. It's Sunday afternoon. No, it's not Sunday. feels like a Sunday, but it's not Monday. is.

Speaker: It's a Very nice Labor Day. Indeed. Yeah, I'm excited. Yeah, it's a good one. and I did say to you before we got started, I was going to attempt something. So I was looking through the podcast analytics and unsurprisingly, most of our listeners are in the United States, just a sheer matter of numbers. But the second took me by surprise. So I'm going to attempt to say, hi, you gozimasu, arigato gozaimasu to all of our listeners in Japan, who were the second most listeners are.

Speaker: Really? I was pleasantly surprised. Yes. Okay, but what did you just say? I said it was good evening because the podcast will come out in the evening that time, I think. And thank you very much to all of our listeners. Oh, very nice. Yeah, yeah. I was just looking through the thing about where our listeners are and it just made me smile that we have a lot of listeners in Japan.

Speaker: I think that is awesome. yeah my ah My older son, Fred, wants to go to Japan. it's That's one of the places he wants to go to. Yeah, it is right at the top of my list of the places. um My brother-in-law and his family just went. And we haven't really heard yet how the trip went. But from what I understand, they had just a tremendous time. They toured around and...

Speaker: Went to various towns and cities and saw lots of different things. So I'm excited to hear about it because, yeah, it is it is right up there of places I want to visit too. Well, that is amazing.

Speaker: Yes. Yeah. Very beautiful. and And I would, yes, very good people, obviously. Clearly smart, well-rounded people is what I'm discovering. so I was quite excited to see that little fact. Yeah. This week it is the the one with Joey's dirty day. we Before we get into bamboozled, it was quite funny. Kate just went through the questions, as she always does, and thought we had reviewed possibly two different episodes because our questions are so different.

Speaker: Oh, oh, interesting. And at the top of my questions, I have the one that Joey's darted today. I believe at yours, you have episode 14. So because of that, she wanted just to check because there was nothing remotely close, apparently.

Speaker: That's interesting because I stopped writing questions after I got to seven because I got scared that that I would, ah like we probably already had at least one matching one and I didn't want to have to throw out any more questions. Yeah, interesting I also have seven. She didn't look at my two extras, but out of our five, we are good to go.

Speaker: Okay, sounds great. All right, who is up first today? Well, it's even episode, so that would be you. Fantastic. Mr. Al. All right right. I'm ready. You've won the last two in a row, so let's see what happens here.

Speaker: At the start of the episode, how long has it been since Chandler broke up chandler and Kathy broke up?

Speaker: they meant They mention how long it's been since they broke up. Has it been three days?

Speaker: You're close. Five days. Oh, it was Two weeks. It was two days. The other direction. you know know I was going to say less, but then that left you really with a fifty fifty chance. was yesterday. That's right. All right.

Speaker: it was yesterday that's right all right and So in the opening scene, Ross is walking around with something. What is it? Oh, that's a great question. I have no idea.

Speaker: I'm going to guess he's eating or drinking something. I don't know. Because it was a little bit of a theme. has been a little of theme. I'm to go with box of cereal. Oh, good guess, but no.

Speaker: No. No, no. What was he walking around? Would you like to give you a hint? I'm not going to get the point, but give me a hint. Let's see if I it. He's playing with something. He's playing with something. And then he knocks over the lamp.

Speaker: Oh, he's with the fishing rod. Yes. That's right. I remember that. I remember whacking the lamp because I do think the he throws it down afterwards is very funny. Yes. Yes. That's right. Somebody knocked over a lamp. Yes.

Speaker: All right. My question two for you. Why does Mr. Waltham think Rachel will like Dee Fledermaus? ah Because two of the three tenors. Who wouldn't who wouldn't want to go and see two of the three tenors?

Speaker: Yes. All right. You are off the board. All right. What color is Ross's shirt and tie that he wears to the opera?

Speaker: All right. Again, I'm struggling. I don't remember at all. So I'm just, I feel like it's an easy answer, but I'm going to have to go with the black tie and the white shirt. Oh, it's orange. It's orange. an orange shirt and an orange tie with the black black suit.

Speaker: That's a bold choice for the opera. Well, he's wearing that all day. i assume that wears that for the opera. Interesting. Because she shows up and Yeah, or whenever they were going, right? I don't know that they ever got to the opera. You know, it's a good point. don't they're doing. Yeah, I don't know if they made it there. It's a good point. All right, let's see if you can stretch your lead here. is Your question three. When Chandler is throwing cards into a bowl and Joey comes back from his fishing trip, what is Phoebe eating?

Speaker: She's eating saltines. She is eating saltines. You are yeah the money. Yes. Yeah. Good, good job. oh Yeah. Well, she's eating saltines also.

Speaker: um Whenever Rachel comes in and is trying to get them, because her she's got her morning sickness at night. That's right. She's eating. Yeah. So she's eating saltines a lot. and She is. Yeah. they're They're a staple in this episode.

Speaker: All right, so Emily, she's having a terrible day. She is. She's losing her mind. What almost ran her over? What almost ran her over?

Speaker: All I remember that she got interrogated at the airport. Is it going to have to just be a taxi? Nope.

Speaker: No, warm struggle. What almost ran her over? And the way she says it is... Why that is stuck with me in my brain is because it's like, what? What could it be? What could it be? Something interesting. Something interesting on the street of New York. Almost a ran her over.

Speaker: I don't think they really have them there, but i'm just going to say a rickshaw because it sounds offbeat. What's a rickshaw? What's rickshaw? A rickshaw is kind of like ah a carriage, but it's a guy on the front with like a bike kind of thing. And you sit in the back. kind of but I never knew that that's what that was called. i think is yeah I think it's a fairly generic term. You know, I'm not sure if other things. Yeah, I think there is another word for Yeah, is a guy on a bike or running at the front and then like two people sit in the back? Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. i Or riding is he running or riding a bike? I think it could be either. Okay, Rickshaw. Yeah, I've never heard of that. No, she she says that she almost got ran over by one of your wiener carts.

Speaker: I missed that. That's a great line. Oh, it was so funny. And then she I got interrogated. And you know apparently and that she's like, got almost ran over. And then she's like, and apparently I look like somebody who would be smuggling cocaine in a balloon. That's right. Yeah.

Speaker: oh man well I am officially on the struggle bus you can win this week with this question dang okay I haven't watched this episode in a couple of days and apparently it shows I'm going to have do better oh I'm sorry oh don't be sorry it's my own fault I could have watched it today but watched a few days ago did the questions why did Rachel punch a woman in the face not because she said her name was Rachel Greep no Um, because, like, that girl went inside. And then was it because she was standing too close to her?

Speaker: It's not. you get another guess. She did she did something to Rachel.

Speaker: Oh. Did she make fun of her? She did not. It something ridiculous. Well, she tried to steal her umbrella. That's right. Yeah. Dang it.

Speaker: Yeah, she did. Yeah, she did. Yeah. ah All right. ah Name two things that Joey had in his tackle box.

Speaker: All right. I've written this in my notes, I think. So a glow worm. Okay. And then I hope you're going to be kind to me here. Because it's something is something like a Jiminy Jangle...

Speaker: yeah need What do you think that would be? i mean, it's got to be some kind of lure. um Is it just, like okay, okay, good. Yeah, and I feel like that's not really what it was called. He was just being silly. I agree. I've written it down because I love the way he said it. Like, it's a fun fun one.

Speaker: Yes, yes, yes. Because he said like a guggly worm and then a glow pop jiggly jammer. Yes. But they're different. Okay. And then I also would have accepted pliers.

Speaker: and Indeed. Because he also had those out on the table. Good, good thinking. all right Well, I've got my fifth and final one for you. Again, you can win with this. um this is I think this is a tricky one. It was just mentioned very, very briefly. According to Monica, where did Rachel and Barry jet off to when they first got together?

Speaker: Vale. Vale. ne no doubt there should have been no doubt in my mind i was going and i was gonna ask you that one right i sure was funny okay all right well this is my consolation question oh all right so what was ross drinking during the like not the opening scene but like the after the Because after he gets rid of the fishing line or the fishing pole and all that, and then they do the opening scene and then they're in there and then they're standing there in the kitchen and ah Ross is drinking something like while they're talking. What was it? Right.

Speaker: and You're like, right. If I don't know, I'm just going to have to go with juice because people need juice. Well, it is juice. Okay. but i More specific specific? Yes. All right. well No, no. Don't be sorry. Because it is a very specific. There's no label on it, but the shape of the bottle is a very obvious shape of what it is. And the color.

Speaker: like it Okay. Okay.

Speaker: So I'm sort of going through your staple basic juices in my head. came And I mean, I think like it's, it's, I'm just going to go with the basic simple orange juice.

Speaker: okay It's so close, right? And I put in parentheses orange juice. I would accept it. So I would say ding, ding, ding. But you would have gotten like extra points if you had said Sunny D. it obviously Sunny D. Right. And it's sort of orange juice, but a chemically infused. Yeah. And that is not... ah Right. it is It is not orange juice. It is something else.

Speaker: All right. A dominant performance, I would say, from you there. Another win. um i have two more, and I think you said you have two more. I do. I do. All right. Well, why don't, let's see. I'll ask you, what's the name of the studio where Joey is filming with Charlton Heston?

Speaker: I know this. Yes, you do. It is Silver Cup Studios. It is. That's one of my tabs I have open like random information. Nice. Yeah. Okay.

Speaker: What is the name of the opera that they're going to? Well, that I think I mentioned is De Fledermaus. Yes, it is. Yes, which I don't think I've got in my notes. I did Google it to see and it is a real thing and a real opera and all of that. It is And I can tell you all about it. I'm excited to hear. That's another one of my tabs. I love it. All right. My last one for you is Monica says she can't leave the strip club without getting what from a dancer?

Speaker: The name of her carpet guy. the the The name ah yeah of the carpet guy. That's exactly is All right. And then why was Joshua going to the nightclub? at ah like what What was the purpose of that? Oh, because he invested in it.

Speaker: he's He's fronted some money for the nightclub. Yeah. Joshua's clearly doing very well for himself, even post-divorce. ah you Exactly. Exactly. Yes.

Speaker: All right. Well, yeah, that is another another good win for you. I have got to change up my strategy, I feel. So we'll work on that for next week. But this week we are diving into the one with Joey's dirty day. We start off in the girls' apartment. Joey's getting ready for his fishing trip. First things first, how do you feel about fishing? I feel like you if you're out, you might enjoy a bit of fishing.

Speaker: I do. I actually very much do enjoy fishing. And i i um I, yeah, I enjoy some fishing. It takes me a minute, though, to like get myself like prepared and in the zone to actually take the fish off and put the minnows on and all of that. It takes me a minute to remember. right Not remember. i guess to have my confidence back because I don't fish all the time. Right. Right.

Speaker: But, um oh, yeah, I do enjoy i do enjoy some fishing. I had a funny feeling the Woolisons could be found out on the lake when it's a little cooler yeah enjoying fishing. yeah.

Speaker: Yeah. Yes, yes. Well, Joey's excited that we find out that this is an annual fishing trip with his dad, and this year he gets to tell him he's going to be in a movie with Charlton Heston. which is yeah big big news a big break for joy is happening um chandler comes out he's still depressed he's in his sweats he's he's still sad and down in the dumps about kathy yes kim we just talked just very briefly about charlton heston because this is not the first time that we've talked about charlton heston let's talk about charlton heston what did you find out

Speaker: Okay, so do you know the last time that we talked about Charlton Heston? No, it just rings a bell that we have. Yes, and we have because he's the Planet of the Apes guy.

Speaker: And we have talked about that last thing. Yes, yes, yes. And then the woman and all of that. And so it's funny to me that the same thing people, the the same iconic figures keep showing up right in little ways and comments and this and that. And I was i was thinking, um i wonder if the reason that he did this spot on this episode was because of whenever they were talking about Planet of the Apes and all of that and him two seasons ago. Right. you know Yeah, it's got to be a reason he he decided to have this cameo.

Speaker: of Right, absolutely. And so I just thought that was interesting and because you know he is, he or he was, excuse me, he did he passed away in 2008. But he was a huge, huge star Ben-Hur, in...

Speaker: And Planet of the Apes. And numerous other things. He was in like over a hundred different wow movies. and um Like action movies. And he was Ten Commandments. Soylent Green. And see, because we've talked about Soylent Green also.

Speaker: Yes. um And I'm trying to remember why that came up. Yeah, it rings a bell because i did I don't know. There was a random line. There was a random line and it was a a um a direct to Soylent Green. But like you would have to deep dive and know these random facts in order to have seen it. But he was also in that.

Speaker: Right. Yeah, he's one of these people that I just, don you know, I couldn't really name his movies, but you know who Charlton Heston is and the legend that is. Right. Because he's just, i think he's, yeah, I mean, he acted for decades upon decades.

Speaker: um yes yeah so joey understandably very excited to get to have a little part in a movie with charlton heston uh chandler comes out but he's still in his sweats and uh somebody's a moniker that says you know maybe you shouldn't leave him to go on this fishing trip and but joey's dismisses that because chandler's still in phase one he's still with the sweatpants nothing can be done at this point he's not he's not ready to move forward Yes, but don't worry. I'll be back before phase two. Yeah, he's a big fan. Big fan of phase two. Yes, don't forget about phase two.

Speaker: We nip on over to Bloomingdale's. Joshua is back after just a week. um He needs some, leather I think it's leather, brown or brown leather dress gloves. Very specific. i can't remember why he needs those. He doesn't say. And that's, I was trying to figure out why would one need those?

Speaker: Like driving gloves. We've talked about driving gloves before. ah And do you own gloves, Al? Or anything other than snow?

Speaker: Let's see. I own gloves specifically. I say specifically. I bought them for riding my bike because I ride my bike to work and it's cold sometimes. So, you know, ones that are f flexiblex you know kind of flexible and they're kind of leather. so that I mean, they're very thin. Okay. So just so that I've still got some protection but movement. Okay. But I did actually buy, like, these hand warmer things. Okay.

Speaker: that go over the handlebars that you just slide your hands in and then you've got no gloves on free motion but then it's all warm and stuff you around your um around your hand and up up your wrist a bit so no i've just got what happens if you fall off your bike while you have your hands in there so they're not like tied in like you can just pull them in and out so you you would just fly you know fla yeah they're because they're attached to the handlebars not to your wrists and your hands they're just going to slide in and yeah yeah i'm sure they've got that's cool yeah they will have a proper name i forget what the name is um yes but yeah no i think i've probably got handlebars doohickeys

Speaker: You know what I think we might call them. I'm willing to go with handlebar Jiminy jingles. I think we should go with. Good. Perfect. Yes. Perfect. No, i think i I think I've probably owned one pair of like thinner gloves and then one pair of like really warm gloves.

Speaker: ah I think that's probably about it. But no fancy gloves. I don't think so. i don't yeah now now to no No need for those. But Joshua needs them for whatever is he's doing. For whatever reason. I wonder if people though that live up north and are fancy, you know they have like dressy gloves. Fancy clubs gloves because they wear gloves a lot.

Speaker: I would assume so. Yeah, if you're in that kind of- It does not appear winter at all though, because man, Rachel's wearing teeny tiny skirts. That's a very good point. um Yeah, I don't know, but he's he's clearly in the market. And then Mr. Waltham comes in and asks Rachel to take his niece who's in town. i was going to ask you where Rachel's actually from, because he says London, and then but I thought that might be a little niche.

Speaker: Yeah, it was something shyer, right? It was Shropshire, yes. Okay. Yeah. I had to take her to Der Fliedermaus, which I just looked up and, you know, yeah, it's a real thing. But then I i didn't look any farther, to be honest.

Speaker: Okay. you want to know about it? I would love to know about it. Okay. It means German for the bat. and ah And sometimes it's known as the Revenge of the Bat.

Speaker: And it was originally produced 1874. I would know. 1851, 1874, 1874.

Speaker: i would know eighteen fifty one eighteen seventy four hey A long time ago. Yes. Yes. yes ah yeah and so This is 100 years ago that this came. and then It ended up turning into a silent movie in 1926. It was about... i don't even know.

Speaker: it was but It was not a big long one. It was a short operetta.

Speaker: Interesting. Yeah, I would have bet good money that the flitter mouse meant like the field mouse or something. but Yeah, right. That's what I was thinking too. And I was like, the bat, that's weird. and that But now it is, and you know how he talked about how two of the three tenors But now it is sung mostly by baritone, not tenor. Not the tenors.

Speaker: Now I'm curious, actually, now fliedermaus means like flying mouse, like translated. Yeah, and that's what they call a bat. Now I'm just going to have to Google that.

Speaker: Well, and it it has to do with a ball. Okay. that is The girlfriend or the wife or whatever, she's supposed to be going to um jail. But they have postponed it for a day to go to this ball.

Speaker: So it's like her or their you know final party night. Right. Because I guess that's how that works. I've never been to the prison. I don't know. Hey, me either. Oh, weird. Look at us. Yeah.

Speaker: us um But Yeah, so then there you go. And then they get in a fight, and then they make up, and then that's how it ends.

Speaker: And that's it. Well, Rachel, she says she's going to go to it, but then quickly forgets about that when Joshua invites her to an opening of a club he is invested in. She's going to be on the VIP list and just needs to look out um for him. But then Rachel realizes when Mr. Waltham comes back out that she or she forgot that she's already committed. to the opera.

Speaker: um we go over to the girl's apartment Chandler's throwing cards I did write that into a grey bowl because I did think you might ask me what he's throwing cards into he's still sad he's down in the dumps Joey comes in this is obviously a couple of days later and comes in from his his fishing trip and he is disgusting and he's stinking the apartment out at this point which how you manage to do that even if you're fishing on the lake how do you manage to oh yeah Really?

Speaker: Oh, ow. Like one morning out on the lake catching fish, you come home and you put your clothes in the wash and you take a shower immediately. See, this is good to know. Days on the lake, pew, you get smelling dead fish and nasty.

Speaker: See, I'm not really a bold guy. yeah And he's got the stubble and everything. yeah He's filthy and stinky and no doubt. But I can't believe he fell asleep stinking like that. Right. His pure bed sheets.

Speaker: Right. Because especially if if like that smell... all See, and I remember whenever I was a kid and my dad would go like on fishing trips with, and he would come home and, oh.

Speaker: Like, age music it's ah it's ah it's just, it's a stinky dead fish smell. And it's terrible. All right. See, i'm terrible I've, you know gone fishing for an afternoon, not ever really on a boat. I mean, once or twice in my life, been fishing on a boat, but usually it's just from the pier. It's from that. Yeah.

Speaker: Perhaps I've gone out on a kayak and fished a little bit, but not. and I've not immersed myself into, I think, but you know, if you're on a boat for a day, that's a whole different thing.

Speaker: Yeah, yeah. But then in he's gone for days. Right. sits It's press pretty rough. Pretty, pretty rough. But he's going to go work on his lines, prep for the next day where he's going to meet Charlton Heston. And Rachel comes in with her dilemma about the club opening and the opera and what to do in this situation. ah i think I think Monica says she can't help because she has to work. Is she still Alessandro's at this point?

Speaker: Do we know? Yeah, I guess so so yeah that i would guess so. Yeah, because she just goes through the whole show up and down. I think that's kind of the life of a chef, a little bit of employment and unemployment. But I was thinking she was still at Alessandro's. Yeah, because the last time that we saw, um you know, everybody, she had gotten on to everybody, kind of gone into her own. the assumption would be that she's still there.

Speaker: Yeah, that was definitely my assumption. Rachel realizes she has to ask Ross to help. She's like, oh, I think we thought we'd moved on. Can we be happy for each other? um Ross agrees, and then Emily shows up.

Speaker: The introduction of... I wouldn't say she's a disliked character, the storyline is disliked. And I think people don't like her at the end with how she treats Ross, whether it's right or wrong. i don't know. think she's a controversial character, whether people like her or not. But we get to meet Emily in this scene.

Speaker: Yes. Well, yeah. And the the first time you meet her, she's a big jerk. she She is kind of a jerk. Like, even if all those things have happened, which I'm sure they did, that's nothing to do. you like I don't know.

Speaker: be thee Be nice. um Right. Yeah. and At least give Rachel a chance because, yeah, Rachel is backing out of the plans. But she's coming up with a plan B. I don't know. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm with you. She's she's not very nice here.

Speaker: um And come to think of it, if she hadn't left the apartment all day, You know, she got she had trouble at the airport. and the I don't know. She got run down by one of your wiener cars. Indeed. Indeed. Yeah, she got strip searched. and Yeah, all these things. I can't quite figure out. I couldn't interpret this line. When she leaves and then Ross says, like, please hurry.

Speaker: If he A, thinks she's really cute or if he's B, being sarcastic. he does He's like, oh. Oh, I... I thought I totally took that as sarcasm. That's okay. That's the way I was leaning, but I wasn't sure. Okay. So that good.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. um Yeah. She's had a rough trip, but she walks out and then Rachel kind of goes to catch up with her and try and make things better. we We're still in the girls' apartment. Phoebe thinks the baby's kicked, but it was just the elastic in her underwear that's broken. It's such a funny, just a silly sort throwaway gag, but it's... Yeah, but funny.

Speaker: Yeah, very, very funny. Then Joey bursts out of his bedroom. He's overslept. He hasn't showered. he doesn't have time to shower. He's already late for the set. um Don't remember quite how late. I think he says, don't remember it was two hours late, but he is in a panic and races out the door, even though he still stinks of a bait stand and dead fish. yeah yeah sure yeah terrible rachel comes in at that moment because she what doesn't she can tell you like nope just keep going just keep going yeah yeah runs past um rachel went to the club opening um yeah as you brought up a little bit in bamboozled she had some issues there was no rachel green on the vip list but there was a rachel greep

Speaker: um who somebody else claimed was her and they went in and then the lady tried to steal her umbrella so Rachel punched her in the face seems a little un-Rachel like to me yeah it does to do that yeah yeah that's definitely not her yeah something that she would typically do I am all for the Rachel, you know, she's coming into her own and standing up for herself and all these wonderful, positive things. I don't think that, that her punching somebody in the face for taking her umbrella is something she would do.

Speaker: No, no. Seems out of character and the way she kind of casually says I clocked her. Um, thank you yeah, not over an umbrella. I don't think, um,

Speaker: A weird joke for me here where basically Phoebe starts stroking her hair and calls her Phoebs because she thought that that's just what they called each other. I'm like, come on, Phoebe. right Yeah. No, that was so cute, though. I thought that was so sweet. I was like, oh my goodness. Oh, Phoebs. Yeah.

Speaker: And then right there, that's whenever our Chandler comes out and he's got pants on. He does. We think he has no sweats, but we find out he is layered for such a occasion. You're right. He comes out. He's got kind of khakis of something on. He's ready for the breakfast buffet at the strip club.

Speaker: um Yes. He's ready to go. And the last note I scribbled for this scene was that Ross calls and he's in a bed and breakfast in Vermont. Again, we got to suspend reality for a minute because how they would end up in a bed of breakfast having about to go to the you know the ah the opera, which we assume is in the evening and all of that. How they would suddenly get to Vermont.

Speaker: But we won't worry about that. At bed of breakfast. Yes. And then Rachel's like, who the heck? And then she realizes who Emily is. is Yes. Yes. Yes.

Speaker: yes yes yeah And it especially gets considering the last relationship that she set somebody and not set somebody up, but one of her, somebody in that group.

Speaker: like with ah Joanne and Chandler. Yes. Like, no, like this, her work people and her home people don't need to mix. No, no, this is nothing good is going to come from this. Right. Yeah, Rachel's kind of, i don't know if she's upset, but she's, it's certainly bothersome to Rachel, this situation, that ah Ross and Emily are having a wonderful time. There's deer eating fruit in the orchard.

Speaker: Which they're very excited about. Just outside. Just outside. um So Rachel, I think she's acting jealous, but then says it's really more about Joshua. She's not really worried about Ross and Emily at all.

Speaker: um I can't quite really, what what happens that causes, I just wrote down that Chandler chandor has his sweats on underneath. I can't remember what causes him to take off the khakis and reveal the hidden sweats he has on.

Speaker: Well, because Ross is in Vermont and he was ready to go. That's right. He had nobody to go with. And is in Vermont, so he just takes his pants off.

Speaker: That's right. And that's right. And then the girls try to convince him that they should take him to the club. And he's like, no, it's just, it's not the same. It's... Yeah, he's got no no interest in that. But they want to be guys. That's right.

Speaker: We go over to Silver Cup Studios. Joey's late, but he's told by this this guy, whoever the guy is, that it's okay. um and the assess And the assistant lets Joey know that Heston's room is the only one with a shower. Is this a scene where we do see Charlton Heston eating the licorice whip?

Speaker: Yes. Yes. Yes. Yeah. yeah which that It's a cute thing. The way Joey kind of says, Charlton Heston, the licorice whip. Like it's just kind of cute.

Speaker: Yeah, absolutely. Where he's just like starstruck almost, you know. um I was going to ask you, what ah what does the sign say next to the room that Charlton Heston walked out of?

Speaker: It was blue sign. You know what? I remember there was a sign. Yeah, because it wasn't his dressing room that he walked out of.

Speaker: Oh, what did that say? ah You know, I don't know. I just remember there was a sign. I don't know. Yep, it was blue sign, like one of those placard signs, and it said, hair and makeup.

Speaker: Hair and makeup. No, I did not catch that. um So we end up going over to the strip club at this point. Really quite funny, like the acting to me between that just the girls and Chandler as we go back and forth here. So the girls have taken him, but he's just not in the mood. um Oh, but hang on. Oh yeah, what did miss? Before that happened, that's whenever he's trying to say that it's Charlton Heston that smells bad.

Speaker: Oh, that's right. Yeah. And the guy because that i was like, what is that smell? And he's like, oh um whoa, what is that?

Speaker: Charlton S? the guy's like, no, that's you. that That would be you, Joey. Without a doubt. I'd forgotten about that. Yes, that was so funny. Okay, sorry. i know I had made a note about that because I thought that was hilarious. that Never be sorry.

Speaker: Okay, are you ready for um an embarrassing question? Have you ever been somewhere e then realized that you stink?

Speaker: Let's think that it must have happened. I did realize the other day that the I got some deodorant and then i was like, this just doesn't work. Forever. Yeah. It's like I didn't put any on.

Speaker: That happened. And then Kate noticed it the other day. She was like, it just doesn't, it's not like you stink, but it's like, that just doesn't smell like anything. It doesn't smell like it works. There must have been...

Speaker: Yes, I do think about this sometimes. I think everybody does. You know, like everyone's house has a certain smell of some sort. Right. it was like right you You walk into your own house you're like, well, doesn't smell of anything.

Speaker: But like would I even know if it did? like Would I know if it really stunk? Is that not the scariest? Okay. right And so that that enter my biggest fear is being somewhere and realizing, oh my gosh, I stink. Like, oh,

Speaker: What is that smell? Oh, it's me. Oh my gosh. That's terrible. It's, but that is a huge fear of mine. See, I'm kind of, yeah, I was smelling your shirt. have I'm kind of lucky because I've, I've probably got an average to slightly below average, like what would you call it? No sensitivity.

Speaker: Kate, on the other hand, is like like a truffle hog. Like if there's scent anywhere in a quarter mile, she can identify it and knows what it is. So I know I will never leave the house not smelling clean and fresh because she would know it immediately.

Speaker: Yeah, she's very conscious or or sensitive to different smells. yeah So it's it's actually very useful to be married to somebody like that. Yes. Very practical. Yeah.

Speaker: I see. Sorry, I've complete ive just read a note I've forgotten about. Yeah. yeah What's that? Well, it's in the strip club. There's somebody in the background who makes a little appearance later on. It's just an extra.

Speaker: And he he does get a name in season five. Oh, is it the bald guy? It's not the bald guy. It is the actor who plays Mr. Zellner.

Speaker: It's just an extra in the background. Mr. Zellner, who's Rachel's boss at Ralph Lauren. Oh, wow. Yeah, like, pretty sure, pretty sure that's him in the background.

Speaker: Huh. Just as one of the patrons. Yeah, the bald guy, I kind of wanted to, to eat like, we never got to know his name, and, of course, he appears in the last scene. which is hysterical. Which is very funny. Chandler decides to kind of put a test out there. He tells the girls he wants to call Kathy, and I think they kind of say he should, and he's like, no, that was a test, and I'm going to get drunk and want to call Janice. Is that Or how does it go?

Speaker: Yeah, no. So he says, I'm going to call Kathy. And Phoebe's like, well, if you think you should. And he's like, no what that's a test because I need to know that you're going to tell me no. Yes, that's Because later I'm going to get drunk and want to call Janice. And they're like, oh, you should. How is she? Oh, no, no. No, that's not what he needs.

Speaker: No, yeah not how that should work at all. Although I wish you'd call Janice because then we'd get Janice back. But that's right. yeah Don't worry. She'll show back up. She will show up. No fear.

Speaker: We go over to Silver Cup Studios again. Joey's in Heston's shower and then Heston catches Joey in the shower. To me, it looked like a very clear body double, like not Matt LeBlanc in the shower when it's the back of his head. But of course, that could just be because his hair is different or something in the shower. But it looked like a different person. um no idea heston they have a conversation about joey stinking and he thinks it's a metaphor and all of this um but heston tells him to never bust into his room and use his shower he makes this abundantly clear this shall not happen again yes

Speaker: We go back over to the girls' apartment. They're back from the strip club. Chandler, it didn't work. He didn't have a good time. um Joshua's not called Rachel.

Speaker: And then the girls are trying to get Chandler to open up about his emotions and his feelings. And again, this is not what he needs at this moment in time. he Yeah. Yeah. Okay, i have I have a question there. Okay, you know how she calls him Joshua?

Speaker: jo Joshua, yes. And then they call him Josh. and She's like, no, it's Joshua. Yes. Oh, he doesn't like Josh? She goes, no, I don't. Right. So are you, like, do you have, like, ah I guess you do because you obviously have a nickname.

Speaker: Right. Because Al is not your given name. Right. Yeah. And I typically, like Joseph, it um everybody who grew up with him calls him Joey.

Speaker: that's I remember you mentioning that. you me, he's Joseph and will always be Joseph. Right. yeah be and And that's because that's his name. Right. But yeah, so I was going to ask you about that. But obviously, nicknames are a thing with you because that is...

Speaker: Well, and like' there's a- Does anybody call you Alistair? Yes. Alistair. So it's taken an interesting journey. So yeah not that anyone cares, but you've asked, so I'm going to share it with you. So growing up, was always it was always Alistair because it's a more common name in Scotland than it is here. you know So there was no reason to shorten it. When I moved here, I started going by Al. I mean, my niece, like my my niece, Rachel, um who was born when I was 11 12, no, 12, would call me Uncle Al because that's just easier.

Speaker: But people called me Al stuff. When I moved here, I thought, you know what, I'll just kind of go by Al because it's just easier. than Alistair. Call me Al. Everyone calls me Al.

Speaker: But when I started at the job where I currently am a year and a half ago, Can you believe that? Right? Time is flying.

Speaker: crazy That's nuts that started there that long ago. People called me Alistair because they would just see my name. a lot of the stuff wasn't done in person. It was email and Zoom. And I thought, you know what? it's i It's been a long time since people have regularly called me Alistair.

Speaker: and i just kind of let it go and some people at work call me al some call me alistair it just depends on really who it is so it it kind of goes it's more 50 50 at work okay yeah yeah and you've i mean there's dn and then people will call you d and then right being an education people will call you willison and that's right yeah that's absolutely right and again you know, growing up and everything, everybody, all my friends and family, I was D, D. Just always. Yeah.

Speaker: Always D. And then, then I grew up and then I was Deanne. Yeah. Yeah. it's there you go Yeah. I'm kind of split 50, 50 now. And how dare you call me d or Deanne around Kate, because she'll be like, that's weird.

Speaker: Yeah. It's not her name. It's Williston. It's Williston. Although she did she got such a chuckle, you sent her a thing. What was it? You got it was some kind of professional development or something. And they called, what did they call you? Like Williston or something? Oh, yeah. No, it's my...

Speaker: Yeah, that gave her quite the chuckle. My sticker. Oh, yeah. Well, and then whenever we worked together, there was the lady the lady that called me Woolish because she thought that that was my name.

Speaker: Nice. And so Haley will call me Woolish, and I have my little, like, my um yeah a ornament that she made me that is Woolish.

Speaker: ah Woolish? Yes. Because that's hilarious. But yeah, what is it? Like Willington, I think is what says. Something like that. it It gave a question. I do get my name spelled incorrectly all the time. I've had bank cards come in and my first name is Alabaster, which is my favorite one. Oh, cute. This is Alabaster Green. Alabaster Green. That's where the TV guide comes to. Mrs. Alapaster Green The name on my phone at work had two letters missing for a year until that I could finally get to fix it it happens all the time and that's just fine yeah

Speaker: Yeah. The girls start talking about finding the strippers attractive. And this is where I love this because Chandler starts like flipping out with excitement. He reaches. i was going to try and write down all the stages and lost track. But he's already to phase four.

Speaker: he's hes He flies through a couple of them. and i just I love Matthew Perry's acting here. um Oh, you know, we kind of as we keep recording, mentioning Matthew Perry, did you see Netflix is coming out with like a three part thing about his life?

Speaker: No, really? Yeah, I think it's at the end of September. It's called something like the one where we talk about Matthew or something. Oh, goodness. Okay. Yeah, so we need to keep an eye out for that. just saw that this week. That was coming out.

Speaker: and We got to Central Park, I think, at the first for the first time this episode. um Joey's so funny. he's He's all down in the dumps because he didn't get to go. Yeah, yeah they they went without him. Yeah, such a shame for Joey. He'd be a good wingman at stage two, I think. Oh, yeah.

Speaker: Ross comes in. He has had the most incredible, amazing time with Emily. And I do, I love this interaction with Rachel where they he kind of explains to them, you know, or, you know, Rachel, you were right. I didn't know if I was there yet, but he's so there now. And, ah Rachel is just trying to put on a bit of a brave face. she's ah She's not feeling this all. I assume there's jealousy bubbling away underneath. But he says he's finally where she is.

Speaker: Yeah, and and and no, that is not at all where she is. No, and I don't think she realized that she wasn't there either. um Yeah. Yeah, she's got some got some feelings at this moment in time. And I think we then end the episode, don't we? This is kind of Chandler's dream in the girls' apartment. There's lots of women, and then this guy that was smoking in the strip club is there, and he suddenly demands to be woken up.

Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. And that which was so funny. and then, yeah, that's Joshua. And she's like, this is not Joshua. I've never seen the guy. and that, yeah, that was so funny to me. i think yeah Yeah. it was ah It was a good, a good funny kind of different final scene. So I like you. I like that a lot. ah Who do you think was your Gunther Central Park for this week? Joey.

Speaker: Joey. yeah Just because he's so funny, right? um And i yeah, the scene with Charlton Heston makes me laugh. The fact that he's so gross.

Speaker: Right. Yeah. He's so gross. How do you sleep like that and then not like do anything? I don't know. That's just crazy. That's just crazy. You could have showered real fast and it could have like avoided the whole situation. you're all And the thing is, he had to shower and then he's still getting back into, I assume, his disgusting clothes.

Speaker: I mean, maybe grabbed a change of clothes. I don't know. But... No, because he grabbed his clothes and um and left in the towel. That's right. Yeah, so yeah, it's i like... oh yeah close a stink too Yeah, like... honey. Yeah, you're still going to smell.

Speaker: Yes. Okay. So what about you? So a little different, but I'm going with Ross this week. yeah i Because I thought he stepped up a little bit to help Rachel out with Emily, even when she wasn't acting very nice. He still was clearly willing to take her out.

Speaker: the The little line about the deer eating fruit in the orchard, i quite like the way he delivered that. And I just really like that interaction with Rachel at the end where he's trying to be all sincere. And she is like, you could see it in ah in her eyes that she is not enjoying this.

Speaker: So for me, nobody, you you really stood out. um Yeah. Too much. I thought about going with Chandler, but I just like these little bits of Ross in this episode. Yeah.

Speaker: Okay. Yeah. I feel like he's such a wiener. yeah He was the driver of the wiener cart. He probably was. How are we measuring this week's episode?

Speaker: In pairs of sweatpants. I think it has to be. i mean, yeah. Has to be. How many are you giving this one? Seven and a half.

Speaker: Seven and a half. Nice. Yeah. It was good. Better than average. Right. I have realized that like average is a solid Right. Like I, I'm in my own personal measuring my it's because friends is better than average.

Speaker: Right. So, mean, you know, there, I don't know that there's really any science to that, but you know, I try. I'm buying it. I'm buying I'm on board. I went slightly the other way, actually. I think my average is probably about seven and half. So actually gave it seven. I enjoyed it, but you know, i now that i think you're through, I'm like, yeah, there were some good bits, but I just have a quick look over some of my other episodes that and what I've given them just kind of quickly. And i think i'm I think I'm going to go with a seven.

Speaker: um Okay. Yeah, just a little. Sounds like a hater to me. Yeah, I'm feeling a little bad. Feeling a little bad about it. But, hey, it's got to be what's got to be.

Speaker: um Okay, yeah so just time times times for just a second. Of course. Silver Cup Studios. please tell me about Silver Cup.

Speaker: Okay, so it is in Long Island City in Queens. Okay. Okay, and it used to be a bakery building, but now it is the studios.

Speaker: Okay, and it was um founded in the 80s, and some of the most famous productions that they had there were The Sopranos.

Speaker: Sex in the City, Secession, 30 Rock, and Daredevil. So big stuff. Yeah. like And it's it's like series stuff, which makes sense because apparently you know what it the what I was able to piece together was that it was like a cop show that they were filming.

Speaker: Because, you know, you saw Charlton Heston with the two, with the holster and the guns. And then... Whenever um Joey is trying to explain to him, you know, I'm in a scene with you. I'm the cop who doesn't want to work with you because of your attitude or whatever.

Speaker: And so it's obviously like a, like a seer. I say obviously, but for me, that's what made sense since the majority of the stuff yeah I don't know. But that's what it seemed like. A fictional cops series that they were filming. And he was on ah he was an extra. and Or not an extra. But in a a small part in that series.

Speaker: Interesting. they were filming so and But anyway, I thought that was really cool. Yeah. And since they were filming it in California, it's kind of cool that they tied it to an actual production company that's housed like where it makes sense because if he was running 10 blocks, like it it had to be close.

Speaker: You know? Yeah, and it's interesting that... I wonder if Silver Cup and the Paramount lot ah are owned by, or the Warner Brothers rather, owned by the same, like you wouldn't think that one set and studio and all of that would want to show another real one unless they were connected somehow.

Speaker: Somehow, right? Somehow, yes. Yeah, well, and the the big thing that,

Speaker: Yeah, that that like, that's their connection is this episode. Right. Yeah, it's got to be so need to look into a little more why Charlton Heston, why Silver Cup Studios, you know, in this one episode, there's got to be a reason.

Speaker: We will. We will find out. We will find out. Yeah, we will. All right. Next week it is the one with ah with all the rugby. Red Ross. Yes. Yes. Excellent. Yes. Yes. I'm excited. We'll get to know Emily a little better.

Speaker: Ross is going to discover the greatness that is rugby. And yeah, I'm looking forward to any final thoughts this week. No, ah not really. No, think we've Yeah, think we've pretty much put you on the spot. yeah i'm Well, I'm not excited like about these next few episodes and everything. Now, the next season is my favorite season.

Speaker: But I'm not excited about these next little bits with um with Emily. I'm just not. Yeah, it's a controversial storyline, isn't it? And it's it's not one that I love at all. um Her exit from the show is kind of interesting, the way it was done. And it was done because um of Helen Baxendale in real life. um So we'll we'll certainly get into that. But yeah, it's not my favorite story arc um of all time, certainly, is the whole yeah Emily debacle. um

Speaker: But i'm I'm looking forward to watching Ross play rugby because that's I do think that bit's kind of fun. it's so It is. It is. Awesome. Yes. Anyway, no, I'm just i'm playing in AI trying to find out um And there's no specific reason other than they wanted to make sure that it was like something that was real.

Speaker: Because they're trying to make his um his acting seem real. Well, there you go.

Speaker: There you go. Well, it did the job because we're here thinking it must have been real. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, but fun fact, yeah you know how I was like, oh, you know, he said he had to run 10 blocks. So it makes sense because it's not that far. Like if it's there in Queens, like it's.

Speaker: But apparently that's um a joke. Right. Because he had to go, he had to cross an entire river. Gotcha. I learned something every time we record. Yeah. So that would be a goof.

Speaker: But anyway, but there you go. I mean, there are people across the country, maybe across the world that wouldn't know any better. You know, that makes sense. It's in New York. It's in New York. If they said 10 blocks, maybe that is. Exactly. Exactly.

Speaker: Well, there you go. Well, I just learned something new. We will be back next week. The one with all the rugby. um And yeah, I'm looking forward to it. All right. We will be back next week. The one with all the rugby. And thank you everybody for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
