Speaker: Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside, as always, Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening?
Speaker: I'm doing great. I'm excited to talk about this episode. Yes. Yeah. yeah this is this Yeah. This is a good one. it's and As we just said, I forgot how good this one was, so I'm excited.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I will say before, because I will forget, I made a quick post on Facebook a few hours ago, and we had the brilliant little name brilliantly named Michael Scott, a gentleman called Mark Poston, and Preston Fitzgerald all comment that they love this episode.
Speaker: Preston was saying it's of his favorites. So thank you guys for you know leaving little comments and hearts and all of that stuff. Yes. Because I agree, this one is so good. It is, of course, the one with all the rugby. That's what we are going to be talking about today.
Speaker: Okay. And in a perfect world, I would have way more knowledge of rugby. And if I didn't, I would have learned about it. But I'm excited because I know that you have a lot of knowledge about rugby.
Speaker: I know a bit. I do. I know i know a bit i know and enough. Just about. Okay. Okay. Yes. So whenever we get to it and we start talking about it, um I'm excited to hear because I only know a little bits and most of it is because my brother plays.
Speaker: That's actually the only reason I know any of it. I forgot. That's right. He does play. I forgot about that. He's so crazy. I've got and a friend whose ex-husband played. And I sound um i always wondered if they ended up playing together years ago. I don't know quite the timeline, but played for local rugby team.
Speaker: Okay. And he's played for that team for a long time. Yeah. Because he played and then he stopped because he didn't have insurance and we were all stressed out. And then he's been playing again. I'm sorry, but these things that you have to worry about um as an adult, you know, and then my brother, sometimes we have to remind him you need to worry about that.
Speaker: Yeah. If you're going to play rugby in the United States, health insurance, it's a good idea. Good idea, for sure. Especially the older you get and the more, you know, less bouncy you are. Yeah, think things tend to hurt a little more as we get older, without a doubt.
Speaker: well Well, we should, I'm quite looking forward to bamboozled because I ended up with a bunch of questions. We only had one the same and it was i know our second question for both of us, which I thought was kind of fun.
Speaker: that is interesting right yeah i'm super curious because that was mine i don't have a whole bunch i've only got seven but that i had three extras so yeah fantastic felt like that was a lot no i want to know how many you have i think i have one two three four five six i have oh i have eight i had nine have eight okay it's a lot Fantastic. Who is going first today in bamboozled? um So it is odd. So it is I. Wonderful. That would be me. Yes. All right, Al.
Speaker: Yes. What color is the nail that Rachel finds in the nail shop? Oh, that's a good question. I would hate to know what she was scratching. With this thing, yes. I think I'm just going to have to go like a bright red. Yeah. Yeah, okay, good. And that is a great, great guess. Because I think I would have noticed if it wasn't red, because stereotypically in my head, nails are red. And I think I would have noticed it being different. All right, my first question for you.
Speaker: What three characteristics of Janice does Chandler say he that they really annoy him? Oh, her laugh? Yep. Oh, wait. Her voice, her laugh, and her personality. Ding, ding, ding. Yes. All right. In the boys' girls' apartment, right? What does the Etch-A-Sketch say?
Speaker: Oh, it's in my notes. Oh, no. It says it's something about the nails, like nice nails. It's it's nice nails.
Speaker: Chandler, nice nails. Yes, that's all. Okay, good. Nice. oh Good job. wo With one little flick of the mouse, I could have seen it. But no, we don't do that here.
Speaker: so No. No. No. All right. Excellent. I'm glad. Because I watched it and I remember thinking there was no Etch-A-Sketch last week for some reason. So I went back to see if it was there. Yes, there's not.
Speaker: Was it last week or the week? Because we've looked, I was going to say, because we've seen messages on their board since the boys have been over there. That's right. That's right. Maybe it was more than that. A few, I just remember there was one episode where it wasn't there. So now I try to look for it deliberately.
Speaker: Trying to see. All right. My second question for you. What song did Janice sing when she and Chandler went out for a date? the Chandler says, well, actually they paid... whoever it was, to sing it.
Speaker: It's three words. I know, i know. oh God. Deanne has her hand in her hands. Because I can i can see the scene.
Speaker: Because it everybody was, because she was singing something. And then they said um ah something. And then they're like, well, we paid $40 to hear blah, blah.
Speaker: Yes. think This is driving you crazy. It's on the tip of your tongue. I can see it.
Speaker: And it's, this oh God, I don't know. Oh no. and I was trying to think of a hint to steer you, but there's really not. It just says what it is.
Speaker: It is Old Man River. Yeah, it is. Yeah. Oh gosh. Yeah, no, you gave me a hint with the three words. All right, well, this one is equally as random, and you either know it or you don't. All right.
Speaker: All right, what movie was Ross going to see whenever Red Ross made his first appearance? That's a great question, and again, like you, I know the scene...
Speaker: i'm just gonna You remember Red Ross. We were in line for. oh Which is so lame because you're like, really? I'm just.
Speaker: I saw it like a hundred times. I think this movie ninety came out before this. So it was just because it's Ross Jurassic Park.
Speaker: Oh, that's a nice guess. But and No. Oh dear, what was it? Dances with wolves dance the was Wolves. Yeah, he wouldn't go and see Jurassic Park out of principle.
Speaker: no no I believe that. Or he would have seen it once and then been like, absolutely not. indeed you would Or read the book. Maybe read the book. Yeah, definitely.
Speaker: ah My third question for you. What is the name of the nail salon where Chandler and Rachel bump into Janice? Oh! We see it outside. Is it the nails on 23rd?
Speaker: it's not. Is it that same vibe? It's got a number. I'll tell you this. It's the something street nails. And it's a number. third
Speaker: 13th. No. Would you believe it's 14th? no ah yeah because i remember whenever she says it and because she says it too yes she did i think you could see it but i wasn't sure enough to and then jenna says it yeah yeah oh all right but well then how many outlets did monica test
Speaker: Oh, that's a good question. So two, I think I can picture three, so I'm going to guess four. Well, that is an excellent guess.
Speaker: it's I got it. All right. Yes, you did. oh yes. Because I can think of three and I was like, bet I'm missing one. Fantastic. All right.
Speaker: Can you, this question for, can you name four of the five places Janice guesses that Chandler should transferred to? yes, can. Yeah, you can. Oh, Bangkok. Oh, and then she starts naming places in Italy.
Speaker: Okay. Barcelona. You've got Paris and Barcelona. Yep. Paris and Barcelona. Yeah, Barcelona. Venice. Yep. You got three out five. you just did four. um Because it was... ah
Speaker: Rome? So I think... Yeah, I think... Did you say Rome... No, because I said Paris, Venice. Oh, maybe I did say Rome. Oh, no. So I'm going to give it to you. It's not Venice, but it's another city that starts with the same, at least the same letter. And it's kind of similar.
Speaker: it's it's It's in Austria. It sort of sounds... Not Venice. Okay, wait. Venice is the one with the guys with the boat. It is indeed.
Speaker: Yeah. She doesn't say that? No. No, but she does she says one that sounds like it. Oh, you can't give that to me then. um Paris. In Austria.
Speaker: rome yeah um in austria it starts with the same letter.
Speaker: ah Okay, but now i'm hung up on that. But she said five. So she goes Paris, Florence. Not Florence. Let's see. yeah mean yet Rome. So you've got Paris. I think you said Paris, Barcelona, Rome. You've got the V1 and then another city that is huge in the Friends universe.
Speaker: That is huge in London. there You got four out five. Okay, what was the V? That was Vienna. Vienna. Vienna. Yes. Oh, gosh. Yes. And I sure did hear her say that. And then I thought Vienna sausages. And then I was like Venice.
Speaker: Right. And that's what I remember. thing Venice sausages. Not quite such a delicacy. No, not a thing. Not a thing. All right. right What is Chandler's flight number to Yemen?
Speaker: Oh, it's in my notes. It's in my notes. The only thing I feel confident in that very loosely confident is one of the numbers. I'm going to go with 74. Wow.
Speaker: wow There are three numbers. this there Okay. I thought there was a seven, but yeah I could be making that up. Seven, four, zero. No, seven, four, three. Two the numbers are the same.
Speaker: Okay, well, it can't be 747, I wouldn't think. So I assume... There's no seven. There's no seven. All right. One final guess, just for fun. 423. Al, I just told you two of the numbers are the same. Oh, you did indeed. 424. done. I'm out. 664.
Speaker: four twenty four i've done i'm out ah six six four 6-6-4, and I was miles away. All right. You get this one. We have tied it up at three each. So, what sport was Ross playing with Rachel's dad when he got hurt?
Speaker: Badminton. Badminton for the tie. Look at you go. Wow. I thought that one might be tricky because she didn't shouldn't mumble it, but it was kind of an off-the-cuff comment. Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, but it was so funny because he's such a wiener. he yeah He is. All right, let's see. You've got two extra questions. I've got three, so I'll go first. What two colors are Ross's rugby jersey?
Speaker: Blue. And... Is it yellow or white? It is yellow indeed. Trust it you got. Blue and yellow. Yes. Awesome. All right. So what's Chandler's job in Yemen?
Speaker: He says he'll be back. As soon as they find...
Speaker: As soon as they find, i don't know why it's in my head because I know this is Joey when he's in the play and the ladder comes down, but I keep wanting something about fuel and alternative fuel source, even though I know that's another episode in another character. but that is correct. Is that correct? Okay. They really like the alternative source. The alternative fuel source. Excellent. All right. You asked me about the flight number. What airline is Chandler flying out on?
Speaker: just in big letters it is not you know it's a made-up airline oh is it yemen airways you get half of half a fictitious point it's yemen express right excellent are you sure that's a fake airline you know what i'm gonna double check as as soon as i said that i was like i well i've never heard of it but i haven't flown to yemen to be honest All right. That's true. Me too. All right. How many so ah significant shocks did Monica get in her whole trying to find the light switch situation?
Speaker: That's a great question. i have no idea. I want to think it's going to be something silly. I'm going with 16. oh good guess. But no, ah way too high.
Speaker: Oh, well. i One more guess at at six. Seven. Seven. Six, seven. The educators in this, you can't get away from it as everyone rolls their eyes as they drive to work and listen. Whatever. That's right. We'll just embrace it. My final question for you. Who lives below the boys' apartment?
Speaker: Oh, it's Mrs. Something Weird. it correct on both counts yeah um uh mrs domar you were almost there not really mrs gattrakis Oh, there you go.
Speaker: Uh-huh. Yep. I was right there. I was in the right half of the alphabet. That's what I'm thinking. Again, if this was actually bamboozled, that would be half a point, I think. No, it would not. Right half of the alphabet. I don't know. You know, I've got one other quick announcement, but I've forgotten their names. i need to see if I can look it up. We had another podcast reach out to us, and I'm just going to throw it out now because I'll forget at the end. And they review just nostalgic episodes of all kinds of TV shows. They've done some on Friends. Oh, that's fun. They've reached out because they love what we're doing, and I've listened to one of their episodes, and it's different from ours. They're just looking at a group of episodes at a time and kind of talking about... things um it's the the we run on reruns podcast i'm ashamed to say i've forgotten their names they're a brother and sister but a shout out to them because we had a really nice message exchange back and forth with we run on reruns so after you've listened to us if you need a another podcast for your drive home or whatever it is you're doing i would check them out because they are nice and nice people
Speaker: We run on reruns. We run on reruns. I just looked them up on Spotify and I am following There go. I know they they said they've done a lot of Friends, The Big Bang Theory, and Stranger Things, which I think is speaking to your heart. but strange It is. Yeah. That's I'm looking at right here.
Speaker: and The one where Ross is Indiana Jones. Yeah, there's that there's some good stuff. I'm excited to dig into their their back catalogue now that I've discovered them. And thank you again to them for reaching out. All right, this week's episode, the one with all the rugby, I like it when we're in a new set and we're starting in the nail salon. Rachel and Chandler, they've gone to get their nails done.
Speaker: um Rachel ah evidently promised that ah there'd be other guys there and it's the only other guy there is the mailman. Are you somebody who goes to get their nails done? I used to be. i always feel better whenever I am.
Speaker: But just money-wise, i that is not a luxury I can keep up with right now. i I think Kate would probably say the same thing. And also, if she has a free afternoon to go and get her nails done, she'd rather just stay home and do things rather than worrying about her nails.
Speaker: um Yeah. Yeah. sort of thing. I think if she goes, it's more of a social thing. She'll go with one of the kids or something. Yeah. Yeah. So it's not a not a big thing in our house. But yeah, they see not just any old mailman, but Chandler says it's it's their mailman. And as you brought up in Bamboozled, Rachel sits on ah on a bright red nail. And then you know who used to wear nails like that?
Speaker: yeah Oh my God. Janice is back. Yeah, she is. Yes, good old Janice. I love it. We go up to the boys' apartment. Now, temporarily, Rachel and Monica's. There's a random switch that is driving Monica crazy because she doesn't know what it does. And I'm kind of in the Joey camp here. I think Kate would be more in Monica's. if he It just doesn't do anything. And I would let it go. go
Speaker: yeah No. i There's no way. There's no way. Especially if i live there. Like, and I'm not going to lie, even if I don't live there, but there's a light switch and I can't figure out what it does. That bothers me.
Speaker: That really does. Has it ever is is it happened in your life? I was curious if this kind of situation, you know, and not necessarily a light switch, but, you know, maybe there's something in your house or a house you have lived in that you just, you know, you you had had questions with no answers.
Speaker: So no, but I will tell you about something that really bothers me. i would love hear And it's about this house that I'm living in right now. Tell me. Okay, in the living room, right? So like you walk in, there's like a little entryway and then there's the kitchen.
Speaker: And then there's like the big old living room. And there's a light switch right there between the kitchen and the living room. But then there is also a light switch between the entryway and the living room. And then there is a light switch over by the door, by the back door. right Okay.
Speaker: So the fan and the light switch are attached to the living room, the the ones over by the back door. Then the light switch that is in the entryway hall, the light switch on the right does the light over here. But then the light switch on the left does the light out in the living room.
Speaker: Okay. Then the light switch 10 feet, maybe, from there in the kitchen is attached to the living room light.
Speaker: So there are three light switches all to that one light. And it really bothers me because you can get them off to where it looks like it's on, but it's really off. And then if you flip it, then it's backwards. And it all is stupid.
Speaker: that would that I'm kind of with you. that That might give me kind of a low-key rage. Yeah, it's like, don't touch that one. Right. You can only turn that light on and off with this switch.
Speaker: Right. yeah Right. And one of my students had given me this really cool like Star Wars and it had like light side and dark side. And it says like light side at the top and dark side at the bottom. And it would drive me insane whenever it would get off.
Speaker: And then it's like right the lights are off, but it says light side. Can't have it. Can't do it. Nope. Oh my gosh, what ah I'm a little Monica only. Very dorky version of Monica.
Speaker: We are peeling back the layers of wool. Like an onion. an onion. Peel the onion. ah Okay, now we talked about this. Have you gone and gotten like your pedicure, your medicure before?
Speaker: So I've gone... twice maybe three times in my life and had my feet done i've gone with kate i don't enjoy it i don't find it relaxing it's nothing to do with like if i enjoyed it i'd go i've got guy friends who go and get it done and they love it i don't let people messy with my feet and all of that like yeah yeah not not a fan Because they know what they're doing. So they will use their their nail files and things ridiculously fast.
Speaker: They know what they're doing. But i'm always I always carry that fear with me that they're going to rip my nail off or something, which is irrational and wrong. But I can't i just can't relax. So it's not for me, but ah more power to it if it's your thing. all for it I just quickly Googled it. It's Amanda and Eric. They they are the 40-something siblings, as their bio says, who run We Run on reruns. um But, yeah, had a funny feeling you might have a switch in your house or something that would yeah would would drive you crazy. We've got two out. We've got...
Speaker: So the previous owner did a lot of the work to our house himself. I would say it's a passing grade, but there are certain outlets, like if I need, if I want to plug something in, in the garage and there'd be power in the socket, I have to have the light on.
Speaker: Like it's all kind of rigged. Oh, yeah. You know, that kind of thing. There's a few things, which is not, I'm used to it. It's not a big deal. Two outlets, you know, they we have a plug outlet in what a hallway. You have to have the light on for it to work.
Speaker: A few things like that. Not a big deal. Not a big deal. Okay. so we're up in their apartment Chandler walks in with Janice she is divorced she is on the alimony pony which I just love that line the alimony pony is great she and Chandler appear that they're certainly back together at this point until she leaves and shuts the door and I think he's like can't stand the woman as soon as door shuts um and this is where he lists off some annoying habits but she's picked up like nine more
Speaker: How can you not love Janice? I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. Just outstanding character. We go out to the street. Ross and Emily, they're walking along. Emily's heard stories about how dangerous New York is, which I think that the heyday for danger in Manhattan was in the 80s. And I think in the 90s, it really cleaned up. I've been a handful of times and it's a wild and crazy place, but I've never felt Never felt scared. Yeah, it's um yeah always been just a fantastic place to visit. But then suddenly two guys run towards them and pick Emily up. Ross starts shouting for help. And then ah think she real or she knows immediately who they are.
Speaker: i've written that i was devin and liam because that was our that was our our question question in common yep yes devin less on her to u2 concert liam the next morning which makes ross feel a certain kind of way have any feelings on you two i don't particularly care Yeah, okay. i i I don't dislike them. and so I just don't get the hype.
Speaker: To me, they're an absolutely average group. Don't listen to them. but I don't hate them or anything. But oh it just I've never understood why they are this you know blockbuster worldwide sensation. Don't quite get it.
Speaker: um But Liam, they invite Ross. They're playing rugby tomorrow at Riverside Park, which is a real park in Upper Manhattan on the Upper West Side. i had a quick look at 2pm.
Speaker: Ross seems he seems keen to play. He wants to show Emily what he's made of. Well, yeah, especially since it's so stupid, right? Okay, so number one, it's crazy to me that those guys just ran up and like picked her up and ran off with her.
Speaker: Right. that his response was, help, help! Right. You need to be the help at that moment in time. Like, that entire scene was just so dumb.
Speaker: And then how random is it that these guys that
Speaker: yeah Yeah, I couldn't figure that out. So did did Emily know they were in the States, but they hadn't seen each other? And then they just see her. Yeah.
Speaker: Because she says, like, I've been meaning to ring you. and so it's like, really? What? What is happening? I'm very confused. And then also that guy who's like the next morning and he puts his arm around her like what a creep. Yeah, well not a good move when she's clearly you could you could hazard a Ross's boyfriend or a date.
Speaker: You know, it's not a sibling. You know, it's yeah kind of creepy move. Kind of kind of with you. um But apparently she has a tight, so. That's it. Okay, anyway. Well, we go over to Central Park. Janice and Chandler are talking about where they went for their date. Janice, as I said, in Bamboozle was singing Old Man River.
Speaker: um But Chandler reminded the people, that's right, people paid the actors to do it. um Chandler's going to try and break it off with Janice. The bane of his existence is trying to break up with her.
Speaker: He doesn't want to get involved too soon. He just broke up with Kathy. um And she's like, but I'm just divorced. I'm getting a marriage. It's meant to be. And then he panics and says he is relocating to Yemen. And this is one of the most iconic Chandler lines we get to.
Speaker: the whole Yemen storyline is so small, but it's iconic for Chandler. Yes. Well, and it's so it's so Chandler, right? yeah Because it's like something has gone wrong.
Speaker: And so what can I do that will make it hysterical and 50 times worse Absolutely. Because like trapped in a baked vegetable with oh my god why did I just lose her name?
Speaker: Jill Guttaker. Yes! Jill Guttaker! Give the phone to Joey. Yeah. it's He always when he has to admit get in this tough situation goes completely unhinged and off the deep end. Yes. Yes. And like Yemen what in the world? And then what a nut job she is.
Speaker: Right. I love it. It's so good. It did occur to me when I was watching this. I know very little about Yemen. I know roughly where it is on the map. Roughly.
Speaker: But that was about it. It's much bigger than I thought. I thought it was one of like the tiny little the Gulf states like Qatar. yeah it's a big It's the size of California and Pennsylvania combined. It's a big...
Speaker: Big land area. 34.7 million people. It's a very poor country, poor human rights, poor money-wise. you know But do they listen to our podcast?
Speaker: You know what? That's a great question. i will have to have a quick look. Yeah. you know I'm just saying. Wow. That would be kind of cool if we had a listener in Yemen. I'm not going to lie.
Speaker: Yeah. you we We are fairly international these days. Yeah, we are. Yeah. I didn i did count them. or i I tell why. I chat GPT to account of how many countries our show had been listened to in.
Speaker: Let's see. Is in? No, we are all around though. Syria, Egypt. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, but not Yemen. Everything else right around it. We're going to have Listeners out there, if you know somebody who lives in Yemen, just download it once. that's that would do it's Just once. Just once. We're trying to cover the map.
Speaker: That's right. Have us Yemen. Maybe, yes. Let's go for Yemen. Yes, that would be fantastic. OK, so yes yeah what else did you learn about Yemen? I feel like you're you're about to share something interesting, and then I started rambling. No, not terribly, because unfortunately, most of the things about are fairly negative, and we don't want to keep a positive light. About 75% of the people there receive humanitarian aid It's just a very poor country, but it's huge it's just so much bigger than I realized. I wonder why, because they're right next to Saudi Arabia, right?
Speaker: yes Yeah, I mean, there's some very rich places around Saudi Arabia, Oman. I wonder the UAE and all that, right, is over there?
Speaker: Yeah, like I mean, they're they're they're all sort of in the same area. Okay. I mean, and being very, a big generalization there, but yeah, I mean, in that Gulf region.
Speaker: Okay. Did you see, okay, let me ask this. Did you see the new map? Have you heard about this? You know what? I was just thinking about that and whether we should talk about that. I forget because I forget that it's got a fancy name. Yeah, that is actually putting Africa at the proportionate size that it should always have been.
Speaker: Yeah, and it makes, ah like, everybody else so much smaller, right? Yeah. And it' I don't know. That's just wild to me. It's wild and it's cool. Yeah, it's like there's something, like, pe I get peeling back layers of the onion. I like it when things we've always thought are one way and we're kind of actually showing. Actually, it's not like that. And it's like, you know, we've always been Africa, massive.
Speaker: It's so much bigger than it appears on our on on the whatever it was called. These maps had names, but the the map that we were all used to. Yeah, it's pretty crazy. Okay, and then I just pulled up a map because I was curious if i wanted to see a map, if it would be the proportionate one or if it would be whatever. And I have no idea. All I know is like Greenland looks humongous on this map that came up.
Speaker: ah But is Australia not Australia anymore? What is Oceania? Oceania. So it get Australia is a funny thing, and I'm going to get some of the details wrong, because depending where you are in the world, Australia is still Australia. oceanic Oceania includes other surrounding countries.
Speaker: so it's it's um But then there's also... Like i grew up in, it was called Australasia, which is Australia and some, sore right. And that one always gets cake surrounding countries.
Speaker: So it's Australia is one of those funny things where it's a country, but then what do you call, if you throw in New Zealand and all the the the beautiful Pacific islands that are around there,
Speaker: Because I think they play in like the Asian games. So in some regards, it might be considered Asia, depending who you ask and what or really what the situation is. But that geographical region is Oceania. Somewhere out there, somebody much smarter than me, please get in touch and correct me. Because every time I think I fully understand it.
Speaker: i'm I'm always slightly off with with my understanding of how Australia, Oceania, Australia, how that all kind of relates. Man. Huh. Okay. Well, that was a fun little side quest, wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think of Oceania in the same, you know, as a con is, I think it just is the continent that is Australia, New Zealand, some of the islands, I'm sure like a Papua New Guinea and these other ones that are down there.
Speaker: I think that maybe I'm keeping that. Yeah. Yeah, i've just I've just Googled it and it's complicated. So I'm going to leave it there. because it's Okay. Otherwise we will get down into a huge deep dive of Australasia and Polynesia and how they fit into all of Oh, now Polynesia, like that's Hawaii is part of Polynesia.
Speaker: Exactly. But then it's also part of Oceania. And i get know is worse but maybe it's not North America, even though it's part of the United States, because of where it is geographically. So I think it's yeah it's complicated. We will have to dive into this.
Speaker: um Yes. Interesting. Yeah. Okay. Chandler doesn't know when he's leaving for Yemen, though, but he does know it's sometime tomorrow, which is just... Because... yeah My favorite... is My favorite, yeah.
Speaker: It's just like we have to spend all the time together. Well, i do know it's tomorrow. And it is. Joey, his response is, thanks for telling me. Right. It's so random.
Speaker: I have got a funny story to tell you off the air related to that because I don't want to embarrass anyone. Remind me when we're done. um Yeah, we're up in the boys' apartment. Monica and Phoebe, they've got a plan, a to figure out which switch does, you know, what the switch does. Oh, yeah, four outlets don't work. I actually had it written down. So she plugs in things that made noise, not light. She decided to go with noise.
Speaker: and then he flips the switch it's such a dumb joke but joey humming i just oh yeah i found that funnier than that i would have thought i would it's just it's such a joey move ah We go over to the girls' apartment and Ross is watching rugby. He's not even man enough to order the channel. So he's watching it over there with Joey and Chandler. Doesn't really see what the big deal is. He's like, oh, it's fine. like This is not not a rough game.
Speaker: ah Phoebe comes in. She wants to watch the news because it might be raining. Now... i felt I caught myself the other day and I was curious if you've done this.
Speaker: In our living room, especially in the summer, we keep the curtains closed because it just gets the the sun beats in our back door if we don't. So as soon as it's, you know, autumnal weather and it's 70 degrees outside, the back door and the windows are open all day.
Speaker: But right now, they say, it's kind of dark because we want to keep it cool. yeah i have caught myself, I just did this the last week, pulling out my phone and pulling up the weather app to see if it was raining outside.
Speaker: Oh. And I felt kind of guilty about it. I felt pretty bad. Yeah. No, I've not ever done that. I will always pull it up to check the temperature, though.
Speaker: And the feels like, always. Because I need to be prepared before I walk out if I am walking into a sauna. as yeah Which you can pretty much take as every Right now, right always. Right. yes right So, I don't know.
Speaker: Yeah, we've got one more week. I think one more week of the horrible temperatures. Okay, so here's the deal about that there. Uh-oh, uh-oh, don't bust this bubble.
Speaker: Oh, I'm going to. Prepare to have that bubble first. Haley said the exact same thing to me last night. She was talking to me while I was driving home. I said, but here's the deal.
Speaker: I said, my app, I always check to see what the temperature is. What's the temperature going to be for the next 10 days? Do we have any cool down or heat up depending on you know, like any change in the weather coming up?
Speaker: And I will tell you for the last two weeks, it has said 10 days, it's going to rain and go down into the eighty And was like, so that means for the last 30, 20 something days, it has said in 10 days.
Speaker: Don't worry, it's coming. 10 days. This is making me very sad, but I just pulled up my phone and it says the same thing. Yeah. Yes. But it's always 10 days out, 10 days out. And eventually it'll be right.
Speaker: Yep, like a broken clock twice a day and all of that. It will eventually be right. Well, i'm keeping my fingers crossed because I'm tired of this heat. um Chandler and Janice, they come in. She's got this massive roll of bubble wrap. She's going to help him pack. Okay. yeah So I was thinking through. I was like, why do they only have one box and this gigantic roll of the bubble wrap? Then I was like,
Speaker: They went and they bought that. And I wonder how much it costs to get a giant roll of bubble wrap. Like right he is This is like committing to the bit on a whole crazy level.
Speaker: Yeah. And you're also not in my head. He's got like suitcases. Wrap this, I'd wrap things in my clothes in the suitcase because that bubble wrap is going to take up a lot of space. But yeah, maybe he's packing something.
Speaker: I can't imagine what it would be that's fragile, but maybe some, but not that much bubble wrap. Yeah. I don't know, but it seems crazy. It's just, he is, he is ah committed to the bit.
Speaker: He is. Yeah. Joey thinks this is all a great, well, after Joey kind of says, thanks for telling me, he thinks it's a great idea because Yemen actually sounds like a real place. He he has got her fooled.
Speaker: um yeah Phoebe stuffs underwear in her shoes because it makes her look taller, which I think is just a great, a great. Random. Yeah. Random. Random thing.
Speaker: i used to i I used to stuff like my mom had little bitty stockings and I would stuff those in the toes of heels.
Speaker: Right. I liked the heel. Like I liked a few different pairs of heels, but they were too big. So I would stuff those down there to make them fit. So I wasn't walking out of my shoes all the time. Seems like but that a very smart thing. How would you stuff socks in your shoes and how would that make you taller?
Speaker: I don't know. Yeah. How the science of that would work. I could. Yeah, I'm with you. I'm not too sure. I guess it's under the heel, but then you're kind of coming out the shoe. I don't know.
Speaker: She'll she'll have a system. Ross is still watching the rugby. And Joey's like, you're going to get hurt. And Ross says he's really doing this to show Emily how tough he is. And Rachel means she's not wrong. He's the toughest paleontologist that she knows.
Speaker: ah I think that is without a doubt. So you said your brother your brother played or plays rugby? Plays. ah Plays. Plays. Yes, he does. And i don't know. Like, I can talk football with you. i can talk ah a little bit of soccer. I can talk a little bit basketball. I can talk all the baseball all day long. um I have been to quite a few rugby matches.
Speaker: I still do not understand the scoring and how that all works, but it's pretty obvious whenever somebody is getting spanked at that game. Right. so Obviously, i don't know how we ended up at these numbers, but I knew we were losing bad. Right. Yeah.
Speaker: Um, and but like whenever they were talking about the scrum and all of that, like, I have no idea what they do in there, but I've seen my brother do that. he's just che on Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I'm a great cheerer. but I have no real concept of what all is happening.
Speaker: and like when you can tackle and when you can't. And I feel like random people have tried to explain me explain it to me while I've been watching, but it's not ever really stuck.
Speaker: Yeah. so I don't pretend to fully understand it. I played a bit in school. And then actually this summer went, I think it is my first rugby game I've been to. My hometown has a team, the Glasgow Warriors. And I went with my brother-in-law.
Speaker: and some some friends of his. And we had a great time. I had several thousand people, maybe upwards to 10,000 people. it was ah It was really exciting. I loved the atmosphere. Had a great time. Definitely prefer watching it on television.
Speaker: Because, really you know, so much of the action was on the other side. And like you said, it's almost like just a scrum, even when it's not really scrum, there's people just piled on each other and you can't really see what's going on.
Speaker: So I definitely discovered that. I enjoy watching it and I did great time, but watching on television, if you want to see the nuances of the game and really what's happening.
Speaker: Okay, so like whenever they're throwing the ball, it's not like football where you're trying to like pass it and get it down the thing because they always throw it back behind.
Speaker: Yes, you can't you you cannot pass it forward. It has to go completely parallel or behind you. Yeah. Yeah, it's it's it's a fun game. Like, I've never been super into it. I watched, there's a tournament called the Six Nations, where Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, France, and Italy all play each other um over the course of six weeks or so. I'll watch that, but...
Speaker: That's usually about it for me. I've never gone Red Ross, as we find out at Riverside Park. Phoebe and Joey, good friends, they've come to watch Ross. And he says he's going to have to go Red Ross. and has to remind Joey. He's so stupid. It really is. mean, I guess he's just trying to get fired up. Oh, and it's here in my answers. Yeah, reminds Joey about the time they were waiting in line for Dancing with Wolves. Wow.
Speaker: and not Dancing with Wolves. Dances with Wolves. You're absolutely... I wrote Dancing. I know that. I know it's not Dancing. Even my lack of movie watching. I know that. Okay, I was going to say, did you watch this one?
Speaker: No, but... There is a small caveat here. My reputation is never having seen any movie everyone else has seen. I did watch Reservoir Dogs this week for the first time.
Speaker: Okay, and? You know what? like I enjoyed it. It was good. There's a couple of things that I didn't like, but that's more of a personal taste thing.
Speaker: I do get the cinematic brilliance of it. Like you can see why it stood the test of time and it was kind of groundbreaking and different.
Speaker: And, whoa you know, like I really did. And it was so well written. um Like the conversation about tipping that's within the first five minutes.
Speaker: Yes. so Again, and I don't know why, and that's the beauty of it, why that I thought that was so well written. And the scene where they're all kind of being assigned names. um Yeah. So well written and so well shot. So yeah, I enjoyed it. So now looking forward to whatever's next. um I go into the office tomorrow. left my physical list of this stuff in the office. So I'm going to go look at what's next on my list.
Speaker: I love that. Good job, Al. Thank you. i was I was feeling quite accomplished the other day, sitting watching sitting watching a movie. There you go. so Rossi starts to play, and he just leaps into the middle of the scrum and gets carried away, which the acting... Stupid. Stupid. Completely stupid. How many takes did that take? I can't help but wonder. ah We end up back in the boys' apartment. Rachel's coming in with what seems to be exciting news about Joshua. Joshua.
Speaker: But really, she just felt his pulse. Like, that was it. I don't know if this... She says Is this because she's jealous of Ross and is just trying to play up the Joshua thing? i couldn didn't quite get Yes.
Speaker: I was going to ask you how much Monica paid for the ah the electrical plans for the building. $25. And only three hours wait. Right. Yes. and Wow. If only more people knew. and that made me laugh. Yes. Her just straight up. And I'm just like, all right, pulse girl.
Speaker: You know, like we just kind of snotty to each other. But it was so funny. it was It was so good. al butt I think, like, I'm no architect. I wouldn't be able to read the blueprints. I think it might be kind of cool to glance an eye over them for five minutes. Wait!
Speaker: How stupid is that that I thought the same thing? Okay. like I thought that. I was like, I wonder where the blueprints are for our house. And I wonder what it would look like. And wouldn't it be cool? I wonder if And i like went into a whole little wondering thing about like if you could go and get it for any building, like could you do that?
Speaker: And it would only be $25. You've got to think it's like public record, I would assume. That's a very good... I might have to... I don't know what you would do with that knowledge, though. I mean, you would i mean obviously, she has very specific...
Speaker: I live in an older home than you do. Ours was built in 1968. So I would be curious what remodeling, because we know at least the previous owner did some remodeling, knocked out a wall, things like that. I'd be curious what the original plans were.
Speaker: Oh, yeah. Yeah. and That would be intriguing to me. Now I'm curious. I need to see if we can do that. Now we're at the airport.
Speaker: um Again, it's it's such a small moment in the concept. It's just iconic, this old Yemen storyline. Chandler and Janice, they arrive at the Yemen Express desk.
Speaker: And she's not leaving. She will not leave. She is not leaving until she has seen that plane head eastwards towards the Middle East into Yemen. He tries to get the lady behind the counter to give him a fake ticket. You know, what would you give a child if they wanted a ticket to play with?
Speaker: ah But she's just not grasping what he's saying. Understandably so. It does hark back to the age where you could just walk up to a gate at an airport and buy a ticket.
Speaker: Yeah. Well, and then ah like even walk all the way to the gate. Like I remember being a kid watching my dad's plane take off. Well, that is back, back, back. You can do that again in certain airports, including DFW, I think. Really? When did that come back? Oh, like the last week. You have to be like TSA pre-check and all of that stuff.
Speaker: But if you do that, you can now go up to the gate. I'm sure DFW one of those. Without a ticket. Without a ticket. So you can have that gate. Yeah. It has been 25 years. 25 years. yeah Crazy. Yeah. Like there won't be two.
Speaker: If I'm at the airport, I'm usually the one flying. But there will be times where that's going to be super cool. Yes. I remember doing that as a child. I remember doing that as a young adult. um You walk your loved one or whoever to the gate and then you stand and you watch the plane take off. Yep, as long as you have TSA PreCheck and you use it. Well, it's a program within TSA PreCheck called Gateside at DFW and numerous other ones. it cost and The pass to get there doesn't cost anything.
Speaker: And um you do need to sign up ahead of time, one to three days, and then you get a one-day pass. So that all seems fair enough.
Speaker: Yeah. They keep a limit on the amount of passes that are given out. ah But yeah, I think that's a really, really cool thing that we're doing that again.
Speaker: Well. Yeah, that's awesome. And it's awesome that it's free. But don't worry, you know what's not free? ah ticket to Yemen. No. Do you remember how much it cost on his American Express? $2,100. Again, then that's... On a library card, but they don't take that. You know, best part of 30 years ago. So let's just call it double. That's a lot of money. Chandler's just laid down for a ticket he really doesn't want. We go back over to Riverside Park. Ross is playing. He's getting hurt. He is covered in mud. He is beaten up. He has got sore leg. He feels like he's dying.
Speaker: Tell my son I love him. And yeah, it might be dead Ross instead of red Ross. um But then Emily, you know, she's looking out for him. She tries to give him some a some tips, some hints. And I think Devin is it has a bad ankle and David doesn't wear a cup. So he is he is locked. He is ready.
Speaker: And he is going to go to work on Devin and David. He hopes. Yeah. We go back up to the boys' apartment, Monica, there are holes everywhere.
Speaker: i mean, which is so unlike Monica, because that is untidy and messy, but I guess she just can't stand it. She has to know what's going on with a with these wires. But I just can't imagine Monica not covering all of these holes up pretty quickly.
Speaker: Seriously, but she sure did with all of her drawings. Right? i forget what there was one that she just liked. So it wasn't covering all... Yeah. Well, i thought it was a birthday cake, but it wasn't.
Speaker: It wasn't. Yeah. I don't think i caught it. don't know what it was. Yeah. um We end up back down in Central Park. Ross, Joey and Phoebe, they walk in with Emily and Ross is pretending that he's just fine. Wants to buy everyone coffee and Emily is bursting with pride. She is so impressed and she tries to hug him. But then I think at that point he kind of goes, basically, don't. It just all hurts. It hurts too much. And he has to kind of acknowledge the fact that he is he is in a lot of pain right now, is Ross.
Speaker: ah We end up this so good, so good at the airport. Chandler is leaving. And ah he's he's, yes, oh, this is where I've written it. Yeah, trying to find an energy source to replace fool to replace fuel. And he's going to be staying at 15 Yemen Road. Yemen, maybe the most famous address in Friends lore, that is.
Speaker: And it's the way he tries to board or, like, goes onto the the jet bridge and then turns around, like, strolling off, like, Janice must be miles away and she's still there.
Speaker: Yes. And then they go and they walk in. He walks in and he looks at that lady and says, when we get to Yemen, can I stay with you? stay with you And that's how it ends. And you're like, oh my God. Again, it's one of the great unanswered questions is did Chandler go to Yemen or did he not? We'll never know.
Speaker: and then did he turn around and pay $2,100 come back? Like, right what in the world? It's crazy. Yeah, just nuts behaviour. But I've always wondered if he did her and or didn't actually you know leave on that plane. and We end this episode in the boy's apartment. i think but I can't remember how much she said she was charged, but the superintendent and an electrician couldn't find the switch. $200 an hour.
Speaker: See, they that seems insane for, again, Manhattan, prices are different. It's all of that. But right now, i would pay $200 an hour now, and again, that's 30-year-old money.
Speaker: Well, I wouldn't, but um I feel like electricians are crazy expensive. yeah like Yeah. Like, I think if you want to be rich, you become a plumber or an electrician.
Speaker: Oh, there's money to be made in the trades without a doubt. um a A good, solid career path. We do find out what that switch is for in the variant. Why don't you share with us what it is what it does?
Speaker: Oh, it turns the TV on and off, ah supposedly. But actually, it might just be Phoebe being magic. I think it might just be as well. i like to think That's kind of what I thought. it was i mean She was reminding me of... like What is that? Is that Bewitched? ah do they die know that they they tweet No, it's I Dream of Jeannie.
Speaker: Dream of Jeannie. That's what that is. Yes. Bewitched, she she like crinkles her nose, right? Yes. ah huh yep Yep, that's it.
Speaker: She's very I Dream of Jeannie-ish. I love it. Because it's a technical term. the he I love it. Well, that again wraps up this episode. Who would be your Gunther Central Park of the week?
Speaker: Just because love her so much, it's Janice. Janice gets a pet, as always, yes I mean, what said virus.
Speaker: I love her so much. She is just there she so good. So good. Every show she's, every episode is elevated, I feel, when she's in Well, and she makes it, like, hilarious and awesome. And then it's like, who does that? And she's, like, genuinely concerned because literally nobody cares. Yeah.
Speaker: And she's very concerned. And like mad at them about it, you know? And and I just, I don't know. She's so funny. And in it i she's awesome. She truly, truly is. I thought about going for Janice. I did stick with Chandler.
Speaker: This is fantastic. If only we released a video of this podcast. Deanna's put on the mask of somebody. I don't even know. I think it's under Spider-Man because there's little magnet things to make it to click eyes Click his on. That's phenomenal. I think it goes underneath the Spider-Man mask.
Speaker: I love it. I'm in Fred's room and there's just so much to look at. Just random random bits bits and pieces. yeah I'm going with Chandler this week. just The whole Yemen storyline I think is so good.
Speaker: i know there's a cheeseburger what but it has teeth that is isn't that weird that is horrifying i this it is and he's like missing a tooth and they look like people teeth i don't even know what that is but i i'm can have nightmares I think I would too. That's terrible. yeah um Yeah. Chandler, for me, the whole Yemen storyline, the whole crashing out where he doesn't know how to tell Janice that he's leaving is just, just iconic for me. How are we measuring this week's episode?
Speaker: Oh, in bright red nails. What else could it be? I thought you might say that or in library cards. I like the bright red. Oh, library cards. Yeah, no. Bright red nails. All the way. yeah All the way. How many are you giving it this week?
Speaker: I'm giving it nine. i like it. I like it. Yeah. yeah I did have eight and a half and I changed my mind because I was like, Ross sucks. That's why it's not 10. But um but it it was good Yeah, it was great. And again, it we said I feel like I say this all the time. I knew the rugby storyline when I saw the title, but forgot that this was Yemen Road and all of that. I gave an eight and a half. I'm going to stick with eight and a half just because, but that still makes it one of the top ones for this season for me. It's so good.
Speaker: It's just, just fantastic. Let's see, next week, it's the one with the fake party. Oh, I love this one. You are ready for the one with the fake party.
Speaker: I am. good. Okay, this is a Fuggler. Oh, it sure is. That sounds filthy. but It does, right? It does. But um yeah, it's a thing. And let me tell you something random. This morning on the floor at school, I was like, what is that? So I picked it up and it was like a teeny tiny pair of camouflage underwear.
Speaker: And so I took it to the front office and I handed it to our secretary. And it's, you know, just teeny tiny, you know, that' obviously from a toy. And she was like, oh, these are from a fugler. And I was like, I excuse me. Right. Right.
Speaker: We don't use that language at school. Exactly. And so this is the second time today that this that has come across my world. and But like, why does it have teeth? Yeah. And some missing. and and it's But they're late they feel like real teeth.
Speaker: They're gross. That is kind of horrifying. Yeah. Yeah. But there you go. All right. Anyway, I'm so crazy. Hey, we are hanging on. It's fine. We are. Yeah. So the one with the fake party, that's it. This has been a treat. I have enjoyed revisiting this one with you.
Speaker: Me too. Thank you so much, Al. Of course. And as always, thank you everybody out there for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
