by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Adarsh Ramchand and it's Tactics Tuesday. The Reds left it late on Saturday in West London with Darwin Nunes grabbing the headlines, but on today's show we'll be assessing the match in the Champions League ah ahead of another busy week as the Reds are back in Champions League action to

Guest Introduction and Match Insights

take on Lil at Anfield. I'm joined by Michael Lake. Michael, how's it going?
00:00:35
Michael
Yeah, I'm doing really good. I mean, it felt, it felt a bit of squeaky bum time towards the end of that game against Brentford, but, uh, and I've got to admit, I've got to put my hands up. Darwin Eunice coming on. I was not filled with, with hope.
00:00:47
Michael
Um, but in the end, I mean, he's, he's pulled out the bag and got us the win and now we can look forward to Leo and potentially seeing, uh, maybe even a little bit of a rotator side, but I'm sure we'll get into that, uh, in a bit.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's it it's a great feeling. I feel like this weekend, we were on the verge of basically a zero out of 10 weekend and then it turned into a 10 out of 10 weekend. So yeah, still buzzing off that that victory against Brentford. We'll touch on that in a bit in part one. We'll touch on obviously Darwin Nunez, some of the other game changers as well in Harvey Elliott and so Federico Chiesa.

Players' Contributions and Squad Depth

00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Obviously, we were so close to drawing that game, Michael, but got the 2-0 win in the end. You mentioned Darwin Nunez. Didn't fill you with a lot of confidence when he came on the pitch, but he got he got the three points for Liverpool.
00:01:32
Michael
Yeah, I mean, he's he's doubled his goal tally in the Premier League in one game. He's gone from two goals to four goals. So, I mean, that kind of history kind of speaks for why it didn't really fill me feel we with confidence. I mean, it was one of the most dominant games we've seen, um like with the amount of shots we have and with the fact that we had a like 3.4, 3.5 expected goals at the end of this game, like,
00:02:00
Michael
kind of shows you how dominant it was. We created ah loads of big chances. We we were firing shots from distance. Like ah in the first half, that SazaBy shot that hits the bar, he hits that so sweetly. He just wanted that to nestle top bins. if He deserves it. He's worked so hard. But I think like it was what it was an interesting game. And the fact that Nunez has come up um with the winner when everyone's talking about Willy goes to like Saudi maybe with the bids that they've kind of kind of mooched forward um but like I think we can get a bit carried away with being like oh he scored two goals he should stay forever but like he still has been a bit poor um but obviously if he can keep finishing like that because they were two very good finishes like I think he if he if he if this is the turning point in the season by all means keep him he is great like I I'm looking forward to seeing if he can kick on um and obviously the Leal game might be a good
00:02:58
Michael
opportunity for him to show that but yeah I think like going away to Brentford and you I don't know if you heard the quotes from Thomas Frank saying that like they've played Arsenal, they've played Man City recently, and Liverpool are just a step above.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:03:11
Michael
That is music to my ears. that is like when When Arsenal fans are saying like they're one of the best teams in the league, when City fans... like City are the only other team that can claim that, and at this season they would even admit that they've been poor.
00:03:23
Michael
But like the fact that Liverpool are the best team in the league, and Brentford are no like They're not a bad team by any stretch of the imagination and we kind of dispatched with them. they had like they They had very minimal chances for how good they are and how dangerous they are. um I think this was this is back to where we should be compared to where we have been in the last few games.
00:03:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, I mean, it was a brilliant result in the end, but i didn't it like you said, it didn't look like that for a lot of that match. And I think it just shows the persistence. I saw the stat that we we won the game with our 36th and 37th shot of the match, which is basically our last two attempts on goal, um which obviously shows the resilience that's in this global team.
00:04:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it's also um the first injury time winner that we've got on the slot, because a lot of the games on the slot, we've kind of either been comfortable or maybe just not performed very well.
00:04:04
Michael
Mm hmm.
00:04:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we not really had to wait to the last minute to get a goal. um So that's refreshing to see because I think we've forgotten how good a last minute winner feels because it is incredible. I was, I don't know about you when you're watching the game, but me and my dad went absolutely crazy because it just felt like it was going to be one of those days we would will slip up and we would start into question. But yeah, I just love a last minute winner. ah um Speaking about other players that sort of made an impact, obviously Darwin Nunes, but I thought Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa when they both came on made massive contributions. I thought actually it's refreshing to see Chiesa on that left-hand side when maybe Gackpo isn't playing well or Diaz and then obviously Harvey Elliott making those contributions as well. He was involved in both goals.
00:04:56
Michael
Yeah, I mean, like they're both players who have a lot of energy and when they're on the pitch, when they're fit. um And I think like having that, Kiesa can play on both sides, so he can be a player to give Salah a rest, because he's probably the only other player in our attacking sort of substitutes that can really play on that right hand side properly. But he is also a right footed left winger. He played there quite a lot for Juve and for Italy. um So like he's, he is a ah really good kind of,
00:05:26
Michael
player to have in the in the system to ah to be able to swap play swap players out, especially if you're going to start Dias and Gackpo at the same time, and you want to find someone to substitute on for on that left-hand side if you if you don't want to keep them both on for the whole game. like that having that sort of ah Having him coming on. And I think like we're seeing glimpses of Keiza being that player. like he could be like That 100 million pound player had two, three seasons ago.
00:05:53
Michael
um I think like if he can keep fitness like he could definitely make a claim for Starting maybe obviously Gackpody as that's a lot of competition on that left-hand side and Salah is Salah, but I Seeing how it's going if he carries this on and starts playing better start scoring goals stuff like that I would maybe feel like I salah has competition which is always good like salah loved competition with manet when they were playing on opposite sides but maybe having someone actually chasing him for the same spot might actually kick him up the arse if he does stay if he doesn't stay
00:06:32
Michael
maybe Kiaza can fill in there. Or maybe we'll sign a new player. I don't know. But what seeing Kiaza play well on that on that ah ah right-hand side, left-hand side, I mean, he kind of drifts into space quite well. of what Every time he plays, he drift he likes to drift into space as opposed to hugging the touch line like Gackpo and Salah like to in this system. So it's ah it's a little bit of refreshing. on them And I think Elliot coming on,
00:06:56
Michael
I think it will be a good fight ah between Elliot and Sotheby if Elliot doesn't get sold because I've seen all these rumours that Elliot might get sold to Brighton and Dortmund and I think if Brighton and Dortmund are after your player, maybe you should keep hold of them.
00:07:09
Michael
um So I think like him and Sotheby as that attacking midfielder sort of rotation option and then dropping Jones more as a McAllister replacement. um I think that midfield seems so much better. Like I think i think Jones isn't quite that guy to be playing attacking mid. He likes to drop a bit too much. He likes to sit on the ball a bit too much. In that attacking mid we need someone who's just gonna create and run. And that is Sotheby and that is Elliot. Elliot did that when he came on. He created the chances and he see He's always doing that regularly. um And if he can get more and more ah fitness, if he can get playing more, ah that could be a good fight as well.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it just shows how much strength and depth Liverpool actually have. I know we, as Liverpool fans, want to complain that we're not making enough signings, but one of the things that we can't really complain about is the attacking depth. I mean, not just from the front six

Academy Success and Match Preview

00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
that we've got, but even in midfield when you've got Harvey Elliott on the bench, you even got youngsters coming through, like Jaden Dans um anguma and Guma, and Guma Hosori, who's coming through. And then you've got, obviously, Kieza, who's just been a new signing end.
00:08:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's taken a while to settle in, but I think this was the first time I've seen him and he's like, okay, I can see where he can fit into this little team. He can, he can play across the front three. He'd come on as an impact. So he can cover for Salah as well. Um, but it's just, I don't know about you, but I know you spoke a lot already on this podcast about van Dyck, Michaelis to Salah. It's good to give sort of the mention and the shout out to players that probably don't get enough game time, but when they do, ah especially on the weekend, they made, they made their mark.
00:08:39
Michael
Yeah, I mean like ah Elliot and like Elliot is I can see why maybe there's links of him going because he just isn't getting game time But also I think the people who are making up those links are a little bit lazy in terms of he has been injured Like when would he have got the game time if he's if he's done his hamstring or whatever he did um So I think like he's gonna be he's ah he's a Liverpool fan as well.
00:08:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Yeah.
00:09:01
Michael
He's gonna want to stay so I think like him being sort of like fighting with Soz apply or even kind of getting shoved out onto the right wing where he did start um is it could be could could be ah could see him kind of playing more in the future and I think like those are like as you said like our Squad is actually really good like for the fact that we haven't made many signings in our sort of few windows Like for some reason some of some of these players have become like world-class or like good and enough at least
00:09:34
Michael
out of nowhere like even like even likes of like endo on the bench like i would be fine with him coming on every time he's played he's been great like simicast he was he was serviceable he was fine like he's a he's a good backup left back or good starting left back i mean he started the games and and he was fine but i think like the we've got a quite a deep squad there's maybe you could say a holding midfielder maybe a striker that's about it then and I think like giving praise to those players who can just kind of slot in and there's no change like that is the highest sort of praise you can give that like you can take a Macalester out and put a Jones in no real change you can take a Diaz out and put Nunez in no real change you can take a Trent out and put Bradley in
00:10:22
Michael
slight drop off but no real change. like those sort That sort of squad building that we've done. You can take an Allison out and you can put Keller here in.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
color and yeah no
00:10:30
Michael
There's no drop off. like that is ah That is a squad building masterclass. And I think like the fact that our academy has just suddenly become like so amazing I think is ah is ah is a testament to and I don't know it's not popular but a testament to FSG because like we haven't been spending on big profiles but we've been we've obviously changed the approach to the academy and stuff and that that is showing in the fact of like Jones and Trent our regular first team as Quants is always on the bench Bradley's always on the bench we've signed talented youngsters like Dokken and Gamoa like we've got like a we've got a system coming through and we don't really need to spend
00:11:11
Michael
but hundred million um and I think like i i I am always a big fan of the academy and I want the academy to be a big part of Liverpool so I'm really much enjoying it and I'm liking that the squad is filled out with academy players.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, and it just it's testament as well, like we've said on previous episodes, the the Academy and how well, like, Liverpool obviously have signed that a new goalkeeper, but I mean, ah the way Keller has been performing as a number two, the way Alison's been performing, makes it very difficult for him to even come into the squad.
00:11:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Bradley come into the squad, been brilliant, Kwanzaa, Jones you mentioned, Trent has been around for a long time, so
00:11:46
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah you're right I think that's actually kind of helped us save a lot of money in the transfer market but also these players are probably worth what 30, 40, 50 million upwards if you're thinking about their value not that not that they're for sale but it just shows that there is a lot of progress being made in the academy and those players making the step up.
00:11:53
Michael
Damn.
00:12:02
Michael
I mean, whenever we sign, whenever we sell one of those players that we've signed as like an academy player, ah we always seem to get like 20 plus million, like Jordan Ibe, Dominic Solanke, like those sort of players, like somehow we got like an insane amount for those boys.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah
00:12:18
Michael
Obviously, Slanky's come good now, but Jordan Ibe's playing non-league football. Like he's not the player that is worth 20 million to Bournemouth. But I think like that just kind of shows the academy.
00:12:30
Michael
We've always had a good history. like Jarrah Carragher, all of those boys coming through um is really is really like, I'm glad that it's still a thing. It could have been like um like what Chelsea do where like they sign loads of youngsters, but the youngsters never make it in because they sign the big players to replace them.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:12:47
Michael
And I would prefer it to be this way around.
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, indeed. And hopefully maybe we'll see some of those academy players or maybe the younger players playing in the Champions League because Liverpool are playing little at home on Tuesday. And we're going to be touching on that after this very short break.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fantastic. So, like I said before the break, we're going to be talking about Champions League action. The Reds are returning to the Champions League. I don't know about you, Michael, but it feels like forever since we've been in playing in the Champions League. Not in terms of this season, but no, actually, I mean, in terms of this season, because I've kind of forgotten about the Girona game. The last Champions League game I remember is us playing Royal Madrid.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So obviously back to the Champions League, we're playing Lil at home. We had a look about on Lil just before we jumped on the podcast and we saw a crazy stat that they're 20 games unbeaten in all competitions. They're doing quite well in the Champions League, they're third in League One. What do you think, how tough a test do you think this is going to be for Liverpool on Tuesday?
00:14:01
Michael
Well, I mean, I was going to come into this and be like, oh, it's just Leo. Like they were they won the league a few years ago. Like they've lost all their good players, but evidently there there's something about them. they've ah they've got They've got something going for them and they've got players like.
00:14:17
Michael
they've got They've got some interesting names. like They've got Munier who played for Dortmund. They've got ah like a few players who've been there for years, like Cabela and Andre like they and David as well.
00:14:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:14:30
Michael
David was linked with everyone like um ah a few seasons ago. like I think like it's not the team that won the won them the league, but for some reason they're doing very well. They've beaten the likes of Real Madrid Madrid. I guess they've just got something against Madrid. Like in this run that they've been on and they've they've been playing really well and I was very surprised when I saw that start because I just thought this would be a game where we could maybe bring in the youngsters and kind of get gab rotate the team a little bit. I still feel that. I still feel that like we could rest a few players, maybe not Salah as I was going to say.
00:15:09
Michael
um but like maybe have like some of the youngsters on the bench and maybe play like Kwanza and Bradley and Sima Kass and um maybe not Endo but like give Jones a starting berth as opposed to playing McAllister I mean the game after is Ipswich which I mean Ipswich are playing very well but it's not exactly like we need to rest players so I mean this could be this could go one of two ways it could be that we see it as a little bit of like a it's a home champions league fixture we've done so well we rotate the team or it could be that we actually take them seriously and they've been 20 games unbeaten for a reason so we have to kind of give them the respect um because they were they they played against athletic Madrid away and they beat them there so and they beat them 3-1 it wasn't even like they were like
00:15:57
Michael
and And they didn't have much possession. like That's the thing. like they When they play the big teams, they're fine with no possession, but they still find a way. And I think sometimes we've had we've struggled this season. Sometimes we battered them with batter teams likeford um like Obviously, it took a last-minute winner for it, but we still had loads and loads of shots. so I really can't guess this game because you i If I was being arrogant, I would say we could stroll this but ah seeing that they've been on such a good run um kind of makes me feel a little bit more apprehensive.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I know it's an interesting game because like usually in the position that we're we're in, in

Champions League Performance Significance

00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
the Champions League top of the group, we're pretty much basically qualified. I think Lillis basically, I think they'll make the the last 16 but I think, or was it the last 24 of the competitive format, this new Champions League format.
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
but they're probably still fighting to secure their place in the next round. So they're definitely going to just come and settle for a point or or anything, or try to minimize defeat.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they will come to win.
00:17:05
Michael
Mm hmm.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And also, yeah, like you said, they're form 20 unbeaten, they're being roamed in an athletic country. I think athletic are a top of La Liga as well. So that's kind of it makes it even more impressive when you say that ah they won 3-1.
00:17:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um it's It's an interesting game because yeah, how does, how does slot sort of interpret this game? Does he, because we've seen in the past, maybe in, I don't know, the Champions League games against Toronto, for example, or even in the Carabao Cup, where we're probably going to get through, but, or even in the FA Cup, Akriton Stanley, he still has played a semi strong team, but with a few changes. Do you think he'll do the same? Who do you think is going to be the main starters?
00:17:42
Michael
I think like, i I don't think he's going to take um that many liberties with the game. I think maybe he might, I think he'll probably start Salah, but I mean, the team that I could, I think he maybe could go for would be like a fairly, ru I think he'll start Nunes, probably. He'll probably play Diaz out on the left.
00:18:04
Michael
Or he'll play Kiesa there if he's starting Salah. If he's not starting Salah, I could see Kiesa starting on the right. I could see Elliot starting. As I said, I think Jones maybe getting rotated in for McAllister. I think the only like the only rotation that I think is pretty nailed on is Quonsa playing as opposed to Canate and Bradley potentially for Trent.
00:18:30
Michael
but ah maybe maybe not Bradley being nailed on, but I think Quants is the only one I could say from maybe Shaw is gonna be the the rotation that he's gonna make. um Because like he's he's he his lesson from the first forest defeat when he didn't really rotate and then we got caught out after the international break. And mean like he does like to rotate a little bit more, not entirely. like He doesn't make wholesale changes very often, as you said, he only like kind of tweaks of starting line up, especially against like a team like Akron Stanley where he could have rotated the full team and and no one would have batted an eye. um But like, I think like, I think he'll take it seriously because obviously Champions League is first season if he can do the double, incredible. If he can do the quadruple,
00:19:18
Michael
still on um like like that would be even better so i think he's going to take every game seriously i think our squad is deep enough that like he could rotate the entire team and it would be as good as the leal team and still do a job um but i think he will keep like sort of the spine the same he'll probably keep van dyke in he'll probably keep salah in he'll probably keep
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:19:41
Michael
Grabbing Burchin. Outside of that, I think you might rotate certain players. Maybe you'll bring him right back in Robertson. I don't know.
00:19:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, it's definitely definitely interesting team selection for slot on Tuesday. um In terms of the Champions League as a whole, obviously we've pretty much already qualified for the next the knockout stages, but how important do you think it is for Liverpool to win the next two games in the Champions League? Because we've got Lille this week, PSV you next week and the last matchday of the Champions League. it does it Would you care if we lost the next two games or would you want to It sounds like a dumb question, but if we had won both games and we go A out of A in the first league phase of the Champions League ever, that's pretty impressive, isn't it?
00:20:23
Michael
yeah I mean it's a statement but for sure like being top of the Premier League and if we go unbeaten in the Champions League we're only conceding one goal while playing the likes of Real Madrid and that. Like I think that is a massive statement and I think um like we want to be top.
00:20:42
Michael
correct me if i'm wrong but i think the whatever round it is that the top eight go into i think it is seeded so i think top so if you finish higher yeah ah you're meant to get a better ah better draw so i think there there is still a benefit of pushing um unlike the old system where by now we would be
00:20:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. nice Yeah.
00:21:04
Michael
like cruising we would be playing the kids we would be like which i kind of enjoyed i quite like the like kind of nothing games where you got to see some of the players who never really get a look in and i think it to be fair it's a bit weird that like after christmas we're still playing champions league group games um but i think like
00:21:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:21:22
Michael
like it would it This is an opportunity to rotate, especially with the fact that like the Premier League is getting quite intense and and like the um um we are so high up. We're on 18 points compared to, I mean Barcelona are the closest on 15, so i the unlike to drop out the top eight,
00:21:41
Michael
were five points ahead. So if we even draw this next game, where most but we're pretty much safe um in the top eight. So it's not the end of the world, but I think we should still take it seriously. I'd want to be top of the pile um and kind of seeing that, I mean, City are 22nd and we're around Madrid. Real Madrid are 20th. All the way down there. PSG aren't even in the, aren't even in the like,
00:22:07
Michael
playoffs so like I think like the fact that like potentially if results go badly all three of those teams could be out who have got to the latter stages of the of the competition in the last few years like and we finished top I see us being well we all I feel like we already are the favorites but like that is a real statement and I think everyone would be like worried about playing us in any competition Plymouth our guy will watch out
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I mean, I was just looking at the Champions League table now and realizing that Lilla eighth in the Champions

Potential Threats and Upsets in Champions League

00:22:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
League, so they've, they could even get automatic, I don't know, I was gonna say, I was gonna say automatic promotion there for a second, and um automatic qualification to the next round.
00:22:42
Michael
Yeah yeah.
00:22:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that's, I mean, there's a lot on the line for them, but just looking, because at the Champions League as a whole, how much, like if I only see Real Madrid as the main threat from Liverpool, I think they're the only team that can stop us from winning. And that's purely, purely down to past experience, but also I don't think City are the same team Arsenal, not really a threat in the Champions League. I could see Barcelona maybe being a big threat. I think in Europe as well, they've been really good this season, but I don't know. What do you think? Do you think
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
how I really think we can we can take the Champions League seriously and get ah win this competition. I think this is the best opportunity Liverpool have had in a number of years.
00:23:27
Michael
yeah Yeah I mean like I would have said like Real Madrid I agree is the biggest threat but Barcelona are also very good and looking at the rest of the teams like I don't see Arsenal as that big of a threat I think like they can bottle it but if they play up yeah if they play against a semi-good team that can score an open play they're or that have big players they're screwed like like they they're not gonna score any goals like maybe like into into have been very good over the last few seasons like leva kuzin we backed them for nail so like not not the same team they were last season by an under company.
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Especially in Europe.
00:24:08
Michael
not really seeing them as the same threat like they're bossing the Bundesliga but that's because the it's the Bundesliga and I really appreciate the Bundesliga but the fact that like Bayern have Harry Kane up front is the only reason they're top not because of Vincent Kompany and I think Slot would batter Vincent um and like and the like the rest of the Italian teams like Juventus have drawn more games than they've won all season like they've the Milan we've beaten like as I said I think it's i think it's really down to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter as our three big threats like obviously the other Premier League teams can do a job on their day like it can be a bit like hit or miss if we if we come up against them but I think there's only really three big opposition and potentially if games don't go Real Madrid's way then Real Madrid aren't going to be in it for very much longer so I can really see us wass going really really far um and
00:25:04
Michael
Like, as I said, like the likes of like Arsenal, Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Aston Villa are probably higher than Arsenal and Leverkusen in my, my estimations. um Like, but none of them are, I don't, I can't see them winning the Champions League, any of them. So I, I really feel confident this season.
00:25:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, no, let's definitely, let's definitely hope so. I'm hoping for Real Madrid to, I mean, who they, who they've got, who they've got in the next few games, you know.

Michael
Yeah. I mean, Brest is seventh, so like they've got they've had some good games. So like literally, if Real Madrid lose kind of one more game, there's a chance that they're they they could be crashing out. They're on nine points. Yeah, I mean, if they if they lose one one and draw if they lose one, draw one. Or if they lose both, obviously.
00:26:03
Michael
ah They could be they could be out like they're they're only what 4.4 places above the relegation zone in inverted commas um Like and there's no Europa League this season.

Yeah, half I think they're gone. For some reason, I don't know why they've had such a poor campaign. They've got so many good players, but I mean, yeah. Yeah, so that's pretty poor from their standards. But anyway, that is all for today on the Tactics Tuesday show on the Daily Liverpool Podcast. Join us tomorrow for Wildcard Wednesday as we will have match reaction to Liverpool playing Lille as we hope for a seventh successive win in Europe. From all of us at Daily Liverpool, it's goodbye for now and we'll see you all soon.
