Kerkes Joins Liverpool

00:01:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. Milos Kerkes is now officially a Liverpool player.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was in Liverpool over the last couple of days for his medical. That has obviously gone through without any hitches, without any problems.
00:01:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as of Thursday, around about kind of midday, Liverpool officially confirmed the signing of Kerkhez via their ex-accounts.
00:01:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah ah Photographs have gone up, interviews have also gone up. Kirk has said I'm really happy. It's a real honour for me, privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and the biggest club in England.
00:02:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm just really, really happy and excited. After this, I'll go home and in my hometown, enjoy a few days. And then I can't really wait to come back and put the training kit on.
00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
and start to train and prepare for the season.

Defensive Strategy Overhaul

00:02:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Kirk has comes in 40 million pounds signing from Bournemouth. He comes in surely as our first choice left back for next season in what will be an upgraded and updated back line with two new fullbacks.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously Jeremy f Frimpong came in a few weeks ago to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold. So, I think this is going to be a really intriguing and and a really exciting period for Liverpool fans across the squad in terms of like what Liverpool are doing this close season. But particularly in that back line, you know, we've had Trent and Robertson kind of, you know marauding down those flanks, those fullback areas for so long.
00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so it's I think it's a huge change and it's not completely without risk. Players, sometimes they need time to settle and you never quite know how they will perform come match day on that first game of the season.
00:03:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that Kerkhez's risk factor is probably somewhat mitigated by the fact that he's yeah he's already got Premier League experience under his belt at Bournemouth where you know, he had a really, really good season. I mean, indeed, the team itself, Bournemouth, had a really good season. So he's coming in full of confidence and, you know, looking to make that step up. You know, he's joining the Premier League champions and, you know, he'll be you know determined to make a mark because the standard
00:04:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
has been so high, you know in that position at left back set by Andy Robertson, who's been, you know, an absolutely, you know, phenomenal servant for the club.
00:04:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
And as I just say, that that kind of those fallback positions were so important for Liverpool. in terms of being one of the key elements for the success that we enjoyed both at domestic level and, you know, in in the Champions League, winning the Champions League, getting three Champions League finals in five seasons.
00:04:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, Robertson was one of the key components in not just how he kind of fulfilled the kind of tactical instructions of of Jurgen Klopp, but just that energy, the the the commitment, you know, the fight and the desire. And I think Kerkhofer has that You can see that he's, you know, he's someone who, you know, he can scrap.
00:05:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think he's going to be phased you know by stepping up into this at this level. you know He's a seasoned Premier League campaigner now and you know he's he's an international. And I think a lot of people forget that sometimes.
00:05:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know We look at these players coming to ah ah Premier League team, but we often forget that these guys, you know they're playing for their national team. know They're playing and in the European Championships or World Cups or qualifiers, big matches in front of big crowds.
00:05:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so, you know, they they already have a degree of kind of pedigree to them. And Kirk is is is certainly one of those players. So I think it's going to be really, really interesting to see how he ah ah steps into that position.
00:06:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, and look, you know, I think this season slot, I do, you know, I've said this before. I think that he's going to be, i think he's going to be quite tactically flexible this season. So it could be that, you know, Liverpool play with three at the back or four at the back, you know, you know, is Frimpong, is his signing a kind of,
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
an indicator that Liverpool are looking to maybe go three at the back and and use wing backs as opposed to full backs, which, you know, Frimpong is more used to.
00:06:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But either way, I think that the signing of Kerkis, I think is a real, I think it's an excellent signing. He was the best left back, I think, in the Premier League last season. And, you know, because of his age profile, he think he's just 21.
00:06:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, that there's just so much there for Arnie Slott to work on in terms of developing him into, you know, the kind of player that, you know, we had in Andy Robertson.
00:07:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
You Frimpong on the other side, I think he's also one to look out for because... I think there there there could be a period of adjustment for him because it's the first taste of Premier League football for him coming over from the Bundesliga and Leverkusen where, you know, again, look, the Bundesliga is not a joke league, you know, and...
00:07:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that we sometimes we, know, we're quite quite flippant in this country about other leagues that may be dominated by by one team. And Germany falls into that category with Bayern Munich.
00:07:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But look, he won the Bundesliga with Bayern Leverkusen and not Bayern Munich. So, you know, there's a quality player there. And he's a Dutch international. Again, he plays for the national team.
00:07:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he'll have his compatriots there to lend

Dutch Influence at Liverpool

00:07:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
a hand. So, you know, significant people, you know, Skipper Van Dijk, Gravenberg in midfield, and you know, who's going to be playing quite, you know, he's going to be in close proximity to Frimpong, you know, who's going to be in that kind of full-back position, Gravenberg in that kind of, the you know, the base of the midfield. So I think there'll be a lot of interaction between those two.
00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, there's Cody Gakpo, who's Dutch international. And then obviously not to mention and the manager, Arnie Slott himself. And so, you know, there's a growing Dutch contingent in in this Liverpool team.
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so I think that's another ah ah interesting kind of of ah factor that that we can see how that develops and what kind of influence these players have on this Liverpool team, know, moving forward.
00:08:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I don't have any fears about Frimpong settling in and really making that position his, although he he'll have solid competition from Connor Bradley, which I think is it's good. I think it's necessary for the team if we're going to, you know, if we're really going to perform to the best of our ability. You need players who are pushing forward.
00:09:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know, in each position. So even in goal, look, we've got the best goalkeeper in the world, but Marmo Dashfali has come in and Marmo Dashfali has not come in to, you know, to to sit on the bench. You know, he has said himself that he's coming in to be number one. And that's, you want that attitude from you, from all your players in the squad.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
You don't want players coming in and saying, well, yeah, look, I'm happy to be a number two. if you're going to play for an elite club, if you're going to play for Liverpool, if you're going to play for Real Madrid, you have to come in thinking that you are the best in that position.
00:09:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so I think that at right back, I think i think it's good for Frimpong that he's got Conor Bradley breathing down his neck. And I think it's good for Conor Bradley that he's got a really good player like Frimpong you know, ahead of him, yeah we're we're saying ahead of him, but and and we're assuming that and it we're probably right because again, you don't fork out 30 million pounds for a fullback and then stick him on the bench. But I do think that it's good for both players that they've got each other to, you know, to bring the best out of each other in terms of competition. And in terms of the other side, in terms of Kerkhez on the left back side,
00:10:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
It will be interesting to see who his competition is going to be.

Transfer Speculations

00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
know, I've mentioned this before in the last podcast so that it does look like Andy Robertson is the one most likely to leave.
00:10:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
simply because of you know the fact that Atletico Madrid have been reportedly after Robertson. And I think that's a really attractive move. you know If you're 31 years old, you've got a year left in your contract.
00:11:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
it looks It sounds like a really good move. I would hope that Liverpool persuade Robertson to stay for at least one more year one point, you know to to one Have another season, Liverpool. You know, he might not be the first choice, which is not going to go down well with Robertson.
00:11:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think that he's going to be useful. And it's it's not as if Kirk is will play every single game because there are going to be games where you just need the the experience of Robertson of playing for playing in the Champions League or for playing...
00:11:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know, if we're away at Man City and, you know, we're, don't know, one nil up or even two nil up or whatever. And, you know, you want to see out that last 20, 25 minutes. I think you do need people like Andy Robertson, you know, to impart that experience and and really just to guide Kirk as,
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
in that position. So I would hope that Robertson does stay and Simicast moves on, but, you know, we'll we'll see what happens. But I mean, so far the transfer window has been, it's been, it's been something like, i've you know, it's it's not something as Liverpool supporters, we're used to experiencing this level of activity.

Liverpool's Transfer Strategy

00:12:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Richard Hughes, the sporting director, really taking this transfer window by storm, getting the club on the front foot and just getting things done quickly and efficiently, which really is the kind of modus operandi of Liverpool's recruitment stat strategy under FSG.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I remember that Hughes came in for criticism last season for the lack of transfer, know, the money lack of money spent by Liverpool. I'm not sure why that was. I think that was really harsh because it's not down to him as the transfer as the sporting director.
00:12:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
if if Liverpool decide to keep their powder dry. And he'd only come into the job. And i think a lot of people blamed him for Trent not signing. And now, you know, the Canate situation and the Salah and Van Dijk situation.
00:13:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
i think all of that was really harsh. But I think this summer he's really put the club, or he's helped to put the club in a very healthy position in the market. And that's really important. You want your sporting director.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
to have, you know, this kind of, this respect or gravitas in the market. In the same way that a manager, it's important that he has that kind of gravitas when he walks into the dressing room. And I think it's important for a sporting director to project that gravitas in the market because it's just another facet to Liverpool's strengths.
00:13:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
It all counts when you put the whole package together. Players want to see a club that's well run and it's professional and it just gives them confidence that the foundations of the club are solid.
00:13:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, OK, we're going to go to a quick break and after that there's there's more transfer news to discuss.
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
OK, more transfer news. it It has been reported at the time of this recording, which is um Thursday afternoon, that Liverpool are now in advanced negotiations for the transfer of Crystal Palace captain Mark Gahey.
00:15:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace are reportedly looking for around £40 million pounds for their captain, and Liverpool are looking to snap him up for £30 million, pounds given that he's only got one year left on his contract. And we are in need of reinforcement reinforcement reinforcements, if I can get that word out, in the centre-back area following Jarrell Kwanzaa's departure for by Leverkusen earlier this week. And
00:15:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
You know, there is still a little bit of uncertainty around Ibrima Kanate, who still hasn't signed his contract and he's got a year left on his contract.
00:15:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And a little bit of uncertainty surrounding Joe Gomez. And that seems to be kind of par for the course virtually every season. I think that. Joe Gomez is just one of those players.
00:15:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think that gets linked every summer with leaving the club. I think that's partly down to the fact that, you know, he's he's he's not he's not seen ah as i a dead set regular week in, week out. and And he's not, you know, it's it's Van Dijk and it's Canate who are the first choice centre-backs.
00:16:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Gomez comes in if he's got a fill in at centre back or he's filling in at right back or left back anywhere across the back line. And so I think that's it's inevitable that there is speculation around Joe Gomez.
00:16:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I would hope that Liverpool keep hold of Joe Gomez for the reason that i've always that I've already mentioned, and that is his versatility.
00:16:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
The fact that he can cover at centre-back. He can cover at right-back and at left-back. And he does an excellent job in all of those defensive positions. He's so experienced.
00:16:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's our longest service player a serving player now. And I just don't think that there aren't many of those players around who they tick all those boxes. they They're experienced, they're they're good at what they do and they can play as effectively in each of those defensive positions, whether it's at centre-back, either side of centre-back, the left side or the right side, and right-back and left-back.
00:17:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
not many players of those that can do that at the elite level. and And so I think that Liverpool should... I don't think they should let go of him. I think they should keep him.
00:17:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And I hope he does stay. But there is that uncertainty over him. And there is that and so uncertainty over Canate and his contract situation. So...
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
the The Mark Gehi thing, you know, has the the news has really picked up on Gehi in the last 24 hours. There were rumours around him over the last week or so. But in the last 24 hours, it really has looked as though there is something in the works with Gehi.
00:18:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
And again, I just think it will be a real statement of intent by the club. that when we're not just looking to defend this Premier League crown, but we're going to go and attack this season in the Premier League, you know, while we're in the position of strength and also in the Champions League.
00:18:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
where we fell short last season, albeit, you know, we lost to the eventual winners. But definitely the Champions League is where Liverpool will really want to make a mark and attack that competition. And look, as a club, historically, you know we're the most successful club in England across the board and particularly in Europe.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think that Arnie Slott, he's going to be i think really determined that this season you know we attack both those big competitions and and really make a mark in both of those competitions obviously we want to defend that that bread and butter we want to win the Premier League again make it 21 but but there's no reason why we can't go a step, two, three steps, you know, better in the Champions League and make it to the final and win it.
00:19:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we're one of those teams, we're one of the clubs that when, you know, the first ball is kicked in that first game of the of the competition, we're going to be up there as one of the favourites and rightly so.
00:19:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
So... I think that bringing in someone like Mark Gahey, even though ah ah did mention in the previous episode that it may be that he's kind of,
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
untested at the at the real elite level. But I think he's got all the ingredients to make it, particularly if you've got someone like Van Dijk next to him. can only be a positive for him.
00:20:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll keep you updated on all the latest on that potential transfer.

Nunes and Lallana's Career Moves

00:20:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It does look like Darwin Nunes is a step closer to leaving Anfield.
00:20:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Uruguay International is in talks with Napoli to join the Serie A winners and join Antonio a Conte in Naples. You know, the club are also looking to offload Federico Chiesa.
00:20:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
recoup somewhere in the region of £90 million, pounds which certainly will be welcomed by FSG after, you know, that kind of early splurge in transfer activity from the club.
00:20:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know there is still interest from some Saudi clubs, but it does look like Nunes prefers to stay in Europe. And you can see why, you know, he's 25 years old.
00:20:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know he's You know, he's he's in the best years of his career. And so, you know, you you understand why he'd want to stay in Europe, maybe and Spain or Italy. Personally, think he'd do really well in Italy.
00:21:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, maybe that's what he needs. you know, sometimes you just have players who, they just don't fit a club or they just don't fit a particular league.
00:21:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it's not necessarily... a question mark over their ability. It's just some things just don't work out. And obviously this is one of those cases, but I do think that if this deal goes through, i think it's a good, I think it's it's a good thing for all parties. We will get a decent transfer fee.
00:21:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Napoli will get a... A very, very good striker who I think will perform in Serie A and give them this kind of physical presence with pace up front.
00:21:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's a good signing for for Napoli as well. In some other news, Adam Lallana...
00:22:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Announced his retirement from football as a as a player, I should point out, at the age of 37.
00:22:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lallana, you know, he joined Liverpool in 2014, played for us for six years. It was a Brendan Rodgers signing, but was under Jurgen Klopp where we really saw the value of Lallana.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was an absolute running and pressing machine. So he was he was absolutely suited to Klopp's style of football. and And I do remember quite vividly that first game under Klopp, a 1-1 draw away at Spurs.
00:22:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, you know, I know that, yeah, I think Jurgen Klopp said once that Roberto Firmino was the system. He was the Liverpool system.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think in those early days, those was early months, Lallana was the man. He was the system. And that in in that game against Spurs, Lallana was just... It was a man possessed, pressing, harrying.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
He absolutely ran himself into the ground. And I'll never forget the moment that Lallana got substituted towards the end. And he almost kind of collapses into Klopp's arms because, you know, he just...
00:23:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
just spent so much energy. And I think that for me is one of the abiding memories of Lallana because that just, I think, it just kind of encapsulated what he was as a player.
00:23:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he wasn't just all about running, really skillful player. But I think it was just a shame that a lot of his time at Liverpool was blighted by injury. But, you know, he was an important part of those Premier League, Champions League winning squads.
00:23:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Scored a memorable late goal, a late equaliser Old Trafford, you know, to to get the score to one one and to keep our then unbeaten record intact.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then we went on to win the league. So, you know, he made some really, really important contributions to Liverpool. And, you know, I think he was a pivotal kind of component of Klopp's time at Liverpool, particularly in those early years, you know, and and through to winning the Premier League and the Champions League. So it looks like he's going to remain at Southampton where he started join the coaching staff, which is great.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
know good to see an ex-red staying in the game. And who knows, you know, we may he may see him return to Anfield in some capacity or other.
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
