20th Anniversary Deep Dive into 'Lost' Season 1 Finale

00:00:50
Speaker
Hello, hello, and welcome back to the Lost with My Uncle podcast. We are your 20th anniversary deep dive into every episode of Lost. I'm Aaron DS, your resident millennial Lost superfan. And I'm Nick, the nephew who somehow made it through an entire season without spoilers, despite this show being older than most of my playlists.
00:01:13
Speaker
that's That's a good one. I like it. So the season one finale left us hanging, man. The hatch is open. Walt's been kidnapped. The raft is wrecked. How are you feeling about diving into some season two action? um Well, honestly, um still processing it.
00:01:29
Speaker
Like, there's there's a lot of things that happen. They blew up the raft, which was like kind of their whole goal with the first season. And now this hatch is kind of, you know,
00:01:41
Speaker
come into play and Locke's been losing his mind over that.

Listener Engagement and Spoiler Alert

00:01:48
Speaker
I'm so like, there's so many moving parts and I'm so excited to get into the second season.

00:02:19
Speaker
Some of us are experiencing these mysteries and the show for the first time. This is true.

Season 2's Premiere Episode Impact

00:02:30
Speaker
And a little fun fact before we jump into the episodes today. With 23.47 million viewers during its initial airing, Man of Science, Man of Faith, which is the first episode that we're going talk about today, is the most watched episode of the entire series of Lost.
00:02:48
Speaker
That's crazy. It's actually a crazy. and so That's an insane stat. I loved the episode, but i don't know if it was that good. Right? I mean, I guess, yeah, I guess it would be a really, you know, very big phenomenon.
00:03:03
Speaker
and Yeah. You know what mean. I do. Something like a phenomenon. Mm-hmm. A little musical reference there. that That one might have been above your head. that No, no, no, it wasn't.
00:03:16
Speaker
Don't worry. Okay. I love it. I'm hip. Don't worry. I'm hip. All right.

Discussion on 'Man of Science, Man of Faith'

00:03:23
Speaker
love it i'm i'm hip don't worry i'm hip all right
00:03:28
Speaker
Cool. So without further ado, let's get freaking lost with season two. Let's do it.
00:03:36
Speaker
So episode one, which I previously mentioned, called Man of Science, Man of Faith, is a Jack-centric episode. And sorry, Nick, but season two doesn't actually start where we left off with the hatch opening.
00:03:48
Speaker
Instead, the episode begins with... ah random dude that we've never seen before. Ever. Oh, who also has an insane accent. Yep. If the people of Lost were trying to make me confused, they succeeded.
00:04:06
Speaker
Right? like right But it's a very good it's a very good confusion. I i like the direction they're going. Just a random dude minding his day. You know, like, breakfast, working out, music. Like, seriously.
00:04:22
Speaker
Yeah, we meet this mysterious man living in what looks like a 70s decor apartment.

Intriguing Opening Scene of Season 2

00:04:28
Speaker
And the song playing is Make Your Own Kind of Music by Mama Cass, which becomes pretty iconic for the show and for the season.
00:04:36
Speaker
And he's following this really strict routine. He's injecting himself with something, and then suddenly there's an explosion. Alarms go off, and he grabs a rifle. Then something happens when he uses a control to readjust a mirror that allows him to see what...
00:04:51
Speaker
Yeah, and then we cut to the actual cliffhanger from season one. Jack, Locke, Kate, and Hurley staring down the hatch.
00:05:01
Speaker
yeah Now, the way that I see it is, why would you give us that perfect setup for something new and then immediately take it away from me?

Character Development through Jack's Flashbacks

00:05:11
Speaker
Why would you do that? Why would you do that, creators of Lost? i was I was very upset. I want to know more.
00:05:20
Speaker
I still want to know more.
00:05:23
Speaker
Yep.
00:05:27
Speaker
Yeah. And of course we have the Jack talking lock into waiting until morning to go into the hatch. Yep. and locks asking, why don't you want to go down there, Jack?
00:05:40
Speaker
Which led us into our first flashback of Jack is a surgeon. And then really most of our flashbacks, this episode centered around Jack, Sarah, Christian and other conversations around Sarah.
00:05:52
Speaker
So what'd you think of the hospital flashbacks this episode, Nick? And and then i'll also chat here in a little bit about the one sort of variable flashback that I thought was pretty interesting. To start, I was really confused why we were at the hospital.
00:06:08
Speaker
You can't really tell that it's Sarah at the beginning. It's kind of hard to, cause she's got all this stuff going on. um It's really, and it you it's even hard to, you know, tell that it's julie Julie Bowen, I think is the actress's name.
00:06:23
Speaker
um Yeah. ah It's really hard to tell that it's her. I actually, yeah i didn't realize that until like halfway into the flashbacks. But, um, that's what we find out is that this, this lady who has been brought into this hospital is his future fiance.
00:06:40
Speaker
And we had seen her in season one, but now we're getting a little bit more of that backstory. Yep.
00:06:49
Speaker
And it's Sarah who has the severe spinal injury. Obviously, we had gotten snippets of that story before, so it wasn't anything necessarily groundbreaking, but it was just kind of filling in the gaps to the story there.
00:07:02
Speaker
Right. And then also, Jack tells her father that she'll likely be paralyzed for life, but then promises her that he'll fix her. So classic Jack taking on some impossible responsibilities there.
00:07:16
Speaker
And then we get to my favorite character ever, obviously.

Foreshadowing through Jack and Desmond's Encounter

00:07:20
Speaker
Christian Shepard. You know, telling Jack, and let me tell you how to do things. With Jack's whole, you know, all the best cowboys have daddy issues again. Yeah, for sure.
00:07:35
Speaker
And then a couple of other quick things to mention. Obviously, Sarah's fiance is a total crap bag who, when Jack shares that Sarah will likely be paralyzed, decides to leave her. Yeah, not cool.
00:07:47
Speaker
And then the most interesting flashback is that post-surgery on Sarah, Jack is running the steps in a stadium and meets another man who is doing the same thing, running steps.
00:08:00
Speaker
And he meets him after he twists his ankle. And the man says, you all right, brother? And he tells Jack, and no, that won't be the only time I try to do that impression throughout this episode.
00:08:12
Speaker
ah He tells Jack... ah That really threw me off i I was expecting it to be no accident. I was expecting it to be clean. and if I was pleasantly surprised.
00:08:26
Speaker
Yeah, I actually landed it better than I expected.
00:08:30
Speaker
So he tells Jack that he was almost a doctor. And he says he is training for a race around the world. And they have a really fun conversation about Jack's girl patient. Because this man who we later find out his name is Desmond is kind of ah ribbing Jack. Well, it's a girl patient, right?
00:08:47
Speaker
And they also have some interesting dialogue about miracles, which ties into our science and faith theme in this episode. Desmond says, I'll see in another life, yeah? So I just loved this scene.
00:08:59
Speaker
um I really liked it. I thought it was really cool. I was really curious on why they spent so much time with him. And then you see at the the reveal at the the the first episode, you know, and once we get into the hatch, and we'll talk more about that too when we get there.
00:09:21
Speaker
Most definitely. Back on the island before we get back to the hatch, we do have an interesting scene this episode with Walt appearing to Shannon in the jungle, dripping wet and shushing her while the whispers are going crazy.
00:09:35
Speaker
But what in the world? No clue. I just know it was terrified. Yeah. Walt, taken from the raft, and now he's just appearing and disappearing in the jungle.
00:09:48
Speaker
Is he dead? You know? ah I hope not. Even though I've hated him in the past, I really hope not. I've come to like him. Yeah.
00:10:01
Speaker
Definitely one of the weirdest and coolest moments of the episode. And then back at the hatch, the majority of this episode focused on our survivors getting into the hatch with some

Mysteries of the Hatch and Mysterious Numbers

00:10:11
Speaker
other cool conversations around a few things.
00:10:13
Speaker
First, they talk about how the inside of the hatch lid said quarantine. So that was kind of interesting. And then Hurley asks Locke why he opened the hatch when Hurley was running at him, telling him not to.
00:10:27
Speaker
And then Jack asks Hurley for an explanation of why he was running and screaming about the numbers. And so as they head back to camp by firelight, Hurley also ribs Jack that he should go ahead and join up with Kate so Locke isn't making time with his girl, to which Jack replies, not really in the mood, Hurley. And then Hurley counters, really? Because usually you're like Mr. Ha-Ha.
00:10:48
Speaker
I loved this whole scene. I mean, yeah, it's the amazing, I think the the dialogue is fantastic. And i love the relationship between Hurley and Jack throughout everything.
00:10:59
Speaker
Also Hurley's line, life's not so bad. I mean, sure, the others are coming and every now and then someone someone blows up on you. i mean, i don't know where he comes up with this kind of stuff.
00:11:12
Speaker
But yeah Jack asking Hurley what happened and Hurley's honesty and talking about stopping them from opening the hatches. It was honestly, it's it's it's a nice change of pace from Hurley's kind of jokey personality.
00:11:27
Speaker
And then ending that scene off where Jack says something like, Hurley, their numbers. You know, and Hurley asks what it's called when doctors make you mad doctors make you feel better.
00:11:39
Speaker
Bedside members. Your sucks, dude. Yeah. Loved it. That was a great scene all around. And then back at the camp, Jack gives a rousing speech about how they're going to be all right, which is met with the usual acceptance from the survivors, except for Locke, who starts gathering rope and says, I'm going down tonight.
00:11:59
Speaker
So even after they had had that conversation, and Locke agreed to wait till morning. um So we see the Locke and Jack dynamic and the war really continuing to build tension. I love it.
00:12:11
Speaker
I thought it was interesting that Kate used Jack saying, ah live together, die alone, I think is what it was.
00:12:24
Speaker
And kind of used it against him and went with Locke. I was not expecting the switch up from Kate there. so But i am I personally like Locke better than Jack, so i I agree with Kate for once.
00:12:40
Speaker
For sure, yeah. I think it was the right thing there. And I love when Kate shows up at the hatch and tells Locke she expected him to be halfway down the hatch by now. And he says, I was waiting for you.
00:12:51
Speaker
And he has a big grin on his face. That was cool.
00:12:55
Speaker
And then he also convinces Kate to go down first. So she's lowered into the shaft, but something goes wrong with the rope. She falls. And then she's grabbed down in the darkness. And what a cool way for Lost to do this with the hatch light coming on and then going off after she's snatched.
00:13:13
Speaker
I yelled. I physically yelled.
00:13:19
Speaker
Yeah. And then Locke chases her down there. And i mean i mean, that's kind of what you have to do. i mean, is it a little insane? It's a lot insane. But, you know, what else would you do in that kind of situation?
00:13:31
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah.

Jack's Decision and Encounter in the Hatch

00:13:33
Speaker
The island does tend to bring out some extreme behaviors.
00:13:38
Speaker
And then, of course, there's Jack, who has been reluctant about the whole hatch thing, but had a change of heart after Locke and Kate went, probably more so after Kate went and followed them to the hatch, and now he has to follow them down to save them.
00:13:52
Speaker
And when he gets down there, the place is lit like a ah Christmas tree.
00:14:00
Speaker
Like, we've had electricity this entire time. on mystery Island. Right.
00:14:09
Speaker
And we get to the big reveal. Jack arrives at the bottom of the ladder. And after passing an area in the hatch, that seems to be very magnetic, Jack has a key around his neck and the key is pulling towards the, the magnetism of the area.
00:14:23
Speaker
The music comes back on and starts blaring the mama cast song again. And as Jack backs around a corner with all kinds of computer equipment in a room, He eventually comes face to face with our guy from the opening sequence named Desmond, who's holding Locke at gunpoint and Jack recognizes him. That quote, do I know you?
00:14:44
Speaker
That whole thing is crazy, right? Like, how do you meet up with someone like that?
00:14:53
Speaker
so smallest world the smallest world and lost like how all they were all at the air i mean i guess them all being at the airport makes sense because you know they all took the same flight i don't know why i was thinking that but that what a what a crazy like world right and then that's when the episode ends with jack saying you like come on i know Yeah, but it is such a small world. I mean, we saw it last season with the flashback to Sawyer off-island running into Christian Shepard, you know?
00:15:27
Speaker
here So many little connections like that. But when you think about it, that whole... I always forget what the actual phrase is, but like the points of connection between humans, you know, that we're only like a certain level apart at all times from other humans.
00:15:48
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, it's interesting.
00:15:53
Speaker
But yeah, back to you and you know your weight and them kind of teasing you at the end of this episode. Cue me up saying some old person phrase right now like, when I was a kid, we had to wait a week between episodes while walking five miles uphill in the snow to school.
00:16:07
Speaker
you know Pure torture.
00:16:11
Speaker
Yeah, i would have I think I would have lost it. um No pun intended. least I could hit next episode for these. That's true. And now you officially can because our new format allows us to cover not one, but two episodes weekly.
00:16:29
Speaker
So before you hit next on your mental remote, any additional thoughts on episode one before we get into episode two? Um... I really know. I don't think I i don't think i have everything. i think we I think we covered most of it.
00:16:42
Speaker
I will say I was really upset that we got so little about ah Sawyer and Michael and Jin and Walt. I was so sad we didn't get any of them this episode. And while I love how centric it was, and this might be a hot take, I thought

Comparing Season 1 and Season 2 Pacing

00:17:04
Speaker
while this was a great way to come back,
00:17:09
Speaker
right to to come back to Lost, I feel like this episode specifically didn't really... It didn't really satisfy me the way that I wanted it to.
00:17:24
Speaker
yeah that's fair. i don't I don't really know. i Because I think... I loved the episode, don't get me wrong, but especially since like we were talking about that stat how there are so many people that watched it, I liked the episode.
00:17:38
Speaker
And you were telling me earlier how it was rated extremely high, but I think I personally liked Adrift better. And I i i i will 100% get more into that when we talk about the episode, but I interesting i think it had more to give.
00:17:59
Speaker
I think this episode, the the first one was kind of beating around the bush a little bit, if that makes sense. No, it does. So, like for like, I don't want to say... I don't want to exaggerate and say 40 minutes of nothing because we did get a lot, right? Like, we did get all the the stuff with Desmond, and we did get a lot of insight into Jack's past, which is great, but I feel like coming off of the finale, I i expected more.
00:18:27
Speaker
That totally resonates. I feel like... I don't want to give too much away, but I do feel like season two starts off as a bit of a slow burn.
00:18:37
Speaker
Yeah. It definitely doesn't rip the bandaid off as far as the answers and and everything like that. Yeah. And I do appreciate that. Yeah. To a degree. But also i know that when I was experiencing it the first time, like i was just like, come on, come on.
00:18:53
Speaker
I want to know. Yeah. I got to know these answers. Yeah. Yeah.
00:18:59
Speaker
Cool. Well, moving on to episode two, which is called drift.

Shift to Raft Survivors' Storyline

00:19:03
Speaker
Yeah. and Episode 2 is a Michael-centric episode and jumps back and forth a bit on the island stuff. We still spend a lot of time in the hatch seeing Locke's perspective now versus the perspective that we originally saw.
00:19:21
Speaker
We also jump to the parallel time to sort of show us what happened with Michael, Sawyer, and Jin. He talked about how that wasn't covered in Episode 1. Right. Episode two kind of covers that where they were attacked by the those other people who we assume are the others or part of the others, potentially.
00:19:38
Speaker
Right. I mean, talk about a shift. I mean, seriously, we went from none of them. Like, I feel like this episode did capture a lot of that aspect with the the people in the raft.
00:19:51
Speaker
But don't just leave us in the darkness with Jack and Locke and and Desmond here. You know? Like, wow. where Where we went from ah gun being pointed at Locke and Jack pointing a gun essentially at Desmond, of all people, to these these guys trying not to drown.
00:20:13
Speaker
Yeah, for sure. And this episode definitely felt a little lighter on key happenings. Like i felt like Adrift was a slower episode, at least at least for me. I know you said you really liked it.
00:20:25
Speaker
I felt like it was a big step down for Man of Science, Man of Life. Again, it's so interesting to see how everybody, you know, enjoys different things and different things resonate with people.
00:20:37
Speaker
Yeah. But for time purposes on the podcast today, we're going to primarily focus on what happened to our raft crew, since we already basically saw everything in this episode that happened in the hatch from other perspectives.
00:20:50
Speaker
And then at end, we can chat through a couple of key happenings at the hatch. Yeah. So the episode opens with Michael screaming for Walt as pieces of the raft float around him, and he starts to drown.
00:21:03
Speaker
And of course, he's going... Walt! Walt! Yeah. Yep. And then Sawyer emerges from the water with a gunshot wound from when he tried to stop the others, and he pulls Michael out of the water and saves him.
00:21:17
Speaker
That's insane. The whole episode, I kept being in awe of Sawyer and his whole heroic vibe, and... Jin. Zero Jin until the very end. I thought he was dead.
00:21:34
Speaker
Nah, too early on in season two to do that. But I get it. I definitely see how you would feel that. Yeah. And I love how each flashback in this episode perfectly mirrored Michael's on-island and raft desperation.
00:21:51
Speaker
First we see him talking to his lawyer, then he's in a hearing with Susan's legal team, and then later in the episode just kind of talking individually with Susan.

Michael's Custody Battle Flashbacks

00:22:01
Speaker
Yeah, the...
00:22:03
Speaker
I think specifically the scene where he's talking to Susan's lawyer and he says, like, I'm his father. Like, that was such a, that was such a, like a painful moment there.
00:22:15
Speaker
Mm-hmm. So bad. Yeah, definitely. yes And then we also see Susan crushing him with legal papers at one point, basically saying, my husband wants to adult Walt.
00:22:30
Speaker
We're moving to Amsterdam and you can sign these and give up your parental rights or we can make it very difficult. I mean, the custody battle stuff is just so sad. She's basically taken away his son to another country and doesn't even want Michael there.
00:22:48
Speaker
you know And then they used these medical bills that she paid for him against him. Which was just messed up. Like, seriously messed up.
00:23:02
Speaker
And Michael really tried fighting it at first with his lawyer, but he quickly realized that he wouldn't be able to afford the legal battle. And then, you you know, in the later scene, we realized that Michael had agreed to let Walt go to Amsterdam.
00:23:15
Speaker
And Michael actually gets to see Walt before they leave. And that scene was touching as Michael leaves him with a polar bear, interestingly enough. Yeah. Wow. Yeah. didn't catch that.
00:23:27
Speaker
And tells him no matter where you go, your daddy... He loves you very, very much, and I always will.
00:23:34
Speaker
Oh my god. this This literally only makes me hate Susan. like that's That's literally all that this episode has done. Made me hate Susan even more. Yeah.
00:23:46
Speaker
I'm with you.
00:23:49
Speaker
And back on the island, Michael and Sawyer find a piece of the raft to hold onto, and the sound design in these night ocean scenes was just incredible.

Tension and Heroism in Ocean Drifting

00:23:57
Speaker
You have the lapping water... their exhausted breathing and ominous orchestra hits here and there and musical elements, right?
00:24:06
Speaker
And Michael and Sawyer, these two are just bickering like siblings back and forth this episode. ah Seriously, i it was it was nice after after kind of having a break from the show for a while.
00:24:19
Speaker
It was really refreshing to get some of Sawyer's banter back, despite having a bullet in his shoulder. And making all these comments and stuff like that while Michael is losing his mind about Walt.
00:24:34
Speaker
And then he grabs the bullet out of his shoulder after michael says after Michael says, you're not going to be able to do that with your bare hands. And then says has the audacity say, you got a Band-Aid?
00:24:50
Speaker
Yeah, that was crazy.
00:24:55
Speaker
And then later, as they're talking, Sawyer makes the astute observation that the French chick said they were coming for the boy. i think they did. So that was, you know, that was something all of us kind of realized at the end of season one in the Exodus third episode. That's who they were talking about.
00:25:14
Speaker
But he also, you know, does a typical Sawyer thing here and kind of rubs it Michael's face that everything happened because of him and Walt. Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of that.
00:25:25
Speaker
Like, read read the raft room, Sawyer. It's is not the kind of time to be saying that kind of stuff to a dad who's mourning the theft of his son.
00:25:38
Speaker
For sure.
00:25:40
Speaker
And then Sawyer sees a pontoon part of the raft and decides to go after it while there's a shark nearby them in the water, of course. But thankfully, Michael shoots the shark right before he gets Sawyer.
00:25:54
Speaker
Yeah, that... I don't know why Michael didn't just swim to the ah pontoon. ah Wouldn't that just make more sense? You would think. Well, because the shark was was after Sawyer because the blood.
00:26:07
Speaker
And then he scared me there. I thought that Michael had killed Sawyer.
00:26:14
Speaker
So... Yeah. Crazy stuff.

Reunion and Warning about the Others

00:26:19
Speaker
And then as Sawyer wakes up the next morning, with the sunrise revealing that they've actually drifted back to their island, Michael and Sawyer make up, and Michael says, it was my fault.
00:26:29
Speaker
I'm going to get him back. I'm going to go back and get my son. And they realize that the current has brought them back to the island. I feel like I wasn't very sure on how far they were out, or if they would make it back, really.
00:26:44
Speaker
ah hear you.
00:26:47
Speaker
And then right as they arrive and are walking onto the beach from the water, Jin comes running out of the jungle, looking absolutely terrified, covered in blood. His wrists are secured. And he's frantically yelling. And at first, you can't really make out what he's saying.
00:27:03
Speaker
you But we find out he's saying, others, others, others.
00:27:10
Speaker
So glad that Jin's okay. Really big fan of Jin. of I mean... I thought the others were really cool looking.
00:27:21
Speaker
Barbarian looking looking kind of kind of people. Yeah. These were not the people on the boat, though. You don't think that there any relation to those people? or I don't know. Because that's where I get confused. Because the others on the boat were so pirate-like.
00:27:43
Speaker
And these people are just like savages. Like they've been stranded. You know? Yeah, for sure. So it makes me think that the group of... Okay, I'm gonna i'm gonna go off on on like a theory here.
00:27:59
Speaker
Hey, go for it. I think there are two groups of the others. I think there is the group that the French woman Danielle's team had.
00:28:11
Speaker
And that's the people that took Walt. But I also think there's another group that has had to live on the island.
00:28:23
Speaker
Now, stick with me here, because I'm going tie Desmond into this. All right. I think Desmond was a part of the Rousseau group, and they quarantined him after some of the— after some of Rousseau's team started getting quote-unquote sick.

Rousseau is normal. Everyone else is sick. Quote unquote. So they quarantined Desmond to keep him okay. Maybe... No, I was going to say maybe Desmond is Alex, but I don't think that's true because I thought Ethan could have been Alex.
00:29:03
Speaker
Ethan is one of the Rousseau others. But then there's another group of others that are a lot more savage-like that are, you know, have resorted to, you know...
00:29:16
Speaker
whatever. i think there's I think there's like two groups.
00:29:21
Speaker
Yeah, that that very well could be. i mean, they definitely are different types of groups, and like you said, this new one is much more primitive looking, at least from our first glance.
00:29:33
Speaker
Right. It's just another cliffhanger, and we don't really know what's going to happen with Jack, Locke, and Kate either, so I mean, this show is giving me trust issues. I hear that.

Desmond's Role and Island's Mysteries

00:29:46
Speaker
So let's talk the hatch real quick from my perspective. Again, not a lot of new information as it was really just kind of a repeat on a lot of it and different perspective. But one thing I will call out is interesting was when Desmond asked Locke, are you him?
00:30:02
Speaker
And Locke initially replies, yes, but him who? are they talking about? And later we see knife marks in the wall indicating how long Desmond has been in the hatch. And it's been a minute.
00:30:15
Speaker
There's a lot of marks there. So let's park here a bit as we close out the first two episodes. What do you think of the hatch stuff in episode two? um I agree. Who is him?
00:30:27
Speaker
What is Desmond doing in the hatch? And why in the world? is there a computer that causes the hatch to beep where you have to enter the numbers and press execute to disable the alarm?
00:30:41
Speaker
Yeah. Which resets the counter to 108, which probably has some significance.
00:30:48
Speaker
Probably.
00:30:50
Speaker
Crazy. 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. Ugh. oh Also, why does Desmond think anyone outside the hatch would be infected?
00:31:01
Speaker
That's a question I definitely have. yeah And they have so much food in there, it's insane. So it's like they had to put him there for a reason. You know?
00:31:14
Speaker
feel like like and you like his his purpose of being in the hatch is so intentional. Especially since he's got that much food.
00:31:23
Speaker
For sure. I mean, it it seems like he's under the assumption that everyone outside of the hatch is infected with something, and he's quarantined. Because he was taking some kind of injection, right?
00:31:34
Speaker
you Yeah. That was probably something to counteract whatever he thinks happens to anyone who's outside of the hatch on the island. Oh, that's true. And then the whole computer thing, like, clearly he's there to do a job, and it seems to be related to that computer and entering the numbers.
00:31:53
Speaker
Yeah. I just did a little bit of math. Because it seemed like it was 108 hours. um which is four and a half days. I don't know the significance of that, but I wanted to put that out there just in case it comes back.
00:32:10
Speaker
Interesting. What happens if you add four, eight, 15, 16, 23 and 42? Oh, actually a really good place. That's actually a really good question. What is it? Four, eight, 15, 16, 23 and
00:32:30
Speaker
4, 8, 15, 23 and 16, then 23? 42. Yep. You get 108. You get 108. that's a good That's a good point.
00:32:41
Speaker
So maybe... So I don't know why he had to use the numbers then.
00:32:48
Speaker
if if they're If he's just adding... then if he's just putting in the numbers and it's just adding how how much time he's got, right? Why not just put in like... one and then a bunch of bunch of zeros yeah good question and then why does it what does that stop exactly right I think that's that's the answer we're going to be trying to achieve but the first two episodes were definitely a case I feel like of the writers milking the mystery of the hatch for as long as they could yeah
00:33:22
Speaker
ah agree But with that said, these two episodes really set up what looked to be the two main conflicts for season two. Obviously, we got the mystery of the hatch, which we all saw that coming. And then the new group of people, um the primitive others, I think is yeah the other piece here.
00:33:40
Speaker
the The episodes are very... They're they're polar opposites. First episode is all about underground but bunker. And then the second one is like the raw survival.
00:33:51
Speaker
out on the ocean, and I guess towards the end in the jungle. Yeah, that's lost for you. One minute you're in a high-tech bunker with a record player, the next you're fighting for your life on a floating door.
00:34:06
Speaker
So, like Titanic, but with monsters. Yeah. The flashbacks, I feel like it a little differently. I loved this episode and I loved Michael's backstory. and it It made me understand him a little bit more.
00:34:24
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:34:27
Speaker
Well, and and even Jack's whole I can fix everyone complex gets put into perspective when we see how it started with Sarah. Right.
00:34:37
Speaker
So yeah, agree. The flashbacks were definitely very... They hit very close to home and they were very emotional on both episodes, I think. Mm-hmm.
00:34:48
Speaker
Awesome. Well, any other thoughts on Adrift before we get into some of our other segments here ah i just here? I just wanted to say how much I loved it. i I really did like that. I think I personally liked Adrift better than Man of Science and Man of Faith.
00:35:04
Speaker
I think I'm just a sucker for the Michael and Walt dynamic. think you are, yeah. ah Because Special was my favorite episode from season one. I think I'm just a sucker for the Michael episodes. Yeah.
00:35:16
Speaker
I don't know. And that's all right. I mean, yeah we'll let him yell Walt a few more times and we'll see if he gets annoyed.
00:35:27
Speaker
Annoying. yeah He probably will a little bit, but we'll see. Yeah. Awesome. Well, it's time for Most Love, Most Hated. So this is the segment of our show where Nick talks about the characters who are trending up for him or resonating with him the most.
00:35:46
Speaker
In the current episode, and which characters are kind of on the but naughty list and not his favorite at the current time. So what do you got All right, we're going start with with most loved, because, you know, it's most loved. And I usually feel like those are or fairly easier for me. Yeah.
00:36:06
Speaker
I lied, this is kind of hard.
00:36:10
Speaker
I'm going to say...
00:36:14
Speaker
Okay, no, I'm just gonna go with my gut. Locke at the number one most loved. Sawyer at my never number two most loved. And Michael at my number three most loved. Alright, interesting.
00:36:25
Speaker
If I had to say an honorable mention, I would have given it to Jack. Yeah. if i had I lied. If I had to give an honorable mention, I would have it to Kate. Second honorable mention is Jack.
00:36:39
Speaker
That's fair. Most hated. i gotta go Susan. Oh, absolutely. I gotta go, Susan. I don't know if anybody else even needs to be mentioned for either episode. I mean, seriously.
00:36:51
Speaker
She's just the worst. Yeah. And I don't know if there was anyone on Island that would have really fit the bill for the first two episodes, because it was very targeted character-wise.
00:37:03
Speaker
Yeah. ah I'll put Charlie down there.
00:37:09
Speaker
no I lied. Shannon, then Charlie.
00:37:13
Speaker
I hated Shannon's attitude with, like, the whole, like, I was given this one thing with the dog, and now I have to, like look after it. And she, like, was almost, like, annoyed. And then was like, oh, but I have to do this for Walt.
00:37:25
Speaker
Mm-hmm. You know, i it's just I just never like
00:37:30
Speaker
No, that's fair.
00:37:33
Speaker
right, so most love for me. and This is not going to probably go down great for you just because the variance in how we feel about the episodes. So I think honorable mention for me is Desmond.
00:37:47
Speaker
Obviously Desmond wasn't in the episode enough to make it in either most loved or most hated for me. But I think that if if we were to get more Desmond in the future, I think that he could easily crack most loved. I just think he's a cool character.
00:38:03
Speaker
i do too. I actually do. i i do want to say that I also agree with that.
00:38:10
Speaker
And then my actual three for most loved, am going with our three hatch adventurers, Locke, Kate, and Jack as my top three. like that. I really like that.
00:38:23
Speaker
Yeah, i just felt like they they got a lot of screen time. you know i think that Locke obviously made the tough decision but stuck to his hunches about going down into the hatch and not waiting till mornings.
00:38:37
Speaker
And then, you know, Kate was there to support and and help out. Right. Even volunteering and then getting yanked into the darkness, still keeping her cool. Exactly. And then you have to give Jack props for realizing, okay, you know, it wasn't what I wanted to do, but I'm not going to leave them behind or in this instance, you know, I'm not going to let them go forward without me. And I'm going to make sure that I'm looking out for my people.
00:39:03
Speaker
Right.
00:39:05
Speaker
So I appreciated that. And then most hated. Yeah. I'm with you. Susan is in it. Yeah. Shannon's always in it. ah and Always. Charlie can be in there. I had completely forgotten about that interaction, but he can be in there for that. right others Other than that, there's really not anyone else that I could even think to put in there for this episode.
00:39:27
Speaker
Oh, you're most hated. most yeah outside of the Yeah. Outside of those. I mean, yeah Sawyer could easily slide into Most Loved. Except for the bickering between he and Michael. like That whole thing was was a little annoying at times, I think. yeah And then Hurley even could have been an honorable mention. like He had some really great conversations in the first episode.
00:39:51
Speaker
yeah and mine i missed him in the second one, though. Yeah.
00:39:59
Speaker
Yeah, I hear you.
00:40:01
Speaker
Cool. So theories and predictions. What's your take on the hatch and and Desmond's situation down there? i mean, we already covered that, I think. Anything else you wanted to add? I don't think so. I don't think there's anything else that I have, except that I think Michael, Sawyer, and Jyn will all become prisoners of the others. I think I'm glad that they're united, but I think they're going to, I think that we're also going to find out what happened to Jyn, or at least I hope so.
00:40:28
Speaker
I'm be really mad if we don't know what happened to Jyn. Yeah. Just like how we don't really know what happened with Claire. Really mad about that still.
00:40:38
Speaker
There's a slight chance, i'm and I'm not saying this 100%. It's called a theory for a reason. Yep. That Jin, Michael, and Sawyer are on a different island.
00:40:51
Speaker
If the others look different, there's a chance that it's a different island. Oh, I'm saying. Interesting.
00:41:03
Speaker
Very interesting, young Padawan. I love hearing your theories, especially since I already know what's coming. Yeah. But don't you dare spoil anything.
00:41:14
Speaker
Oh, no. I made it this far. Yeah, I wouldn't think of spoiling anything.
