On this episode, the very first episode of From Recap To Review, we review the remake of a cult classic movie, The Crow. This movie follows a main character and partially follows his love interest as a tragedy happens and spirals into a revenge story that involves life and death. Also incorporates some religious fiction involved and takes place in a dark setting as the original. Enough of that, it's time for some R&R, this is The Crow movie review, let's get into it.

Can a classic ever really be remade? The crow is back and is darker and grittier than ever.

The Crow remake: Revival or shadow?

00:00:11

But in a world filled with remakes and reboots, does this version breathe new life into the story or is it simply a shadow of the original? Let's find out.

2024 Release of The Crow discussion

Welcome back everyone. Today we're talking about the 2024 release of The Crow.
00:00:29

If you've ever seen the 1994 original, you know it's a movie dressed in atmosphere, emotion, and of course, revenge. The question I had going on is, can this new version capture the same

magic? Stick around because I'll be sharing what worked, what didn't, and why my final rating lands at 3.5. Actually, let's say 3 out of 5.

Also, let me know in the comments below what you thought of the movie. Did it live up to your expectations or did it miss you the mark? Now, let's get into it.

Cinematography appreciation

00:01:08
Speaker
Alright, let's start with the positives. Because despite its flaws, there are things I appreciated in this movie. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the cinematography.
00:01:18
Speaker
From the very first scene, you're hit with this moody, shadow-drenched look that immediately sets the tone. Every shot feels deliberate, and if the filmmakers were trying to make the environment its own character, they did a great job, because that's what it felt like to me. There's a heaviness to it, like the city itself is alive and grieving.

Engaging setting

00:01:43
Speaker
It's that kind of setting that really draws you into the world, much like the original.
00:01:48
Speaker
And then there's the color palette. The original crow was almost monochromatic, washed in blacks and grays with occasional flash of red or light. This version does something similar, but with a modern touch. The darkness is is still there, filled with every look in and corner, but the filmmakers added subtle color variations that give the film more depth without taking away from the grim atmosphere.
00:02:17
Speaker
It's almost like looking at a painting where you slowly start to notice the different layers. This modern twist feels like it's respecting the original while adapting it for today's audience. If that makes sense. What I found interesting about this choice is that it doesn't just feel like a stylistic decision. The city's look mirrors the emotional state of the characters, lonely, bleak, and full of unresolved pain. You can see the influence of this color palette on how we're supposed to feel throughout the film. And in a movie like this, atmosphere matters just as much as the plot.

Action scenes: Decent but forgettable

00:03:00
Speaker
Now, onto the action scenes. Here's why I had some mixed feelings.
00:03:05
Speaker
They were decent, no doubt, and there's a certain grounded brutality to the fights that I appreciated. No over-the-top Hollywood style is here, just raw, intense confrontations that reflect the states of the story. In a film like The Crow, where violence is often personal,
00:03:24
Speaker
right cause it is a revenge story. ah This choice made sense. However, while these scenes were well executed, none of them really stood out as memorable. They served the plot, but didn't elevate it. I think this is a double edged sword though. On one hand, it was nice to see a movie resist the temptation to go full on action blockbuster. On the other hand, part of me wanted a bit more.
00:03:50
Speaker
The choreography was fine, but I wondered if adding just a touch of stylization like any original could have made the fight scenes a bit more iconic.
00:04:02
Speaker
right A lot of hand-to-hand action is not ah in here. There's a scene with him using a sword, and then there's scenes where he's using guns. There's no hand-to-hand, so it's really kind of just shooting, and because it's yeah almost like the old West type of shooting, you know it's just, it is what it is. ya There's really no a Devil May Cry-ish, no mixed martial arts is going on in here, right?

New take: Grounded and vulnerable

00:04:31
Speaker
Lastly, let's talk about the new take on the crow himself. This is where I was pleasantly surprised. Instead of just copying the original character, they've given him a slightly different edge. He feels a bit more grounded, a bit more vulnerable, which made for interesting contrast to the nearly supernatural figure from the original and best believe the original is supernatural. Rest in peace. It's a refreshing take on the character.
00:04:58
Speaker
I think it was one of the film's smarter choices. It kept me engaged even though the other parts of the movie didn't. The original Eric Draven was almost mythical, a figure of pure vengeance. Here there's more humanity, more struggle,
00:05:13
Speaker
um It's a new interpretation that I think will appeal to those who want something fresh. Though it might not be what the fans of the original are looking for, it raises the question, can you update a character without losing the essence of what made them iconic? For me, this version almost gets there.

Critique of emotionless plot

00:05:34
Speaker
next Let's dive into what didn't work for me, starting with the story. I'll be honest, the plot here is a drag. For a movie that's supposed to be about grief and vengeance, I didn't feel much emotion from the storyline. It was almost like they were just going through the motions. There's nothing inherently wrong with a straightforward revenge plot, but this felt lifeless.
00:05:59
Speaker
There were no real stakes, no moments where I found myself fully invested in the character's journey. right um In the original, you feel the weight of air draping's loss. This drive for vengeance in this version, that emotional connection is missing. I think the movie missed an opportunity to delve to delve deeper into the protagonist's psyche. There is a lot of potential that It just never gets explored, instead the movie leans too heavily on style without fully delivering on substance.
00:06:34
Speaker
The script unfortunately doesn't help either. The dialogue between characters is often stiff and unnatural. Characters speak, but they rarely say anything of real meaning.

Stiff and unnatural dialogue

00:06:46
Speaker
it as it It's as if the writers were afraid to let moments breathe, to let the characters just feel. And when you don't believe in the relationships or the emotions behind them, it's hard to care about what happens next.
00:07:00
Speaker
One of the most glaring issues is the rushed love interest. In the original, the love story was the ah emotional core of the film. It's what made Eric's revenge or vengeance feel justified and deeply personal. In this version, the love interest feels tacked on like an afterthought. There's no real chemistry. There's no development, especially in development time. ah It's like the movie knew it needed to include a love story, but it did input the effort in to make it meaningful.

Remake lacks original's depth

00:07:30
Speaker
Finally, the biggest disappointment, the movie simply doesn't live up to you to the original. Now, I know it's tough to compare any remake to a cult classic, and best believe there's a lot of people that believe that it is a cult classic.
00:07:43
Speaker
but or just a classic. But the Crow 2024 feels like it's missing the soul that made the 1994 version special. It's stylish, sure, but without the emotional depth or character development, it's just not as impactful. What makes the Crow such an enduring story ah is the balance between style and substance. The original was dark and moody, but it had heart. It made you feel for the characters. This remake, while visually impressive,
00:08:11
Speaker
doesn't um And again, there's not like a lot of of visual animation and things of that nature, but just the looks of it is is very enticing.
00:08:22
Speaker
but it doesn't have the same emotional care. It's a reminder that sometimes no amount of polish can replace a strong script and well-developed character or

Final verdict: Visuals vs. substance

Speaker
characters. So the CRO 2021 is it worth watching? I say yes, but with some reservations. It's visually striking and the updated take on the character is interesting, but with a lifeless story, rush romance and punky dialogue. It doesn't quite hit the mark.
00:08:50
Speaker
but I'll let you decide. My final rating is a solid three out of five. It's not a bad movie by any means, but it doesn't hold a candle to the original, right? With that said, thanks for watching.
