Introduction to Prime Space Podcast
00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to Prime Space, a Prime Coaching Academy podcast with your host, Elias Couttori.
00:00:16
Speaker
How are you doing today?
00:00:18
Speaker
Ready for some exploration?
00:00:22
Speaker
Explore, explore, explore.
00:00:27
Speaker
That is the core of the coaching process.
The Role of Exploration and Action in Coaching
00:00:32
Speaker
Two weeks ago, I recorded the podcast, if you remember, on action and the importance of action.
00:00:42
Speaker
In that episode, I mentioned exploration is not enough.
00:00:47
Speaker
We can explore forever, but we really want to support the client into a movement forward, into the application of that exploration.
00:00:59
Speaker
But one thing that I mentioned in that episode is that these two things come together in coaching.
00:01:08
Speaker
We need exploration.
00:01:10
Speaker
We need movement forward.
00:01:14
Speaker
So because I spoke about action, I guess it's time for us to talk about exploration.
00:01:21
Speaker
What is so important about exploration?
00:01:24
Speaker
What is so perhaps even innovative about exploration when we come to the coaching process?
The Process of Exploration in Coaching
00:01:36
Speaker
In coaching, we say that we are not focused on the solution.
00:01:43
Speaker
Coaching is not solution-based.
00:01:45
Speaker
You've probably heard me say this many times.
00:01:48
Speaker
And we believe in that because...
00:01:53
Speaker
We put our focus on the idea that once the client is able to see their situation, their contacts more fully, the movement forward, the action, the answer, the solution, whatever the client is seeking,
00:02:16
Speaker
is going to come naturally.
00:02:18
Speaker
It's going to come as a result of that exploration.
00:02:23
Speaker
That's why we want to focus on the discovery part of coaching so that when the client is ready to set their next steps, they are more informed,
00:02:39
Speaker
not just with data or superficial data, but they are informed about the intrinsic motivators, what is truly happening below the waterline.
00:02:53
Speaker
And that will inform the action, the movement, the answer,
00:03:00
Speaker
in a much more substantial way that will support the client into sustaining that insight, that transformation moving forward.
00:03:15
Speaker
Exploration is at the core of coaching.
Expanding Perspectives and Understanding in Clients
00:03:18
Speaker
It's where we spend perhaps most of our time in the coaching process is to allow the client to discover that
00:03:27
Speaker
In this moment of exploration, I would like to point out two different ways to support the client in expanding their horizon.
00:03:41
Speaker
One is what we call exploring what is.
00:03:45
Speaker
Exploring their current perspective.
00:03:49
Speaker
So crucial to support the client in looking at how they are perceiving this particular moment and supporting them into going a little deeper.
00:04:04
Speaker
So, what are the important details about the situation?
00:04:09
Speaker
What are the feelings that they have around this, their current feelings, the intrinsic motivators that are propelling them to be and see and act in this particular way?
00:04:24
Speaker
What are their current perspectives?
00:04:27
Speaker
Definitions of specific words.
00:04:29
Speaker
This is such a simple aspect of coaching, but so powerful.
00:04:34
Speaker
The client talks about overwhelm or expectations or rejoicing or stress, whatever is the word.
00:04:46
Speaker
And we simply go and ask the client, what do you mean when you say overwhelm?
00:04:51
Speaker
What do you mean when you say rejoice?
00:04:54
Speaker
What is the meaning of that for you?
00:04:56
Speaker
That is such a simple way to explore the client into going a little deeper and owning that particular word even a little more.
00:05:06
Speaker
This exploration of what is can be really transformative and can really support the client to understanding their way of thinking more broadly and more deeply and support them into actions moving forward.
Techniques to Broaden Client Vision
00:05:27
Speaker
However, there is another way that we can support the client into evoking awareness, and I'm naming the particular competency here.
00:05:39
Speaker
And utilizing the words that we have in one of these ICF lists, I would like to point out that this way is to support the client in seeing beyond their current thinking.
00:05:54
Speaker
So yes, there is the exploration of what is right now, but there is the idea also of supporting the client into exploring beyond their current perspective.
00:06:08
Speaker
So what does that mean?
00:06:11
Speaker
So I like to say this is to move the client geographically.
00:06:15
Speaker
The client comes to the coaching conversation seeing the situation from one particular point of view.
00:06:23
Speaker
What are questions, observations, insights that we can share with the client that will support them into seeing the situation from a different angle?
00:06:37
Speaker
And perhaps imagine what could be.
00:06:42
Speaker
Notice the desires or the way they would like things to be.
00:06:50
Speaker
Their wishes, their goals, what they are aiming for.
00:06:54
Speaker
Put them into a different point of view.
00:06:59
Speaker
There are three ways that I think are very effective here.
00:07:07
Speaker
The first one is what I call time travel.
00:07:11
Speaker
Let's go into utilizing Star Trek lingo here.
00:07:16
Speaker
Put the client into a different part of the time-space continuum.
00:07:21
Speaker
So perhaps put the client in the future, or perhaps even put the client in the past.
00:07:29
Speaker
Interesting, right?
00:07:31
Speaker
Yeah, here's a way that the past can be very effective in coaching and perhaps it's subject for another episode of Prime Space.
00:07:39
Speaker
Let's say five years from now, well, where would you like to be?
00:07:45
Speaker
How do you see this situation happening tomorrow?
00:07:52
Speaker
How did you see this situation when you were a teenager?
00:07:58
Speaker
As a kid, what were your desires?
00:08:03
Speaker
Right, so right there, putting the client into a different time zone or time space supports the client into, oh, yeah, when I retired, this is where I want to be.
00:08:19
Speaker
then I will not have the stresses that I have today and therefore the situation is different.
00:08:26
Speaker
Oh, and that informs me on how to act today.
00:08:30
Speaker
Oh, as a kid, this didn't matter.
00:08:33
Speaker
What makes it matter now?
00:08:35
Speaker
So support the client into looking from different ways within the time-space continuum, for lack of a better term here, and be able to see the situation differently.
00:08:50
Speaker
The second way is to bring others into the conversation.
00:08:54
Speaker
So what does your direct report think about this situation?
00:09:01
Speaker
How does your spouse feel about this?
00:09:09
Speaker
What would Martin Luther King do here?
00:09:14
Speaker
You can even bring historical figures that resonate with the client in their particular context, right?
00:09:20
Speaker
And then you listen and pay attention to a language that is going to resonate with the client.
00:09:25
Speaker
But bring other perspectives, other people.
00:09:28
Speaker
What would your grandmother say about this?
00:09:31
Speaker
So you bring different personas and different individuals into the conversation.
00:09:37
Speaker
The client is able to say, oh, yes, this other person would see it differently.
00:09:43
Speaker
And I can borrow, I can learn from that other perspective.
00:09:49
Speaker
Another way to do this is to support the client into utilizing their own resources.
00:09:54
Speaker
We say that each one of us, every human being has three brains, the head, the heart, and the gut.
00:10:03
Speaker
Some clients operate more into the heart.
00:10:06
Speaker
They are a more feeling person.
00:10:09
Speaker
So what is the logic behind this situation?
00:10:16
Speaker
What would be the concrete step to take here?
00:10:20
Speaker
Or what is your immediate response to this situation?
00:10:26
Speaker
Bring the instincts of the client in that particular moment.
00:10:32
Speaker
Or if a client is much more logical and thinking person, bring the feelings, bring the instincts.
00:10:40
Speaker
So support the client to see the situation utilizing these other thoughts
00:10:47
Speaker
that they have within them to broaden the horizon for the client.
00:10:52
Speaker
So these are three areas that we can explore with the client.
00:10:56
Speaker
Time travel, the perspective of others, and these three brains that the client has.
00:11:07
Speaker
possibilities and reaches the repertoire of questions that we can bring to the client that will support them in invoking awareness and being able to widen, open the window of what they see and be able to then be more informed in the actions and the movements that they want for themselves after.
00:11:32
Speaker
the session is over.
00:11:33
Speaker
So I would encourage you, play with this.
00:11:36
Speaker
See what is appropriate in the coaching conversation and support the client.
00:11:41
Speaker
Ask questions about right now.
00:11:44
Speaker
Ask questions about their current thinking to explore their current thinking, but also ask questions that will support the client beyond what they see right now by perhaps utilizing these three areas that I just shared here with you today.
00:12:02
Speaker
Write me an email and tell me how is that happening in your coaching conversations and what are the results that you're noticing happening within your client system.
