00:00:14
Eden & Briana
so Welcome back to another episode of Miners of Mayhem, a true crime podcast that covers minors who commit murder. As always, we do not leave out many details of the murder, so at times it does get graphic and if it it's if it's really bad, we usually state that beforehand. We try anyway. Yes, we do try.

00:00:35
Eden & Briana
um Today we are taking a shot of rum chata. Mine is pineapple cream flavored. Mine is coconut cream. Alright, cheers to episode 45.
00:00:52
Eden & Briana
Why did that come out so slow? Mine did too. Pretty tasty though. Yeah, it's not bad. different Oh, regular Rumtata is wonderful in coffee. Oh, yes. Love that. So any news? Any got? Anything? I had one hell of a day yesterday. Yeah? Yeah. Why? I stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire. Oh, shit. The back of my rig was frozen shut. Oh! I had to find a rock to dig the ice out of the back of my rig so I could open the door to get to the spare.
00:01:30
Eden & Briana
Couldn't lift it up with the jack anyway because my rig is pretty heavy. if So my friends came out and saved my ass. we put this He brought a different jack with a longer handle. And i can actually if I have a longer handle, I can actually lift that rig up. But we get the spare on there. The spare's flat. Oh, no. So we air up the spare because I do carry a compressor. Big bulge in the sidewall.
00:02:01
Eden & Briana
Couldn't finish my job. I had to have them follow me back to town and call it a day. I finally got home at 4.30 in the afternoon and had only half of my day done. So tomorrow's going to be a bitch. I think my boss is going to come out and help me. Oh, that'd be nice. And bring me two tires because I won't run without a spare. Right. So I've got one of my rigs is in mine at getting new tires. It's not going to be ready.
00:02:27
Eden & Briana
The other one is down at the shop in Garrison, so it's not going to be ready. So he has to bring two tires for the only rig that I have running right now. Oh, wow. So yeah, it was a day. It's a cluster. It was a day. That sounds like it. And I was really fighting the jealousy program because my husband was on a snowball run and

Bizarre Crime Story: The Mother and the Suitcase

00:02:47
Eden & Briana
I was at work. Yeah. I was a little, uh, India's and I know that's naughty, but I couldn't help it.
00:02:54
Eden & Briana
He's out riding Snowball having a good old time and I'm freaking broke down in the middle of nowhere. And my mechanic was with my husband and my husband's gone. Those are the two people that I call when I'm in trouble. So I found a backup plan. So it was, yeah, so it was a day. So today is just, well, wasn't this week the week of full moons? but Was that last week? I don't know, but that would explain a lot. I don't know. This last week was just.
00:03:25
Eden & Briana
Awful, but I'm not gonna get into details on here. Just shit show. Shittiest of shit shows. Today's the beginning of a new week. It is. So we're just gonna shove the shit back in the last week and have all glittery, rainbow-y shit for this week. Well, until I tell you my true crime news.

The Case of Jason Gamache

00:03:49
Eden & Briana
okay what do you got for two crime news In Bloomington, Indiana, a 29 year old mother was arrested for boarding a bus with her toddler son, stuffed inside of a suitcase to quote unquote, keep him warm. Ashley Gibson say says that her two year old was in the suitcase. So the driver, oh, sorry, I skipped the, the driver of the bus heard Ashley Gibson say that her two year old son was in the suitcase.
00:04:21
Eden & Briana
so the driver pulled over. Video footage shows Ashley pulling her son out 18 minutes after boarding. Ashley claimed that her caseworker, quote, told her it was okay to leave him in there, unquote. The child who was wearing pants and a parka. Trial is scheduled for April. Was he dead? No. Was his child, ah I'm so confused. Why'd she put him in the suitcase? To keep him warm, but he was wearing pants and a parka.
00:04:52
Eden & Briana
So I think that is the most weird thing I've ever heard. Yeah.
00:05:02
Eden & Briana
i I can't get behind the logic of her thinking there. Yeah. I mean, how was it? I don't know. It was in Indiana and it's been really cold in the South. Oh yeah. They have snow. They have snow, but even in Florida, they had snow still.
00:05:22
Eden & Briana
But yeah, I don't know. Well, didn't Louisiana get like 10 inches, or was it Georgia or something like that? um Everybody in the South is getting our weather. Yep, poor peoples. I bet they're driving. Oh, boy. Bet they're learning how to drive real fast. Oh, well, on the news the other morning, there was quite a few crashes on the television. now it It takes a special person to be able to drive in that kind of weather. They've never seen or driven on icy roads and snow. They don't have a clue. They don't really know. They're learning real fast what it's like to be up here. Oh, okay. So, so what are we doing today? Today, I'm taking you to Courtenay, British Columbia in 1992, when Jason
00:06:18
Eden & Briana
Gamachee kidnapped brutally raped and murdered his six-year-old neighbor. His six? Six-year-old neighbor Dawn Shaw. I'm sorry you guys we're done. There will be no episode this week. I'm i'm out. All right. No. Yes. No.
00:06:37
Eden & Briana
I'm not going to like you after this. The community was shocked when information surfaced that Jason had previously been convicted of sexually assaulting children. um Jason had been well liked in the community and with no one knowing his dark past, it ain't no wonder he left them in complete and utter shock.
00:07:01
Eden & Briana
There isn't a lot of public information on his crimes committed or details of Don's murder, but I think Don's story deserves to be told. So, do you get into detail about his dark past? I do. Okay, good. I'm curious to hear that.

Crime Details and Psychological Analysis

00:07:17
Eden & Briana
On Saturday, October 24th, 1992, a group of kids were playing hide and seek at a condo complex.
00:07:25
Eden & Briana
Carol Shaw, the mother of three children, 10-year-old Anthony, 4-year-old Robin, and 6-year-old Dawn called them to come in for dinner. Anthony and Robin came, but Dawn hadn't. Carol started searching for her little girl, but came up empty, and that sparked frantic and fear. Neighbors came out to help Carol search for Dawn. When a couple of police officers were in the area, they took over and had people search the complex grounds,
00:07:56
Eden & Briana
um When Don wasn't found, the officers ordered people to search the playground by the school and the woods behind it. Not long after those orders, Lloyd, Duquette, Duquette, Duquette, kind of like Danny Duquette, I'm various.
00:08:15
Eden & Briana
Yeah. um Found Dawn not in the state they had hoped. Dawn's body was laying on the ground in plain sight a little ways into the woods. Her tiny little body was naked, full of cuts and bruises along with mud on her chest. Though there was also a muddy shoe print with diamond pan patterns on her face, meaning she was stomped on.
00:08:41
Eden & Briana
Later, her autopsy would say that Dawn suffered multiple fractures, including several ribs broken, severe blows to her thorax and abdomen and liver was perforated, oh um and died of internal bleeding. And the autopsy also revealed that she was sexually assaulted. How old was this kid?
00:09:06
Eden & Briana
not that not the Not the girl. 17. He was 17 years old. Correct. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police put a massive search for Don's killer. So let's talk about Jason. Jason was very friendly with children and seemed to enjoy being around them. People trusted people trusted him.
00:09:30
Eden & Briana
In fact, trusted him so much that he would often babysit for families. I have heard this case. Lloyd, the one who found Don, trusted Jason enough to have him babysit his two sons the night Don was murdered. Love it. Oh, yep, yep, yep. He stated, quote, I was in shock. It never occurred to me that Jason could be this murderer, unquote.
00:09:54
Eden & Briana
Jason, like I said earlier, had been previously convicted of sexually assaulting two four-year-olds in the town um him and his mom lived in before moving. Jason was attending sexual assault therapy um that was court ordered at the time of Don's murder. Also in Canada, there were no laws at the time requiring that those convicted of sexual assault be documented.
00:10:21
Eden & Briana
The fact that Jason is six foot one with a powerful build to him and was seen playing hide and seek with the children, including Don, police had their eyes on him. However, Jason just didn't seem the type to kill. Everyone who police talked to described him as a pleasant, mature, outgoing teenager.
00:10:45
Eden & Briana
In fact, while everyone was searching for Dom, guess who was keeping an eye on the children? Jason. Yep, Jason was. When police started looking into Jason's background, they found the sexual assaults from two years prior. He lured the four-year-old boy and four-year-old girl to his house where he asked them to perform oral sex on him.
00:11:13
Eden & Briana
The boy did what he asked, but the girl refused. She later told her mom, and that's how Jason was convicted. So he didn't murder those two? No. With this information, police interviewed Jason. He admitted to plain hide and seek with Don, but denied any involvement in Don's murder. Jason agreed to a lie detector test, and the results were that he passed with flying colors. What?
00:11:43
Eden & Briana
He was asked on nine different occasions if he had killed Don, and he still passed with flying colors. Police started to question if Jason was innocent, but there were no other suspects. It was all up to evidence and forensics to solve this case. They tested Jason's clothes and shoes he had been wearing that day, that dreadful day, detectives waited weeks for the results to come back because this is 1992. Technology isn't the way it is nowadays. Right. Meanwhile, Jason is just attending school and talking to neighbors, including the Shaw family, all while being calm as a cucumber. Just living his life, huh? Yep. Jason even helped a neighbor make and pass out pink ribbons in Don's memory. Sweet.
00:12:42
Eden & Briana
When Jason's mom straight out asked if he had hurt Don and his answer was, quote, Mom, I swear to you, it wasn't me, unquote. He even had tears in his eyes when he said so.
00:12:56
Eden & Briana
So his mom believed him when he said he didn't hurt her. When the forensic tests came back, the fibers on Don's clothes were matched to the black strands from Jason's tracksuit and also red strands from a rug in his apartment.
00:13:19
Eden & Briana
Remember the diamond pattern they found on Don? Well, that was an exact match to Jason's shoes. When detectives brought Jason down to the station to confront him about the findings, Jason broke down and finally admitted that he in fact killed Don. He explained the chain of events in a eerily calm manner. And mind you, he's a minor. So his mom is sitting in this room with him and he's just calm. No remorse. He lured Don into the woods to show her a hiding place that none of the kids would find. in case he did He forced her to undress and proceeded to rape her.
00:14:08
Eden & Briana
He said he planned to let her go if she promised not to say anything. But when Jason heard Anthony calling for his sister, Jason, quote, just lost control, unquote. To stop Dawn from calling back to her brother, Jason gripped his hand around Dawn's throat.
00:14:29
Eden & Briana
When she went semi-unconscious, he dropped her to the ground and started, quote, jumping up into the air and landing on her, unquote. And of course, remember he is a six foot one, well-built 17 year old on jumping on a six year old body. So a lot of her organs were damaged from him jumping on her.
00:15:01
Eden & Briana
According to Jason, Dawn's last word was mommy. Oh, I hate that.

Trial and Aftermath

00:15:11
Eden & Briana
hit that and hit that
00:15:15
Eden & Briana
hello Jason was charged with murder. It took almost a year to decide whether or not he should be tried as an adult.
00:15:29
Eden & Briana
however he was, oh thank god um but Jason pled insanity not guilty by reason of insanity. Jason suffered from multiple personality disorder and his lawyers argued it was Jason's evil alter ego, Carl, that killed Don. Jason was found guilty of first degree murder in April 1994 and was sentenced to life in prison with no parole for 10 years. So in 10 years, he'll be up for parole. Okay. Only three years of his sentence would be served. What? Because on February

Appearance Discussion and Closing Remarks

00:16:11
Eden & Briana
3rd, 1997, Jason was found dead hanging from a shower head. At first glance, it looked like suicide, but later would be determined he died while engaging in autoerotic asphyxiation.
00:16:28
Eden & Briana
which means the intentional restriction of oxygen to the brain for the purposes of sexual arousal arousal and to and the act is done by a person to themself.
00:16:43
Eden & Briana
So he dead. Oh my god. I can't sit here and say I'm sorry that he's dead. Me neither.
00:16:55
Eden & Briana
Wow. My resources for this case came from Wikipedia, Killer Kids Volume 5 and Ranker dot.com. And on Ranker dot.com they have the photos of um Jason, the footprint. um Do you want me to put that up? Yeah, we can. Yeah. We haven't put stuff on Facebook in a long time. Yeah. We've been kind of slackers. That's urine. Freaking Yeah.
00:17:25
Eden & Briana
It was, so this one was rough. So did, in the three years that he was in prison, did they do any more like psychological testing or anything like that? I think it was all done beforehand. And he was he diagnosed with multiple personality disorder? He was. Damn. Yep. I don't like you. I'm so sorry. That was terrible.
00:17:51
Eden & Briana
That to a whole little girl. Yeah, I had to take a break after writing what her last word was. You know, I was like, Oh, I got to take a break. That happens in a lot of them and it just breaks my heart. For real. And if you look at his photo,
00:18:16
Eden & Briana
I know you're not supposed to like judge a book by its cover. But I didn't look at his photo until after I knew all of this. And he looks the type. Does he? I'm sorry. But like, I don't know, like it's weird. Because it's hard for me to believe that those neighbors were saying he was fun and outgoing and Are you going to pull me a picture? You know what I mean? Yeah, I am. Gamache. Oh, let's see. Well, I mean, so I'll show you a picture when we're done. OK. Well, no, I want to see your reaction. Let's see, British Columbia.
00:19:06
Eden & Briana
Where are the photos? Put a rank here. Maybe there's a picture of them on there. Let's see. Okay, let me find it. I think it was this one. So there's the footprint. Oh no!
00:19:26
Eden & Briana
um yeah
00:19:33
Eden & Briana
And... They're really showing pictures, aren't they? Yeah. Where's his foot?
00:19:46
Eden & Briana
Ugh. Hold on.
00:19:58
Eden & Briana
Is that him? Yeah. Oh, I wouldn't trust my dog with him. He's got that... I mean, doesn't he? Okay, he's... Yeah, no. I don't... I don't like that.
00:20:13
Eden & Briana

00:20:56
Eden & Briana
trying to think. Yeah, we're going to get back to the video because it's really funny watching. I know. I know. We should really figure that out. So anyways, if you hear something, as always, say something. Keep your happy asses safe out there. Yeah, for sure. We love you. Bye. Bye.
