Eden & Briana: Jesus Christ. Oh, right. You should see this, like, you know, on the recording and it transmits. Yeah. It's really high. Oh, I could about imagine. Squealed my um my ears off. Coming from somebody I had to drag in the house, kicking and screaming because she didn't want to record because it's 60 degrees outside.
Eden & Briana: Can you blame me? I just got home from vacation and literally it was 60 degrees here. and then the next two days it snows and it's like 10 to 16 degrees. It's like, are you fucking kidding me? huh and Now it's 60 and I had to drag her in the house kicking and screaming.
Eden & Briana: We were having a lot of fun though. Yeah, we were. think broke my foot, twisted my knee and I broke two toenails. Yeah, you did. That's so weird. Well, I feel like my toenails are so hard that they're brittle and they just snap easy. feel like you should trim your hooves.
Eden & Briana: I did just trim them. On the soccer ball. and like them a little long. like them little long. Ew. I don't like it when they're like past my toe, like the meat, hu because then it'll hit on like my shoes. That's cringy. Yeah. So I just keep them like...
Eden & Briana: Barely away from the meat. Well, the soccer ball thought they were too long. Took care of it for you. Yeah. Oh, fuck. Shit. Sorry. Welcome back to Miners of Mayhem. True crime podcast. Get my tongue in my mouth.
Eden & Briana: Discussing minors who choose murder. I'm Eden, and I'll be your host this week. Joining me is my not-so-mini-me, Brianna. And I say not-so-mini-me because I'm a 5'2 smurf, and Brianna has been looking me in the eye since before she was a teenager.
Eden & Briana: Yep. How tall are you? I'm 5'8". 5'8". And you're 5'2". And I'm 5'2". So I have to literally bend down to give you hug. Otherwise, it's face in the ta-tas. Yeah.
Eden & Briana: So she's my not-so-mini-me. Eli is probably going to turn out to be pretty short too. Thank goodness. One of my kids. Just one. That's all I'm asking. Cause your brother six foot.
Eden & Briana: One. Is he six one? I think so. So six, one, five, eight out of a five foot two mom. Yeah. My last kid. I hope he's a smurf like me. Is Nova already taller than you?
Eden & Briana: She stares me eye to eye. i don't want to talk about it. And she, well, she's 16. So yeah. so yeah He's my last hope. Yep. My last hope.
Eden & Briana: So, what you got? Where you
Eden & Briana: yeah What are we doing? Shite. I guess I am going to Google
Eden & Briana: March.
Eden & Briana: You're either going to Google March you're going ask me what do I have for true crime news? Well, we usually do Yeah, I know, but it's the end of March. Yeah, we this. Well, we can still celebrate for a couple days. Okay, do it. Women's History Month.
Eden & Briana: Colorectal? Colorectal. Colorectal. It means get your asshole checked. Cancer Awareness Month, Brain Injury Awareness Month. yeah And Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
Eden & Briana: Aww. I like those. Yeah, there's a couple that ah kind of hit today. you Anyways, what do you have for True Crime News?
Eden & Briana: This is going to make you mad. God. Well, yeah. Was it as bad as mine? Mm-hmm. it We can't compare. Let's say this. It had the potential.
Eden & Briana: oh geez. Let's just say that. So in Seminole County, Florida, 37-year-old man has been arrested on 100 counts relating to child sexual abuse material, according to law enforcement.
Eden & Briana: On March 17th, Blake Edward McInnes was arrested on 53 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material 46 counts of AI-generated child pornography, and one count of possession of a childlike sex doll.
Eden & Briana: The investigation began January 27th after the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received 70 cyber tips related to downloading, generating, storing, viewing, and uploading of images of child sexual abuse.
Eden & Briana: The investigation connected his home address to the to the images, and a search warrant was served there on March 9th. Responding officers entered a house of horrors, according to the Florida Attorney General.
Eden & Briana: While seizing multiple electronic devices belonging to McInnes, authorities reportedly found girls' underwear, toys, and a childlike sex doll. McInnes also allegedly had multiple bedrooms and in his house decorated for children despite not having any children of his own.
Eden & Briana: For more information on this story and other crimes, you can visit truecrimenews.com.
Eden & Briana: See why I said potential? is another reason why i have an issue with AI. Mm-hmm. Not only is it taking away people's jobs, it doesn't challenge your brain. Like you can just type it in and it doesn't challenge you.
Eden & Briana: It makes everything just so easy. And us Americans, we're already kind of lazy people and we're just feeding that. Now you put this into it.
Eden & Briana: Isn't that interesting?
Eden & Briana: But kudos to um the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Absolutely. I mean, I'm glad they caught this dude before, know, anything actually did happen. Yeah. Like said, it had the... Well, we don't know for 100% that nothing happened. Right.
Eden & Briana: But as of... Right now. What we know, nothing happened. So that's why I said it had the potential to be bad. It's like they... Stopped a bullet.
Eden & Briana: That's creepy. Having multiple bedrooms decorated. And where would you even find a child-like sex doll?
Eden & Briana: Like, if somebody were to sell that, it has to be like Black Market, right? I wouldn't even know where to begin to look. Because if somebody were to sell those... That's just gross.
Eden & Briana: How would you be okay with that? don't know. I do not know. I have no answers for you whatsoever.
Eden & Briana: that stresses me out.
Eden & Briana: Yeah.
Eden & Briana: Okay. So what do you got for a case today? i have got one that made me jump down so many rabbit holes because of the time that it that it happened.
Eden & Briana: It happened in the 40s. Oh. And oh my gosh, the things that... Are we switching spots? No. no I don't know what happened. It just jumped out and bit me. So the information is pretty sparse. Like there's nothing really digitized on this case. Like as far as autopsy results...
Eden & Briana: I couldn't get them or nothing like that. But so we're going to go. We're covering from 1942 in Bedford Village, New York. Now, Bedford is located about an hour north from New York City.
Eden & Briana: It's a historic town known for its landscapes, colonial architecture and sparse suburban feel. It was founded in 1680 and was burned by the British in the Revolutionary War.
Eden & Briana: It's famous for his horse farms. I want to move there. Country estates and cultural sites. Got to turn my page.
Eden & Briana: So happenings in 1942, this is where all the rabbit holes. I wanted to rabbit hole down Bedford and the horse farms. Now I wanted to rabbit hole down this.
Eden & Briana: The happenings in 1942 included the United States fully mobilizing for World War II. Mm-hmm. The famous risky Doolittle Raid was launched on Japan.
Eden & Briana: Oh, it was so hard not to go down there. The Alaska Highway was completed, and war rations were issued for sugar, followed by restrictions on gas, shoes, and tires.
Eden & Briana: The Women's Auxiliary Army Corps was established, enabling women to serve in non-combat military roles. And daylight savings time was established nationwide. Interesting, huh?
Eden & Briana: Which they should be established. So let's get to the fashion. So as you can imagine, it wasn't that great. Fashion in 1942 included military-inspired suits with padded shoulders, knee-length skirts, slacks became popular, and shoes were restricted to no more than an inch and a half heels.
Eden & Briana: Clothing became simple and functional due to restricted fabric uses usage. excuse me Materials like silk, nylon, and wool were conserved for the military use.
Eden & Briana: Okay. I could have jumped down. Like, yeah. Yeah, that's interesting. There's even more. i mean, oh my gosh. So let's get into it. Are you ready? Yes.
Eden & Briana: I'm not, but here we go anyway.
Eden & Briana: So Edward and it, I believe it's pronounced height or hate, but it's spelled H-A-I-G-H-T. So that's what I'm going with.
Eden & Briana: Edward Haight was born September 19th, 1925 to Arnold and Georgiana Haight in Stamford, Connecticut. He was the second of four children. His siblings included older brother Arnold Jr., younger brother Preston, and young younger sister Charlotte.
Eden & Briana: Arnold, Edward's father, was a career burglar with multiple prison terms in the 1930s. Oh. Yeah. They didn't live in a stable home.
Eden & Briana: They had a history of living in quite severe poverty, really. And the information got a little hard to come by as far as events, but at some point Georgiana separated from Arnold and she was raising the four children on her own. Hey.
Eden & Briana: Now, whether this was because Arnold was in prison or because of other reasons, The information wasn't there, but they were separated. But however, on May 3rd, 1939, Georgiana lost her life in a house fire.
Eden & Briana: Oh. Mm-hmm. How? Dang it. There is no... Well... That's what I hate about old cases, but I love cases. love old cases, but it's just not there.
Eden & Briana: The fire was ruled accidental with no indication of arson, foul play, or suspicious circumstances. All four children were not injured in the fire. Following the fire, the four children moved in with their father. boy. You know, the career burglar. oh boy.
Eden & Briana: They lived in a two-room shack on the edge of a garbage dump in Stanford. Their living conditions were extremely poor. edward Edward was 13 years old at the time that his mom died in the fire. Okay. He kind of started exhibiting a pattern of targeting and mistreating females.
Eden & Briana: And at the age of 14, he kidnapped his friend's sister, bound her, and drove around on rural roads until she was so scared and screamed so hard and long that she actually passed out.
Eden & Briana: And then he took her home and dropped her off unharmed like it was just a normal thing.
Eden & Briana: You've got this look on your face. what do you got? Oh, my God. That's a little alarming. But, I mean... I wonder if he's taking it out on women because he probably didn't have a good relationship with his dad and his mom passing away. i have He's probably mad at her for passing away. you know no clue. i know Another one of his little shenanigans, he kind of thought it would be funny to put a snake in his teacher's desk just for shits and giggles.
Eden & Briana: You're giggling. It's not funny.
Eden & Briana: That's a little innocent. i Yeah, I suppose. But, like, the thing prior with the girl, like... I gotta take a drink. Then, yes, it would be a lot. But I could see Eli doing that. No, he better die.
Eden & Briana: Uh-uh. Okay, no. My brother... Brandon, i could see him doing that. Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely. 100%. Eli would never do that.
Eden & Briana: I don't know how many freaking snakes he had growing up as pets. And I didn't like them at the time. didn't either. And we had to share a bedroom. I know. And you had to share bedroom with snakes.
Eden & Briana: Wah. He used to torture me with them. oh well, you should have come and told your mom.
Eden & Briana: Okay. Oh my gosh. On with it. But that's kind of, that's funny. In a, yeah, it, yes. If it wasn't. If it wasn't related to this case, it would be hilarious. Yes. Agreed. it was a TikTok and that, you know, like. Agreed. Like that TikTok that's out there where it ties a fake snake to the back of the golfer and he takes off running. Yeah. just runs and runs it's tied to As long as like.
Eden & Briana: the teacher isn't deathly afraid of snakes. Well, that we'll never know. like, you know, cause a heart attack or something. I'm sure it scared the shit out of her.
Eden & Briana: So we've talked about the hate family and their living situation so situation. So we're going to jump on over and talk about the Lynch family. Okay. Okay. I'm going to take you on two streets here.
Eden & Briana: helen and margaret lynch were two ah for pearl Helen and Margaret Lynch were two of four daughters born to Patrick and Margaret Lynch. Yes, they named a daughter after the mother. It screwed me up and I had to check like 50 million times to make sure that was right, but it was right.
Eden & Briana: Okay. Usually it's the boys. I know it. But obviously there weren't any boys. Four daughters. No boys. I suppose. Patrick worked.
Eden & Briana: As a salesman for the Donald Brush Company, which produced advertising and specialized goods. Now, in 1936, shortly after the birth of their youngest sister, their mother was committed to Grasslands Hospital, which was a tuberculosis sanatorium. yeah Yes. Sanhaven.
Eden & Briana: Yep. Wasn't that a, that was a TB unit before it became as as a psychiatric facility, right? Yep. Yep. She remained there for years without improvement.
Eden & Briana: So the newborn was taken to live with relatives while the three older girls stayed with her father. Now the girls had to grow up quick due to their mother's prolonged absence and their father's demanding work schedule.
Eden & Briana: But when he was home, he made time to dote on his girls. The girls attended Bedford District School. Helen sang in the children's choir at a local church and the family developed a regular daily routine.
Eden & Briana: When school let out for the day, the girls would go wait for their father in town. When his day ended, they would pile in the car with him for the ride home and supper. Now their childhood was definitely shaped by their mother's illness and hospitalization, but they had a tight knit family dynamic centered on their father's efforts to to provide stability and affection despite all else.
Eden & Briana: The girls' early lives were ordinary in many respects, but marked by emotional strain of their mother's long-term illness. Right. And I did decide to touch on tuberculosis just in case, you know, because it's not as common.
Eden & Briana: So just in case some of you don't know what it is. Tuberculosis, often referred to as TB, is a highly contagious bacterial lung infection. And in the pre-antibiotic era, which antibiotics were not widely available until the late nineteen forty s So TB was the leading cause of death and required long-term isolation in specialized sanatoriums.
Eden & Briana: Treatment was basically rest, fresh air, and nutrition, and experimental invasive procedures that mostly didn't work. patient Patients remained ill for years.
Eden & Briana: And tuberculosis was widespread in the 1930s, especially in urban and working class areas, I suppose where you have a lot of contact with people. And it was... It's an interesting rabbit hole to jump into, but that should give you an idea of what TB was for those who didn't know.
Eden & Briana: And I couldn't imagine. it It had to be miserable. So on the morning of September 14th, 1942, near dawn, 16-year-old Edward Haight hot-wired and stole a Ford station wagon from a house in Stamford.
Eden & Briana: He forced a young woman to the side of the road, and when she asked him what he wanted, he said, quote, I want you, unquote. And he went to grab her, but luckily this young lady had a dog in the back seat, and actually I do believe it was a boxer.
Eden & Briana: And he protected her and proved just too much for Edward, who immediately retreated back to his stolen car and sped off. So the dog, kudos, kudos to the dog.
Eden & Briana: Unfortunately, it's going to be somebody else. Otherwise, we wouldn't be here. Yes, it is. So later in the day, he confronted two different teenage girls. But there just wasn't any information on those two incidents. So I'm not sure what stopped him from taking them.
Eden & Briana: Okay. I mean, considering what happens later, I'm wondering if people his age or older than him were just too much for him to handle. Okay.
Eden & Briana: So. Oh, great. Okay.
Eden & Briana: Here we go. Around 6 p.m. near Bedford Village, Edward encountered sisters, eight-year-old Helen and seven-year-old Margaret, who were doing their daily routine of waiting for their father to get off work and pick them up for the ride home.
Eden & Briana: Edward lured the young girls into the stolen vehicle, drove down an isolated road where he stopped to bind the two girls. Do you need a minute? No. Okay.
Eden & Briana: He then drove to a secluded location where he attempted to rape seven-year-old Margaret. She fought with all she had, which angered Edward, so he mutilated her with a hunting knife and strangled her into unconsciousness.
Eden & Briana: He threw her into a shallow stream, but she landed on the pavement. So he retrieved
Eden & Briana: he retrieved Margaret, continued to assault her, and ultimately drowned her. He then turned his evilness to eight-year-old Helen, torturing and raping her.
Eden & Briana: When he was finished with the assault, he threw her onto the road and kicked her head until it was positioned under the car tire. He then ran her over multiple times. He then dumped Helen's body in a creek near a reservoir.
Eden & Briana: Margaret's body he dumped in some brush, and Edward then abandoned the stolen car, walked home, and went to sleep.
Eden & Briana: course he did. Questions thus far? Gross. So gross.
Eden & Briana: I don't even know. Got nothing? Well, it pisses me off. What a freaking coward. Right?
Eden & Briana: So he is, he's a coward. Amen. A monster. An absolute 100% freaking monster. So Margaret's body was actually discovered the next day by children playing in the area. Oh, God. Dang it.
Eden & Briana: Well, of course, now I missed a lot because, like I said, that the the details are just not there for these older cases unless you, I don't know, tap into something.
Eden & Briana: So within 12 hours, an officer who had extensive interactions with the Haight family acted on a hunch and went to the Haight home and questioned Edward. Believe it or not, and the monster still had a gas ration book from the stolen car.
Eden & Briana: Huh. Busted. Mm-hmm. Edward immediately started confessing. He provided a detailed account of the abduction, assaults, mutilations, and murders. He cheerfully reenacted the crimes for the police and led investigators to the scenes, quote, like a schoolboy outing, unquote.
Eden & Briana: Pause. Pause. Okay. And showed no remorse for what he had done. He was even smiling. Okay, paused. Did you describe him as cheerful?
Eden & Briana: Yes.
Eden & Briana: Did I not? Well, he was smiling, yeah. And you said cheerful. Cheerfully. He cheerfully reenacted the crimes. Yes. Okay. I did say that.
Eden & Briana: He told reporters he had no particular reason for the crimes beyond a, quote, sudden urge, unquote, after rejections by other girls and women that day. I'm assuming that was the older ones that he couldn't handle because he's a coward.
Eden & Briana: Not that they deserve it either. There's one thing I have to say about his trial, though. And well I'll tell you when we're done. We'll compare it later. Edward was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder.
Eden & Briana: His trial began October 26, 1942, in White Plains, New York. Of course, the defense did what any defense would do. Insanity. They chased after the insanity plea, citing a childhood head injury, prior incidents, antisocial behavior, and psychiatric testimony, suggesting, suggesting quote, I'm going to screw this up.
Eden & Briana: beginning dementia praecox with psychosis, mixed type and statistic sadistic trends, unquote. And before you get the chance to even ask Brianna, dementia praecox is an obsolete psychiatric term for a chronic deteriorating mental disorder now recognized as schizophrenia.
Eden & Briana: Oh, so it's, is that still a thing? No, it's an obsolete term. It's now known as schizophrenia. Oh, yeah, okay. It literally means premature madness is basically what it meant. However, the prosecution experts and the court found him sane and fully aware of the wrongfulness of his actions.
Eden & Briana: The crimes were deemed premeditated and very calculated. Now, Edward's behavior during the trial was very disturbing right he smiled and sat twiddling his thumbs and when the prosecutor held up photos of the dead girls edward busted out laughing at the photos yep now i don't know if he was trying to chase you know trying to make them think that he was insane or if he's really that freaking like he acted like he was very amused and proud of his brutal crimes
Eden & Briana: So a jury of six men and six women deliberated for only 96 minutes before returning a guilty verdict. That was on November 6, 1942.
Eden & Briana: So he had a sentencing on November 17, 1942. And Edward was formally sentenced to death. Good. When his father tried to talk to him in the courtroom after sentencing, Edward shrugged his shoulders and said, quote, so what?
Eden & Briana: Unquote.
Eden & Briana: He was interviewed on the day of his execution and told reporters, quote, I was a fool. I don't know why I did it. I'm pretty sure this is my last day and I'm only 17, unquote.
Eden & Briana: On July 8th, 1942, at 11.06 p.m., Edward was escorted into the chamber at Sing Sing Prison. He remained stoic and calm as he was strapped into the electric chair, and he was pronounced dead at 11.10
Eden & Briana: This case absolutely horrified the public, sparking debate concerning issues of juvenile crime, family dysfunction, and capital punishment. Edward's nonchalant attitude and the family's criminal background fueled discussions about nature versus nurture and youthful offenders.
Eden & Briana: And I forgot to write any of this in there, but um Patrick did not tell Margaret that the girls were murdered because she was, you know, in the sanatorium and she was so sick.
Eden & Briana: He just figured it would add to her illness. add to her illness And then a year later, he died. He died in like 44. So she doesn't even know. I don't know if he told her later. i don't Maybe he told her like after the verdict or something or after it was all over with.
Eden & Briana: But he did not tell her that the girls were murdered. It was such a sad story all the way around.
Eden & Briana: So what happened to her? She died too. Did she? Yeah. How much longer after? I think she died in 1945. So like two years?
Eden & Briana: Yeah. Three years after the girls were murdered.
Eden & Briana: That's my case.
Eden & Briana: Trying to think of any tidbits that I might have missed. What year was he born? He was born in 1925.
Eden & Briana: yes He's creepy looking. Oh, did you find a photo? I did. oh good. Like, super creepy. Really? Save it so I can see it. I never did look to see if I could find a picture of him.
Eden & Briana: Oh, and the girls were just precious. Oh, they got pictures the girls, too? I suppose I'll have to put them on Facebook.
Eden & Briana: I know, but here's a he's a straight-up monster. Yeah, at 16 years old. How can I?
Eden & Briana: I'm trying to... Well, here. going to do it later. Well, I just want you to look at him. Oh, yeah, i want to see him. Oh.
Eden & Briana: Oh, where's the girls? They are... they are He looks so old for his age, doesn't he? Or is it just, did they just look older back then? I don't know.
Eden & Briana: He looks, I don't know. Maybe it was just that photo, but there's the girls. Oh my gosh. You're just cute. Look at them.
Eden & Briana: Isn't sickening? Disgusting, mate. Disgusting. Okay. Well, we hope you enjoyed this heinous crime.
Eden & Briana: Not enjoyed it, but you know what I mean. Jump down some of those rabbit holes, like sanatoriums and stuff. Yeah. That's so interesting. For sure. I got sidetracked. Like, I'd be trying to find one thing and then it'd be like, oh, squirrel.
Eden & Briana: And then I jumped down that rabbit hole. I want to tour a sanatorium someday. We do. Sandhaven's gone. i know. Makes me angry. I got to see it before it went, but I didn't get to go in.
Eden & Briana: Never got to see it, unfortunately. i want to go to that one,
Eden & Briana: that one where they Shanda Sher, that witch's castle. Oh, yep. That one. Yeah, that'd be cool. Yeah. With all of the, was it eucalyptus? No, that wasn't eucalyptus. was some kind of plants. They were all over there. Yeah.
Eden & Briana: don't know what they were, though. Yeah. But anyways.
Eden & Briana: If you have questions, concerns, case recommendations, if you just need to talk, um you can do so by emailing us at minorsofmayhem at gmail.com. You can shoot us a Facebook message.
