00:02:37

Yes. So what are we doing today? i already know, but for, you know, yeah for take two for take two purposes. What do we got?
Anthony Joseph: Early Life and Incident
00:03:01
Eden & Briana
Today's case, I'm taking you to the year 2019 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
00:03:07
Eden & Briana
anthony jove yeah Anthony Joseph was born around two thousand and two in texas Anthony's early life was awful to say the least.
00:03:22
Eden & Briana
In 2008, when he was about five years old, his father, Bert Templet, took him from the family home in Houston, Texas, following allegations of abuse against Anthony's mother, Teresa.
00:03:42
Eden & Briana
And the reason, since you're not asking, is why he was born around 2002. Anthony doesn't know.
00:03:52
Eden & Briana
He doesn't know his birth date. He doesn't know. and theyre And you'll understand why here in a little bit. i You know, i in my mind, when you said around, to the and in my head, I'm like, why isn't she saying his freaking birth date?
00:04:12
Eden & Briana
So it was in my head, but I just said, ah, you're on a roll. I'm not going to interrupt you. Yeah, it was there. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. For the next 11 years, Bert kept Anthony hidden from his biological family, including Anthony's half-sister, Natasha.
00:04:31
Eden & Briana
Anthony had no formal schooling, very minimal medical records, and virtually no contact with the outside world. Burt allegedly installed surveillance cameras to watch Anthony.
00:04:44
Eden & Briana
Modern monitored his every move through apps on their phones. So this kid was like, he didn't have any socialization at all. Like he was no isolated for since about the age of five. Yes.
00:05:01
Eden & Briana
To the age of about 17.
00:05:06
Eden & Briana
And once you hear his Schooling, you're gonna shit pants. Okay. Well, I hope not, but okay. Bert would give Anthony physical beatings, verbal degradation...
00:05:21
Eden & Briana
And had complete control over him. Family members would later describe Bert as volatile and domineering. To say the least. Yeah.
00:05:32
Eden & Briana
Bert's then-wife, Susan, would report escalating abuse that included punching her in the face, pulling her hair, and even knocking out her teeth. wonder if he's got little pecker syndrome. Yeah.
00:05:43
Eden & Briana
Mom. Sorry. Couldn't help it. So like I said, Anthony was very isolated, even after Susan and her son Peyton briefly joined the household.
00:05:56
Eden & Briana
By early 2019, Susan had left following a severe assault and obtained a restraining order, leaving Anthony all alone with Bert. Oh, mercy.
00:06:10
Eden & Briana
So let's get into the incident. The fatal incident happened in the early morning hours of June 2019. According Anthony, according to anthony Bert, who was intoxicated, woke him up around 3 a.m. m and started a physical argument reportedly on a phone-related issue involving his ex-wife. Okay, so Bert, the dad, was drunk or skunk. Correct.
00:06:36
Eden & Briana
Okay. and And it was 3 in the morning. Yes. And he sought out his son to argue He was looking for a fight. he was He was going through his phone. Yep. He was looking for a fight. Okay.
00:06:51
Eden & Briana
Found text messages between him and Susan. The ex-wife. Yeah. And started. Okay. Anthony then retreated to Bert's room, because it started in Anthony's room, to Bert's room, and Bert followed aggressively.
00:07:10
Eden & Briana
Anthony then retrieved a gun, and when Bert continued to advance towards him, Anthony fired three times, hitting Bert in the arm, chest, and head.
00:07:22
Eden & Briana
Bert stumbled into the bathroom seeking safety before he collapsed. Immediately after, Anthony called 911 on himself and calmly confessed, I just killed my dad.
00:07:35
Eden & Briana
I shot him three times, unquote. He waited outside for authorities, leaving the loaded weapons in the house. Bert was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.
00:07:49
Eden & Briana
He was placed on life support and died four days later on June sixth or 2019. Shite.
Arrest and Defense of Anthony Joseph
00:07:59
Eden & Briana
shit let's just shut that off real quick.
00:08:06
Eden & Briana
Initial police response, and I swear, if anybody says six and eving i go I'm going to scream because it says June sixth or 7th. 6-7. sixa she and me yeah Initial police response treated the case as open and shut.
00:08:30
Eden & Briana
Officers found no immediate signs of struggle supporting self-defense claims. And Anthony's demeanor was described as emotionless and detached, which obviously raised questions.
00:08:43
Eden & Briana
Let's see. The kid just shot his dad. Mm-hmm. He's probably maybe in a little shock.
00:08:55
Eden & Briana
Or maybe his dad is so freaking mean and has done so many bad things to him that he doesn't give a shit that he's dead. Or hurt. or And you have to think of...
00:09:10
Eden & Briana
Yeah. Keep going then. You'll understand why he was the way he was. You're going to tell me some things, aren't you? I am. And I'm going to get mad sitting over here And the police don't know about the kidnapping and... the stuff you're going to tell us about? Yes.
00:09:31
Eden & Briana
This is truly ringing Cody Posey vibes. It is. Truly. It is. I didn't... I thought that was a one in a million case. But... Don't get your hopes high quite yet.
00:09:47
Eden & Briana
Okay. Okay. Anthony... I feel a big butt coming. Anthony was arrested and was initially charged with attempted manslaughter, which was later upgraded to second-degree murder after Bert's burt's death okay Okay. Carrying a potential life sentence without parole. Bail was set at $1 million, dollars and Anthony was transferred to adult jail.
00:10:13
Eden & Briana
He was how old? He was 17. Okay. Okay.
00:10:21
Eden & Briana
And here's just like a little um side note.
00:10:28
Eden & Briana
Teresa and Natasha, the mother and the step half c sister, half sisterer they were outside enjoying the weather when they got a phone call from Louisiana.
00:10:40
Eden & Briana
They answered it and she she was asked if she knew Anthony and Immediately they were like, oh my gosh, is he okay? Or is he is he dead? Like, what is he okay?
00:10:54
Eden & Briana
They're like, yeah, he's fine, but he needs help. So just... And she carried the missing children's report.
00:11:11
Eden & Briana
like the poster in her purse for 11 years. Oh my. That just gave me the chills. That just made every arm hair on my arm stand up.
00:11:25
Eden & Briana
Oh. And did they know that it was a familial familial kidnapping? Did they know who took him? Yes. Okay. So she wasn't like,
00:11:38
Eden & Briana
she knew who She knew the father had... i do believe so. Okay. So it wasn't a stranger abduction. Yes. Because that um would be bad, too. I mean, you have that little thought that that's their father.
00:11:54
Eden & Briana
Maybe it's going good, you know? And I didn't put this in there, but growing up, Bert brainwashed Anthony so bad, saying, your mom's a drug addict. She's a piece of shit. She's dead.
00:12:06
Eden & Briana
Oh, no. All of the things. Okay. So as some do.
00:12:15
Eden & Briana
Defense attorney, Jarrett Ambo, who took Anthony's case pro bono, undercovered a deeper narrative. Interviews with Susan, Natasha, and others revealed the kidnapping, the long-term isolation,
00:12:33
Eden & Briana
um And just as another little side note, Anthony's education reportedly stalled at roughly a fourth grade level. And he was 17? Correct.
00:12:46
Eden & Briana
And he couldn't do anything past a fourth grade level? Mm-mm.
00:12:52
Eden & Briana
Oh, that makes my heart bleed. Mm-hmm.
00:12:56
Eden & Briana
So the long-term isolation and pattern of abuse that left him with severely limited social skills and coping mechanisms. Jarrett would argue that it was self-defense saying, quote, Anthony had reached the end of his rope and saw no other escape. on which Which if he had no socialization, he would have no idea what's out there. He would have no idea where to turn to. He would have, he's been isolated. Mm-hmm.
00:13:25
Eden & Briana
he wouldn't He wouldn't know what to do, would he?
00:13:29
Eden & Briana
i wouldn't think. Okay. I wouldn't think so. Okay. The East Baton Rouge District Attorney's Office recognized the mitigating circumstances, meaning the factors that lessen the severity of a crime, such as mental state, lack of criminal record, and severe...
00:13:58
Eden & Briana
Provocation? Provocation, yeah. Without completely absolving them.
Netflix Documentary and Public Perception
00:14:07
Eden & Briana
In March 2021, Anthony pleaded no contest to negligent homicide.
00:14:17
Eden & Briana
Negligent homicide. a lesser charge framed as reckless behavior resulting in death rather than intentional murder. Okay.
00:14:28
Eden & Briana
Anthem. Oh, I need to slow down. Slow down and breathe.
00:14:35
Eden & Briana
Take a drink. yeah, maybe. That might help. That might help. I need one, too. I'll wait a second, though. You can both hear us chugging in the mic. Oh, boy.
00:14:47
Eden & Briana
I was thirsty. Mm-hmm. All right. Anthony received five years of so of supervised probation with credit for about six months already served. Okay. Special conditions including obtaining a GED or high school equivalent.
00:15:05
Eden & Briana
Okay. Attend counseling and maintaining full-time employment or education. Oh, okay. Successful completion could lead to expungement of the record, ah which means destroyed, removed, or sealed yeah from the public record. yeah ok Assistant District Attorney Dana Cummings expressed hope that Anthony would become a success story, and Jarrett Ambo called it a victory against injustice, stating no way this could
00:15:38
Eden & Briana
this kid should be in jail. No way should this kid be in jail, unquote. Okay. Sorry.
00:15:46
Eden & Briana
I'm feeling a big butt. I like what the justice system did with that. I like their... we'll get there too i like that part of it. Like... but I literally write this here in a minute. I'll shut my hole. And i'll tell and you'll be like, that's exactly what I was trying to say. Okay.
00:16:05
Eden & Briana
In 2022, Netflix launched a documentary called i Just Killed My Dad. This is actually why I wanted to do the case. I watched the first episode and immediately started researching and writing stuff down and doing all things.
00:16:23
Eden & Briana
So now that I covered the case, I can officially finish it because i didn't want all my information to come from the documentary.
00:16:34
Eden & Briana
I wanted to do the research. uhuh And so now I'm excited to go and watch it. And I really hope I did it justice, but I can't say for sure, but you know, um,
00:16:47
Eden & Briana
a document. Wait a minute.
00:16:50
Eden & Briana
How big is the but that's coming?
00:16:54
Eden & Briana
Is it going to be a success story or a failure? Or don't tell me. We'll get there. Is it all caps but? Just one cap but or no cap but? Maybe just a one letter cap but.
00:17:11
Eden & Briana
Okay. And maybe be a capital U. Oh, maybe a two cap butt. Maybe. I don't know.
00:17:22
Eden & Briana
It all depends. Okay. Lay it on me. Let's go.
Rehabilitation and Family Struggles
00:17:25
Eden & Briana
In the documentary, it featured the 911 calls, police interviews, family testimonies, and footage showing Anthony's stunted emotional and intellectual development. Oh, I bet it was terrible.
00:17:40
Eden & Briana
It portrayed him not as a cold killer, but as a victim of neglect whose coldness most likely stemmed from trauma.
00:17:51
Eden & Briana
You just stood up every hair in my arm once again. The documentary sparked a lot of discussions on social media about cycles of abuse, the failures of CPS, and whether or not the justice system takes still developmental trauma into account.
00:18:10
Eden & Briana
I feel they did with this case. Yes. Okay, I'll shut up. So, following Anthony's release, he was trying to rebuild his life.
00:18:21
Eden & Briana
A GoFundMe campaign raised approximately $100,000, making Anthony able to buy a car, housing, clothing, and basic necessities. Okay, great.
00:18:34
Eden & Briana
Anthony focused on education, employment, fitness, and counseling as required by probation. Nice. Okay. Reports from 2022 to 2024 indicated that Anthony remained in Louisiana, staying out of the public eye while working towards his own independence. Okay. While avoiding contact with certain family members, including Teresa and Natasha, his mom and half-sister. Aw.
00:19:02
Eden & Briana
Anthony never directly quoted as to why he avoided contact with them. But it's probably safe to say that from the brainwashing and isolation for so long that rebuilding that relationship would be extremely difficult and emotional. I bet. Emotionally overwhelming. Can you imagine how hard that is on her, the mom? Oh, good.
00:19:28
Eden & Briana
Oh, shit. going to tell me more. Right here. Okay. Teresa's perspective in the documentary was that a traditional, traditional mother- son relationship was quote impossible unquote quote this is harder than losing him i want to be his friend because i know it'll never be a mother-son relationship that was the past unquote oh god that rips my heart out could you imagine not at all having your son kidnapped
00:20:02
Eden & Briana
Not knowing whether he's dead, alive. Hell to the now no. No. No. And then you get a phone call one day. 11 years later. do you know do you know Anthony? Oh my God.
00:20:14
Eden & Briana
Oh my God. Is he okay? Is he dead? Well, he just killed Bert. No, I couldn't imagine. And in her head, he's probably still that five-year-old little boy and she can't wait to run up and grab him in her arms. And, oh no, I could not even walk a mile in that woman's shoes.
00:20:33
Eden & Briana
But she gave him space and said that he was welcome to visit anytime, but did not push.
00:20:44
Eden & Briana
Yeah, that I couldn't, I honestly could not imagine what that feels like. And I don't, I hope I don't. Ever. No. Anthony repeatedly stated that his goal was to live a normal life, to feel in in control, be happy, and break the cycle of abuse in his family so he wouldn't turn out like his dad.
00:21:07
Eden & Briana
oh Anthony did live with his stepmother, Susan, and said that she was more like a parental figure than Teresa. i suppose. But he still cut off contact with Susan and her side of the family as well.
00:21:23
Eden & Briana
Yeah. After 2022, Anthony was open to trying to rebuild his relationship with his mom and grandma in Texas, but it was, quote, trickier than they'd all hoped, unquote. Okay.
00:21:39
Eden & Briana
So like I said, he was just working on his life and becoming independent, you know. I'm sure he had to find out who he was. Yeah, absolutely.
00:21:49
Eden & Briana
um So it all sounds great, right? Here comes a two-cap butt, right? Yes. Okay.
00:22:00
Eden & Briana
Unfortunately, Anthony had a setback. In July 2025, Anthony was pulled over for illegal window tint when officers discovered marijuana, an open bottle of vodka, and a 15-year-old passenger.
Anthony's Legal Setback in 2025
00:22:18
Eden & Briana
Oh, no. No, no. I do not know whether it was male or female. Okay. But regardless, Anthony was charged with intent to distribute marijuana, open container, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Mm-hmm.
00:22:33
Eden & Briana
unable to post the $75,000 bond, which would be $8,000 cash, in order to get out. Oh
00:22:45
Eden & Briana
my god. Where did it go? Did you lose your page? Where's the other page? It's in there. me see. Sometimes they stick together, stupidly. wait Hang on, hang on, hang Or maybe you flip two pages. Who knows?
00:23:04
Eden & Briana
What did you do? oh wait. Oh, yeah, this is right. Sorry. Yeah. Yes. Okay. Yes, he got arrested. Oh, geez. Louise. So as of October 2025, he was still in jail in point
00:23:21
Eden & Briana
yeah Pointe Coupe Parish. I don't know. Okay. His attorney, Jarrett, described the situation as a quote-unquote sad moment. acknowledging these mistakes while contextualizing them against his upbringing saying quote he has been given a second chance at life whether or not that
00:23:48
Eden & Briana
What the hell was I trying to spell there? um Excuse me. Oh my goodness. Okay. I just forgot the N. Okay. Quote. He has been given a second chance at life.
00:24:01
Eden & Briana
Whether or not that means a chance without mistakes is a bit of a stretch. Unquote. True. So it is a minor setback.
Reflections and Future Hopes
00:24:18
Eden & Briana
Because he went how many years um without having to fuck up? Well, he was still only 20 years old. How old was the passenger? 15. And if he was isolated, mean, I wonder if it was just like... Rig guard, yeah.
00:24:38
Eden & Briana
and Still naughty. You know, he's still trying to figure out who he is, too, and what... But i i I have a story two to like, okay, I was older than your father. hu Oh, yeah.
00:24:53
Eden & Briana
yeah I got nailed for contributing to the delinquency of a minor who happened to be my husband, who happened to be your father.
00:25:08
Eden & Briana
how what how old were you when you got married to him? I was 20. 20? 20. cool
00:25:20
Eden & Briana
it Yep. But yeah, I just really hope he learns from his mistakes and continues to thrive on his own. and Minus having the miner in there and you shouldn't drink and drive.
00:25:36
Eden & Briana
And we don't, I guess I don't know whether he was drinking. Maybe he was just transporting it. Maybe it had been opened earlier or something. Yeah. Who knows? Who knows? We don't know. But I still would have small-capped that butt because that is not anything that none of us haven't done stupidly. Out on the back roads, cruising the countryside. Yeah, but he got busted. And he's got murder on his... You know how many times we almost got busted? Yeah, but you don't have murder on your record unless it's sealed.
00:26:05
Eden & Briana
Well, I... have never murdered anybody okay well but they're giving him a chance and they're but the mistakes that was yeah like i said i really hope he does learn from his mistakes that was an itty bitty mistake dude compared to what it quote a lot of other cases turned out to be yeah yes absolutely so um and in how many years that was his You good. You good. No further public updates on the outcome have surfaced as of early 2026. So this one I will be keeping an eye on.
00:26:41
Eden & Briana
from Well, I hope for nothing but the best for him. I do too.
