Season Conclusion: Draw Against Brentford

00:00:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome in Wolves fans once again and this time we are speaking of course after the final game of the season has finished with a 1-1 draw against Brentford at home.
00:00:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not quite the return to winning ways we were hoping for before the end of the season but at least we did put an end to the losing streak that would have been a terrible thing to go out on.
00:00:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so, yeah, we've we've done it. We've we've made it through another season. The 2425 campaign is over.

Season Journey: Expectations vs. Reality

00:00:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if we think back to or if I think back even to where we were when we started this podcast in, you know, around preseason last year.
00:00:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
And at that point, we expected so much and we couldn't have foreseen the absolute nightmare that would await us for the first half of the season. um But to have come so far at this point and finish, whilst we've drifted a little bit after that winning streak and finished 16th, if you consider when Vissle came in, we were, what, 19th in the table and falling adrift of the teams above ah to go on and have at one point a six-game unbeaten winning streak, ah you know, just and and join and and suck other people into that lower-tier battle,
00:01:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah I'm a little bit sad that Man United have drifted above us, but Tottenham are still below us, even though they've won the Europa League, which is kind of random. But all in all, we've come a long way and it's been an absolute roller coaster.
00:01:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I am very thankful, despite losing a couple of places and losing a bit of money and Vissor mentioned his post-match comments that he's disappointed to have lost that couple of places. But overall, you looking at the big picture, it's been still a massive upturn and hopefully, you know, still so a lot of positives to take going into the summer.

Key Moments: Mistakes and Equalizers

00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we know it's going to be a massive, massive summer with a couple of big name departures seemingly set in stone pretty much by all accounts and all the stuff going on over the past week or two.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
For the game itself, though, ah once again, kind of gifting a goal to the opponent. And and that's the most disappointing thing. 8-Nori receiving the ball in a difficult area, not far from the edge of the box, but then kind of making a hash of it, giving the ball away. And then the ball takes some ricochets. It's a bit of a cluster of errors and just gives a really easy opportunity for Brentford to put the ball and in the net.
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so it it's kind of frustrating once again that that has happened. ah Sucks away all the momentum. um I mean, in terms of shots, you know, 18 shots for Wolves, 13 to Brentford.
00:03:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
uh it's a fairly even affair it's either side could have gone on and and won this game um but we've managed to keep outside of that one mistake we've kept them at bay for most of the game and so it is frustrating that that we've gifted them that but what i will say is that if we were going to equalize in any way and i'm so glad we did to get the draw the um The Minetsi goal, my word, as many people have joked, I mean, Sarabia needs to hand back his goal of the season award that he received because that is a possible, I mean, that is a contender right there. And I've been meaning say, I don't know if i said it in the last podcast where we discussed the yeah some of the award nominations.

Awards and Recognition: Timing Critique

00:03:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm always a little bit vexed at these, and I understand why teams do it because they want to give the awards away after the final game. But it does seem a little bit odd to me also that the ah nominees and the decisions for these game of the or like player of the season and but but particularly got things like goal of the season happen with a few games left to go.
00:04:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because there is still a likelihood like today that you could have a goal that would fall in to the goal of the season category. That is always for has always frustrated me since time began. um And I don't know if that's always been the way. need to check that.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at least for as long as I can remember, that's always been the case. The goal of the season is voted for before the season has ended. And it. just vexes me guys. And today has just proved why maybe that needs to change.
00:04:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maybe it needs to change. Not saying it would have won, but it definitely would have been a contender because my word, um I mean, in the end it was a, It's a hoof upfield. it's a It's a long ball from Agbedou at the back.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then it's one way. it's ah It's a nice little flick on from Larson. Manetzi, trusting that he's going to get it, makes his his run forward. And I think the beauty of it, the thing that catches everyone off guard is that he doesn't take a touch. He just absolutely wallops it first time into the top corner of the net.
00:05:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And so we, everyone is just aghast at that. And I'm i'm thrilled for him.

Player Highlight: Minetsi's Growth and Future Potential

00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm thrilled for Minetsi, I will say it, because I think i think he's done its an exceptional job for us since he came in.
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
He gets a lot of flack. I know he missed some chances in his first few games, some absolute sitters at points. But as they say, he's in the right place. Everyone talks about how much work he does off the ball.
00:05:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's true, um which I think has not always been as effective when Larson isn't in the team. Because I think he thrives off of creating space for him and his runs have assisted Larson's goal um frenzy as well in the in the last latter half of the season when when Larson has come good with a few more goals.
00:06:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it's no surprise or no coincidence that Larson has been Minetsi's been in the team when Larson's had his resurgence because it just ah it opens up the space for him and they've worked well together.
00:06:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
So very, very happy for Minetsi. And I think he will get a few more goals next season. and Whether he's a starter or not remains to be seen after what happens in the summer, the coming summer months.
00:06:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I think he will get more goals. And I mean, obviously, he'll have a full season. So that's probably stupid to say. But um even Vito Pereira stated again in his post matches that um he thinks Minetsi will get more goals next season.
00:06:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So clearly, he does think he'll be around ah to to in the team playing minutes to get opportunities to do so. but it's going to be it's going to be a massive one. It's going to be a massive one.

Transfer Talk: Semedo's Departure

00:06:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Everyone seems to be stating that the all are the press are stating that the Cunha deal is pretty much done. i think everyone has been for waiting for that to happen for months. um The most upsetting one is obviously the Semedo seems to be on his way out. A lot of discussion about the fact that he's recorded and ah farewell statement and And that people are commenting on the fact they've seen his moving people outside of his house and all those things. And in his post-match interview today, he seemed quite emotional um without actually saying goodbye specifically at any point. But um without so much as saying it, specifically saying it, his emotions spoke for him.
00:07:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think the oddest thing in relation to that is that the story came out this week, the Wolves have been offered, have offered a contract and have even offered him a four year contract that would have made him one of the highest, if not the highest, you know, ah wage earners at the club to keep him at the club for another four years, which for a 31 year old is astronomical and shows how much they wanted to keep him. Vittor wanted to keep him at the club.
00:08:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it strikes me as a little bit odd to be sad. um I know you can be sad to leave somewhere when you've been somewhere for a while, but to be consciously making the decision to go for whatever reason, whether it the contract isn't still, there's something about it that still doesn't suit him or whether just feels it's time to move.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Kind of, I don't begrudge him anything at all because I think he's been great for us the last few seasons and genuinely can be sad about leaving. I'm sure he's had a great time, it seems, with the club.
00:08:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
But so almost almost seems a little bit odd to be as super devastated about it when you've been offered pretty much everything it you wanted, it seems, in terms of a a long contract for the age he's at, in terms of a boost in wages.
00:09:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
But who knows? Who

Team Strategy: Future of Wingbacks

00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
knows? We don't know what everything that goes on behind the scenes and how much of it is actually true
00:09:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, I'm going to be super happy to see him go, but I'm thankful for his service, as they say. um But I do hope if he goes, and like we say, it seems pretty much done and dusted, um that there's going to be some activity in terms of wingbacks in the summer. There has to be.
00:09:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because whilst I think Rodrigo Gomez is awesome and has the potential, he's still very young, has potential to be amazing. We know he's young, but also... that I like, I prefer him further up. I think he's a great wingback, but I'd love to see him get an opportunity under Vitor further up the pitch.
00:09:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Although Vitor clearly seems to see him as a wingback. I know he's played elsewhere as a wingback in his young career. So I get it, but I think he he has flexibility. But we know he can play both sides.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then there's debate about whether Aitnori will stay or go. i mean, if Aitnori were to go too, as well as Semedo, then there has to be ah couple of purchases because Lima's still raw and Young looks amazing, but you don't want him as you're one of your starters.
00:10:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, probably next season, you're weaning him in maybe a bit more next season, but... Him and Rodrigo Gomez does not fill me with it like too much confidence as starting wingbacks. Obviously, Hugo Bueno comes back. He would potentially take a place if Ain't Norrie goes.
00:10:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
So you'd be looking at potentially Bueno and Rodrigo Gomez. But still, he still seems like you need someone with a bit more experience to come in there. On top of that, um well, all the speculation about, you know, another forward, maybe another striker.
00:10:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
If Kunya's going, do we get another number 10 of some kind?

Fan Sentiment: Player of the Season Controversy

00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sarabia's going as well. You look at the list of people going, you've got Sarabia, Semedo, Kunya, you know, potentially the eight Nori is one that's up in the air, but people keep mentioning that name. You're talking four or five players of starting potential, or at least in the top 15 players of this of the club.
00:11:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's going to be a massive window, massive summer for Wolves. And obviously Vitor needs a break. Obviously, as he's mentioned a few times, he came straight from Saudi Arabia and hasn't stopped and it's gone nonstop. So he's going to be off for a quick break.
00:11:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Andre will be very thankful for a break because he came straight in the midst of the Brazilian season and has been playing football for basically a year without a break, I think, pretty much at this point. So um there's a few players in there that definitely need the rest.
00:11:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think all of us are just praying and hoping that they get so they get the people out the door quick that are going, especially the ones that are for money, the transfer the proper transfers, not the freebies.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, they'll be gone. But the the likes of Kunya, if that's happening, do it fast so we can move forward. That's all we ask.
00:12:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's all we want.
00:12:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And clearly the public do want this now to just be done and dusted. And the nominations for the awards voted for by the public show you that.
00:12:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
The fact that Jao Gomez got Player of the Season for the from the fans over Kunia. Now, obviously, Jao Gomez is amazing and and a worthy winner of Player of the Season.
00:12:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
But arguably, Kunia, given all the goals, the technical skills we've seen at times and the and all of that, i i think if it hadn't been for all of this transfer nonsense and all of the Man U nonsense and some of the comments and things he's done on social media, he would hands down have taken that award.
00:12:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we as a ah public or the majority of Wolfenz that took part in that poll have chosen to make Jao Gomez win. the player of the season and snub Kunja.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And, and I'm, I don't get wrong. I prefer Jao Gomez as a, as an all round player for us. I think he's, he's fantastic. And so I'm worthy winner, but the fan base is saying, look, we don't like the actions. We don't like what's happening.
00:13:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to vote against you and proven. When I say proven, because it's also mentioned in the goal of the season. You look at the goal the season, I think about eight of the nominations for goal of the season were Kunja goals.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sarabia only think I had one nomination and he wins it over the eight odd worldies that Kunya's got in there is a clear snub from the public of we don't want this anymore we just want it done and dusted so please get it done and dusted so Wolverhampton Wanderers can move on we can move on with the future because most of that unbeaten run a lot of it happened without Kunya in the team didn't if you think back a lot of it happened without Kunya he was suspended and so they have played better as a team and they potentially could next season
00:14:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
with the right additions to make up for the ones we're losing this summer. But there you go. There you go. I'm going to drop a quick message before we go into any further thoughts.
00:14:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Anyway, so it's been a roller coaster and the 1-1 draw, little bit frustrating, but I'm glad that we didn't go out with the last as mentioned. And as we've just spoken about, it's going to be a massive summer.
00:15:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to be very sad to see some of these people go.

Player Contributions: Sarabia's Role and Future

00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Sarabia, again, i would love personally to stay despite his poor performance in the last uh the game against palace uh which i don't think suited him at all and and he's been more of a super sub for us if anything if you think back through most of serabi's reign with this most of his impressive moments have come as a super sub which i think at his age is arguably not a bad spot for him given his pace as well
00:15:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah to come on later in the game when other people are a bit more tired and be able to pick out space and and create those opportunities and those magic moments but again ah he is like the highest earner at the moment and uh outside of the general infrastructure of the rest of them by all accounts so i will be sad to see him go it seems again written in the written in the stars, as they say.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
But Paul went out for Sarabia. He's been, in ah I think he's been great. And again, he's got, through he's been critical for us in some key moments when the pressure's been on. And more than once, if you think back to moments under Lopetegui when he came in and now under Vito Pereira,
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
in in some games that have really mattered in both those periods when we've been battling against relegation, Sarabia came up with the with the goods when needed. And there's other people of you know, there's other people that did not, let's just say that. There's other people that didn't stand up and be counted at moments when Sarabia did. So at least he didn't shy away and he stuck it, he stuck in it and got some precious points at times.
00:16:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that goal against Tottenham ah from, was it last season or the season before? I mean, go down, go down in Wolves history as just one of the most beautiful goals I've ever, ever seen.
00:17:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
i might just go and watch it again after this podcast. Anyway, so I'm speaking to you today. um as I record this, it is Sunday night after the game. so if I sound a little bit tired and exhausted, I've had a couple of yawns.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's because it is, it is late and it is the same day and it's been, it's been quite the ride everyone. And, uh, I'm just happy that we made it through another season. I'm sure we will speak again very soon, maybe not quite as regularly in the post in the off season, but whenever there's news or stuff going on, will try and check in and give you updates along with the rest of the team.
00:17:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll go through our postseason thoughts and our own players of the season and goals and all that kind of jazz. It's going to be great, hopefully. um But it's been an absolute pleasure, ladies and gentlemen. I just wanted to say that to um have started this podcast last summer and made it through the full season in one way or another.

00:18:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you. And as we look to the summer, and we hope that the departure of the likes of Kunya and Semedo and Sarabia don't leave us in too much darkness.
00:18:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's just remember that out of that darkness, cometh light. Thanks everyone, and I'll i'll see you soon.
