Match Reflection: Wolves vs. Everton

00:00:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
Welcome in Wolves fans, it is Chris with you once again here at GSP and Daily Wolves and I am here flying solo tonight responding with some thoughts to the most recent game against Everton and I'm sure there's some people out there maybe a little bit frustrated but I have to say I feel like it's um it's a good point so it's a good 1-1 draw i think I would like to think, well, I don't like to think because we want to be winning as many games as possible, but I think most of us would have taken a point prior to kickoff of this game, knowing the form that Everton have been in since David Moyes took the helm.
00:00:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
What was it unbeaten in seven before that game? Now unbeaten in eight. Um, been really really solid under him really well structured and they're on a great run of form i know they're only one place above us in the league but like 10 points ahead and most of that is all in this resurgent run that they've had so given the form they're under i think it's a decent draw and i think as pereira mentioned in his post-match interview it's another sign of the consistency maybe not the full three points that he wanted
00:01:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
But continued improvement, continued consistency in the performances

Wolves' Defensive Challenges and Improvements

00:01:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
we've been seeing. Because even whether we've been... Sinti came in, i know we've had some losses still, and it's not been week-in, week-out success.
00:01:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But admittedly, we've played some tough teams in that period, and the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle and so on. But overall performances, I think, have improved. And if you think about the amount of... Think back to that Bournemouth Cup game last week where we went 120-odd minutes...
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
and only conceded the one goal. And yet, it's ah we've had so many corners against us in that game, and we didn't concede from any of those corner situations. If you think to how many set pieces we've conceded from in the first part of the season, it shows you the improvements overall, and that was without Agbadoo and the team.
00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Agbedou comes back in this week, recovered from injury finally, and I thought he was outstanding again. He makes all the difference. um I just thought he was as solid as a rock once more and put in some some great ah clearances, and he's just always in, seems to be in the right place.
00:02:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he's just so assured and confident. So that was massive. But even without him, we showed improvements last week with Bueno in the middle. um ah But obviously Agpadu is who we want there. But I think overall what I'm trying to say is that you can see, you think about the goals we were leaking before, the consistency and improvement in defense as a unit is massive.
00:02:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Obviously, the flip side to that is we're not scoring as many as we were first part of the season. But if anything, you you know you can't win a game without clean sheets or without you know at least Keeping that that ratio down.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's the the lesser of two evils, I suppose. It's it's better to be improving defensively and then working on the goals up front, particularly with Kuna in suspension.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I thought there were still opportunities to win that game. We had so much possession at points, particularly second half, where Everton really kind of battened down the hatches, showed that what Moyes has created in making them rigid and structured.

Key Players and Strategic Plays

00:03:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they really just, you know, lined all the bodies behind the ball and said, you know, break us down.
00:03:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we did struggle a bit to break them down. ah But before we break into the second half, let's look back at the first, that opening goal, It was frustrating a little bit, um I think partly because we speak about the defensive consistency and therefore it's kind of proven again in the one goal they scored, because I thought even Saar had a great game overall, was actually had an element of fluke about it because it's deflected. It's deflected off Gomez's leg as he's come across to help dock.
00:04:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
block the shot and it clips his leg and that's kind of what flips it slightly over Saar's arm out of his reach so although it was still a decent move I think there was two you know there's two defenders in his way and one of them has come across and it and it's a wicked deflection that So Kasar overall had a gate a good game. I thought he commanded his box well. He came out for some crosses nice and early and ah some maintained control of his box really well and one great stop in the second half.
00:04:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
So without the deflection, maybe he would have been able to get a hand on that because, you know, it could have gone anywhere else. But so So that was a little bit unfortunate, but it just goes to show that it took ah deflected go it took a deflection to beat Saar, to beat our defensive unit.
00:04:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
And after that, I know they had a break in the second half where they they could have taken all the points, but once again, Saar... had ah had ah a good moment and and did what he needed to do because he is a good shot stopper.
00:05:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Agbedou chasing back forced um forced the striker into making the decision to strike it as quickly as he did without really doing doing much to it. um So overall, I thought first half...
00:05:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
was fairly even. was a little bit, it was frustrating to go down to ah a little bit of a deflected goal. However, we fought back well. We showed commitment considering how many games we've lost this season when we've gone behind initially.
00:05:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We showed good improvements again to come back, get the equalizing goal. And heaven, Praise be, people. Praise be. Minetsi. Minetsi's off the mark.
00:05:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
All those missed chances in recent games. And I'm so happy for him. So happy to hush some of the doubters that's ah that he finally got his goal.
00:05:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Hopefully it just helps with his overall... finishing going forward. I was a little bit surprised that some there was so many midfielders packed into the formation, Kunye being out, and that we were told in the press conference before the game that, you know, Gedge was going to be available again. ah Huang was available again. Larson obviously available.
00:06:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
That all these people were coming back into fitness. Rodrigo Gomez available again. But Gomez was on the bench. Gage was on the bench. And we saw, you know, we saw Minetzi, Bellegarde in there along with the anchors of...
00:06:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Gomez and Andre. So you've got like four midfielders, but this time, Menetze at least is not a false nine. You've got Larson up front. However, however, Larson being up front and Menetze being a bit deeper allowed him to do the Dave Edwards role, the Menetze Edwards role of breaking into the box and the goal, the equalizing goal.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
There was a few great involvements in it. Bellegarde, beautiful pass to play Minetzi in, nice through ball. And it was the run of Larson because he does do a lot off the ball as well. um And I know people moan that he doesn't hold up the ball well enough, but him being there and Minetzi being a little bit deeper, it's Larson's run that forces the defender to to make a decision about where to go. And it opens up the gap just enough for that through ball to allow Minetzi to storm in a little bit later into the box.
00:07:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
than when he's playing the false nine role. And it allows him that, and it's just a toe poke really. and But it's the speed of the movement. It's the speed of the transition that the enables it to just get past Pickford, even though it's not there's not much to the finish. It's the speed of the overall movement. And it makes the makes the whole thing just happen fluidly. The the run of Larson to open up the gap, to allow Minetsi to run in the box and then the quick finish off Bellegarde's through ball.
00:07:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
So three players um involved in that in that one moment. Bellegarde continuing his improved form since in the last few games since Pereira's kind of like rejuvenated him into this more central role that he kind of floats around in.
00:08:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Minetzi, bit further back in midfield where he wants to be, but playing running being allowed to run into the box. And so I'm so happy that he finally got his goal.

Second Half Analysis and Player Impact

00:08:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was interesting that he went off at halftime, apparently picked up a bit of a knock and they're playing it safe, took him off at halftime.
00:08:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so Sarabia came on for so the second half. And I thought Sarabia's second half had a really good game. Again, he gets a lot of criticism, especially, you know, his reputation, given the wages he's on, given where he came from, um you know, and his strength. But I thought he was heavily involved in second half when Everton was sat back a lot more and we had all the possession.
00:08:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
He actually had the most passes in the final third of any player in the game, and he only played one half of football. So that shows you how much he was involved, how much he was getting forward, and how much he was like trying to create things for people.
00:09:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I almost feel that he was suited to that second half of the game very well, even though maybe he was came on a bit earlier than anticipated with the Minetsi injury. The fact that Everton were kind of just almost doing the low block and saying, break us down. Sarabia is built for that in terms of...
00:09:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
his ability to find pockets of space and try and play people in. And it never quite came off because the Everton did really work well as a defensive unit, but he did create a few opportunities.
00:09:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if it wasn't for a few, you know, ah dodgy free kicks conceded to stop him in his flow, ah then it could have been a different matter because I thought he had a great game ah for his second half of football that he was allowed So overall, though, i thought um he had ah he had a great time.
00:09:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Before we continue a bit further into the game, let's just take a quick message, people, shall we?
00:10:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Indeed. So yeah, second half, we kind of huffed and puffed a lot, had a lot of possession. Not many clear cut chances, even though we did have, in terms of stats, even though we had more possession.
00:10:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
i mean, we had 65% possession to Everton's 35 overall across the game. Most that being the second half dominance. And yet the XG, for those that care about it, was only 0.64 and 1.32 for Everton.
00:11:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because despite the defensive ah mode that they took, particularly second half, it was a couple of quick counter opportunities that gave them those clear-cut opportunities where Saar made a great save.
00:11:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, 11 shots to Wolves, 12 to Everton. So fairly even in that capacity, but obviously some from a lot from further out, a lot blocked. um The best opportunity probably being ah Larson being played through. Again, I think it was from Sarabia and it's a very tight angle. I mean, it was going to be hard pushed to do anything from there, but on the right-hand side, going towards the touchline and he's got to make a decision as whether he puts it across goal or towards a near post, goes across goal.
00:11:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
To be fair, Pickford, he forces the save. You've got to hit the target. You've got to make the keeper work. He does that. Pickford makes the save and it just goes ah away to the other side and and no one's able to get there to kind of finish it off and it's cleared.
00:12:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But there was a lot of, there was a lot of good moments like that. And I felt, so There was a couple of moments, Ait Nori was obviously trying to draw a penalty. a couple of moments, he went on an endless run in and out the box, and then it got cleared away, and then he'd run in again. um They never quite did enough to force the penalty.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But I found that quite funny because they were in the press conference earlier in the week, Vitor pointed out to Vitor that we haven't conceed we haven't been given a penalty, I think, all season in open play.
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so Vito said, we're doing something wrong. We need to force more one-on-one interactions in the box to try and get more penalties. And then 8Nori seemed to be trying to single-handedly do that for the entire game, particularly the second half.
00:12:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that that was quite funny. Overall, i think my man of the match, there's two two options really for man of the match for me. The one is Agbedu we've mentioned. I thought he was absolutely stellar. Just came straight back in and showed the that he's literally he's one of the best signings. I mean, of the well, obviously the signing of the transfer window. One of the best signings of the season, even though only played a few games.
00:13:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Then but I injured and now back. But I thought he was a rock player. However, Andre for me, Andre was just ah perfect, astounding, like so good. He seems to get better and better and better.
00:13:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Obviously picked up yellow card. i was I was worried he was gonna get a second for shouting at the ref the way he yeah was clearly frustrated. He felt that that he he got the ball or that he was also impeded at one point.
00:13:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, overall, though, his dominance, his a bit his tracking, his work rate and the celebrating the tackles at times to keep possession when we were pressing in

Future Outlook and Tactical Adjustments

00:13:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
the final third and penning them back and winning the ball high up the pitch. He was involved several times when it looked like they'd break and he would track back and shut that down and get the ball back and then play it forward again. and the the the passion at which he celebrated those moments is what you want to see. It's like we see, you know, we saw from Gomez last season when he first came in and people were so loving the way he would celebrate his tackles. We saw the same from Andre um that we've been seeing the last few few games and and he's just magnificent. So i think Andre is probably my man of the match, but it's it's a close one. Agbedu, I thought was fantastic. But oh Andre, I think, has to just pinch it for me.
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm frustrated. ah Yes, I'm frustrated a little bit that we didn't win. Of course, I want the three points. But overall, i think it's a good point. I think, as i mentioned, given Everton's form, given our circumstances, we want to be getting points, not losing them, or at least not losing.
00:14:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
We didn't lose. Other results went our way, which we don't want to be looking over our shoulder. Obviously, we want it to be in our own hands, which it is at the moment. So a point, it's a point gained.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goal difference stays strong. ah The 1-1 draw keeps that nice and nice and clear still. So, you know, as it is, we are seventeenth still on the table, 28 games played.
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Goal difference is minus 19 and we're on 23 points. So we're now six points clear of Ipswich and Leicester. Both played the same amount games. Goal difference is minus 32 for Ipswich, minus 37 for Leicester. So there's a big goal there. is essentially an extra point.
00:15:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're both still on 17 points. So six points clear now. If we go Southampton and and get that result that we so badly need, because we've got to. We've we've just...
00:15:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
got to do it uh we've just got to win that game so bad i mean if we don't there's going to be hell to pay but you would think uh saturday the 15th of march next week if we go away get the three points there and then once again other results go our way and we end up nine points clear ah that's going to be that's going to put us in an even more solid situation So I'm crossing my fingers next week for the solid three points.
00:16:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think we'll do it. I think we've shown that more than a few times this season, because this is obviously Kunja's second ban, that the team are capable of getting points without him.
00:16:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
As much as we have, obviously, so much to thank him for, for the goals he's brought us, the team does still create opportunities when he's not there. I know maybe there's not as many as we would like.
00:16:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
but I think that will improve. And I know that we've, and we've still managed to score when he's not been on the pitch. Other people have come up with the goods at times. Bellegarde, obviously. Minnetzi's now scored.
00:16:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Larsson already got seven goals before his injury period. And so i think it's an opportunity for these people to shine. I was a little bit sad we didn't see Rodrigo Gomez.
00:17:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I was also a little bit surprised at first that he wasn't anywhere in the starting lineup, given given the fact that Kunja's out. However, it would seem that what with Minetsi and Bellegarde as well, Vitor seemed to make go for a more physical presence for this game. Everton are quite a physical side.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe that's why he was Maybe that's why he went for the formation he did Be interesting to see against Southampton, given that they are a lot weaker, they they are a championship team.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Will he mix that up a bit? Will Alexa Rodrigo Gomez get the start, come in and get some more time? Because we should be, that's a team we should not be sitting back on.
00:17:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
we should be going even without Kunya Gungho and just like taking that to them it's away from home but we are more than capable like we've got to do the business and so I would like to see him go more attacking next week and really maybe give some of those people an opportunity it was nice to see Gedge get a few minutes towards the end he did get knocked off the ball a few times At one point in our final third, ah in our defensive area on the left-hand side of the box, where he kind of, he got knocked off the ball quite aggressively. On the one hand, I was quite shocked that the ref didn't give a free kick because it looked a bit overzealous.
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
However, this ref did let a lot go. um i was actually quite surprised that he let so much go. i thought there was a couple of the Everton players that should have had a at least one booking.
00:18:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and And that was frustrating to me. However, what was more upsetting is that because I do think Gedges had his best season for us so far. mean, that's not hard considering how many games, how poor he was when he first came in terms of just not even wanting to be here.
00:18:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
but all the things he's done well this season when he did get barged off the ball, it was in such a dangerous area. And I think because he expected the free kick to be given, he just kind of stood there and watched as the rest of the defensive players worked to clear the ball from the penalty area.
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
When... ah You know, argue with the ref later and chase the ball. They're like, or chase the players or whatever it is you need to do, but help. But it seemed like he was just kind of stood still, shocked that he wasn't getting anything and then just waited and and waited to see what would happen.
00:19:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't wait, play the game, worry about it later. So that was frustrating, but you know, at least he got a few more minutes and he did make some good runs, but so not much time to really do, do any anything of impact. And, and,
00:19:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think given again that Everton were kind of sat back so much, he's better, I think, on those counters on the quick transitions because he has got pace, maybe not the perfect game for him. So that does speak a lot as to the starting lineup that we mentioned.
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So overall, I was happy. I was happy. um Let's take one more quick message before we get some final thoughts.
00:20:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Do it right now, peeps. Do it right now. um I was a little bit sad that, as I mentioned, Rodrigo Gomez even did a play. We did say do see Hwang Hee-chan come on top for Larson to arrest him.
00:21:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did have a couple of chances. I'm really praying that he that he comes back into form. He really needs it. We need it. You know, if Kunya is out, and on top of that, Kunya we know is going to go in the summer.
00:21:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it's it's pretty much a done deal. we need the likes of Larsson. We need the likes of Chan to do the business. We need them to come back into form. We need Vitor to, you know, get this team working around these other players.
00:21:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to not be reliant on Kunia. And this is the time to do it. We need to support them. and And hopefully they can get us through this this tough period i don't mean in terms of the fixtures because we've got some easier ones coming i just mean in terms of the season the pressure of these last few games of making sure we ensure premier league survival because come next season these are the players some of them are still you know in long-term deals that are going to be here i know we've got a few leaving in the summer but last and obviously that's becoming a permanent deal he's going to be here to stay huanghi chan obviously we we didn't get rid of last summer when offers were put on the table
00:22:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
given that he hasn't performed as well this season and he's had injuries. I can't imagine him going in the summer unless something drastic comes in for him because he hasn't performed like he did.
00:22:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
So his value is arguably dropped and he's had at least two injuries with hamstrings this season. So I, He's going to be here next season. You know, we need these people to be doing the business.
00:22:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
So now is the time to show it, to keep them in the league and then go into next season with more confidence, go into next season, knowing that with or without Cunha, probably without Cunha, given a a few changes of and like ah some additions in the summer, these people can can be the players we know they can be.
00:22:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've seen Huang hit double-digit figures. Yes, it was his best season, but we you know he's a good... can do He can do the job. He can score us goals. It's just clearly something's gone wrong since last season when he picked up that injury after the the eight the Asian Cup and he's not been the same player.
00:23:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he's had some great purple patches for us. Vitor needs to find the recipe there. Larson, he's obviously still young. He's still quite young. I think people forget that.
00:23:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has got experience in other leagues, but he's still quite young and it's his first season in the Premier League. I think he's done... A lot. And I think people don't often see a lot of the work he does like that, that run off the ball yesterday to, to create opportunities for other players to come in, does need to work on his holdup play.
00:23:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I also think he's often better with the ball coming into his feet than he is. Then ironically, I know he's a big guy and I think he's great in the air in terms of heading for goals. If you look at his goal record, he's, he's good in the air attacking, but in terms of holdup play,
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
The ball coming in like lob forward is not necessarily... doesn't necessarily seem to be his MO. When it's on the ground, he seems, I think, a bit better um and running onto it as well.
00:24:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that's that's weird, but some maybe maybe we're not playing to his strengths.

Conclusion: Wolves' Path Forward

00:24:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And admittedly, we aren't in terms of at least attacking threat because we how often do we get aerial balls into the box?
00:24:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. We got a couple yesterday. um he had, I think, at least one opportunity from them. But he needs more. He needs more. Maybe that's something we can we can work on in this period without Kunye because we need to be playing to the strengths of the striker on the pitch, to the strengths of the players on the pitch, not the one-man show of Kunye.
00:24:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
who want always wants it deeper and wants to, you know, shoot from out ridiculous range and do so much and run at people. That's not Larson. That's not him. That's not really Huang.
00:24:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
He likes to run onto the through balls and be a, you know, that, that in the box sniper. So we need, we need to think differently. We need to be prepared for life without Kunya.
00:25:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
We need to support these guys And with the strength of Andre and Gomez behind them, there's still so much to look forward to there.
00:25:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
i am I am optimistic, guys. I'm optimistic. I feel it. I feel it. I hope you do too. So knowing that that we've got people returning to fitness, though, knowing that, you know, we've got an international break coming up soon as well. There's so much room, I think, for optimism. Six points clear.
00:25:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
The only way is up, people. The only way up. um And the bench is looking a lot healthier. I mean, you look at the bench yesterday, Santi Bueno, Pedro Lima, Giga, who obviously has had a couple of games now. And I know he's not starter at the moment, but there's more between Giga and Bueno. There's fresher options on the bench.
00:26:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Doyle, Guedes being fit, Gomez, Hwangi Chan, Pablo Sarabia. You know, the bench the bench is looking stronger than it has for a while now that people are coming back from these injuries.
00:26:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's what we need with Kunyuk being out. We need options. We need structure. And we need people that are going to step up. And I think yesterday people stepped up. Manetzi got his goal.
00:26:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought Bellegarde played great once again. Andre was fantastic. Aitnori trying to single-handedly win penalties from the entire team unsuccessfully. But he tried. And Agbedou being solid alongside Tati Gomez again.
