This is David Bayless, host of the Torganic Podcast, where I talk with musicians about living a healthy lifestyle on the road. This short episode is a bit different from the usual format. Recently, a guest asked me what Torganic was all about. I took that opportunity to share the motivation and inspiration behind starting the blog and making the move to expand it into a podcast. Please reach out and let me know what you think by commenting and rating the show on iTunes. Hope you dig this brief description of the story of Torganic.

Balancing Touring with Health

What made you start the blog and what made you decide you wanted to do a podcast? I've been living this life on the road now for so many years. In my 20s, you know, touring and doing shorter or longer tours and then hitting a point where I just was like, boom, I was just like on the road continuously doing 150 shows a year. And that's really actually coincided with when I got pretty heavy into

living the plant based life. And I had been getting more into fitness, like leading up to that. And those two things kind of went hand in hand for me. It was all one because I got more into health. I was like, Oh, I gotta feed my body. I gotta treat my body. Well, like these two things are going to feed each other. If I'm going to be serious about fitness, I have to be serious about diet. And so they kind of fed each other all at the same time my touring life started to just

get kind of crazy.

Creating Torganic: Inspiration and Challenges

And so I was forced to be like, okay, how am I going to do this? If I'm going for something, I go for it. That's where it's going to stay. So, you know, I was totally dedicated to the path. And of course, I wasn't perfect from day one. It's always a journey of ups and downs. I don't need to paint a picture any other way. And through doing that and figuring out how I was going to live that healthy lifestyle on the road,
00:01:45

and certain people that were receptive to that were encouraging me on and looking for guidance. And then other bands that we were on the road with checking out what I was doing and we're like, okay, this is the guy, this is the healthy guy. And it was honestly encouragement from other people being like, you should turn this into something.

It's hard for me to keep up with like the day to day blogging, just with my lifestyle, but making a city by city guide almost, that was something that I was like, okay, I can accomplish this. And that kind of gave me the jump off point to give me that foundation to build from, to create, to organic. Then I just got excited about it. I built it. I spent a lot of time figuring out how to do it, even though I'm sure there's much more effective ways. But after a year, I'm like, okay, this has been awesome.

I want to figure out A, how can I get more people involved? B, how can I make this have the most positive impact possible? And I think almost most importantly, how do I make this not just about me? Initially, my idea was like, oh, I want this to be a forum for people. But then I realized just the nature of at least the blog that I'm doing. It's people just going to see what I'm doing. And I haven't been able to facilitate. I'm not sure.
00:02:58

if there's other strategies I could be implementing, but it hasn't become that forum of talking to other people, and I don't want it to just be about me. I always had a really strong sense of wanting Torganic to be a community-based thing, where this is a positive thing, not just for vegans, and not just for vegetarians, and not just for people that are gluten-free, just people that are trying to live a healthy lifestyle, certainly based in how I do it about life on the road, but then,
00:03:28

in a greater sense, just life as a whole and how to have a positive impact.

Transition to Podcasting and Community Building

00:03:32

So I had a concept of just short little video blogs with all these amazing people I know. And my buddy, this film guy that I was talking to was like, man, it sounds like you just want to do a podcast. And at first I pushed back. I'm like, no, no, but this video thing is going to. And then the more I just let that marinate, I was like, you're right.
00:03:55

I just want to do a podcast because I love podcasts. I know you said you like podcasts. I'm like, I'm a big podcast guy. Every day I listen to one. Yeah. I'm really into all kinds of podcasts and there's so many great ones out there. It's like if you, if you actually explore, it's like you could probably discover a new amazing podcast every day, but I'm just deep into the ones that I love and they've really influenced my life in positive ways. So I was like, okay, this is like the forum. And, and I really think that.

in this particular context with just a community of musicians that I'm a part of, we could really build something special having these conversations and just letting our fans know and our friends know and be a part of it and letting more people in on how people roll and how they do their thing on a daily basis. Wow, that's so cool, man. I love it. I love it. Good positive message. Yeah, that's the idea.
