Podcast Introduction

00:00:17
Speaker
up, everybody? This is Jared from Echo blades and you are tuned in to the triple T podcast for knife makers with my buddy Dennis Terrell from Terrell knife works. We thank you for joining us and sharing this time with us on this fabulous Tuesday morning. What's up, Dennis? Hey, man. Uh, not much, not much. Just,

Travel Plans and Pre-Check Frustrations

00:00:38
Speaker
uh, you know, finishing out the weekend, uh, just finished relaxing in the hot tub, you know,
00:00:46
Speaker
Life's rough. Yeah, sounds like it. Sounds like it. I just got attacked by some kind of a gnat or something while I was doing that intro. It's quite distracting. So you're you're getting ready to fly off to the great beyond in a few hours, right? The stars are bright, a big night. I mean, no, now it's a clap.
00:01:15
Speaker
Deep in the heart of Texas. That's where I'm going, boys. You never heard that? No. I'm Canadian, remember? Yeah, you are. You want to hear O Canada? I can sing that for you. Yeah, I do. O Canada. Nobody wants to hear me sing, man. Almost every one of the dozen listeners we have.
00:01:39
Speaker
We just lost it. We had a baker's dozen before this, but damn Canadians. Oh, man. So yeah, I'm packed up, ready to go. Got to. It's what? Nine o'clock. I got to get up at three o'clock in the morning and get on a plane super early and fly over to Texas. And then you flying out Oakland?
00:02:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yes, sir. That's good. That's close to us, by the way. Yeah. No. My buddies were just telling me that I keep flying out of Oakland. I'm like, yeah, that's that's a good airport. Yeah. Bad neighborhood. Good. Good airport, though. Quick in and out. We'd be we'd be less enthused if it was San Francisco. We were flying out of like we are for Blade Show. Yeah. Which is some fantastic news that we have, right? Uh huh. All the lights are booked.
00:02:38
Speaker
Yeah. All the flights are booked. I have one more to do my, my return flight. So I'm just picking a day here. So right to be, to be determined, but, and then shit, I was pumping up the whole TSA application process. Yeah. Like I love this already and I don't even know what it is.
00:03:01
Speaker
You're a sweetheart. You're a genuine sweetheart, buddy. You got fucked in the drive-thru, didn't you? Tell me, tell me. They shorted me a McChicken or something. I don't know. But yeah, so when I did it, the application was super simple. Like I said, the site where you go and
00:03:29
Speaker
give all your fingerprints and shit was it's literally like right across the street from my work. That was super convenient. I went and did that. That took a total of like five minutes. And then as I left, the lady was like, Yeah, you should get a notification and like 48 hours for your KTM known traveler number or some some shit like that. And I was like, Cool, I can't wait. I'm going to use this for for this trip.
00:03:58
Speaker
all last week, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. So I went back in there and they're like, Oh, man, you're like the third person that's come in here this week that this has happened to. So the caveat is, is you can get it within 48 hours up to 60 days. What do you mean up to 60 days? It could take 60 days process. The reason I'm laughing everybody is because this guy was bragging about having TSA pre and how
00:04:27
Speaker
he was gonna fly past me at the check-in. Mind you, you still will for Atlanta, but it's still funny to me. Yeah, but the worst news is I have to take off my shoes. Oh yeah, that's bad. For everybody else, that's bad. Yeah, that is bad. I don't even wear shoes. I just wear them to the airport. No, but yeah, I was a little bummed about this, so I don't know. Maybe they're denying my background.
00:04:58
Speaker
Yeah, check. I'm really, really sorry to hear that. I know, I can tell. You're going to be with the rest of us peons in the regular line. No, no, no, no, no. There's many, many, many in this exclusive club. I'm just too lazy to get my ass in gear to do something like that.
00:05:19
Speaker
That is like number 500 on my to-do list. I'm telling you, it was so simple. Now I just got to wait, which is something I'm not good at. You

Knife Making Techniques and Challenges

00:05:27
Speaker
know, Mr. Instant gratification over here. So, Hey, I'm still hoping to get my passport in time to go to Cancun. Oh yeah. Canadian passport office. Isn't the, uh, it's like the DMV of Canada. Uh, not the fastest government, uh, location.
00:05:50
Speaker
But, you know, I gave him five months notice, not like that's going to be enough. That's a bummer. Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine. I sure hope so, Dennis. I sure hope so. This happened to me once before, where it's actually the same thing, except this time my passport hasn't expired.
00:06:19
Speaker
Inevitably, I put my passport in my back pocket and then it goes through the wash. And for Canadian passports, at least, if you, if your passport gets wet, it's considered, even though it's completely legible, I've flown with it dozen times, internationally, no problems whatsoever. Like it's totally fine. It's like, it's a little wrinkly. And so the US, the Canadian passport office says it's damaged.
00:06:50
Speaker
And this time they actually phoned me, which was good and said, you got to complete this form. And the form has one question on it that says, how was it damaged? Like what you fucking couldn't ask me that over the phone. Literally like, I mean, it could, I guess you could fill out the form if it was lost or whatever, but this is, it was damaged. They have it in their possession. So I fill out the form. Well, yeah. Cause you have to turn in your passport and in order to, it's a renewal.
00:07:20
Speaker
Oh, same with American passports. You got to send in your passport because they void it, right? Okay. You're legal here, right? You have a passport. This is up for debate. Probably. Hence my DSA. You don't seem to know how this works. So I'm kind of wondering. Well, I mean, you're assuming that, you know, I'm, I'm a world traveler here. Uh, but yeah, so now the same thing.
00:07:49
Speaker
Uh, but when this happened last time, my passport, they didn't tell me until three weeks before I was supposed to fly that my passport wasn't going to come in time. And I had to do a full application three weeks before. And that is impossible from the U S I had to, the four days before I was supposed to travel, I had to fly to Seattle, drive across the border.
00:08:17
Speaker
to get to pick up my passport in Vancouver in person, drive back across the border, answer the US customs guy, why I've only been in Canada for 45 minutes, get back on a plane and fly home.
00:08:44
Speaker
Uh, it was a, uh, the most expensive passport ever. So I'm familiar with this shenanigans. This time I thought I'd get lots of time. I know. Right. You should have just been boarded here. It would have been all better for you. Yeah. Well, I had a, I guess I, we had a, our whole family got passports a while back when we were, we're traveling a lot and then we've not been traveling a lot out of the state. So I don't, I guess I should probably renew that thing.
00:09:15
Speaker
You have a real idea yet? Okay. Yeah. It's a funny story about that, but it's kind of boring. So we'll just move on to help you get that thing.
00:09:25
Speaker
Then I got up to the to the line and I was like, I'm just trying to get my my license replaced. They're like, oh, you should have just clicked. Check this box. You're going to do that in 10 minutes. Like motherfuckers. You've got a real person and all that. But anyways, we're all booked. We got flights. We got rooms. We got a table. We got everything. I'm still everything. Yeah, I'm still.
00:09:56
Speaker
It's great. Yeah, I got Parker's flight. So officially my son is coming with us. Nice. He's going home alone, but he's coming with us. He's not coming to Mexico. Mm hmm. So I'm not going home. So he's going to be the knife caddy on the way home. Cool. Well, hopefully he comes back with nothing. Yeah, that would be nice. That's right. See what I did there, huh? Huh?
00:10:26
Speaker
Right. Well, yeah, I don't know how many I'm going to be bringing, so I'm going to have to get my ass in gear. But I did finish a knife today, so I was pretty happy about that. Cool. What'd you finish? That, that Bowie knife that, that I put on IG, that Boina Burrell handle, Bowie knife. The one, remember I said,
00:10:52
Speaker
I didn't, I had this piece of Damascus in my drawer for over a year. I couldn't remember what it was. All I knew that had a nickel shim in it. So I finally turned it into a knife and it's, it's a low layer Damascus nickel shim, low layer Damascus core. It's kind of cool. Um, it's very bright, like very contrasty. Um, cause it's pretty low layer. Um, but I like it. It looks, it looks pretty cool.
00:11:21
Speaker
I did see it, and it came out fantastic. Thank you. I really, I still think there's a spider in there. It was overwhelming to me, like it's the day of Spider-Man. Yeah, because the layers are really con, very high contrast, and it's really shiny, and I got a story about finishing it, so I'll talk about that. But yeah, I know what you mean. There is kind of a spot that looks like a big spider on it.
00:11:52
Speaker
Yeah. I thought it was cool. Look great. Yeah. So I might as well tell that story now. So I've tried Gator piss in the past and I mean, it, it was just okay. Uh, I probably didn't exactly follow the directions or I don't know what it was. This time I watched Koi's video twice. Um, I really paid attention to all his instructions.
00:12:19
Speaker
And it came out really, really nice. Like shiny, shiny, 15 and 20, like really shiny. And I'm still not used to the matte finish on the

Community Learning in Knife Making

00:12:31
Speaker
dark on the 1084. I'm used to the, and I like the shiny coffee, but the brightness of the 15 and 20 is really impressive. In fact, it was the 15 and 20 on the knife is so bright that it's hard to tell there's a nickel shim in it.
00:12:50
Speaker
Yeah. I agree. Yeah. But it's really good. I think I'm gonna do the Viking sword in Gatorpis as well. I'm very happy with the Gatorpis finish. I was a little iffy on it in the past, but I'm coming around. I'm coming around. Koi, if you're listening, I'm coming around. This is good news. This is good news for everybody.
00:13:20
Speaker
I do like, I do like coffee finish. Uh, I do like the shininess of coffee. Uh, so I will continue to do that for certain blades, especially ones more want that have like the black core. I really liked that done in coffee, but, um, yeah, I like how the, the Gator piss finish. So it came out really dark. The,
00:13:43
Speaker
Oh, yeah. The black came out really, really, really, really dark. Yeah. Like you said, it is a little bit of a matte type. No, no gloss finish. But the the fifteen and twenty and really, really does pop. It came out really nice. Yeah. I think they know what they're doing over there. Yeah, I think so. But that if it's not sold before a blade show, then that'll be coming with me. I haven't put it up on the website yet or opened it up to patrons. But I think I will tomorrow.
00:14:15
Speaker
I'm totally fine if it sells before a blade. It's a good practice. Yeah. Yeah. Good practice. The point is to get rid of them, not to show. I'm totally happy having fewer dives of blade and just sitting around talking to people and, you know, having a bunch of blades come home with me. Yeah. I agree. What about you? What have you been working on? I got a grand total of
00:14:46
Speaker
sanding one side of um something I was working on to 220 uh still trying to work out the um getting the plunge line out I ground this one a little different than I normally do and I I strapped on the uh the file guide and then you know realized after that um my choice is to you know for the chef knives to not have the plunge line
00:15:16
Speaker
showing. So I have a process that's kind of risky. But, you know, to get it out. But it's worked in the past. So I just got with the trip coming up from work, I got overwhelmed with, you know, a lot of things. And then yesterday, I ended up having all the intentions to spend
00:15:43
Speaker
I had intentions to spend all weekend working on this knife and get it glued up before I left. And but I had forgot on Friday night that my buddy Sean, the knife guy. And I were talking about trying to get together and he had threw out a date, which was
00:16:07
Speaker
Saturday. A while back and then it just out of nowhere. I just remembered on like Friday night and I was like, Hey, just definitely I'll be in the shop all day tomorrow if you're gonna come. He's like, Oh, fuck, I almost forgot. So but luckily it worked out and he came over and
00:16:25
Speaker
My shop is a fucking disaster. Like it is an endless, endless, like rearranging, trying to organize. And then, you know, you know how it is when you start to work on something like you can clean your shop in a minute, just like a hurricane goes through, you know, when Jeff stopped by today, after coming from your house, he came to mine and I took him out into the shop and he's like, man, there's so much more room in your shop than Jared. So I'm like, yeah, but his shop is actually bigger than mine.
00:16:56
Speaker
It is. Yeah. I don't feel like I have more shit than you, but I have a lot more shit than you in there. That's for sure, like spread out. It's a it's a nightmare. We're getting there, though. I am getting there. But I was like, fuck, maybe I should go clean it. I was like, I fucked that. But so we came over, gave him a tour. We kind of walked through, you know, everything. That's kind of what he said, too. He was like, he was, it looks a lot like
00:17:22
Speaker
like there's more room on Instagram. And I was like, I said, there's a lot of room in here and everything's on. Most things are on wheels and you can get it around. I said, it's just a fucking disaster right now. So just try to try to move past it. But man, I really, really, really, really enjoyed the hanging out. We just bullshitted for a couple of hours. You know, a couple of weeks ago, I was talking about how I don't really enjoy talking about my day job, like that kind of shop talk.
00:17:50
Speaker
Mm hmm. It just doesn't do anything for me. But, you know, when we get together with another maker and we just start bullshit and then, you know, it's show and tell time and, you know, oh, you do this or hey, oh, I didn't see that or, you know, I don't have this or you have that. Like, bro, I could do it all day forever and not get bored. Like it is.
00:18:13
Speaker
It is so much fun. And like hearing somebody else's take on how they're doing something, their tips, their, you know, suggestions on, you know, maybe trying something a different way or, you know, and then you find yourself doing that. So I really don't have anything that was kind of finished, just a bunch of old stuff and some works in progress.
00:18:38
Speaker
But he brought over quite a few things and, you know, just really nice work. Nice Damascus and he's hand forging a lot of his stuff. So currently right now with this, you know, path that I'm on right now is really, it was a really good talk. Talk about grinds and, you know, and convexing edges and like,
00:19:04
Speaker
It was it was a lot of fun. And I really enjoyed it. And I think we shouted him out a couple of weeks ago. The guy does really, really, really good work. Cool, dude. So. I'm thankful, though, because he's pretty like. I think he's like 20, 30 minutes away. The opposite way of you and we're going to try to get.
00:19:26
Speaker
Oh, he moved to to Bay Point or Pittsburgh area. So just on the other side of Concord in between somewhere between my house and Concord. But so he's closer to me now. And so we're going to try to get together on a weeknight, which works for me good, because I can schedule that a lot easier with some notice and hopefully we'll get to start hammering some stuff out and hang out. So it was really, really, really good time. So.
00:19:57
Speaker
That was that. And then shit, man, it was it was the hang out with the maker week for me, actually, because on Thursday, I got to go hang out with my buddy Nick Rollins from Rollins Knives. And he's in Oakland. Weird now, I guess. Yeah. Anyways, he's in Oakland and.
00:20:21
Speaker
you know, I try to stay in contact, but like, we're working on a knife together. And I had asked him if
00:20:30
Speaker
um we could just like kind of go through the process with him you know this his way you know and kind of just keep it out of keep my style out of it I guess because I don't know what the **** I'm doing when it comes to you know hammering knives uh forging and um like I've already said it before if you guys aren't following the guy go check him out he his work is absolutely incredible um super inspiring to me but
00:21:00
Speaker
So I brought then I had that knife, we were going to start grinding. But it turns out that and it was really, really kind of so I have this like model like where I'll take if I'm trying to learn something, I'll ask three people that I respect, admire, mentor, you know what I mean? That
00:21:20
Speaker
are better, you know, and I'll ask him the same question. And if I ever get two of them to agree without ever talking about the other ones, right, I kind of take that as gospel, like, I'll... That's good advice. Yeah, that's kind of like what I'll do. So they don't know each other, they don't know I'm asking it, but I try to get some information that aligns with
00:21:41
Speaker
you know, without leading them into the answer, because that's real easy to do. But so they both said every time we forge, no matter how much I think I got the edge thin enough, it's never thin enough. And they're like, you know, you're put in this position where you got to go back into the forge and redo it.
00:22:06
Speaker
And that's where we're at with the knife that I was working on. So it's either do an S grind on it or go back in the in the forge. So I haven't decided what I'm doing because I've not done an S grind and I don't think they're necessarily simple to do. Right. So I don't think they're as hard as you think. Maybe, but it's something I haven't done. So it's a decision to make. But, you know, I was holding up his knife with next to mine and one that he had finished and it's
00:22:35
Speaker
not horribly thinner, but it's much, much thinner that'll allow us to get the the brute to forge finish that I'm trying to go for on this guy. But yeah, that's the key. That's the key there for everyone. You're trying to do a have a brute to forge finish without grinding both sides of the entire knife. That's why it's a problem.
00:22:57
Speaker
Yeah, and I'm really trying to understand the you know, the convex grind on a chef knife to for function and knowing that there's the intention behind that, you know, creates food release and and provides a better cutting tool for for the kitchen. And, you know, not that. Well, what I'm doing is bad, but there's always ways to get better, right? And
00:23:28
Speaker
So I just I just went to school basically is what I did. I just I watched him. He forged two knives, two little petty knives in front of me. I recorded him. I just kind of like try to be of service. I guess he's doing his thing, got him some footage so he can kind of do it because we're all in this fucking shithole deal with Instagram right now, which I have a pretty good update on some hot hot take new information. I'll get into right now, but
00:23:58
Speaker
Yeah, so we just talked about shaping it, profiling it, you know, the edge, making a plan for it all. And it was a really, so as far as that goes, I had a really good week, you know, hanging out with two, I saw you on Friday, like it's just, it was a mix of being overwhelmed and completely stressed out from work, knowing I got to travel and do all this stuff and shit's just the normal, normal game there. But I made some time to at least, you know,
00:24:27
Speaker
connect and hang out with some people. So that was a lot of fun. That's awesome. Just getting that little bit of education and talking with other Smiths and see how they... I don't get to do that enough. You hang out with more different Smiths than I do, so that's good. From when I started,
00:24:52
Speaker
And to this day, right now, I 100% stand behind putting myself out there and being the initiator in those kinds of situations, right? I understand the importance of it for myself, right? And a lot of times it goes
00:25:10
Speaker
It works out for more people, but for me, it is absolutely necessary for me to continue to reach out and talk and put myself in those positions that are necessarily not the most comfortable, right?
00:25:23
Speaker
And at first, right, but they turn into friendships and they turn into, you know, like mentorships and, and, and just information exchange. And, you know, we're all learning and education is, is the key here. Right. So, um, 100% Dennis, I think you should call somebody and Cole call somebody and go hang out with them. Actually, I was just on the phone with, uh, with Rick, Rick Hall the other day. And I think we're going to get together pretty soon and, uh, do something.
00:25:53
Speaker
I don't know about before blade, but yeah, we'll get together. That's another good dude. Yeah. I love that guy. Yeah. And I got a course that I'll be taking with Mike Vagnino probably after blade at this point. Yeah, I want to take that too.
00:26:15
Speaker
Yeah. I'll talk to you. Just say yes. Yeah. Just say yes. Of course. Jared, you're coming right along. Well, he can't do two people at a time. That's the issue. Oh, okay. Yeah. His shop is way too tiny for that. So he said, no, that's a no go. He can only do one person at a time. So, gotcha. You might have to book it yourself. Boo. I know. I tried, but it's all good. But that's a great, that is a great direction.
00:26:43
Speaker
I'm thinking about doing some kind of a class too as well, which is weird. I just got this weird message from somebody that reached out to me about if I was willing to teach and take on an apprentice. That kind of shit blows me away, right? Because it shouldn't be happening. So I'm going to forward him on to you.
00:27:09
Speaker
because he's looking for like a one-on-one kind of class type thing for forging. And he had mentioned that everybody was suggesting that he goes to the crucible and I said, yeah, well, I did the same thing, but I got a guy for you, so. Cool. I got a couple of guys for that April class, so we'll see. Maybe I can slide them into a different one here. Yeah. Cool. Yeah.
00:27:39
Speaker
Yeah, I'm just trying to figure out what I'm going to do for blade. I've actually got that. Remember that shark knife, the 3d printed shark. I do the canister. Yeah, the canister. Yeah. Shark down the blade. So that one I got almost done. So that'll be the next one. And plus this, of course, I'm continuing to work on the sword for the Viking challenge. Got the guard all ground. That was a chore.
00:28:09
Speaker
It was like, it was chunky, man. So for everyone, like I had a piece of twist Damascus when I tested the, um, torque multiplier on the twisting, the updated twisting machine, I twisted a one inch piece. Really, really tightly, like all thread tight. I was very happy with it. And, uh, so I had that piece and I figured, oh, I'll use that as the material for the guard. But.
00:28:39
Speaker
twist Damascus looks so much better if you grind into it a lot. So I wanted to take, because you'll, if you haven't seen my video on Turkish twist, go, go watch that. Cause in there I show diagrams of what the pattern look. Cause if you just grind the very surface of twist Damascus, it just looks like lines. And the deeper you go into it, you start to see stars.
00:29:07
Speaker
And that's what you want to see those perfect stars. And you really only get those if you grind a third into it. Okay. Okay. So that's what I wanted.

Viking Sword Project and Shop Upgrades

00:29:19
Speaker
So I got this big honking piece. I forged it down a little bit. And then knowing that I wanted to grind a third. So when I showed it to Jared, he's like, what the hell? That's like, uh, but now it's really, uh,
00:29:37
Speaker
Slim and trim. And I don't know, I think I'm taking a little creative license on this one. I'm not going, I'm sure I'm gonna catch some shit in the comments about how my sword isn't exactly historically accurate, which is fine. I don't care. I'm making something that aesthetically I like. So the guard is a little more, the guards on typical Viking swords are really boring. They're really flat.
00:30:07
Speaker
Mine is not. It's got some quillions. It's got, it's a little, it's a little more embellished. And of course I'm going to add the, I'm going to do some inlay and some fancy shit on it. So, so anyway, long story. Oh, got the guard done, went to slot the, the guard and then forgot to have an annealed in and I was trying to drill holes. So I put a pause on that. And that's why I worked on the buoy knife and finished that off.
00:30:37
Speaker
So, so yeah, I got three knives done for blade. The sword, the sword will be four and then the shark knife. And then I'm going to do a bunch of EDCs. So after this, it'll be a batch work after the shark knife. Nice, which is fun for everybody else.
00:30:58
Speaker
You're going to see that damn guard and I swear it was like five times as big as it's going to turn out. That's why I was like it was a chunk monster. It was huge. Yeah. Yeah. So yeah, particularly in and I also forged that I haven't shaped it at all on the grinder. It's like a it's like a it's a big block right now squared up. But the block for the pommel I'm doing something which is totally not
00:31:28
Speaker
Historically accurate, but I'm making the pommel and I'm actually Viking Viking swords the pommel at a Viking sword tends to have three lobes on it these kind of three I don't know no other way to describe it, but it's like a three lobed pommel and Normally the it's like pinned together and it's I don't know I hate peening Things together because I just don't think that's a very I don't know. I just don't like it
00:31:59
Speaker
So what I'm gonna do is the central lobe on the pommel, I'm actually gonna make a big pommel nut and it's gonna be the star explosion that I made for the plug wells. I still have a cylinder of that that's exactly the right size. So the central lobe will be the explosion Damascus and it will screw into the center of the pommel. Very cool.
00:32:29
Speaker
Yeah. So I'm excited to see how that's going to work out. And I'm trying to make it look kind of seamless that it just screws in and no pins, no other like things. So yeah, stay tuned for that. Yeah, that's a good idea. Yeah. I'm not Viking at all, but cool. No, I don't give a shit if it's Viking. I wanted to make, I wanted to make it look good and be
00:32:58
Speaker
you know, aesthetically pleasing more than historically perfect. Yeah, I mean, it's your sword. Fuck him. Yeah, exactly. Fuck him. Yeah, I love that. One other thing I got to do was today, Jeff came over and we were kind of
00:33:18
Speaker
working on our endless shop upgrades. But I went and got the Harbor Freight cart for the induction forge that I wanted. And we put that thing together. So it's the it's not the little the standard one. It's the one that's got a little drawer. So I got the idea from
00:33:43
Speaker
Oh, Chris zep from make everything I watched his video on induction forges. And that's the one he had. So it just got a little drawer where you could put all the so when I have the sandblast cabinet on that's a Harbor Freight one with the drawer. Okay, yeah, so it that out of the box is not tall enough to accommodate the chiller on the bottom. So we had to we got some
00:34:12
Speaker
Cut the sides off the bottom. No, we just added some two inch aluminum angle. OK. And gave it a riser. So nice. It's it's up. And that was a fucking was a chore. And it took a lot longer than we like both. It dawned on us that there's like four. Nuts and bolts that hold each leg there, right?
00:34:38
Speaker
I know. They're pain in the ass. They take two hours to put together those things. Fuck, dude. I had no idea. I was like, oh, my God, this I don't want to do this anymore. I want you to get out of here so I could like do some something on my, you know, some more stuff. Bro, I had to I had to find it was it 36.
00:34:58
Speaker
Yeah, it was 30 something fucking bold nuts and bolts of quarter. We got it done, but I was counting finding, you know, sorting bolts. He was fucking drilling holes countersink. It was a, it was a son of a bitch, but it's done. The, the, and the forge, the induction is out of the box. The chillers out of the box. It's in its home. Um, do you plumb the water, the water lines? No, I didn't do anything. Just wait. I still got to do all the electrical stuff. So yeah, it's, uh,
00:35:28
Speaker
And besides, I got to get all the extra shit that I need from you. So yeah, I haven't done any social media on the induction forage. Like I'm, I'm actually, once I get this sword behind, of course I got blade show, but I want to take like a day and just do some foraging. That's not knives.
00:35:58
Speaker
I really wanna play around and make some leaves and just use the induction forge and just make a bunch of content with the induction forge. And I actually wanna practice, because if I do this class in the summer that's just a four hour basic blacksmithing class, I gotta remember how to do leaves and snakes and these other little basic blacksmithing
00:36:27
Speaker
you know, projects. So that'd be fun. And then, I mean, I got more projects in my head than time on my hands, because I still want to do the spoons, the coffee scoops. You know, when I got I got the new lathe, I'm supposed to do content on the new lathe, because
00:36:51
Speaker
You know, Precision Matthews gave me a deal, a really ripping deal on that lathe. So I got to do some content around that. Some of that will be, because when I do the pommel nut for the sword, I'll show off the lathe. But, you know, I feel like I owe them some content around that lathe. So, I mean, I got so many things that I want to do and, you know, damn blade show and all the shit I got to do for that.
00:37:20
Speaker
Man, I tell you what, that's, that's not a bad situation to be in for a content creator. That's true. And I was finding myself like two months ago with like, I was running out of content a little bit, which is why I decided to do the beginner series again. And now I'm like, I've got so much content racked up, like ideas and things to do that. I feel like I've got content for the rest of the year. Yeah, that's good.
00:37:51
Speaker
Yeah. So, um, Hey man, we didn't even talk about the triple T video last week. So let's cover them this week. So first off the heat treating video. And this is probably the third install of that video that I've done. And I'm always tweaking the recipes a little bit. And, you know, like. Laren Thomas will, he'll do a video. I think he did one on like.
00:38:19
Speaker
heat treating ADCRV2 and learned a little bit and I tweaked my recipe on that one. So always good to go back and update those things.

Heat Treatment Techniques and Misconceptions

00:38:30
Speaker
But what's your take on heat treating? Anything that came out of that video that sparked your interest or questions or topics to discuss? No, I thought it was a good video. The one thing
00:38:49
Speaker
that we you didn't have in there before was the D.T. Anil, which has become a huge part of my same ideal now. Right. And you brought up already brought up the one on ADCRV to where he kind of has his own take. I don't know if there was a video on that or not, but I remember digging around on the Internet when I was doing the last version of the Stormtroopers.
00:39:14
Speaker
It was an article. I don't know if he did. Yeah, but it's not. Yeah, it was an article because I remember kind of I had never used it before and I made a couple of those the intrepids for the stormtrooper and I liked how they came out. Minus all the decar so I bought some more of that. So I'm going to be using. That for some of the things, but the DT and Neil and
00:39:45
Speaker
I've been asking a lot of people actually like, so why, why are you annealing? Like, right? We understand grain refinement, normalization, you know, what, what is the benefit of annealing prior to the quench? And I'm asking you that. So I have my take. I'll be honest. Most people, I think when most people anneal, they will anneal and I'm, I was guilty of this. I would only anneal.
00:40:15
Speaker
if I was gonna do a lot of grinding and I wanted to make the grinding easier, pre-heat treat. And it wasn't until I was really going through Laren's book and listening to him, well, reading, whatever, and I think he goes through it in a couple of his videos on actually being able to get a half point, an extra point of hardness
00:40:39
Speaker
by annealing right before the quench, right before you austenize the blade. And that's why I do it now. And make sure I do that anneal just to optimize the steel. And there's a couple, I wanna cover a couple little misnomers. And this is, again, a lot of this I'm just regurgitating what Laren said, but people still do a couple of these things.
00:41:09
Speaker
And I just wanna clear it up, especially for the new people listening. The difference, people, and it's even in the little graphic that I showed, that showed, it talked about how many times it was normalized, right? And the fact that normalization and the grain refinement are done at different temperatures. And a lot of people get this, I don't know where it came from,
00:41:40
Speaker
I think someone said their recipe back way back and everyone just like jumped on that bandwagon of descending temperatures, this 1600, 1500, 1400. And if you think about it, that's actually pretty close to 1600 is kind of where you would normalize. Okay. I do it at 15. So let's talk about 10 series deals. So.
00:42:08
Speaker
Normalization, I would do at 1575. So you're right around there at 1600. Grain refine, I do at 1450. So it's under the austenizing temperature, the quench temperature. And then they do, which I mean, they probably cool to black. So they're not treating it like an anneal, but they're doing it at that anneal temperature of like 1400, which, you know, I do at 1380.
00:42:38
Speaker
per Laren's book. But I don't think they're letting that slow cool. And Laren and others, Graham from UK, I forget, the UK blade, something, whatever, he'll tell you the same thing. Doing grain refine at multiple temperatures, it's only the last one that counts, right?
00:43:03
Speaker
So that's why- That's what we've read, yes. Right. Don't do the descending temperatures. It's the last one that counts. And that's why we do it twice, just to really further refine that grain. And then the anneal, which is below that temperature, is really to just reset the steel at its softest state to get ready for that quench temperature. Yep. And that's what-
00:43:32
Speaker
Yeah, that was my take on it is that, you know, for stock removal. Anil's not necessary for. Yeah, I'm shaking my head like. Right. I mean, I'm air quoting. Yeah, I mean, I'm air quoting. So but at the same time, to increase harden ability,
00:43:59
Speaker
That's a process that I've added into my heat treat. And for the sake of time, I run for the steels that I use, the DET anneal, and I'm comfortable with that. So I'm glad that you went through that because it's an alternate method. It's a faster method of getting to that point. Unfortunately, it does require a kiln of some kind to slowly ramp that down from 12
00:44:29
Speaker
100 or whatever it is at a rate of 600 to you know, so it takes about an hour ish or so but you can get that done rather than you know, they'll leave in the forge overnight or vermiculite or however you're doing it. So yeah, I mean, and it's different if you're doing this in a forge, okay, the process is going to be a little different. As soon as I'm done a forging session, if I'm in a forge, sometimes I'll even normalize in a forge all
00:44:57
Speaker
After I'm totally done forging, I'll go back in the forge, heat it up to reddish orange, whatever, like something that I know is 1600 degrees. I also have a PID, so I know the temperature of the steel, right? And I'll heat it up to 1600 degrees and then I'll air cool it. So then it's normalized, you know, so I've taken the stress out of it anyway. I might still do it in the oven, or sometimes I don't, but most times I will
00:45:27
Speaker
you know, just to be really precise. But if you don't have an oven, do your normalization right at the end of your, um, are you of your forging session? Yep. And then do your, do your grain refines right before you quench. Most times, I think if you're using a forge, you're probably not going to go through that anneal cycle unless you have to anneal it for some other reason. Like if you really need to anneal it to drill holes or something like that, but. Right.
00:45:56
Speaker
You know, you're already, you know, a bit finger in the wind if you're using a forge anyway. Um, but I know I am. That's for sure. So I want to talk about something that I think you had a lot of problems with early on. And I think a lot of people have a lot of problems. And I like to say it's four letter word, but I guess it's a, it's a six letter word. Decarp.
00:46:24
Speaker
And I consider it a four letter word. And I wanted to show that in the last video, the the final grind video. Yep. Because you can you can see D carp, right? Like when you grind and you see that kind of marbly look, like if you don't see perfectly flat clean steel, when you're grinding, and you see kind of a marbly texture, that's your D carp.
00:46:54
Speaker
Right. And certain steels, like you mentioned ADCRV, terrible, like terrible decarb, like you really got, you really got to leave a lot of meat on the blade to get rid of that decarb. It can be 10,000ths, like or more, or more thick. Yeah. And especially like I got to the point where I was doing ADCRV normalization and grain refine in stainless steel foil.
00:47:25
Speaker
Well, that's yeah, that's something I'm going to I'm going to try to do. I don't know how functional it's going to be, but I can't I haven't been able to talk myself out of it not working. But I have a bunch of packets that I made for some stainless that I had heat treated. So I saved those. And my intention is to just reuse those. Oh, yeah. For the for the 10 series or a CRV to just to just to reduce all that, you know, it's like
00:47:55
Speaker
Absolutely. I, I don't, I don't know that it's not going to work. It'll totally work. I, I'm not sure I would use them on stainless knives just in case. Cause I've heard it's a no, no, like don't do it for stain. But I mean, if air does get in into the ADCRV, like so what cares? Who cares? Right. But yeah, I would totally do. Yeah. I've done that before and use them. Yeah.
00:48:18
Speaker
So that's something I'm going to I'm going to try because I don't I haven't got so so many mixed opinions on the anti scale that it's. That I'm like, well, maybe I'll just try to use this. I'm going to have it. The shit's fucking expensive. It'd be nice to get some more use out of it. So that's kind of what I'm going to do. But like you were saying, I had the worst. Worst time with with what it ended up being was decar. Yeah, I mean, we you and I kind of went through this for
00:48:48
Speaker
long time like reheat treating and you know doing it my way at your shop and then kind of coming up with the same thing and then following your exact recipe and but it all it was was it was just fucking decar we were just getting crazy readings across a blade like one part would be hard one part would be soft and we're like yeah it's nuts
00:49:11
Speaker
And it came down to, it was just D-Carb on the blade. It was just D-Carb. And that ADRC RV too was insane. Dennis has an HRC tester, but we also, both of us have the little files, the hardness files that are for the quick and dirty. And we were putting in
00:49:33
Speaker
some deep grooves in that. And yeah, I remember putting like the big channel like, yeah. And I was like, Good God, this is so just that kind of shit is so discouraging for me, right? Because you can do all you want. It's just if it's not a, you know, it's not hard and it's not a knife. Yeah, but shit, sure, she would go through the whole process. And I, you know, I grind through. And
00:49:58
Speaker
We re harden it and the shit was in in the 60. Yeah, it's like this is great. I love this. It was. It was good for our mental because I was going a little stir crazy there for a bit when I was like, what what's going on? Like, why are you not able to harden these things? What is going on? And it was just you. It was just you. And it just just the fact of not. And that's kind of why I stopped.
00:50:28
Speaker
doing the uh uh it's eluding me post post grind oh yeah so it's up grinding i used to um grind post heat treat but i would want to check the hardness and i would be getting you know these crazy numbers and stuff so i stopped doing that and started doing some pre pre-veveling before um
00:50:54
Speaker
And it is what it is. Your process is your process. But for my sanity, I think it's kind of worked out to where I'm going to take a little bit off and go. But back in the day, I can't remember the kid's name. He came over to your spot when you had that maker get together in the summer. Malachi? Malachi.
00:51:23
Speaker
Is he true, true, true, but yeah, yeah. So I had reached out to him a long time ago and he's going to school for metallurgy. And, you know, it's kind of he's doing his thing there. And he kept just telling me, he's like, just grind, grind into it. It's going to be fine. And I'm like, I don't want to waste this. But yeah, so that I'm kind of rounding it all back up. It was a good video. I think I like what you added to it.
00:51:51
Speaker
And I just want to point out that this is a process that never ends, right? There's always new information. There's always, you know, bad and good information. And the process is always being refined. And to keep us updated, you know, with that is a good service, I think you do for the community. So that's to have one place to go and kind of be able to data dump, you know,
00:52:20
Speaker
Download from you know, all the different types of stuff. So It's a great video man. Thank you and I I even had speak in a D car so I was doing and One one of the issues and this is why I I remember when I was doing this why I hate doing fittings in Damascus because of course When you do a guard or something like that in Damascus, you have to heat treat it right so
00:52:50
Speaker
You got to heat treat it and then you kind of want to finish grinding it. And then I'm heat treating it. So I put the condersal on it and then hung it to dry. Well, the condersal, just the way of like, usually I dip it. I let it dry, right? Cause I don't want any decarb. I don't want to have to like do massive grinding on, um, on the guard because, and you know, if you have decarb on a piece of Damascus, it's going to etch white.
00:53:20
Speaker
Okay. Whereas you want the Damascus to be, you know, you're going to have one spot that just looks terrible because it's decard. So the Condersal, just the way it's a liquid and just the way it flows, the very edges don't, they kind of, it doesn't, the Condersal isn't very thick. So the, when I, when I etched the guard, the edges all around the guard were white.
00:53:50
Speaker
I ended up having to do this thing four times. At first I just tried sanding it. And then nope, or I got a little bit. Then I went to the grinder with like a 600 grit belt. It took me four rounds of sanding it, dunking it, making sure. And so I'm going to have to be extra careful when I do the guard for the fittings for the Viking sword.
00:54:20
Speaker
That one's even more problematic because it's going to have inlay. So it's not like I can do a ton of grinding after. I might actually dip it in Condersal a couple of times and let it dry each time so it's got a good thick layer because I don't give a crap how hard it is. It can be 55. I don't care. I just need to make sure it's hard so that the Damascus shows up but I don't
00:54:47
Speaker
You know, I don't want the, uh, maybe I'll even put it in foil. I don't know. I've never put fittings in foil before. Hmm. I think to be enough air in the pot and the pocket that, uh, that probably wouldn't work anyway, but I don't know. It's a pain in the butt.
00:55:05
Speaker
Yeah, it seriously it made me and I didn't really talk about this process and I know Kyle Royer just switched to it and Rick Rick is set up for salt, a salt bath. And if you've never heard of or used a salt bath before, I've never used one, but dangerous, right? It can be. So for everyone, um,
00:55:32
Speaker
What you do is you have basically molten salt that you can heat up to 1500, 1600 degrees. And you're guaranteed to have no oxygen, right? Because it's molten salt. You don't have to worry about decarb. You don't have to worry about putting some like you can put stainless in it. You don't have to put it in a pack or anything like that. And it comes out like sparkly crystal clean.
00:56:01
Speaker
Because there's zero oxygen. The issue is that if there's any condensation or water on your blade, you know, think of if you're making french fries on the stove and you drop a piece of water, you drop a little water in it, you can actually have it erupt like Vesuvius. And I know Mike Vagnino's had an issue. He had used to use a salt bath and he's had had that happen.
00:56:30
Speaker
But I really like, if you haven't watched Kyle's video when he treated his griffin sword, he's got a, Jeff, his dad built the salt thing and it's got a little tube that just goes down into like where it heats the salt. So you're not actually going into the salt, you're just going into the heat to burn off all condensation and then he goes in the salt, which I thought was an ingenious idea. Maybe they all come with that, I don't know.
00:57:00
Speaker
So really got me thinking like, Oh, maybe someday I'm going to switch to a salt immersion, heat treating system, but not right now. Don't have the shop space, but that would be ideal to have a big vertical salt bath big enough to do like swords or something like that. That'd be pretty cool. Hmm. I've never seen it. So Rick's got one and I haven't seen it run, but I've seen it. And, uh,
00:57:30
Speaker
It's pretty cool. Scares, scares the bejesus out of me, but, uh, just cause it's like the unknown, but yeah. So that kind of, kind of is a good, a good segue into the YouTube comment of the week. And it's not a bitchy comment this time. I figured I would say I would do a nice comment. And this one was more of a question statement.
00:57:58
Speaker
um on the heat treating video and uh um it someone had this is probably a reply to a comment but um it was basically about how ridiculous things are unfortunate fire and uh so it's this is from dude storm 86 and he says
00:58:20
Speaker
So not only are the fireballs unnecessary, unfortunate fire, but it seemed that three hours they get in the first round is as well, because this is kind of a question. How in the hell did they fit normalizing and annealing in before the quench if it takes 12 plus hours alone for one of those processes? They always quench at the end of that three hour limit and it sounds like both of those processes need to be done before the dip, he means quench.
00:58:50
Speaker
I guess it's either just Hollywood creating the smoke and mirrors with a fake time limit to make it more exciting for the viewer, or I'm missing something in the logistics. Well, folks, 95% of people do not normalize and grain refine on fortune fire. Hence so many blades breaking. Once in a while you get someone doing a thermo cycle and, uh, you know, heating up and cooling their blade, but it's pretty rare. Yeah.
00:59:20
Speaker
And, uh, if, um, I've, I've, you know, we were talking, I forget where it was, maybe maker camp or something like that. And Jane Nielsen was talking about how he doesn't understand why, but 80% of the people on that show, and it's not like it's super bright lights or anything like that, but 80 people, 80% of people on that show. Forge weight. I mean, uh, quench way too hot. Yep.
00:59:50
Speaker
Like I, I've seen it. You guys have probably seen it. Like things at forge welding temperature go into the oil. Like, you know, those are the ones that are cracking on the first blow. Yeah. And they'll tell you too. I mean, they're, they're actually, Oh, it's too high. You get the, the six foot fireball as soon as the, uh, the blade touches the oil. So yeah, that is not good.
01:00:20
Speaker
And it's, if you, when you, when you get an oven and you take a blade out of the oven at 1500 degrees, it looks so much like it's so much duller red than what people think. Yep. Right. It is not that bright orange that people are hitting the oil with on fortune fire. Yeah.
01:00:43
Speaker
I mean, it's still cool. If you haven't seen it before, it's still like, whoa, but yeah, it's not like the sun. Yeah. For the layperson, it looks super hot, but absolutely for, uh, you know, you've done it a few times and it, it doesn't look, uh, it doesn't look all that special, but, uh, yeah, that was the heat treating video. Then the final grind video just touched on a few more grinding topics. Um,
01:01:14
Speaker
Yeah, and hand sanding showed the sander in that video. And yeah, I'm all set up to do. I'm actually going to do the etching. I'm sorry, the acid etch. I'm actually going to do an acid etch on the beginner knife just because it's easy and it looks good. And why not show an extra process? So that'll be in this week's video along with applying the handle skills.
01:01:41
Speaker
You know what I did notice on this on the on the final grinding video that I. Think was really cool, and I think you kind of just glazed over it, but I saw you actually taking some kind of measurement. Some point of reference on your rest to how far you leaned over the belt from left to right when you were putting in your final plunge.
01:02:11
Speaker
on the swoop. Yeah, I actually talked about that in the first grinding video and I typically, I will hang the belt over the width of the steel that I'm using. So if the steel is three sixteenths, I'll typically hang the belt over three sixteenths. If it's quarter inch, I'll hang the belt over a quarter inch. It's just mentally something that I do so that I know it's the same on both sides. I'll actually just take the blade
01:02:38
Speaker
up to it. So like I'll take the back of the back of the handle so that I know it's the same on both sides and that gives me the the kind of curve on the uh on the bevel that I want on the plunge line. Yeah and I saw you like put like a like a straight edge down or something you did something and I was like is that what he's doing like you were matching it on something on the rest I thought anyways I was gonna ask you about it because that's something that yeah stupid as it sounds like I
01:03:08
Speaker
I am meticulous about one side, but then somewhere during the grinding, when I get to the other side, you know, I could easily go past it and then be like, fuck man, and then, you know, go redo all that. Yeah, and there's so many of these things that I, you know, once you've done it so many times, you just do what you forget to tell people. And in this one, in doing the final grinding, what I'll do is,
01:03:36
Speaker
I'll do the top of the plunge line. I'll make that the way I want it. And then I'll go to the other side and I'll make that the way I want it. Okay. So that they both match. Okay. And then I'll go back and thin the edge and kind of feather that in. But all my pressure is near the edge so that
01:04:01
Speaker
I'm not just grinding the whole face of the bevel because that's how you get like it edges up on both sides. Once I get the top of the bevel where I want it, then I'm mostly on the edge and I'm really paying attention to just feathering that up to the top of the bevel, but never after it. So that's just what works for me and then I can
01:04:30
Speaker
really concentrate on getting that edge down to like, I'm really, especially lately, I've really tried to, to make sure that edge thickness is not more than like 10,000, 15,000 at the most for like a hunter or something like that. Chef knives, of course, those have to be really, really like seven or eight thousands at the most.
01:05:00
Speaker
which is super thin, like even trying to get it down to zero, but that's tough. And then make it the same all the way down the edge. But. Yeah, I'm trying. I'm trying to play with that. That's a good point, because that that paring knife that you were we were talking about last week that I ground that. Fuck, nine months ago, a long time ago.
01:05:29
Speaker
It was, it was right after I came home from the foundry. So, um, but when I was looking at that thing, I'm like, Oh my God, that's like, like a silver dollar on the edge. Jared, what the hell are you doing? It's pretty damn thick. I'm exaggerating, but it's a, it's something that, you know, I think you, you get more confident as you know, you get more behind you and you start dare to go thinner, dare to go thinner. And.
01:05:57
Speaker
uh, realizing the, the need for it. So, um, that, that was a good point. And in going too thin though, too quick is something I think we all do, right? Yeah. That just leads to washing those lines up, which is why Mr. Echo blades over here has a lot of flat, flat grinds or, or, or worse, you get that dreaded blue spot on the edge of the blade. That's way worse. Yeah.
01:06:26
Speaker
And that's what I said about the sword. I was having such a pain in the ass with that sword with the bevel that changed angle as it gets closer to the tip. It was really hard. I had to move my finger as I was pressing it. And I was like, I am not going to deal with this again on a higher grit. And I actually didn't. I told you I was going to handstand that whole thing
01:06:54
Speaker
It probably took me five hours to hand sand that thing, both sides to 220. So it wasn't that bad for a 30 inch blade with a fuller in the center. So I was totally okay putting in the five hours and getting that thing hand sanded. I can hear Brent and the production guys like groaning their heads off right now, but it's Damascus and it has to be done.
01:07:26
Speaker
Yeah, that's I respect the shit out of that though cuz a lot of people say what you can do and what you should do. But when I used to, I just distinctly remember being so fed up with hand sanding from 36 and you're like, dude, that's all I used to do cuz I just didn't trust myself on the grinds. And then to hear you do it now, it's like, fuck.
01:07:54
Speaker
He's really that's that's the real deal. You know what I mean? It's either that or try to get brave and fuck all that progress up already. Yeah, and this is too big of a of a construction that I just the last thing my wife wants to hear is me screaming from the shop that I made some catastrophic error on that blade because there's no going back. There's no smaller sword. So yeah, I
01:08:25
Speaker
aired on the side of caution on that one. Well, shit. So I also got to to do. So Jeff and I made this hammer holder. And out of the like some PVC tubes and we put it on a centerpiece that spins around and. Wanted it vertical.
01:08:54
Speaker
Right. We're in my fucking shop to put it like the video that I took of it. It was locked in a vice and kind of was spinning around and making cool slow mo video shit of it. But it's not functionally able to fit in my shop like that. So I we ended up hanging it horizontally and probably should have made the tubes a little longer because that
01:09:22
Speaker
The tubes are bigger than the handles. So they want to. Can't up, right? They're not falling out. It works perfectly fine. But as you're spinning it, you got like hammers start. And and we did it like a bunch of times and nothing. It's fine, right? But it was like we probably should have made those tubes is a little longer to kind of catch catch them on the further down the handle end.
01:09:50
Speaker
Uh, but it was, it was funny. So, but I did, uh, save one spot there for my, um, upcoming, uh, two bastards played. I mean, um, hammer, um, that's in the works here. So, um, and speaking of them, you know, if you're in the market for a hammer right now, I would suggest you go and check out two bastards, Texas, Smithy and supplies over at two bastards hammer.
01:10:17
Speaker
NIG, uh, Nita and Frank have been supplying black Smith's and bladesmiths with all their hammer needs for over six years. If you're looking for your next professional hammer, check out the genuine two bastards, fat, peen, cross peen, diagonal, peen, hand forged dog heads, and a bunch of varieties. They restore hammers and tools all here in the U S and it's all high quality. Oh, they also.
01:10:45
Speaker
have high quality ventures tools imported from UK and Germany and even Austria. So make sure you go check them out, all right? I've never seen a guy that likes to talk about hammers more than Frank. So you want to talk hammers, you give Frank a call, he will talk your ear off about hammers. I am so pumped to meet that guy at Blade here. I've had a couple of conversations with him and I'm excited to finally get to meet him. Yeah, yeah, me too.
01:11:16
Speaker
So we'll go right into, uh, for everything else, knife making related, go to maritime knife supply, steel, abrasives, handle material, G10, wood, you name it. They got it. Uh, I get, I get epoxy pins. There isn't, I can't think of something that, that Lawrence doesn't have. And if he doesn't have it, give him a call, send him an email.
01:11:46
Speaker
He'll try to get it. So he's a maker himself. Jared and I have been done forging sessions with Lawrence at Maker Camp. Great dude. Good looking guy. Wait a minute. Wait the fuck a minute. I had to say that. That's a little self-serving right there.
01:12:12
Speaker
It's Dennis's brother. Yeah, that's my brother from another mother. That's my Canadian brother. Yeah. Yeah. So go, go, go. Give two bastards a maritime knife supply some love. They got what you need. Definitely, definitely. Twist, twist. Can't clamps are back. Can't twist clamps. Twist, can't, can't. They're back.
01:12:42
Speaker
Yeah, that's a must have in the shop. Can't twist clamps. Say right, dude. Yeah. Twist can't claps. All right. Why don't we cover maker spotlight and we'll wrap this sucker up. So I'll do mine first. And this is a maker that I've known for a couple of years. We were in the same journeyman class.
01:13:10
Speaker
Nick or from or customs just doing some amazing work And if you don't follow Nick at or customs or our Customs you definitely need to go check them out The one thing that really caught my eye lately that I thought was a really cool idea You know, we've all you know, we've seen locking mechanisms on folders and stuff like that Nick came up with a locking mechanism for a fixed blade where
01:13:39
Speaker
You could, I think it's the back, I don't exactly remember where the release is on it, like back of the palm or something like that. But you can push this down and remove the handle and the guard altogether. It's such a cool design. And you can swap out a different handle or you can clean the blade, sharpen the blade, re-etch the blade. I just thought it was a really cool idea.
01:14:08
Speaker
for a fixed plate. And yeah, okay, it's not something you're gonna use every day, but it was really cool. And Nick does some just amazing Damascus. He's working on this complex Damascus. It almost looks like dragonfly wings, but- Yeah, I'm looking at it right now. It's vision. Yeah. So yeah, go check out Nick. At the time, how many is he got? Yeah, he's got-
01:14:35
Speaker
1119 followers right now, so go push that number up and go check out Nick. He's a journeyman, so he's passed the test. He does some really nice work. Yeah, he was a lot less nervous than you, too, that day. Everybody was a lot less nervous than me. Even the couple guys that failed were less nervous than me. Oh my God, that was awesome. Great experience, guys.
01:15:04
Speaker
You ever get to see Dennis freaking out? Yeah. Freak the fuck out. It was a top notch entertainment. Yeah. I'm going to tell nobody when I go for master so that I don't have to deal with that. Yeah. So who do you got this week? So I got I just came across this. I want to say that I've heard him on another deal, but Stuart handmade knives.
01:15:30
Speaker
Um, he is a 15 year old maker out of Toronto, Canada. Yeah. And when I saw you picked him, I was really mad because I was going to use this one on a future one. Yeah. Well, you can't, he's from my hometown. Damn it. This kid is just murdering it right now. I mean, absolutely murdering. I'm looking at daggers, hormones, uh, just
01:16:00
Speaker
folder. I mean, I'm, I am in awe right now of everything that I'm, I'm seeing that is coming out of this dude, this, this fucking keyhole. Um, dude, I'm just. Yeah. Spiral fluted, quillion daggers. Um, just, I couldn't imagine a 15 year old at this level. I can't imagine an adult.
01:16:26
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, there's some, I know a lot of good makers and I'm, this kid is just amazing, man. I just, I hats off to you, but that, that is, you're doing some good stuff. So yeah. And only 530 followers. That's a shame. Looking at his, like roughly looking from Instagram, but this kid could go for his journeyman. Like he really could, like his stuff is just super clean.
01:16:57
Speaker
Um, I've never even done a keyhole. It's on my list. I was going to dabble in them this year, but this kid's already done it. Um, so yeah, go, go check them out. Yeah. Just really cool stuff. And, and, and the best thing about it is, you know, it's, you know, another thing about, uh, Lawrence is, is the sponsorship programs for, you know, the center, um, or the new England,
01:17:25
Speaker
school of metal arts and all those things like that. But you know, the future of our I want to say sport. I have said that so many times the future of the sport is yeah, but our craft that's fine. I'll take that is, you know, is in good hands with, you know, kids like this. So I wish there was more more of it. So that's good stuff.
01:17:55
Speaker
Yep. So, uh, I want to end the show. Just, just totally knife, not related to knife making this, uh, yesterday we tape on Sunday. So Saturday night I went into San Francisco with my wife and, um, we started the night we went to a restaurant called the stinking Rose. Are you familiar stinking Rose? I'm familiar with it. Yes. So for everybody else, this is a restaurant that specializes in garlic. So everything has like
01:18:25
Speaker
I shit ton of garlic in it. We had a pretty good. It's pretty good staple in the city. Yeah, we had like the appetizer garlic, whatever we were going afterwards to a comedy show. We went to see Christopher Titus. If you don't know who that is, look them up hilarious, you get a chance to go see a show, go see it. But the whole time we're having dinner and we're scarfing down garlic, I'm thinking we're gonna blow the
01:18:55
Speaker
fuck out of everybody at the comedy show with like massive garlic farts. Farts? Cause we knew it was about two hours later and there's four of us. We went with my wife's friends and that's all I can think of. It's like, we're going to be blowing people up at the show. Oh man. I thought you were just going to kill them with your laughter. I didn't know you were going to fucking bark at them out of the back end. That's goodness. I didn't, but uh,
01:19:26
Speaker
That's funny. But yeah, that was that was pretty fun. Cool. Yeah. So go go check out Christopher Titus. It was it was a really I I've seen a lot of comedians and I don't remember laughing quite that hard as I did last night. It was would you go to the to where do you see him at? Cobb at the Cobb. Yeah. Cobb Comedy Center there, which is way bigger than I thought. Yeah, it doesn't look big on the inside.
01:19:57
Speaker
It was pretty big. It was way more tables than like Tommy T's and Pleasanton or something like that. Oh, yeah. Yeah. But on the outside, it's on the corner, right? Oh, yeah. Yeah. From the outside. Yeah. It doesn't look good at all. Yeah. No. That's already lying there. Oh, really? Yeah. Oh, I read his book, Too Fat to Fish. That was pretty funny. Yeah. It was good. I hope you're doing good, Artie. I know you're listening. That would be funny. That would be good. Right.
01:20:28
Speaker
All right, man. You got your haircut before you went on your trip? I did. I got it on Friday after we did all our stuff. So just for everyone else, I have this running joke with Jared. Jared gets fucking haircut. I swear every seven days, every time I talk to him, he's getting a haircut. He gets more haircuts than any man on the planet. I'm pretty sure.
01:20:57
Speaker
I'm positive. Two weeks is the standard. I'm curious, guys. Yeah, if you're out there, I mean, I'm happily married for many, many, many years, but I got to keep it good for, you know. Who gets a haircut every two weeks? Everyone I know. You don't know. Everyone I know. Everyone I know. This has been my whole life that has been the routine.
01:21:22
Speaker
Okay. I want everyone to message in triple T podcasts on IG and no, send it to the triple T T K F P at email.com. No, surely, but that's doing it. I want to hear how many people.
01:21:43
Speaker
What's the over under? How many people are over and how many people are under on two weeks? I'm thinking 44. If you're older, 44 years old, your opinion is out. Oh, everyone that's my age and younger hit me up. Two weeks. No way. Two weeks. Gotta keep it fresh, man. Gotta keep it fresh. Uh-uh. I'm lucky if I go two months. I don't know. I don't have to tell you.
01:22:11
Speaker
I guess I'm just not a looker like you. I mean, I got a face for radio, but a haircut for TV boy. Oh man. All right. With that, we're going to close the show. All right. Yeah.

Instagram's Impact on Knife Content

01:22:28
Speaker
I got to get up in like two hours. So yeah, you guys have a good one. Get some sleep. Thanks brother.
01:22:35
Speaker
Psych, we're not done yet. I got some more stuff that we need to say, and I don't want to go to sleep sleep. Um, so dude, I, during all this stuff, we were talking about, um, the I G situation that we're currently going through and.
01:22:55
Speaker
I understand everybody's frustrations. I understand everybody's got a different opinion on how we're going to get through this and what it all means and what it's about. But I did have a phone conversation with Brent over at Baldman who actually got to talk to a live person. And the news is a little
01:23:22
Speaker
disheartening and kind of discouraging. So I have some... Basically what it came down to was I'm trying to find this little deal here. It says that he was explaining his situation that this is a tool and it's not a weapon and why are we being singled out? And he goes, the lady came back and basically said that
01:23:52
Speaker
You know, we understand what you're saying, but however, this is under the policies and this can be detected as by the system as weapons. And that doesn't mean that, um, there's no recourses for your business, but it's.
01:24:07
Speaker
a part of our ever updating policies and guidelines. And now these things are now in violation of those and basically saying, tough shit, this is what it's going to be. The suggestions were to blur the knife out. Don't show anything that's got an edge or that is pointy. Also, some suggestions on upping your account age to over 21 and a couple of other
01:24:37
Speaker
But there's, okay, but let's pause there. How do you do that? How do you even update your account to over 21? I would gladly do that. Yeah, same here. So there's a process in the account settings. But yeah, it says we regularly review our policies to identify areas where we can improve. As part of this efforts, we've decided to make some changes in which weapons and their accessories are advertised on Instagram.
01:25:05
Speaker
For this, we highly suggest trying to change the age of your audience or blurring out or avoiding showing sharp objects on your post. Get creative. I want to know how to do that, how to change the age of your audience. I got a link. I got a link here somewhere.
01:25:26
Speaker
So we should put that down in the show notes because I would gladly do that. Set the age of my audience to 21 or over because I've, believe me folks, I've read the guidelines with a fine tooth comb. And the only thing the guidelines say is that knives can't be shown to people under the age of 18. And I always figured, well, you guys, Instagram, you know, the age of the people that are looking. So just don't show it to them.
01:25:57
Speaker
Yeah. But apparently they updated them. And this is not just a glitch in the matrix that it is actually something that they're they're doing. So if you are appealing your post right now, which I have done as well. And I have not been successful in getting any of them removed. So the plan is good. Do you think I just found it. So if you go under settings and activity,
01:26:28
Speaker
Shit. No, I just lost it. Where did it go? Crap. Keep talking. I'll find it again because now it reset it and now I don't know where it is. OK, so yeah, the. Point we were trying to make is that it doesn't seem like it's a, you know, just like a glitch and
01:26:57
Speaker
We're going to have to either figure something out, basically get creative and find ways to show what we're doing without actually showing the knives. Yeah. Here it is. So if you go to settings and activity, assuming you have a professional account, okay, under for professionals, there is a section called creator tools and controls. If you go in there,
01:27:25
Speaker
and then there's a minimum age. Okay, so under minimum age, it says you can add a default and it says set a minimum age for people everywhere. So I'm gonna add minimum age of 21 and hit done. So I wonder what that's gonna do. If that's all it takes,
01:27:53
Speaker
I don't give a crap if anyone under the age of 21 can't see my posts. I will gladly set a minimum age of 21 if they're going to promote my knives to anyone 21 and over. Correct. I think it's probably a lot of us will agree with that.
01:28:15
Speaker
If that's all it takes, I don't want to say like lead that that was an option that they gave as a way to move past. But the other one was to blur your knives. As well. Which is insane. Yeah, that's like. Just don't post knives, then. So but yeah, like I said, I talk talk with them today and
01:28:44
Speaker
He was, uh, you know, cause the other part is a lot of people have been removing the verified tag, that service that's been kind of like a mass exodus out of there, which I fully support. I never did it. So something I didn't have to do, but you know, giving money to this, uh, platform.
01:29:04
Speaker
and still not being able to reach somebody to discuss. I mean, he's like one of the few I haven't heard of anybody that's actually got to somebody. So either he was super proficient or lucky as fuck and and got somebody. Well, I did talk to someone else who said they did call. And I don't remember who it was now. You know, I got a memory like a sieve, but they said they basically got a, you know,
01:29:34
Speaker
A token answer. I felt like it was like a form letter answer, but it didn't have that information that you just said about set the minimum age. You know, who obviously, you know, not showing knives or blurring them is dumb. Um, we're not going to do that. But, um, if setting the minimum age works, that is like the best news ever, but I did it. It hasn't made a difference yet.
01:30:05
Speaker
but I don't know if I need to wait or what's going on. So I'm gonna check on in that in a couple of days and see if anything has changed. So that's interesting, something to go on at least. Yeah, I mean, it's the most solid information that I've heard other than some buddies
01:30:32
Speaker
um, difference of opinion or, you know, theories and we're creative people. So I've heard a lot of shit to say the least. So I was happy to hear something. I was bummed more than anything because, um, you know, it's not just a glitch that it was, I guess, the first time around. So yeah, that's, um, and it's weird that everything went away for a while.
01:31:01
Speaker
That's the weird part because we kind of all thought that, well, maybe it was just a bug. Like I said, there, she specifically said they're constantly updating their guidelines and this is a new, newer update to those and the, this falls under a violation. So yeah, but it's only a violation when showing to someone under the age of 21.
01:31:28
Speaker
So I'm really curious if this is going to have anything. It's going to have any change. Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, guys, go check it out and see what it is. If you're willing to do so, I would do it. I did it. We'll see how it goes. But if that's not the case, then the only thing to do to get rid of that is to is to remove the content that has been flagged, because if you remove them,
01:31:59
Speaker
It's like they have a whole backlog of everything that's like pointy, ready to flag you right after that. Yeah, but I mean, now, reading their guidelines, now that I can set a minimum age, I don't get why they would ever block anything, like for what we post. Right. Yeah, so hopefully that's the
01:32:24
Speaker
That's a viable solution. Yeah. And, you know, cross cross platforms. I was talking to, you know, because a couple of people this weekend, Nick and I don't know if I was talking with Sean, but, you know, there's other there's other platforms out there and you should be trying to utilize as much as you can to to not be solely dependent on one, you know, forum to get our stuff out. So

Exploring Multiple Platforms for Content

01:32:48
Speaker
yeah, I'm not on TikTok. Are you on TikTok? Are you having? Do you have any issues?
01:32:54
Speaker
No, I haven't had any issues on TikTok. And for whatever reason, my TikTok is almost as big as what little following I have on Instagram. It's very similar with IG in about half the time, too. But I really don't put a lot of effort into it, because I'm lazy. So I need to do more.
01:33:21
Speaker
do. Yeah. But I don't know. I've never heard about anybody making any any kind of sales on Tiktok. But I have. Yeah. I can't remember too but I think I've heard the opposite. Like some people are have actually made more. Oh really? Yeah. What that is I don't know but I I heard the opposite of that because that was another um something else but they're about to ban it and in our country anyway so. I don't know about that. We'll see. They'll probably change something but
01:33:52
Speaker
All right. Well, that's promising. That's the promising, most promising news I've heard, um, in a while about Instagram. We'll see if it makes any difference. Yeah. Shout out Brent. Thanks for sharing that. Thanks for the call. Yeah. Really, really appreciate that. I think, uh, our 11 listeners are going to be super, super pumped to hear this information. And if that works, then Brent, you're, you're, you're the superhero for finding that out.
01:34:21
Speaker
All right. All right, man. That was the bonus episode. All right, cool. All right, brother. Thanks, buddy.
