England's Nation League Performance

00:00:09
AFC Bournemouth
Hi, everyone. Welcome back to your daily Bournemouth podcast. And this episode is a International Break edition, as we've just seen England play two Nation League games and have been able to have been able, sorry, if I can talk this evening, because I'm recording this on Sunday evening. You're probably listening to this on a Monday morning. Anyway. Watched England.
00:00:39
AFC Bournemouth
get two wins in the past week during an international break. And so yeah, this episode is going to be an international break focused episode, looking at both of those games, as I did promise you that earlier this week, if you listened to my episode earlier in the week.
00:00:56
AFC Bournemouth
I yeah gave a preview to these two games and was a little bit, I guess like in in reflection, doubtful if England would score enough goals on the goal difference side because I was kind of worried about that like if Greece and England followed on the same level of points then it would come down to goal difference and at the time when I did the episode Greece's goal difference was just a little bit better than England's but after seeing England's you know score a handful of goals actually just in
00:01:29
AFC Bournemouth
this evening's game here on Sunday evening and then obviously beat Greece as well, convincingly then I look a little bit stupid now but and anyway that was before I knew what would happen and so think you know most people that I spoke to going into these games expected England to win but you know the goal scoring was probably maybe a little bit of a question like if you look beforehand so before air with these games in the nation's league, you know, a couple of more close knit kind of performances I would guess, you know, for example,
00:02:05
AFC Bournemouth
to be Ireland 5-0 and that was the first time like that's happened in this group stage. So we'll score to five goals I should say. So yeah you know great second half performance this evening and I'm going to start there because I've just watched that game and I i will admit that I didn't actually watch the Greece game. Just kind of got a feeling of how the game unfolded from some highlights and also what people were saying about the game but in terms of the game this evening here on Sunday evening because again I am recording this on Sunday evening very good second half performance made 10 times easier by the red card first half very disappointing performance I thought Ireland definitely held their own and defensively were solid a couple of kind of countertop breaks here and there but didn't really test Pickford um um and
00:02:58
AFC Bournemouth
Madaweke had a couple, you know, in like from an England perspective, a couple of dangerous situations here and there, but again, didn't really test. Oh, and the Kyle Walker header, but apart from that, first half, Ireland would be...

Impact of Red Card on Match Dynamics

00:03:15
AFC Bournemouth
going into halftime like the much more happier team you know and they definitely needed to pick up their second half performance and you know the red card happened and that just made things 10 times easier after that happened after hurricane scored the penalty put it past holland's goalkeeper ah who who actually saved penalty in Allens winning the Finland then you know there was just like that was it six minutes I think where it was just you know three goals and England were top of the group basically you know Allen weren't going to come back from that so red cards changed everything from an Allen perspective you know if there's any
00:04:00
AFC Bournemouth
Irish people or fans out there get in touch over on the Gram. I think it's GSPM Bournemouth you can reach us on. What do you make of that second half? And so like from my perspective, while going down to 10 minutes, it's hard like
00:04:19
AFC Bournemouth
can capitulating like that is always going to be a little bit disappointing. So, you know, you just want to kind of get through like, okay, let's just say the penalty goes in and you want to get throughout the next 10 minutes without conceding. then, you know, when the second and the third goes in, it's just.
00:04:36
AFC Bournemouth
really really difficult then so overall red card change game first half performance very disappointing but then England just like runs it up right some first time goal scorers on the score sheet which is pleasing to see and then England was able to make the the changes and kind of bring on some Some players who don't really have an international experience Rogers, etc and just yeah coast to 5-0 victory. So that was literally how from my perspective the game went and it means that Yeah, England in the nation's league can actually test themselves against the other big nations and the big boys and
00:05:19
AFC Bournemouth
I think when the nation comes around again and then you know that just leaves to the question of How will Thomas Tuchel's England ah

Coaching Transition: Carsley to Tuchel

00:05:30
AFC Bournemouth
evolve? Because that was leave Lee Carsey's last game as interim ah head coach. And so he will now go back to the under 20 ones. So we're expecting that to happen. So so yeah, you know that's Lee Carsey's short reign over.
00:05:50
AFC Bournemouth
But before we kind of end on that and kind of what next for but England, let's go back to first they get Thursday's game. Now, before we do so, I will take a quick break and then we'll get back and we'll talk about that game again before we actually do that. I didn't actually see the game, so I'm kind of, well, I'm going to be giving my thoughts on from what I've kind of seen and heard and and stuff from more of an outsider's, I guess, perspective. But anyway, let's take a quick break and then we will do that.

AFC Bournemouth
Okay guys, so welcome back to this International Break episode, Match Wrap episode as well because over the last few days, England have been in action and have been able to score eight goals in those two games. And for context,
00:07:26
AFC Bournemouth
In the other four games, they scored eight goals because they scored three against Finland, two out away, two at home against Finland, two away in the game in Dublin, and then one at home against Greece. So I make that, I think, I make that eight if my maths is good. And they were able to score eight in the two games.
00:07:46
AFC Bournemouth
in this last international break of the year, which many people might be saying yay about. Anyway, getting back to the first game of this international break that I did not see. okay So forgive me if what I'm about to share with you is a little bit, maybe not accurate because I didn't actually see the game, but from what I can tell from the vibe,
00:08:10
AFC Bournemouth
much proven performance compared with when Greece came to London to Wembley. Good to see Ollie Watkins get on the good on the score sheet and Curtis Jones who I believe was but will put in a manner of match performance in that game and was amazing and got his goal that was just reward basically.
00:08:31
AFC Bournemouth
much better performance from what I heard and kind of seen in a little bit on the highlights. Obviously knew Harry Kane because Watkins died, which made the
00:08:45
AFC Bournemouth
Attacking line more dynamic. There was more pace up there Apparently the two wide players were were really really good in that game as well and just an overall much free-flowing game Gordon on one side and by the way key on the other and And yeah, you know, that's that's basically the vibe I got from this game and was able to score three goals.

England vs Greece: Statistical Analysis

00:09:10
AFC Bournemouth
Although some quarters said that why did the Bellingham goal go down as an own goal? So that was interesting. no goalkeeper wants their name on the score sheet as an own goal, right? So yeah, just like give it to the the striker. But anyway,
00:09:29
AFC Bournemouth
so overall in this game, a much more, a much better performance. As I said, not really that much to sound it because I didn't actually watch it. But then just looking over the match stats, you know, more possession than Greece, probably not too surprising.
00:09:44
AFC Bournemouth
didn't actually get caught offside, committed less fouls, better pass accuracy, although had one less shot. So make of that what you will. So that put England very much in the driving seat, going ahead into the game beforehand, before the break that I was kind of sharing sharing about and kind of more sharing my thoughts about because I did actually see that game adjust. So that's kind of just finished at the time of recording this.
00:10:12
AFC Bournemouth
So, put England in the driving seat, obviously went into the Ireland game, as we've been discussing, done the job. So then this leaves England to top of the group on goal difference, right? So that goal difference has come into effect, you know, with 16 goals, four, three goals, again, it's goal difference of plus 13 compared to Greece's plus seven, because they also, this ah evening, beat Finland. So really, really important that not only we beat Greece in Athens, but also was able to score three and then score five, you know, in in the game just just finished or yesterday, depending on your listing to this.
00:10:53
AFC Bournemouth
So overall, the job has been done. Made a little bit slightly a bit more difficult that defeat to Rhys at Wembley. But overall, Lee Carsley has done his job in these games. And I'm going to give some final thoughts on what the future England could

Expectations for Tuchel's England Tenure

00:11:11
AFC Bournemouth
look like. Now, Lee Carsley is going back to the under 21s and has sorry done his job or done the job but that was asked of him.

Okay, welcome back to your Bournemouth. Daily Bournemouth podcast, International Break Match Rap Episode Edition, if that makes sense. Anyway, England have been playing, we have reviewed the two games. and They have played in this International Break, no more International Breaks now until March, so we can celebrate about that. But moving on to what a future England could potentially look like, because now, as I've said a few times, Lee Carsey is back.
00:12:53
AFC Bournemouth
to the end of the 21s, done his job with the senior team and what's being asked of him. Thomas Tuchel comes in. Now what to expect? I don't really know, you know.
00:13:08
AFC Bournemouth
what to What to expect? That's that's the million dollar dollarlar question. I think Thomas Leishaw is obviously, you know, if you're listening to this, you've been in the football world long enough to know that he is a winner, right? Like demands a lot of his players.
00:13:23
AFC Bournemouth
but the first time entering international management, like how is is he going to adapt to that, which is why my incline is unpleasant. And actually they said in the press conference they've done a few weeks back why it's a the the the length of the contract is where it is until the end of the next World Cup, right? So I think that makes sense. And then like, see how it goes, right? Like the lead England into the World Cup and with the expectation of winning the World Cup, to be honest, especially given the range of talent, and then kind of see
00:14:00
AFC Bournemouth
how it goes. I think quality manager, you know, you have like elite managers, Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, upcoming managers who are like starting to make their way into that bracket, potentially managers like, you know, Arteta, etc, but still need to win major honors to be considered there. And Managers like Thomas, sure who are, you know, after like, I would say hit his thing. I see like you have like the big two or three, which is,
00:14:36
AFC Bournemouth
Guardiola, Klopp, probably Enchilotti and then you have like the next tier and two shoes in that next tier and then you have managers like Arteta which are breaking into like these top managers and elite Managers, that's just my personal perspective, right? And so I think given who was available don't need to pay compensation to any club. I believe although some sectors especially in the Twitter-first or X-verse, now it's called Cloud for Film, it's called X. I think I've seen something to do with Buy A Minute, which was his last one. Anyway, I might just make that up, so don't quote me on that. I'm digressing a bit, but you know but ten ten technically like a free agent, I guess, because it wasn't actively with any any club.
00:15:23
AFC Bournemouth
So, you know, in the best manager, I think that they the FA could have got with his CV and winning winning mentality, to be honest, and the way that he plays football, press, you know, kind of like... i So he also adapts, you know, I think... quite a bit to the opposition as well, as soon as sometimes, or especially at Chelsea, played a lot with the back three. Probably won't do that with England. That's just my gut feel. So yeah, we'll demand a lot of the England players. And I think, overall, a good appointment. I didn't really understand the rage around England manager should manage England national team.
00:16:10
AFC Bournemouth
And also the rage around like him not starting earlier, like him not taking the shit away. Like if the agreement with Lee Carnegie was you take charge of all of the nation's league games and I think you honor that. So overall, you know, I'm fairly pleased with you.
00:16:29
AFC Bournemouth
the situation.
