Introduction to Clued In Bonus Episode

00:00:12
Speaker
Welcome to a Clued In bonus episode. I'm Sarah. And I'm Brooke, and we both love mystery. Hi, Brooke. Hi, Sarah. Are you as excited as I am for another Watch Along?
00:00:27
Speaker
I think so.

Brooke's Excitement for Adaptation

00:00:29
Speaker
I'm excited because this is a book where it's based on a book that I've read. And so it'll be really interesting to see how it's been adapted. Exactly. So that wasn't the case for our first watch-along, but this one, we are going to be watching A Good Girl's Guide to Murder.
00:00:49
Speaker
So the book was written by Holly Jackson and it was published in 2019 and it's the first of a trilogy. There's three books in the series as well as a novella. I enjoyed this book and I think it was very popular on you know among
00:01:08
Speaker
readers on Instagram and social media, which is I think where I originally saw it. It is YA, so, you know, a younger sleuth, and I'm looking forward to watching this.

Sarah's Unique Perspective

00:01:21
Speaker
Right. And kind of the twist on this is I haven't read the book and I fully intended to, but you know, the summer got busy and it didn't happen. And so at first we thought that was maybe kind of an issue, but then we thought, you know, it adds an interesting layer as we watch it and you know, the basic storyline, at least as the book is told. And I don't, I think it's going to be fun to kind of see
00:01:47
Speaker
you know, what our expectations are and the way we like to conjecture about the storyline. I think it's going to it'll make it even more fun. Exactly.

Adaptation Format and Accessibility

00:01:56
Speaker
And the nice thing about this is it's only six episodes, the Netflix version. So, you know, people can watch it with us, but it's not, you know, a 10 episode series arc that they're signing up for. Exactly. And as I understand it, just a little bit I've read about the book, some
00:02:17
Speaker
of the story is told in an unusual format, is that right? Well, so the book includes some podcast episodes or snippets of audio conversations because the premise is that this
00:02:32
Speaker
student who I think she's in her final year of high school and they have like a capstone project that they need to do and she chooses to investigate the disappearance of a girl from the same town as her five years earlier and you know so she speaks to some of the people who would have known her and
00:02:55
Speaker
Yeah, so there's a little bit of an unusual format. And so maybe we'll see that in the show. Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing how the two translate from whatever was portrayed in the written book to the film. And I will say that I really enjoy, I can't say if the actress portrays the main character in the book,
00:03:21
Speaker
well because I haven't read it but I do like this actress a lot. This is Emma Myers and people who watched Wednesday will remember her as the very blonde and bubbly roommate to Wednesday and it seems like she's in a very different character this time so that'll be fun.
00:03:39
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, that'll be really interesting to see.

Book Versions and Settings

00:03:42
Speaker
And the other thing that I think is worth mentioning is that when the book was published, there was a UK version and there was an American version. And so all the character names remained the same and the premise of the books remained the same, but the setting was completely different.
00:03:59
Speaker
So, in the American version, I think it's in Connecticut, and in the UK version, it's a small town somewhere in the UK, and I can't remember the name of the town, but I believe that this is set in the UK, the screen adaptation.
00:04:21
Speaker
Isn't that interesting? I can't think of another book. Certainly we know that we have different versions. We'd get different covers, the publishers in the UK versus the US. I do think sometimes I've noticed different names for whatever reason. Sometimes a character's name will be slightly different.
00:04:39
Speaker
But usually the setting is the same, right? If it's set in the UK, then even the US version of the book is set in that UK location. So really interesting that that happened. That's a whole different topic of conversation, but it'll be fun to see where the Netflix production lands.
00:04:59
Speaker
Well, and I think Holly Jackson is from the UK, so I'm fairly certain that this one is set in the UK, but I read an article where she talked about that that was a publisher decision and she had to rework the book to make it in the publisher's opinion more palatable for an American audience, which
00:05:21
Speaker
I think that may be discounting the intelligence of American readers, quite honestly, that they couldn't follow a book that was set outside the US. Yeah, I would agree. And especially discounting a group of YA readers, because maybe if that played into the decision, because it is meant for slightly younger readers. But again, I don't think that that's a great decision personally. Yeah.
00:05:47
Speaker
Anyway, um, as far as I know, there's just this one screen adaptation.

Anticipation for UK Adaptation

00:05:52
Speaker
Um, and it's the, like I said, I'm, I'm fairly certain it's set in the UK. So that I'm, I'm just really looking forward to watching it. I am too. I can't wait. And, um, as you all remember, we do not watch ahead. So the next time you hear from us, we'll have watched episode one and we will discuss episode one and we won't watch episode two until that's complete. And then so on.
00:06:18
Speaker
Yeah, and we're aiming to release these a week apart. So if you're watching with us, you don't have to wait too long between watching the episodes if you watch them on the same cadence as us. And you don't hopefully have to wait too long to hear our thoughts as we watch.
00:06:36
Speaker
Exactly. And it's not too late to join the cartel to be part of this, although we are planning to give just some little gifts of this episode and episode one to anyone who's interested in listening. So you'll get a feel for the way these shows go. But if you'd like to join us on the cartel, remember that we have a great format of the way that the pricing structure is laid out so that you basically get to choose your discount and pay what you're able to in order to participate in all of our fun activities.

Viewing and Discussion Plans

00:07:09
Speaker
I think all that's left for us to do is watch the first episode, Brooke, and come back and talk again in about a week. That sounds great. Let's fire up our TVs. And thank you everyone for listening today to Clued in Mystery. I'm Brooke. And I'm Sarah. And we both love mystery.
