Introduction to the Podcast

00:00:08
afcbournement
Hi everyone, welcome back to your daily AFC BOMF podcast with me, Luke, and my sidekick Dom. Dom, are you there? How are you doing, my friends?
00:00:18
Dom Thorn
I'm here. I'm ready to talk international as opposed to club, which is bizarre.

Focus of the Episode: International Break

00:00:25
afcbournement
Yeah, it is. Because it is international break, that's home already. It just feels like we just had the euros and now it's like international break already.
00:00:33
Dom Thorn
Yeah.
00:00:34
afcbournement
so So that is the focus for today's episode because, you know, this weekend, there is no Bournemouth or Bournemouth is not in action. So I wanted to start this episode, Dom, by actually asking you, like, how do you feel about international break?
00:00:48
afcbournement
Are you like me and prefer So I'm kind of a little bit weird in the sense like I prefer club football, although I get more anxious and kind of not anxious.

Club vs. International Football: Emotional Impact

00:00:59
afcbournement
Yeah, kind of like club football means more to me than in international or football, right? So like when I'm watching international football, I guess I can relax a little bit more and maybe just like enjoy the yeah watching the game whereas when I watch club football boys it's like a little bit more because it means more you know it's a little bit more anxiety provoking I guess especially when it's not going well so are you the same are you different how do you find it in social break
00:01:28
Dom Thorn
international breaks i'm very much the same as you i don't really pay much attention to it it's i think the thing is with england anyway there's this sort of expectation isn't there that you're just going to win most of the games like even with World Cup qualifiers, European qualifiers, your you're basically expecting England to be at the major tournaments and the Nations League obviously introduced that to try and make these glorified friendlies a little bit more entertaining but it doesn't really work for me. Whereas also on the flip side when you've got those major tournaments on I am very much
00:02:05
Dom Thorn
big time. I'm in it. I'm involved.
00:02:07
afcbournement
Mm.
00:02:08
Dom Thorn
I was very upset after the Spain game, as I imagine you and everyone else listening was, unless you're Spanish, obviously. And yeah, you don't really have the same emotional connection, do you?
00:02:21
Dom Thorn
Unless it's a major tournament.
00:02:24
afcbournement
yeah I mean so that's where I'm kind of a a little bit weird so like obviously in the major tournament I want England to do well you know because I'm English and stuff but like for me I still I still don't have that as much emotional connection as I would do like with my club you know like if my club was in a final compared to England in the final I would get a lot more
00:02:30
Dom Thorn
Yeah.
00:02:46
afcbournement
nervous before the game, you know, instead for my club team than I would for for England. So I'm kind of maybe a bit weird like that. but like be Obviously, I like I want England to do well. I wanted them to to win the the last euros and obviously the Euros before that and and stuff. But but yeah, you know I just don't have that same emotional connection compared to club football. maybe maybe Maybe that's because club football is like every week and and stuff. like I'm not sure.
00:03:21
Dom Thorn
Yeah, it's weird because, I mean, obviously, Bournemouth don't ever get to finals, so I don't really know what experiencing a club final would be like. Whereas, obviously, before 2021, you'd never really known what a Ninsashal final would be like either.
00:03:42
Dom Thorn
And then you get to that point and you realise just how awful they are. Like I hate them because you watch, you watch a club final as a neutral, for instance, you watch the Champions League final that's just been gone, the Dortmund, Real Madrid game.
00:03:56
Dom Thorn
And I was so bored. Like I find finals so boring. But then because obviously both teams, neither of them want to lose, do they? So then
00:04:05
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:04:06
Dom Thorn
I can just imagine how awful that must be is as a club fan watching that. I think I'll either cry, pull all my hair out or do both at the same time.
00:04:18
afcbournement
Do you watch, so obviously with this international break as you said there, the the nation leagues, do you still watch England or or watch any international football during an international break or or are you more like my brother that for some reason only watches club you know club football and when it comes to these international break is like not interested in it and I'm like well there's all football so surely some football's better than no football but he's not having any he's not having any of it.
00:04:22
Dom Thorn
Yeah.
00:04:44
Dom Thorn
I used to watch it more when I was younger. i I do watch it now, but I don't sit down and put all of my attention to it. Like, again, if we're going back to the Euros, I'll sit down, I'll watch it, watch it, and I'll watch all of the games.
00:04:53
afcbournement
Hmm.
00:05:00
Dom Thorn
My girlfriend hates me for it because one game will finish and another one will be on, and then another one will be on, and it's like that basically every day for a month.
00:05:06
afcbournement
It's heaven.
00:05:07
Dom Thorn
Whereas with the... Yeah.
00:05:08
afcbournement
It's heaven.
00:05:09
Dom Thorn
heaven for us but maybe not heaven for people who don't really like football

England's Upcoming International Games

00:05:13
afcbournement
Of course.
00:05:13
Dom Thorn
and then when of like these upcoming England games yeah I'll watch them but I won't really care like I don't know if that's blasphemous or sacrilegious to say but
00:05:29
Dom Thorn
I just want to get it back. I've just seen my club team win their first game of the season. We've got momentum. and Then you just lose it for two weeks. So yeah, I see it as more of a hindrance to the international break personally.
00:05:41
afcbournement
Yeah, we'll we'll come on to more of the England games in kind of a different segment. But yeah I just kind of want to relate the into international break before we yeah we actually go to a break to Bournemouth. I have to have to be honest, like coming into this episode, I wasn't too aware of if any of Bournemouth players have been called up for international duty. Can you give insights on that? And yeah, thoughts on that?
00:06:08
Dom Thorn
Yeah, so literally today, Clive got called up to replace, oh, I'm not sure who replaced, Vierman, I think. So he's been called up to the the Dutch squad in terms of others. to be honest with you, I'm not actually entirely sure either. I think I'm just so withdrawn from international football. So yeah I'm going to sound like a really bad fan here, but I'm not entirely sure off the top of my head. I think, obviously, Zabrada would be called up if for Ukraine's games. Kirk, as I would imagine, has been called up for Hungary, Christie for Scotland, etc et cetera, et cetera. But to be perfectly honest with you, Luke, I'm not actually entirely sure.
00:06:51
afcbournement
OK, no, no, no problem.
00:06:52
Dom Thorn
So, poor show for me. I'll do my research.
00:06:55
afcbournement
No problem. Yeah, I was just just curious, but yeah it's interesting that obviously Clovis has been called up to the to the Dutch team. Do you get as a fan nervous when like for your players, because obviously you don't want players to come back injured?
00:07:10
afcbournement
Is that something this is on your mind or because obviously we can't control that. You know don't necessarily think about that.
00:07:17
Dom Thorn
Yeah, it's it's weird because it's something that you never really had to worry about before.

Impact of Injuries on AFC Bournemouth

00:07:21
Dom Thorn
So like let's just rewind like just over a decade ago.
00:07:23
afcbournement
Oh yeah, of course, yeah.
00:07:25
Dom Thorn
like The only international player we had at one point, I could be wrong, but the only international player we had was Oh my God, Ben G. Bachelle, the goalkeeper. He played for Lichtenstein and he's Lichtenstein's number one. So like he would go away, but he never started for warmer. So if we got injured, it wouldn't really make much of a difference. Obviously it'd be a shame for him if we got injured. Whereas now, yeah, you've got like really important players going.
00:07:50
Dom Thorn
If Christie got injured, we'd be in the right mess. If Sabrina got injured, we'd be in a mess. If Kirk has got injured, there's a little bit more cover, but that'd be a mess as well. So yeah, it's it's strange. and With the Africa Cup of Nations as well, we lost Semenyo. The season's just gone. so it's It's a weird dynamic to wrap your head around, whereas you look at, I don't know, like a Man City fan. It's always made very big stories are made of it, isn't it? Where man some Man City players play upwards of 60 games a season because they play in all the competitions, then they play in all the international games as well. So we have it slightly bad and I slightly worry, but I empathise even a bit more with the fans of a bigger team for a change.
00:08:38
afcbournement
Interesting, yeah.

Nations League Games: Ireland and Finland

00:08:40
afcbournement
I think it's like, I think for clubs who maybe they've got like a history or something of like their players going away and getting injured, maybe like they're always nervous like when international break comes around.
00:08:50
Dom Thorn
Yeah.
00:08:53
afcbournement
But yeah, and getting interesting one. Let's take a quick break and then we'll come back. We'll touch on actually the England games more, we'll kind of focus focus in on them.
00:09:02
afcbournement
seen as soon as it is international break and I will try and sort my tongue out so I can talk properly.
00:09:19
afcbournement

00:10:14
afcbournement
so Don, maybe a little bit of a short episode today for our listeners of seeing at his international break, but I do want to forecast ahead to the England games. Obviously, as we've been speaking about there, we might have them on in the background, but because they are glorified friendly, your words, not mine, then we may not pay as much interest in them, but there is the game on Saturday against
00:10:31
Dom Thorn
Yeah.
00:10:38
afcbournement
Ireland and then I think leave it's the following Tuesday against Finland obviously both games you would think England would win but obviously we're going into these these games with England with no Garif Safquet with Lee cards Lee in charge in an interim role.
00:11:00
afcbournement
He's called up some players and that maybe not everyone was expecting. Jack Grealish, I believe, is back in the squad as well.
00:11:00
Dom Thorn
yeah
00:11:08
Dom Thorn
Yep.
00:11:08
afcbournement
What do you make of kind of the England situation going into these nation league games? and If you have any ins or have any thoughts on the actual nation league games, we'd love to hear those, but obviously I'm kind of expecting you are expecting them england to win. And so maybe not much to share. So maybe it's more about i'm obviously going and into this break with Lee Kansley in charge.
00:11:33
Dom Thorn
It'd be interesting to see the style of play. I know that he's touted more of an attacking manager as opposed to Southgate's typical conservativeness.
00:11:44
Dom Thorn
I think when you look at some of the call-ups he's given, so I know that Tilo Livrimento has been called up. Angel Gomez, obviously, he plays in France now, wasn't expecting that at all.
00:11:55
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:11:59
Dom Thorn
I think there's a lot of discussion, isn't there, why Wharton?
00:11:59
afcbournement
It keeps white as well.
00:12:03
Dom Thorn
Yeah, and you're looking at the midfield and you're thinking, well, where's Adam Wharton? Because obviously he was hugely, hugely ready at the end of last season.
00:12:08
afcbournement
Hmm.
00:12:13
Dom Thorn
And then you've got to think, well, Is there a reason? Does the manager maybe not rate him as much as the other two players? I mean, I don't really care much for Nottingham Forest as a club, no offence, but to any Forest fans listening, obviously, but Morgan gives why he is a good player. I think he deserves to be called up, especially for the sorts of games where maybe the stakes aren't as high as they would be in an international tournament. I like the fact Madwicky's been called up because he's had a really good start to the season.
00:12:44
Dom Thorn
Obviously scoring the hat-trick against Wolves a couple of weeks ago. You've got Esa still in the squad, he's having a good season, unlucky to not have. Another goal, because obviously see his goal was also controversially ruled out because of VAR. Well, VAR not being able to intervene because of a referee mistake. And then, yeah, you alluded to Jack Grealish as well, being back in the squad. I think, OK, Grealish maybe isn't playing the best football in his life, but he's probably one of those players who's probably quite important to have around. like He clearly knows all of the players, his experience. He's played quite a few times for England now. You can you can pop him with a goal here or there. but
00:13:24
Dom Thorn
Yeah, I see it more as like in an exhibition in a way, more of a chance to play players who wouldn't regularly play. It reminds me quite a bit of when Lewis Cook got called up for England, when he had his one and only appearance, obviously Salanke when he played for England that one time as well, hopefully he played for them again. And yeah, the squad's fine. It's nothing remarkable. It's nothing unremarkable, but It'll be interesting, won't it, to see our cars and set some up.
00:13:56
afcbournement
It will, it will, it will. i kind of I kind of got a feeling like he's called some players are that he kind of knows from the end of 21s. Do you get that vibe as well?
00:14:05
Dom Thorn
Yeah, I think that's always quite a smart thing to have alongside having a manager in that position, playing with players that he knows and playing with players that he's worked with before. I think sometimes there can be a bit of an over-reliance in it if you look at 10 Hargett made a night, for instance, where he just buys every single IX player who's ever lived and then just like expects them to perform in the same way that they have done before.
00:14:25
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:14:30
Dom Thorn
But I think in international football, it is good because you have that consistency, don't you? Especially in the under 21s, because very rarely does another 21s manager get sacked. Very rarely does another 21s manager really leave the club in maybe unfortunate circumstances.
00:14:44
Dom Thorn
I mean, Southgate was obviously the under 21 manager before, wasn't he? so Yeah, I think it's it's smart to have players that you've worked with. So there's excitement to be had in that regard. But yeah, it's just, again, I just find it really difficult to get motivated for an ancestral break.
00:15:05
afcbournement
What do you make of it it, we alluded to it there, the Gomez caller. I don't, I haven't seen a lot of French football. So I'm not sure like how we started the season, although if I was to do a Vic and just go off the stats, I think I don't think he scored. I think he said like two games, two free games, but have hasn't scored or anything. But interest interesting choice there, you know, what do you do you have any thoughts on that or not really could just kind of waiting to see how he does in in in the spotlight?
00:15:42
Dom Thorn
Well, obviously he's been in France for a while now, hasn't he? So he he must be playing well if he's consistently in and around the Lille set up. And I know that some of my friends who watched a bit more international football than me have said that he's been injured for quite a while and he's just coming back from fitness. But I think one of the main reasons why he's called him up is exactly what you said before. He's paid he's paid for the other 21s. He's played regularly for them. He's obviously a good play. He's got a good pedigree. I mean,
00:16:12
Dom Thorn
He was also playing that main night before, so there's obviously a player there and I think it is good to give the international players more of a chance. Obviously, one of the main criticisms that Southgate got was not included to war in the squad, when which is completely valid in my opinion. He's a good centre-back when he's played for England before. He's been okay, but he obviously he starts regularly for Racing Milan, same as Tamri Abraham. Obviously, he bangs goals in, or maybe not bangs goals, but he's a consistent goal scorer in Italy. so Yeah, I think, and also I think as well, it's that entertainment factor for us as the fans, because you were probably the same as me, when Sancho got his first call-out for England, when he was playing in Germany, that was really exciting to watch, when Bellingham was playing in Germany, he got his first first call-out for England, that was exciting to watch as well, and it's this curiosity,

New Player Call-Ups: Excitement and Impact

00:16:59
Dom Thorn
isn't it? So, yeah, we'll just have to see what happens. i I don't know if he's done anything remarkable, per se, but I'm not a little supporter, so I can't really comment, unfortunately.
00:17:10
afcbournement
Yeah, it's an interesting one to see how he will do and a few of us have been called up. Let's just take a real quick break and then we'll come back and we will end the episode by giving some forecasts on on what we think the schools might be, who who might score, shop on the school sheet as well in both games. so

Score Predictions: England vs. Ireland and Finland

00:18:14
afcbournement
OK, this is the time to do our forecast for both games. So the first game is on Saturday, Ireland versus England. What's your prediction for that game and who do you think will score?
00:18:27
Dom Thorn
should be a relatively comfortable result. I think, I think you'd be looking at maybe a two nil, three nil. obviously you're looking at the possibility of maybe Travis playing in goal, even though I doubt it. Uh, and.
00:18:42
Dom Thorn
Who will score? I mean, it's difficult to not say Harry Kane, isn't it? Because he usually scores in all of these sort of friendly games, international break style games.
00:18:53
Dom Thorn
So I'm going to say Harry Kane. And then just because we were disgusted before, maybe if he gets to start, how about an Angel Gomez goal on his debut for England if he plays against Ireland?
00:19:05
afcbournement
There we go.
00:19:05
Dom Thorn
Why not?
00:19:06
afcbournement
Caught it right there. Caught it right there. School line I'll probably say the same. A solid 2-0. Probably control the whole game. Possession, you know, in possession.
00:19:16
afcbournement
And yeah, I think I'm going to go Harry Kane double.
00:19:22
Dom Thorn
Nice.
00:19:22
afcbournement
2-0. And then it's the next game is at Wembley actually. So that's England versus Finland. Watch your predictions for this.
00:19:32
Dom Thorn
About the same. I'd say I think... Especially with your league classes as well and you're going into these two games you don't unless he really wants to be an interim manager But you might be wanting to stamp your authority on there. So I'm gonna go for another comfortable win. I'm gonna go for Another no, I'm gonna branch out a little bit. I'm gonna go for 3-0 and I'm gonna say I'm gonna go again for Harry Kane Maybe a penalty for Harry Kane actually. So Harry Kane penalty and a Cole Palmer brace
00:20:03
afcbournement
There we go. Cold Palmer, yeah. Forgot about Cold Palmer.
00:20:09
afcbournement
So I feel like I'm copying you here, but yeah, I'm going to go 3-0 as well. Hurricane Saka and...
00:20:22
afcbournement
Hmm. Let's go Eze.
00:20:25
Dom Thorn
nice Nice I'll be happy with that. I like it.
00:20:28
afcbournement
Yeah.
00:20:28
Dom Thorn
Hey good plan Yeah, me too actually No
00:20:30
afcbournement
Very good. Surprised he did it he didn't get a move in in the summer, but I guess from a from a palace perspective, obviously they let Alise go, so will they let both go? But I didn't even hear like really any any like rumours, you know, like obviously there was the big big one, Gehi to Newcastle. At least it won't happen very quickly to Bayern.
00:20:51
Dom Thorn
Yeah, there was like very, very slight rumblings about potentially Spurs.
00:20:54
afcbournement
Oh really?
00:20:56
Dom Thorn
But yeah, puff that that was very small.
00:20:56
afcbournement
I miss must have missed that.
00:20:59
Dom Thorn
But apart from that, it wasn't really anything. So you've got to wonder if maybe, like you said, people knew Palace really wouldn't be willing to let him go for anything under a certain amount of money because of the lease they go in.
00:21:12
Dom Thorn
So maybe they'll try again in the winter window maybe next year. But I can't seem to stay at Palace for long.
00:21:16
afcbournement
No.
00:21:18
Dom Thorn
No offence to Palace. I like Palace.
00:21:20
afcbournement
maybe we should bring our palace colleagues and kind of bring bring this up and kind of ask them so yeah if everything palace guys then head on over to the Daily Crystal Palace podcast they have more insights on that than when we were here but and yeah <unk> it's an interesting one but Dom thank you so much obviously a little bit different talking England and stuff I hope that you get through the international break as best as you can
00:21:45
Dom Thorn
Thank you. I appreciate i appreciate your sympathies.
00:21:48
afcbournement
Yeah. And then, yeah, we'll be back here again in no time at all, previewing the next game for Bournemouth. Dom, remind us what what the next game when we come back after the international break?

Preview: AFC Bournemouth vs. Chelsea

00:22:01
Dom Thorn
It's Chelsea at home. so and and It's an interesting one because obviously Chelsea are a bit topsy turvy at the moment with everything going on.
00:22:03
afcbournement
Oh, yeah. How could I forget that?
00:22:11
Dom Thorn
They lost their first game, then they won 6-2 and then they drew one and they drew what also. so Could be a bizarre one. i'm I'm at the moment relatively calm, but you could never be too sure with a team like that, especially with a team with 187 players.
00:22:26
Dom Thorn
So you never really know what's going to happen, do you?
00:22:27
afcbournement
You know, man, it's crazy. It's crazy, man. Totally the situation that's crazy, but we leave that potentially for another day when we look ahead and preview that game. But, Dom, thank you so much. If you've enjoyed this episode, then share it with somebody who you think would also enjoy it and find entertaining or valuable in some way. Follow us on social, GSPMbornmuth, and send us your thoughts in Central Break. Are you you like, Dom and myself, that we like in Central Break, or are you,

a fan of international break, give us your thoughts and in your school positions for England as well. And we will see you in the next episode.
