Introduction and Guest Introduction

00:00:00
Speaker
Hi I'm Mark McCaster. Welcome to Chatsunami. We're here for a very special month. It's Godzilla month. It's not Godzilla month. It's Digimon month. Welcome to Pokemon month.
00:00:23
Speaker
Hello everybody and welcome to the final episode of Pokemon Month. My name's Satsunami and joining me in the Quizzy Seat is none other than the one and only Pokemon master slash wrestler slash he'll beat me up if I don't give him the right answers. It is Martin McAllister. Martin, welcome back. Thank you, thank you. This seat is now in it as the Quizzy as the one, you know, I've listened to a few of the trivia episodes but now I've actually been the one under trivia.
00:00:50
Speaker
Very nerve-wracking. Very scary. It is, actually. You've never been on for a trivia episode, have you? I have not. This is my first time under the... Sportlight. ...under the spotlight. Pulling behind the curtain here, but there genuinely is a light. Right above March 8th, by the way. I'm being interrogated. I don't even know this.
00:01:08
Speaker
Where were you on the 13th tour

Pokemon Trivia Begins

00:01:10
Speaker
of falls? I mean it's actually a first for two things because it's the first time that you've been on for the trivia episode and it's also the first time that this has been an in-person trivia episode because usually I get to hide the answers I'm like oh what are you gonna say is it gonna be true?
00:01:27
Speaker
But yeah, this time genuinely, I can't hide it. I have to be stoney faced and be like, did Pikachu jump off a cliff? True or false? Answer the question! I want to say true in one episode somewhere. Probably.
00:01:40
Speaker
I'm not afraid to take me with you. I'm my head can on this side. For those of you who aren't familiar, maybe just need to refresh, the trivia episode is the last episode of the month that we do where I ask the Quizzy, as it were, Martin McAllston in this episode, I ask them 10 questions and I want a true or false answer. So if you want to play along at home, get your, excuse me, get your pen and pad out
00:02:09
Speaker
I'll put it down on my phone, but if you want to go old school, feel free to do that and then send a picture to us at Chance and Ami Pod on Twitter. As always, please feel free to play along at home. But before we go enter, before I ask you the 10 questions that will define your status as a Pokémon nerd,
00:02:27
Speaker
It depends if Pokemon Month was a failure or a success. How confident are you in your knowledge of Pokemon? Would you say you're a Pokemon aficionado or would you say you're a cheater and on the edge? So one of my friends once told me that if you read a book, you become an expert in that subject more than 99% of the population, right? So I think I am 99%, I think I'm in that 1% of the population in terms of Pokemon knowledge. I don't know what level you've done these questions to. So I would say I'm quite good at Pokemon, but
00:02:56
Speaker
I'm worried that you're going to be like, what's the PP of Tail Whip? I'm curious about what's the level of questions we're going to get here. And then also for the double thing, my knowledge of Gen 1, 2 and 3 are much better than my knowledge of Gen onwards. If it helps, there is a bit of a mix here.

Martin's Struggles and Discussions

00:03:15
Speaker
We have got stuff to do with the anime, we've got stuff to do with the games, stuff to do with the characters, a couple of truths, a couple of cheeky falses. You just read a Bulbopedia article down here.
00:03:26
Speaker
That's the thing, I feel like I know more about Pokémon than most people, but I feel that you know more about Pokémon than most people. And yet, would you be surprised there's people who know even more than me? Which is horrifying, because the last time I had to exert this amount of knowledge was when Adam and I did the living in the Pokémon world, and I had to talk about an Odish getting milked, so you know what?
00:03:49
Speaker
It was a great episode but at the same time, having to explain to your partner why you're talking about Moo Moo Milk. And this is a slight behind the scenes again, but even my partner is just talking about that. She'll say, oh how's Moo Moo Milk? And I go, Moo Moo Milk?
00:04:05
Speaker
And I'm pretty sure before we did the Call of Duty retrospective episode we did last year, I want to say. Before that, loving that the Pokémon model was the last episode we did together. So the movie milk was a little rancid, okay? So on that note, while we just dive into it, I wish I had some theme music. I should probably have the theme music for these episodes, yeah? I can't phone a friend. I've got a Pikachu behind me who's going to cough for every two or fours.
00:04:34
Speaker
you joke but there is a Pikachu behind him. Ready for the first question? Let's do it. Question 1. In the Japanese dub of Pokemon, the first movie, there is a deleted opening where we see a young Mewtwo interact with a young girl called Amber and three clone starters who subsequently die right in front of him. The opening was removed from the English dub for being too dark. Is that true or is it false? The thing that's thrown me off is that it sounds like the start of the Inte movie.
00:05:04
Speaker
I'm gonna go false. Trying to answer. Yep. Giving a wee moment of pause for the people at home. False is the answer, the answer's locked in. Yep. It's true. What? So this is something I wanted to bring up in the last episode. But I couldn't because I was like, shoot, I forgot I made this the first question. That's funny. This is true. Wow. There is an animated five minutes, I want to say. So that was gonna be my question. This is actually like an animated actor.
00:05:31
Speaker
fully animated, a full thing, where it's the moon-faced scientist who's trying to bring back his daughter Amber. And I kid you not, genuinely, for anyone out there who doesn't believe me, look us up on YouTube, or just in general, but he's trying to bring back his daughter and he clones these starter Pokémon and they've all got the patterns, you know, like in the film. And each one, granted, it's not as traumatic as I'm going, oh my heart!
00:05:58
Speaker
you know it's more they turn to fairy dust or whatever you know and a young mutu it's heartbreaking because it's this like tiny mutu no don't go and this wee girl's like oh it feels so good it's the mutu and she just and i'm pretty sure i could be misremembering this but i'm pretty sure there's a scene with the scientist's wife like no yeah like with the whiskey bottle and everything i'm sure there is it's just you can see why four kids said yeah this is a bit too so that doesn't really add in this oh it doesn't add more trauma
00:06:30
Speaker
So, question 2, are you ready for this? In an interview with the character's voice actors, held with Keyzone magazine in July 2006, it was revealed that Ash Ketchum's

Comedic Moments and Surprises

00:06:42
Speaker
companion Misty and Brock have surnames. Brock is known as Brock Harrison and Misty is known as Misty Williams.
00:06:49
Speaker
I think that's false and I think the reason I think that's false is it not in the anime like Cerulean City the sisters get a certain name or is she adopted now? I can't remember. I'm gonna say false. This is one hell of a way for Misty to find out she's adult. I'm sorry Misty. Final answer. Yeah. Lock it in. Lock it in. It is true apparently. I don't think this is their canon names because I saw a lot of form posts from 2004.
00:07:19
Speaker
I don't know if this is Canon, but apparently the voice actors in that interview revealed that his name's Brock Harrison and she's Misty Williams, which seems like a very... I know Misty and Brock are the English names, so they have to have English-sounding names, you know? They couldn't have the Japanese-sounding names, but yeah, it's a bit weird.
00:07:41
Speaker
This is worse than finding out the other week that Kratos has a first name and it's John Kratos. Right, are you ready for number three? I'm zeroing to. Well, I'm getting this one right. You can pull it back. Number three, to promote the second Pokemon movie, there were talks of having an event in America.
00:07:58
Speaker
where participating zoos would apply animal friendly paint onto animals as part of a treasure hunt to find them all. However, this was promptly cancelled after objections were raised by animal rights groups.
00:08:22
Speaker
It is false. Zero and three. Yeah, I have to admit I'm proud of that one because I do think, see if that has genuinely happened, I will retract that. I'm going to say, maybe not for Pokémon, but I definitely feel like someone has tried to paint, like, or done something to an animal in a zoo. Surely, surely. There's no way they haven't. I'm actually surprised there hasn't been that. Yeah, I'm thinking a bit like Absolutely Sea World would have done this.
00:08:49
Speaker
Because I have to say, initially, I was going to say, oh, they dressed them up as Pokemon. But then I thought, oh, that's too far. Question four. You feeling confident going forward? No. Question four. We all know that Pokemon has been banned in certain countries at one point or another. But did you know that Sweden once banned the anime from airing due to their strict marketing laws on advertising to children?
00:09:13
Speaker
it does sound Swedish to do that because they do like to have different laws and then obviously you got the games change things based on gambling laws but then they wouldn't get moments in other sort of shows. I'm gonna say false. Final answer for that one. I don't like how long he has. Final answer.
00:09:29
Speaker
locking that in. It is true apparently. I was only banned for a brief period. I think it was because of you know the whole catch them all and no one would catch them before you know they run away from your mum's bank account. Yeah it was an addictive call to action. So there was something to do with like you're not allowed to advertise to kids without being very explicit which I think is an incredible law. Well done Sweden on that front but yeah turns out it was banned briefly.
00:09:56
Speaker
that's the distinction I was missing was why would it be banned, that's clever. Yeah I think for obvious reasons there's other countries like Saudi Arabia and things that would ban it but for Sweden that was really surprising to me. So yeah we're halfway through, we are at number five. Halfway through, no correct answers so far. Another loss for Martin McAllister.
00:10:18
Speaker
No! If we get it back, we're getting a B-ball. I'll see if we can go. Okay. I

Discussion on Trivia Difficulty and Twists

00:10:22
Speaker
mean, you can still get five. So, in Generation 4, there were talks of introducing a ghost-type evolution alongside the grass and ice iterations. However, it was scrapped as Game Freak thought that the concept of a dead Eevee would upset children. So this was during Generation 4 when they introduced Galician and Leafeon, and they were thinking of introducing a ghost-type alongside that.
00:10:47
Speaker
I'm going to go... See, the reasoning's really good, but then I don't know if they're going to just free at once, but then Generation 4 was like a bit of a reboot and they didn't want to repeat a lot of the same notes. I'm going to go true on this one. Are you sure? I'm sorry. Really? Really? Yeah, why not? I'm not changing answers. Walking that in? Yeah. It is unfortunately false.
00:11:09
Speaker
You did the Dungeons and Dragons DM, are you sure? Come on! Yeah, unfortunately, as far as I know, there's no ghost type. I guess it's still not a ghost type. Yeah, there's the images though. I don't want to get too morbid on that Pokémon trivia, but you know, the dead Eevee. That's like, oh look, he's a ghost type. But yeah, as far as I know, there's no plans. I think the last evolution was actually a fairy type.
00:11:34
Speaker
Yeah, it was Sylveon in Gen 6, but never had one since, I know. They're already on Gen 9, so three generations behind. I think they'll put into just light and sound types and bring them in for that. Question 6, are we ready? No. Sound types and light types.
00:11:49
Speaker
Here we go. Question 6. During Pokemon's popularity in the 2000s, there were a number of events to promote the franchise. One such event in a local London game shop led to the police being called after some passers-by mistook some employees for gang members. The reason? They were dressed as Team Rocket members. Sure, true. Why not? No, I don't do this to me. Final answer? Yeah. 100%. Uh-huh. Phone the friend? No. Call the audience? No.
00:12:19
Speaker
I'd love to know the people at home how they're doing, because I'd like to call one of them right now. I was going to say, we've got a mutual friend here. Unfortunately, it is false. As far as I know, there's no gang activity. This is unfortunately a falsity. These are hard. I'm sorry. Surely you must have got one but not one. It's the real world stuff about them, very bad at it.
00:12:44
Speaker
Well, then again, I suppose if I could fool Adam into thinking that they were going to shoot Amy the Hedgehog in the face. Oh, I also believe that to be fair. OK, question seven. And for anyone listening at home, please feel free to post your, well, your answer so far or your score so far over on Twitter. Play along under the episode. Don't tag me, though. Yeah, don't tag Martin McAllister. I don't need you when he was this.
00:13:11
Speaker
I think you might know this one to be fair. In Pokemon Red and Blue, if you evolve your starter before you deliver Oak's parcel, Oak will refuse to give you a Pokedex thus soft locking the game.
00:13:25
Speaker
I think this one is true, but there's a lot of things... What's confusing me is there's a lot of things that do snag the Pokedex. One of the other famous ones is like, you can take the item out of the PC and do something funny as well. But let's say true. So why do you think it's true? I think the evolution... I think the evolution mucks up the game because you don't have two Pokedex. You've got a Pokedex entry, so he thinks you've got the Pokedex already, so it changes the dialogue. There is a check in the game that checks whether he should give you the dialogue of the Pokedex and it's not actually checking if you have the Pokedex.
00:13:56
Speaker
I can't remember what the trigger is. Final answer? Yep. 100%. Yeah. You're definitely sure? Go for it. What do you guys think at home?
00:14:03
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,

Cultural Trivia and Pokemon Influence

00:14:11
Speaker
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
00:14:32
Speaker
Funny enough, I don't know if this is 100% true either, but people said it was obviously the case for the Japanese versions Pokemon Blue and Green, but I've heard people say it was patched out for Blue and Red, like the Western versions, not 100%.
00:14:47
Speaker
But what I found interesting was people were saying that it was potentially left in for Pokémon Yellow. And the interesting thing about that is you physically cannot get another Pokémon because you can't evolve Pikachu and you can't catch anything in between. So there's no difference if they do have it or not. It's really fascinating. That's cool. Pokémon Yellow's a weird hodgepodge of stuff. Look at that. That's cool. Next week's episode. Pokémon leap month. So you ready for the next one? Number 8. Riding high.
00:15:16
Speaker
The move Night Slash is based on the samurai practice known as Crossroads Killings, where a samurai would test out their new katana by hiding in the bushes and then cut down random passers by. That's true. That's true. Why are you thinking true? I've heard it before. That wasn't a surprising sentence.
00:15:36
Speaker
But then I don't know what relation it's got to Night Slash. This is what it's going to be throwing me off. I wonder if you're going to say it's a different move, but let's go through. Been a long time. Yeah. Walking in. Let's lock it in. It is true. Two in a row. I have to say, I have never heard a crossroad kill one. No. Because whenever you hear, and maybe this is just me hanging around with too many weebs, but whenever you hear about Samurai, you hear about the Bushido code and this and that, you're all honourable, this and that. No, they were horrible people.
00:16:01
Speaker
Yeah, oh, I never realised they just went, oh, I've got a new katana, I'm about to test it like a child and Chris has. So, yeah, that was very eye-opening, I have to say. Yeah, I watched a Netflix documentary about Samurai all back and it turns out, yeah, they're not nice people. No, absolutely not. The whole Samurai thing that you learn from my videos, the anime. Not great.
00:16:20
Speaker
Not true. It reminds me of when I was studying, and this is from my brother in the past, I was studying Shintoism, like, you know, the Japanese religion and university, and they were talking about how a lot of America tried to come in to open up trade. Honestly, I bet you didn't expect us to listen to this episode, but it's like people saying, oh, the samurai wouldn't use guns, they would, you know, use the katanas to sort out things. They are
00:16:45
Speaker
As soon as he got the hands of the gun, they went, oh, I'm using this. Yeah, of course. Unlike anime, you can not cut... I can't cut bullets. They're like, nah, no. No, nah, I should. No. Yeah, exactly. Okay, you are too far behind. Well, too far behind. Too far behind. Too far behind. A quarter. Question nine. There were talks about a potential anime collaboration between Digimon and Pokémon, but the executives at Pokémon dismissed this as they didn't believe that Digimon was popular enough at the time. Oh, so honest to be true.
00:17:15
Speaker
Well I'm not into existence. Yeah yeah my head's on folks. But my heart is on Trae. I'm doing that thing where you put a bet on a football team that you know is going to lose because you won't be disappointed either way. So I'm going to go for false but if I'm wrong I'll be pleased. I'm going to say false please. And the answer? Yes. Welcome then. Yep. The answer is... false. Awww I kind of wanted it to be Trae.
00:17:36
Speaker
I have to admit, as far as I know, there's not been a collaboration, which is weird because you would expect some kind of... You know how Shonen Jump, although granted it's under the same umbrella company, but they've got crossovers between One Piece, Dragon Ball Z and Bleach. Do they have Bleach? No. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, maybe. But I haven't played the Shonen Jump game in oil. Ah, true. Jump Force. And Naruto, probably. Yeah, Naruto is definitely in it. He's trying to think of Jump Force now.
00:18:01
Speaker
But yeah, they can buy all of those until some anime's a thing. So, I'm surprised. There's no game. There would be a game, but more anime. Some cross over. Like the Godzilla DC comic is out just now. There's a DC comic? Yeah, it's Justice League vs Godzilla. Is Godzilla one? I hope so. That's my boy.
00:18:17
Speaker
So, question 10, the final question. So, so far you've got the last three connects, you've got the soft lock in the Pokedex, that's definitely true. You've got the Knight Slash one, definitely true. And you've got the Digimon one which is false. Question 10, the final one.
00:18:34
Speaker
That's not me coughing for the answer by the way. In an attempt to parody Pokemon, the Yu-Gi-Oh anime writers created a character called Ember Collectum who would be a fanatical card collector and minor antagonist to

Conclusion and Audience Engagement

00:18:52
Speaker
the main heroes. The idea was dropped however when Konami worried about being sued. Oh that's a fun one because Yu-Gi-Oh is petty.
00:19:00
Speaker
and it also not beyond doing something like that something like that and they've got games that are effectively they do different genres of games so i could see where they maybe want to do and i would say dungeon dice monsters let's go true i'm gonna say true and i want to say i'm gonna double down on true and say it's the character that was his name juke became not juke dungeons and dice monsters i'm gonna say it's the same guy
00:19:23
Speaker
Let's go true. True for Ember. Ember Collectum. Ember Collectum. I'm sorry it's false. As soon as you forgot the name that you came up with. Yeah, unfortunately it is false but I had a lot of fun. Unfortunately they did not have a character called Ember Collectum. But I kinda wish they did.
00:19:42
Speaker
I know that, that's fun. Because there has been various like Yu-Gi-Oh, they've been testing the waters of doing a Pokemon game. Yeah, because I know they had capsulemon. They also had a thing called, is it Falsebound Kingdom? Which is like a PS1 strategy game. It's effectively Pokemon, but it's like 6v6. So it's something like a Pokemon in the final fantasy game. So they've obviously wanted to do a Monsters Beyond the Cards thing. So that's what got me, that got me. So do you want to review the questions?
00:20:08
Speaker
I don't, but for the people at home. Oh yes, with a lot of the listeners at home. So question one, we talked about the Japanese dub having the very morbid opening. That is true. Question two, for Ash Ketchum's companions Misty and Brock having two names, Brock Harrison and Misty Williams. That is true for number three, about paintings
00:20:30
Speaker
Zoo Animals. You should never paint Zoo Animals. That is false. Number four, Sweden banning Pokemon. That was true for a brief period of time, they did. And then they brought it back. Number five, Gen 5, about the ghost type evolution. I'm not gonna lie, I thought you were gonna ask me what the name of the ghost was. And I was really like, um, ghosty on ghosty.
00:20:51
Speaker
That is indeed false. Number six, about the London Game Shop. Getting arrested for addressing this Team Rocket. That is false. Number seven, for Pokemon Red and Blue. Soft walking it after evolving your starter. That is true. Number eight, about Night Slash being based on the Samurai practice, those as Crossroad Killings. That is true. Number nine, the collaboration between Digimon and Pokemon was indeed false, as far as I know, unless there's some document that they're going to
00:21:20
Speaker
And last but certainly not least, number 10, Ember Collector. Unfortunately God rest their soul. They don't exist, but I would love to see the fanart of that.
00:21:32
Speaker
like a pseudo Pokémon Yu-Gi-Oh character, and you indeed got three of those. I'm not feeling terrible about it, you know what, your lies were very convincing. Yes, thank you. So I'm too trusting. I don't know whether to take that as a compliment. I have to admit, I feel as if I did myself, because whenever I do this with Andrew, he's very distrusting. He questions everything, he's like, no, no, no, that's false, because he had a true question before.
00:21:57
Speaker
I didn't want to play that meta game, but I think this actually nicely ties up the Pokémon one as well because what you saw there was I believed everything I heard about Pokémon and therefore you can see how Pokémon rumors could stand.
00:22:11
Speaker
Well, you're not wrong. You are not wrong there. That is very true. But as always, Martin, thank you so, so much for taking the quiz. Thank you for having me on. One question you did miss was whether Mu was under the truck, but we'll look back to that another time. I'll just reverse it and find out. I mean, cats hide under. Do you think that's probably why? Because cats hide under trucks. Question 11.
00:22:37
Speaker
I'm putting a living in this new under the trap. Thanks for watching. And on that note, thank you all so, so much for listening to this episode, as well as Pokemon Month as a whole. So what did you get for this quiz? Did you get 10 out of 10 marks? Did you see through my cunning lies as of now? Or are you in the same camp as Martin McAllister at MMcAllister on Twitter? For the love of God, please don't tag either of us, you know. Don't tag chat tsunami pod.
00:23:06
Speaker
Don't! You can't see me winking but you can hear me winking. Don't tag emmicalus there. Don't let us know how you did in this. Certainly don't comment underneath the post for this one. Don't. Yeah, absolutely not. But as always, if you want to hear the rest of Pokemon Month as well as the other collaborations we've done together, then feel free to check us out at Chatsunami.com. I also want to thank, once again, our Pokemon Panda learning patrons.
00:23:31
Speaker
I love alliteration. Robotic Battletoaster and Sonya thank you so so much for once again supporting the show and if you want our full commentary track on the Pokemon album as well as the Digimon album, the Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, Japanese Spider-Man, it was really good to do more but honestly the ones we've done are absolutely fantastic. Feel free to check us out at patreon.com forward slash chat tsunami. But until next time, thank you all so so much for listening, stay safe, stay awesome and most importantly,
00:24:04
Speaker
I was going to say get muted if you're in team and just start this month again. Listen to them all. It's been great fun. But then you would forget the answers. Again, exactly. Ah, of course. And I can do

00:24:13
Speaker
that quiz again. I love Ann Leach.
