Hello and welcome to this week's edition of The Filter. Three really nice stories for you this week but before I go any further I just need to remind you I'm not going to give you the links to the stories in the show notes for this podcast or the video description for this video depending on how you're looking at it. The only way to get the links to the articles I'm going to talk about is to subscribe to

the filter. You can do that by going to yessio.io forward slash the filter.

Content Creation Advice

00:00:31
Speaker
Story number one, well not really a story so much as a guide. When I was first learning to write many years ago, every bit of advice I read started off by saying write from the heart, write what you know, write what you're passionate about. Incidentally the same thing goes for public speaking.
00:00:47
Speaker
And that's absolutely true. That is good advice. But if you want to rank, you also need to sketch out how your article is going to play out.

Google Updates and Content Outlines

00:00:57
Speaker
You need to create a content outline. I'm going to talk about this here, this here, this here. It's a bit like a plot in a novel, but for an article. This is particularly important since Google's been rolling out its helpful content update. I shouldn't do that because it is kind of helpful.
00:01:14
Speaker
So here's a really nice guide. There you go. Brilliant. Just read it. It's all nice and clear. You don't need to understand anything technical before you click that link. It's just a very useful thing to see.

Issues with Google Ads

00:01:25
Speaker
Next up, I don't talk about Google Ads probably enough on the filter, but as the filter is supposed to be a SWOT analysis, then I probably ought to discuss it more. Google Ads is brilliant.
00:01:37
Speaker
that's not what today's story is about today's story is about something called ad hijacking which it does happen and if you're paying any money at all for google ads you probably ought to have a look at this article it's something to be aware of these kind of
00:01:51
Speaker
Well, sketchy Google Ads issues, which Google is always trying to stamp out, they do have a nasty habit of affecting everyone, no matter how large or small your budget. So don't assume you're small enough to fly under the radar. Have a look at this article.

Google's Manual Actions

00:02:08
Speaker
Finally, I've included what may be a negative article, but there are some people in SEO who are quite amused by this. I couldn't possibly comment as to whether I'm amused by it or not. But there's some very, very big websites that Google's been giving a kick, I'm going to say kicking the cobblers. Yeah, they've been giving a kick in the cobblers. We'll stick with that.
00:02:33
Speaker
because they've been doing things that Google considers really poor user experience. And I think with some websites in the past, there's been an attitude or an assumption even from people in SEO that they're too big to fail, too big to get punished. But what Google is doing at the moment is manually going and looking at these websites and manually reducing the rankings or giving them what we call manual actions. A manual action is
00:03:01
Speaker
a little missive from Google that says we know what you did and we don't like it.

Conclusion and Call to Action

00:03:12
Speaker
I've said before when talking about manual actions that they don't just come out of the blue if you get a manual action then you probably know you've been doing something that Google isn't going to be too keen on so good article though it's just interesting that Google really has got the cricket bat of righteous justice at the moment which is
00:03:31
Speaker
slightly scary but we have to remember that Google is not the only traffic source it's just currently quite a really good one especially if you do SEO which you will do excellently if you carry on subscribing to the filter so there you go there's this week's edition thank you for listening thank you for watching please like subscribe and tell your mum bye
