What's in this episode:

  1. Brave AI Integration: Brave Browser is stepping up its game with a new AI search function. Unlike traditional search engines, Brave AI presents results in a format akin to conversational AI platforms but still provides direct links to source articles. Andrew explores how this could shift SEO dynamics.
  2. Google Chrome and Third-Party Cookies: A major update is on the horizon as Google Chrome plans to block third-party cookies. This could have significant implications for privacy, website functionality, and digital marketing strategies. Andrew discusses what this means for business owners and website operators.
  3. The End of HARO: Help A Reporter Out (HARO) has been a vital tool for journalists and SEO experts seeking authoritative backlinks through high-quality journalistic content. However, it's being phased out and replaced due to challenges including AI spam. Andrew shares his experiences and mixed feelings about this change.

Remember, to forward this episode to anyone you think should catch up on these tech and SEO insights, and maybe give your mum a ring too!

Welcome and Introduction

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello, welcome to this week's edition of The Filter. I've just popped into the office. I've been away at Biz X, which is a really great conference for a few days. But I wanted to make sure The Filter still got sent out. Now, remember, I'm not going to put the links to the articles I'm talking about in the show notes or in the video description, depending on how you're watching this.
00:00:18
Speaker
The only way to get the direct link through to these articles is to subscribe to the filter email. You can do that by going to yesio.io forward slash the filter. Right. Three stories as usual.

What is Brave AI?

00:00:30
Speaker
The first one, brave AI. What is brave AI?
00:00:34
Speaker
Well, Brave is a browser, so you might be using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome or Firefox or Netscape if you want to keep it really old-school. But Brave is a privacy-first browser. There's a few of these. DuckDuckGo has a really good privacy-first browser as well. Privacy-first just means they don't store loads of information about you. But what's interesting about Brave is that they now have an AI search function.
00:00:58
Speaker
Now this sort of is a search engine, this sort of isn't, but you search and the results are given to you in a similar way to how chatgbt or someone might, but then you still have the links through to the articles rather than the search engine AI just giving you all the information like chatgbt might. It's interesting because this could be a massive shift in the way we do SEO. It could kill SEO. No, it won't do that.
00:01:24
Speaker
But it's interesting, I just thought I'd mention Brave browser because I think a lot of people might just be locked into using Microsoft Edge or Chrome without realizing there's lots of viable advances. Opera's really good as well. So there's Brave AI. That's the first story of interest.

Impact of Blocking Third-Party Cookies

00:01:39
Speaker
Second story, a little reminder that Google Chrome is killing off or blocking third party cookies. What does this mean to you as a business owner or a website guy or an SEO or whatever?
00:01:51
Speaker
It's complex, but I'm raising it just to get you thinking about it and so you can do your own research. Note the language. Google Chrome are killing off third party cookies. I think this means that they're still going to allow Google Analytics and any of the Google tools to still work because, hey, it's Google, so Google, Google, Google, Google, shout Google, Google.
00:02:15
Speaker
Google, my daughter's here in the office. So just have a look because it could fundamentally change the way a lot of the web works if the biggest browser blocks cookies. It's good thing for privacy, slightly complicated if you're actually site owner. There is a possible downside as well if you are a website user. Hey, are you a website user? A website user because things like saving your login, that might become more complex.

Exploring Harrow for SEO and PR

00:02:45
Speaker
Third story, Harrow is dead. If you don't know what Harrow is, it stands for, I was going to sign it. I might as well sign it. Help a reporter out.
00:02:57
Speaker
Now, this is a service that ran for years and years. It was run by an organisation called Cision, C-I-S-S-I-O-N, who are a PR database that you can pay an incredible amount of money per month to be a subscriber to. The whole idea of Harrow was that if reporters were writing an article and they needed expert sources,
00:03:18
Speaker
They'd put the call out to Harrow and all the people on the Harrow subscribers list would have a chance to pitch to be the one to give that answer. I used it a lot. In fact, on our notion, on our project management board, we've still got an old task, which was to find a way of filtering what became thousands of requests every day, filtering them down to things our clients would find useful. Because if you get a quote, and I've had several quotes through this method,
00:03:46
Speaker
then the website talking about you gives a link back to your website so from an SEO perspective it's really good for link building in a very organic natural way that proves your authority and from well an authority perspective and PR and brand building it's where you're getting your brand out there so you can find me on well SEO news websites and
00:04:06
Speaker
studio equipment and guitar sites and things like that. But it's dead.

Challenges with Harrow and AI Misuse

00:04:11
Speaker
It's gone. It's being replaced by something slightly different. And I've got to say I've got mixed feelings about this, because I think when AI came along, Harrow, the journalist putting out requests, just started to get swamped. Because, well, put it this way, because of some people at SEO, we can't have nice things.
00:04:32
Speaker
And you could use AI to quite easily read every single request and send out a pitch or a quote for every single thing. And in this article I'm going to link to, there are people saying they did that. I don't want to say people who should know better, but there are people who did that. So yeah, this is why we can't have nice things.
00:04:54
Speaker
But things like this are generally quite positive because when one tool that's been abused gets taken away, generally a better tool that's more useful and has a longer shelf life comes along. And Tilesio ruins that as well, but there you go.

Episode Recap

00:05:09
Speaker
Brave AI, go and have a look. Download the Brave browser. I use it myself. Third-party cookies, just remember. There you go, another bit of sign language for you today. And Harrow, H-A-R-O.
00:05:21
Speaker
