Introduction and Movie Overview

00:00:01
Speaker
Hello and welcome to two guys, one screen. ah My name is Nick. And I'm Gerald. And today we are reviewing a movie from 2007, Vacancy, ah directed by one Nimrod Antle, ah quite the name. ah Movie stars, Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsdale. And that dude, ah who was the guy from the The manager in the store, he's the manager, he was the dude in Pulp Fiction that ah was laying on the couch that Samuel L. Jackson just shoots a bunch of times. Oh yeah? Fun fact, yeah, it's the same guy. That's crazy. um We picked this movie because it's one that I've been begging Gerald to watch for, I don't know, at least a year. No, less than a year. Probably like six months. Six months, I've been begging him to watch.
00:00:54
Speaker
um And it's a movie that i'm I'm pretty fond of, I would say. um So this is your first watch. What, you know, overall thoughts?

Initial Impressions

00:01:04
Speaker
Overall, I liked it. I feel like there're there's definitely some flaws. Oh, for sure. For sure flaws. If you put all the the stupidity of the characters aside, but like, how would you act in this situation? I feel like that's what it boils down to. Yeah.
00:01:25
Speaker
I would say, and we're going to get to it because we're going to give you a scene by scene breakdown, but there's really only one move that takes me out of the movie. But I feel like everything else they do kind of, oh there's two things, but there's really only two things that kind of detract me from their, but most of the decisions they make, I would say I would probably make as well.

Plot Setup

00:01:48
Speaker
um The movie opens with ah Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsdale. They are a married couple with a rocky marriage. um They are driving on a road. It's dark. um Kate Beckinsdale is asleep in the car, and they there's a raccoon in the middle of the road, and they swerve kind of aggressively. Here's here's the thing, right? if you're swer Have you ever had to swerve for an animal in the road?
00:02:18
Speaker
No, but I've had this work for for other reasons. So I almost had a squirrel once and you know, I swerved and I want to hurt the squirrel. Right. I don't care about my car. I just didn't want to hurt the squirrel, but. In no. Like sense of the imagination and am am I doing a complete like 360 when I'm trying to avoid this animal, right? Right. I mean, that's like Hollywood a little bit.
00:02:43
Speaker
what I thought and this is another thing that I thought and maybe this is a long shot, but I feel like the way this scene Happens he kind of looks at her and he's like, oh this bitch is asleep yeah and Yeah, so there's a raccoon and he just swerves he's like, oh you awake now This is they have a very passive-aggressive. Oh the entire so for sure it's very evident that they're on the outs which you find out later right but Um, they hint at it. Yeah. So they swerve, um, get into a little

Motel Arrival and Suspense

00:03:19
Speaker
riff. By the way, they're using a map. This movie came out in 2007. Don't you think they had shut out map? That's what I'm saying. Like, don't you have map quest? You could have printed out your directions. It'll tell you everything. Well, I know, I guess it it wouldn't help because the whole reason that they're on this road is because there was a crash on the interstate and he took
00:03:40
Speaker
these back roads to try and avoid traffic, which you'll find out is not a good idea. Uh, but so they drive to this, the motel gas station garage thing and they're like, Oh, there's no one here. And then surprise, surprise, the mechanic jump scares them by banging onto the window. And he's like, Oh, can you help me? And he's like, opens the hood and he's like, Oh, your fan is broken.
00:04:11
Speaker
Like, what does that even mean, first of all? Second of all, he's like, yeah, you can drive it. It'll just be a little noisy. And I'm like, okay, thanks. Well, this creepy dude, Hans Amy, who's the chick, her name's Amy, David and Amy, uh, Hans Amy, a sparkler, like that you'd have on the 4th of July.
00:04:37
Speaker
And he's like, Oh, every day is 4th of July here. Like completely stupid. And then she's like very bad vibes, but she's very interested in this sparkler. And David's like, Oh, should I just buy you a box of sparklers? Will that make you happy? Like if you're that low in your relationship that you need sparklers, that's pretty sad. Um,
00:05:03
Speaker
So then they, they start driving back cause he tells them like where the nearest town is. It's like 30 miles away or some shit, but then the car completely breaks down and they're like, she wants to just like stay in the car and wait until daytime for someone to drive by or to go back. Uh, he said, no, we're just going to go back now. Bad idea. Why, why are you doing that?
00:05:34
Speaker
I mean, it's there was a motel, and at that point, I don't think it's like, all right, you made the wrong decision. I think what happens following that is like, you dude, the writing's over the wall. And she's all for like, hey, we should not be in this place.
00:05:50
Speaker
um I don't believe it. Yeah, so they they get to the the motel, and they meet by walking walking, and they meet the manager of the hotel, who I guess his name is Mason. I don't think they ever say his name.
00:06:02
Speaker
Um, they never say it, but it, but yeah, this was on the. asking Right. His mask of sanity slowly slipping off throughout this entire film. I really enjoyed watching. Cause like by the end, he's just a full blown maniac. Yeah. Um, and they have this, well, they, they get in, they get in the manager's office and there's a door behind the desk and they hear a woman screaming. How are you not like, all right, we should probably dip.
00:06:30
Speaker
So at first I was like, is this woman getting murdered or is she getting plowed?
00:06:39
Speaker
Because like, no, no, because but listen, hear me out, hear me out. Part of her screams were like, she's obviously in pain, right? Do you want to replicate the screams for the pod? No, not yet.
00:06:56
Speaker
But yeah, he peaks out the door. Amy doesn't like it. She's like, oh, we should just go. And David's like, no, it's all right. It's all right. We need to talk to this guy. he Mason like blames the phone. what He was tolds like, oh, yeah, you know. And he was holding a phone or something, or a radio. The remote for the TV. Ah, the remote for the TV. He turns off the TV. Which becomes like, I know what that is. He's like, oh, I'm watching a movie. I'm sorry. It's

Revelations and Panic

00:07:21
Speaker
OK. Also, this guy, this manager,
00:07:25
Speaker
At the beginning, I feel like he's almost supposed to be like a parody. Like how he starts out. In what way? Like he's like the... he it really gives strong Ned Flanders vibes.
00:07:40
Speaker
Fair enough. Like hi Diddle Leo neighbors, like... He does talk a little weird. Does it say where it takes place? I guess it doesn't say there's on some road. No, I don't know. They're from California. Right. I think they're so goddamn big. I think they're driving home ah because the whole reason that they were on this road trip was they were going to a family reunion thing. Right. Something like that. Right. They talk about later. Yeah. Yeah. um But there's this weird thing um we're trying to get a hold of.
00:08:11
Speaker
of the mechanic or use the the telephone. um And he's like, oh yeah, I got dimes if you need them. It only takes dimes. um And he goes to swap out dimes. And I could be crazy, but I counted in my head the little jingles of the dimes into his hand. And he gave him 11 dimes. Well, David's like, hey, man, it doesn't have to be exact change. like I'm not. yeah And then he swaps one out.
00:08:37
Speaker
Right. and the So like you're oddly particular about your dimes for whatever reason. um This guy's very oddly particular about a lot of things. A lot of things. So he they swap the dimes out and he go him in. I'm sorry. Fucking David and Amy get to the door and he's like, well, you know, actually no one's going to answer, meaning a mechanic or whoever he was going to try to call. So he's like, I guess I don't need the dimes then.
00:09:07
Speaker
Like, why the fuck did you not tell us this earlier? Why did we go through this whole thing with you counting these dimes out? This whole rigamarole. um And he's like, oh, you know, well, you can you can just stay here. um And obviously, Amy and David have a disagreement that David was like, oh, we should stay here. And Amy's kind of like having that little whisper fight that couples have in public, like we're not staying here. She's not she's not for it. He's like, yeah, OK. Yeah, we'll stay. Yeah, sure. We'll stay.
00:09:32
Speaker
um So they get to the room and they're oh hold on home and this I thought this was funny. He's like. ah The manager was like, oh, ah be careful with that doorknob. It's as sticky as an old whore. I was like, what do we what? and the and the And Amy is like, how could you say this? Like, sorry for my language, ma'am.
00:09:54
Speaker
Yeah, like, you can already tell this guy's not professional. Not at all. um And then basically from this point forward, the movie basically goes, you know, pedal to the metal, foot on the gas, and it doesn't stop for the rest of the film. um The back of the Blu-ray says, it's psycho meets saw. It's funny, we're going to talk about movies that you'd recommend i'd like I'd recommend if you like this. And Psycho was one of them, if you haven't seen Psycho somehow.
00:10:22
Speaker
um yeah I don't agree with the meat saw. Yeah, I mean, we can talk about that when we get there, I think. We can get in there. Saw, I mean, yeah, I don't know if I fully agree with saw. it it's were It's more of like a reversed home invasion. So that's, yeah, we'll we'll get into that. Okay.
00:10:42
Speaker
um All right, so they're in the room. They're kind of checking out the room. It's gross. She's this place is sleeping in my clothes. He's like, I'm sleeping in my shoes and takes his shoes off. But right. Yeah, she goes into the bathroom and turns on the light switch and a cockroach falls, which, by the way, gross is not like a North American cockroach. This is like one of the Madagascar cockroaches. Oh, someone studied his bugs. um Watch out.
00:11:05
Speaker
um
00:11:08
Speaker
Yeah, so the hotel room is nasty and Here's a fun fact, by the way. go ahead um I've stayed in a hotel like this before. was it the i dont kind i would i would guess but go ahead where was it It was in Atlantic City. Oh, what a surprise.
00:11:29
Speaker
ah yeah so ah it was for ah My fiance's friend's 21st birthday party and her dad was supposed to have us a room booked at the Tropicana You know an actual nice hotel five-star hotel in Atlantic City ah Come to find out the day that we get there He didn't want to pay for it because he realized how much it was gonna be so he rents us this run down like paint falling off of the walls and
00:12:01
Speaker
only there's four of us and there was only two beds. brother Sorry, there was five of us, two beds. So we had to like all huddle. Three of people had to huddle in one bed. And then me and my fiance were in another bed. But we did not sleep under the covers. No, we sleep in all the clothes. And the door didn't even like lock completely. Right. We kind of had to like jiggle it a little for it to get stuck.
00:12:31
Speaker
sticky as a whore

Desperate Escapes

00:12:32
Speaker
that's what i'm saying and the tv only had one channel that's unfortunate oh yeah so so similarly when uh when david goes to the tv on there's just all static there's no there's no working tv channels um but that happens actually a little bit later so they're in the room and all of a sudden they're just banging on the door uh And it turns out it's the room next to them. um But what we forgot to mention was the manager, when they first got the keys, tells them, oh, there's no one else here. It's just all empty. So they're they're at a vacant you know motel, but there's bang on this door. So there's this whole back and forth between Owen owen Wilson, David getting mad, and at this guy banging. He just starts banging back at him. Luke Wilson, not Owen Wilson.
00:13:21
Speaker
Yeah, whatever. So they all the same people to me. This this is my thing. I've seen a lot of the Wilson brother movies, like most of their stuff, a lot of the Wes Anderson stuff. And like, do you think when they portray and maybe you haven't seen enough films when they portray like that they're angry or frustrated, do you buy it? No.
00:13:41
Speaker
Like, like if, ah um, if Luke Wilson or Owen Wilson for that matter was my father and they were like going to try to discipline me for something, I would probably laugh in their face. I just yeah gotta go go to your room now. No, I don't, I don't buy it. So your room's as sticky as a whore. I don't like your language. Um,
00:14:07
Speaker
So eventually, Luke Wilson's like, I'm sick of this shit. I'm going to the manager. He goes to the manager um and tells him like, hey, this is banging on the door. And the manager, I don't remember what he says, but he gives him a hard time again. He's like, yeah, there's nobody here. you know What are you talking about? Kind of a goof. So they go back, and he's like, oh, they you know oh ah Luke Wilson and David's probably like, oh, they probably just left because it's something to go get the manager. So he goes to lay down.
00:14:36
Speaker
And the TVs, like I said, is not working. It's just like static. And he finds these videotapes or a videotape. Several videotapes. Yeah. um Unlabeled, unlabeled. And this is like, first of all, you nosy man ah puts it in and it's like.
00:14:59
Speaker
It's like a snuff film. It's like a B and E breaking entering Murder scene. Yeah, it looks like yeah, it's a it it seemed like a film um And they kind of quickly put together that ah oh, this is the room we're in oh Which I was like, oh shit. The first time I watched it, I was like, oh shit, that's the room they're in. This time, because i it was a rewatch, I i knew. um it it It kind of reminded me of the um the scenes in Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. That was one of my films. When they were ah videotaping the murder of those people, I was like, they definitely took inspiration from that. For sure. Also, if you haven't seen Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer, go watch that film now.
00:15:47
Speaker
Yeah, also there was this funny moment where, I don't know if you caught this, but um so oh ah I wrote Owen Wilson like so many times, fuck. So Luke Wilson, Luke Wilson, he goes to lay on the bed and she's like, Kate Beckins though is like, you're just gonna lay there and watch TV? He's like, yeah, I gotta unwind. And he turns the TV on and he like pauses for a moment.
00:16:16
Speaker
And he sniffs the remote.
00:16:21
Speaker
he there moment know And his face is like, oh, this is disgusting. And I'm like, who let him ad lib in sniffing the remote? What what if that was written into the script? ah I'm concerned. I mean, this man, this man Nimrod, ah he's not directed any movies of value besides this one.
00:16:39
Speaker
Um, so maybe it was, but I mean, it was just so funny that he just like quickly sniffed. It was like, Oh, this is gross. Ew. Cause everything in this room looks like it's straight out like the 1980s. Like this, place has not been upgrade it needs a renovation for sure. Even like they had a TV guide and he's like, Oh, do you want to watch what was on from 1987? Right.
00:17:01
Speaker
um Alright, so they put together that the video tapes were filmed in the room they're staying in and then they locate all the hidden cameras and me I mean this happens but immediately I'm like I'm covering up these goddamn cameras like that. He covers up some of them later. Later, but i I would be doing that off the rip because that means they're watching and they know what's going on. They know you figured out what they are. Right.

Hidden Dangers

00:17:26
Speaker
um So then, as they're watching one of the videos, also, Kate Beckins is like, turn that off. And he's like, no. yeah Right. ah She's like, I don't want to hear this anymore, because it's just like women screaming because they're being tortured and murdered. Right. And he's just like, no, I want to watch it. um But I think he's watching it more for like, I got to, he says it later, like, I'm looking for weaknesses. Like, I want to figure out how to how to beat this. Which makes sense. He's not doing it for some weird fetish thing. Right.
00:17:58
Speaker
Um, so as they're watching one of the films, the power cuts, and then it kind of flickers on and off back and forth. That was cool. Yes. That was a cool scene for sure. Um, and then like, we gotta to get the fuck out of here. So they run to the bathroom and they go to break the window, but it's like, well, not break it. They try to like open the window and it's a, it's nailed shut fuckers. Not that they were going to fit out that window anyways, you know? Yeah. Uh,
00:18:27
Speaker
And then while they're in the bathroom, they notice, I guess she had an apple in the car at one point, and that apple's made its way into the bathroom. So this dumb bitch, right, at the beginning of the movie, um she wants to eat this apple, right? Yeah. As they're driving, they're they're at least going like probably like 70 miles an hour on this road, right? And she's like, I'm going to cut this apple right while they're driving. So like when he he like hits a bump or something, and she cuts her finger,
00:18:56
Speaker
on the knife. Like, why? but And he even says it. He's like, oh, uh, why don't you just bite the apple like a normal person? She's like, you know, it hurts my teens. I'm not going to lie. I miss that. And that makes me angry. Yeah. What are we doing? Eat the apple. My dad eats an apple like every day in the car and he just chews it like an adult and just chew it and then eats the core out of the window. It it degrades. It's fine. It's fine.
00:19:26
Speaker
Um, but yeah, the apple shows back up in the bathroom on the sink. So there he's like, did you bring that apple in here? And she's like, no, why would I bring the apple in here? I bled all over it. You want to eat a bloody apple there, David? Uh, there, David. So there, the vibe is still like, we gotta to get out of here.
00:19:48
Speaker
Um, so they go to make a run for it. Um, and that's when like the, the henchmen or like the dudes in the mask appear for the first time. They kind of like walk out of the dark, which was kind of a cool shot. Uh, and immediately they're like, Oh, we got to run back now. And on the run back.
00:20:06
Speaker
ah Ashley, whatever her name is, Kate Beckinsdale, she drops her cell phone. Amy. Amy, whatever, I'm sorry. um Drops her cell phone and leaves it and while they're getting chased, one of the the henchmen step on it and I assume they break it. Right, because you don't see it. Yeah, it doesn't come back. They show his foot on it, but that's all they show. um Have you ever seen the movie Hush from 2016? No, I'm going to watch this, it's a Mike Flanagan I haven't seen.
00:20:36
Speaker
so it's a great movie but there's a recommendation for you but the masks that these guys are wearing look exactly like the mask from hush i'll have to watch hush hush came out like you know 2016 this came out 2007 but i have it's just another home invasion movie that right all right so they dropped the phone and then and then uh David's like, Oh, we gotta, I gotta get to the telephone booth. Like we gotta contact 911. This was hilarious. And he was like, Oh, all right, Amy, you go to the bathroom window and pretend like you're trying to get out as like a distraction and I'll run to the telephone booth. So David runs the telephone booth. Also, there was a great jump scare here where like the, one of the dudes in the master just like in the window and she didn't see it. And then she like catches him. She's like, Oh, that was a, that was a good jump scare.
00:21:34
Speaker
And it was really nice because the ah the bathroom window is one of those like kind of like glossed windows where you can't really see in. So like his face was all distorted. But you can make out there's a guy there. Yeah, it was it was a good scene. um He calls 911.
00:21:49
Speaker
and The 911 operator turns out to be, I guess, the manager. I guess it's Mason. Yeah. And he says some weird thing like, oh, you got to keep your cool if you want to make it out alive or

Tense Confrontations

00:22:00
Speaker
something like that. Yeah. Then he's like Mr. Fox, which is his last name. And then he was like, huh? Oh, shit. Huh? And then probably my favorite part of the movie out of nowhere.
00:22:13
Speaker
out of nowhere one of the henchmen is in a car yeah going full speed at this man in the phone booth and he's like oh shit so he's got a whole ass out of this phone booth the guy completely destroys the phone booth with the car and he's like out by the way he's out running this car yeah sure why not Why not? And yeah, Amy's like, come on, like yelling at him from the room, like, come on, come on. And then he somehow evades the car and gets into the room. Also, the next part ah kind of confused me. ah He goes in, he he goes back into the room and he like punches a mirror or something and he makes a shank like out of the out of the glass. I don't think he ever uses it.
00:23:04
Speaker
No, he doesn't. It just, it it gets made and he wraps a towel around it and then it never, and like at the end, we'll get to, he gets stabbed. Like it would have really helped you there, bud. Yeah. He's like, I got to protect myself. Um, so then he's watching the the videos again. Yeah. She falls asleep. She falls asleep in the corner because she's on, um, medicine, a bunch of different pills. She's popping pills. I think they're prescription.
00:23:28
Speaker
That's what happens when you're in a divorce. So um so he is watching the videos, and he's like, this dude just appears out of nowhere from one of the camera angles. He's trying to figure out what it is. And they figure out there's a vent or you know a a duct system yeah underneath the bath mat. Which, by the way, the bath mat is like a towel. yeah It's not like a bed mat. It's like a shag. It's like a shag. I don't know what it is, but it definitely has mold.
00:23:57
Speaker
Definitely has mold definitely has mold and Okay, so they they discover that um and as I just as he discovers that that random trucker arrives and Did you so did you think on your first watch that this guy was one of them or that he was? possibly help I I kind of thought it was help and I think I thought that he would I thought I think initially was like oh he's with them and then he got out of the truck and he wasn't wearing a mask and I was like oh maybe he's just a dude that wants to assist these people but yet and he was looking around all confused so I will get to that so
00:24:37
Speaker
they So ah they see him, they start banging on the window. And also, they're not really signaling for help. They're just kind of banging on the window. They're just like, right. So this guy's like, the fuck is happening? And he's just looking at them like mouth open like, huh? And he's just walking closer and closer. And then you see the henchmen come out from behind him like, oh, this guy's going to get murdered. And and the instead of like, they're like pointing like, yo, turn around, turn around.
00:25:07
Speaker
Well, and then out of the corner of the screen, the manager comes with a box and he hands it to him. He's like, hey, they're all there is good stuff. And it's a box of the videotapes that they were watching. Is that what that was? I miss that. Oh, so they're so they're like kidnapping and like murdering people, making snuff films and selling them to people, which I don't I don't you know condone that behavior. But for the sake of a movie, pretty cool.
00:25:38
Speaker
Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of movies out there about like snuff films, right? So honestly, I felt like with that whole scene because they they point like maybe twice, but he's just so can he's just so confused. I'm like, are you autistic? Like what? usually He's just like has such a confused look on his face. I believe the oblivious. um But maybe if he was if if the guy gave him tapes, which I didn't pick up on and I was that's a nice pickup.
00:26:06
Speaker
um Not the tape, like it's nice that you caught that he's giving him tapes. not you I don't want to watch them, so thank you. um I guess he could be, then he was in on it, and like, he's not gonna help these people. Alright, so that happened, and they know they're coming, and they're like, alright, down the hatch we go. So they go down this hatch, and they're in a tunnel system. is I don't like this idea.
00:26:33
Speaker
we can don't Don't why are you going? I know you need to get out But I think going down into the the tunnel that you have to crawl through It's probably not the best idea. I I Think I follow the logic. I think I would do it You're gonna go into a tunnel that you have no idea where it goes. Yeah all What else are you gonna do at this point? You gotta to run outside?
00:26:59
Speaker
No, but I feel like it's it's probably better to like bunker down. Like, you know where they're coming from now. You found the tunnel, like the trap door. Sure. Why don't you just like bunker down? Well, OK. And try to that point. Don't put a pin in that. Let me get to this part in the movie. I'm going to I want to bring it up. um So they're in the hatch and then homegirls freaking out. And David's like, all right, you can't scream. And there are rats or mice, whatever the rats.
00:27:28
Speaker
All in the tunnel. Start crawling or crawl on her. Start crawling on her. And all I can think of in my head is is that song from Ghost Rats.
00:27:40
Speaker
ah They make it, they they push through the rats and they end up in the office. Now, a me this is this is the beginning of bad decisions for me.
00:27:55
Speaker
They're in the office. They know exactly where that gun is. They're looking around and Amy literally says like, Oh, there has to be something here that can help us. And David opens the door to like the the front and the, the, if he's opening the door, the gun is directly above his head and he just closes the door. Right. Terrible decision. Because he saw the guns. Yeah. When he, when he told those work.
00:28:23
Speaker
Yeah, like you're going to need one. Like when you told him about the people not all time bad decision. um They find a phone that's not going to call the same people and they do get through to 911. But ah Amy is unable to say what's going on because they have to leave again. Yeah, she doesn't know the address. They're like, what's the address? And she's like, I don't know. We're just at the pine woods. I just don't help us. Yeah, um they go back down into the tunnels.
00:28:54
Speaker
Um, because at this point, the manager and his henchmen and his goons know they're in the tunnels. Um, and he, and at this point he notices that the phone's off the, off the line. And like, there's a lady going, hello. It's like the 911 dispatch lady.
00:29:10
Speaker
That shit's off the hook. And this is when he kind of starts to become an insane person. He like freaks the hell out over this. <unk>s like He's like, under us. And ah while they're in the tunnels, they realize, oh, we can just go left here or right, whatever it was, and not go the same way we came. So they turn. So when the henchmen go down to follow them, they have no idea which way they went. And then they're out. So.
00:29:39
Speaker
ah David and Amy end up. It's not in like a I don't know where it is. It looks like ah like an old fashioned like convenience store. um And this is where I'm going to challenge you on the hunker down thing. They push the entire counter on top of this hatch to like camp out there. And this dude, this henchman pushes the door up with one hand and is swinging at them with a knife.
00:30:08
Speaker
He this guy has a stronger man like Wayne Johnson man like world's strongest man Mark Henry slash shit How is he if that's possible?

Climactic Showdown

00:30:19
Speaker
In this film them hunkering down in the hotel room probably wasn't gonna work Also, I'm pretty sure that ah The manager probably has the keys to their apartment. Anyways, I think he's just playing with them you know, I mean um I think he enjoys the thrill of like Chasing him down. You think he's getting awfully I think so. Yeah for sure beating it. Um, maybe They're chilling in this retro convenience store and ah The police show up now this is This is my next beef not with just this movie but with like just a couple of several
00:31:03
Speaker
um Why do we always have the oldest police officers ah on them? What was this old fat guy gonna do? This guy is the definition of boomer boomer. I mean he I Don't know what ah granted. He did pick up on like these guys are psychos Sure, but say he finds one of the guys, right? Is he gonna chase him? Yeah, no, no No, I i mean they cannot run him And it's not like modern ah police officers where they have like the little thing, the little ah radio connected to them. Yeah. Like, hey, we need backup. Like, no, he would have to go back to his car. Yeah. Fun fact. Fun fact. He'll make it there. Where there is a shotgun. um so Which they don't take. that so well Oh, yeah. We're going to get there. OK.
00:31:52
Speaker
they ah David and Amy see the police over there running out of there. Don't shoot us. And honestly, I kind of wish you would have shot him, but. Oh, well, look, before that, the. He meets with the manager like the manager comes out. Oh, the yeah, I forgot. spar And he's like, no, we don't. We're all vacant today. We don't have anybody here. He's like, but this is such a. But the call came from here, sir. They know.
00:32:18
Speaker
I don't know what you're talking about. He's like, oh, then you won't mind me ah looking around. He's like, go for it. He's like, slow season for you. All four seasons are slow for me. So he's like, and then he finds the the smash telephone booth. Yeah, he's like,
00:32:33
Speaker
You fixing that in your free time? Yeah, he's like, are you taking care of all them guests? He's like, oh, yeah, I just haven't gone around to it. He's like, all right. Yeah. He's like, all right, then I'm going to have to, I have to look in these rooms. Right. He was like, yeah, no problem. So he's like going through the the classic key gag. Oh, got the wrong keys. Let me go back to the office. Yeah. So.
00:32:59
Speaker
the cops like, all right, so he just, you know, nonchalantly just tries to handle as anybody would, but it opens. Right. So he walks in and he sees one of the TVs is busted. Right. And they're all connecting rooms, by the way, which I didn't like. Yeah, that's kind of common, though. Is it? I think it is. I mean, I've been to a lot of hotels that the firms are like connected if you want them to be.
00:33:26
Speaker
Yeah, but aren't yeah, if you want them to be but like these like that's they're in the honeymoon suite Yeah, they should be left alone. They're they're trying to fuck theoretically Theoretically, they're not they're gonna divorce. no They're gonna divorce Hate fuck. Uh, yeah, why not get one out? It probably would have calm the mood um So, yeah, they see they see the police officer or he he sees like a light flashing from under one of the connecting rooms and yeah so he opens it and ah the videos are playing like the tapes are playing he's like oh shit oh shit he pulls out his gun and this guy's like shaking he's like so nervous he's like oh my god in his life like how did this guy pass the academy 45 years in the force I've never shot my gun yeah like he is so like petrified like he's never done this before not once in his life
00:34:19
Speaker
Um, so he goes back outside and they see ah like nervous finally they come running over to him. Yeah. They go in the cop car and there's a shotgun placed center frame. They make sure you see it. They make sure you see it. Actually, they make sure that Luke Wilson David touches it, touches it with his hand and they don't bring it. So he's in the car and he's trying to turn the car on, but it's not turning on. It's going, do, do, do, do, do, do. You know, the classic car thing.
00:34:48
Speaker
right they cut the wire so he gets out and he opens the hood and they cut the battery too so right classic jump scare he puts the hood down and one of the goons comes from behind him and stabs him so they just killed a cop right and and and like yeah so they were going to die now and they're like oh Don't take the shotgun. They grab the shotgun with their hand. And they start running back to one of the rooms, and the manager comes out, and he's like, oh, look what you did. You had to bring this guy into it, didn't you? You had to drag him into this. Yeah. And then this is, for me, the continuation of bad decisions. They stash Amy in the ceiling, and he's like, I've got to go back and get the gun.
00:35:46
Speaker
And it's like, dude, you could have gotten it was in your hand.
00:35:51
Speaker
And he had one when they, when they sneaked it, when they snuck into the, the manager office the first time he was right, he was right under it. Right. And he's going back for that gun. So they, he stashes her in the ceiling and then it gets like, he opens the door and he's just right there. The guy's just right there waiting. He's just right there. Just gets fucking stabbed. So, uh,
00:36:14
Speaker
Aimee's like distraught, even though they're getting divorced. like they Yeah, they start from magically like falling in love again through this whole thing. Make sure to hug her. When he puts her up in the ceiling, he's like yes and it's like, I love you. And she's just crying. She doesn't say it back, but like she wants to. But she knows that like yeah yeah you might be saving my life, but I so still don't want to be with you. I'm still taking kids in half the house. Right.
00:36:44
Speaker
Okay, so he gets stabbed and I think she sits there till morning. Basically, like she she falls asleep in the attic or whatever this place is. Yeah. And then decides to make a full run for it. Get in. What car does she get in? What car is this? It's their run. Which one? Their car. Their car doesn't run. Right. But remember, it's all like a setup from them. Like the people.
00:37:12
Speaker
So you're saying they they placed a car there for her to get in? They're like, oh, get in this car? Yeah, because it's got a, uh, cause they don't have the keys. So there's a screwdriver shoved into the ignition. Like they like hot wired it. Oh, okay. So they they set it up for her. Right. Because they were driving a BMW on the way there and it's like the same color, or same everything. So I'm going to assume it's their car, but they just stole it.
00:37:38
Speaker
They probably just killed somebody else who had that car before. Right. And this is why I don't like sunroofs. Okay. I love it. So she's trying to like, they're nice, but this could happen. Right. She's trying to turn, she turns the car on and the goon, one of the goons like jumps onto the top of the car. Yeah. And breaks through
00:38:06
Speaker
the sunroof and is like trying to like stop her or whatever yeah and so she's driving she can't see anything because like this guy's like dangling in front of her and the other goon is like coming out of the door where she was or no not where she was a different a different room yeah they're pursuing her and this gangster ass bitch good for her Drive straight at this man. No regards breaks right through the side of this motel room and Crushes this guy jams him in there Jams him right up against the wall with the car and he takes his mask off and you find out he's the guy from the garage Yeah, they were all in on it. Yeah, that's the yeah classic. Yeah so then
00:39:02
Speaker
I think she runs to the manager's office again after that just runs back and she grabs a hammer and Then they have her and the the manager have had the final fight Like the final final boss fight He's like

Conclusion and Soundtrack Discussion

00:39:19
Speaker
on top of her like Punching the shit out of her fuck. Yeah. Oh, i yeah, dude. He beat that shit at it like, that's a
00:39:29
Speaker
And then he's like really getting off. He's like, yeah, he's like grabs the camera. He's like, yeah, look at me. Yay. Search recording it on like a handheld camcorder. Shout out 2007. I don't miss those times. Uh, and it's like, look at me, look at me, bitch. And then she's like sick of it and she kicks him in the nards. Um, and then when she grabs the gun and just like.
00:39:57
Speaker
unloads on yeah he's done And then this he's done how'd you feel about the end of like she goes check on Luke Wilson? He's like more actually alive. I hate that dude. He's a alive. Hey listen Okay, so he gets stabbed like in the You know in the not the in the gut somewhere like in his in his gut area right and left there though for like I It's at least because it's daytime by now. Bare minimum. except This man would have been bled out. Yeah. No medical attention. Just you can't stop the bleeding. He's like, Oh my God, you're alive.
00:40:38
Speaker
You shouldn't be. Nope. You should be dead. So the movie kind of like ends with them hugging. Yeah. And like zooms out. And then some like Mission Impossible music starts playing for the end credits. I forgot to say this music's in the intro too. And I fuck with it heavy. I think I fuck with it. But does it fit with the movie though?

Film Recommendations

00:41:02
Speaker
It might not fit with the movie, but I fuck with it heavy.
00:41:06
Speaker
It sounds like straight out of Mission Impossible. I thoroughly enjoyed it in the beginning and at the end. Does it fit the tone? I think you have a very valid point, no. No, not at all. because this move as As much as like the manager is kind of like a fun character, the movie is played very seriously. Sure, absolutely. like It's a straight thriller. um Why don't I ask you this?
00:41:36
Speaker
It happens more in the beginning than the end, but, uh, do you know, like, so they're, when they're in the apartment, oh, and the movie basically ends there. So, um, Luke Wilson and, uh, and K are in the, in the, uh, the room and there's the banging. And then he's like, all right, I'm going to go open the door. And, and, and Kate's like, no, don't. And her hands are like coiled up like at her chest. She's like terrified. If you were in this situation, are you more Luke Wilson or are you more Kate? Because I'm Kate. I'm sitting back like for like i'm like, no, don't touch it. that's That's me. I'm not going anywhere near those doors. No, I'm totally I'm totally Kate Beckinsale in that moment. I'm like, stay at the fuck away from those doors. Let's just hide in the corner and cry. I kind of don't I kind of don't like her character. And I'm
00:42:33
Speaker
I'm fine. She, I think the issue is that she, like the fight or flight response, it's for the majority. Also, this movie is only 80 ish minutes. It's not very long. Um, so there's not a lot of time for character development, but they try to fit it in where they can. Most of the movie, her, uh, fight or flight is always flight. And at the end, she just builds up the courage to, to fight like the manager. It's kind of a turn. You know who she kind of reminds me of?
00:43:04
Speaker
She reminds me of um the chick from the 2008 Hulk. Oh yeah, a little bit. She looks like her. What's her name? Liv Tyler? I'm happy you got part of it because I didn't know all of it. ah She kind of doesn't 100% look like her, but she has like the same like
00:43:28
Speaker
little what she got the same like you know like all right now she has she has the same little like you know scared bitch mentality right um watch 2,000 I did I enjoy that movie a lot um okay my next question to you is what are you gonna be doing this on letterbox so I gave it Initially a three and a half. Okay ah with possibility of a three Possibly the three. Yeah, I'm not saying that it's um, I enjoyed the movie but those little
00:44:14
Speaker
nuances that really kind of take you out of the moment could give it a three on a subsequent watch but ah three stars definitely three and a half is where I'm at right now like you should watch this movie a hundred percent
00:44:31
Speaker
So I'm at I gave it a three and a half my first watch and I was actually thinking about bringing it up to a four four because like the ah stupid character decisions are obviously annoying. But like in this in the grand scheme of like horror slasher genre, isn't that what it's kind of all about?
00:44:51
Speaker
yeah they're kind of they have to be stupid to progress the story yeah and like if i i mean i'm not giving it a five i'm not giving it a four and a half but i might bump it to a four for now it's a three and a half i might bump it to a four i was going to ask you if this movie's underrated but considering you gave it a three and a half or a three i don't think it's underrated it's average on letterbox right now the 2.9 maybe a little underrated i feel I feel like I've never even like really heard of this movie until you told me. so And I'd never heard of it until one of my friends told me. so yeah I don't want to cycle. I don't want to say it's a hidden gem. ah But it's definitely one that you should, if you like the home invasion, revival, thriller. Yeah, so let's get into that. Movies that are like this, if you like you know if you like this movie, you should also watch, or if you like these movies, you should watch this.
00:45:48
Speaker
um So my my Blu-ray copy came is a two pack. It came with the movie called Identity with John Cusack. um It's a little more psychological because the murderer has a disassociative identity disorder. So um it's a little more psychological, but it takes place at a motel and people are getting murdered. um So it fits that kind of vibe. Do you want to give one? We'll go back and forth.
00:46:16
Speaker
So my recommendation is going to be The Strangers. And now I know you... I had The Stranger written down. I don't like it, but I have written down. You don't like The Strangers, but I think The Strangers is probably one of the most so so suspenseful, like, anxiety-inducing movies that I've ever seen. Fair. And if you're into horror, you've probably seen The Strangers, but it kind of plays out kind of similar.
00:46:44
Speaker
Yeah, I think it's a little bit more of a slow burn than this than ah than this movie in Vacancy is and it's it's more straight horror like the yeah and like torture more torture more gore live Tyler live Tyler live Tyler back to her come on the podcast um I Had a couple more Have you seen the movie 13 cameras? I have I So I think that kind of follows the same vibe of like you're being watched and shady shit is going down. um I'm not I don't think that's like the greatest movie ever, but it is in the same vein and probably like the same tier of movie as this is. Panic Room, which I think is David Fincher, I think is way better than Strangers. I'd prefer that to Strangers.
00:47:34
Speaker
um To me, that one builds tension, you know, anxiety-inducing, panic way better. Better than The Strangers? Yeah, Jodie Foster, Forest Whitaker. It's a great movie. I just watched it recently. um Here's two that are maybe kind of related. um I'll go with the more out there one first. And I have a gem called The Hitcher.

Physical Release and Purchase Suggestions

00:48:05
Speaker
the hitcher i think you can make the argument there is a bit of a connection to this where it's like a dude is a dude is stuck in like a kind of a a vast empty like space and there was a guy trying to kill him granted it happens in a truck but sure the hitcher is one of those movies where i feel like it went under the radar but now it's like a cult classic and i'm a part of that cult that movie is banger you know what just just go watch the hitcher go watch it i mean watch vacancy as well it's on max yeah watch vacancy is watch vacancy first sure and then watch the hitcher yeah and then you'll be like wow this is like better maybe four and a half stars yeah i have it at a four right now but hitcher's great um and the last one this might be a bit of a stretch uh you're next
00:49:06
Speaker
I can see it. Yeah. I mean, I don't know who hasn't seen your next at this point. They haven't seen your next. What are you doing? Go watch it. Walmart's putting out a exclusive steelbook coming out in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, that steelbook is kind of mid. It's kind of mid. But if you haven't seen it, you're going to be able to find the movie in stores again. And you're next. I'm sure it's streaming somewhere. It's got to be streaming. That's a good one. Yeah, for sure.
00:49:34
Speaker
And we mentioned it earlier, but my last one is Henry portrait of a serial killer. Oh, dude. Yeah. That's a, that's super duper underrated. I had never heard of it. So you mentioned it to me. That's a Michael Rucker, Michael Rucker, John. His first movie. Uh, yeah, that is a, that's a good one. Definitely. It's a literally a serial killer. Uh, but he,
00:50:03
Speaker
Eventually ends up filming his murders Yeah, it gives the whole like it's not feel vibe but I was gonna I've never seen it, but I've seen parts of it I was gonna say August Underground, but I might just pull that back Definitely more like a serving film don't watch that ah Maybe we're if if we get enough ah requests for it, maybe we'll review it dude Do you really want to be the person that say you've seen a Serbian film three times?
00:50:34
Speaker
I mean, you're already like in the top 1% because you've seen it twice. That's true. How many people have seen it twice out there? Let us know. I should be in the Guinness World Record for most times watched. You know what? There has to be a category for it. That movie is off the chain. ah All right. We have anything else to say about about Vacancy or or Vacancy Adjacent?
00:51:01
Speaker
Go seek it out. Don't don't pay for it. I'd say stream it. Yeah, it's one of those movies that feels like it would be on like IFC or sci fi like on cable television like often or USA or TNT. It gives that via because look at the back of the box. It says it's rated R for brutal violence. But honestly, well, the TV, no the film, the film, the snuff films are kind of rough.
00:51:30
Speaker
You don't really see anything, though. That's true. Like, there's Boob. There is Boob. Hey, yo, how you doing? On the videos. Right. um But they could have easily made this, like, PG-13, and it would still be the same movie. Yeah. um Yeah, I think so. I think they might have to cut a little bit of the snuff film stuff. I think that would be... Yeah. To me, that's the but that's the worst part of it.
00:51:58
Speaker
Cause like, even like when they're in the tunnel with the rats, it's not that bad. Yeah, definitely the, the, the films are definitely the most disturbing part. Oh, and on the saw note, I think the only way it's like saw is that the movie feels like they're in a game. And that's it. Yeah. all i Because, yeah because the killers know what's happening and the killers are watching. them They're not as methodical as like a jigsaw, but they have definitely thought out like they're playing.
00:52:28
Speaker
Yeah, every every little detail is thought out except for, you know, getting the two people that can outsmart them. Alright. Yeah, I'd say stream it first. We're big physical media collectors. It's out of control.

Podcast Conclusion and Personal Stories

00:52:44
Speaker
Way out of control. So we both own this movie physically. If you find it physically, I'm saying no more than 10 bucks.
00:52:52
Speaker
10 bucks is a good. I'm pretty sure I bought it for seven. This is a movie that you could probably find for the same price as a rental. So just buy it. That's where you're going with. Yeah. Like if you rent like ah like if you rent it on Amazon and it's like five ninety nine, you could probably find it for like six or seven dollars like physically. Yeah, that's how I that's how I do. That's my ah justification for purchasing new films. I'm probably the worst person to talk about purchasing new films because I buy buy. You got it.
00:53:23
Speaker
Leave it in. Don't cut this. No. I'm probably the worst person to ask about blind buying films because I just do it all the time. If the cover looks good, I'm buying it. If it has an actor in it that I like, I'm buying it. If it's from a boutique film distributor, you're buying it. If I find an arrow or a stream, I become a bit of a criteria on horror. I'll admit that.
00:53:50
Speaker
And as the podcast goes further on, we'll get more into the physical media aspect, I feel. It's just this movie doesn't have like a big. Well, he's just on Blu-ray, you know, like it's no. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. And they should just keep it as that. Like no boutique needs to pick up vacancy. Also, if they did, I'd be for it. I think, yeah, maybe i hear the consensus on this movie.
00:54:14
Speaker
You want a 4K? For a vacancy? Dude, you know how I am with 4Ks. No, we don't need a 4K. The movie looks fine. There are certain movies that I would say, yes, give it a 4K. This is not one of them. Give it a steal, though. Give it a steal book. Give it a steal book. We are Lionsgate supporters here. Yeah, who put this movie out? Sony? Sony. Are you listening to me? Do something. We know you're listening.
00:54:41
Speaker
Sony, you're listening. I know you're doing a bunch of, you're doing all Disney's physical media release, but... you're trying you're Right now you're busy trying to think about you can ruin Spider-Man for everybody. Right. You know what? Put this out for Halloween, you know? Do us all a favor. Not all of us. I mean, the two of us. but two Do two of us a favor, you know? I would buy it. I don't think, but the problem is if they put it out on a steal, I don't think for $30 I'm going to cop it immediately. No, we got to wait for like Prime Day or something.
00:55:09
Speaker
or wait for it to wind up used with no slip for $6. Man. I'm very angry. What a find. What a find. He found the Saw Steel Book, 4K steel book, no slip cover for six bucks. And he already had it. So he asked me and I said, of course, pick that up immediately. I got released. No big deal. But he sent it to me and it's last noted in Puerto Rico.
00:55:41
Speaker
Dude, can the USPS, look, I know they're busy and they got a lot, I can't even fathom how much mail gets sent and delivered on a daily basis, but if the lady at the ah post office in the area that I live is listening to this, fuck you. How do you put the wrong, first of all, fuck you. She asked you, she put it in completely wrong. Wrong state, wrong everything.
00:56:09
Speaker
so jar Gerald and I, if we we both have a list of films we're looking for physically, um we should actually make a wish list online and see if any of our followers will ah buy this stuff for us. I typically only send Gerald like four to five films at a time. And ah even fives kind of pushing it right But I had 10, the biggest load I've ever sent. How you been? How you doing? i had Dude, I had to two Ghibli steals in there, which yeah I don't know if you guys know those Ghibli steals are like kind of hard to find. Studio Ghibli Steel Books. um And a bunch of other stuff.
00:56:45
Speaker
and I write his address as I've written several times and I bring it to the lady at the front and she looks like she's asleep or that she's just taking a nap and someone just woke her up to be there. um I give her the box and I'm like, I want to send this.
00:57:06
Speaker
And again, remember the last time, very aggressive with the box flipping? I'm like, there's fragile stuff in there, and you're just caution to win. Yeah, like we start and we if we put a steel book in there, we need to tell her that it's fragile now. I have to, because she's an idiot. Also, this was a different woman than last time. It was not the same woman. So this is the second problem I've had at this place. OK. I gave her the box, and without doxing where you live, the state was New Jersey.
00:57:35
Speaker
um This lady puts in Fort Wayne, Indiana. i don't I don't know if you guys are very up on your United States ah geography. New Jersey is nowhere near Indiana. And it takes two days. When we send stuff, it's a day, maybe two days. And this lady puts in Fort Wayne, Indiana. And I'm like, what are you doing? I almost i almost signed off on it. And I was like, oh, is this fucking Fort Wayne, Indiana?
00:58:06
Speaker
So I told her, I was like, hey, you got to change it. Oops. Cut that. Yeah, please. I will cut that. I'm going to mark a clip there so I know. OK. Cut that for sure. I'm like, you wrote the street wrong. Wrong state, too. And then she changed it. And then, you know, I was busy with my life and I was expecting it to deliver like Wednesday. And Gerald tells me it's in Puerto Rico.
00:58:35
Speaker
On the receipt, everything was perfectly fine. It read exactly where it should be. But when I went to the tracking, it said Carolina PR. And I'm like, what is PR? Oh, Puerto Rico. How do you send it to Puerto Rico? Puerto Rico. Do you want a live update on where it is? Pull it up. Here we go. Track shipment.
00:59:06
Speaker
Still moving through the network, your package will arrive later than expected, but it's still on the way. Let us pray. Maybe you should call them. You know what, maybe I should. It's like, and we have $100 tracking on it. This is more than $100. Dude, I don't, I really don't want to shit on them because this never happens, but did it really have to happen with the biggest load?
00:59:29
Speaker
I just want your load, man. That's all I want. Going off the rails. Go ahead. It was mailed out July 29th. Today is Monday, August 5th. It landed in Puerto Rico, July 30th. So it only took a day to get to Puerto Rico. From Massachusetts to New Jersey. Why are we talking about this?
