Introduction: Vegetables and Health Myths

chrisyzen
In this episode of myths and fallacies on the how to actually live longer podcast with me, Christian Jourdanoff, let's talk about the ah eat more vegetables if you want to be healthy, right? They used to say so some time ago, there was one guy, Charles Polyquin, he passed away a couple of years ago, and he used to say, you know, all these nutrition guys, they agree disagree about so many different things,
00:00:31
chrisyzen
But we all agree on one thing, that you gotta eat more vegetables, right? that

Is the Carnivore Diet Ideal for Longevity?

00:00:36
chrisyzen
That was until sort of the carnivore movement sort of came to the mainstream. And now there's some people out there that that are like, actually, vegetables are not necessary. And I don't think the carnivore diet is in any way, shape or form.
00:00:54
chrisyzen
ah the ideal diet for

Are Vegetables Necessary for Nutrients?

00:00:56
chrisyzen
longevity. It definitely has some applicability and I've done it and it's actually a very enjoyable diet if you like animal products like myself. But it's too low carbs, too high in certain inflammatory things. And I'll get to that in ah in a separate episode. But the this eat more vegetable nonsense is a lot like the the more fiber feeds to good bacteria. Now, we're told vegetables have a lot of phytonutrients. And actually, when you look at it, they're phytochemicals that have been sort of branded as nutrients. But if a nutrient is something that you need to live,
00:01:32
chrisyzen
to survive to and or to thrive. There's very few things in

The Antioxidant Myth in Vegetables

00:01:37
chrisyzen
animals or sorry in ah vegetables, there's very few things that are actually strictly necessary for a human to survive and thrive. um In fact, there's there's actually nothing in there that that you can't find either in a better form or in a higher quantity or in a more bioavailable form in animal products, right? So we're told they have a lot of antioxidants. And while some of the things in there are antioxidants, right, in these phytonutrients, a lot of them are just plain old oxidants, like toxicants, like not toxicant, sorry, but basically treated like toxins. And the response

Toxic Elements in Vegetables

00:02:26
chrisyzen
to them by the body can be upregulating liver enzymes, that to a phase two detoxification, sort of ah bolstering our antioxidant defenses and stuff like that. So they can give a stimulus to the body to upregulate certain things. But and and look, don't get me wrong, there's plenty of stuff in plants that is beneficial to humans. But there's also plenty of stuff that is straight up toxic, like the isoflavones, the phytoestrogens, the oxalates.
00:02:55
chrisyzen
the phytic acid, the tannins, the enzyme inhibitors, um ah ah there's various lectins, gluten being one of them that that are definitely not beneficial.

Do Vegetables Contribute to Longevity?

00:03:08
chrisyzen
So there's a ton of stuff in vegetables um that is straight up not not beneficial for us right as well.
00:03:19
chrisyzen
so do Should you eat more vegetables if you want to be healthy, thriving and live a long time? I suppose only if you want to and you tolerate them. If you like vegetables, if you really like them and you're not just forcing yourself to eat them, it's probably okay to eat them. I wouldn't go crazy on the vegetables though because They're actually very low in actual nutrition. Now, we're told that, at least if if you listen to the plant-based propaganda, that vegetables are nutrient dense. They're not calorically dense, but they're nutrient dense. and
00:03:58
chrisyzen
That is bullshit.

Bioavailability of Plant vs. Animal Nutrients

00:04:00
chrisyzen
Yes, they are not calorically dense, but they are not nutrient dense. They are maybe phytochemical dense, but that that does not matter one iota, because you are not made of phytochemicals. You are made of amino acids.
00:04:19
chrisyzen
Amino acids, you know fats, you need glucose, carbohydrates, you need vitamins and minerals. And anyone that tells you that the vitamins and minerals inside a plant cell that is has a lot of indigestible fiber and cellulose and whatever else, that the plant uses as part of its structure, it's very difficult to break down and digest. And we don't even have enzymes for some of the stuff.
00:04:47
chrisyzen
If anyone tells you that the nutrition in there is more bioavailable and more compatible with what a mammal needs as as opposed to like animal foods, right?

Personal Experience: Minimal Vegetable Consumption

00:05:01
chrisyzen
Let's say, you know, steak, milk, eggs, cheese, whatever. If anyone tells you that they are
00:05:09
chrisyzen
very simply incorrect. If they believe it, it's not based on actual like science and like knowledge and and reality. It's based on more than likely religious beliefs that you know we we shouldn't eat animal products, they cause cancer, and and um all we need is fruits and vegetables. right And, uh, that's, that's all I'll say on the topic. I mean, like I, I haven't eaten kale in maybe I've eaten kale like three times in my life. I haven't eaten spinach in years. Uh, I haven't eaten Jesus.

Nutritional Value: Plant Foods vs. Animal Foods

00:05:46
chrisyzen
My wife makes some vegetable stuff once in a while, but, um, I, I don't go out of my way to. To eat vegetables. I mean, we'll have like the bait, like root vegetables, potatoes, carrots, onions, stuff like that. They're okay.
00:06:01
chrisyzen
no no problem here and there but I don't go out of my way to procure vegetables and put them in my diet because that's the other thing I was gonna say is all these vegetables all of this mass is displacing much more nutritious food right so if you if you have 200 grams of cauliflower and 100 grams of broccoli and 100 grams of carrots and you have a half a kilogram How many calories is that gonna be? How much of that is gonna be digest, ah you know, quality ah amino acids protein? How much of that is gonna be decent fats? How much of that yeah is there gonna be actually minerals, right? Not much, ah not gonna be a lot of, ah not gonna be any fat soluble vitamins probably. There's gonna be a few, maybe a a couple of B vitamins, maybe B5, B6, maybe a little bit of the other ones.

Foundation of Diet Recommendations

00:06:53
chrisyzen
might be a bit of vitamin c but what else is there just a bunch of fiber mass a lot of its water content as well so that's why when you do plant-based stuff you have massive poops and you can poop three times a day in these massive poops because you're reading a massive volume of food and very little of that is actually getting digested so you have the massive poops and look if you like massive poops more power to you but that half a kilogram in this example if you if 200 grams of that was steak and then maybe like 50 60 grams is an egg and then maybe you know 200 mils of milk and then 50 grams of cheese just think about the same weight same volume or same weight at least how much more nutrition there will be in the latter example of animal foods you know so doesn't the two do not compare they're in completely different universes and the fact remains
00:07:53
chrisyzen
if you truly are objective about this stuff because I've been plant-based, I've been vegan and vegetarian and I've been carnivore and paleo and keto and you know I've done both without necessarily it having to become my religion or my personality or my part of my who I think I am my identity so objectively I'm looking at it objectively and I swear to God I swear to you to God if eating a lot of vegetables was optimal.

Conclusion: Vegetables in Diet and Health

00:08:24
chrisyzen
And that's what the evidence pointed to, uh, anecdotal scientific and what we see people and what takes, what it takes to get a client to restore their health and start thriving again. If it was all about vegetables and fruits or grains or whole grains, whatever the hell I would, that's what I would be recommending to people, but it's not, that's not what it takes to help a person heal and thrive.
00:08:49
chrisyzen
Right. I just want to do what's best for myself, my family and my clients. And after tens and tens of thousands of hours of researching the stuff, vegetables, not that, not that they don't have any place in the diet, but they're by no means in any way, shape or form necessary to survive or thrive.
00:09:17
chrisyzen
or live a long time that's kind of where where I've that's my view on the topic right now and that's after like trying all of the diets from the one spectrum to the other spectrum so yeah that's uh that's it that's that's all I'll say on the topic this time but you probably know I can pontificate and and talk about this for a very long time so I'll be doing further deep dives on the podcast on some of this stuff but um yeah Thanks for ah watching or listening and I'll see you on the next segment.
