Introduction to 'Fixate Today Gone Tomorrow' and Duggar Family Focus
00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome to Fixate Today Gone Tomorrow. I'm Nikki and I'm not here with my Aunt Joy. Joy is autistic and I have ADHD and I am letting my hyper fixations fly. Today i am fixating on the Duggar family.
00:00:24
Speaker
Welcome back everyone. It's just Nikki today. First of all, I'm going to say I'm recording in a different spot with a different microphone. I am literally wrapped in my sweater trying to make it less echoey.
00:00:37
Speaker
So my apologies if the sound isn't great. I'm doing my best.
Joseph Duggar's Arrest and Charges
00:00:41
Speaker
I'm here with an update on our series about the Duggar family. Anyone who fixates on this topic already knows that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar's seventh child, Joseph Duggar, was arrested on March 18th, 2026.
00:00:54
Speaker
He was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a victim less than 12 years old and with lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older.
00:01:05
Speaker
Two days later, his wife Kendra was also arrested, and Joe got more charges added. They were both charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree and four counts of false imprisonment in the second degree.
00:01:18
Speaker
Kendra bonded out within a couple of hours. But let's talk about what we know so far. The sources I used are the Leaving Eden podcast, the Digging Up the Duggars podcast, the Preacher Boys podcast, People Magazine, Page Six, Five News, TLC's Jill and Jessa Counting On, and the YouTube channels Tough Topic, Pretty Lies and Alibis, and Kiela, K-Y-E-L-U-H is the name of the channel.
00:01:47
Speaker
So let's start by talking about Joe's Arrest. The arrest stemmed from a 2020 family vacation Joe and Kendra took to Panama City Beach, Florida. The victim was on the vacation with them and was only nine years old at the time.
00:01:58
Speaker
The victim alleged that throughout the vacation, Joe would ask her to sit on his lap. When she would, he would cradle her in his arms. Later on during the vacation, he asked her to sit next to him on the couch and covered them both with a blanket.
00:02:13
Speaker
He, quote, manipulated the victim's underwear and grazed her genitals and rubbed her thighs. There were, quote, several incidents of sexual abuse. She claimed that he would touch the top part of her thigh an inch higher.
00:02:27
Speaker
She said that he apologized and the incidents stopped, but she was left, quote, uncomfortable and confused. Joe was 25 years old at the time, and Kendra was pregnant with the couple's third child in three years.
00:02:39
Speaker
The victim is 14 now and participated in a forensic interview. She told her father what happened. Her father confronted Joe on the night of March 17, 2026. Joe quickly admitted what happened, saying that his, quote, intentions were not pure. The following day, the victim's father was asked by detectives to call Joe and attempt to get him to confess once again, which he did.
00:03:02
Speaker
On that call, he said, quote, he touched the victim over her clothing. Joe was booked into the Washington County Jail in Arkansas on March 18, and he will be extradited to Bay County in Florida. The Bay County Sheriff's Office has physical evidence and a witness statement.
00:03:19
Speaker
They say that Joe engaged in, quote, unlawful sexual activity with the victim. The Bay County Sheriff, Tommy Ford, said that Joe will be held accountable, adding, I don't care if he's got a TV show or who he is or what he's done.
Booking Details and Family Connections
00:03:34
Speaker
The video of Joe being booked was released. He appeared to be joking and smiling, but nervously. It's hard to hear, but it sounds like Joe and the officer were talking about his brother, John David, who works part-time at the detention center as a constable.
00:03:48
Speaker
One deputy asks if he'd been to the detention center before, and Joe responded, quote, not on this side. He then goes on to explain about his brother, who is doing, quote, hard time. He also had to take his wedding ring off during the search at the detention center, and an officer actually had to pour some water on his hand for him to get the ring off because it was a little bit too tight on his finger.
00:04:10
Speaker
On March 19th, Joe appeared in front of Judge Taylor Samples via video call where he waived his right to an extradition hearing. The hearing lasted only about a minute. While Joe's been in jail, the only visitor he's had is an attorney. He's had made some a couple phone calls. He called again, I think an attorney. It's kind of a weird call. It's not entirely clear.
00:04:30
Speaker
um But he's also called Kendra, but that's really it. So this first call I referenced, like I said, was possibly to an attorney, but then I feel like it couldn't have been released because of attorney-client privilege. But in this call, Joe said he isn't sure if his father had spoken to him yet, but he wanted to talk to him to see how the process works.
00:04:49
Speaker
Joe laughed uncomfortably when saying he doesn't know how the process works because this is his, quote, first time. The person on the call says that Joe could be held for 30 days before being extradited, but wonders if Joe would be eligible for bond.
00:05:02
Speaker
Joe says that no one's spoken to him about bond or being extradited, but the person on the phone seemed confident that Joe would be granted bond and let out until he was sent to Florida. A call Joe made to Kendra has also been released. On that call, Joe makes it clear that they shouldn't say much. I think
Legal Discussions and Solitary Confinement Impact
00:05:17
Speaker
he knows it's being recorded.
00:05:19
Speaker
Kendra says that she spoke with someone named Travis who agreed to take her on as a client. He can only be Kendra's attorney, she explains, for her specific charges only. She says that she missed his call the day before, so she'd been keeping her phone on her at all times.
00:05:34
Speaker
Joe says that they have to pay for phone calls, but he thinks that they can email for free. They talk more about how much money he has, and she asks if he needs any more. He says he shouldn't, but that Kendra should ask Travis how that all works.
00:05:47
Speaker
She asks about getting his belongings released to her so she can get his phone and other items. She says he already has his iPad and has been working on the list he gave to her and says she'll need his passwords to take over his accounts.
00:06:02
Speaker
She asks if he knows where she's ended up and he cautions her not to say where she is on the call, but she assures him that it is a private place. He tells her that he's trying to keep his spirits up by reading the Bible. He says he was given the quote, NLC version or whatever, and that it includes a devotional that has helped him. I suspect he means the NLT, which is a modern English translation. Duggars and the IBLP historically use the King James version.
00:06:31
Speaker
He says he's been in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. He's been able to read the Bible a lot, but he hasn't been able to sleep. And he says he's in a space that is about eight feet by 10 feet.
00:06:42
Speaker
She then asks him if she can bring him anything to read, but he stops responding and there's silence. It's like he got cut off somehow, but the call was still being
Extradition to Florida and Potential Consequences
00:06:50
Speaker
recorded. So it is a really big deal that he is being extradited to Florida where the alleged crime took place because Florida has some of the strictest child sex abuse laws in the country. And if found guilty, Joe could be facing the rest of his life in prison. All right. So A couple of days after Joe was arrested for this, these charges in Florida, Kendra, his wife was also arrested.
00:07:16
Speaker
She was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in the second degree and four counts of false imprisonment in the second degree. Joe was given the same eight charges in Arkansas in addition to the two charges in Florida.
00:07:29
Speaker
These charges are misdemeanors, but they carry a maximum of eight years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. Kendra was booked in the same Arkansas jail that Joe was on March 20th. Her booking video has also been released publicly.
00:07:42
Speaker
She was released about 90 minutes after being booked. She posted a $1,470 bond. Michelle picked her up and brought her to the private residence that she's staying in And we will talk about that because there was a video of that too.
00:07:57
Speaker
Kendra's charges stem from the initial March 18th report against Joe. Joe's confession allowed investigators to secure a warrant for Joe's arrest, which then triggered a search of Joe and Kendra's home.
00:08:11
Speaker
A source close to the family said that the arrest stemmed from this home inspection. where they found door locks on the exterior of the doors. Now in 2015, Jim Bob and Michelle publicly said that they locked their children in their rooms at night to keep Josh away from them.
00:08:27
Speaker
Josh being their oldest son who was caught molesting some of his sisters. Kendra is scheduled to appear in court at the end of April. right, so now I want to go on and talk about how the family responded. Different family members have made statements. I just want to walk through
Family Reactions and Criticisms of Protective Systems
00:08:41
Speaker
some of those. So first i want to talk about Michelle Duggar.
00:08:44
Speaker
A video has been released of Michelle confronting a member of the media. It seems that this reporter spotted her and he followed her to the likely home that Kendra is staying. And he was just on the road outside of the property. Now, it will say it's gross that this person followed them.
00:09:01
Speaker
I am not condoning that. That's yeah, that's very invasive. That's not OK. But what we're talking about is Michelle's response. Michelle, with her hair in a ponytail and wearing dun-dun-dun capri pants,
00:09:13
Speaker
angrily approached the reporter's car with her phone held up as she records. And then the reporter also started recording and she's yelling at him that he is, quote, interfering with the children. Now, this is the loudest I've ever heard Michelle speak and certainly the angriest I've ever seen her. And I've literally seen every episode of the show.
00:09:33
Speaker
So next, let's talk about Amy Duggar King. She has been very outspoken against the systems that have created ah these, I don't know, avenues for abuse. She is cousin Amy, so she's a Duggar cousin. She's Jim Bob's sister's daughter.
00:09:50
Speaker
Amy released a statement on Instagram. Her first thoughts were with the victim, including the courage it took for this victim to come forward and the heaviness of carrying this alone for so many years.
00:10:01
Speaker
Amy was shocked that it was Joe, but not surprised that another predator from his family system had offended She said, quote, family ties should never equal automatic trust or access, especially when it comes to the safety of children. When an image is protected over trust and silence is chosen over accountability, it creates an environment where abuse can thrive. She also said that she was praying for Kendra and the kids. This statement was made before Kendra's arrest.
00:10:26
Speaker
After Kendra was arrested, Amy again took to social media. She said, quote, I just thought everyone should know that there's more to the story. I don't know what it is, though. So the next response want to talk about is Jill Dillard Duggar.
00:10:40
Speaker
Jill and her husband Derek shared a post on their family blog. Jill learned about the charges through a text message from a friend who saw the media reports. Nobody reached out to Jill to tell her this was happening.
00:10:51
Speaker
She and Derek offered prayers for justice and strength and protection for the victim, as well as prayers for Kendra and the kids. This was before Kendra's arrest, and I don't think Jill has said anything else since then.
00:11:02
Speaker
Jesses Seawald Duggar and her husband Ben released a statement again before Kendra's arrest. They said that this is grievous to God and they are keeping the victim in their prayers. They learned about Joe's arrest with the rest of the world.
00:11:15
Speaker
That's kind of all they said, but this post was deleted after Kendra's arrest. Ginger Vuolo Duggar and her husband Jeremy released a short episode of their podcast on March 25th. Ginger said, quote, I did not think my heart could break like it has this week.
00:11:29
Speaker
The pain and heartbreak that we've had over this and just thinking how it's affected so many. Yeah, it's just unthinkable. It's so hard and painful on so many levels. Jeremy said, quote, thinking about the victim who was brave enough to share her story has been heartbreaking.
00:11:43
Speaker
Just the effect on that young person's life is unimaginable. And then to see the ripple effect of that horrific crime just across the board. It just has so many damaging, rippling effects. I think that's been, for me, the forefront of my mind is just thinking the horror of a crime like that affecting so many for so many years. It's devastating to think about.
00:12:02
Speaker
Ginger spoke about having gone through this before, but didn't actually mention her brother Josh's name. And Jeremy said that they're both feeling just helpless right now. Joanna Forsyth-Duggar also came out with a statement. It was a couple of days after. She kind of was very, she's been pretty transparent about needing to process um she will get into but She said, quote, what has come out about my brother is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. My heart is with the victim and I have grieved by the pain and harm caused. I've been a wreck this week and I'm taking time to process.
00:12:34
Speaker
So Joy and Joe were incredibly close. In fact, on the show, Joe, with his sister's blessings, of course, actually proposed to Kendra at Joyanna's wedding to Austin. It was part of a plan that they came up with together. And they just were they just seemed very, very close. So i can this is just devastating.
00:12:53
Speaker
Jason Duggar and his wife Maddie released a statement. They are angry. it Seems like Jason is very angry. He said, quote, we like many have spent the week completely shocked confused and grieved to list a few emotions we are disgusted to hear the news about my brother however this isn't about how it's impacted our lives Our hearts are burdened because a child's life has been turned upside down due to evil actions of someone who should have never hurt the vulnerable.
00:13:19
Speaker
This is something unthinkable. They are praying for justice, saying that they are dedicated to protecting the vulnerable. Quote, to fathom that someone would abuse their authority to harass the innocent is vile.
00:13:30
Speaker
And they go on to offer prayers for the victim as well as prayers for Joe's kids. Jeremiah Duggar released a social media post a few hours after Jason's statement. but it was to praise his wife Hannah on their fourth anniversary.
00:13:45
Speaker
It mentioned nothing about the things going on or any of the arrests, and he actually disabled the comments on the post, probably wisely. And finally, the last Duggar who made a statement was Josh Duggar through his attorney, Beau Brindley. Beau Brindley spoke to People magazine.
00:14:04
Speaker
so if you really want to hear what Josh Duggar has to say about his brother's arrest to buckle up because it's disgusting. Bo said to People Magazine that Josh and Joe, quote, have not been particularly close for some time, but their familial bond remains strong.
00:14:18
Speaker
He says, quote, Josh sympathizes with the suffering that the public spectacle of criminal accusations creates. And, quote, he has felt the pain of false accusations himself, and he has seen how the media sensationalizes his family's private struggles.
00:14:35
Speaker
Bo goes on to say, Josh, quote, cannot speak to Joe's guilt or innocence, but, quote, he can say that no one deserves to have their lowest moments broadcast for the world for the sake of c clicks and comments.
00:14:48
Speaker
All that to say Josh has not taken any responsibility or accountability for any of his actions that he has been proven guilty of.
Public Spectacle and Denial of Allegations
00:14:56
Speaker
So I want to go on a bit of a side, not not huge side tangent, but I want to, I did a little rewatch.
00:15:03
Speaker
So I rewatched the first episode of Jill and Jessa Counting On before I actually wrote this episode. I knew that Joe was a big part of that first episode, which partly focused on how Josh's scandals impacted his siblings.
00:15:17
Speaker
This episode premiered on December 13th, 2015. Jill, Jessa, Ginger, Joyanna, Janna, John David, Joe, and Josiah were featured as talking heads in this episode.
00:15:29
Speaker
It was really hard to say all those J names in a row. Joe would have been about 20 at that time. You can see how terrible the release of the police report, which brought up all the past trauma, harmed the sisters. And at this point in real time, it's happening all over again.
00:15:44
Speaker
in the episode, they seemed more impacted at the time, new allegations against Josh than they had about the molestation that happened years ago. But according to them, they had time to forgive him for what he did to them and move on. But the Ashley Madison scandal was fresh.
00:16:00
Speaker
The Ashley Madison stuff was more shocking to them than the leaking of the police reports. So I just want to focus on Joe and John David specifically in this part of the episode, but hearing what the other siblings who spoke is really valuable, and I'd recommend watching it if you can find it.
00:16:15
Speaker
However, I had to purchase this episode, so if you can't find it, don't buy it. let's start with John David. John David is Michelle and Jim Bob's third son and Jana's twin brother. In the order of the boys in the family, he's in between Josh and Joe.
00:16:30
Speaker
John David said in this old episode that he felt now he was the one that all the younger siblings are looking up to. And he had to learn how to be the example of what a real man is for his siblings.
00:16:43
Speaker
He said, quote, one of the toughest things I had to tell my older brother was I don't want to be like you anymore. Now, don't quote me this. I don't know a source. I don't remember where i heard this, but I do remember hearing at some point John David had gotten into Josh's face when Josh told his parents about the molestation.
00:17:01
Speaker
and John David told him to keep his hands off his twin sister. I know that the Duggar girls who were Josh's victims must be absolutely crushed right now, but especially Joy Anna, but I feel really terribly for John
Protective Roles and Reflections on Scandals
00:17:12
Speaker
He was not only pushed into Josh's role as the oldest brother, but now he's probably having some sort of reckoning with himself about the alleged crime his little brother perpetrated. I fear, and I could be just making this up, but I fear that he might be blaming himself even in a small way.
00:17:29
Speaker
So also in this episode, Joe spoke about how disappointed he was. So I just want to talk about that a bit. Joe spoke in the episode about the day before the police report of Josh's molestation of his sisters was leaked. He was supposed to be leaving on a missions trip, but his dad told him that it would be difficult leaving the country right now.
00:17:48
Speaker
because Joe would be questioned about everything that was going on without his family there to back him up. Knowing Jim Bub, if this is true, I suspect this was a ploy to keep Joe quiet, to make sure he had to keep him close so he doesn't say the wrong thing. But I digress.
00:18:04
Speaker
Joe said in the episode that he didn't have as good of a relationship with Josh after the molestations occurred, but they rebuilt their bond over time. He says, quote, Whenever somebody is, you know, somebody respect the most is willing to get up and proclaim, you know, what we believe as Christians about being true to your wife, you never would expect that person to be the one that's involved in it. And it broke my heart.
00:18:27
Speaker
So interestingly, this episode includes party scene for Jill and Derek as they are moving to Central America to work as missionaries. I was surprised to see Kendra in that scene.
00:18:38
Speaker
She would have been about 17 years old at the time. She was standing with Ginger in a couple of shots over kind of with her as people were giving speeches and praying. I am, to be fair, like 90% sure it's her. But if it was her, she knew what had been going on with Josh and how it impacted the family before she and Joe even started courting. So that's where we are now. Information is coming pretty quickly and changing a lot.
00:19:04
Speaker
but I will continue to be following for any developments. Thank you for listening. Again, apologies if my audio is not great. I am in a little study room, literally hiding under my sweater like it's a blanket.
00:19:17
Speaker
So I'm doing my best. Next week will be better. And we will talk again soon. Thanks, everyone.
