Introduction to Laughing with Gingers

00:00:48
Speaker
Bye. Bye. This is our podcast song. It isn't very long. Hi, Sarah. Hi, Christina. Everyone. Thank you for tuning into Laughing with Ginger's.
00:01:04
Speaker
The podcast where two feisty redheads with loud laughs share crazy stories, play games, and spread silliness and joy.
00:01:12
Speaker
That star-spangled voice you hear over there is my partner in crime on the Laughing with Ginger's podcast, Christina Curry. And that is Sarah Allefin, my, well, AK prankster monk and my co-host of Laughing with Ginger's. Get ready to laugh because today we are doing part two of, what did we call it, marketing fails or something like social media influencer fails.

Listener Marketing Fail Submissions

00:01:39
Speaker
Oh yeah, minor marketing fails. Oh my God. I brought some funny stuff. I think we got some submissions maybe potentially that came through.
00:01:53
Speaker
I'm giggling, looking over what I'm going to be sharing today already. Yeah, I got two submissions that I am sharing to round out our little episode today. You defeated me last week. That sounds right. No, it doesn't.
00:02:20
Speaker
This week I have my warrior pants on, so let's get into it. Yeah.

Social Media Marketing Mishaps

00:02:28
Speaker
All right. I can kick us off. I can kick us off with a couple of social media influencer fails. All right. Let's do it.
00:02:37
Speaker
Okay, so when British pop group Little Mix, don't know who they are, promoted their branded perfume on their Instagram account. They forgot one tiny detail. So here's what happened. Their perfume was on the side of a taxi. So they post a picture of their perfume brand on the side of the taxi. And then there's a picture.
00:03:00
Speaker
of them and they post it and the copy that they posted, they clearly had it written for them by probably the marketing department and someone, maybe not even them, posted
00:03:16
Speaker
How's this copy, Jade? So surreal. We're on the side of a taxi, all kinds of emojis. Who's got their bottle? Let us know what you think. Launch event tomorrow, emoji, emoji, emoji. Yeah, so they're acting like, whoa, look, we're on the side of a taxi. But like, how's this copy, Jade? I don't even know if Jade is like a member of the group.
00:03:46
Speaker
That's embarrassing. Oh, man. And that feels like something I totally could see someone who's never done any sort of actual marketing training. I mean, you need to before you hit send, you know, look over those things.
00:04:05
Speaker
Anyway, there's another one like this, super cringy. So unfortunately, Little Mix isn't the only ones that have made this kind of mistake. So Scott Disick, he's the one of the Kardashians, like ex-husband, partnered up with Booty Shake, B-O-O-T-E-A Shake.
00:04:32
Speaker
and they collaborated and he posted or you know someone posted on his team here you go at 4 p.m eastern right the below and then there's a space it says caption colon keeping up with the summer workout routine with my morning booty protein shake oh it's really awkward the second year an embarrassment
00:04:59
Speaker
I know. And all the comments are like the caption or obviously you're being paid for this or no fucks given. And does Scott even drink this as bad? I wonder if you posted at 4 p.m. I wonder that it was an advertisement. I know. I mean, legally, they're supposed to call that out.
00:05:27
Speaker
Yeah. Like bylaws. All right. Are you ready for my

Humorous Advertising Taglines

00:05:34
Speaker
first one? Which I hope I didn't say last time. There's no way to know. But you all can tell us later. All right. Here it is. This is the sign. After dinner, comma, you can stab your date. Is this A, a kebab restaurant? B,
00:05:57
Speaker
a weird Craigslist ad or see a new dating app. Oh, my God. I really hope it's not a dating app. That would be like there would be nothing but men in it. All the women women would be like, no.
00:06:20
Speaker
I mean, I would hope maybe not. Maybe there's women into it. What do I know? Oh, what is it? I think. What was the second one again? A Craigslist ad. I mean, yikes. That. Oh, God, I'm going to go with kabob. Ding, ding, ding. Oh, my God.
00:06:47
Speaker
It is a Versa kebab and on the sign they have the kebab, like the Adonis kebabs skewers, the metal ones. Yeah. I am curious if they mean like date dates, like as in like the fruit date. I would hope so. But I think they actually like meant it to be funny.
00:07:14
Speaker
I think they missed the mark. Everything about it is aqua taco. All right, here is the next one. OK. Something for every hole. Is it A, earrings? Is it B, drain covers? Or is it C, something you'd find at a sex shop?
00:07:46
Speaker
I mean, see, yes, there is something for every hole. I don't know if that's the answer, though. The statement can be true without it being the advertisement for that. I know. That's what I'm saying. I feel like there's more than one right answer.
00:08:13
Speaker
Oh, man, I feel like I mean, you're in the drain business. How boring is that? And you've got to disrupt the market. I feel like that's a great tagline to disrupt the market. Is that your final answer? Yeah, that's my final answer. I think drain covers should consider this as being their advertisement, but it is actually earrings.
00:08:40
Speaker
Damn, they should, they really should. It's somebody that has, so the woman, the person that's like on it, because all you see is just the ear, although it looks feminine and there's reason I said that, but that's neither here nor there.
00:09:00
Speaker
It's like five holes in the ear, four holes in the ear. They're all different earrings and there's something for every hole. Oh my gosh. It's funny but a little cringy.
00:09:22
Speaker
It's also a little weird because like the it's like the ear hole is there. The whole like everything about it is a little like. But we're poking holes in this. All right. What have you got for me? OK, I have a funny like collaboration.

Awkward Celebrity Endorsements

00:09:47
Speaker
that seems like it would probably work, but kind of didn't work. So Snoop Dogg collaborated with the Hot Pockets, which are microwavable snacks that I used to eat. They're very delicious.
00:10:06
Speaker
And then they were doing a commercial with his song, Drop It Like It's Hot, Drop It Like It's Hot. And they filmed the commercial with Snoop Dogg singing, dancing women in tiny shorts. The Hot Pocket was dressed as a pimp. And they changed the lyrics to Pocket Like It's Hot, Pocket Like It's Hot. Oh my god. I remember. I feel like they could have stuck with Drop It Like It's Hot because those things are like lava.
00:10:38
Speaker
Have you ever been to anyone? Yeah. As soon as you said Hot Pocket, all I could think of was the top of my mouth being burnt. Yep. Yep. You get so impatient, you just eat it right away and it lights you on fire. Yeah. Yeah. It sears into your palate so that you can then no longer taste anything after that.
00:11:02
Speaker
Mm hmm. Yeah. Yeah. But you still keep eating it. I remember him doing that collaboration. I don't remember them dressing the hot pocket up, but that doesn't.
00:11:15
Speaker
That doesn't mean it didn't happen. I just remember this song happening and like dancing. Oh my God. Yeah. It seems like a stretch of a connection, but you know, I've seen worse. True.
00:11:34
Speaker
Oh, man. All right. So there's a brand of condoms called Strapped Condoms, and they tend to lean and target African-American communities. And they have a bunch of campaigns around like HIV awareness. Well, this is STDs, but it's STIs now, the kids call it.
00:11:58
Speaker
And they decided to partner with rapper Lil Wayne. And also, at the same time, focus on another important issue, which is racist police violence. So the ad. That's a choice.
00:12:20
Speaker
It's a choice. So their tagline is, go down strapped. And they have a picture of a cop, like a white cop, and his hand is on Lil Wayne's shoulder and pushing Lil Wayne on top of a car hood. And Lil Wayne is like, ugh, you know, like, oh, good. And it looks like the cop is giving it to him from behind.
00:12:48
Speaker
With the tagline, go downstream. That is exactly what I was about to ask you. I don't think they intended it to be that way, but it's that way. Why? I mean, who?
00:13:10
Speaker
At what point did no one, it's pretty obvious. Why did this get okayed on so many levels and then put out there? It literally looks like they're engaging in sex.
00:13:27
Speaker
Oh, no. Yeah, yeah, it's awkward. It's awkward, strapped condoms. Come on. Oh, my God, that's horrifying. Yeah, I think it's a fail. I think it's a yeah, influencer fail. It's definitely an influencer fail.

Controversial and Sexist Ads

00:13:48
Speaker
OK, my next one is she's more into ceilings than Michelangelo.
00:13:56
Speaker
You're not popular. You're easy. Oh. The first step on your walk of shame. OK, is it a these are three different billboards, by the way. OK. Yeah, but they're all for the same thing. Yes, yes. So is it a man magazine? Be a soda company or
00:14:25
Speaker
C, wait, did I just say C twice? B, a soda company. Or C, a bully prevention website. Oh man. Oh man. I feel, Mad Magazine, I feel like would, but wait, do they advertise on billboards? I don't know.
00:14:49
Speaker
That's a good question. I'm like, I don't think I've ever seen them advertised at all. Are they even a thing? I don't even know. Like, are they just online now or are they not even obsolete now? Okay. What was B and C again? Mad magazine, A, B, soda company, or C, a bully prevention website.
00:15:16
Speaker
OK, and I need the billboards again. OK, she's more into ceilings than Michelangelo. You're not popular, you're easy. And then the third one is your first step on your walk of shame. Man, I kind of keep leaning towards the magazine. I think it's Mad Magazine. Is that your final answer? That's my final answer.
00:15:45
Speaker
It is B, a soda company. It is for Sprite and Sprite Zero. What? I thought there's no way a large soda company is going to say those things on a billboard. The hashtag is brutally refreshing. Oh my gosh. Wow. Wow.
00:16:11
Speaker
Wow. Yeah, it's brutal. I don't know about refreshing. Jesus, it's a little harsh. And very, very sexist. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's why it was like, it's gotta be the Mad Magazine. That's why it made me think of Mad Magazine.
00:16:34
Speaker
All right. You want my final one? And then we have the two that were submitted by listeners. OK. Yeah. Yeah. Let's hear your final one. All right. The more you play with it, the harder it gets. Is it A, a gaming system? B, silly putty? Or C, something you'd find at a sex shop?
00:17:02
Speaker
Oh man, I feel like there's a riddle like this. The more you play with it, the harder it gets or whatever. I'm gonna say, I feel like it's gotta be like a video game. That's a good ad for a video game, I feel like. Is that your final answer? That's my final answer. Ding, ding, ding. Yes, yay. Pulling back ahead.
00:17:31
Speaker
So here's the full thing. First of all, it is a joystick that you're seeing from above. And the hand gesture looks like this. Like the OK sign. Kind of. More like a. I'm going to masturbate. Yep, it looks like you're looking down at someone's lap. Oh, wow. It says the more you play with it, the harder you get. And then it says you sit there.
00:17:59
Speaker
eyes glued to the writhing arcade quality graphics, pulling and squeezing your knob. Now you're breathing heavily over the digital stereo sound. Now you're shooting all over the place, but it's no use. Game over. Scandalous. I'm not done yet. To be this good takes ages. To be this good takes
00:18:29
Speaker
Sega. They went for it full throttle. Full throttle. All right. I commend. I commend them. And ages is Sega is ages backward, which is why they did that. Oh, I see. I see. OK. I would not have picked up on that.
00:18:59
Speaker
Yeah, it is kind of funny that it like to be this good takes ages makes you think that there's a partner involved, but there's clearly no partner involved in the rest of the advertisements. There's a slight disconnect, but they did really go for it. They swung for the fences and they hit it. Yeah, some good writing right there. That was in a newspaper.
00:19:23
Speaker
Yeah, I was good. I was good. I was good. You want to give me your last two and then I'll give you my last two. Let's see if I can defeat you. I'm going to need both of them. All right. Perfect.

Misleading Influencer Campaigns

00:19:35
Speaker
So we have this influencer and this instance took place in Egypt where the they they enlisted I guess the brand who are we who are we? I don't know.
00:19:53
Speaker
It's a type of phone. So this happened in Egypt. I can't pronounce it. Huawei Huawei. Seems like it could have been an easy Google, but you went for it yourself, huh? I did not prepare.
00:20:09
Speaker
It's one brand for this episode. Yeah, it really is. Anyway, so this brand of phone enlisted an influencer named Sarah. It's funny, but with an H. Yeah, that's where they went wrong. Yeah, that's where they went wrong. Don't ever judge this with an H.
00:20:31
Speaker
So she's the face of an ad promoting their newest Nova 3 phone. So the ad shows her and her co-actor taking selfies with the phone and like, you know, ha ha ha, blah, blah, blah. This is so fun. But Sarah released behind the scene photos, which revealed that the selfie was actually taken by a professional DSLR camera.
00:20:55
Speaker
and not the actual phone. And within 24 hours, she had to take all the promotion promotional stuff down. But it was too late and the pictures already out there and it already got shared and the internet doesn't forget. Nope. You know, Olivia Rodrigo, like that campaign that Apple did with her and like there were a couple other
00:21:23
Speaker
celebrities who did this campaign where it was like this video was shot on an iPhone. It was fully lensed up and geared up, which is just to me still false advertising. While it was shot technically with an iPhone, it is not shot with an iPhone that anyone else could have ever set up. It was customized as well, I believe.
00:21:54
Speaker
If you are interested in this, I believe it's the Verge has a podcast episode about it. So you all should go over and listen to that if you would like the accurate statements surrounding.
00:22:05
Speaker
False advertising. Instead of laughing with gingers from memories. Hey, it's just valid. No, it's not. No, they did like all the research and everything. And I didn't do my own research. I pulled from their research and actually looked into it. It was interesting to me as a photographer. But anyway, I did. Yeah. Asterix don't believe anything we say on this show.
00:22:32
Speaker
Do not use this as your only form of research. Don't go around telling people that you read this somewhere because that Don't use us as research at all. I'm just gonna blanket statement even the things that we read that sound like facts could in fact not be a fact. We are not we are not Marcus Parks from last podcast network.
00:22:58
Speaker
No, we're no one that does thorough research. If I know anything about us, it's that we do not do thorough research. We are here for the fun and the facts, but our facts are... If you want to know if our facts are firm, then just think about if you poke a jello molds with a stapler inside. There's no fun in the word research.
00:23:29
Speaker
Uh, you want to give us your final? Yeah. Final one. Final fail.

Influencer Entitlement and Reactions

00:23:35
Speaker
Okay. There's a YouTube influencer named Elle Darby and she attempted to pay for a five-night stay at this luxurious white moose cafe in Dublin by promising social media exposure for the hotel. I roll. Darby wrote to the owner, Paul Stenson,
00:23:55
Speaker
As I was searching for places to stay, I came across your stunning hotel and would love to feature you in my YouTube videos and dedicate Instagram stories and posts to bring traffic to your hotel and recommend others to book up in return for free accommodation.
00:24:11
Speaker
Having none of it, Stenson replied, if I let you stay here and return for a feature in a video, who's going to pay the staff who look after you? Who's going to pay the housekeeper who has to clean your room, the waiters who have to serve you breakfast, the receptionist who has to check you in, and who's going to pay for the light and heat that you use during your stay? Stenson ended his email replying to Darby stating, PS, the answer is no, and subsequently banned all social media influencers from his hotel.
00:24:39
Speaker
She's literally in the video crying, showing the email that she got back from the guy. Oh my God. Crying like her eyes are all red and she's like sad about it. I mean, I guess it's embarrassing ish, but like, I mean, just don't show that he wrote you back like that because that it is embarrassing for you.
00:25:05
Speaker
I think it's more embarrassing that she swung for that. That's such an awkward, I don't know. That's one of my least favorite things. I recently watched somebody on TikTok who is a designer and one of the influencers reached out on social media and was like, hey, I'm going to New York Fashion Week. I would love to wear you.
00:25:31
Speaker
if you would, I will compensate you for dressing me with photos and social media stuff." And then she wrote back and she was like, I honestly don't usually even bother to write back because I don't open the requests folder very often, but I felt bad. She seemed sweet and blah, blah, blah. And then she was like,
00:25:51
Speaker
Unfortunately, we don't do that kind of influencer marketing, but have a great time. I'm sure you will really enjoy it and I look forward to seeing your content in the future. The influencer never responded and then went to New York Fashion Week, took all of these photos and then kept just sent them hundreds of photos to that person and was like,
00:26:15
Speaker
Your thing could have been in this. Your things could have been in this. Your products could have been in this. And I was like, you took a lot of time to try to shame this person who is not ashamed. Like you're not making the flex you think you're making. No, influencers, but that's bad behavior. Yeah. And the person responded in a nice way back to you. And now you're like throwing shade their way. Not cool. Unsolicited rudeness.
00:26:45
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. All right.

Suggestive Real Estate Advertising

00:26:49
Speaker
Are you ready for my two users submit or listeners submitted billboards? Okay. Let's hear it. This one says sleep with your wife. Is it okay? I could have gone, I should have gone so much, so much wider in this. Um, I could have given you at least five answers, but here we go. A a mattress company B
00:27:15
Speaker
an airline booking site or see a snoring prevention mechanism for me? I don't know what to call it. Sleep apnea machine or something. One of those things that goes like this on your nose that makes you not. Oh, like a note. Yeah, like a, I don't know what they're called either. What are those called?
00:27:43
Speaker
Like what was the general term? I don't want to quote the brand. I don't know what you would call the general term, but I don't want to credit the brand until you make your guess. I know it's like when I was like Kleenex where we just say Kleenex instead of tissue. I know.
00:28:01
Speaker
Okay. Yeah, it's either a mattress or the nose thing. And I feel like mattresses are boring. I could see them getting a little more creative with their marketing. I'm going to go with mattresses. Damn it. It's an airline booking site. What? Sleep with your wife. Same day return flights from all metro areas.
00:28:31
Speaker
What? That seems a little like out there. OK. Yeah, that's a little weird. Um, here's my last one and we are neck and neck. So you have to get this one to defeat me. Are you ready? OK. OK. OK. Do it on the office table, couch or on your bed. Is it?
00:29:01
Speaker
A real estate site, a local library, or a sexy time situation? Sexy time situation. Is that your final answer? I mean, yes.
00:29:26
Speaker
It is a real estate site. How does that even work out? I don't understand that. It says, do it on the office table, couch, or on your bed. Book your home from anywhere. It is for India's largest real estate platform.
00:29:47
Speaker
Oh, I see. They're saying like you're on your computer phone. You can do it. OK, OK, I get it. I was like that feels a little disconnected. All right. You lost. I mean, you you did so great. I you gave me my crush.
00:30:10
Speaker
Yeah. I think you get four sprites or you're... We'll go with kombucha's for you because that's your preferred... If it's going to fizz, that's your preferred fizzing drink. Oh, good. That's... Yeah. Sprite and refreshing... What was that? Technically refreshing to be honest. Refreshing is brutal.
00:30:37
Speaker
