00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.

Defining a Solarpreneur

00:00:31

Key Relationships in Solar Sales Leadership

00:00:42
Speaker
we're going to go over the three essential relationships that you must have as a leader and really just up level as a sales rep, whatever position you are at in solar. So welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referral, and have a much better time in the solar industry. Hope you're kicking 2026 off with a bang or whenever you're listening this hope you're having a lot of success. This is the year that we make massive gains in solar 2025 was a little bit up and down had some crazy stuff happen but I'm feeling great about 2026 hopefully y'all are as well and so this podcast gotta give credit where credit's due we had a leadership training
00:01:24
Speaker
at our company and um thought it's really cool. we We created at our company a group called DNA. If you are a leader, I think this is something that you can go and replicate in your company you know with your future leaders. Basically what it is is we take all the ah upcoming leaders that maybe and they're not running huge teams yet, but kind of like the up and comers,
00:01:44
Speaker
And we get them together, pour into them. So it's a day where we went and just ah heard from other top leaders in our organization. and then we took like a party bus, went to a Lakers game down in LA.
00:01:58
Speaker
and it was a good time. And it just made us feel, all us upcoming leaders made us feel appreciated. Just really ah poured into and got us inspired for the quarter and for the year.
00:02:10
Speaker
And so if you are running a team or maybe you're running a bigger region, whatever position, this is something you can do even on a small scale, just pour in into your leaders. hey Maybe you have two or three up and comers on your team that are going to be your future leaders. You can go out and do something like this on a smaller scale. So the podcast today, it's based a training that one of our regionals gave one of our directors, um Jake Ransom

Leadership Lessons from Biblical Figures

00:02:36
Speaker
is his name. We've done a podcast with him, but super inspiring leader. So go listen to that podcast. We'll link to it. Go check it out if you've not heard it. But got to give credit to Jake. He gave this training on just the three relationships that we need to have as leaders. And that's really every person should have in their lives. And it was really cool because ah he based it on some biblical figures.
00:02:57
Speaker
It wasn't like a sermon, but, um you know, Bible is like the first self-development book. So there's some great leadership principles, great things you can learn in the Bible, just really about anything, especially about self-development. So the three relationships and three people that he based these qualities on, i guess relationships on, are Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy.
00:03:19
Speaker
going to look at some of my notes a little bit as I'm going through this. ah But they're figures from the Bible and each of them had kind of a specific role. he used these examples to really illustrate how we can be better leaders and be more fulfilled in our solar career. I'm going go through each one of these and whether you're leading or not leading, these are things that you should be trying to find in your solar career and it's going to help you in whatever position you're in it right now. Okay, so I'm going go through one by one. I'll give kind of the biblical context of each person, just so you know how it relates. You know, we'll get into how we can apply it in our solar careers. So the first one is Paul, okay, and this relationship was a mentor role, okay, and so I'm no Bible guru, okay, I don't know the Bible, inside and out read it, but, um you know, don't pop quiz me on the Bible. So I did some ah AI research on Paul and why he's ah kind of a mentor figure. So going read some of the AI research I did. it said the Apostles Paul was a central figure in early Christianity, known for a strong leadership, teaching and mentorship. He was ahead in wisdom, leadership and perspective and frequently challenged and corrected individuals and churches to guide them in their faith and practice. His letters, such as those to the Corinthians or Galatians, exemplify his role in providing direct, sometimes stern correction, not coddling, but always with the aim of growth and development.
00:04:42
Speaker
He mentored many, most notably Timothy, demonstrating the role of a leader who can mentor you and challenge you. Paul, if you didn't get that, he was the mentor figure. hey And so this is the first thing that we need.
00:04:54
Speaker
To be better people and to be better leaders, we need a mentor. If you don't have a mentor already, this is something you can think about for the new year. Who can be your mentor? Hey, i'm hopefully you're at a company that has lots of resources or wherever you're at. Hopefully you're surrounded by people that you feel can be men mentors to you. But if not, consider joining you know, a mastermind group, consider getting coaching. Hey, we have a few spots available for coaching. If you do want apply for our coaching and mentorship program here at Solopreneur, we have the link down for that, where you can also join one of our blitzes.
00:05:29
Speaker
And not to toot our own horn too much, but um you need a mentor to really see the blind spots you have in your so solar career and see how you can up level. And listening to this podcast is a small example of getting mentorship, but even better, do you have someone that is coaching? you Do you have someone that's holding you accountable? These are all things that mentors do.
00:05:49
Speaker
So this is what was the first... example and first person that we went through in our training, just finding a mentor in our lives and in in our solar careers. If we do that, then that's how we can, like I said, see blind spots. They can make us uncomfortable and it's crucial for growth. They're going us see things that we don't always see. And that's one of the first breakthroughs I had in solar was and when I had a solid mentor and coach. Okay. So if you, especially if you have not had breakthroughs in solar, you probably are needing a mentor.
00:06:20
Speaker
Okay, so let's go through the

Role of Mentorship and Peer Support

00:06:21
Speaker
second one. The second figure in the Bible is Barnabas. And Barnabas, a little bit on his background, says Barnabas, whose name means sons of encourage son of encouragement, was an early Christian leader who exemplified peer support. He was known for his encouraging nature and for walking alongside others. For instance, he introduced Paul to the apostles when others were suspicious of him. and accompany Paul on his first missionary journey acting as a peer, someone alongside you. His willingness to give John Mark a second chance after he left them earlier also highlights the accountability with empathy characteristic of this relationship. Okay, so number two, Barnabas is peers. You need solid peers around you.
00:07:02
Speaker
And again, hopefully you're in an organization where you do have a lot of solid peers. yeah I'm fortunate and down here to be surrounded by so many solid peers, so many great people, a lot of people that are similar levels as me that have similar teams are trying to build.
00:07:16
Speaker
And so it makes for great you know camaraderie, you know growth that way. So um again, if you are at if you're at a place where maybe there's not great peers around you,
00:07:26
Speaker
You've heard me say it in the podcasts, and one of the great self-development principles is that you're the average of the five people you surround yourself with. So this is the power of peers. If you surround yourself with killers, with people that are getting out there, people that are making money, people that are having success not only in their finances and sales career, but also in relationships, their family life, their spiritual life, that is, I believe, the best way that you're going to up-level and grow. So if you don't have that around you, then... Again, you may need to consider joining Mastermind Group, just getting around people that have those similar goals and similar things that you're striving for. Or maybe you do need to look for a different organization to join where you do have better peers around you. hey Because if you do that, it's only going to make it...
00:08:12
Speaker
that much easier to up level yourself, that much easier to be accountable to other people. And what what I like best is if you have peers that are in similar positions as you, you have someone to compete with. Hey, some of my best months are when I look for someone that's maybe just ahead of me, one of my peers that's just a cell or two ahead of me. At ah my company, there's this guy named Kyle, who he's always just like a cell or two ahead of me. And it gives me someone to gun for.
00:08:37
Speaker
You know, we keep it lighthearted. We compete with each other. It's great to have that camaraderie and have peers that you can um ask for help and then also just pick someone to to gun for. Hey, so that's number two. And then the third one is ah Timothy. Okay. And then reading a little background on Timothy here. Timothy was a young disciple whom Paul mentored extensively, referring to him as his true son in the faith.
00:09:01
Speaker
Paul invested heavily in Timothy, teaching him, sending him on missions and entrusting him with significant responsibilities in the early church. Paul's letters to Timothy are filled with guidance on leadership, doctrine and personal conduct, illustrating how Paul was pouring into and intentionally developing, preparing and sending Timothy, who in turn reflected Paul's leadership.
00:09:21
Speaker
So number three, Timothy roll is you need, so you need a mentee. You need someone that you're mentoring. Hey, and so many examples of why this is a good thing to have. um you know, one of, one of the first great examples I heard of this was, uh, my friend, Michael O'Donnell, one of the top guys in solar. He talked about how one of the things that helped him the most, especially in his ah early solar career is he would literally pay people to meet him at a Starbucks and to go out and train with him.
00:09:51
Speaker
okay You think pay people, why would he pay people? He just wanted, he needed that level accountability and he needed someone to lead to feel like he was responsible for. So he got out there himself and then it helped him push towards his numbers and his goals. And when he said he was going to meet someone out in the area, yeah he can he can't go back from that.
00:10:11
Speaker
right So maybe that's what you're needing is you're needing someone to mentor. Hey, maybe you already have a mentor, maybe you got great peers. But this is the third aspect that a lot of people, I think, overlook. And another thing it helps you do is if you can teach a skill to someone, and if you can duplicate skills to someone else,
00:10:32
Speaker
That's how you're going up level as a leader. That's how people grow massive organizations. That's how people grow massive teams and have big grip breakthroughs is if they can duplicate it, create blueprints, create systems, then ah the sky's the limit for the growth for their growth. Hey, ah Grant Cardone always says, you don't know so you don't know a skill until you can teach it to someone else.
00:10:54
Speaker
So that's why it's so important to have someone you're mentoring, so important to have a mentee that you can teach so teach the skill of sales to the art of selling. That's going to help you know if you really have it figured out yourself, it's going to hold you much more accountable because you have someone that you're reporting to. Okay, so I hope this sheds some light on maybe some things that are missing. from your career, maybe some ingredients that you didn't have that could have been holding you back from hitting some goals. So this year, I want you to really think about, do you have your Barnabas?
00:11:26
Speaker
Do you have, looking back on the notes, because, you know, I get the apostles mixed up and all that. But do you have your Paul? Do you have your Timothy? Are you being mentored? Are you mentoring someone else? And do you have great peers around you? Because if you have those three those three ingredients, promise you it will be so much easier to have success in solar.
00:11:46
Speaker
You will up level as a leader more than you ever have before. and you will have more breakthroughs than you've ever had before. So I hope this helps. Send this to someone that maybe needs to have that breakthrough in their leadership career, needs to have that breakthrough in their sales. This could be exactly what they're missing. And speaking of breakthroughs,
00:12:05
Speaker
you're not gonna wanna miss the next podcast. We have someone that's one of my great friends, Alex Smith. He is the founder and CEO of a Spartan Solar. 00:13:07
Speaker
It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood. It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too.
00:13:21
Speaker
I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:13:32
