Taylor's Journey to Success

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong. I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur you might ask? solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.

Event Planning and Personal Priorities

00:00:41
Speaker
Hey, what's happening, solopreneurs? We're going to be doing a 2026 Door-to-DoorCon preview today. This is actually the first year, maybe ever, that I'm not attending.
00:00:52
Speaker
So you're going to hear why But we're going to bring you the heat and I'm going to show you exactly what you should be going to if you were at Door-to-DoorCon this year. So welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals and have a much better time in the solar industry. Coming out late from a few appointments, I'm recording this actually the evening before Door to DoorCon starts. So if you're listening to this the day it releases, then you're probably already at Door to DoorCon. So hopefully we can get this out to you so you know exactly where you should be going, speakers you should be looking for at the conference. Hey, and ah before I get into why I'm not going this year, Door to Door Con, it's a it's a great event. And if you haven't heard, they actually are not doing a Solar Con this year.
00:01:41
Speaker
Sadly, yep, we're sad about it. Solar Con was a great event, but they're not doing it this year. So i was I was sad that I'm not able to make it to DoorDorCon this year. I'm not going to be able to hang out with y'all at SolarCon.
00:01:56
Speaker
So maybe we'll just create our own events. But the reason I couldn't go this year was because my wife, she planned a trip about three, four months ago.
00:02:07
Speaker
And it was with, you know, like some of my sisters and my mom there New York City right now. I got stuck here watching kids in California. Not a crazy reason.
00:02:18
Speaker
Nothing then too crazy. But we just couldn't make it work this year. And life happens. It was just too hectic to find people to watch them. Even if I flew them out to Utah, I didn't know what we're going to do with them there. So I'm just like, all right, guess it's time to sit one out. Guess the universe is telling me to sit this one out. And I couldn't make it work. She planned the trip like four months ago, didn't look at

Door-to-DoorCon Highlights and Tips

00:02:38
Speaker
the dates. So my fault for not planning better. So those that are at Door to DoorCon this year, um looks like it's going to be a great event.
00:02:47
Speaker
And looks like there are a lot of speakers that should bring some serious nuggets. So I'm going to go through the agenda and I'm going to tell you what I would go to if I were there. And just give you some observations, some things I've noticed i've noticed from going to Door to DoorCon for...
00:03:03
Speaker
I think, what, five, six years now. So hopefully it'll help if you're there. And hopefully if you're not there, you can have some things to look forward to in the future. Maybe you go to future events, you can see some of these same people.
00:03:13
Speaker
So I'm going to pull up the agenda myself. I don't think we have a screen share feature on here. But if you go to DoorCon's page, you'll see the agenda. okay so they had the vip day thursday i think thursday is just kind of the sports day they had basketball all that stuff it's like a social if you're listening to this now you probably are at the you already went to the social but um it was cool my buddy jeremy rose i know he had a big part in this social it's the uh rea and so great organization support if you haven't checked out rea residential
00:03:49
Speaker
Shoot, I'm blanking on what it stands for. REA, they're just people that are helping with like, you know, the regulation stuff for solar. They're doing some great things over there. So go check out Jeremy Rose's podcast. If you haven't listened to it already, we will link to it. Okay, but there are ones putting on the social. So looks like a great time at that.
00:04:06
Speaker
Hey, but um I know everyone wants the workshops in the main speakers. So I'm going to go through just some of the highlights, the people I would go, some of the ones that I probably wouldn't go if I were there. And ah yeah, we'll check it out here together. Okay, so the event, it starts at 9 a.m. m on the main stage.
00:04:29
Speaker
Okay, and you've got um some Golden Door Awards, Hall of Fame, got some keynotes, you know, Sam speaking at 1015. Sam's always a great speaker.
00:04:40
Speaker
Got a hand to the guy. He's gotten better and better over the years at speaking, and I know he's had speaking coaches help him out a lot. I know he's guys that have helped him sell from stage better. He does have a program that he will offer you at the events. okay So if you don't want to be pitched on his program, then probably don't go to his main keynote speech the last because that's when he's pitching his program. okay it's It's a great program. I've done it before. But the other one, Ryan Pineda, haven't followed him a ton, to be honest, but I know he does a lot in real estate and he's a big influencer.
00:05:15
Speaker
So he's someone I would definitely go check out, or Ryan Pineda. um Then if the other two, haven't followed them as much. Okay, but let's get into some of the workshops. These are ones where it's always a tough decision for me because there's so many great workshops going on at the same time. And I think they they do that on purpose just because they want you coming back and they don't want you seeing all the...
00:05:36
Speaker
all the people at the same time. Starting off at two o'clock is when the first workshops starts. okay And I assume people listening to this are in solar. So I'm going to give you kind of the solar perspective, what I would go to being someone in solar. Starting off at two, man, this would be a tough decision. He got Jordan Bastion talking about solar and battery cells. Really, before you go to these events, you got to think what's the goal for you.
00:06:01
Speaker
And that's something I would recommend to people going to any events is go with a goal in mind. Because if you have a goal in mind of what you want to get out it gotta get out of it, it's a lot easier to choose. The workshops are going to go go to. It's a lot easier to choose if you want to spend more time networking.
00:06:17
Speaker
Hey, maybe your goal is just to get to know more people in the industry. Maybe i have a specific specific goal with networking. So for you, it's like you probably should skip a lot of these workshops and just be spending time talking to people in the exhibits and networking, which is always a great thing. Sometimes I've gotten more value just from the networking, the people I've met.

Innovations and Resources for Solarpreneurs

00:06:36
Speaker
at these events than any workshop I could go to. So consider that. What is your goal? What is your purpose in going to the events? Okay. But um if you do want to get some good things and but out of it, um I probably recommend for me, I'm a big fan of same day closing. i'm always looking for that. So I would probably gravitate towards room B, the same day closing mastery by a Dan Walrock. I don't know him, but It looks like a good one. Another one that's kind of intriguing. This is something I've been diving into and I've shared some of it here on the podcast, but maximizing luxury travel on credit card points.
00:07:09
Speaker
That's kind of cool, actually. Something I've been um digging into a little bit and actually doing right now, planning our anniversary trip using our credit card points. So it's kind of ah kind of a fun topic.
00:07:22
Speaker
Getting also have general sales panel. Always good. So a lot of a lot of good workshops here. You can't go wrong with any of them on ah that first hour. Get a second one at three o'clock. um This one, this one is probably a little bit easier decision for me. um I personally would probably go to Sam Taggart's ultimate 2026 scaling strategy. And again, this is where you got to think, are you a rep? or are you a ah business owner? Okay, by scaling, he's probably talking about more business owners, so or maybe managers. So depending on your goals, maybe that one isn't as much. Another one is using social media to recruit. That one could be great. Maybe you you don't have a massive team yet. Maybe you're not scaling the business. Maybe you're not like a business owner. So I would pick between those two. Sam Taggart or Adam Allred at three o'clock. And for BOK4 or BOK3, rather, you got a bunch of good ones. But man, you can't go wrong with the solar golden door panel. I mean, yeah, if you're in solar, you should be going to this one. We got my buddy, Jeremy Rose being the emcee.
00:08:30
Speaker
We got Kayla Mooney, Troy... de I always butcher his last name, but Troy, Suley, Justin, and just some killers on there.
00:08:41
Speaker
I've had most of them on the podcast. um So yeah, I would personally go to this Golden Door panel. I mean, yeah, who doesn't want to be a Solar Golden Door a Award winner? Hey, so that's that's what I would do for it the first day. Okay, at the end of the day, they got the VIP Boktai dinner.
00:08:58
Speaker
Looks like a good good time for that. Okay, moving on We'll keep it short here. The second one is Saturday and it starts off with workshops. Okay, so the first one starts at 9.30. This is always a tough one. People go to the the dinner and stuff before a lot of people are doing stuff. And man, you go to these 9.30 a.m.
00:09:17
Speaker
panels and a lot of times they're just... Pretty empty. So feel bad for some of these speakers. But I got to give a shout out. 930. got my good friend Jens Bunnell and his new, I believe, business partner, Stratton Nielsen. I know this guy's working with them, but they have a workshop on mastering your mindset. I'm actually working with Jens. He's got a kind of like a doorto- door to door platform.
00:09:41
Speaker
managers, kind of like top producers program he's doing this year, we'll probably bring him on in the near future to talk more about this. But I'm part of his group for this year. So definitely will go support Jens. He's a master helping people change their minds, their mindsets, and just, you know, like have control over that because that's more important than I think just about anything in your sales career. If you can learn to master what's going on in your head, then everything else is going to be so much easier. 80% of the game right there. um And then moving on at 1030, lot of good ones. But ah if I had to pick on this one, probably would go again depends on your goals. But solar CEO panel, if you guys did not hear the podcast we just did with Alex Smith, man, come on, go check it out. This guy blew the top off just had so many nuggets in it. He is on the solar CEO panel.
00:10:32
Speaker
So I would listen to what these guys are doing. I mean, just incredible. what Alex has been able to do in his organization. know there's some other heavy hitters on there, but ah yeah, just hearing Alex alone, the guy is always dropping bombs. Another one you got is Shai. I think I'm saying that right. Shai Addy's he's he talks about mastering the one call close. He's a good guy. I've talked with him a little bit. So that'd be another one that would be ah good to check out. But I would recommend the Solar CEOs. And then 1130, which is the last workshop of the day.
00:11:03
Speaker
Danny Pesce going on. Danny Pesce always has some good stuff to say. i mean, the guy's a comedian. Guy will keep you on your feet. So I think he's doing something Lord of the Rings themed. I know he's looking for guys to dress up as like Lord of the Rings characters. So this guy, he'll make it entertaining. And Danny's always got some some great stuff to say.
00:11:23
Speaker
no one, very few people been doing it longer than this guy. That's probably the one I would check out at 1130. Okay. okay And then the main stage after that is, ah it's just keynotes the rest of the day.
00:11:36
Speaker
So you got Ryan Lee, Ty Bennett, Sam is speaking again. This is where I assume he'll do his ah presentation, getting people in his program. Four o'clock, you got Emmett Smith, Guy's a baller. Would love to see that. Then something interesting they did this year is they moved the Golden Door Awards.
00:11:53
Speaker
um and I'm not sure because he had it on the previous day too. so I'm not sure exactly what he's doing. But usually they just do it, I think, on the first day. And there's not typically a huge turnout. So actually like this. It looks like he's moved the Golden Door Awards to the end of the conference where...
00:12:10
Speaker
You would hope that you get a massive turnout because everyone's there to see Emmitt Smith. Then right after they go straight into the wards, which I thought is good idea. Good thing to do. So there's some highlights of the events. And, ah you know, you got the after party after. It's always good. Get your networking in. So um hope if you're there, hopefully you can take some notes. Send me your notes. Would love to see some takeaways that people get from the events. And I'm sorry I can't make. I know you're gonna miss me. I know everyone that's not there is going to be heartbroken that I'm not there this year.
00:12:39
Speaker
So hopefully it'll be the only year I ever miss at Door2DoorCon. But ah these events, they're always just inspiring to go to and connect with other people. It's like a big family reunion and you come away feeling refreshed and ready to go to work. So I hope everyone that is there can i get some awesome takeaways from it. cannot resist still doing a preview podcast. It's just kind of like an annual tradition. got to do like Door2DoorCon preview. Hey, so um hopefully this gets to someone before you're at the event. Or maybe you're listening to it on the way to the event.
00:13:11
Speaker
But enjoy it. And we've got some great content, some great guests coming for you soon on the podcast. So continue to stay tuned for those and go crush it this week if you're not at Door to Door Con. We'll see you on the next one So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego.
00:13:28
Speaker
And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage. Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout.
00:13:42
Speaker
But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:13:58
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:14:13
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up. That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
00:14:26
Speaker
Okay, back to the show. What's up, solopreneurs? Hope you enjoyed the episode. Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created it specifically for you in mind.
00:14:42
Speaker
One of the top questions I get asked on Instagram, on Facebook, by our listeners is, Taylor, where should I start? What episodes should I listen to in the podcast? You got too many podcasts, man, because now we have over 200 episodes.
00:14:57
Speaker
So what we've done, we created the top 10 most downloaded, most listened to, and i would say widely accepted, most useful podcasts that we've done here on Solrepreneur.
00:15:10
Speaker
We put them together all in one sheet so you can go, you can hit the ground running, especially if you're new, you do not want to not have this sheet. So go download it right now. It's going to be at top10.solarpreneurs.com. Again, that's top10, the number 10,.solarpreneurs.com. Don't forget the S on solarpreneurs.
00:15:32
Speaker
We will have that in the show notes. Go download it right now. And especially if you have not listened to them, go listen to them and you can re-listen to them. That's going to show you how. So go download it and we'll see you on the other side.
