Introduction to Solarpreneur Journey

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong. I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.

Defining Solopreneurship

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask? A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one. Hey, what's going on, solopreneurs? Have you ever thought about quitting solopreneurs? Or maybe you're thinking that right now. If you've ever had those thoughts go through your head, you're not alone, and we're going to teach you how to overcome them and keep pushing forward on this episode episode of the Solopreneur Podcast. So thank you for tuning My name is Taylor Armstrong, and we're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in this solar industry. And hopefully that includes not quitting when times get tough.

Why Sales Reps Quit

00:01:09
Speaker
And let me tell you, times do get tough in solar. I can't say that I haven't thought about quitting multiple times. This last year was a tough one. I saw lots of...
00:01:18
Speaker
people in my own company, in my own office. We even go to different industries. But we do have many people coming back, so you can't give up on those people. But I just was thinking about it, um about why do reps quit and what is it that we go through. so that's what we want to focus on in today's episode.

Invitation to Industry Events

00:01:37
Speaker
Before we get into the topic...
00:01:39
Speaker

If you would like to be considered to join us on the next Blitz and join a group of savages and uplevel your solar game. Fill out the link below in the comments or in the notes section and we will hop on a call and see if you're good fit. Love to have you out here in the land of milk and honey and show you what real solar is all about.
00:02:07
Speaker
Okay, so check it out. But let's jump into the topic.

Perseverance in Sales

00:02:11
Speaker
So um some of you know, I do jujitsu. Posted recently that I had a competition where I actually was able to win gold in three separate divisions. okay And there were some of them, there's just one other person. i ended up having to go down a division.
00:02:26
Speaker
and go up a division. um if you follow me, you saw me post that I dropped weight. I had to lose like 10 pounds two weeks. And then when I went to weigh in, they said, oh, your opponents in that division, they didn't make weight. So I'm like, you got to be kidding me Did all that for nothing. So I competed in the upper weight class and then the lower one, and then just an open division that included all weight classes. And um all glory to God, I ended up winning all three divisions. What some people don't know is I went through multiple years of losing to finally get this win over and over and over. I would show up these competitions. I'd win a few matches. I'd lose some. But other than i think when I was a white belt, more beginner, i had never won a competition as a blue belt, which is, you know, kind of your second division intermediate. And it's frustrating because I was so close a few times, just a few mistakes. you know, whatever it was, I would always come up a little bit short. So finally, after trying over and over and over again, doing more and more competitions, I was able to take home the gold and ah not only one gold, but three golds, triple gold in um the division. So um I say that to inspire you that if you have ever considered giving up in solar, then sometimes you just have to look at it as your personal jujitsu match or whatever sport you relate to. Okay. Yeah. I'm a jujitsu guy. But at whatever sport you relate to, um you lose over and over and over to finally get the win, right? And in this sport, we get told no over and over and over. No, no, no, no, no. no no To finally get the yes,

Learning Through Losses

00:04:04
Speaker
right? So we need to think of this as this just one step closer to achieving victory, one step closer to winning, right? And it happens so many times in ah everything you look at. There's guys, it's very rare for people to just come out and win,
00:04:18
Speaker
a um I saw another post by ah one of my guy that trains kind of like a sister gym nurse for jujitsu. He's one of the the best, the best now, the top of the world. He made a similar post, how it says I went one and two in my junior high school before winning it all. my senior year. He's talking about like the championship wrestling. Then he says, I lost my first pro grappling match in seven seconds before I came back and won that same tournament twice. I lost my first two matches on Grapple Fest. Then I came back and won the title.
00:04:51
Speaker
Went Polaris, which is a big jujitsu kind of federation. Then came back and won the title. Got silver at 80cc trials before finally winning on my fourth try. Don't give up when it gets tough.
00:05:05
Speaker
You know, post some cool photos and all that. Okay, so sorry so many jujitsu references today. But if you ever think about giving up in solar, just remember that a lot of times it's like we just got to push through to that next level. And it could be that just like that meme you see of the guy digging the silver, digging for the gold.
00:05:23
Speaker
Could be that you're right on the fringe of getting to that next customer that's going to make it a six-figure or a five-figure commission. Probably not six-figure. i don't think there's six-figure commissions in solar. You got to keep pushing through and you got to keep your head up when the going gets tough.
00:05:40
Speaker
Because it could be that the next door is going to be that breakthrough you have. Could be that you are and the door away from your breakthrough. And then a few other points to consider when things get tough is ah one is just rejection. It's building those emotional calluses, right? You think ah people that go to the gym, you know, I do deadlifts at the gym and you get these calluses on your hands, right? And the stronger, the tougher these calluses get,
00:06:09
Speaker
the easier it is to ah you know pick up the weight and do it again. In high school, I did percussion, right? And um we had these mallets. We we would ah play it with mallets on this instrument called a marimba.
00:06:23
Speaker
You put four mallets in and you'd slide you know one between two fingers to kind of do the grip right. I remember when I first picked up these mallets, the calluses we got by holding it between our fingers, it was just gnarly, right? Skin would be pilling and it was just like a pain to practice.
00:06:42
Speaker
But what happened is, as you practice more and more, you got calluses built up. And then all of a sudden I could pick up these mallets, pick up these sticks and play for hours once I built up those calluses over a month or a couple months. So same thing in cells. The more you build up those emotional calluses, the more you learn to take the rejection.
00:07:01
Speaker
The more you learn to learn from your mistakes, the more you learn to have confidence growing, growing throughout the rejection, the easier it's going to be moving forward.
00:07:13
Speaker
Right. And the other thing that winners do is they learn from their mistakes. Right. right? They watch their game film. They look for improvements they can make. So just remember that losing forces you to learn, forces you to improve. Okay, average reps, they blame leads, they blame the company, whatever. But the real winners, they're learning from their mistakes. They're breaking down game film. They're seeing what they can improve. And none of that happens without losing. So I hope whenever you're listening this, maybe you're going through some slumps. Maybe you're getting your teeth kicked in right now.
00:07:47
Speaker
I just came back from a few appointments where actually today it was raining most of the day.

Staying Positive During Challenges

00:07:52
Speaker
um i expected to be in the house with three or four appointments. Every single one of those appointments fell through.
00:07:58
Speaker
um i went to the last one. I thought I was getting in. And the guy, he said, oh, no, my credit's bad. Like, OK, well, let's see if you pass credit. And then ah he wouldn't even let me inside the house. We're all outside, literally in the rain, running this guy's credit because he told me that's that's the one reason to end gun solar. I'm like, oh, sweet. If this guy passes credit, then he's going solar. This is like his one objection to it. He passes credit.
00:08:24
Speaker
And then he's like, oh, yeah, you know what? Give me a card. um I need to talk to my wife and just comes up with more and more excuses to not look into it. And, you know, after three appointments falling through that day, i was just like not having it. I'm like, hey listen, man, I drove an hour to get here. Let's just at least look at the numbers. If you guys don't like it, that's totally fine.
00:08:44
Speaker
But the guy was just not having it, um said his wife was... eating dinner, his kids were screaming and just, you know, tried to loop it like five, six times and the guy was not having it. So that's how I ended my day. Right. And looking back, probably should went and knocked the doors, tried to get a you know, a yes on the day and with some positivity. But, um you know, I chose to go home And it was it was pretty late and raining, to be fair. But I went home, and that's how it ended, right? And so you got to look at the positives. You got to realize that not all days are going to be sunshine and rainbows.
00:09:20
Speaker
And whenever I'm going through a tough time, I love to listen to, you know, Rocky's quote. Go look up Rocky's quote to his son, ah you know, rock the Rocky movies. Just, ah you know, it's not about how many times you get back up, how many times you can take the hits and keep moving forward, something like that. Okay, just butchered the quote, but go looking up look up the YouTube video. That's what it's about in solar too.
00:09:42
Speaker
So keep pushing forward. Understand that the more no's you get, the closer the more closer you are to the yes. And I promise you, just do one more door. Get one more rejection.
00:09:54
Speaker
Take it one more day, right? Because if you do that, you're guaranteed to have success in solar. It's just about going one more time than you thought. One more time more than what you had planned. Okay, so I hope that helps someone out there today. And I hope that helps you to keep pushing forward today. or whenever you're listening to

Upcoming Guests and Tools

00:10:12
Speaker
this. Wanted to give a teaser for our next episode. We are having actually our most popular guest on the show ever. Taylor McCarthy, he is releasing his upcoming book.
00:10:23
Speaker
Hey, we're gonna he's taking pre-orders for it. So we will drop the link in the next episode. But this guy, he's going to dropping the latest and greatest coming up on the next podcast of The Solar Printer. Okay, so make sure you tune in and hope this resonated with you today. We'll see you on the next podcast. So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego. And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results.
00:10:51
Speaker
But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage. Then we discovered an app called SolarScout. But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:11:14
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:11:29
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up. That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
