Taylor's Journey and Podcast Goals

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong. went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur you might ask? solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one. Steve Maraboli once said, once your mindset changes, everything on the outside it will change along with it. Well, would you like to change everything in your life with only a few changes in your mindset? Then this episode is

Mindset and Strategy in Solar Business

00:00:55
Speaker
for you. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, help you more generate help you generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry. Today we're gonna be talking about all about mindset, why it's so important, and we're gonna be going over some strategies that can literally change your life. We're recording this at the end of 2025, going into the new year, 2026, so I wanna get your brain thinking about some changes you can make in your life
00:01:21
Speaker
to make the next year the best year you've ever had and finish off this year with a bank. Hey, so ah I'm doing this Fresh After Training a team.
00:01:32
Speaker
on um we We did a little survey for to shout out to Melissa Ramize's team. If you're listening, we did a training on mindset for their team today. And it was one of the requested topics.
00:01:45
Speaker
And I think this is something that gets neglected. We always talk about strategies. We talk about things we can say at the door. We talk about word tracks. But what's going on in the headspace? Because that more than anything else will determine your success in solar. So i want to invite you, as we get into the topic of today's show, if you have not read the book, As a Man Thinketh, one of my favorite books on personal developments. And ah this book, we're gonna go over some principles. It's super quick read. It's only like 50 pages. So go pick up a copy today and it has some really powerful principles in it. This book, it was introduced to me actually by a church leader
00:02:23
Speaker
They were talking about just the power that our thoughts have on our daily lives and ah on our actions and everything that happens. So this is something that can affect your life as much as your solar career by figuring out what's going on with your thoughts and how they affect your

Influence of Thoughts and Media Consumption

00:02:40
Speaker
actions. So I'm going to break it down to in a few different principles that are taken from this book. You can go out and apply these today.
00:02:47
Speaker
And then I would invite you to go and grab a copy of this book. And while you're at it, if you have not left us a review or a rating or a comment on ah Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, wherever you're listening to this, it would be much appreciated. It's what keeps the show going.
00:03:02
Speaker
and keeps keeps the content coming directly to your fingertips. hey And so the first principle of this book are thoughts are seeds, you harvest what you plant.
00:03:14
Speaker
So our thoughts are the seeds and we're going to harvest whatever we plant, we're going to harvest whatever seeds we're planting. So in the book, if you have it, on page six, they talk about this, he says, a man's mind may be likened to a garden,
00:03:26
Speaker
which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild, but whether cultivated or neglected, it must and will bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein and will continue to produce produce their kind. So I want you to take a moment and think...
00:03:43
Speaker
Am I cultivating weeds in my garden, in my headspace? Or am cultivating things that are positive, things that are uplifting, uplifting things that are useful? And some of you, you might take a look at your life. You might find you're consuming things that aren't good for your headspace at all.
00:03:58
Speaker
Great example this, if you go look on, you have Netflix, if you have YouTube, social media, we we have these algorithms that are programmed to tell us exactly what our brain wants more of.
00:04:09
Speaker
So this can tell you're pretty quick. If you go look at your algorithms on Instagram, on Facebook, on YouTube, what's coming out the other side? Are the algorithms coming out with positive things? um If you're trying to up level your sales ability, are you they coming out? Are your algorithms coming out with guys that are talking about sales, talking about how to improve in that?
00:04:27
Speaker
Or your algorithm's just spitting out useless stuff, useless, I don't know, TV shows, things that aren't serving you. Or worse, you know, we we live in a society flooded with, pornographically flooded with things that are negative. So is your...
00:04:43
Speaker
algorithm flooding you with that. It's going to flood with whatever you think about with with whatever you search. So if you don't know what's being planted in your garden, that's a pretty quick way to find out. Go look on Netflix, YouTube, whatever, wherever you're consuming content, it's literally going to show you what's being cultivated in your garden.
00:05:02
Speaker
that's the way you can find out. And then you can start to make changes. you don't like what's being shown to you in the algorithm, then maybe it's time to take a break from social media, take a break from whatever whatever it is. Or maybe it's time to go follow things that are more positive, that are more uplifting, that are more in line with your goals and things you want to achieve.
00:05:22
Speaker
Hey, um so yeah, great example.

Impact of Associations and Aligning Goals

00:05:24
Speaker
And I talked about this in our training that I did with Melissa Ramiza's team today is just the people you spend time around, I remember when I first started my solar career, I told this story that I was spending time with people that were a little bit of ah energy suckers, time wasters. We would go and a lot of days instead of knocking, we would be sitting in the car just chatting, watching YouTube, watching ah TV shows. We were in a Game of Thrones at that time. So we were watching like Game of Thrones content and waste a lot of hours when it could have been spent
00:05:57
Speaker
just cultivating my garden better and actually going out and hitting the turf. Okay, so another principle with that is who are you spending time around? The people that you're around, are they adding positivity to your garden upstairs, right? Are they harvesting but good seeds in your garden because going to plant what you sow? Right. so that's the first point.
00:06:18
Speaker
Then the next principle, are your goals aligning with the sacrifice you're making? hey um If you follow taylor Taylor McCarthy, mentor of mine, he's been on the podcast, but one of the favorite sayings I always got from Taylor McCarthy is next to the word success in the dictionary is the word sacrifice. So are you willing to make the sacrifice?
00:06:39
Speaker
with what you actually want to achieve. talks about this in the book as well. This by James Allen, by the way. He says, men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves.
00:06:50
Speaker
They therefore remain bound. The man who does not shrink from self-crucifixion can never fail to accomplish the object upon which his heart is set. This is as true of earthly as of heavenly things.
00:07:01
Speaker
Even the man whose sole object is to acquire wealth must be prepared to make great sacrifices, before he can accomplish his object and how much more so he who would realize a strong and well-poised life. So some of you already know that I run my own door-to-door sales team here in San Diego.
00:07:18
Speaker
And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage.
00:07:29
Speaker
Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout. But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:07:48
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country, and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to SolarScout in San Diego, so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:08:03
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them, and you'll get

00:08:16
Speaker
Okay, back to the show. Okay, this is written by a yeah like 100 years ago, so, and you know, not in the most most modern English. But then ah in the book, he goes on to give examples. A rich man who is a victim of painful and persistent disease as a result of gluttony. if you don't know what gluttony is, that's like eating a lot of food, greediness. So he says he is willing to give large sums of money to get rid of it, but he will not sacrifice his gluttonous desires.
00:08:44
Speaker
So how many people do we see that? We see people who want something, but they're not willing to give up their other life to achieve it, right? So is the pain and not having success greater and than the pain of the hard work it's going to take to get there?
00:08:57
Speaker
And if you're not at that level, if you're not at the point where the pain of not having success is greater than the other alternative, then it's gonna be tough for you to achieve achieve whatever goal you're set out your're seeking, right? If you follow Eric Thomas, he talks about, you can go watch this video on YouTube, but is the pain of having success as great as, is the desire is for success as much as the desire to breathe, to to take your next breath? He tells that story where the guy is like drowning underwater. It's the hole. I think the guy asks his mentor how he can have just success. And his mentor goes and like dunks him in the ocean.
00:09:34
Speaker
The guy says, how bad did you want your next breath? And he says, yeah, I was going to die. and he says, well, until you want success that bad, you're not going to achieve success. So very similar thing. We don't need to die, right? But how big is your desire? How big is your why? How bad do you want that success? And if you're not willing to sacrifice and do the things it takes, if you say you want to make half a million next year, but you're not willing to put in the level of effort it takes to achieve that, then maybe need to adjust your goals. For me, I've i've said in my life, oh, I want six pack abs. I want to be this level of fitness, but I don't have a six pack because my goals haven't aligned with it. okay And that's okay. and not necessarily Not necessarily a bad thing. you know I made the decision that you know I want the food rather than having a six pack. And hopefully can change that. i need to adjust some things. If I actually want to get a six pack, consider myself in decent shape, definitely not have a six pack. So it's the same thing. Maybe there's things you need to adjust and maybe you need to make that decision. Hey, I'm okay.
00:10:34
Speaker
Maybe I'm okay with making the level um of sacrifice to make three, 400,000, but maybe not half a million. okay And if you decided that, great. I think there's some people where they're sacrificing too much. Some people are sacrificing their families. They're sacrificing um you know time with people.
00:10:54
Speaker
you know, figuratively, right? They're sacrificing these things where you need to prioritize, right? There's seasons where you need to focus in on family, friends, whatever it may be, but decide the level of sacrifice you want to make to attain and the goals you set out for yourself. And that's a very important principle in this solar journey and in life.
00:11:13
Speaker
hey And then the last point here, circumstances don't control you.

Controlling Responses and Personal Growth

00:11:17
Speaker
You control your response. So this something I've been reminded of lately. um I think I told this story in a previous podcast, but we had an account where um we did a re-roof. You know, we didn't have the funding fully worked out for the customer. The customer told us that the title was being transferred to them, but they hadn't fully transferred over the title.
00:11:38
Speaker
ah We got an approval at the time. we were doing it through Sunrun. um I got what I thought was an approval. But then when we got the roof done, we went to let the installers know, hey, we have the roof done, schedule their install. And long story short, we found out that whatever it was, it wasn't a full approval that ah the account...
00:11:59
Speaker
couldn't be installed because they hadn't fully transferred the title to their name. And so at the in the end, we had to pay the roofers without the solar going up. We took the hit as the cells. I was me and cetera on the account, but I took the hit. I have to pay for the roof and we're making $0 from this deal. hey And the... the Positive spin is the homeowner is... I went back to them and they're going make payments towards their roof until they get title transferred transfer figured out. But it was an expensive lesson lesson to learn. right And who knows?
00:12:31
Speaker
I'm hoping I'll get paid what I what i paint on the roof. But it could be a very expensive lesson to learn. And so you need to make sure you don't let the circumstances control you. I bring that story up because...
00:12:43
Speaker
When it first happened, I was super down, and super negative, but I kind of had to like slap myself and not let that circumstance control me. It's easy for these things to happen. install Installs cancel. um I've had crews show up the day the install and then call out roofs where they should have called out the roof you know way in advance. You get cancels. You get all sorts of crazy things happening in this industry. That's why we call it the solar coaster. So one of the most important principles is to don't let the circumstances control you. You decide how you're going to react. react You decide how things are going to go
00:13:19
Speaker
And you decide what your response is going to be. So next time you have something negative happen, remember, only you can control your response. And are you going to let it drag you down? are you going to let it affect other areas of your life? Are you going to let it bleed into other days where maybe you could have gotten another cell?
00:13:36
Speaker
are you going to choose to be positive? And maybe you're down about it. Set a timer. Maybe you're down about it for 15 minutes. Snap out of it. Move on to the next thing and choose to go be positive. Choose to get the next cell instead of letting affect multiple areas areas of your life.
00:13:53
Speaker
So I hope these things help you. Just some mindset principles I've been thinking about and some things that I was reminded of. as i skim back through this book, As a Man Thinketh. So we'll link to it.
00:14:05
Speaker
um Go grab a copy of this book. Share it with your teams. It's a quick read. Even if you hate reading, you can read this probably in an hour or less. And I hope you have a great holidays whenever you're listening to this. And I hope you go change the outlook of this year and the year to come. So please shoot us a message. Let us know what guests you want to see on the show.
00:14:26
Speaker
ah Let us know what topics you want us to touch on in the year to come. And we'll see you on the next episode.
